In a recorded message, she said the message of ve day was never give up, never despair. The United States has recorded its worst unemployment figures in generations as the economic damage inflicted by the coronavirus pandemic continues to mount. In april, thejobless rate surged to 14. 7 . The uk government is deciding whether to ease some lockdown measures next week. Some of the nations within the uk have already announced relaxations in wales people will be allowed to exercise outside more than once a day. Rallies and memorial runs have been taking place in the us to mark the killing of ahmaud arbery, an unarmed black man who was gunned down while out for a run. Authorities in georgia have charged two white men with murder. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are rachel cunliffe, comment and features editor at city am and jason beattie, assistant editor at the daily mirror. Tomorrows front pages, starting with. The telegraph shows her majesty with a photograph of her father, king george the sixth, as she gave her address to the uk earlier. The express, too, focusses on ve day and the queens message our streets are not empty, they are filled with love. The times looks to the uk Prime Minister Boris Johnsons address to the nation on sunday. It says travellers coming into the country will be quarantined for two weeks avoid a second peak. The Financial Times reports the governments plans get furloughed workers back to work that is taking shape as Boris Johnson prepares to lay out his plans to ease some of the lockdown restrictions in the uk. The guardians front page says ministers plans for schools to reopen at the start ofjune have been called into doubt after unions insisted they wouldnt consider a return without a coronavirus test and trace regime in place. So lets begin. We are going to look at the daily express first with the queens message only the seventh special message only the seventh special message in her reign. Our streets are not empty they are filled with love and care we have for each other. Rachel, idont love and care we have for each other. Rachel, i dont know what your thoughts are when you watch the queens message and if it brings back anyfamily queens message and if it brings back any family stories from the war. L huge celebration atmosphere today. I think made even more poignant perhaps, then head up and celebrations that were initially plans just because of the unprecedented situation that we are in. In the social distance street parties and really, people taking time to listen to the stories of the people who were there 75 years ago. And people who served during the war. Its a bit of a sad moment but for me my family were meant to be going to berlin in a few weeks to visit the homes of my grandparents who were forced to flee before the war. We were doing a bit of a History Lesson then but we have been using a lot of that time to look into their stories, how they met and to kind of remember their wartime story as well. A lot of families we re story as well. A lot of families were doing the same thing today. I know a lot are feeling were not sure how long the people who served in the war effort are going to be with us. So i think it this year of all yea rs has us. So i think it this year of all years has been a moment for re telling those stories and making sure that we are reliving those yea rs now sure that we are reliving those years now while we still have those voices with us. Jason, we will look at your paper it now. Never give up, never despair. You said earlier that your late grandfather never talked of the war. Im very proud of him, obviously but it was interesting he wasnt alone and that generation they went through incredible, and they went through incredible, and they came back and their priority was to rebuild the country. And i just thinks theres a slight irony here that we look back, we wish to celebrate it and we are proud. They we re very celebrate it and we are proud. They were very modest about what they did. Ithink were very modest about what they did. I think thats quite an important lesson. And maybe this is a moment that we do draw a line under it. And we dont have all of out under it. And we dont have all of our National Conversation and culture tantalized our National Conversation and culture ta ntalized by our National Conversation and culture tantalized by what happens 75 years ago. Rachel, just picking up 75 years ago. Rachel, just picking up on jasons point. 75 years ago. Rachel, just picking up onjasons point. In the last two months almost every day in the newspaper there is talk of the blitz spirit, the dunkirk spirit, is it useful to have world war ii as the road map for getting through a 21st century pandemic . Its comforting certainly. The point about war spirit was it was a moment of tragedy but also triumph and ve day back then it was a celebration. But it was also very much tinged with sadness. Youd be hard pressed to find anyfamily sadness. Youd be hard pressed to find any family who had an experience a loss. I think drawing on that spirit of, we will get through this together but there is tragedy mixed into that, its a useful benchmark for people to process their own emotions. I am not one for plastering blitz spirit on every crisis will stop i think its been particularly overdone and last couple years with the brexit crisis talking about britain going it alone just like we did back then. Church alien rhetoric. Now are facing something as tragic and as terrifying but it is in a war. And trying to find it in that way isnt particularly helpful. I understand what jason saying, i just dont think we are as a nation going to drop the war metaphors in the language anytime soon. Its too ingrained in our national psyche. Language anytime soon. Its too ingrained in our national psychem looking at the queen herself, its a stylish and one of my colleagues are saying shes the only serving head of state who is actually a veteran of state who is actually a veteran of world war ii. That gives you the kind of idea of the scale and the length of her rain and her experiences. Yes. Ithink length of her rain and her experiences. Yes. I think she has an ability to sum up the mood of the nation whatever we are harming sheet manages to put the lyrics too. Its quite incredible. At 90 for years she can still do this. 94. When she can still do this. 94. When she writes whether she writes his speeches are south or has a team around her they are very well crafted. They provide us with headlines. They were too generous i think today. They provided us with two headlines you can have the streets empty they are filled with love. 0r streets empty they are filled with love. Or you could have never give up love. Or you could have never give up never love. Or you could have never give up never despair. And your paper went with never give up never despair. We were spoiled for choice. No disrespect, good headline. The palace was too kind to us. The practical measures around the pandemic now. One of the stories on the front page of ft is furlough phase out plan take shape. Rachel, this is about the idea that some furloughed workers might get to go back part time. That seems to be common sense. Yes. And its what other European Countries are already doing or planning to do. This comes in response to the panic felt earlier this week when there was lea ked earlier this week when there was leaked or rumours from the treasury that the furlough scheme would be cut off at the end ofjune. And that would be at because the government really does want to encourage businesses to restart and people to go back to work. This is a have particular interest to me, i am currently watching this avidly. I think obviously, the furlough scheme is much more expensive than the government thought it would be. 6 million workers are already on it. It does two things, one it keeps businesses able to kind of took over and put themselves on ice rather than collapsing. Obviously if business collapsed in those job ceased to exist. It also gives furloughed workers some sense ofjob security in these very uncertain times. It keeps them engaged in the economy rather than making them unemployed. We were talking earlier about this shocking, staggering unemployment figures in the us. The idea that instead of cutting it off and either you go back to work or thats it, instead saying you might be able to go back to work pa rt time, be able to go back to work part time, depending on how demand rises, which businesses are able to restart. Really does make a lot of sense. You got to remember, its not just the pumps in the restaurants that were talking about here, its all of the indirect businesses that have been hit because of social distancing measures have meant that the demand for those services they put out just the demand for those services they put outjust isnt there. I think the idea of part time work and allowing people to get used to it and slowly, furlough does make a lot more sense. In this paper, this article i should say, it goes on to look at the Prime Minister speech that he is due to deliver on sunday. One of the issues he seems to have to work out the uk is a long country before nations. At the moment the nations what seem to be wanting to have their different decisions in terms of the lockdown. How will this resolve itself . Its difficult in terms of, they have a right to make their own policies. Scotland and wales have individual Health Services so they are getting possibly, slightly different advice. They have their own unique situation in terms of infection rates. So you can understand why it makes sense for them to make decisions which will protect their nations or regions. But the difficulty here, some the effect belgium on holland, actual line there. We could end up ina actual line there. We could end up in a situation lets say the first minister of wales opening Garden Centres on monday. We presume, we dont know that borisjohnson on sunday evening would Say Something similar. Suddenly get people making. Going across the border. I dont know but you can see the difficult tea certainly of where they dont march too closely together you going to get kind of disruption, resentment and confusion. So its quite, on social distancing do you stay the same . We are going to look at the Daily Telegraph now. Youre talking about some of the potential problems within the uk, some of the macro, some of the micro gestures the Prime Minister may announce. Onejester according to the telegraphjohnson to recommend facemask for all who returned to work. And companies will pgy returned to work. And companies will pay. Rachel, it does feel, given the opinions of other countries eventually we will be asked to wear facemask but on public transfer transport. I understand that something that may or has been asking for first suck quite a while. I think even if were not asked to do that, i sense a cultural shift towards that. Facemask, the nonsurgical rukl grade obviously medical workers, front line nhs workers have medical grade facemask that enabled to protect them as well. But what face coverings do the kendrick general type the government is suggesting that businesses provided that everyone wears particular on Public Transport, we are not sure how much they protect the we are but what they do seem to do is reduce transmission. So if you are wearing a face back and you have covid i9, and youre not aware of it youre much less likely to pass it on if youre wearing a face covering. Therefore its notjust about protecting you its a sign of social, civic response ability. Thats definitely the case in Asian Countries like japan and south korea where its common to see people wearing face masks on Public Transport. What theyre saying is i ama transport. What theyre saying is i am a considerate citizen and i am not going to give you whatever infection i may have. Giving the sense of community and public spirit over the last two months i think that would be something that people would adopt and i think would make people feel a lot safer going to work if they have that very clear visual symbol that other people in their communities were respecting that too. Jason, it seems were actually quite adaptable to things we didnt think we could do a few months ago, lockdowns, quarantines and so on. Masks might be the next step . Yes, theres been a lot of confusion over theirs from the government and from england. Another example earlier nicholas sturgeon has recommended facemask on Public Transport and shopping. We were told it wasnt advisable originally and borisjohnsons now come out it wasnt advisable originally and Boris Johnsons now come out and said but it is. He thinks it may encourage people if nothing else to have the confidence to go back to work. The science, to be fair, still quite weak on this. Theyre saying wash your hand is by far much more effective, theres a danger wearing a facemask they could actually get contaminated by other people kind of coughing and sneezing on them. Its a difficult one. The other comfort not concern i think they have, chris hobson of the nhs figures if they start making facemask required for everybody will put pressure on the nhs supplies. Other countries have led to providing for free in that situation. Its a difficult judgement call will it be adaptable . I dont know. Lets see. Its kinda manage on aeroplanes to stop to eat and drink. We are going to move onto the guardian. The most dangerous thing apart from the virus is someone throwing out a date and saying something will happen by such and such a date and then immediately that date gets called into question. Rachel thats what weve got here school dates. Yes, this is a government aim and it is only an aim to have some schoolchildren back in their classrooms by the ist ofjune. And teachers unions have in the guardian written about their concerns saying they would not be prepared to go back to schools until there was a test, traced the net trace, isolate on the app weve heard about on the isle of wight. Basically teachers are understandably very worried about the rest to them. The governments got a real problem on the hands because you cannot re start sections of the economy while you have millions of working parents who cannot go back to work as long as their children are in school. So youve got a whole load of workers who would continue to be at home bound. Im in a house with two small children and work is challenging to say the least. Also the signs on this, other countries, switzerland in particular has shown that children are not as infectious, perhaps not infectious at all compared to adults particular children under ten. So there has to bea children under ten. So there has to be a way of getting more children, perhaps on the rota system, perhaps a couple of days a week, fewer children in classrooms, there is got to be getting the nations children back to school. There are children who are missing out on crucial months of education. And we know from lots of past experience and research that children who will suffer most in this situation are the ones that are socially disadvantaged already felt that they have to be a way for government to work with teachers unions to get children back to school as soon as possible. Another problem the Government Faces is featured in the Yorkshire Post. Councils could go bankrupt over toll from virus crisis. Yorkshire post goes into great detail about whats happening in your chart great detail about whats happening in yourchartand great detail about whats happening in your chart and the problems it faces. This is not unique to york shire. Im very glad they raised it. Councils across the country have been raising alarm on theirs. They did geta been raising alarm on theirs. They did get a 3. 2 billion package of support from the government to try and help them through. Counsel i think this is not nearly enough but as the Yorkshire Post points out councils in yorkshire alone facing a kind of 600 million shortfall. Top that off councils around the rest of england you got a significant problem. What happened is its twofold, councils went into this very tragic situation from a bad position because they borne the brunt of the cuts made by the conservatives since 2010. By a disproportionate and felt the burden of financial cuts fell on local authorities more than any other area. So that they were already struggling. And now income in addition to the money they can raise from the council tax and the Central Government art has also collapsed. That extra money from parking, leisure centres, all thats gone. And yet they are being asked to do more because of coronavirus. For example theyve been asked to make sure there is no Homeless People in the street. At some point you have to pay for it. So, what were getting ina lot to pay for it. So, what were getting in a lot of counsel said its actually 111 calls basically going bankrupt. And ijust want actually 111 calls basically going bankrupt. And i just want to bring us bankrupt. And i just want to bring us up to date. We are talking a little bit about schools story. On the guardian front pagejune the ist school plans and doubt. It talks about schools that article in england and wales. It is worth us saying that is of course wrong. The Welsh Government press office has beenin Welsh Government press office has been in touch about schools in wales the Education Minister has already said on the seventh of made the situation regarding the schools will not change on june situation regarding the schools will not change onjune the ist. That article, where it applies to whales does not reflect what was said by the welsh press office. We will move on to ourfinal story. On the welsh press office. We will move on to our final story. On the times, all arrivals to be quarantined in airports does it possibly fit into the category why this wasnt done to wa nt to the category why this wasnt done to want to go . Why was it not done three months ago or when he could have made a difference. Not doing it more recent past is while the infection was still getting under control in the uk it wouldnt have helped particularly. Now that it is ata helped particularly. Now that it is at a level im at when it comes to a level that the government feels it is under control and is able to track and trace cases that its really important to monitor people coming into the uk. And that would be with two week quarantine thousand pounds fine to break it. But you wouldnt be able to self isolate in your own home whether you like that rather than going to your Quarantine Centre where in fact might be much higher. Jason, not much of a choice you wrist going abroad and then forte 814 day self isolating or camping. Stay occasioning is the new thing what finally, would you choose . I quite like camping as long as you can stay in hotel to recover. I think that have to be the word 2020. Jason from the daily mary and rachel, thank you so much. And mum will catch up with all the sports news but let me first review but first let me leave you with some of the highlights from todays ve day commemorations. Trumpet blares. Long live the course of freedom god save the king. Trumpet blares. Hello, im jane dougall with your latest sports news. A week today, germanys top two leagues will return behind closed doors the first in europe to start up again. But tensions over how the premier league will restart in england, are growing. Home and away matches will be played in germany. However, the premier league has proposed to use neutral venues to deter fans from gathering around their home grounds. The bottom six clubs including brighton oppose the idea, fearing that neutral venues will put them at a disadvantage. We should finish the season as its started, albeit there are some different circumstances, and play our home games in our home ground because thats the competitive advantage for us. The home games, thats fair and set, and thats what we set out to do. Now, with the current situation, i think everybody accepts that has to be behind closed doors, of course, but we dont agree with the policy of going to neutral venues. Manchester city have said they will not discipline kyle walker after he was spotted breaching lockdown rules yesterday. The defender was followed by photographers visiting his sisters house and then his parents. Walker subsequently made a statement on social media, which reads. I have recently gone through the toughest period of my life which i ta ke full toughest period of my life which i take full response ability for her. This is no longer solely affecting me but the health of my family and my Young Children to. It is sad but i feel my life is my Young Children to. It is sad but ifeel my life is being my Young Children to. It is sad but i feel my life is being scrutinised without any context. Football is back well, in south korea, at least. The countrys K League Season was meant to start back in february, but was delayed because of the coronavirus. These pictures give us a taste of what football might look like in post lockdown britain. No crowds, of course. And you can see the Coaching Staff and substitutes are wearing masks. Jeonbuk motors beat bluewings 1 0. It was lee dong gook with the goal in the 83rd minute. Well, south koreas most famous current player, son heung min, has completed his compulsory three week military training in his home country. The tottenham striker finished near the top of his class at the Marine Corps Training camp. As he won a gold medal with south korea at the asian games in 2018, son was exempt from serving 21 months military service. Lionel messi and his Barcelona Team mates returned to training earlier today, ahead of the possible resumption of football in spain. Theres hope that matches will start again injune, but la liga are yet to announce a date. Luis suarez has also been on the Training Pitch for the First Time Since injuring his knee back in january. Barcelona had a two point lead over real madrid when the league was paused in march. Now, we know that lockdowns been a very difficult period for many people, especially those who are vulnerable and those relying on support groups. The former boxer Sugar Ray Leonard won six world titles at five weights between 1979 and 1989, but hes also fought alcohol and drug addiction. Leonard has been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in person for 15 years but, like many since lockdown, he has continued to participate remotely. I cant go to meetings now, but im on zoom. I get on zoom and ijoin meetings, aa meetings that are people from all over the world. And were watching this because the technology is so amazing. It was scary. I was afraid to go on camera and say, hi, guys, im sugar ray and im an alcoholic. That was tough. That was tough, but im Getting Better now. Im feeling more comfortable talking about this, talking about these things that are so stigmatized. Thats it. There is more on all those stories on the bbc sport website. Bye for now. Hello. There are lots of weather changes on the way as we go through the rest of this weekend. Still some warmth in the day ahead, but it will be turning colder in northern scotland and much colder elsewhere across the uk by sunday. And windier as well. Now, whats going on . Cold air lurking close to northern scotland saturday night into sunday will surge south. Not a huge amount of rain at least towards england and wales, and with that cold air, a stronger wind coming down from the north or north east as well. We start saturday with temperatures well above freezing, a lot of dry weather around, but in that colder air we have a weather system near to northern scotland and that will bring the rain heavier and more widespread across northern scotland during the day with a strengthening wind. Elsewhere in scotland and Northern Ireland, sunny spells, one or two show could see a few heavy and thundery showers developing through parts of wales, northern england, the midlands and lincolnshire into the afternoon. Across east anglia and southern england, largely sunny, temperatures could be as high as 25 degrees celsius, just nine or ten degrees in northern scotland with the rain. Now, we know the cold air is going to win out through the weekend. This is the process overnight and into sunday morning. By the way, channel islands, maybe close to the south coast of england, there could be a few heavy showers. But its wet weather coming south through scotland and Northern Ireland with the colder air going into sunday morning. Look how mild it is, though, to start sunday in the south, where therell still be some early sunshine around. Now, there could be some snow following the cold air in scotland to start off on sunday, a few wintry showers around as well. Cloud, not a huge amount of rain left as the weather system works south across england and wales, introducing the colder air on sunday. And for all, it is going to be much windier as well. Strong, gusty north northeast winds, 35 45 mph or so, at their strongest along these north sea coasts. Just seven, eight, nine degrees celsius, temperatures 10 15 degrees colder by sunday compared with saturday. And then on monday morning, a frost for many of us to start the day, so gardeners and growers, take note of that. Now, it is High Pressure close by into next week. That does mean a lot of dry weather, but still the air coming down from a chilly direction. And the wind is going to gradually ease as the week goes on. So, for next week, High Pressure, a lot of dry weather, frosty night at first, the wind easing. Becomes a little bit less chilly eventually. This is bbc news. Im James Reynolds with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. Marking the 75th anniversary of victory in europe.
