Its funny. I feel for a saturday afternoon, being in contention, pga tour, i feel sort of weird out there. That is the sport for now. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are sienna rodgers, editor of the political news website labourlist, and david wooding, Political Editor of the sun on sunday. Welcome to you both. A very good morn to you. Pictures from the protests in Central London lead a number of the papers. The sunday mirror leads with clashes between police and far right demonstrators with Officers Holding back protestors in whitehall. The sunday telegraph reports that ministers are discussing proposals to make it easier to prosecute people who damage War Memorials with prison sentences of up to 10 years. The Prime Minister is set to scrap the 2 metre social distancing rule according to the mail on sunday who say the intervention comes after leading restauranteurs warned keeping it would cost millions ofjobs. A warning from the childrens commissioner for england is on the front of the observer. Anne longfield accuses borisjohnson of putting childrens basic right to education at risk over what he paper calls the chaotic return to schools. The sunday express leads with the chancellor encouraging people to return to the high street when non essential shops reopen on monday. And, the sunday times reports that the Prime Minister is abandoning plans inherited from theresa mays government to make gender change easier, meaning people wont be able to legally change their gender by self identifying as a different sex and will still require medical approval. So lets begin. Why dont you talk us through yesterdays demonstrations, the sunday telegraph saying there could be ten years in jail for protesters, thatis be ten years in jail for protesters, that is a stiff sentence, for anyone who desecrates a war memorial. Tory mps are putting forward a bill about War Memorials and theyre urging the government to support that and theyre urging the government to be tougher on protesters who are engaging in that sort of behaviour. But i think the real conversation that we should be having today is probably about the protests yesterday, we saw far right groups organise in london. They were supposed to be counter demonstrations, but actually very wisely the black lives matter protest organisers had called off their demonstration. So there was nothing to counter and it looked like even at around lunchtime, so the start of the day, this is not after eight hours of being kettled by police. Already the violence had started. It did seem as if quite a substantial number of people went there to express nationalism, to drink alcohol, to cause violence, to attack the police. Those were really shocking scenes. We saw some videos on social media seeing that and that was early in the day, about 1pm. So i think that was very worrying and the Prime Minister did actually call that out as racist. He said racism has no place here and he was explicit about the fact that the far right protesters were behaving in ways that were actually racist. Let me tell you before i go to dave, we have heard from the police that a 28 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of outraging public decency after a man was photographed a p pa re ntly decency after a man was photographed apparently urinating on the memorial thatis apparently urinating on the memorial that is dedicated to Pc Keith Palmer outside the palace of westminster. The man is in custody after presenting himself at a police station. Dave, many of the front pages are saying shameful, what did you make of them . Yes it shows how we get a spiral of violence, what started as a justifiable demonstration against Racial Discrimination was hijacked by extremists and turned to violence and the people who were demonstrating yesterday had no, werent a counter demonstration. What are they demonstrating about . They have all lost sight of what this is about, when we are desecrating statues and urinating on memorials to Hero Police Officers and taking on the police, who have done nothing wrong. I think the police have done a sterling job, treading that line. At any stage they react too much, to the incitement theyre getting from some of these minority of violent protesters they can. Send it into swioi protesters they can. Send it into swror bit. 0rbit. Protesters they can. Send it into swror bit. Orbit. The frontpage of mail on sunday asks what has become of the tolerant britain that we love . Of the tolerant britain that we love . That is the mail on sundays question and inside there is plenty of graphic pictures from what happened yesterday. But i mean is that really in danger, we have thought of britain as a racially tolera nt thought of britain as a racially tolerant country, do you think that is injeopardy. Tolerant country, do you think that is in jeopardy. The mail of sunday, the commentses that you will see on social media, certainly on left there is a bit of naivety because they have promoted stories that are not true, that overestimate some of the issues. And it is no surprise that people have anti migrant sentiment as a result. And theyre saying, why are these people behaving so poorly. Im afraid a lot of time theyre stoked up by these stories. It is absolutely horrifying that in 2020 something that started off about just a grave that in 2020 something that started off aboutjust a grave injustice of a man in america, who was murdered on the street, we saw that horrifying video and that has turned into now a day of far right people causing violence on our streets. That is so shameful and it is something that we havent seen in other countries. I think we the britain need to look at that. Dave, how do you say the way the protests have gone. There is a view from some, that actually the demands, what black lives matter have said about there needs to be more racial equality in education, employs and so equality in education, employs and so on, have been overshadowed by the iow so on, have been overshadowed by the row over statues . Yes, again as i said, people have lost sight of what this is about. I think the black lives matter original demonstrations was about the death of mr floyd and people had a right to do that demonstration, if it had all gone off peacefully, it would have been fine, but it was hijacked by hard left extremists and now you get the ha rd left extremists and now you get the hard right extreme extreme i wases and we ends up with a extremists. We are arguing about statues, we shouldnt be desecrating statues. We have lost the sight of the original point of protecting the rights of black people in this country. That has been overtaken, as you have said, the splash in the sunday telegraph is about burning of flags and War Memorials. It has nothing to do with what the original protest was about. The fronts page of the mirror is shameful, far right mob huack mirror is shameful, far right mob hijack demo. As well as the police urging people not to come, because there is a Health Emergency and theyre in breach of the two metre rule that does still stand . Absolutely and the london mayor, a labourfigure was absolutely and the london mayor, a labour figure was saying, stay at home, there is the fact that it could contribute to the spread of coronavirus, but also the fact that these demonstrations were going to become violent, they knew the far right group were organising these so called protests, im not sure protesting against what, apart from racial injustice. I mean, its just. As david said, it is the turning into a different conversation. We need to keep the focus on the fact that there are huge concerns about the far right organising in this country and being allowed to do that. But lets just keep the conversation, keep the focus on the fact that there are huge racial injustices and things the government could do and havent done. We talk about the windrush report, the lamy review. Some of the reviews that theresa may implemented. They started but they we re implemented. They started but they were not implemented. Those are conversations that we need to be having. Moving from those protests and talk about the two metre rule on social distancing. David, the mail on sunday saying the Prime Minister ta kes on sunday saying the Prime Minister takes charge on the two metre rule with a restaurant boss warning of two millionjobs being lost. Some countries have a one metre rule and the World Health Organisation say one metre. Two metres, you are 1. 396 chance of picking up the coronavirus. At one metres it is 2. 6 . It is hardly a big gap. So there is feelings if you can things such as masks and sitting side by side, where droplets cant pass to the other person, you can limit that 2. 6 figure even more. So Boris Johnson has ordered a review and i suspect in the next few days we will hear he will set a date for changing it to one metre. That will mean that the Hospitality Industry in particular, like pubs, clubs, restaurants, cafes, will be able to open, because Something Like 70 say with a two metre rule they wont be able to operate. There are things such as singing in pubs, if you sing loudly you exhale, which could pass on the virus. So if they quieten the music, that could have an impact. There are all sorts of measures that are being looked at and i suspect borisjohnson will are being looked at and i suspect Boris Johnson will actually do something about this pretty soon. Otherwise there will be millions of jobs lost. We know you have been known to sing a few songs in pubs down the years mainly liverpool songing songs probably do you think this is essentially going to bea think this is essentially going to be a political review, rather than a scientific review. The government have said theyre following the science, but people like Iain Duncan Smith on the tory right are saying in the end it is a political decision, not a scientific decision . Yes, and Iain Duncan Smith is right to say that actually, because the politicians need to be honest here, the government needs to be honest, of course theyre taking scientific advice, but in the end the responsibility lies with them and theyre the ones taking the final decisions. They keep speaking headlines about the Prime Minister taking charge and assuming control. I think like here, it only makes people think, who was in charge before now . Im not sure it is as rea suring reassuring as some think. A government source said there is more to life than the r number. That will be confusing to people. We were told the r rate not going above one was crucial. Now thatis going above one was crucial. Now that is being down played. Other country have the one metre rule. But we are close to going over one for the r rate. If that was so crucial as we were told, why isnt it today . Dave the observer, they focus on another huge headache for Boris Johnson and the government, that is schools, theyre johnson and the government, that is schools, they re under johnson and the government, that is schools, theyre under pressure on that as well and this is now the childrens tzar, anne longfield, the commissionerfor childrens tzar, anne longfield, the commissioner for england, saying that actually the Prime Minister is risking childrens basic right to education. Yes, she is saying it is a very dangerous position that we are in with schools. They are supposed to be going back tomorrow. We have had the primaries returning and the secondaries are supposed to be going back. But we have all sorts of connumdrums between the government and the teachers. We have heard we have got to get children back to school and we have had some unions and a lot of parents saying, but is it safe, we dont want them to go back to school. When Gavin Williamson says we slope it down, people williamson says we slope it down, people slow williamson says we slope it down, people slow it down, people say we need our children educated. We dont get children back to school, never minds, social distancing, it will be. The whole of society. Kids who are behind wont be able to catch up. Something needs to be done to get kids back into school. The sunday telegraph are suggesting that primaries are told they can re open if they have a 15 pupil cap. Is that a way forward . Again, a lot of people will concerned about children falling back. A lot seems to depend on the Cultural Capital you get at home and the parents who can stay at home and the parents who can stay at home and the parents who can stay at home and nd educate their kids, will be atan home and nd educate their kids, will be at an advantage. The government are thinking they need parents to go back to work and they cannot do that and the economy cant open without child care. The teaching unions have pointed out that actually practically there is so many problems with this. They would need bigger classrooms, more classrooms, more teachers and if that infection rate starts going up again, we will see people off sick more. There are so see people off sick more. There are so many complications and the government seems to have said this is too difficult and abandoned plans ina way is too difficult and abandoned plans in a way that has not been efficient. In waleses it it seem it is schools re opening, they have engaged with unions, rather than attacking them and having those conversations is essential, because they know what the practicalities are of the plans. Dave, sunday express , are of the plans. Dave, sunday express, i think this is my favourite headline, stay safe, but hit the head rhine headlines. People have been shopping online during the lockdown. Yes that is the problem for the high street, their struggling with Business Rates and the decline in people browsing around shops, because of the rise of online retail. Of course theyre now opening the nonessential shops tomorrow, after a 12 week close down and the chancellor has done an interview with the sun saying we have got to adapt that lions spirit and reawa ken the have got to adapt that lions spirit and reawaken the lion spirit and get out and spend, spend, spends for britain. Alok schama has said something the same. Saying 52 of the public say they wont go shopping, despite having been stuck at home. Because there are fear. I we nt at home. Because there are fear. I went around a book shop with the chancellor on friday, to do the interview, i was spotting, i was amazed by how the shops had got screens and one way systems. The shops have made a real effort. People i think should support them. Lets just ends with another of my favourites, this is about what has happened to wimbledon strawberries. No wimbledon this year and the strawberries are the hall mark of the great tournament. The lockdown mystery is, where have wimbledon strawberries gone. Where have they gone . Wimbledon has had to be cancelled, their order for strawberries hadnt been finalised, but the suppliers had sown the seeds and we have seen suppliers preparing for this demands and itjust suspect there, because restaurants are closed. So sales of strawberries at independent stores and give some to a food bank and some will go to a jam company. I think the story was more about the two million berries wont go to waste. Dave are you missing wimbledon and strawberries. I will pop down the soup market to see i will pop down the soup market to see supermarket to see if there are any going cheap. There will be a lot on the market and it may bring the price down. But what about the cream . You cant have strawberries without cream. Youve got to have cream. Great to talk to you. Thank you for being us with. That breaking news that a 28 year old man has been arrested in essex on suspicion of outraging public decency, after a man was photographed apparently urinating on a memorial dedicated to Pc Keith Palmer, who was stabbed to death in the Westminster Bridge terror attack. A 28 year old man arrested in essex on suspicion of outraging public decency. Youre watching bbc news. It is another day of warm sunshine for most of us and some showers and the odd down pour. We have had plenty of sunshine to start, but the cloud is bubbling up and we have had cloud is bubbling up and we have had cloud near the north sea coast, because we have this easterly drift coming in off a cool north sea. It will be stubborn for some areas. For many a lot of dry, settled weather. But with some big showers. The low cloud could be stubborn and not clear. Elsewhere, after a lot of sunshine first thing, the shower clouds bubble up. Fewer than yesterday in the south east and not as lengthy for the south west. But some heavy ones around. We think wales, the midlands and east anglia, but there could be the odd one elsewhere. Some in Northern Ireland and scotland and that cloud getting burned back to the coast. 11 on the east coast and 23 in the north west highlands. Some of the showers will be slow moving with hail and lightning. They will ee over night. Another warm night with some patchy rain in eastern parts of england and scotland. We have seen that feed coming in off that easterly breeze. That is still with us, that low pressure through monday and it will be there tuesday, and wednesday. So a similarset up be there tuesday, and wednesday. So a similar set up with the detail of where the showers is is difficult. We may see another pulse of rain at some point during the night ahead and into monday in north east england and scotland. Elsewhere a scattering of heavy showers. Heaviest in the west. Again we will have low cloud for some coastal areas in the north east. On tuesday the low pressure may move and we may see more widespread showers in the afternoon with heavier ones in the east. All the time in the sunshine it will be warm. Temperatures about where they should be for this time of year in the low 20s. Plenty more on our web site.
