A vaccine may never be found. Barack obama has launched a scathing attack on the trump administrations response to the coronavirus crisis. The italian Prime Minister admits the countrys taking a calculated risk by easing a number of lockdown measures from next week. Those are our latest headlines. Sport, and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, heres katherine. The German Bundesliga became the first Major European League to return after the coronavirus outbreak with six matches taking place yesterday and a further two today. Strict protocols were in place for players and staff allowed inside the stadia. As for the fans . Well they had to watch from home or the pub in what could become the new normal for professional sport across the world. Ben croucher has more. This remember this . Its called football, but its a little different to how it used to be. Where once stood seeing spectators, now an eerie emptiness. Well there was ball boys, nowjust balls. Social distancing applied even to the coin toss, no handshakes and substitutes were two metres apart and wearing face masks. Yes, it is different but football is back. Youll make when the game was going, of course its a bit different. If youre playing without supporters, its a different atmosphere but i think we try to make the best of it and everybody was happy to be back on the pitch. On the pitch, while social distancing was never going to be possible, some contact is more avoidable than others. The first goal came in the derby between dortmund and schalke, with haaland ending a three month goal drought just three games ago. The advice was to stay at home but some are allowed down the local. The dortmund fans have been without games for a long time. Theyve been waiting. Whether its the right thing to broadcast from empty stadium, im not sure. We dortmund us are missing our so called 12 player, the yellow all the fans. My daughter and her 40 winners. The players were not going to let no crowd alter their traditional celebration. Some things never change. Unless you are at the augsburg game, foot taps all round. Now most venues had a maximum ofjust over 200 people in total including the players, staff, officials and tv personnel. So you think if you were a forward and struck a harmless shot wide of the goal that it wouldnt hit anybody right . Well, this is the former everton winger Ademola Lookman playing for rb leipzig. A whole empty stadium and he somehow manages to hit one of the cameramen. That looks like it might have song as well. It with some real force, straight onto the top of his head, poor guy. Still not entirely risk Free Standing next to the goal and an empty stadium. Away from football. Boxing promoter eddie hearn has announced plans to stage boxing shows, in the back garden of the house he grew up in to help the sport return from the coronavirus shutdown. The venue, now the Matchroom Sport headquarters, will be transformed, he says, to be able to host fights on consecutive weekends in july and august. This isnt something we just came up with last week, this is something weve been working on since this started. We are in a position now where, right now is absolutely full stea m where, right now is absolutely full steam ahead with this project and, touch wood, we keep going with the progression we have and you will see fights in mid july. And after the men had a go a fortnight ago, yesterday was the turn of the womens garden pole vault for three athletes in different corners of the world. They competed live against each other aiming to clock up the most successful clearances over two 15 minute stints at their local tracks. The olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi was the winner, and afterwards she said shed be up for taking on the leading male athletes in the same way in a few weeks time. Quickfire pole vault looks absolutely exhausting. That is all the sport for now. Back to you, ben. Thank you. We will see more later on. Now its time for a look at the papers. Welcome to our look at the stories being covered in the sunday papers. With me is the political commentatorjames millar, and the finance and property commentator anne ashworth. Good morning to you both. Thank you for being with us. Lets have a look at the front pages. Starting with the Daily Telegraph who are hailing the discovery of what they call a breakthrough treatment using blood thinners to prevent deaths from coronavirus the mirror covers the story of an eight month old baby who died of a rare childhood disease related to covid 19. The observer leads with what they say is a revolt over the easing of lockdown measures and a subsequent drop in borisjohnsons approval ratings. The mail on sunday accuses doctors of being at war with schools as the debate surrounding pupils return to classrooms continues britain on fast track to virus recovery is the express headline and the sunday times says that britains welathiest people had seen and the sunday times says that britains wealthiest people had seen 5a billion pounds wiped off their combined wealth during the two months of the coronavirus pandemic. Lets start off with, james, is that a lockdown be a juror sporting or a permanent fixture . Who knows . It certainly a lockdown be up for now. Ive won a haircut in a local raffle so, when we arrived back in the barber, thats how it will come off. Its barber, thats how it will come off. Its looking lovely. Good to know. James, why dont you kick off . We got the male who youre talking about the controversy really over the return to schools in england at the return to schools in england at the beginning ofjune. A lot of teachers and teaching unions unhappy in the mail headline is now, its doctors at war at schools. Classic male front page because this is the story that a lot of people are talking about is the possibility of sending children back in england, not in the rest of the uk. Classic mail dramatic headline, starts off with talking about the left wing unions as opposed to those right wing unions of course. There not a huge amount to it in the sense that they found a doctor who disagrees with the bma doctor who said it might not be that wise to send children back but the nature of science is that there is a certain amount of disagreement and we dont really hear from the disagreeing doctor and tell quite well down the story. As i say, its the story eve ryo ne story. As i say, its the story everyone is talking about, some good things and there like the fact that 10 of schools are not giving any work to the pupils and we had the english education secretary at the press c0 nfe re nce english education secretary at the press conference yesterday saying kids should go back in the name of equality and progress, and making sure that the most disadvantaged kids dont fall behind. Sure that the most disadvantaged kids dont fall behind. Quite interesting that the male do not lead on what is inside the paper which is an article by the Prime Minister on page 17 in which he says, yes, its more complex now but 110w says, yes, its more complex now but now we need to trust in the good sense of the british people. They could have put out on a front page, i suppose. There are some flicks of the piece on the front page story but its a kind of voice channels churchill type where hes talking about the huge effort that so many front line workers in the nhs and every other walk of life have made in this great pandemic but basically saying now its almost up to you, british, to decide how we proceed, and he is relying on what he calls the great common sense of the british to be able to take the steps they need to and not be rash, which would risk a second spike. It is extraordinary language like any dark days of march and harking back to his speeches at the time. Its kind ofan his speeches at the time. Its kind of an attempt to get the messaging back because the cabinet, the government, have been poor on their messaging in the last fortnight. They need to seize the opportunity 110w they need to seize the opportunity now to make themselves clear because there is so much conjecture about what is actually meant now. In that article in the mail on sunday, the Prime Minister does say they are putting more money into attempts to find a vaccine and if they find one to mass produce it but it also does say, frankly, we may neverfind a vaccine and i think a lot of people kind of assume there might be one within a few more months but it is quite possible they are never will be. That is the most interesting pa rt be. That is the most interesting part of the article. As and says, there was a lot of language that doesnt necessarily help anybody in any particular way but theres certainly been a change of focus or a change of emphasis over the last week or so to suggest this is going to bea week or so to suggest this is going to be a very long haul and there was a lot of talk that we will have a vaccine within a year, 18 months, but that is nonsense as we might never have a vaccine and the government seem never have a vaccine and the government seem to be slowly dropping hints in some of the documents that they released on monday about the easing of the lockdown. There was quite a few mentions of how this could go on for a long time and youll have to learn to live with that. That is true and they need to prepare the british people for that possibility. To the observers front page. There headline is revolt over easing of lockdown spreads as poll its Prime Minister. They are saying that a new opinion poll for the observer Shows Approval ratings for the governments handling of the crisis has plummeted. What do you make of that . One of the most interesting front pages because it is a semi rebellion by our very powerful regional maze. Andy burnham is speaking for these regional maze saying, we were not consulted about the easing of the lockdown when boris made the speech on sunday we had not been called, so what were we to do about life and returning to work in our cities . He is saying he and the others in this job should be at cobra meetings. Ifind this and the others in this job should be at cobra meetings. I find this very interesting because remember back when we worried about regional strategy and this idea that the government would spend lots of money in the regions, lavish them with Infrastructure Projects but instead of that happening, there seems to be that the centre will not hold. These cities are increasingly wanting to ta ke cities are increasingly wanting to take their own care with my course of action on education and the return to work which would be disastrous because weve already had this feeling of a federal uk with the wales, scotland and Northern Ireland taking a very different position on the ease of lockdown is in this fragmenting is not what we need now when we need to be working as one to cope with the recession coming down the road that is already here. We might see that fragmentation with schools returning because authorities like liverpool are saying they do not want the schools to reopen at the beginning ofjune. So it to the parents listen to. Do they listen to borisjohnson and the education secretary or the local council . I cover politics so, by nature, i am cynical to say the least but there are certainly some politics in play here. I was speaking to some scottish politicians in the week who explain the reason they are not coming out of lockdown is because they want to see what happens in england and blame westminster for the bad see what happens in england and blame westminsterfor the bad bits, ta ke blame westminsterfor the bad bits, take credit for the good bits and there is probally a bit of that going on here. As and says, bad recession coming down the track. We know the coronavirus is hitting the north west and north east hardest at the moment so i suspect there is a little bit of those metro maze looking to blame westminster for the bad stuff that happens and claim a bit more powerfor the bad stuff that happens and claim a bit more power for the other side of this, coming out and handling that recession. To the sunday times, they have their annual rich list which is a free magazine inside the paper but they are angle is that the coronavirus pandemic has white £54 billion worth of wealth from the super rich in the last couple of months and i suspect many readers hearts will not be bleeding too much but what do you think of that sort of figure . I guess its a guesstimate at the end, isnt it . Its guesstimate at the end, isnt it . Its interesting because the pop star rhianna is on the list because she is apparently quietly living in london but apart from that, you know the song says the rich get rich . Well, they havent, theyve lost money as the recession has hit their businesses and their prospects for growth in future. And there is also a certain controversy about some of the people very high up in this really important ranking. Believe me, wont you stand on this ranking really matters to those involved. It really matters to those involved. It really matters to those involved. It really matters much more than they would ever say but they have furloughed some of their staff and there will be some controversy over that. Also there are questions being asked about where was the buffer against the hard times, the idea that you run a business with some slack and some cash so that if you hit a slack and some cash so that if you hita slump, slack and some cash so that if you hit a slump, you can cope with it better, so there are broader questions being asked about this list, which is usuallyjust, my gosh, how much money have they got . Its gosh, how much money have they got . Its interesting also that a guy who was a manufacturer, sirjames dyson, is at the top and it is that the whole feeling now that we need to get back to our Manufacturing Base to be able to make stuff ourselves as the world de globalise is and i think one of the big aftermath of the scandal has been the idea that we cannot make it ourselves and if a manufacturer read the list, i think thatis manufacturer read the list, i think that is hugely significant this year. He hasnt made his billions of manufacturing, has he . Thats the thing. He has more land than the queen. Theres a slight on this because i got the press release from the sunday times and hes on the list is and Household Goods but he has a huge amount of land, including properties in singapore where he has moved his hq. White back onto the sunday mirror because theres lots of front pages to get through and youre going to the mirror. Theyve got the very sad story about a baby dying from a rare childhood disease. Kawasaki syndrome. There is a question about whether that is linked to covert 19 and how widespread that point might prove to be, and how dangerous. What do you make of that . Well first of all, this is a really sad story about an eight month old dying and because its happened in the time of coronavirus, the worst detail is the dad couldnt be there because of the times were living in which is awful on top of a tragedy. There are a lot of questions around this, im not sure whether it is alarming or alarmist but there are certainly, we are hearing increasingly stories about kids who dont seem to show, and in general could then show a huge amount of symptoms but there seems to be the sort of latent thing that some kids are being hit really badly with the sort of mystery disease. This one is kawasaki syndrome but there is a lot of symptoms that seem to hang around and it is definitely want to keep an eye on and one that will worry a lot of pa rents. Eye on and one that will worry a lot of parents. Anne, the sunday telegraph, not only as everybody looking for a vaccine but they think drugs that the new board may be able to prevent some deaths. Another interesting story and a whole range of very interesting stories across the front pages. One of the things thatis the front pages. One of the things that is happening with people who fall really seriously ill as the formation of blood clots. They will use drugs that thin the clots. This tells us how much we do not know about this disease in the way in which some peoples immune systems overrea ct to which some peoples immune systems overreact to the virus and are very much offering the most injurious element that this is what kills you. I think it is quite interesting that we do not know whether there will be a vaccine and we do not know which of the drugs will be the great solution. Maybe it willjust be a whole array of treatments because this illness seems to impact people so very differently. Also in the telegraph, alfresco pubs and dining. Just talking about the idea of maybe as part of the easing of the lockdown, we could have that, we could have alfresco cafe is and restau ra nts could have alfresco cafe is and restaurants because all Scientific Evidence seems to be that the viruses list difficult outside than inside and we have the Better Weather approaching. It has been pretty good generally for a lot of this markdown but it will presumably get better as we go intojune and july. Yellow like an interesting one. I agree with that and its an interesting range of stories but what is missing is what perhaps people expected, which is photos of loads of people outdoors ramming beaches and parks. They are not there interestingly. So it interesting it is a story about getting outside, eating and drinking. Good news if it happens but worth bearing in mind that its quite a london centric southern centric story because im not sure how many outdoor cafe sent food stores there are the further north you go and that speaking of one expensive time in scotland. Ive rarely sat outside and drank or ate. They can always stick a future is out on the pavement. This is an extraordinary story about a 35 year old coronavirus patient to spent 38 days on a ventilator but has begun to recover. There have been some extraordinary stories of recovery from this virus. This is one of those stories that does your heart good. The first thing people will think when they read the story isa will think when they read the story is a young woman, they are the people least likely to fall seriously ill with coronavirus but it also shows you to exactly what an extent being on a ventilator destroy so much of the rest of you that it leaves you in such a feeble state but dont we just cheer when we hear of somebody coming out after such time ona of somebody coming out after such time on a ventilator and think there is hope . Because at the moment, newspapers have to be very careful to make sure they give people hope and just dont make them feel really miserable every time they open one. Lets talk about the football coming back to germany. The bundesliga, thatis back to germany. The bundesliga, that is featured in the back page of nearly all the papers. The mail on sunday we have that there comments back as the headline. Germans through football can return and there are implications for englands premier league, and whether or when that comes back as well. It has to be on the back pages because there is no other sport around. It was great to see football back. A lot of people like me didnt realise how much we miss that until you see plea people playing again, even if it is in empty stadiums but there are lots of questions about it. You cannot play football and be socially distanced. That does not work. The male has pictures of players kissing after scoring goals and that doesnt seem terribly clever but it will be interesting to see what the premier league learns from this. It looks like it can be done if you are at that point in the pandemic in your country. Its a question as ever as to whether there will be a lot of discussion on the second line about whether clubs get back to it and which clubs because its all fine and well for rich clubs in the bundesliga but there are plenty of other football clubs in the country that have more pressing concerns about all this, and tv rights dont come into it so hopefully because it would be good to see it back in the country as soon as possible but certainly as soon as it is safe. What is your view, anne . From the Prime Minister downwards, theyve said they see the return of top flight football as a morale boost for the nation and some players are saying they are worried, scared about the potential repercussions and some people are saying its not the right time and people are still in hospital or dying. What is your take . Personally, i really cannot wait to be there shouting on my team actually. Ive missed that more than i could possibly say . What is your team . I am a Chelsea Supporter and i miss that feeling when you know how your team has done. I would say if your team has done. I would say if you were ill and had been owned recovering, the idea of a return to normal with life just creeping, making baby steps back to what we know, would be a huge relief. However, i sense that nothing in our lives will be quite as it was before andi lives will be quite as it was before and i think football needs to be probably dragged into the 21st ce ntu ry probably dragged into the 21st century and the new realities of the economy. I dont think the money in football the way it used to be. I think it will need to be a downsized, simpler version of what we know in the century. The great pmp we know in the century. The great pomp and the riches of the premier league. I think that maybe an era that has passed. We all wait and see what has happened what happens. Youre all admiring your bookcase there. Lots of classics. I was never invited out much as a teenager so i have a lot of books. Very impressive library. And im sure you have a lot of books as well, james. Youre my carefully curated we will say. Thank you. Thats it for the papers this hour. We will be back at half past eleven for another look at the papers. Goodbye for now. Hello, good morning.
