The wind iiulei var ltltur itsn we will see the wind starting to pick up. That means there wont be so pick up. That means there wont be so much fog on friday morning, a better chance of breaking up the cloud and seeing some sunshine. Late in the day we was this i was given to Western Areas where it will also start to turn milder. A band of rain will move the run friday night, should be clear by saturday. So we start the weekend in decent shape but here comes a band of heavy rain from the west. As we go through the day, with that we was the increasingly strong winds. Through saturday evening there is likely to bea saturday evening there is likely to be a swathe of gales in north and Western Areas but pushing eastwards throughout the night. And that is just the start of it. What we have over the usa at the moment is an area of very stormy weather, rain and snow here. Now, that is going to be picked up by a powerfuljet stream. We are expecting wind speeds in thejet stream. We are expecting wind speeds in the jet stream, higher the atmosphere, to reach 270 miles an hour, supercharging the atmosphere, denting that lump of unsettled
weather in our direction and spinning up what looks like on our weather charts, and exceptionality and exceptionality deep area of low pressure. Very heavy bursts of rain pushing over the uk, exceptionally strong winds, severe gales could show up just about anywhere across the uk. Still some uncertainty about where the very strongest winds could be, but we could have gusts of 70 80 miles an hour or more. Yes, it will be mild but i dont think the temperatures will be the most notable part of the day, the winds will be. Storm shower oi moves day, the winds will be. Storm shower or moves in, damaging winds across parts of the uk. It is worth following the forecasts. Monday will be another windy day, showers coming in our direction even over a fairly
modest heels could be seeing snow even modest heels. Still strong winds blowing in from the atlantic, the translator next week for another deep area of low pressure, uncertainty about exactly when that might show up. What it means next week as it is going to stay very windy, potentially it could be stormy again for a time. There will be spells of rain and snow particularly in the north. This calm before the storm wont last long. This hello, this is bbc news with rachel schofield. Well be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment. First the headlines. Donald john trump, president of the united states, is not guilty as charged in the second article of impeachment. Not guilty President Trump is acquitted by the senate of all charges at his impeachment trial. The white house calls it a full vindication and exoneration. President trump releases this tweet tonight, and says he will make a Public Statement tomorrow. In other news, millions of people are placed under travel restrictions in china
as beijing steps up its efforts to contain the coronavirus as the death toll rises to more than 500. Here, the government launches an eight week consultation over whether failing to pay your tv licence should be treated as a criminal offence. And, one person has died and more than 150 are injured after a plane skids off the runway at an airport in istanbul, breaking into three sections. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are political commentator and former conservative party press chief, Giles Kenningham, and Political Writer and academic, maya goodfellow. Many of tomorrows front pages are already in. Not guilty trump bounces back
thats the telegraphs take after President Trump was acquitted of both articles of impeachment by the us senate. Trump off the hook in bold red letters covers the front of the metro. President trump also appears on the front of the guardian, after the votes to acquit him ended the threat that the he could be removed from office. A new personalised Cancer Treatment that could slash the mortality rate of the worlds second biggest killer is one of a handful of stories on the front of the financial times. The times also carry the story saying the new treatment could detect the disease years before it develops. The fugitive still behind the wheel is how the daily mail title their exclusive on tomorrows front page. The paper track down Anne Sacoolas six months after she fled britain, following the fatal crash that killed the teenager, harry dunn. Unionjoke
is the headline dominating the front of the sun. They say town halls have been ordered by the government to raise the unionjack in honour of scandal hit Prince Andrews birthday. A little bit of royals, politics and science but we must start with donald trump. The Daily Telegraph with a picture of him looking very relaxed. Not guilty. Obviously a major story but in a lot of ways not a surprising outcome. Just to remind people, essentially what has happened, donald trump was accused of trying to cheat into the impending us election happening later this year by trying to get ukraine to investigatejoe biden through his son, one of the president ial candidates. Potential president ial candidates. Potential president ial candidate. Joe biden is
not doing so well in iowa right now. Essentially, donald trump has been acquitted on two counts. One of trying to abuse power and one of trying to abuse power and one of trying to abuse power and one of trying to obstruct Congress Stop this is not surprising. You need a two thirds majority in the senate for this to be successful and while still trying to spend at this, the democrats will have a battle on their hand to wrestle that narrative away from him. One republican, mitt romney actually voted with the democrats and he is the first senator in history to vote against his own party when it has come to an impeachment like this and what that meant, donald trump wanted this narrative of all being united. M is only one person. I did not say it was more than one person but in terms of the narrative, i think it will be a tough ride for the
democrats, but this was anticipated. In terms of effecting the us election, it is not a given. Anticipated it was going to happen. Huge miscalculation by the democrats. They have wasted loads of out democrats. They have wasted loads of ourtime when democrats. They have wasted loads of our time when they could have been highlighting the candidates. Did it have no impact on donald trump . It is an establishment challenge and there is nothing to see here is what trump will say. The democrats will be having meltdowns about farces in aor. The benefit of being in office, whoever democratic candidate is they have to get airtime but in the meantime they do not have that but also democrats have not been Holding Donald trump to account on policy and the way i look at it at the moment, donald trump is going to win
next time. The economy is doing well. Democrats are lurching towards the hard left. I think. You think they will go Bernie Sanders . But he has failed before so why will he fell again. Hillary clinton actually failed. She also won the popular vote. I do not accept the narrative here. I know we want to do that often, across the atlantic. What the democrats have to do is a television for the country Bernie Sanders has that. He is gaining a lot of support in the grassroots and that will be key in what hes saying. Whoever is successful terms of the nomination is getting people out to vote who did not vote last
time. Massive. I do not think it is all sealed off for trump and in the bag. Lets move on in a friendly fashion. The independent talking about coronavirus and saying they have an exclusive about the way the response is being planned in nhs hospitals in england. Response is being planned in nhs hospitals in englandlj response is being planned in nhs hospitals in england. I think it is sensible. The media has a responsibility not to scaremongering. The independent is treading a thin line here. Essentially it is saying all hospitals have been ordered to create secure zones hospitals have been ordered to create secure zones for hospitals have been ordered to create secure zones for the virus. This has been a huge Global Health academic and it has a claimed over 500 lives and 25,000 people affected. Lets have a bit of come and balance on how we report this. Calm. And balance on how we report this. Calm. I think right now it seems all the preparations have been put in place and people are pretty informed about this. There has been a lot of courage about this. Some less helpful than others but people have been informed about what has happened and it is worth knowing the way china has dealt with it has been effective and good and the information relayed from china where this all began and so people are informed as much as a can be and i would also say not to get into panic, chaotic state over this. Seems the nhs is prepared for this and that is all we need. A royal segment or two i will take you into. A suggestion that swap duke for killer driver. This is about Prince Andrew and Anne Sacoolas. What is
the suggestion . Harry dunns family wa nt the suggestion . Harry dunns family want justice, understandably so the suggestion . Harry dunns family wantjustice, understandably so in what is an absolutely horrendous case. He was allegedly killed by Anne Sacoolas who is now back in the us. A suggestion that swapping her for Prince Andrew who they were allegations against him being tied up allegations against him being tied up to the jeffrey allegations against him being tied up to thejeffrey epstein case. Even the spokesperson for harry dunns family said there is not going to be a swap because Prince Andrew is not facing any charges. Whether he will be facing any charges is not clear. There is no suggestion of charges for Prince Andrew but that he may have information. This is a story which is haunting him and will not go away. It is doing record damage to the royal family. They are in the
midst of facing their own existential crisis. In the sun, union a joke, the fact that the seems to be pushed about Prince Andrews birthday. Townhall is a been ordered by the government to fly the union jack to mark been ordered by the government to fly the unionjack to mark his been ordered by the government to fly the union jack to mark his 60th birthday. A lot of kickback on that. Lets be frank, andrew is not one of the most popular royals. Harry and william are the flag bearers, they relate to young people and drag the royal family into the 21st century. Now harry has stepped down. The wider point is how they make themselves relevant to the population today and they went through this kind of crisis in the 19905, through this kind of crisis in the 1990s, Prince Charles seemed to have pulled himself out of it. It seems to be going back there again. It could be a big problem if they do not address it. Labour mp saying the
idea of raising the flag for Prince Andrew would be wholly inappropriate. I agree. Andrew would be wholly inappropriate. Iagree. I andrew would be wholly inappropriate. I agree. Ithink andrew would be wholly inappropriate. I agree. I think it isa inappropriate. I agree. I think it is a strange decision if this is what has happened. I think hes incredibly unpopular. In a minority in the country i realise, but when we talk about the royal family i feel like i am in a different universe. You are not really interested. I am not massively interested. I am not massively interested but i can understand why people would be unhappy with the suggestion that this should happen. Iimagine the suggestion that this should happen. I imagine the protocol. I imagine a lot of the town halls would not wa nt to a lot of the town halls would not want to do that. I doubt it will come down to the wire and are dictated from on high. The daily mirror in contrast what could be construed as a positive story, royal
secret revealed. This is all about the queen. I did not know anything about this until i read the story. This is really about a gunman who was wrestled by this man, ronnie russell, because it was princes and in the firing line and because of this queen paid for his house as a gift. It is conveniently, for the royal family a good piece of news for them when they have been so many negative stories. With what has happened with Meghan Markle and prince harry and this Prince Andrew story and the horrendous interview and this is a piece of good news for them. You speak to people from different generations. The queen is held in high regard, as she is phenomenal and has held the family through many crises. When she slips down, or whatever happens, people ask. And a fascinating story, a shame we dont have time to go to page six and seven, but a good tail to be told. Giles, lets talk science. They are highlighting this cancer code, saying it offers hope of treatment several decades earlier. Cancer is the second biggest killer, before heart disease. This is saying a landmark study could identify genetic markers behind the disease and stop people from dying because
of earlier detection. This could be a massive breakthrough. It seems like a much more personalised approach to cancer, getting a better treatment for your cancer and the way your body is going to respond. Its about mapping the genetics of how different forms of cancer can affect our genes. So hopefully diagnostic test cards different forms of cancer earlier. And as well as the outcomes in this story, which i really like about this and is highlighted in the times, it involved around 1300 researchers, which is a huge number of people working on this, but also across the seven countries. I really think alike, thinking about the International Collaboration involved in this kind of thing, we often get caught up in thinking about borders and not having this collaboration for Cross Country is, actually for things like science and the climate crisis, that sort of collaboration is the future and is going to be
really, really important. As well as this story being a positive one, hopefully in terms of catching cancer earlier on, also about how it was achieved in terms of Scientific Collaboration is worth noting. Lets look at the telegraph again, giles. This is not their main story but we wa nted this is not their main story but we wanted to talk about the Anti Terrorist sentencing laws. Race against time, they save for they say for introducing Anti Terrorist sentencing laws. Thats before february 28. Its basically being put through to halt the automatic release of terrorists. We had that incident over the weekend. Sources are saying there is one so is due for Early Release at the end of this month. It was a shopkeeperjailed for 11. 5 years month. It was a shopkeeperjailed for4. 5 years in month. It was a shopkeeperjailed for 11. 5 years in may for encouraging terrorism. Of course this guy who was shot and killed on the weekend,
he was out on automatic release and there was this curious situation where the Security Services were watching him, they knew he was a threat, yet he was allowed out of prison even though we knew this. There was a sort of renewed push by the government to clamp down on theirs. Sadly, this feels like all do much of a horrible reality we keep coming back to clamp down on this. Its going to change the way people can come out halfway through their sentence. It depends on how serious it is. Ive seen a Human Rights Organisations talking about the importance of the radicalisation programmes in prison and what is actually happening in our prison syste m actually happening in our prison system to ensure people, when they are released at whatever time is now that is, there has been the work done with them in a productive way to ensure the radicalisation is done effectively. We should take one other story from the daily
telegraph, its tucked away but its about the bbc. We have been talking about the bbc. We have been talking about the bbc. We have been talking about the future of the bbc. Younger listeners are turning into radio three, getting a taste for Classical Music. I dont thinki can three, getting a taste for Classical Music. I dont think i can classify myself as young anymore, but i might try. It makes me want to listen to some more Classical Music. The flagship youth radio station, radio one, which i do listen to some time, has seen a fall in the same period. So maybe its about people getting into more Classical Music at a younger age . What do you make of it . Bowling away from radio one . Younger age . What do you make of it . Bowling away from radio one . |j younger age . What do you make of it . Bowling away from radio one . I think it is about the change in media habits. Tv is fracturing, netflix disrupting the market, peoples patterns are changing dramatically. I think old patterns and old habits
are fading away. Itself feeding into this wider debate about we have been talking about it today, the bbc, should people still basic women a judge if they dont pay their tv licence . All of this is up for debate. It is up for debate, and thinking about how the bbc functions, thats great. If we are going to talk about changing markets, what people are watching and engaging with, but i mean, im not saying thisjust and engaging with, but i mean, im not saying this just because and engaging with, but i mean, im not saying thisjust because im on the bbc, its a great public service. I engage with a lot of bbc content so there still is a place for it, i think. Itsjust about how people are engaging with that, how and why, thats what we should talk about. Do you have a license . I think its rigoni and how they go after people who dont pay the license. There was a quote from someone on license. There was a quote from someone on the bbc earlier saying actually five people went to prison last year, the idea they are out there taking people door to door, i dont know. I moved to somewhere new
andi dont know. I moved to somewhere new and i had them budging me when i hadnt paid it. It was very aggressive. I know people need to abide by the law but obviously there isa abide by the law but obviously there is a trade off with these beings. Where are the government . Where are the police focusing their resources . I think it has to be proportionate. I think it has to be proportionate. I think there was a sense that it has become out of proportion. |j has become out of proportion. dont have the statistics on hand but i have seen reporting on the numberof but i have seen reporting on the number of people who have gone to prison for not paying council tax. This is people in poverty. If you compare that to the bbc license fee, then maybe we could see whether that is to draconian and whether or not thatis is to draconian and whether or not that is the case. I think about, as they say, people are in poverty not able to pay council tax is going to prison for that, the amount of reporting on that is quite small in comparison to this big focus on the governments bbc licence fee. Well, an eight week licence fee
consultation, people will have their say on that. I want to bring you some sad news before we go. We have just heard kirk douglas, one of the last surviving stars of hollywoods golden age has died at the ripe old age of 103. Best known for his roles in spartacus and lust for life. He was nominated for three Academy Awards in an acting career that spanned six decades. His death was confirmed by his son, michael douglas, who said he is father was a legend and an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years. Just wanted to bring you that news was that we will have more on that during news day at midnight a big thank you to Giles Kenningham and maya goodfellow, and all of you for watching. Thank you, good night. Good evening, katie shanahan. Heres your latest sports news the final fa cup fourth round replay is done and dusted and what a match it was at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Spurs went ahead against southampton, then went behind, before finally rallying to win 3 2 in the 87th minute. Imran sidat watched the drama unfold. We may only be in february, but this was already the third meeting between these two sides this year. Both managers wont happy about giving up some of their winter break for this replay, but jose giving up some of their winter break for this replay, butjose mourinho soon for this replay, butjose mourinho soon had reason to cheer. Southampton had the chance to hit back immediately, but the inform danny innes was denied by the woodwork. The chances kept coming and says where a certain level as
shandong took advantage of poor defending. They took the momentum into the second half and when innes got a second chance, he wasnt denied. Putting southampton ahead. That seemed to force hotspur is into action as lucas moura and pulled them level. Could they now sense a winner . Well, moments later, sons young meeting was through, down he went, penalty he dusted himself down and made no mistake to set up a fifth round meeting against norwich. Its a game he may not have wanted, but forjose mourinho, the fa cup may now provide the perfect opportunity to do and spares 12 year trophy drought. In imran sidat, bbc news. My my Team Performance within the limits. In the limits familiar with players available and not available. In the limits for them, because two
days ago such incredible match, especially for lucas and son, its almost dramatic to play every minute like they play. So, we suffered. We suffered. We played against a very good team, we played against the tea m good team, we played against the team that was the best on the pits. They were better than us but we deserved to win. Well, celtic remain seven points clear at the top of the scottish premiership. Their old firm rivals rangers won 2 1 at home to hibernian. But celtic enjoyed a thumping 4 0 victory at motherwell. Odsonne edward scored twice for celtic, but the pick of the goals was the third, a rocket from callum mcgregor. Thats celtics 11th consecutive domestic away win. Elsewhere, there were wins for stjohnston, kilmarnock and ross county. While the match at the foot of the table between st mirren and hamilton finished 1 1. To rugby league, as the super league has voted at a Board Meeting today to have more influence to prevent controversial signings in the future. This follows israel folaus move to catalans dragons. The australian rugby player who last year was sacked by Rugby Australia for homophobic comments hasjoined the catala ns dragons for the 2020 superleague season. But several clubs have backed hull krs threat of legal action over the deal. Journalist steve brady is based in france and covers the dragons. And he says the reaction there has been very different to the uk. My my own personal opinion, he will slot into the team perfectly. Ive seen slot into the team perfectly. Ive seen him around the ground, he is a big unit. He kept himself it, you can see him a mahler. Hesjust very keen to play, he wants to play. I dont think well be hearing any more outspoken views on homosexuality or religion, hes going to try and prove himself. Ive got a feeling hes going to hit the Season Running and try to redeem himself back home in his homeland of
australia. And sports authorities in shanghai have recommended the suspension of all sporting events in the city as a result of the coronavirus. The move casts even more doubt on the chinese grand prix, which is in shanghai on the 19th of april. Discussions took place today, and its believed that the race will have to at least be postponed from that original date. The number of cases in china has nowjumped to more than 24,300, with almost 500 deaths so far. Thats all of the sport. Bye for now. Good evening. Fog could cause one or two problems tomorrow morning but essentially things are calm at the moment. But it wont last. This really is the calm before the storm. Things dont much, much mind as we head into the weekend. For the time being, through the rest of the night, simply spells around, a lot of blood feeding into parts of Northern Ireland and scotland with temperatures generally around freezing does make a lot of cloud. Some fog patches, most likely for Central England and also towards the south, also parts of wales. A largely dry day with sunny spells but equally lots of cloud into Northern Ireland, western scotland, particularly bringing the odd spot of rainfor particularly bringing the odd spot of rain for most between devon nine degrees. Friday is looking like a largely fine day as well. Winds a little bit stronger, that should break up the cloud and rain a little more sunshine. Then into the weekend, the met office has named storm shower or a deep area of low pressure they could bring damaging winds almost anywhere across the country
