and it looks as the deeper the air and it looks as if towards the beginning of the next week we could have Stormy Weather as well. Lots of detail to fill you in on over the next few nights. For mid week it looks drier. Rain starts to return for the weekend and potentially Stormy Weather next week. Hello, this is bbc news with ben brown. Well be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment. First the headlines the government says it will introduce emergency legislation over Early Release for terror offences, following an attack on shoppers in south london by 20 year old sudesh amman. Amman was shot dead at the scene by armed police, and had only recently been freed from prison, after serving half of his sentence for terrorism offences. We face an unprecedented situation of severe gravity and, as such, it demands that the government responds immediately and that this legislation will therefore also apply to serving prisoners. Borisjohnson says britain wont bind itself to eu rules in order to get a trade deal by the end of the year. In the united states, democrat president ial candidates go head to head in iowa, as the first event to decide the partys final nominee gets under way. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are kate andrews, economics correspondent for the spectator, and professor anand menon, whos director of uk in a changing europe. Thank you very much for being with us. All of tomorrows front pages are already in. Tomorrows metro leads on the terror attack in south london. The knifeman told friends he wanted to act out scenes from the violent video game call of duty. The Financial Times reports that the chancellor sajid javid is set to miss his own debt targets as the bank of england forecasts a £12 billion black hole. The telegraph says more than a dozen jihadist terrorists are due to be released from prison in the next few months. The paper also carries a photograph of the queen, on her first public duties of the year, visiting raf crew in norfolk. The daily express says hundreds of freed terrorists are on the streets, with more than 350 let out ofjail in the last seven years. The daily mail says a team of 20 armed surveillance officers were tailing the extremist who stabbed two people in yesterdays attack. Tomorrows guardian leads on the governments plans to halt the Early Release of terror offenders. And the front page splash on the i is the alleged attempt by downing street to exclude some of the countrys biggest Media Organisations from a news briefing today, including their newspapers political editor. That is the flavour of the front pages. Really, isuppose it that is the flavour of the front pages. Really, i suppose it is true to say the focus of most of the papers on the aftermath of this attack yesterday in streatham. A Bigger Picture emerging of the 20 year old man who carried out the attack and was then shot dead. The times have the line that he had told prisoners he wanted to kill an mp. We are learning more and more with the passage of time. The times talking about how they stage mock isis styles executions in his cell and that he wanted to kill an mp which was the only way to make people listen. So quite disturbing stories about how radicalised he had become. He actually wanted to copy the murder ofjo cox, disturbingly. It is very unkind but basically it is the only way to get real attention to do Something Big in that way, to take the life of anybody is a terrible ordeal. Which he managed to stab them in yesterdays attack. Other times is highlighting in these more intimate stories. The times. He was radicalised and he was not ready to leave prison and we need to deal with that. The changes to the law that may be associated with that, there is the clear problem that this man, in other circumstances, better circumstances, would not have left prison yet. The times has a picture of him as a teenager, the daily mail have a picture of him as a little boy, boy who dreamt of being a jihadist but also they have more detail about the Police Surveillance operation to follow him. 20 armed officers who were tailing what they called the terror mania. A lot of power involved in that operation. Called the terror mania. A lot of power involved in that operationm strikes me that if youre following someone strikes me that if youre following someone 20 a7, you probably need quite a big team. 2a seven. The question is, how safe can that make us question is, how safe can that make us when this guy managed to slip past these people. If they are out, it is hard to prevent them doing stuff like this. Presumably he could have done much worse had they not been there. They stopped in within 60 seconds so in that sense, they acted very quickly to prevent something far worse from happening. But it is a very expensive and labour intensive. Absolutely. It will allow many people that 20 police officers were use for one person who was really showing indications while still in prison that they were not safe and were planning attacks and they were not ready to be reintegrated into society. If you consider the fact they may be hundreds of terrorists who may be let out in the near future who may or may not require surveillance means resources will be required. The telegraph are saying more than a dozen jihadist terrorists are due to be freed early from prison within months administers awaken to introduce that legislation to keep them behind bars. It sounds quite simple, emergency legislation to stop them getting out a prison early. Isnt that simple . The government saying we have to act now and the government wants to be seen to be acting decisively and the reasons a case, certain cases to keep people behind bars. Boris johnson had talked about that after the fishmongers hall attack. The Biggest Issueis fishmongers hall attack. The Biggest Issue is that it would apply retrospectively and to people who we re retrospectively and to people who were in prison under a different system and that it seems to me will be open to legal challenge. It is not clear they will get exactly what they want but it does seem they will try to reform to make sure you offenders serve more of their centres and that the parole board has to approve. Are you behind this government move or is there an alternative . I am behind trying to change the system but we need to be cautious. In a case like terrorism, when somebody is coming out of prison, still radicalised, it is very easy for us to flow Civil Liberties out the window and the reason to doubt we need to can town it on some level but we should be wa ry it on some level but we should be wary when politicians in particular wa nt wary when politicians in particular want to retrospectively change but a sentence might be which is given through a fair sentence might be which is given througha fairand sentence might be which is given through a fair and just system. I am cautious about it. When we talk about retrospective changes to law, we need to talk about rehabilitation. These two things are going to go hand in hand. If there is going to be a bigger crackdown on those convicted of terrorism, we cannotjust those convicted of terrorism, we cannot just leave them because the reality is at some point, some of these people, they will be back out onto the street and if they are not rehabilitated, not ready tojoin society, they will always bear that risk. We need to be aware of that issue of radicalisation in prison. Because they will come out eventually. Sudesh amman, even if he served his full sentence he would have been out in a year and he would have been out in a year and he would have done exactly the same in a guest time. He could have become even more radicalised and angry. We do not know what he would have done but clearly there has been for a long time an issue with the prison syste m long time an issue with the prison system and what going to focus on, certainly some people need to be ke pt certainly some people need to be kept away from society but other people need to be integrated and we do not have a balance. We have to be honest and say it is probably impossible to get it perfect. The guardian have highlighted that as well, the emergency terror a lot to hold Early Release but highlighting the possibility of a challenge, a legal challenge to that. Absolutely. Already we have heard from people like Dominic Grieve warning about making these things retrospective. I must admit, i share those concerns. It is all very well Going Forward but we need very careful turning around sentences of people that are already in prison. Presumably Boris Johnson and the government have got Popular Support for what they have announced today. They may well have Popular Support for the reason why we have important human rights and a fairandjust we have important human rights and a fair and just system is because sometimes Popular Support does not translate to the rule of law. I think there will be a lot of sympathy making sure people with terrorist criminal convictions are spending time in prison and are safe before coming out but we have to remember that if you put your finger and change retrospectively you can do it in other areas, areas which many people would not want. Moving away from that story and back to the times, the scottish addition. This is an opinion poll suggesting that support for independent has hit 52 . The future of the United Kingdom s is on the future of the United Kingdom s isona the future of the United Kingdom s is on a knife edge with a third poll in data showing at least half of voters in scotland now support independence. Do you think support for independent is on the rise . Yes, the Independence Movement has strengthened partly because of brexit and partly because of the outcome of the election. Wawrinka things for the labour party with a quarter of supporters in favour which poses questions for that party. The number only matters if we are having a referendum and as things stand the government has said no. Most people think if referendum comes is if and when the snp do well in the scottish elections. You could argue this is peak snp, because you have borisjohnson, argue this is peak snp, because you have Boris Johnson, brexit, argue this is peak snp, because you have borisjohnson, brexit, a court case with alex salmond and we do not know what impact that might have. An awful lot could change between now and the elections that align a referendum. An argument is that the longer borisjohnson stops them having, scotland, having a referendum on independence, the more that inherently boosts support for independence because it builds up resentment. A lot of people talked about the problem for Boris Johnson and scotland. I completely agree, the week where one exit the european union, a time when there is a majority for the conservatives, there would be arise. Another big moment is when the uk and eu are out with a free trade deal and if they manage to get something quite comprehensive when scotland is looking to say have a referendum next summer or the hereafter, what the uk relationship with eu . Do things look steady . It may make things look steady . It may make things different. That works in the sense there is a compromise relationship, if scotland gets independence, there has to be a conversation about the border between scotland and england and the might bea between scotland and england and the might be a hard sell in a referendum. The front page of the n referendum. The front page of the i, band. There are posters were ordered out of the number ten briefing. Their reporters. There are certain of the record briefings in numberio are certain of the record briefings in number 10 downing street but on this occasion, some journalists were excluded from the briefing and others walked out in sympathy. There was supposed to be briefing today with david frost. He is the europe advisor to number ten, the with david frost. He is the europe advisorto numberten, the main man for the uk advisorto numberten, the main man forthe uk in advisorto numberten, the main man for the uk in brussels to negotiate eu withdrawal and it was only supposed to be for a select group of journalists. This is separate from the two agreed lobby briefings that we re the two agreed lobby briefings that were agreed upon. Its not as if the lobby are excluded from ten downing streets briefings, but in this situation, they only wanted so journalists to come in. It wasnt left or right, the guardian was invited but papers like the i and the daily mirror were not. Invited but papers like the i and the daily mirrorwere not. In invited but papers like the i and the daily mirror were not. In many ways, this is a westminster inside story but for the rest of the public, it is highlighting those tensions that number ten are intentionally creating with certain Media Outlets because they dont like how theyve been treated. They wont send the cabinet ministers. I think that bubbly has gotten a bit more public intention about our numberten is more public intention about our number ten is operating on whether or not people think they are being given fair treatment all the time. Are there dangers for thejohnson administration in treating the press like this . I dont think any government would want to alienate the lobby because you depend on them. On the other hand, this is a government that wants to be seen to be different and im not convinced by picking these fights it is necessarily putting itself on the wrong side of public opinion. Interesting from the times front page, they were invited who sent the wrong journalist who was excluded. The times. It was in sympathy the whole lobby walk. It was impressive to see the whole lobby walk. If youd gone to the trouble of having a briefing, you would want as many journalists of having a briefing, you would want as manyjournalists as possible to hear it. But previous administrations would disagree. David cameron and theresa may were thought to have done this, they would bring in certain hacks to hear certain briefings. More exclusive briefings for specificjournalists has happened. We shouldnt take issue with it. You can see that making sense. The issue is this has now become public in the pr around it has not been handled particularly well. The telegraph have got children switching off the radio and turning on alexa instead because alexa helps them do homework. Alexa a p pa re ntly alexa helps them do homework. Alexa apparently tells jokes and does homework. The number of kids under i6 homework. The number of kids under 16 listening to the radio has fallen on the number using things like alexa has gone up sharply. Im not sure its a crisis. Im not worried about them using the skill to use the radio. If we can get alexa to turn on and off or play their favourite song but they are using the skill in looking up words in the dictionary or doing their times tables, that is more problematic thanif tables, that is more problematic than if the robot gives them their answer. Have all got phones anyway. The act of having to do it yourself. Maybe the biggest concern is getting 100 on their homework because they are not getting their answers wrong. That is how good alexa is. Yes. The super bowl. We havej lo and shakira and suggestions there was an anti trump message. And suggestions there was an antitrump message. It was explicit. The video looked like children behind bars and in cages, reference to children from latin america coming over the border and to children from latin america coming overthe borderand being separated. Personally, isympathise with the message and Us Immigration policy needs a much bigger shakeup than the uk. I do see however that when you are turning on the super bowl and youve had a long day and everyone else has been preaching about politics, you dont always wanted. People are getting tired of celebrities messaging their politics. I personally dont mind their messaging but i can see why some would say, not tonight. Its a huge event with a massive audience. You could back to 2012 the Opening Ceremony of the olympics where the nhs thing was there. It was a bit much. A lot of other countries looked in and thought, that was a bit much but then again, that was attempting to celebrate something but this is attempting to cause more criticism. Thats the thing about culture getting involved in politics, you cant hide from it. Cultural events like this, it will happen. Since we are talking about donald trump and not referring to a paper but as an american, who do you think is going to be the democrat candidate to take him on . We have the iowa caucuses. I dont dare make predictions. Go on. The polls have been looking good for Bernie Sanders in iowa. The socialist turned democrat candidate. They been looking good for him but iowa is interesting. Some pop sometimes people win who you are not expecting. And joe biden is not far behind. If it was Bernie Sanders taking on donald trump, could he beat him . I suspect joe biden has a better chance against donald trump. America politically is to the right of the uk and of europe and Jeremy Corbyns platform probably went slightly to five year and Bernie Sanders might go too far in the us. Joe biden, much more centrist and a lot of americans are looking for a break. There you go, a bit of president ial politics. Thank you very much. Good to see you both. Thats it for the papers tonight. Dont forget you can see the front pages of the papers online on the bbc news website. Its all there for you 7 days a week at bbc. Co. Uk papers. And if you miss the programme any evening you can watch it later on the bbc iplayer. A big thank you to my guests this evening kate, and anand. Thats all from us tonight, and goodnight. Hello im ben croucher with a round up of the days sports news. England captain eoin morgan says he feels hes still performing at his best as he leads and england team as 50 over world champions for the first time. Theyre playing south africa in the first of three one dayers starting in the morning in cape town. Morgan admitted he had considered his future after that world cup win but isnt sure if hell still be in charge for the next tournament in 2023. We have 2t20 world cup that i am firmly focused on. I think once ive made the decision to continue on, a lot of the time certainly history suggests that the decision whether you like it or not is taken out of your hands given performance, individual performance or Team Performance so certainly my mind is set on the next two to 20 world cup s. If i make it to the 50 other world cup, that would be great. Theres still no place for finn russell in scotlands six nations squad. He was sent home before the tournament for breaching Team Protocol during a drinking session. Hes been left out of the squad to face england at murrayfield this saturday. Adam hastings started in his absence for their defeat against ireland at the weekend. Adam hastings was good and good enough to merit being picked again in that number ten jersey. If finn is not starting, yes, he can make a big impact of the bench but with the media around on the issues that there were two weeks ago in the camp, why disrupt a positive feel, albeit in defeat, from dublin for that . I think my answer to the question when asked on saturday night or sunday was, bring them in the week before the game and embed them back into the squad, if thats going to happen at all. England have retained manu tuilagi in their squad for the scotland game. He limped off early against france yesterday with a groin problem but will continue to be assessed by medical staff. Ireland Centre Garry Ringrose will definitely be missing their next two games against wales and england. Hes had a procedure on a hand injury picked up in the win over scotland. Shaun wane says he and the players will do all they can to win the Rugby League World cup in england next year after being named the new england head coach. First up with be australia in the autumn and the 2021 world cup in england. Wane led wigan to three superleague grand final victories. He replaces Wayne Bennett and says hes returning to league a better coach than when he left to take up a post with the Scottish Rugby union after the 2018 season. I saw isaw an i saw an International Game from a different sport. Its similar but different sport. Its similar but different in many, many ways so i did look at the nfl. Im trying to get better every single minute of every single day so i use that time, whats going to make me a better coach. The thing i mainly about his work ethic in detail, make sure we stay the same but there are a few worries with team preparation, training preparation which i will do things differently but which will make me better. Liverpool held their usual Pre Match Press Conference today ahead of their fa cup replay with shrewsbury town tomorrow. The big difference though was the absence of their usual manager. As the tie falls during the premier leagues first winter break jurgen klopp and most of the first team are taking some time off. So under 23s boss Neil Critchley will take charge instead. He supports the Young Players unbelievably well as his shown so far this season so his presence, evenif far this season so his presence, even if he isnt there, his presence is always felt by our younger players and by me myself and i also think maybe 1 , that came into his thinking around his decision that the way we played against aston villa, maybe the boys deserved another opportunity. Thats all the sport for now. You can find more on all those stories on the bbc sport website. Thats bbc. Co. Uk sport.
