Complete democratic ticket there. She was the attorney general as well. There she is on stage. You see the bidens there as well. A strange election this year given that we are ina election this year given that we are in a pandemic. Normally with these events, you would see a huge crowd and that would change the tone of the way that the speech was held. Do you have them in the large stadium in wilmington, delaware, joe bidens home state. There they are as they talk about the sign of the times. You can seejoe biden and joe biden there, putting their masks on. Asi as i say, this is the start of what will be a very different president ial election campaign. There they are leaving the stage there, the First Campaign appearance
for the democratic ticket, Kamala Harris, who is the daughter of jamaican and indian parents. So the first south asian and the first female black american on the democratic ticket. So there you go, a big moment in american politics there. Now we can go to amy. Aimee allison, founder of she the people, an organization aimed at elevating the political voice and leadership of women of color. Thank you very much forjoining us. Asi thank you very much forjoining us. As i was saying just then, it is a very unusual campaign. This is a seminal moment, the complete democratic ticket. What did you think . First of all, its very clear that Kamala Harris is ready. She is ready to lead. And her speech really
made it very clear that her role in this is to speak to the pain that americans are feeling right now. The health crisis, the economic calamity that we are facing, the Racial Justice cries in the street. She called attention to what she called the coalition of conscience. And the black lives matter led protests that we re black lives matter led protests that were in every single state and city in the country, i think she really fully embraced justice politics and it really had a nod to her parents meeting in the Civil Rights Movement and the civil right movement that is alive and well today. And it dovetailed really perfectly with joe bidens introduction of her, that vivid description of the White Supremacists with the torches that came in and marched on charlottesville, virginia, which was the capital of the confederacy. And
he painted that picture. He said feel what that was and now look at the commitment to racialjustice and to building their country. Not to say i got emotional watching her on the stage and realising that the history making moment that was but also the enormity of the task and that there is a woman of colour at the helm of the party who is helping to unify a multiracial voting coalition, speaking the language that we need to hear, calling out donald trump and his lies and misdeeds and incompetence and racism and bringing people together. We have a lot of work to do in the 80 days to come, but that was quite an introduction to the ticket. You say 80 days, it is going to turn around quite quickly. How effective do you think she will be to the ticket . Still very difficult to call the
selection. Can she change the game . Absolutely. She the people, the organisation i founded a few years ago, has been in contact with our Battle Ground states that donald trump one last time that democrats have on their most when list, including arizona, texas, georgia, florida, michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin. Women of colour or a quarter of those voters are more and the most absolutely loyal democrats and the core of the base of an inclusive base of voters and what we have heard in listening sessions over this past month with key women of colour leaders in those states is a woman of colour would be the missing link in terms of deepening enthusiasm for the joe missing link in terms of deepening enthusiasm for thejoe biden candidacy. So a biden harris
candidacy. So a biden harris candidacy with a woman of colour at the top Withjoe Biden will help to engage and increase voter turnout for the most viable Democratic Party voters which are black and brown women, who will vote at high percentages but we need is through. Even though we face the ravages of the pandemic and the economic problems that we all face as well as Voter Suppression in the states, we a re as well as Voter Suppression in the states, we are mostly to show up and bring ourfriends states, we are mostly to show up and bring our friends and family. It is high voter turnout we name and Kamala Harris and the ticket changes that game it makes that possible. Kamala harris and the ticket changes that game it makes that possiblem course it is worth remembering that last year her and joe biden were effectively rivals, both slugging it out to become the democratic nominee. And if some of those to that we saw, they were not too kind to each other. So this is a unified front now . Most point now and i was there in miami during the debate where senator harris tells the story
of being the second class bused to desegregate berkeley, california. Now im sitting in oakland, california and she is from my hometown and this was the neighbouring town and that you tell that story into the little girl was me. And she out thatjoe biden had a history of supporting segregation and working with senators on the other side of the aisle who had supported policies of segregation. She called him out on it and he should be called out on it. Those are the thinking that is not in tune with what serves the community. And so some with what serves the community. And so some people thought they are conflict or rivals but i thought it showed excellent leadership. She was at her best when she lead nash leaned deeply into her lived in experience and expertise. Her identity if he qualifies her to speak across race in unify people and to tell the truth. And to tell the truth as joe and to tell the truth. And to tell the truth asjoe biden invited and we heard him sayjust now i want to be the last person in the room before i make the decisions and i wa nt before i make the decisions and i want you to always tell me the
truth. She demonstrated that she was not afraid to do that and that she can navigate complex racial politics by doing it. I think instead of looking at them as rivals, look at it as looking at them as rivals, look at itasa looking at them as rivals, look at it as a proving ground where she showed herself to be a formidable truth teller and carrying issues of justice and she is in the back of the ticket fulfilling really what that promise of her candidacy is. Thank you very much forjoining us andi thank you very much forjoining us and i think whatever weight your politics lean, you cannot deny that this is a moment in history. Its now time for us to take a first look at the national and International Front pages in the papers. Hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are george eaton, whos the senior online editor
of the new statesman, and the spectators economics correspondent kate andrews. Tomorrows front pages, starting with. As thousands of students in the uk await their a level exam results, the Daily Telegraph leads with a claim by the uk education secretary that inflating the grades of students in england would harm them for life as he rules out following scotland in allowing students in england to be awarded grades predicted by their teachers. The confusion over grades for students in england also makes the cover of the i, which reports that nearly half of pupils in some schools will seek to overturn their grades. Dramatic pictures of the Train Derailment in aberdeenshire that killed three people after a night of storms in scotland are on the cover of the metro. Britains economic woes make the front page of the International Edition of the financial times, after figures released today showed the country suffered a bigger economic slump than any other major european economy. Trump and biden ready for the final confrontation, says french paper le figaro, after the democratic candidate announced Kamala Harris as his running mate. And in an opinion piece on the cover of the International New york times, that confrontation is described as a campaign of contrasts with harris representing the future. So, lets begin. Very good have you both with us. A very busy evening already. Kick off with some of the international papers. We have got le figaro here and the headline there of donald trump andjoe and the headline there of donald trump and joe biden ready for final confrontation. And also a german paper which says team against trump with joe paper which says team against trump Withjoe Biden paper which says team against trump with joe biden and paper which says team against trump Withjoe Biden and Kamala Harris picture talking online. Im sure you all soft Kamala Harris picking there. What did you make of that . About you came across very well. Public speaking is certainly one of her major attributes. In many ways they are a team that makes sense. We already see that Kamala Harris is bringing together different batches of the Democratic Party and some of the moderates and more of the radical left. They might think she is not quite as regressive as we will like and the moderate left say she may be a bit more progressive than but she will do. Taking those prejudicial candidates is not interested in appealing more to independence and even Republican Voters who are just sick and tired of donald trump. This is definitely a selection thatjoe biden wants to woo a selection thatjoe biden wants to woo voters like that and potentially this week was going to reach out to them but he has gone for one more about uniting the Democratic Party in many ways that makes sense. But it isa in many ways that makes sense. But it is a tactic. The democrats tried to put off announcing the vp pick as long as possible because they knew that she would be heavily scrutinised. In many ways we know everything there is to know about joe biden is hes been in politics
for decades and was Vice President of the us and his record is very much that people know what they stand. Whereas the bpp it was also to be scrutinised more with somebody less well known. Choosing to see how that will go down for Kamala Harris because actually a lot of criticisms about her will come from the progressives on the left who dont like the record on criminaljustice reform when she was attorney general and california. She was hard when it came to Prison Reform and such and she did not support liberalizing drug laws and she was very hard on crime. There have been some accusations there. Well see how that unfold the coming weeks but overall the democrats will be happy with her performance tonight. And of course, george, last year Kamala Harris and joe biden were rivals to become the democratic nominee and now they are on the ticket together. The obvious assets that she brings to the campaign have already been talked about. But how important is
who a Vice President pic is . How much does that change the nature of the ticket . I think it is certainly one of the factors that can play a key role. The two biggest factors in us elections tend to obviously be the lead candidates on the ticket and then the state of the economy and then the state of the economy and essentially whether americans feel their lives are Getting Better or worse but vp pick scan it certainly amplify a campaigns strengths or create new weaknesses or add to existing ones. And i think Kamala Harris is seen as having energised the campaign and one of the criticisms of him has been that he has been to absent from the stage and that his campaign has been low energy. He is obviously a face. She certainly rejuvenated the campaign ata time certainly rejuvenated the campaign at a time of some of donald trump off my supporters were hoping that
he was returning to a more stable position. But i think it is worth saying from the start that im surprised that le figaro talks with the final confrontation with a negatively really now that the race is truly beginning. And we are several months from november and a huge amount can change in that time. Although biden is the clear favourite at the moment is i think he would be reckless for anyone that there is no way back for donald trump and it is noticeable when you look at the current odds that forecasters are using, they give donald trump about 830 chance of winning, which is almost identical to the chance he was given in 2016. A 30 to the chance he was given in 2016. A 30 chance. Hes in a much weaker position than joe a 30 chance. Hes in a much weaker position thanjoe biden i think that is because it is very ha rd think that is because it is very hard to think of a reason why someone hard to think of a reason why someone who did not for donald trump in 2016 would vote for him this time around given his recent record and given what a polarising and often
repellent president he is been. Given what a polarising and often repellent president he is beenlj will repellent president he is been. will bring you back in, kay and i covered 26 initial talk to some who voted for donald trump. Many of them still want to stand by him. Do you think this completed democratic ticket can do enough to swing some of those suburban voters who were often key when it comes to deciding the eventual result . Possibly but i think a lot of the surrounding voters and especially women that you talk about were never so firmly in his camp to begin with and they may have loaned him votes and 26 and hoping he would mature as a president and he would take different tactics when in office and they may well be disappointed in looking for somebody new to vote for. So i think there is a lot of opportunity there to sway and if george says opportunity there to sway and if george sastoe biden is quickly ahead in the polls and they are different than 2016. If we go back four years ago, Hillary Clinton and donald trump really fluctuating my both in the polls and it also pinned
it he was in the headlines that day. Their popularity would tend to sync. They were two very unpopular candidates and donald trump while he was behind in the polls certainly almost consistently throughout were moments where they were close. Look at the polling between trump and joe biden come up biden has been ahead quite significant lee. I have are looking at some of the skeet swing states nest with the decisions are made. Donald trump is in picking up a bit when it is fair to say you do not write him off. You have months ago ina not write him off. You have months ago in a course to prisoners of the base which donald trump and joe biden both to do. Actually thought that donald trump could pick up some export there because joe that donald trump could pick up some export there becausejoe biden has shown that he is not exactly the statesman that he was when he was Vice President to barack 0bama. Almost a decade older and just has not been as fast and is click on the campaign trailas many not been as fast and is click on the campaign trail as many would like to have seen. So i think that donald
trump may well have some cars up
