Hello. This is bbc news with lukwesa burak. Well be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment first the headlines. Sweeping and extraordinary measures to deal with coronavirus the forced closure of pubs, restaurants, and gyms, and an unprecedented rescue package for workers and businesses it came as the government promised to pay all employees 80 of their salary up to £2,500 a month an unprecedented move, said the chancellor but for businesses across the country, theres huge anxiety. A major London Hospital becomes the first in the uk to temporarily run out of Critical Care capacity for coronavirus patients. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are olivia utley, deputy leader writer at the sun, and nicola bartlett, Political Correspondent at the daily mirror. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. The daily mail marks this historic day it says the Prime Minister has finally shut down pubs, cafes and restaurants in a bid to tackle coronavirus. The telegraph shows borisjohnson delivering his new measures earlier, which he says will save thousands of lives. The i weekend looks at the radical move announced by the chancellor to pay the salaries of people out of work. The times also focusses on number iis new measures to pay 80 of furloughed workers wages. As does the Financial Times which says the move is backed by the unions. You stay in, we pay out. The mirror also writes of the governments plans. And the sun says what im sure many of us were thinking we all need a drink in response to todays new measures to tackle coronavirus. We are going to start off with the front page of the daily mail and if you can kick us off, finally shut down. Yes, and i think it is that word, finally, and the mail is one of the most critical front pages because of this measure of shutting down all of these places where people can congregate and socialise has been talked about for a while now but the government has been really reluctant to do it. It is a mixture of things. Firstjohnson kept saying we were not the kind of country that did this kind of thing. He has a word ineligible right to go to the right. He was hoping it would happen without this kind of measure. But the compliance has just not been high enough and they have finally had to do it. Some would properly question whether it should have been done earlier but the government insist they are listening to scientific advice. I suppose also, you would have thought lessons learned. If you go back to the original epicentre of this, you had china, you have seen what they did, you have italy, they have gone into lockdown and quarantine pretty quickly. But it is worth pointing out that the uk is quite a long way behind even france and spain so actually we have put in measures quite a lot earlier. They might have done it technically before us on a chronological time but in effect we have put measures in earlier and worth pointing out that no one wants a Prime Minister who is trying to cut down on peoples freedoms sol think if you can show himself to be relu cta nt, think if you can show himself to be reluctant, probably, then perhaps people understand the seriousness of the situation a little bit more. There are a couple of reasons why he held off until today to make this very draconian changes to the weight we live our lives. You said we are probably slower behind, dont you think it is also partly because we are not testing are not getting a true feel of coronavirus figures and cases out there . I think our testing, as far as i am away, a couple of days ago, it has slowed down in the last week but we were pretty high and the nhs is now upping it by 20,000 a day, i think. I think that is what they are aiming to do in the future. When we had the dip in testing it must be because the government and nhs did not know how we were going to cope. There seem how we were going to cope. There seem to have rectified that pretty quickly, i hope anyway. Rishi sunak begging companies not to lay off their workers. Do you get the feeling they are going to listen to him . That is a critical thing. Feeling they are going to listen to him . That is a criticalthing. I looked at the measures the government has put in. They are very much voluntary measures. This unbelievable package is based on companies wanting to do that, keep this up because the government hopes they will be able to keep them effectively almost in sick mode on the payroll, not actually working but ready when it digs up again. It isa but ready when it digs up again. It is a huge gamble on his part and on businesses part but the nature of this means government are going to have to trust each other. Government and business. The front page of the daily telegraph, the state to pay wages as vm orders a national shutdown. How much is this going to cost us . They do not know. No, that is what is so incredible. A brand new no, that is what is so incredible. A brand new conservative chancellor, obviously keen, an enormous appetite to prove his credentials and here is saying we do not know how long it will take. We are essentially writing a blank cheque. It is a huge gamble. The Prime Ministerand writing a blank cheque. It is a huge gamble. The Prime Minister and the government having to put trust in businesses and businesses having to trust the government but the truth is that no one has any other option. This is what it has. But it is a hugely bold move. It is so crazy watching the governments and up and saying we do not know. We do not know what were doing here. It is quite alarming, really. The front page of the telegraph also going through other announcements made today and for parents and students, the decision to close the schools but more importantly how a levels and gc and that that is unclear. The shoes of which normally take months are taken in a matter of days. A really strange time for students. For all those who are hoping or forced to sit x sams, basically the government has said today, it has not finalised but qualifications would be worked out by teachers in a range of different data from mock exams to coursework to how they have covered attendance and everything throughout the year and mostly the response has been pretty positive but there is some concern that it does leave things open to individual teachers any bases they have people do not on with their teacher et cetera. The Teaching Union say they trust teachers to make this decision but it is a big ask and for some people, they may actually choose, because there is this option, to ta ke because there is this option, to take an exam next year instead but it is going to be a very strange few months for those involved. Strange inta ke months for those involved. Strange intake for the next year. That is sent to the front page of the mirror. Olivia to you, i know it is your paper nicola. In terms of the headline, you stay in, we pay out. There has been some criticism from labour many people saying it is time for the parties to come together. No point scoring and settling the Union Backing what the government have done. Yes and obviously, unions backing a conservative government. A small Silver Lining to all of this is that we have had so many years, brexit, really nasty election, so many years of. At each others throat, politics and no issue has managed to get around the two Party Politics system so Something Like social care which would be solved best if the two parties Work Together, no one has managed to solve that issue. Perhaps the one Silver Lining of all of this is the parties are learning quickly how to Work Together and how not to turn everything into a dusty row and perhaps of that can fit into our next cycle of normal politics with things that back to normal, perhaps it will be a few issues which can be solved better through Cross Party Consensus solved better through Cross Party Consensus and it is refreshing to see the Labour Government not immediately. The opposition not immediately. The opposition not immediately having an anti virus reaction, a lot of thought and analysis and a Jeremy Corbyn taking some interesting and important point. The premises question, proper analysis of what the government is doing and Boris Johnson analysis of what the government is doing and borisjohnson replied, yes, thank you, that is a good point and take it into consideration. think the point is that politicians working together, they know that the public would absolutely have no trust with political point scoring at the moment. Its such a difficult situation. The way in which it hasnt awoke, although a lot of these decisions have been made really quickly, quite rightly they might not been that front foot scrutiny, there are already examples of the parties, as olivia pointed out, working together. Mark hancock thanked jonathan at the other day because of the points labour pointed out they had not taken into account. Some issues to do with employment, wages, renters, they have come through. Other politicians working together. A labour mp responsible for making sure that those who worked in Funeral Homes and arranged funerals were under the key workers list meaning the children of school age can still go to school and be looked after. It is actually. It has been really interesting the way people can co operate in these times. It is shame it has taken this depth of disposition for that. But something that can be learned into the future. Lets turn to the front page of the times and, just a little breakdown of some of the measures already discussed. But adding the vat, and also some sort of reaction from some of the banks as well . Deutsche bank has predicted this will cause the biggest recession in a century. 6 down. The whole british economy. Which is unprecedented. The point is whether this can be, what the government is trying to do, basically press a pause button, getting visitors to follow so they can come back when the business is ready. They will be a huge Economic Party at the end when people are let out again and allowed to spend money so perhaps the aim is to make this a very deep and a short lived a recession. The problem is, that is not how things work. Some businesses willjust disappear. The danger is this is a deep and long recession but we will see how it plays out. One of the figures on the front pages of the times comforts from the Resolution Foundation which attempted to put a figure to the measures announced today. If they paid the wages of an estimated i million employees for three months that would cost the treasury 4. 2 billion in addition to the measures already announced. The sums were about absolutely huge. Institute actually was quite wary about some of the measures and the sheer amount of the measures and the sheer amount of money that the government has pledged. And the open ended nature of it. They were very frank in their press c0 nfe re nce of it. They were very frank in their press Conference Today that they dont know how much its going to cost. As olivia said, that is a huge thing for a government to admit that they are pledging to spend money without any idea of how much that will actually be. And just thinking back, even a few short weeks and months, the idea that a tory government would be in this position considering all of the debates around labours spending plans. It just kinds of thoughts it into really how serious the situation is that a tory chancellor would stand there and say, im turning on the ta bs there and say, im turning on the tabs andi there and say, im turning on the tabs and i dont know when im going to turn them off again. The taps have been turned on in europe as well. There was an announcement today. Lets turn to the guardian. A little in brief section on the front page. The week uk changed. Olivia. couldnt download the guardians front page. Would be possible to go to the other one. Just your quick feeling about how the landscape of the uk has changed. How will it be remembered this week has worked yes. I think closing down of the uksocial life is just i think closing down of the uksocial life isjust so. Going back to ed conways piece in the times. In a lot of ways, were going to get out of this using war measures. This is more serious than war in a lot of ways. In a war, you have backups but not lockouts in the same way. You dont have brits not being allowed to go out and exercise, normal freedoms. I think this week will be remembered for ever and its. Freedoms. I think this week will be remembered for everand its. It will be one of those times where we re will be one of those times where were you then when Boris Johnson closed down the pubs et cetera. I think there is no getting around about how big this whole thing is. That whole notion of britain keeping calm and carrying on was wrong because this is deadly serious, nicola. Yes, and i think it is really interesting that. I believe that famous poster was never actually used in the war because it was considered, i think, a actually used in the war because it was considered, ithink, a bit, kind of, too jolly and too simplistic for the situation. I think what were learning with this situation that its actually a really strange feeling were being asked to do. I think back to other crises that ive lived through and a lot of them are to do with things like terrorism where the advice is to carry on. You know, to keep living as normal a life as possible. Do not show them at that youve got theyve got to you. A virus does not work like that. All of our instincts which are to go see our loved ones and keep them close and to see friends to keep our spirits up. We cant do that. And ive just keep our spirits up. We cant do that. And ivejust been keep our spirits up. We cant do that. And ive just been thinking a lot over the last few days about how maud difficult this would be if we do not have technology. We are doing this this evening via skype and im sure, especially older people in the country, frantically learning how to use all these different technologies. It is so much easier to be able to keep in touch and keep their spirits up. Lets finish off with the front page of the sun. What a week, time free drink. Yes, time for a a week, time free drink. Yes, time fora drink and a week, time free drink. Yes, time for a drink and we cant go to the pub. I think what quite a lot of newspapers and definitely the son trying to do now, has been a social hub for britain. The way is to socialise in pubs and restaurants, the way were going to socialise now is through communication and on the newspapers could be a good point to rally around. When trying to keep up as much of the fun side of the suns cove rage as much of the fun side of the suns coverage as much as possible. Theyre trying to boost morale in the country which is going to be more important than ever before. 0k, we will ever there for another. Olivia, nicola, thank you very much indeed. Enjoy what could be a sober weekend, you never know. Thank you very much. Thats it for the papers tonight. Dont forget you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. Its all there for you 7 days a week at bbc. Co. Uk papers and if you miss the programme any evening you can watch it later on bbc iplayer. Thank you olivia and nicola. Goodbye. Hello, im maz farookhi with the sports news. The sporting calendar continues to be disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic with the england and Wales Cricket board confirming that the season wont start before may 28th. The county championship was due to start on april 12th, but the ecb says its begun working on a revised, condensed schedule across both the mens and womens game forjune, july and august. Our cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew says todays announcement means no professional cricket will be played in england untiljune. The board will reconvene in mid april to assess how things have moved on but they will be no professional cricket before june moved on but they will be no professional cricket beforejune at the earliest. Finances are crucial and commitments to broadcasters needs to be fulfilled so the hope is that money spinners, such as the tests against west indies and pakistan and also the t20 blast can be shifted but preserved in a condensed season that runs into september. The big question is, the launch of the hundred, the new hundred bowl competition that is promised more of an Entertainment Experience than merely cricket and was surely there for couldnt be run behind closed doors. The Rugby Union Season is officially over for all levels below the premiership. The rfu confirmed the decision earlier. The move applies to all league, cup and county rugby in england, meaning the championship the tier below the premiership will finish with at least seven rounds to play. The premier 15s the top division of womens rugby in england has also ended early following the decision. The Welsh Rugby Union has confirmed its also cancelled all league and cup competitions this season too. Well Premiership Rugby sides may be forced to take drastic action if the Pandemic Forces them to go without income for six months thats according to gloucesters chief executive lance bradley. It comes as the club along with saracens, wasps and worcester all announced pay cuts of 25 percent from the start of april. Sarries, wasps and worcester say these cuts wont apply, though, to their lowest pa id workers. The World Snooker championship has also been postponed organisers hope they can reschedule next months tournament forjuly or august. Judd trump had been aiming to win a seventh ranking event in one season with the defence of his world title at the crucible in april, but the lack of tournament snooker at the moment is of real concern for those players further down the world rankings. World snooker tour chairman barry hearn insists hes mindful of the sports lower earners. We are looking at behind closed doors in a sterile environment for a limited number of players to keep them occupied and laying and earning. There are self employed people. They dont get paid when they dont play. And i know also that the governing body, is looking at the size of their reserves and how they can help in the intermediary. Depending on the situation with the virus. The new chairman of uk athletics nic coward has suggested that the tokyo 2020 summer olympics should be postponed because of the pandemic. Coward says to leave the situation as it is is creating so much pressure in the system and that it has to be addressed. But preparations as it stands continue as normal, with british delegates currently injapan, finding out more about the facilities. One of those on the trip told us tokyo 2020 officials are nervous but that they will undoubtedly be ready to host the event currently still scheduled forjuly. The japanese are going to be ready and they are setting up what looks like it will be a fantastic games. They are obviously very nervous with the circumstances going on at this stage. My gut says the chances are 5050. Stage. My gut says the chances are 50 50. Respecting it to be a bit more frenetic but they are in a calm space. They are well progressed with their plans and the village is outstanding and the venues are looking at great. They are getting ready. The olympic flame has arrived injapan too as plans for the torch relay ahead of those Olympic Games continue albeit scaled back with organisers closing daily ceremonies to the public and urging spectators to avoid forming crowds along the route. Our correspondent Rupert Wingfield hayes was there for us. Japan seems to be doing quite a good job of controlling the epidemic here. Because of that, the japanese government is saying, look, were full still full stea m government is saying, look, were full still full steam ahead for the 24th july. The full still full steam ahead for the 24thjuly. The relay, the torch relay will begin as it is supposed to next week and it will go on this 121 day relay around the whole of japan. They are still planning for all of this to go ahead but i have to say, there are many, many other voices here and many people have spoken to, both experts and former governor two government officials, the former governor of tokyo who said to me there is very little chanceit said to me there is very little chance it can go ahead as scheduled on 25july 24th ofjuly. Even if everything is under control here, locally in japan, or over, everything is under control here, locally injapan, or over, what about the rest of the world . How can you hold the olympic s when it is going on elsewhere . I think we dont know and there is a huge amount of uncertainty and we are waiting for the ioc and who and the japanese government to make a decision but they say at the moment, it is still too early to make this decision and they are going to have full steam ahead for the opening ceremony. And finally with schools across the country now closed, we know that parents are trying a bit of homeschooling with their children and that doesnt change even if you are a premier league footballer. Have a look at this this is liverpools james milner taking the preparation for his newjob very seriously. Here he is sharpening pencils, getting them at the ready as he prepares for lessons. Plenty of them there look no slacking off it seems in mr milners classes and thats all the sport for now. Hello there. More of us enjoyed skies like these across the uk during friday but more sunshine to go around and what a glorious picture this was from the cockermouth area of cumbria. It wasnt like this everywhere though. Further south, we still had those pesky weather fronts. This area of cloud and even into the afternoon, we had a little bit of rain reported in the hastings area of east sussex. So does stay pretty dull and damp air. We can develop into this weekend, we have a lot of dry weather coming our way. The next two hours, there is just weather coming our way. The next two hours, there isjust the weather coming our way. The next two hours, there is just the chance of getting an odd passing shower across the hills of southern scotland, because of england too. A cold run though, it frost developing across Northern Areas and was a medium to high cloud out west, could be quite a nice sunrise for some you tomorrow morning. This area of High Pressure, this area of low pressure not changing too much. They arejust shuffling position of bit which means the winds will start to shift more to a south westerly direction. But, there will be another day we have chilly winds around. For most of us, its going to be able right today was sunshine. We could see some of cloud coming across areas of scotla nd some of cloud coming across areas of scotland and there will be some and quite a lot of medium to high cloud and bright conditions up to the west rather than full on sunshine because of the winds will be strong particularly across the coast and hills of South West England and wales but actually breeze everywhere. The onshore winds keeping things a little bit cooler around the east coast of england and scotla nd around the east coast of england and scotland as well with temperatures just seven degrees in aberdeen. Away from the east coast, glasgow seeing a high of ii. From the east coast, glasgow seeing a high of 11. Free saturday night, many areas, they will keep clear skies but the winds will start to follow a little and that means its going to be a cold night for some of you with frost a little bit more widely away from the east coast whether we will continue to keep temperatures a few degrees above. Its only then, more in a dry weather and sunshine coming away but again, as the day whether cloud will va ry again, as the day whether cloud will vary from place to place. Ma will be that we see some figure cloud working into the scottish islands, threatening an odd light show about the most of us, it is a decent day with lighter winds. It should feel a little less on the chilly side with temperatures as high as 12 degrees. A new way of life in the uk, as the Prime Minister orders pubs and restaurants closed to try to prevent the spread of the disease
