So why must you always concentrate on colour, or religion, or this . There are other ways of connecting men. I tell you this. When i left this country in 1948, i left this country with one reason only, one reason. I might have gone to hong kong, i might have gone to timbuktu. I ended up on the streets of paris. There was a theory that nothing worse could happen to me there that had already happened to me here. You talk about making it as a writer about yourself. You have to be able then to turn all the intent with which you live, because once you turn on your back on this society, you may die. You can see it seems really, really urgent, really engaging, and its a terrific watch. Its brilliantly constructed. The montage work is fantastic. The way in which they mix news footage and television and films. There is a very coherent argument, which is about the sort of nature of america, which seems every bit as pertinent now as it did when this was sort of first envisaged. The thing that was most striking about it is, on the one hand, you asked, is it a documentary. Yes, it is. Its nominated alongside 13th. But its also a polemical essay. Its basically its a visual essay thats put together with i think extraordinary clarity. But it doesnt lecture. No, it doesnt and thats whats so brilliant about it. You end up feeling that what you are seeing is a visual representation of an argument that may have been laid down a Literature Down in literature and really engaging, really as i said timely. Feels very, very urgent. Put together in a way that absolutely grabs the audiences attention and leads them through this story. I think it does so brilliant. I think it does so brilliantly. It was up against very strong competition in the oscars, but its a really good piece of work that is accessible to everybody, i think. And has done really well at the box office. It really has. Perhaps more than they expected, which is quite heartening as well. Now. Now, look, mr kermode, because when we decided that we would like to continue working together, i said your challenge of course was to try to get me into horror films. Well, thanks for doing that on week one. Thats fine. Because ive read a lot about raw. But you havent seen it. You havent yet seen it. I havent the stomach to go. Yes, you do. Its a French Belgian cause c l bre, from the writer directorjulia ducournau. The story of a young woman who was a vegetarian, who goes to that school and there are these hazing rituals. Who goes to vet school and there are these hazing rituals. One such ritual, she is forced to eat a raw rabbit. She says, im not going to do that, im a vegetarian, but then she starts to develop previously suppressed appetites. The film turns into on the one hand a horror movie, that refers to movies like i suppose trouble every day, and to some that refers to movies like i suppose claire denis trouble every day, and to some extent carrie, we are what we are. But on the other hand is a story about a young woman attempting to fit in when she is a misfit, about somebody who really wants to be part of a group but discovers that shes something outside the group. Its very metaphorical and allegorical and on some level the director described it as a modern tragedy, a modern ancient tragedy. Its also got a Fairy Tale Element to it. Yes, there are visceral things in it. Yes, there are moments in which you will gasp and recoil, but theres also humour, wit. Theres really heartfelt emotion in it. Brilliant performances. Its a film which means something. It has meaty substance, pun fully intended. Yes. I hear you, but i also read that people have been actually physically sick in the cinema yeah, stories about people fainting im sure are exaggerated. whispering theyre not im sure they are exaggerating. Honestly, give it a go, youll really like it i promise. Lets see how long we Work Together before i have the guts, in every sense, to go and see that. I am however really looking forward to a quiet passion, the Terence Davies. Im a huge fan of Terence Davies. A genuine poet of cinema. This is his film about emily dickinson. A terrific central performance i think by Cynthia Nixon. She is the young poet was told early on that the classics of every language of the works of them, not women, says an editor who agrees every language of the works of men, not women, says an editor who agrees to publish one of her least wayward problems. Shes a rebellious spirit, she is wrestling with the eternal soul, with religion, with society. Also with her lack of recognition in her lifetime. She is finding solace in herfamily, and herfriends. Heres a clip. This is my third commencement ball. And not a hint of romance. Do you suppose that men are frightened of a woman who teaches, and is used her independence . What i like about this film is, on the one hand, it is really funny. There is real life and laughter in it. Its also very profound. It is a film which is about poetry which has visual poetry, the composition is painterly. You end up thinking of vermeer or carl dryer. If you know Terence Davies work, and the way in which she will if you know Terence Davies work, and the way in which he will move a camera very slowly around a room or a theatre, he is somebody who at an early age fell in love with cinema, sitting in the balcony as a child, looking at the moving image. You can tell this from every frame of the movie. Emily dickinson, she became reclusive. She got frailer, and as she got older, she lived in the same house for years and years. Is there a sense of claustrophobic about this, as a result . As in all of Terence Davies films, one of the things he does brilliantly is writing about people whose inner lives of very profound. Of course, what happens is, she expresses herself through poetry. At one point, she says there is posterity, i suppose, but i would like to be recognised during my lifetime. Of course, it all came later on. This is classic Terence Davies material. People trapped in slightly claustrophobic, slightly suffocating circumstances but with these vibrant inner lives. As i said, the thing to remember is, and i think the poster has tried to play this up it is very funny. There is a lot of laughter. It is also tragic and spiritual and transcendent. But think about it in a week in which you have this, and you have im not your negro, and raw. You have the full smorgasbord of cinema right there, and i want you to see all three of those films because i think you will find something in all three of them, including raw. Thats my task for the weekend ahead. Goodness best out, she said, moving on swiftly . Something i think is really good fun although its proving very divisive is Ben Wheatleys free fire. It is a kind of absurdist action movie, all entirely set in a warehouse with a group of entirely incompetent and unsympathetic characters, taking potshots at each other. Its like they have taken the central idea which is the shoot out at the end of a film, what if you made the whole film that thing . It almost plays out in real time. Fantastic cast, brie larson, cillian murphy, armie hammer. Just a terrific piece of cinema. Again, much funnier than you would expect from the subject matter. 0k. I will have to take your word on that one. Dvd, for anyone who wants to stay in . Moana, which is proper classic modern disney. Its the story about a young polynesian adventurer, who sets out into the ocean in order to save her homeland. Wonderful songs, absolutelyjust jaw dropping animation. Beautiful storytelling. A film made with real love and affection, that you can watch at any age at all. From nine to 90. It is a real winner. Is it aimed at children, but actually it is one of those that adults can watch . I think like all the best kids movies, its aimed at all of us. If you think of inside out, or mary poppins. Films that anyone of any age can sit down and just be overwhelmed by. I will probably discover now that my nieces have already seen it ten times. Oh yeah they are always ahead of us. Thank you very much, mark. It is warming up across many parts of the country, even on saturday. Sunshine Northern England opted to scotland. Another lovely day across england and wales. After a chilly start, those temperatures will rise sharply. Probably peaking towards the south east, 20 or 2 degrees. It one day the Northern England and was on friday. So too in Northern Ireland and most of scotland. During the evening and overnight, light winds, no wind at all and clear skies. Measures will fall away. Some mist and fog. It will start to cloud over in the north West Of Scotland and much of Northern Ireland. Clearer skies in the countryside, it will be chilly there. Perhaps not as cold as it was on saturday. Warm air on the southerly wind, but it is meeting this Weather Front here silly clashes taking place on sunday. Apart from eastern scotland, which does not look too bad for the most of the day, Northern Scotland does not look so good. This band of rain coming down. For england and wales there is a lot of sunshine. Maybe a bit more Cloud Filling in across the irish sea. 131a degrees where it is cloudy, but temperatures are set to peak at 22 Degrees North of london towards the East Midlands and cambridgeshire. This heat will not last much longer though. This Weather Front bringing the rain last much longer though. This weatherfront bringing the rain in the north west on sunday. Sweeping southwards, bringing the rain at all but introducing a north westerly winds, bringing in some colder air. For many of us, monday where well be dry, we may have cloudy skies like this. It will feel colder and it certainly looks colder across Northern Scotland, where there may well be some wintry showers as well. Many places will have a dry day, but these are the maximum temperatures. For some parts of england and wales, there is some 8 degrees. That caller wind will not last into tuesday. It gets cut off, the colder air goes to scandinavia. Instead we get more of a westerly wind around at High Pressure which will blow and more cloud across Northern Ireland england and scotland, and most of the rain in scotland. For Southern England and the midlands, its going to be dry. Still those temperatures no better than about 15 degrees. That High Pressure is going to move a bit as we look into the outlook. We could well find a shrinking to a certain extent, as that whether fa ncy certain extent, as that whether fancy southward. Such manner as that Weather Front sweeps southward. It will fill quite chilly out there. Ten or ii will fill quite chilly out there. Ten or 11 degrees at best across the Northern Parts of the uk. That takes us Northern Parts of the uk. That takes us into the outlook then, where we have the jet stream to the north and diving down the eastern side. Around that area of High Pressure quite an elongated area. That high looks like it will be sitting into the easter period towards the south west. This is the general Weather Pattern we are expecting. Around the high, some north westerly winds. That will bring some sunshine and showers. Particularly in the that position could move further north. It is going to be quite cool in those winds.
