Who were kidnapped last friday have been handed over to Government Security forces. The Katsina State governor said they were all alive and in good condition. The uk has warned that progress seems blocked and time is running out to strike a post brexit trade deal with the eu. The president of the european commission, ursula von der leyen, says big differences remain and that resolving them would be very challenging. The court for arbitration in sport has upheld the doping ban on russia competing at global events, including the olympics and footballs world cup. But the punishment has been reduced from four to two years. A court in france has jailed a moroccan man for life after finding him guilty of a terror attack on a paris bound train in 2015. Ayoub el khazzani was overpowered by passengers after opening fire. Hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are former fleet street editor eve pollard and the uk trade and economics correspondent at politico, anna isaac. Tomorrows front pages, starting with. The sun leads with news that beatles legend sir Paul Mccartney has said he will have the vaccine for coronavirus as soon as he is allowed. That comes on the day two thirds of england ended up in the toughest tier 3 restrictions. Tiers before bedlam is the mirrors headline. It says, 38 million under toughest rules until Christmas Free for all four days later. The daily mail calls it the bleakest midwinter and writes that britain faces a Third National lockdown after christmas. The guardian leads with something a little different. They reveal that growing numbers of hospitals are running short of beds. Sticking with health, just scraps for carers leads the metro. They report that 39 of nurses say they have missed meals because theyre so poorly paid. The telegraph focuses on brexit and the hope of a weekend agreement at last. They say that Boris Johnson is urging the head of the european commission, urusla von der leyen, to clear the two remaining hurdles on fishing and state aid. And the daily express leads, too, with brexit. A photo there of borisjohnson and the french president , emmanuel macron, and the paper says there will be no deal unless macron backs down. So, lets begin. We will start with the daily mail. The time has been miserable already and the daily mail focusing the time has been miserable already and the daily mailfocusing on the time has been miserable already and the daily mail focusing on the blea kest and the daily mail focusing on the bleakest midwinter amid this fear of a Third National lockdown. Absolutely. And of course these fears are being triggered by the fa ct fears are being triggered by the fact that the tiers system is moving u pwa rd fact that the tiers system is moving upward when its moving down. A lot more areas of the country moving up to tier 3 and very few moving down to tier 3 and very few moving down to tier 3 and very few moving down to tier 2 or tier 1. Only one moving down, herefordshire. But also left 01 down, herefordshire. But also left or mentee of some of the language being used. People being told to behaveif being used. People being told to behave if they live in kent with the prevalence is so high. Whales reported 11,000 cases and its data. There is this sense of trying to communicate and its spiralling and inevitably needing a january and february and even march very long months and its hard to see if the situation is becoming more acute with some of the 44 aimless is being turned away or forced to wait to get the hospitals, the highest in four yea rs. The hospitals, the highest in four years. Hard to see and i think with the daily mail is sitting at here is the daily mail is sitting at here is the situation is going to look any better in a couple of weeks type. Focusing also on the tiers system, the toughest of tiers really hitting ha rd the toughest of tiers really hitting hard the Hospitality Industry because shops are still open in tier 3 but it is the restaurants in the pubs that have to close. And of course they are worried that some nonessential shops may have to close because obviously thats also how the virus is being spread. Its terrible for. We all know restaurants and coffee places near us restaurants and coffee places near us where they are closed or they are very quiet and they may never reopen. Had to give a business like that going . Is the scariest thing because the lender that we knew may not be the london that we ever get back to at the end of this virus. But the headlines are the bleak midwinter, a good one coming up in the daily mirror and of course i think everyone ive talked to re ce ntly think everyone ive talked to recently has thought that we are being allowed these five days of christmas, which i think the doctors are sad that we are being allowed but i think the politicians of all people have nothing to grandparents ortheir people have nothing to grandparents or their parents perhaps since last christmas and certainly not since february, so for Mental Health reasons get together but they are iiow reasons get together but they are now worried that especially long they wishing to be very badly hit people are going to go and visit relatives outside london and take the virus with them. And you can see the virus with them. And you can see the people think we will have these five days and i think we have all got to forget about celebrating new yearin got to forget about celebrating new year in the way that we ever did. And we may be in lockdown as you say through and we may be in lockdown as you say throuthanuary and we may be in lockdown as you say through january and february because covid likes to cold weather and thats whats coming up. Lets have a look at that deli mirror had loaned that headline. Tiers before bedlam in the picture there of a shopper with a facemask and one of those big visor screens and of course a santa hat but thats the way you do if you go out shopping. But the serious story here is we have these tiers coming in and then as eve was saying we have this period coming up of eased restrictions over the christmas period. Absolutely. And i think thats what a lot of the front page writers are struggling with today. You have this extraordinary contradiction where people are being placed into these very severe restrictions, having an enormous impact on the economy and on the sense of well being but also being told dont worry in a couple of days, four days later, you can start your Christmas Free for all as they term it. And it comes if you have la ra term it. And it comes if you have lara they were taking quite a strong position here with the Shadow Health secretary saying think again. This does not make sense. The science is not supporting it. Should we be doing this and should be think ain . Doing this and should be think again . And it becomes harder and harderfor again . And it becomes harder and harder for the government to defend it. The pressure is huge because we will have paid for their Christmas Plans and people looking for their Christmas Plans but they are also 110w Christmas Plans but they are also now approaching them with a sense of dread because they are not. No one is ignoring the numbers in terms of cases either. So it is this mixed state and you wonder if in the long term, if it a few weeks at labour think ahead to seeing having done the better thing, to have been too scared of saying we need to cancel christmas. The thinking is it is political suicide to cancel christmas but if the paper says him a labours Jonathan Christmas but if the paper says him a laboursJonathan Ashworth baggett met hank think again about this festive break. Lets look at the times with the hot spots in danger ofa times with the hot spots in danger of a lockdown. Particular areas with the numbers have really been climbing very high. Potentially with the different strain of this disease. But talk us through the hotspots that the times is pointing out. Kant in particular seems to be with the strain, this new variant of the disease, seems to be most obvious there. Obviously in testing they have found it. But you have got all. I rememberaudrey hepburn in my fair lady, all those posh places, but now they are in tier 3, not all of them but they are certainly going towards it. 38 thousand 38 383 more cases which is gone up accidentally since last week and nobody totally understands why. I dont have people are travelling yet, though i do think University Students have gone home and i do think shopping has been allowed. And i have not been shopping but lots of people have. And you are inside and you are far away from the window. What im me is my children said when we have christmas, the windows open so we have christmas, the windows open so bring a rug because you might be cold. Everybody is trying not to make sure that none of their families are affected by this and Jonathan Ashworth may very well be in the right place because people will feel so guilty if they meet up and then one of their family members succumbs to covid 19. And they will blend themselves because a lot of people are a cinematic full so they feel they are finding it in the car Christmas Morning or Christmas Eve and they think its great and they think they feel well and yet somebody at the end of that Holiday Season is going to maybe be in hospital. That is what terrifies every body, especially everybody was young. Busy looking at their parents and saying is it worth it for a couple of days being together for one of you to catch covid . And thats a very hard, narrow line to ta ke thats a very hard, narrow line to take but its frightening people. And i dare not pronounce a because i would never pronounce as well as in the film, but bedfordshire, buckinghamshire, all these places that are now going into tier 3. And youve got places like herefordshire which has dropped down into tier1 and they are next to wales which is ina and they are next to wales which is in a complete lockdown and as we know and touching upon this earlier that the virus does adhere to boundaries and county lines and all the rest of it. So was a difficult one for all of us to navigate. It is really difficult. People are going on the streets on the issues and they say rather than going brilliant, they are saying are you sure its a good idea . It seems a bit risky. So i think people are looking over the fence as it were to see whats going on in their neighbourhood. In other places nearby have really high prevalence and they sort of feel like they are next. So even this move down a step, it is very important for business, it is very important for business, it does not necessarily operable the sort of copper and the confidence that they to necessarily, if they are in an area less badly affected, to go out and use as witnesses as a light normally. So theres a real problem having no choice but to have a pass for a tent at trying to do this rather than a national lockdown, even if that seems to be coming eventually. But it is hard to see how it gazebo both the confidence they need but also follows the science efficiently with some of these boundaries can be quite arbitrary and we know people will travel for christmas. We are being told to keep it small, keep it local, keep it safe but the answer is people polish over christmas and the colour of the great getaway and he saw what happened in terms of thanksgiving in the us. Very similar travel affect on the scale here and we know those boundaries will not be respected so he referred not be in that lower boundary for now but it is very much not going to stay there after christmas. Interesting to compare it to thanksgiving as well. The guardian looking at what potentially will be or will be happening at schools and secondary schools, today we found out sort of for many, sedate thursday, for many the last day of school and some still go tomorrow but its the last sort of moments of school before the Christmas Holidays and today we find out that potentially secondary schools will be staggering there reopening for non exam students in january. Its quite last minute arguably. Very last minute. Those andl arguably. Very last minute. Those and i spent my life having tojuggle child care, they are having a nervous breakdown because they thought School Started on a certain day in january and they can go back to work and then they will be organised and the whole thing has been turned into disarray. Partly because schools want to do testing particularly i think on secondary school children. And its partly because schools i think are very worried already. Looking forward worried already. Looking forward worried about exams. I have a grandson who is taking his a levels this year and he grandson who is taking his a levels this yearand he is grandson who is taking his a levels this year and he is really worried that with the january exams, they we re that with the january exams, they were supposed to be the check before you got to the proper exams in the summer but who knows it thats going to work with him at the january exams will be the ones that are counted as the a levels. So you are going to have a big drama about what time kids go back to school and what is going to happen about these exams or whether teachers are going to have to do a mass checking. They also if they dont go by the school, will they have home schooling. Let teachers get up and running before term so late in this term must be quite difficult. And all the parents we have talked to about home schooling, not enjoying it very much and finding it very difficult. But if youre childcare is a week or ten days or two weeks later than they should, you dont want to miss all those lessons was up you dont wa nt all those lessons was up you dont want to miss all that time. Its a fairly difficult situation. Want to miss all that time. Its a fairly difficult situationlj want to miss all that time. Its a fairly difficult situation. I can handle hart say that im one of those parents having a nightmare and home schooling was a disaster. Im not proud of admitting that but it was dreadful. So big up to teachers. Lets leave coronavirus for the time being and have a look of the daily express. They have a play on words. Trying to unpick what they meant by this, was it poland not want to be pa rt this, was it poland not want to be part of the eu but it was pointed out to me that its the flagpoles in the background. But after the phone call earlier on today, inching towards but still quite big hurdles towards but still quite big hurdles to get across. Its becoming increasingly a bit of a headache trying to say looks like some progress but differences remain. Variations on those phrases have been going around for weeks and weeks. And i think the answer is what you will find is you get reports of progress and then if you need to get reports on progress, you get very strong statements coming out of these phone call say theyre still lots of work to be done. Lets be very clear, we are very far from a deal here. Then it becomes very difficult to out what is real tangible progress, what gives us closer to a deal and what is posturing, what is trying to use that very last bit of your capital in negotiation and make you like you might walk away because you might get a bit more what you want. Its very difficult for us on the outside to try to piece it together even estrin lists the guesstimates of whats going on if you are not right in the room where its happening. But i think what is clear is even if it does not quite work out, and michael go said there is a 50 chance of no deal today, even if it does not work out, they are getting closer to getting over the line so in this weird water which we live in with braxton, there are binary outcomes here but we are getting closer to both being a realistic option for us a few weeks ago we we re option for us a few weeks ago we were hearing actually maybe even a lower chance of getting a deal to the line. So both things can be true frustrating lay. We have these differences on state aid in fishing but we can still be at the same time. Has this been an elegant process . Time. Has this been an elegant process . No. As i said before its beena very process . No. As i said before its been a very bad divorce. Where nobody wants to be honest with the lawyers let alone each other. There are numerous problems. For some to stay a problem is a problem because they are saying if the government gives money to a steel factory or car factory, that can be attacked because its state aid. Whereas if brussels gives money to a country to help it in some area, factory or business or whatever, that is ok. I dont see how we are going to get over that. Unless we have some sort of arbitration to decide what is actually coming from the government and what is coming from. You cannot say because accounts are brussels that it comes from the government because all the money is taken from the countries. I would like to and im hoping. I hope that they actually succeed in getting a deal because i think it will help us enormously to have one, but it still seems like they are far apart but on the other hand just the 3ist apart but on the other hand just the 315t is written in stone but grown ups could say we will keep discussing through january which will drive everybody mad. But maybe boris says i cannot spend the time on this because there is so much else to worry about and we have got to come to a decision and maybe thats the one thing that will make them decide. Hard to get to listen people to decide on anything sol think you hear a different story some weeks and uncle a marker want to sort things out because the car industry in germany absolutely needs the uk and micron does not and the fishing thing seems extraordinary because fishing is very important and very important to certain areas of this country and to france and other countries. But its hardly a great big Huge Industry but it seems to bea great big Huge Industry but it seems to be a thing that they cannot get sorted. The symbolic industry as well so everybody feels so strongly about it. If they get it through this weekend, then it potentially the parliaments can work it through before the 31st so we will watch and wait. That is your weekend sorted out. A look at the Daily Telegraph and talk us through the cartoon. Matt has done a few is always a good job of summing up a bit of the national mood. This is a very sad cartoon of an older gentleman with her sister in the background saying best hugged after january her sister in the background saying best hugged afterjanuary six 2021. The time he probably half the vaccine then you can give him a hug. But i think these pictures i speak a lot of words and they are saying its hard to hold out for that hug in six months time and i think thats what we are feeling at the moment. That is so true but an important reminder that with christmas coming up people who are lucky enough to see grandparents older and more vulnerable relatives, still had to be careful. Incredibly careful. I think you need almost to send e mails and talk to one another and decide. Weve already got our city plimmer we older people are going to sit at one into the room, one to the table and not go down to the other end of the table where there are teenagers who of course are still living a life and going to school and seeing friends and as they should be. So as ijoked i think the base of the windows will all be open so bring a sweatshirt and maybe even a rug. Good advice as a lwa ys and maybe even a rug. Good advice as always and good luck to your grandson for his a levels im assuming he will be down the other to the table for christmas dinner. Thank you so much for talking us through tomorrow morning positive papers tonight and is always loving to have you both and thank you for your time to have you both and thank you for yourtime and to have you both and thank you for your time and thank you to our viewers as well who joined us as always. The hashtag is bbc papers on social media. Bye bye for now. Good evening. Two goals from Marcus Rashford helped Manchester United to their tenth straight away win in the premier league as they beat bottom side Sheffield United 3 2. It was a dream start, though, for the home side, who capitalised on a mistake by returning goalkeeper dean henderson to take the lead through david mcgoldrick. But ole Gunnar Solskjaers side were ahead before the break thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and anthony martial. And rashford grabbed his second of the night to seal the three points. The home side pulled one back, but it was too late. And the defeat means theyve now made the worst ever start to a top flight english season. In the early kick off, it somehow finished goalless in the match between aston villa and burnley. Thats despite villa carving out 23 chances, but theyjust couldnt find a way past nick pope in the burnley goal. The point, though, lifts burnley out of the relegation zone. Marcus rashford has been rewarded for the inspirational work at the best fifa football awards. The england and Manchester United striker has won a Fifa Foundation award for his work trying to End Child Poverty in the uk. Elsewhere, liverpool boss jurgen klopp has been named the best mens coach for the second year in a row after leading liverpool to their First League Title in 30 years. And Manchester City defender lucy bronze has become the first english player to win the best womens player award. Sam allardyce has spoken to the media for the First Time Since becoming west broms new manager. The former england boss has signed an 18 month deal after slaven bilic was sacked yesterday. And despite being out of the game for over two years, allardyce says hes ready for the challenge ahead. I have never been so refreshed, ive never been so ready and eager to come back. And sometimes thisjob can weal you down. I actually realised how many years i was a manager, trying to get to the top. You realise that when you get a break, but this break went on so long and i had so much pent up energy, i needed to expend it as quick as i could. And this is where i can expend all the energy ive got reserved, ready for this battle. Premier league clubs have voted against allowing teams to make five substitutions per match at a meeting today, but they have agreed on introducing two additional concussion replacements. The premier league hopes to start the plans from january, after the approval of trials was given the green light for the new year. The new rule means that permanent substitutions can be made if a player suffers a head injury, even if all of the replacements have already been used. To avoid potential abuse of the rule, opposition teams in other news, more former Rugby Union Players have joined the Legal Process against the games authorities for alleged negligence. It means there are now nine players preparing to face the rugby football union, Wales Rugby Union and world rugby. A letter highlighting their claims, including their intention to sue, was delivered today. The former wales under 20 center adam hughes, who is now aged 30 and seen on the ball here, is the youngest to claim that hes suffered permanent brain damage through playing the sport. The law firm representing the group say more than 100 players have come forward. The ban on russia competing at major sporting events after a doping scandal has been upheld. But its been cut from four to two years by the court of arbitration for sport. It means russia wont have a formal presence at the delayed Tokyo Olympics next summer or the football world cup in 2022. The country was initially given a four year ban by the world anti doping agency, following an investigation in 2016 which found at least 1000 russian athletes across at least 30 sports were implicated in state sponsored doping programmes. Our sports news correspondent Alex Capstick has more. During the case, as i understand it, the four day hearing which took place in september, russia did not really defend the fact that they were guilty of covering up this data or providing fake evidence in these documents which they handed to wada earlier this year, but they did argue that the sanction was unfair, it was unfair on clean athletes who were innocent victims on all of this, athletes who wanted to represent their country at an olympics games. And the panel felt it was not proportionate, the four year ban was just too harsh, although they said in a statement that it in no way validated the conduct of the russian authorities. They are reducing it to two years, which, for a lot of people, wont be enough. A lot of people wanted it to be a four year. Wada said they were disappointed by this. And in the nitty gritty, the detail of the judgement, if you look at it, russia, russian athletes can compete, they are allowed to compete. They will be allowed to have the name russia on their uniforms, although the flag and the anthem will be banned, so it will be a bit like the pyeongchang games. There was a team called the. They were neutral. We can expect a good number of russian athletes in tokyo next year. And Wayne Rooneys son is following in his dads footsteps by signing for Manchester United. Kai, whos now 11, was pictured alongside his dad and mum coleen signing a contract with the club. Uniteds record goal scorer wrote on twitter. No pressure, then that is all of the sport. Bye for now. Hello. Our spell of unsettled and mild mid december weather is set to continue for another few days yet, before things get a little bit cooler into next week, but certainly for friday, its going to be a windy day, very mild once again with some heavy rain around. Now, the heaviest of the rain will be affecting south wales, where the met office have issued an amber rain warning. That rain could be bringing some travel disruption and some flooding, up to 100 mm following over the Higher Ground of south wales. Now, through the course of the early hours of friday, that rain is moving its way in from the west. Throughout friday, its going to be heavy for the south west of england, wales, moving into northern england, into scotland as well. This is 3pm in the afternoon. Not only will there be a lot of heavy rain, it will be drier in the southeast. But the gusts of wind will reach around 60 mph three exposed parts of the irish sea, 30 or a0 mph gusts of wind elsewhere. Northern ireland will see that rain clearing to leave sunshine and some scattered showers, but a wet and to the day for much of scotland, northern england, wales and the south west. Very mild once again, 13 14 degrees. We could see 15 celsius and one or two spots. That rain will continue its progression, across east anglia and the south east, during friday evening and overnight into saturday. So, again, its an unsettled picture as we head through to the first part of the weekend. Plenty of showers on the map first thing saturday, frost free certainly once again with overnight temperatures between about 7 11 degrees to start off your weekend. So the weekend will be dominated by an area of low pressure sitting out towards the north west. Were going to be seen showers rotating around that area of low pressure, driven in on quite a brisk south westerly wind, so still quite a mild direction, but a little bit cooler than its been over recent days. Lots of scattered showers, most of them in the west, and along some of these exposed southern coasts. Sunny spells, nowhere immune to catching one or two showers, but generally driest in the east. Temperatures still around about 10 12 degrees, a touch down on recent days. Heading on into the second half of the weekend, and its a fairly similar story, with a mix of sunny spells and a few scattered showers, again mainly in the north and west, but some coming in along the English Channel as well. Not quite as warm by this stage, temperatures around about 8 11 degrees on sunday. Stays unsettled and a touch cooler as we head into the middle part of next week. Bye for now
