Philip larkin would have approved. think it would be appreciative but i suspect an exhibition about philip larkin, im not sure he would have felt entirely comfortable around that. But as the exhibition shows, he was seldom entirely comfortable with anything. The sun is shining in hull as well, in fact, across much of the uk, but one exception and it is the cloud and rain in scotland, a stronger wind as well, but for the rest of the uk, good sunny spells or the cloud is increasing in wales and the south west, drizzle in the hills, the Odd Light Shower around. Edging further south. Clearing up on the far north behind that. A muggy night to come across southern parts of the uk. It felt fresher today and humidity again increasing. This sundays with a picture. The cloud and wet day tomorrow. The england and wet day tomorrow. The england and wales, the mixture of cloud and some sun, more cloud than today, a few showers breaking out especially across parts of eastern england, heavy and sundry, very warm again in south east england. 0n heavy and sundry, very warm again in south east england. On monday, sunshine and showers, cooling down, and next weeks weather is changeable. Some wet weather but also some sunshine at times. Hello, this is bbc news. The headlines theresa may meets donald trump at the g20. The us president says he expects a trade deal with the uk very, very quickly and that hell be coming to london soon. Prime minister may and i have developed a very special relationship, and i think trade will be a very big factor between our two countries, so i want to thank you very much. Firefighers tell the bbc they didnt have the necessary equipment needed to tackle the blaze at grenfell tower. The lions draw the final test match against the all blacks 15 15. It means the two sides tie the series at one game apiece. Lets take you to durham, where the labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is speaking. Those struggles in the mining communities, in the general strike, eventually lead to Public Ownership in 1947 eventually lead to Public Ownership 119117 and a eventually lead to Public Ownership in 19117 and a whole new era of investment and safety in the mining industry. And then came the political attack on the industry by Margaret Thatcher and by the economics that she represented. I told you what, never again must we go through a political attack on a community such as that against the mining community. Never again must we a cce pt mining community. Never again must we accept the economics that leads to that kind of decision will stop but when i talk about changing the political debate, i put it to you in this way, there was a Global Financial crash in 2008, nine, bought about by unregulated banks, greed, tax havens, by a sub prime Mortgage Price that was so egregiously brutal towards many of the poorest people in the United States, and there was then imported here. Imported here to a policy, a Political Choice of imposing austerity on the people of this country as was done in many other parts of europe. There was nothing ofan parts of europe. There was nothing of an economic necessity about that decision, there was no need to do it, you dont cut your way to prosperity, you invest your way to prosperity and so, in this general Election Campaign, we call time on austerities, we call time on the economics that leads to austerities and thinking around it. But let me give you a few facts about the consequences of seven years of posterity. The average Chief Executive Officer of a ftse 100 Executive Officer of a ftse100 company or indeed any other Major Company or indeed any other Major Company earns now 187 times more than the average wage of somebody working about organisation. That gap and that discrepancy has grown year on year, year on year it gets worse. No wonder they got so angry and so excited when, during the Election Campaign and before, i said we would use the power of Public Procurement to reduce the gap between the ceo and the average worker. And in Modern Britain today, one of the wealthiest countries in the world, the fifth richest country in the world, 6 million of ourfellow citizens are earning less than the living wage. Not right, not necessary. We will bring in a living wage of £10 an hour as per the tuc recommendation. And nhs workers, so quickly praised by tory quickly praised by every Tory Minister when everything goes wrong, andi minister when everything goes wrong, and i am sure they are utterly charming to them whenever they go to the gp or the hospital, have very generously taken a 14 cut in their wages in the past seven years due to the Public Sector pay cap. And when the Public Sector pay cap. And when the boat came in parliament, where we re the boat came in parliament, where were all those tories and all the crocodile tears, voting to keep the cap, voting to continue this oppression of Public Sector wages . You would have thought, in a wealthy country like Modern Britain, we could afford to ensure all our children have a decent chance in life. No there are 4 million children in Modern Britain living in poverty for whom the parents prospect of a Summer Holiday from school is a nightmare because no longer will they get access to a School Breakfast or school meal. It will be Holiday Hunger for them because the school is closed and those meals are not available. Not necessary , those meals are not available. Not necessary, not right and, in my view, fundamentally immoral in Modern Britain we have had ten yea rs of wages Modern Britain we have had ten years of wages going down because of posterity. And the symptom, not the cause, of the housing crisis, and i will come onto more of that in a moment, the symptom of those desperate people sleeping outside the main stations in every city, begging to survive or begging to get the money to go into a night shelter. Is anybody really happy at the idea that a few thousand people are forced to sleep on our streets every night because we as a society cannot get it together to provide housing for all of our citizens . And the use of food banks is up. And so many of our young peoples ambitions are denied through the underachievement in school, often because of the poverty that they have grown up in an come from. None of this is right and none of this is necessary. And i tell you what, those on middle incomes, many of those on middle incomes, many of those doing relatively well in society, are also very unhappy in living in such a deeply Unequal Society where the only thing they can do is give help to food banks in order that the hungry can get something to eat. I dont want to live in a britain of food banks, i wa nt to live in a britain of food banks, i want to live in a britain where people are properly fed because they are paid their wages to be able to afford food and so i was very proud to lead our Election Campaign this summer, and the common terry out wrote us off, the Broadsheet Newspapers wrote us off, most of the media wrote us off and said, put up a manifesto like that, nobody will ever vote for anything like that. As if people like the idea that there is poverty and injustice and inequality, underfunded schools, underfunded hospitals, low pay and work on increasing disinvestment no we went out there with a message of something very different. Under labour, austerity would end, we would invest in the future, we would respect and bring communities together, not drive them apart and so, what we are locked in the campaign was not just so, what we are locked in the campaign was notjust the excitement of youth, it was notjust campaign was notjust the excitement of youth, it was not just the concerns of older people, it was this fundamental unease that a society can go on in this direction with poverty and inequality alongside rising huge levels of individual wealth for a very small number of people. So what we were doing was saying there would be Real Security for older people through a National Care service where all those with Special Needs and disabilities would get the care they would need, not be penalised because they have dementia. We also offered hope to younger people that they will not be poorer than their pa rents were will not be poorer than their parents were and their children will not be poorer than them. They are fed up of the story of the cascading of poverty from one generation to another while the world becomes infinitely richer and the grotesque levels of wealth of the super rich gets greater and greater. Nobody is happy with that if they really think about it, and so we got that support because we were offering something very, very different. I want to thank everybody that worked so hard in ourcampaign will stop thank everybody that worked so hard in our campaign will stop those that knocked on doors to identify birds, those that mobilised people to register to vote and almost 2 million registered to vote before the election date was called, those that campaigned in public rallies in meetings and events, and those that campaigned on social media so that the conversation changed, the conversation changed into one about what you could do in a society, not what you could do in a society, not what you could not all were not able to do or what not allowed to do. We raised the question of real solidarity and what it means. But do you know something . The tories went into this election thinking it would bea into this election thinking it would be a Walk In The Park and it became a walk in the dark and a nightmare for them by the end of it. But do you know what . I am not sure they have learned many lessons from it, i am really not sure about that at all. They have done a deal with the dup which has cost them £1 billion and is lent quite rightly says, the same and is lent quite rightly says, the sa m e levels and is lent quite rightly says, the same levels of investment around the rest of the country would mean £50 billion being invested in all of the english regions, money going into scotla nd english regions, money going into scotland and wales, but no, they have got £1 billion to buy ten votes in parliament, £1 billion for those ten votes to stay in office, and they cannot find a penny for the health workers, Education Workers or any other group health workers, Education Workers or any othergroup in health workers, Education Workers or any other group in the Public Sector. And you know what . The co nte m pt sector. And you know what . The contempt the people standing up against injustice knows no bounds. The debate in parliament the other day on the women, women who have been so brutally treated by the state Pension System and Suffering Asa state Pension System and suffering as a result of it. And there was this debate in which many labour collea g u es this debate in which many Labour Colleagues put forward very strong and very good arguments about why there is a special deal needed for there is a special deal needed for the women. And you know what the Tory Minister replied . It is quite important that these women understand the need to go back into thejobs understand the need to go back into the jobs market, we understand the need to go back into thejobs market, we can offer them apprenticeships. What kind of insult to humanity is that . What kind of Co Nte M Pt To Humanity is that . What kind of contempt is that for women who have worked very hard all their lives, paid into the system that they might get. Paid into the system that they might get. That paid into the system that they might get. That is Jeremy Corbyn speaking in durham. Lets take you straight back to hamburg now where were expecting a News Conference with the leaders of the g20. The overview of the results of the summit, i told you before the summit that the preconditions for the success that the preconditions for the success of such a meeting at a little bit complicated and success is not assured. My task as chancellor and hostess of this summit is to show german interests but also european interests but to see to it that we find compromises as well. But obviously, we also made clear that, where ever there are differences in opinion, we should gloss over those differences, and this is the spirit by which we were guided in our work. The statement reflects that. Yesterday we issued a first action plan, a statement on terrorism and the meetings we had yesterday were dealing with the agenda. We adopted something here today which, in many ways, is the basis for what we have been doing here. We have adopted the motto, shaping and interconnected world. We point out the fact that the g20 revealed its strength at the beginning and that we were able to stabilise the world in one of the greatest crises of the world and what was true then continues to hold, we can achieve more together than by acting alone. And this indeed was the spirit which guided us indeed was the spirit which guided us in working through our agenda. We we re us in working through our agenda. We were able to achieve results. The first big complex of issues we worked on was trying to ensure that each and every one participates in the benefits from globalisation, growth, trade and investment, a sustainable value, tapping the potential of globalisation and also boosting employment was of the essence and it was clear there would be discussions with trade and im satisfied we were able to say that markets need to be kept open. This is all about Fighting Protectionism and also an unfair trade practices. We said we are ready to support the oecd, the we said we are ready to support the 0ecd, the World Trade Organisation and allowed them to supervise what we are actually doing, and that we also see the benefits of International Trade and global trade have not reached each and every one, so have not reached each and every one, so what we call inclusive growth needs to obviously trickle down to what is happening in the Member States. We said a rules based trade system which plays a crucial role in making this possible, reflected by the activity of the wto, and complementary to that ballot or Trade Agreements can be concluded but they have to be in line with wto rules and therefore we wish every Success Rules and therefore we wish every success to the upcoming ministerial conference. There was one specific issue, naming the capacity and the steel sector. We agreed on setting up steel sector. We agreed on setting upa steel sector. We agreed on setting up a global forum steel sector. We agreed on setting up a globalforum which steel sector. We agreed on setting up a global forum which would be supervised and supported by the 0ecd. It supervised and supported by the oecd. It worked rather slowly so it was important that join oecd. It worked rather slowly so it was important thatjoin this meeting we we re was important thatjoin this meeting we were able to say until august 2017 we need to have the necessary information on the table so that in november a substantial report can be tabled which would offer Effective Solutions to this issue of steel capacity and i hope this format will then be used also in order to address those contentious issues on the table. In the second session, we addressed the issue of securing stability and resilience. That means we need a resilient financial system. Finance ministers did exemplary work in preparing this and also throughout this conference, the hamburg action plan reflects that and it is very important that we work systematically. The Global Financial situation has been improved. Mark carney pointed out that we absolutely need to be vigilant as regard to establishing a level playing field. For the International Financial market structure. That is something we need. We also mention the Profit Shifting issue that this initiative needs to be implemented and is of central importance in establishing fairness in taxation. We also pointed out how important it was to combat pandemics which may well cast a shadow over the whole stability of the global economy. We talk together with the head of the wto. We heard from the first time in the period leading up to this Summit Meeting a meeting of health and was the first time they had addressed us with the head of the world bank. We are better equipped to show a common front and a determined front should further pandemics occur. Another very important area in health is fighting against resistances. The Third Session and also the third pa rt Third Session and also the third part of the communique deals with sustained livelihoods. We talked about participation of women, empowerment of women. That is something where we build on the meeting of brisbane because in brisbane we said we want to close this employment gap, this participation gap, reducing it by 2596 participation gap, reducing it by 25 by 2025, two further initiatives added to that, the east Schools Initiative that we considered to be a prime importance because this really is all about the central factor of education and skills and regarding digitalisation, our african colleagues highlighted the importance of education is key to promoting Sustainable Growth in africa. We also add some length discussed the German Initiative that was supported by colleagues, with africa. The g20 shouldering the responsibility regarding africa. The central element of that is compact with every individual african country. We do not only engage furthermore in Traditional Development and cooperation but we also set up partnerships. This is a very Important Initiative because the African Union represented around the African Union represented around the table of g20 countries, with its agenda, we outlined for the first time what the envisaged for the future of africa and for the future development, and we also looked at Fighting Corruption and migration and flight. We discussed this at some length, and particularly on corruption, a number of very important papers have been adopted. One crucial issue was climate and energy. And what came out of this meeting was what i had already said that the beginning of this meeting, where ever there is no consensus, this agreement has to be made. U nfortu nately, this agreement has to be made. Unfortunately, and i deplore this, the United States of america and now is the intention of leaving the climate agreement. It becomes clear that dissenting view of the United States but i am very gratified to note that the other 19 Member States of the g20 say that the Paris Agreement is irreversible, they feel committed to what we agreed on, and it is to be implemented as quickly as possible and we also agreed on a so called hamburg Action Plan On Climate and energy. Ladies and gentlemen, this brings me to the point that, obviously, this declaration is one document, but in all of those papers we have adopted, we have committed ourselves to a number of obligations. Argentina will be the host country next year in 2019japan will be the host country next year in 2019 japan will take will be the host country next year in 2019japan will take over, and in 2020, saudi arabia. On the margins of such a Summit Meeting, there are a lwa ys of such a Summit Meeting, there are always opportunities for meeting with leaders and bilateral meetings. This is a very useful tool, not only we re this is a very useful tool, not only were the lengthy discussions between the american and russian president s, but Emmanuel Macron and i were able to talk to Vladimir Putin on the future of the normandy format, and we we re future of the normandy format, and we were also able to work on a number of other issues and achieve results. The results i outlined to you and all of the success we achieved in these two days was only possible because a lot of policemen and women, security forces, ensured oui and women, security forces, ensured our safety and security during the summit. They had a very difficult task. They also saw to it that those who wanted to peacefully demonstrate could do so. They have tried their utmost to do that. On behalf of all the members of the g20, i would like to thank my colleagues. My collea g u es to thank my colleagues. My colleagues said i should pass the gratitude onto the security forces, and each and everyone who has seen to it this summer could take place, the violence unleashed, the unscrupulous brutality with which the Police Forces were attacked, i condemn wholeheartedly. There is no justification whatsoever for pillage, arson, brutalattacks against the life and limb of policeman, and i can only say that those who act in this way are not at all interested in uttering political criticism or standing up for people on this planet. Acts like this can no longer be called a democrat. I talked to the cheaper Police Forces, responsible for ensuring our security. Later on i will talk to the first mayor of hamburg and will ask him to pass on our thanks to his police force because, as you know, this mission is still ongoing and they have done a tremendous job and iam they have done a tremendous job and i am truly grateful. I talked to the finance minister. We will see to it how together we can try and alleviate the pain of those and also look at how, not if, we can offer them compensation for the personal damage they incurred and we were. Talks with the city of hamburg on this. That by way of an introductory statement and i am open to taking questions. You talked about violence. My question is, to what extent have the guests, the president s and heads, noticed the violence . President s and heads, noticed the violence . And president s and heads, noticed the violence . And what about the violent and peaceful protests . Have they had any influence on the ability to come up any influence on the ability to come up witha any influence on the ability to come up with a general Shed Communique . Is there a connection . up with a general Shed Communique . Is there a connection . I believe the many activities of a Civil Society andi many activities of a Civil Society and i would label the Peaceful Demonstrations on the margins of this summit also a part of Civil Society engagement have contributed to knowing that when we meet here, many people out there expect us to come up with results. At the beginning of this meeting, i also said in public. On the other hand, the guests obviously also saw that. Some of them have had first hand experience of that because they were not able to leave or get to the hotels and they have watched television so you may rest assured they were familiar with what was going on
