For the capitals hospitality industry. It explains the situations made worse by the Prime Minister advising people to avoid going out but not ordering the businesses to close down, which means owners cant claim financial assistance. And finally, ending with a ray of hope the New York Times is among many covering the search for a Coronavirus Vaccine and shows one of the first people to participate in a fast tracked human trial. Today we have briefing regular cornelia meyer, ceo of Business Consultancy mrl corporation. Shejoins us from consultancy mrl corporation. She joins us from her home consultancy mrl corporation. Shejoins us from her home in switzerland because you couldnt get on a plane to travel to the uk. You are in isolation for an hour, cornelia. Tell us about what is happening in switzerland at the moment . We are in isolation. Its quite serious. 0n moment . We are in isolation. Its quite serious. On friday, four of our five federal counsellors, our ministers, we only have seven, aymon and said no more than 100 people, no more than 50 people in a restau ra nt more than 50 people in a restaurant and you stay home, dont travel. And then this monday, and i saw, iforesaw that, which is why i didnt bore that plane, we had a conversation on sunday afternoon. Today, this evening they said schools will close as of friday, today they said all restau ra nts of friday, today they said all restaurants are closed, only essential shops, shops that have essentials, drugstores are open and only food shops for food shopping are open. Kids are at home, please that home, dont go out. In switzerland there are more than 2300 cases, arent there . So far 19 deaths, i believe. Maybe that number has gone up, which is more cases than the uk for a small country. Per capita after italy it is the hardest hit in europe. If you put it on per capita, because it is 10 million people, its fewer people that live in london. So it is worrying and what the government is trying to do, similarto government is trying to do, similar to what borisjohnson is trying to now do is spread, try to delay the spread throughout the population so when you have this distribution curve, it doesnt spike all at the same time. So the hospitals can cope. Lets talk about the times. Coronavirus, number 10 strategy switch may save 250,000 lives. A very startling headline that some may find ha rd to headline that some may find hard to comprehend. It is more than 250,000 people would have died in previous plans to control the spread. Died in previous plans to controlthe spread. Im actually not surprised about that because it is basically the same reason, if you spread it out and you dont have everybody at the same time needing intensive care, then fewer people will die. If you look at italy right now, if you look at italy right now, if you look at italy right now, if you look at lombardi, they have to decide on is this persons life with saving or not . Lombardy. There is a triage, very gruesome pictures. What i didnt understand is why we let it slide for so long because the government talked about herd immunity, but how can you have heard immunity in a virus where you dont know if you had it, how long you are immune . So that seems to me like a rather courageous approach. I am glad, im also british and they mainly live in london, i am very glad we have come around and now have majestic measures. But i would also like to see children not have to go to school because they have, as they found out in italy and in china and in switzerland, they are the fastest spreaders. All of my children are still at school, thats interesting. All of the schools where i live outside of london. They said many of their friends are just not at school. Parents are taking their own children, their own decisions to take children at home even though schools are open here. This figure of 250,000 lives will be saved, because of the change in government strategy, in china there are over 3200 deaths. In south korea, amazingly 81 deaths and yet over a thousand cases. You can deaths and yet over a thousand cases. You can see where countries have effectively managed to stop the spread and stop the fatality of this, havent they . Absolutely. And it takes draconic measures. Who would have thought a country like switzerland, you know, they haven from all bad things happening in the world would go into lockdown . The haven. Happening in the world would go into lockdown . The haven. So le figaro has Emmanuel Macron on the front page, his calling ita on the front page, his calling it a health water and strong measures put in place in france 110w. Measures put in place in france now. And it was seen as necessary in france because even with all the warnings, people were still gathering and getting together and being socially active. Now they have had today the down in france. Absolutely. And he very clear. You get fined if you dont, there is a form you can print out and you need to sign you are going food shopping, otherwise you cannot go out. And they have sent the army our in alsace, where they have a lot of cases was that they sent a medical battalion out to help with that. So they are very strict. And what i found, i listen to president macrons speech because being in switzerland i get french tv, and he said basically now everybody should concentrate on what is essential and read. And cornelia, i love to get your ta ke cornelia, i love to get your take on financial markets. They look at global stocks being pummelled on monday despite fed action and that was a sunday night announcement of a 1 cut in Interest Rates to virtually zero in the us. Everybody seems unconvinced this help . Will absolutely. And you saw earlier over the last two weeks the bank of england lowered the rate by 50 basis points and the fed lowered the rate by 50 basis points and that was just lost. I dont think these are measures that can be combated with monetary measures. Yes, you will need to do is something to ensure that you still have liquidity in the system, otherwise banks go under and that would not work, but i think it is more the fiscal measures and it is the programmes, the targeted programmes, the targeted programmes, so parts of the industries such as airlines and hospitality than small retailers that are hardest hit would give us the most bang for buck. And i have argued for a long time, since about 2012 or so that Central Banks should raise the rates again so they have more ammunition when the next crisis it comes. And boy, did it come all right, were going to have delivered there, and one knuckles that i i am going to have to leave it there, cornelia, i hope youre not feeling too lonely. Always a pleasure to talk to you. Hopefully we see you again soon in the studio when all of this gets better. Cornelia meyer joining us from her home in switzerland as opposed to her london days. Ijust wanted to mention some other tweets. This is from leticia parkinson, watching us in tobago. She says really similar measures are taking place here, the only way we know how is actually we getting virtual gatherings under way. So she talks about virtual parties, 13 28th birthday, we threw a virtual party, we had a live dj, she said it was absolutely spectacular. 12,500 people got involved virtually at that party. This is the innovative way people are coping with this situation. Have a really good day, ill see you soon. Hello. The week started on a dry, fine, sunny note for many parts of england and wales. And it really was a sparkler of a day, finishing with glorious colours in the sunset, as captured here across great yarmouth. It wasnt like that everywhere, because for scotland, for Northern Ireland, after a decent start to monday, so that weather front spread some cloud, some wind, some rain quite widely. Now, that front drags its way a little bit further south, but youll notice theres a kink in it. And thats going to be quite an important kink, because it thickens the cloud. After a bright enought start in Northern Ireland, the rain is soon in here. Quite a bit of it, as well, as you see. And it spreads across a good part of mainland scotland on into the afternoon, some of it getting across the border. Further south, wee bit of brightness. The south westerly breeze will usher in some really mild airs. And if you get a wee bit of sunshine, to the eastern side of the pennines, east anglia, down towards the south east, 13, 1a, 15 could well be yours. A more showery regime across the northern and Western Isles throughout the course of the day, and indeed on into the evening. Once that little wave is away on the weather front, that will allow it to relax its way ever further south. Slow progress, it has to be said, because its running into an area of High Pressure across biscay and the near continent. So its around and about on wednesday across wales, southern counties of england, the midlands and east anglia and lincolnshire. Further north, much brighter skies, but that sunshine doing nothing for your temperatures. The last of tuesdays really mild air is trapped there, particularly in the south east, where again we could peak at around 1a or 15 degrees. Now, from wednesday on into thursday, that weather front, more a band of cloud rather than anything else at this stage for many southern counties, mayjust have enough about it for there to be a bit of rain down into this far south western quarter. But wales, north midlands northwards, increasingly sunny as you drift that wee bit further north. But again, theres a chilly feel right across the piece. We are into single figures. A change to the day from thursday to friday, but the overall setup is very little change, other than we might see a little bit more activity on that weather front across the southern counties of england, so the chance for some rain here, and a noticeable easterly wind. So thatll make it feel fairly cool, to say the least. Further north, at least youve got the benefit of the sunshine across the midlands, much of wales, scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of england. But again, those temperatures are in single figures. The weekend brings us the prospect of mainly dry weather, with some sunshine, feeling chilly, and therell be some frosty nights, too. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. 0ur headlines today dramatic changes to life in the uk as the government advises everyone to avoid non essential contact and travel in the battle against coronavirus. I cannot remember anything like it in my lifetime. I dont think there has been anything like it in peacetime and we must accept that it isa peacetime and we must accept that it is a considerable psychological and Behavioural Change that we are asking you and asking the public, the nation to do. But i have no doubt that we can do it. Anyone over the age of 70, pregnant women, and those
