Mid week it buckles north turning things wet and windy but at the end of the week back to square but at the end of the week back to square one, but at the end of the week back to square one, sitting in the chillier air with square one, sitting in the chillier airwitha square one, sitting in the chillier air with a showery north westerly weather regime. For the following week, still chilly with temperatures a couple of degrees below average. Many of us should see some distance both of sunshine but there will be showers in the air will be cold enough for them to be wintry across high ground and then through the middle of the week, windy spell of weather. Not named storm type weather. Not named storm type weather but the windiest of the five days of the week ahead and probably the wettest as well. In the short term it is that wintry weather for a bring our focus to as we had through tonight and particularly for thursday morning rush hour across england and wales. Hello. This is bbc news with julian worricker. Well be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment. First, the headlines the government sets out its response as coronavirus speads across europe. For the first time, more new cases are recorded outside china than within. We have a clear 4 part plan to respond to the outbreak of this disease contain, delay, research and mitigate. Were taking all necessary measures to minimise the risk to the public. Flood water threatens to overwhelm defences in shropshire as emergency evacuations take place in towns along the river severn. Fleeing their homes families in the indian capital delhi terrified at the outbreak of hindu muslim violence which has left 27 dead. There have been multiple fatalities in a shooting in the us city of milwaukee at the premises of the brewing giant molson coors. The home secretary warns Police Chiefs there must be no excuses hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are caroline wheeler, the deputy Political Editor for the sunday times, and susie boniface, whos a columnist at the daily mirror. A look the front pages for you first of all. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in and its perhaps no surprise that the news of the coronavirus dominates most of the front pages. Lets ta ke lets take you through them. The mail leads with the news the nhs is braced for what they call virus mayhem. The paper says that Health Chiefs have said everyone must wash their hands every 20 seconds. The i says that the coronavirus is now growing faster outside of china then within in the country. The headline i mentioned a moment ago. The guardian says the race to halt the coronavirus outbreak continues as the public is warned against mass panic. The Daily Telegraph continues that theme. It says that schools and offices have been urged not to panic as coronavirus fears continue to grow. The independent says that in the event of a coronavirus pandemic, senior doctors will be required to deny care to the weakest patients and decide who would get the life saving treatment. Lifesaving. The times goes with a different story as their lead say that universities are set to withhold offers for places till after a level results are published. Their lead, saying that. Whilst the mirror critices the Prime Minister, saying that whilst the nation is hit by two National Crises whilst Boris Johnson found time to attend a party. Lets dip into some of those at least until we hear a little bit more activity from the white house. To the mirror front page, ijust mentioned it, get a grip you drip, susie, your paper is going with, not a renowned fan of borisjohnson, and going at him today. It is worth bearing a in mind amid all the newspaper saying do and dont panic about coronavirus, more people have died in this country from the floods than the coronavirus, because no one has died from the coronavirus, and your farm has died from the coronavirus, and yourfarm or has died from the coronavirus, and your farm or likely to has died from the coronavirus, and yourfarm or likely to be has died from the coronavirus, and your farm or likely to be affected by and notice the floods than the coronavirus if it got into this country and into sustained transmission your far country and into sustained transmission yourfar more. Had you had the same number of people had died from the coronavirus, you can be guaranteed the Prime Minister would be out there in his hazmat suit going around hospital corridors
for a photo op looking like hes doing something about the coronavirus, but when theres people in floods, hes demonstrably avoided going to places that require him to put on wellington boots because he went once to fishlake and got told off and hes not gone to any of these places ever since because he doesnt think its worth it anymore, in power the next five years. Whats your take on this . A classic crisis, what crisis front page. The fact is there is a picture of the Prime Minister at the Black And White ball la st minister at the Black And White ball last night and the suggestion is hes getting on with things while suffering is happening both within the floods and people fearing whats happening with the coronavirus. Whats interesting about the floods is lots of them are taking place in those red wall type areas that were previously labour that now voted conservative and hes not seeming to address this. Of course one of the criticisms levelled at Boris Johnson quite frequently since he became Prime Minister is when theres a
crisis, even if you remember the diplomatic crisis fairly early on in his ten year, he was nowhere to be seen. In fact, todays appearance at pmqs was the first time hed been seenin pmqs was the first time hed been seen in public for about ten days and he certainly wasnt talking about it tenure. Thats what the mirror is basically suggesting, the Prime Minister is basically absent without leave during a period which is quite. Heres the thing, he wont be the first Prime Minister to be criticised for this, indeed he isnt, and there always two sides to this. Some say he should go and be seen this. Some say he should go and be seen to be doing the thing that will airthe seen to be doing the thing that will air the concerns lots of people have, and if he is seen there helps those affected. Others say if the Prime Minister goes, it gets in the way and the press all trace after him and it doesnt actually change the situation on the ground chase. You always get told off by someone when you turn up to a crisis,
however, with theresa may and her failure to go onto grenfell prove, if you dont attend and dont show your taking responsibility, and it isa your taking responsibility, and it is a show, theyre not helping anyone bailout, if you turn up and show your taking responsibility and listening and noting, then it is beneficial to the way you look and the way your administration runs. When he went to fishlake as a journalist, he looked to me. Youre told how you make small talk with people and how you get them to open up, and when he was a journalist, apart from being terrible, hes the sort that never left the office and provably repeatedly lied so not that allegedly, he didnt speak to normal human beings because he was there at fishlake with his hands in his pockets and asking how things were going. He had no ways of bringing someone going. He had no ways of bringing someone out and asking how they were doing and empathising with them and standing with open body language to invite them to do it. Not his
natural skill. Im about to take you elsewhere and im about to take you elsewhere and im going to do it now. Lets go to the white house. President trump is speaking about coronavirus. Lets listen in. By bythe by the coronavirus and hit pretty ha rd. We by the coronavirus and hit pretty hard. We did it very early. A lot of people thought we shouldnt have done it that early but we did and it turned out to be a good thing. The number one priority from oui thing. The number one priority from our standpoint is the health and safety of the American People, and thats the way i viewed it when i made that decision. Because of all weve done, the risk to the American People remains very low. We have the greatest experts in the world, really in the world, right here. The people called upon by other countries when things like this happen. We are ready to adapt and were to do what we have to as the disease spreads, if it spreads, and as most of you know, the level that weve
had in our country is very low and those people are Getting Better. Orwe think in those people are Getting Better. Or we think in almost all cases theyre Getting Better. We have a total of 15. We took in some from japan, you heard about that, because their american citizens and their in quarantine, and they re their american citizens and their in quarantine, and theyre Getting Better too. We thought we had an obligation to do that. It could have been as many as a2. We found that it was just been as many as a2. We found that it wasjust an been as many as a2. We found that it was just an obligation we felt that we had. We could have left them and that would have been very bad. Very bad, i think, that would have been very bad. Very bad, ithink, american that would have been very bad. Very bad, i think, American People. That would have been very bad. Very bad, ithink, American People. Their recovering. Of the 15 people, the original 15, as i call them, eight of them have returned to their homes, to stay in their homes until fully recovered. One is in the hospital and five have fully
recovered. One is, we think, in pretty good shape. In between hospital and going home. We have a total of 15 people and their innate process of recovering with some already having fully recovered in already having fully recovered in a process. We started out by looking at certain things. Weve been working with the held very carefully, very strongly, and i think we have very good bipartisan spirit for money hill. We asked for 2. 5 billion, and we thing thats a lot. And the democrats and senator schumer wants us to have more than that we think. Normally id say wed take it. If they want to do more, well do more. We are going to spend whatevers appropriate. Hopefully we dont have to spend too much because weve done
a good job keeping it down to a minimum. Again, weve had tremendous success beyond what people would have thought. At the same time, you do have some outbreaks in some countries. Italy and various countries. Italy and various countries are having some difficulty. China, you know about, where it started. I spoke with president xi, we had a great talk. He is working very hard, i have to say, hes working very, very hard. If you can count on the reports coming out of china, that spread has come down quite a bit. The infection seems to have gone down over the last two days as opposed to getting larger. Its actually gotten smaller. In one incidence where we think it is somewhat reliable, it seems to have gotten quite a bit smaller. With respect to the money thats being negotiated, they can do whatever they want. We are
requesting 2. 5 billion. Some republicans would like us to get four and some democrats would like us four and some democrats would like us to get 8. 5, and well be satisfied whatever it is. Were bringing ina satisfied whatever it is. Were bringing in a specialist, highly regarded specialist, tomorrow. Works at the state department. Very, very tremendously talented in doing this. I want you to understand something that shocked me when i saw. When i spoke with doctor fauchy on this and i was really amazed, and most people we re i was really amazed, and most people were amazed to hear it, that the flu in our country kills from 25,000 people to 69,000 people a year. That was shocking to me. So far, if you look at what we have with the 15 people, and their recovery, one is pretty sick, but hopefully will recover, but the others are in great
shape. Think of that, 25,000 to 69,000. Over the last ten years, weve lost 360,000. These are people that have died from what we call the flu. A, did you get your flu shot . Thats something hey, did you get yourflu shot . Weve stopped non american citizens coming in from china, that was done early on. Weve been screening people at a high level coming into the country from infected areas. We have been quara ntining the country from infected areas. We have been quarantining those infected and those at risk. We have a lot of great quarantine facilities. We are rapidly developing a vaccine and the professionals can speak to you about that. The vaccine is coming along well and when speaking to the doctors, we think this is something we can develop fairly rapidly, this vaccine, for the future. And in
collaboration with support from our partners, we have great relationships with all of the countries where talking about. A fairly large number of countries. In some, its one person, and many countries have no problem whatsoever. Well see what happens. But we are very, very ready for this, for anything, whether its going to be a breakout of larger proportions or whether or not, you know, we are at that very low level, and we want to keep it that way. So we are at the low level and as they get better we take them off the list, so were going to be pretty soon list, so were going to be pretty soon at only five people and we could be at just soon at only five people and we could be atjust one or two people over the next short period of time. So weve had very good luck. The johns hopkins, i guess, is highly respected, great place. They did a study, comprehensive. The countries
best and worst prepared for an epidemic in the United States is rated number one for being prepared. This is a list of different countries. I dont want to get in your way. You do such a good job. This is a list of the different countries. The United States is rated number one most prepared. United kingdom, netherlands, australia, canada, thailand, sweden, denmark, south korea, finland. This isa denmark, south korea, finland. This is a list of the best rated countries in the world byjohns hopkins. Hes been terrific in many ways, doctor fauci, but hes also very good on healthcare and we followed him closely, a lot of states do, when mike p was governor of indiana, they established great healthcare, a system that a lot of the other states have really looked
to and change their systems stop they want to base it on the indiana system, its very good their systems and. They want to base it on the indiana system, its very good their systems and. I want to announce that right now i will be putting mike pence in charge and he will work with professionals and he will work with professionals and doctors and everyone else who is working. I have spent a lot of time with the team over the last few weeks. They are totally brilliant and we are doing really well and mike will be in charge and he will report back to me but it does have a talent for this and i will ask him to say a few words. Thank you, mist president. President trump has made clear from the first days of this administration we have no higher priority than the Safety Security hills and well being priority than the Safety Security hills and well being of the American People. And from the first word of
the outbreak of the coronavirus, we took unprecedented steps to protect the American People from the spread of this disease. We recounted those briefly but the establishment of travel restrictions, aggressive quarantine effort of americans returning and establishing the White House Corona Task force, these are reflective of the urgency that the president has brought to a whole of government approach. As a former governor from the state where the first murders case emerged in first murders case emerged in first mers case emerged in 2014, i know the importance of president ial leadership and the importance of Administration Leadership and the vital role of partnerships of state and local governments and Health Authorities in responding to potential threat of dangerous
infections, diseases and i look forward , infections, diseases and i look forward, mr president , to serving in this role and bringing together all members of the Corona Task Force that you have established. Hss, cdc, dhs, the department of transportation and state. This team has been at your direction, mr president , meeting every day since it was established. My role will be to continue to bring the team together, to bring to the president the best options for action to see to the safety and well being and health of the American People. I will also be continuing to reach out to governors, state and local officials, in fact in the recent days the white house met with over 40 state, county and City Health Officials from over 30 states and territories to discuss how to respond to the potential threat of the coronavirus. We will be working
with them in renewed ways to make sure they have the resources to be able to respond and is the president said we will be adding additional personnel here at the white house to support our efforts on the behalf of the president. We will work with members of congress to ensure resources are available for this whole of government response and we will be working very closely with secretary azhar and their team who have done an outstanding job communicating to the public to make sure that the American People have the best information on ways to protect themselves and their families and that the public has the most timely information on the potential threat to the American People. Mr president , as we have been briefed, while the threat to the American Public remains low, the spread of the coronavirus, you have directed this team to take all steps necessary to continue to ensure the health and well being necessary to continue to ensure the
health and well being of the American People and the people of this country can be confident that underyour this country can be confident that under your leadership, we will continue to bring the full resources of the federal government in Co Ordination with our state and local partners, to see to the health and well being and local partners, to see to the health and well being and to the local partners, to see to the health and well being and to the Effective Response to the coronavirus here in the United States of america. With that, the president has asked me to recognise that the secretary of health and Human Services and the Deputy Director of the cdc for remarks. Thank you, mr Vice President and thank you mr president for gathering your Public Health experts here today and for your strong leadership in keeping america safe and i just strong leadership in keeping america safe and ijust want to say i could not be more delighted that you have asked the Vice President , my old friend and colleague, to lead this whole of government approach with us. Whole of government approach with us. We will take you away from that because that has given you the view
of the president and Vice President as to the state of play in the United States as to how they will tackle the coronavirus. We have one minute left to take us briefly, maybe, through the daily mail. How does it tell the story. Itjust up updates us on the steps taken in this country to try and limit the impact of this illness that has come m, impact of this illness that has come in, so faronly 13 impact of this illness that has come in, so far only 13 cases of it. What they say is that patients will be tested in their own homes so we do not start spreading it in hospital and they will more investment into the helplines and the workers there so the helplines and the workers there so people can ring and check the symptoms. There will be Public Information campaigns that will tell us we information campaigns that will tell us we should wash our hands for 20 seconds. Initially we thought it was every 20 seconds but, no, for 20 seconds. And that is going to try and limit the spread of this disease as well. This is all based on the fa ct as well. This is all based on the fact that there is now concern about
the spread of this because it has slowed down in china but we are more cases outside china than within and thatis cases outside china than within and that is why this is now a big front page story. That is why this is now a big frontpage story. The word mayhem must be worrying you, susie . Racing form mayhem is correct but the mayhem we face is not the deadly coronavirus which probably is not going to kill any or very many people in the uk if it ever gets here in extensive numbers. The mayhem would be people presenting to a doctor when they are not particularly ill and stopping people who are ill getting to the doctor. So dont panic. As this lady on the front of the mail is doing here, keep calm and carry on sunbathing. Even in tenerife. On that note, thank you very much. Thats it for the papers tonight. Dont forget you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. Its all there for you seven days a week at bbc. Co. Uk papers.
