There is a catch with this area but there is a catch with this area of High Pressure. As it becomes fully established and begins to drift towards scandinavia, the flow ofairaround drift towards scandinavia, the flow of air around that is coming in from the east. So that does mean a fairly chilly breeze. It does shunt a way that the system from southwest england and south wales on saturday, may be a bit of early rain still with us here. But a lot of fine weather, because it is High Pressure settling things down, with a chilly breeze, and already now temperatures are for the most part in single figures. And that is how we look going sunday into monday. High pressure generally in control, but look, the atlantic is trying to bring weather fronts back towards at least scotland and northern ireland, so least scotland and northern ireland, so there is a bit of a battle going on into the start of next week. Who will wind . The High Pressure settling the things down, the low pressure trying to turn things u nsettled. Pressure trying to turn things unsettled. But with milder air trying to come in as well. So that is the battle for next weeks weather. Looks like this weekend will be mainly dry. Havent seen
that happen on many weekends recently. But it will be quite chilly. Gardeners beware, frosty nights. Hello. This is bbc news with clive myrie. Well be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment first the headlines. The Prime Minister outlines drastic new measures to combat the spread of coronavirus. People are advised sweeping changes to their day to day lives. They are overwhelmingly worth it to slow the spread of the disease, to reduce the peak, to save life, minimise suffering and to give our nhs the chance to cope. Many of the uks city centres are virtually deserted this evening after advice to avoid all non essential contact and travel. Whole families will have to stay at home for iii days if one person shows symptoms. And, from this weekend, anyone with Underlying Health conditions should be shielded from social contact for three months. President trump says americans should prepare for the pandemic to continue until the end of summer. Here, communities are pulling together to help those most in need. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are Political Writer and academic, Maya Goodfellow and the deputy Political Editor of the spectator, katy balls. There is only one story in town of course, the coronavirus pandemic and what the government
here is now proposing we should be doing to prevent its here is now proposing we should be doing to prevent its spread. The latest advice from the government is urging people and to stay out of public places, as seen here on the front of the guardian. The telegraph says now its time to put life on hold as visits to the pub, restaurants and the theatre are called off. The i newspaper reiterates Boris Johnsons message saying people are being told to work from home where possible. The times headline reads britain in lockdown as an empty Waterloo Station in london shows the new status quo. The express front page is one of unity we can do it together as it lists johnsons new measures. The metro says its time to get anti social. And once again outlines the pms message earlier this afternoon. Meanwhile the Financial Times focusses on coronavirus effect on the global stock market as stocks crash and companies buckle under the pressure. Lets start guardian. The Prime Minister tells britain to stay in to stop the march of coronavirus. A warning as the epidemic nears a period of fast growth. We can see a photo here of people queueing to get into a supermarket. Panic buying. And hopefully not stockpiling which is what the government does not want you to do. The Prime Minister s message today is the first of a daily conference on the coronavirus and an escalation of what the government is asking the public to do, to work from home where they can, avoid unnecessary social contact, can, avoid unnecessary social co nta ct, to can, avoid unnecessary social contact, to stay away from pubs, it is worth pointing out that unlike in countries like italy else bain there is no legislation yet, and one of the things that have come up is that
while people are being told to not go to pubs and restaurants, they are not closing down pubs and restau ra nts not closing down pubs and restaurants which complicates insurance in terms of these businesses that in terms of that as well, the chancellor is expected to speak at the Daily Press Conference tomorrow so i think when he does that we will hear some new measures and it will be interesting to hear how far they go. France today was had a comprehensive package. 12 billion in the budget towards coronavirus and we will need quite a lot further if we look at how drastic it is for our normal way of life. With that insurance issue, has that played a role in the governments thinking in terms of not mandating that pubs and restau ra nts a nd bars not mandating that pubs and restaurants and bars and whatever should shut down, that it is still technically advice. Is that part of the issue . It is hard to say for
sure what the advice is. One of the things the Insurance Industry has said and you have heard from a numberof said and you have heard from a number of different people who will be impacted by the reduced football and people being told not to go to some of these places, there is a risk of collapse, some of them are Small Business. I have spoken to people who own a Small Business who are worried and what they have done in germany is issued unlimited loans to companies who may be affected. There are a few Different Things to think about here including the measures currently in place mean that people do not get healthcare they need. Something that liberty and many other groups today have joined a joint letter to priti patel to end immigration surcharge and do a Public Campaign to people who are migrants in this country that they can use migrants in this country that they can use the nhs. Ensure that the
messages sent out that Everyone Needs to be treated and what we need to remember is the way to deal with this is to ensure that no one is left behind financially or in healthcare. The telegraph, life put on hold. Again, advisory. We have seen, katie, Emmanuel Macron make it clear that there will be 100,000 police on the streets to enforce the lockdown that he has put in place over there, that there will be fines. We are being asked to sort of put life on hold here and one wonders why schools are still open, for instance. A few factors here. The news bulletin earlier you saw pictures of empty city centres and town centres. So even though it is advisory there is a sense that the public are paying attention. The Natural Inclination of the government is to hold off from making too many draconian measures at once because as they said today
at once because as they said today at this press conference it is a marathon and not a sprint. If you go all out, people are going to find it ha rd to all out, people are going to find it hard to maintain. Defence tried to distance themselves from the army getting involved but i would not rule out those measures. And on schools, this is a debate within countries. Some countries that have been successful at squashing the sombrero, as johnson would been successful at squashing the sombrero, asjohnson would say, have not closed schools. Some have but ultimately it comes down to an argument which is one of the risks if you close schools is that the uk government needs as many an h s workers as possible in hospital to deal with the burden. Many nhs workers have children and as soon as you do that, potentially, who do you ask to look after your children . Sending them to the grandparents could be the worst thing to do. One thing that has been discussed is the idea of having just the children of
public Service Employees and Public Sector employees go to schools but the idea that closing schools but the idea that closing schools is a simple measure is wrong. It may be that later they wait and they think it is the right thing but i dont think there is an easy solution. Is there a sense that the government is now beginning to feel that it can get on top of this, if it is possible for any government to do that . It is obviously an incredibly different difficult situation and we should not underestimate how difficult it to deal with this. Countries across the world have had different responses but it is worth looking at some of the countries that have gotten on top of this relatively well, not to downplay the death that has happened that places like south korea whether testing numbers were high. And compare that with a press conference earlier today, compare that with a press conference earlier today, from the World Health Organization where they were saying to test, test, test. If we are trying to map it and trying to
see what is working where and how, in about that level of testing and why it is that people in the uk are suffering symptoms but are not being tested, i think that is concerning and something i hope the government will look at again. In terms of schools, it is hard. There has been talk around whether key workers would still children to school but others wont but then you have people on zero hours contract, self employed, they need support. While we see in town centres emptying out, if you walk through london it is eerily quiet, for some people they still have to go to work because there is no Social Security support in our existing sick pay system and that is incredibly concerning. Something that is a concerning. Something that is a concern for parents will maybe end up concern for parents will maybe end up having their children sent home from school. The daily express. We can do it together. The Prime Minister urges the nation to go through the various measures that they have on the front page there. He is having this press conference daily now, and a sense perhaps leading up to today that they were not being quite as transparent as they should be and the way that a leader handles this kind of crisis has got to be transparent, doesnt it . Leucine the problems they have in america as a result of donald trump trying to lead the effort. Public Health Issues it is a different type of, a way of getting a information out. There was confusion over the weekend because there were bits of information in various places and it was not a unified message and particularly when you deal with serious issues such as the idea that over 70s could have to self isolate, you want transparency and people being told ina calm transparency and people being told in a calm manner. Last weeks press conferences we re in a calm manner. Last weeks press conferences were successful in doing that. The Daily Press ConferenceGoing Forward is trying to bring
back a sense of calm and to stop the panic. Hysteria and panic have wide side effects. Such as panic buying in supermarkets. Its files to a degree i think they are trying to avoid that. The daily express, we can do it together, the question is how long is the public going to be happy with the suggested measures. Right now people do want to give it a go. It may have to be enforced in the future but is it sustainable to have this in operation where people are working from home, not socialising for months on end . It may be that is where we are going but i think it will be really important for the government to want keep doing that and to keep the public on side. Especially as it could go on for months. Several months. The Financial Times and the economic fallout. Global stocks taking
a fresh pummelling. Interest rates are a fresh pummelling. Interest rates a re close a fresh pummelling. Interest rates are close to zero all over but it hasnt worked. That is the bottom line. Investors are just worried about what is happening. And there is such a level of uncertainty in terms of predicting what will happen in the next few weeks little in the next few months let alone the next few years. In some of the measures put in place around the world which are necessary, it seems, to protect people, the impact that has economically. But whenever we talk about the economy it is notjust macro figures it is micro. About the economy it is notjust macro figures it is micro. The impact on people and their livelihoods and their security and i think that looking around europe there have been certain things that have been done that maybe the government could also consider in terms of making sure there is pay all support for people who maybe would not have it otherwise. In italy they have suspended mortgage payments. Looking at some of these different options. They have
nationalised private hospitals in spain so thinking about both what we can do in terms of supporting people who are already vulnerable, those already unsecured a lot of people in society, not only the people you would think of that many people in terms of self employed people, people on zero hours but those who run their own business, this could hit ina run their own business, this could hit in a bad way and it make sure they are protect also i think that is important. This meeting you both for joining is important. This meeting you both forjoining us today. Many thanks to you both forjoining us today. Goodbye. Lets get more now on that address from Prime Minister earlier, where borisjohnson urged people to minimise social contact to try to halt the spread of the coronavirus. More than 1,500 cases
of the infection have been confirmed so far, and 55 people have died. Here is what the Prime Minister had to say as he laid out the uks new advice. Today, we need to go further, because according to sage, the Scientific Advisory committee on emergencies, it looks as though we are now approaching the fast growth pa rt are now approaching the fast growth part of the upward curve. And without drastic action, cases could double every five or six days. So first, we need to ask you to ensure that, if you or anyone in your household has one of those two symptoms, then you should stay at home for 1h days. That means that, if possible, you should not go out even to buy food or essentials,
other than for exercise, and in that case at a safe distance from others. If necessary, you should ask for help from others for your daily necessities, and if that is not possible, then you should do what you can to limit your social contact when you leave the house to get supplies. And even if you dont have symptoms, and if no one in your household has symptoms, there is more that we need you to do now. So second, now is the time for everyone to stop non essential contact with others, and to stop all unnecessary travel. We need people to start working from home where they possibly can, and you should avoid pubs, clubs, theatres and other such
social venues. It goes without saying, repeat the message, we should all only use the nhs when we really need to, and please go online rather than ringing nhs111. Really need to, and please go online rather than ringing nhs 111. Now, this advice about avoiding all unnecessary social contact is particularly important for people over 70, for pregnant women, and for those with Health Conditions, with some Health Conditions. And if you ask, well, why are we doing this now . Why now, why not earlier or later . Why bring in this very draconian measure . The answer is that we are asking people to do something that is difficult and disruptive of their lives, and the right moment, as we have always said, is to do it when it is most effective, when we think it can make the biggest difference to slowing the biggest difference to slowing the spread of the disease, reducing
the spread of the disease, reducing the number of victims, reducing the number of fatalities. And, as we ta ke number of fatalities. And, as we take these steps, we should be focusing on the most vulnerable. So third, ina focusing on the most vulnerable. So third, in a few days time, by this coming weekend, it will be necessary to go further and to ensure that those with the most serious Health Conditions are largely shielded from contact, from social contact, for around 12 weeks. And again, the reason for doing this in the next few days, rather than earlier or later, is that this is going to be very disruptive for people who have such conditions. Difficult for them, but i believe it is now necessary. And we want to ensure that this period of shielding, this period of maximum protection, coincides with the peak of the disease. And it is
now clear that the peak of the epidemic is coming faster in some parts of the country than in others, and it looks as though london is now and it looks as though london is now a few weeks ahead. So, to relieve the pressure on the London Health system, and to slow the spread in london, its important that london now pay special attention to what we are saying about avoiding non essential contact, and to take particularly seriously the advice about working from home and avoiding confined spaces such as pubs and restau ra nts. Confined spaces such as pubs and restaurants. Lastly, it remains true, as we have said in the last few weeks, that risks of transmission of the disease at Mass Gatherings such as sporting events are relatively low. But obviously, logically, as we advise against unnecessary social contact of all kinds, it is right that we should
extend that advice to Mass Gatherings as well. And so we have also got to ensure that we have the critical workers we need, that might otherwise be deployed at those gatherings, to deal with this emergency. So from tomorrow, we will no longer be supporting Mass Gatherings with emergency workers in the way that we normally do. So Mass Gatherings, we are now moving emphatically away from. And i know that many people, including millions of fit and active people over 70, mayfield, listening what i have just said, that there is something excessive about these measures. But i have to say, i believe they are overwhelmingly worth it, to slow the spread of the disease, to reduce the
peak, to save life, minimise suffering, and to give our nhs the chance to cope. Over the last few days, i have been comparing notes and talking to leaders around the world, and i can tell you that the uk is now leading a growing Global Campaign amongst all our friends and allies, whether in the g7, the g20, the un, the imf, all those bodies in which we play a significant role. We are leaving a campaign to fight back against this disease, to keep the economy growing , against this disease, to keep the economy growing, to make sure that humanity has access to the drugs and the treatments that we all need, and the treatments that we all need, and the uk is also at the front of the effort to back business, to back our economy, to make sure that we get through it. I know that we are today asking a lot of everybody. This is far more now than just washing your
hands, though clearly washing your hands, though clearly washing your hands remains important. But i can tell you that, across this country, people and businesses, in my experience, are responding with Amazing Energy and creativity to the challenge that we face, and i want to thank everybody for the part that you are playing and that you are going to play. Good evening. Im jane dougall with your latest sports news. More sporting events have been cancelled, postponed or suspended following the government briefing and recommedations in the light of the coronavirus pandemic. In the last couple of hours, aintree racecourse has announced that the grand national, due to take place in april, has been cancelled. An estimated £150 million is bet on the race, which attracts a worldwide audience of around 500 million people. Tiger roll had been looking for a third consecutive victory. To rugby union, and the premiership
in england has been suspended for five weeks because of the pandemic. This will include four scheduled rounds of matches, with games due to resume on the weekend of 24 26 april. The quarter finals of the european champions cup and challenge cup, scheduled for earlier in the month, have also been postponed. Also suspended is rugby leagues super league until 3 april, with a fear among many that some clubs could go out of business. The suspension applies to the mens, womens and community game. Rugby leagues chief commercial officer, mark foster, has said any cut to the money super league is paid could threaten clubs, and that communication between clubs and the government was essential to avoid this. I think we need to get talking with them, we need to keep talking with others who might be able to help us get through the next weeks and months. Communication is the key
pa rt months. Communication is the key part of all of this. As we have started over the last couple of weeks with all of our contingency planning, all of our communications to clubs, to government and to all those involved in this sport and have an application. Those clubs that we talk about are really important part of their local community. They do such a greatjob on those local communities, and its so important that that job continues for many more years. This years oxford and cambridge boat race has also been cancelled. It was due to take place on the thames on 29 march. The traditional event has been taking place since 1829, but in a statement, the organisers said their concern was with the health of crew, spectators and staff, and that their thoughts were with the athletes who had worked so hard and made immense sacrifices. Following the impact of the coronavirus, decisions on what will happen to the Champions League and the european championships will be taken at an emergency meeting held by uefa tomorrow. The Italian Football Federation are among those calling for euro 2020 to be postponed to allow League Seasons to be completed. The first match of the tournament is supposed to be in rome on 12 june. Our football reporter simon stone explains. Apart from five countries, all 55 uefa nations didnt play foot ball at the weekends. There is no realistic possibility of any of them restarting, and how do you finish these seasons . And the only way, realistically, that these seasons are going to come to a conclusion is by creating space, and the only way of creating space is to get rid of the euros from the calendar. The olympic european boxing qualifying event in london, which started on saturday and went behind closed doors on sunday, has now been suspended following tonights session. Galal yafai has become the first british boxer to secure his place for the tokyo games, after beating russias rasul saliev on a unanimous points decision. Peter mcgrail has also booked his place in tokyo
after he beat czech republics kevin godla by a unanimous decision in the featherweight class. The big question now is when the rest of the olympic qualification bouts can take place. There are more details on the bbc sport website, but thats it for sport website, but thats it for now. Goodbye. Hello. The week started gloriously across the greater part of england and wales, with clear blue skies. It wasnt that way further north, however, because across scotland, northern ireland, there was much more in the way of cloud than this. Thanks to that weather front, which way of cloud than this. Thanks to that weatherfront, which is way of cloud than this. Thanks to that weather front, which is going to gradually push its way, or try to, a little bit further south. But you will notice the more westerly portion wants to come back further towards the north. Which has implications for northern ireland. After a dry enough start, i think the rain will soon be in during the course of the morning, then onto the greater part of mainland scotland, into the north of england as well. Further south, a much cloudier day across much of england and wales. Moisture laden south westerly is
pushing a lot of cloud to the welsh mountains and the moors of the south west, the odd spot of rain here. But those winds get drier as the cloud breaks to the eastern side of england. 13, 1a or 15 could well be yours. Having been such a feature across northern and western parts of written on tuesday, that front then becomes the weather feature for the southern half of britain as we get on into wednesday. It gradually eases its way a little bit further south. Maybe the isobarsjust tightening up a touch here near that weather fronts, but nowhere tightening up a touch here near that weatherfronts, but nowhere near as much as they are going to tighten up later in the day across the north of scotland. Gale of wind here, gusto 50, 60 mph. Scotland. Gale of wind here, gusto 50,60 mph. Afairamount of cloud in the south. The south. The odd bit and piece of rain. Northern england, northern scotland, dry for the most part. May a passing shower, certainly so for the northern isles, closer to the low centre and much closer to the low centre and much closer to the low centre and much closer to some very strong winds as well. Come thursday, the remnants of that weather front just dribbling their way ever further towards the south. So a band of cloud, not much
more than that. Maybe some rain into the far south western quarter. Having had 13, 1a or 15 again on wednesday on the south, look at that. Thats going to be a bit of a shock. Eight or nine degrees only. Despite the sunshine further north, and pretty much dry, you are going to be stuck at eight or nine as well. Thursday into friday, perhaps a little bit more about that front through the channel, and certainly more isobars. So it is windy, there is an easterly, there is some cloud and rain as well, so it could be one of those days. But for many parts of the british isles, it is bright, it is dry, it is cool, and the temperature is rocksolid for the most part, in single figures. Take care
