Still morphing but are they mighty . And lost city of z, a real life tale of exploration. Life. It could be anything set in the International Space station i think . Yes, exactly. It is a kind of sci fi horror hybrid. A soil sample from mars is sent back to the International Space station. The crew open it up and find a single cell organism, they are delighted because it is obviously proof of life on mars. The single cell organism starts growing, everybodys terribly excited, then it becomes dormant. They decide, against the advice of the entire audience, to give the organism a little bit of an Electric Shock and see what that does. Heres a clip. Ready. Lowering oxygen, more carbon dioxide. Are you sure it wont hurt it . Its a very, very low voltage. Look how fast its growing. Every single cell is a muscle and nerve cell. All muscle, all brain. Argh its in between my fingers and its not letting go. Can i make a suggestion . Can ijust go in and get him . No, of course youre not because we are in quarantine. Stop. I can, i can, i can do this, um. Help whats going on . . You get the general idea. I was laughing before, but im not now. Heres the thing, star studded cast. The organism gets out and then theyre all stuck in a tin can floating round with nothing to do and then the organism starts to pick them off one by one, getting bigger and more agile. So, it starts out as gravity, then turns into alien, and then its a little bit life force and then it goes a little bit event horizon, before turning back to being alien for a bit more and then back into gravity with a little bit of planet of the apes. It doesnt have any originality in it at all. There is not one single idea that is original. However, what it does is that it tells a story that you know but it tells it with a degree of a wit. Its104 minutes long but it feels like it is 85. It zips along, it looks terrific. All the characters are best described as thumbnail sketches. He is the scientist person, this is the person with the kids and hes. It does exactly what you expect. When you look back at alien, it was drawing on a series of other Horror Movies but with a certain twist in terms of hr giger design and Ridley Scotts direction. This is nothing here you havent seen before but its done stylishly. Heres the thing, i thought this was meant to be a horrorfilm or a sci fi horrorfilm. I have noticed a smile playing on your lips for your entire description. I enjoyed it. There are things in it that are creepy, a bit yucky. I like this stuff but you are not a fan of horror. No, im not. It is tension, rather than gore. There is a very famous moment in alien that is much more revolting than anything in this. But when that happened in alien, nobody had ever seen that done before. Its fine, its disposable, its whats referred to as a Popcorn Movie for very good reason. But i enjoyed it, but it is not at all original. Moving on to Power Rangers. Do they still exist . Who knew . In todays marketplace, if you have a 70s or 80s naff tv franchise or toy thing you want to resurrect, you just reboot it for the big screen with a 12 certificate and a lot of cgi. The power ranger tv series which was cutting japanese with american footage, now what you have is this rebooting, it is basically the Breakfast Club as superhero movie. Its main usp being that with the collection of young kids who are then going to become the Power Rangers, the film addresses things like autism, lg btiq issues, diversity, albeit in a very flimsy fashion but it has a modern edge. It has a 12a Certificate which has caused great annoyance because a huge amount of the Target Audience for Power Rangers are people younger than 12. The bbfc have always said 12 means i2 and absolute bottom age is eight. Already today ive had messages from people seen people asking if they can take their 4 year olds to see it. Well, no. But its a weird film, it has a certain degree of post tra Nsformers Crudity and a certain amount of violence in it, because its mighty morphin Power Rangers and thats what they do. They hit people. It is less leering than transformers, less fun than real steel, its too long, its nonsense and it makes no sense but it wasnt terrible. It wasjust kind of, ok, thats what mighty morphin Power Rangers looks like if you stick it up on a big screen and do that to it. Its totally innocuous and surprisingly unremarkable. I love it when you tell me something that can go on a poster. This week, ladies and gentlemen, that is, its not terrible. There you have it. Now, the lost city of z. Yes, true story, british explorer percy fawcetts early 20th century explorations of the amazon. Charlie hunnam is fawcett, the man who was described as having made an unfortunate choice of ancestors. He wants to make his family name good and is told that if he goes on this exploration, it will indeed restore his great family name. The more he explores, he discovers that this is what he wants to do with his life, its his calling. However, where he is travelling to is dangerous and also surprising. Heres a clip. Get your concertina my concertina, sir . Yes, do it now play Soldiers Of The Queen come on come and sing with me come are you ready . Were Soldiers Of The Queen, my lads. Whove been, my lads, whove seen, my lads. Amigos does that help, the singing . Oddly, yes, it does. There are moments that are very strange. I dont know if you noticed behind the beard, Robert Pattinson almost unrecognisable as henry costin. I think hes rather terrific. It is beautifully shot by darius khondji. It is slow and oddly elliptical. More so than most mainstream audiences will be able to cope with. The film has certain structural flaws. However, there are individual moments in it that are really striking. Theres a moment when they come across a musical being mounted in the jungle which reminds me of herzogs fitzcarraldo. There are things that evoke conrad and coppola. Also is also a sequence in it which is weirdly reminiscent of another Werner Herzog film. What i liked was while i was watching it, it was strangely uneven. It has been five days since i saw it and it has lingered in my mind. There are images that are very arresting, it looks absolutely beautiful. A terrific performance by sienna miller, his wife who is left behind in england. It is a very thankless role but she makes something of it. It is the toughest character on screen. It is flawed but it aims high. I would rather see something aim high and fail in certain areas than something which felt like franchise fodder. It has a strangely Old Fashioned feeling to it. There are moments, there is a Dream Sequence which is oddly reminiscent of the end of 2001. That is not something you would expect from a film like this. It is really unusual, definitely flawed but very interesting. Alright, the best film . Get out. You have to see get out. Described by the director as a social thriller rather than a horror. The best way of describing and is, if you think of the writings of ira levin who wrote rosemarys baby and stepford wives, story about a Young African american man whos welcomed into the home of a rich, liberal white family and their smiles seem to hide something very creepy underneath. Its a satire on post racial, liberal america. It has great depth. It is sharp and scary when it needs to be. I know youre not a horror film fan, but its a thriller. 0k . Its not horror film. It is, but its not a horrorfilm, it is. But its a thriller. Youll enjoy it. And a United Kingdom . Again, based on a true story. His relationships outrage the government. It takes the personal and the political and puts them together in a way which is completely understandable and enjoyable, but also tells a great story. Thank you very much. See you next week. A quick reminder that you can find all the film news you would ever want online on our website. You can find all of our previous programmes on iplayer as well. Thats all for this week, thanks very much for watching. Hello there. Throughout the weekend i have been talking about large diurnal temperature ranges, the range in temperature from day to night. Today, with some sunshine, we got the warmest day of the year, again beating yesterday. 20 degrees at aviemore, but overnight temperatures just below freezing. We have seen some contamination of cloud coming into the uk from the south, it is mostly feeding in from the north sea where we are filling in underneath this area of High Pressure with Cloud Streaming in off the north sea in the part of england and wales in particular. With clearer skies either side it will be quite chilly, especially across scotland, with A Touch Of Frost in the western side in particular. It will be colder across southern parts of england that it has been recently because it is not as windy. Any frost in the north will lift fairly quickly across mainland scotland. We may have more cloud in the morning across northern ireland, lifting the frost and one or two missed and fog patches as well. Most of the greyness, missed and fog is likely to be off the north sea in the North East England, perhaps the midlands and east wales in the morning. The odd patch further south and east but also some sunshine. That sunshine is probably going to bea that sunshine is probably going to be a more dominant feature of the weather on monday. It will slowly tend to burn up and break up a lot of this low cloud. A few patches could linger into the afternoon, but most of us will see the sunshine. If it stays a bit cloudy across North East England and south east scotland, across the coast, it will be feeling cold. 0therwise scotland, across the coast, it will be feeling cold. Otherwise the numbers are similarto be feeling cold. Otherwise the numbers are similar to what we had today. The best across the western highlands, and in the South Of England winds will be lighter than we have seen for the last few days. 0vernight we are going to pick up more cloud, ringing the likelihood of more rain in the north and west. Still decent temperatures by day, and a southerly breeze. The main feature is not High Pressure, which gets pushed out into the near continent at a big area of low pressure swamping the atlantic which will bring much more changeable conditions across the uk. And the first signs of rain really arrive with a form of these showers coming into the south west. Wales and wetter weather for northern ireland, and the midlands and southern scotland. For the north east of scotla nd scotland. For the north east of scotland the onshore breeze, cloudy and cool here but otherwise decent temperatures on the whole and with fewer showers and a bit more sunshine in east anglia and the south east, this is where we will have the highest temperatures. As the low temperatures spin Weather Fronts our way, more organised rain for northern and western areas. Much of eastern scotland should be dry, bright and warm. Im Sharanjit Leyl in singapore.
