Lets take a look at tomorrows front pages. In this article the ft talks about trade unions and Business Leaders are apparently at loggerheads over borisjohnsons back to work strategy. What is happening here . There are certainly tensions brewing between the government, the trade unions and business as they plan for some employees to return back to work. Earlier today, buzzfeed got a hold of several leaked documents which showed the governments plans to get people back into offices. It included a lot of social distancing measures, staggering when people alive, how they leave the building and setting up workstations so people are not as close to each other. But the concern is once people start to lose their homes and go back to the office, the virus could spread more rapidly again. Already, the government are trying to shield themselves from being the culprit from that. The government wa nts culprit from that. The government wants business to take on some of the burden, but the fear is when somebody does go back to work and tragically is infected with the virus and passes away, a lot of fingers will be pointed at whose fault it is. This is difficult because it is a very contagious disease and we know how easily it can spread. And sadly when people leave their homes there is the risk they could become reinfected and thatis they could become reinfected and that is why we are talking about testing and tracing. There are ways the government think that can be more contained but they will be a risk element until we have something as serious as a vaccine. That could be months away and it could be years away. How do you balance workers going back to the office . It is very difficult and nobody wants to be left with the blame. Dawn, the guardian talking about keir starmer and he is backing workers concerns. But then Business Leaders are saying, we have got to start thinking about Small Businesses and how they will cope. If you give them more admin and more workplace risk assessments, that bureaucracy for these companies will be very difficult in an already difficult time. It is a tough one isnt it . In some ways it is but essentially the government have to put in place, the government have to put in place, the government have to make sure people are safe to return to work so people who have asthma, people who are pregnant or with Underlying Health conditions are not risking their lives. For Small Businesses it will bea lives. For Small Businesses it will be a bigger burden than it is for big businesses. The government have to factor that in and help Small Businesses. But what they should not do is relax restrictions for everybody, putting lives at risk purely for the sake of a couple of Profit Margins. That is exactly what the unions are arguing. The unions are there to protect their workers and they are saying they dont want their workers to go back to work if there is a risk they can die. If the government dont help businesses to make workplaces safer for their workers, there is the risk people will go on strike, rightly, because they are afraid for their lives. You have to make sure the government are giving that Small Business enough support financially. Big businesses like mcdonalds, who are able to buy Safety Equipment in bulk and make sure it doesnt hit the bottom line, dont have to worry as much and cant afford to take this in. Smaller businesses have to be kept afloat and if you are a Small Business and your Profit Margins are hit, the government should be able to absorb that. But if you are a Small Business and the government dont help you and your workers die on top of that, because if your only concern is Profit Margins, a worker dying also hits that as well. So both Small Businesses and workers have a lot to gain from the government properly making sure theseissues government properly making sure these issues are ironed out. Your response, kate . The leaked documents we found today said they would not be sending workers back right away. Those are more vulnerable groups will be sheltered and encouraged to work from home. I would also say, i dont think people are worried about a few Profit Margins here and there. Were looking at Small Businesses in particular, so many of which could be out of business in a matter of weeks if the economy doesnt get started again. We are already spending an unprecedented amount money tackling this virus. Yes, it is being trialled on the isle of wight for Health Care Workers first, but up to 80,000 households should be able to download this app by the end of the week. If it is successful, it could be distributed across the uk. Essentially, your phone through bluetooth will connect with other phones when you come into close proximity with someone and if you test positive for covid i9 you would alert the authorities and people you have been around will get notification. Likewise, you will get a notification if the app thinks you have been with somebody with covid i9. The idea is you dont have to shut down society, just contain where the virus is breaking out and you can get people to test and self isolate. But it is the trial phase and there have been queries as to why the uk has gone for such a centralised approach leaving questions over privacy. There has been tax and breaches with sensitive nhs data and there will be concerns about that. The government is trying to put people at ease but has decided it wants to test this model of testing and tracing because it is key to exiting the lockdown. The interesting thing is, the south koreans did this awhile didnt they . Yes, absolutely. It has been a slow response from the government in many respects. South korea, as soon as there were a few cases went into making sure they tested as much as possible and they started Contact Tracing. There were some interesting findings from south korea. They were able to find the vast majority of cases came from a handful of people at one church in south korea. If this isle of wight model works well, it means if i go to my church in clapham and somebody tests positive, thenl clapham and somebody tests positive, then i know i have been in close proximity. What will be interesting to see with the isle of wight, especially because they have an higher than average elder population, is how the government managed to contact and trace people who are older and dont have smartphones. How you manage to get in touch with those who are most vulnerable, people who are more likely to contract the disease or people who are poorer, dont have smartphones, are homeless and may be migrants who dont have access to any phone which can download this app. It will be interesting to see how we make sure this is properly rolled out amongst the entire population and hopefully it can contain the virus and stop new cases in the isle of wight. It can be further trialled throughout the community in the mainland and in Northern Ireland. In the telegraph, the front page says more than half of all adults are now paid by the state. That includes the 6. 3 million e mentioned and people who have applied for universal credit, those who have lost theirjobs because of universal credit, those who have lost their jobs because of the universal credit, those who have lost theirjobs because of the covid crisis. The chancellor has said this is not sustainable. You know, these are very difficult financial and Economic Times and for every statistic, there is a life affected by thejob statistic, there is a life affected by the job loss and the furlough scheme, the cut in salary and the rest of it. It goes back to what we we re rest of it. It goes back to what we were saying about the importance of getting more people back into work. What the government has been successful in their slogan of staying home, protect the nhs and save lives, understandably we cannot ask people just to work out their front door without some fear because they have been told it is important to stay inside. Balancing that between the treasury, number ten officials and getting the economy kick started, it is going to prove difficult and i think it will be a long process. One of the big issue is the telegraph frontpage is gearing up towards, after the covid crisis dissipates, once people are able to go back to work and resume any kind of normal life, then we will be looking at a conservative party who will almost certainly turn around and say we have rode the wave of austerity. Rishi sunak said if you keep people injobs, it is cheaper in the long run than having people lose those jobs, putting them on benefits and trying to get them back into work and also hurting business. Essentially, it feels as though the government are preparing the wider public for the idea that after this happens, we will see a second wave of austerity, it will be 2010 all overagain and we of austerity, it will be 2010 all over again and we will see cuts again as the treasury seek to try and claw back a lot of this money. I wouldnt rule out austerity as being one of the options, but Boris Johnson made it clear when he was running last year to be leader of the party, that he actually had reservations of austerity in 2010. But given the fact this is a one off spending spree as opposed to the structural deficit that existed back in the crash when we were spending so far outside of the uks means, means this government will look at the way to tackle this debt over a period of time. It wont be spending this much every month for the future. Hopefully they can slow and steady tackle it rather than the austerity and during the crash. It will be hard to get away from that. It will help with the fact the whole world is in this for the long haul and it will almost be a year. It has been interesting in many ways, under horrible circumstances, a wonderful social experiment and watching what people are willing to do for the health and safety of strangers. Young people like myself have been self isolating and making the concerted effort not to go out and see people, not to her, not to touch and have Human Interaction, because you dont want to be spreading an infection that might not hurt you statistically as it would hurt others, whether you know them or not. Now talking about a gap year that seems a lot less likely that they will be travelling to the other side of the world, they will be having a lot of interesting Life Experiences with Human Interaction at all. It is quite big when you think about it from that perspective and how long this will be necessary will certainly have a toll on a lot of Mental Health issues and the state of all of our well being and that has to be taken into account as well.
