The London Marathon but not as we know it. We look ahead to this weekends socially distanced race. As one of the favourites pulls out. And who needs hawaii . As the worlds leaving adapted surfers come to bristol. Good evening welcome to tonights programme. Were going to start with a story involving one of the biggest names in Rugby League Sam Burgess is under Police Investigation in australia, over allegations of Domestic Violence and illegal drug use. Rugby League Officials are also looking into claims that the south sydney rabbitohs the club he played for, and then coached covered up the incidents for burgess. Our Senior Sports News Reporter laura scott has more. This was front page of the australian, they made allegations of Domestic Violence and drug use. There was a strong denial issued to the newspaper by his lawyers, but this is clearly a major story. Because he took on cult status in australia. The start of rugby league but many here will also see the going into rugby union at the 2015 world cup. Several statements today following that story in the australian. New South Wales Police say they are investigating various allegations and the National Rugby league said that their integrity unit is conducting an investigation asa unit is conducting an investigation as a priority. They said that this was new information to them but both of these if these allegations are true they will take action. He played then became an assistant coach, this of the allegations were very concerning and said that there is no place in our society for violence, harassment or abuse against women. Burgess, as i said, it denies the allegations has stood down from his role from fox sports and assistant coach while these investigations continue. Joined by my colleague who with the presenter with the bbc in a former Rugby League Player himself, thanks for joining us. Just to give us an idea of how huge this is, its almost like talking about the premier league of australia. Absolutely. Its like comparing sam burgess to the likes of harry kane or Raheem Sterling if you want to make a comparison from a football point of view. Hes a huge name in the sport in australia and the sport itself can be look at the major sport over the winter you got Australian Rules Football which covers the whole country. Rugby union which is on more of the east coast and goes all the way up the east coast. And its a massive sport and the type of conjecture that comes with it when things go wrong, its really only comparable for what happens with the english premier league. Sam is one of those players can be like one of those players they go through life and their billing and what they do they make mistakes and in this type of sporting atmosphere everything that happens is going to be picked up that happens is going to be picked up now. From him as a player he was absolutely outstanding, moving to the south city there and they were ina the south city there and they were in a premiership with 2014. He broke his cheekbone in the very first incident of the game, got questioned coming off at half time and asked how it is and he said it was pretty much a four letter word which is how he said it was, but they came back and won the grand final. As a player, thats what hes known for his toughness on the field. Thanks for your expertise on that. The final day of the premiership season has been called into question following reports that 16 sale sharks players have tested positive for coronavirus. If sale are unable to field a team on sunday they will forfeit the game. Our reporter sara orchard has more. The first thing is if they cannot actually play the game, that means that would automatically forfeit the game against wister 20 points to nell. The reason thats significant is this weekend is the big climax for the end of the regular premiership season and there were one of four clubs that were playing for one of three available places in the semi finals. Them along with bath, bristol and wasps. The semi finals. Them along with bath, bristoland wasps. One the semi finals. Them along with bath, bristol and wasps. One was a lwa ys bath, bristol and wasps. One was always going to miss out, if this is all proven true tomorrow we get the premiership from Premiership Rugby and theyve been unavailable from comment. It may be tough for them to feel that side because theyll operate one of the smallest professional squads in the whole of the premiership, there would have to draw on their academy if they have them available. On top of that they may be allowed to bring an emergency loa n may be allowed to bring an emergency loan players, but you just dont know whats happening, very late stage for them and could jeopardise their chances of making the semi finals. Then its notjust about them, it could have wider repercussions. Thats right. They played northampton saints on tuesday night we have to wait for the results of Contact Tracy because we dont know which players have tested positive if they were involved in that match on tuesday night and what contact they did or did not have with any saints players. Its thought that maybe thats why Premiership Rugby are not saying anything at the moment because they have to do their Due Diligence and have to do their Due Diligence and have to do their Due Diligence and have to go back and check whos had contact with who and if this is one match thats going to be impacted, 01 match thats going to be impacted, or if it could be two. The pandemic is also struck scottish football tonight with this postponed. Well the pandemic has also struck scottish football tonight with kilmarnocks premiership tie with motherwell postponed. Killies entire squad is in self isolation after a total of six positive covid 19 tests within the team this week. Heres our sports news correspondent Chris Mclaughlin with more. Well, things took a turn for the worst here earlier in earlier in the week when it club confirmed that three players tested positive and a further three last night tested positive, that meant clearly they had a problem and a cluster. What happened after that was that the test and trace team from the nhs advised that the rest of the squad here and the Backroom Team had to self isolate. Clearly following on from that, tonights game could go ahead. A postponement from that game, they will try to find some point further down the line in the fixture schedule to have that game replayed. They do have scottish meat cut pictures coming up in the next ten days as a meeting to decide what happens with them on monday. This is the first time in scottish football that we have seen a club requesting that we have seen a club requesting that a game is postponed due to coronavirus, i think theres a feeling that unfortunately it wont be the last. And more bad news from scotland in the last hour the entire challenge cup competition has been cancelled by the spfl. Its after 80 of clubs voted against it going ahead without fans. Third seed Elina Svitolina is also through. Lets turn our attention now to a busy weekend of live sporting action on the bbc. In rugby league its challenge cup semifinal day tomorrow. First up, leeds rhinos take on wigan warriors at 2. 30 and then Salford Red Devils taking on warrington wolves at five oclock oclock both those games live on the bbc. Im joined now by leeds rhinos scrum half, Richie Myler Richie a huge weekend ahead. Thanks for having me. The thing about these two clubs give theyve dominated the competition right from the very start, you almost feel like both of these sides almost raise their game when they clash . Obviously with the cup runs in the 80s and 90s with the super league its two titans going at it and so is going to be a great one to watch. Rhinos of course have not won the challenge cup since 2015, do you think this is going to be your year . We hope so. 2020 has been one of those crazy years where everything is been up in the air. 18 minutes away from it come a tough game and its a quality. We have breaking news from washington so lets head back to jane hill. Thank you, apologies to interrupt this work, straight the white house because the number of people have just opposed the podium and we think that there without press secretary is among them, lets listen in following that positive micro and test for the president. Talking about emergency declarations for states as well as stimulus, so hes hard at work despite the mild symptoms. Why would he still go if he tested positive, and who he had contacted. It was deemed saved for the president to go, it was socially distant and outdoor event and deemed safe for him to attend that event. When i brief that hope was positive, we see the positive reporting and we encourage you to ask the question it, i had no awareness. Not you but others who reported it falsely. I had no knowledge of the positive test before the briefing. Who exactly assessed that it was safer the president to travel to new jersey because of the small space and the air force one and the fundraiser stop white house operations made the assessment that it was safer the president and consultation and others. A brief statement lawful lot more questions being fired there, but not wanted to a nswer being fired there, but not wanted to answer more questions saying that President Trump is hard at work despite those mild symptoms that we are told he has. President trump and the first lady testing positive of course for covid 19. Not long before we we re course for covid 19. Not long before we were talking with the first president ial debate but we do know thatjoe biden has not tested positive, so hes had a negative test result. But the president still ha rd test result. But the president still hard at work, says one of his press secretaries. Much more to come from the us from seven, i will go straight back now to to the sport. Thanks. Welcome back to support state where we are talking about the busy week and we got ahead with by busy week and we got ahead with Rugby League Challenge cup semi final day and joined by richie myler whojoins me now. Apologies for the interruption there. We were talking about the fact that this could become weak ands year. About the fact that this could become weak ands yearlj about the fact that this could become weak ands year. I hope its not there year. No, weve been building quite nicely the last couple of years, so we put this just away from the final, and going against tough opponents and we know its going to be a full squad, full tea m its going to be a full squad, full team effort to get the job done. One of the talking points here is the fa ct of the talking points here is the fact that when you go out to a competition like this you want to do it in front of a massive crowd. There will be no crowds this time, how do you think that will make a difference and have an impact on the team . In the year that we have had a think its another one of those things. Its not anything without the fans. They make it special. Its almost going to be one of those surreal ones that if you do make it and play in front of no crowds its probably going to be magical in itself because of the difference when you always look back and say remember when we had no fans . Its a weird one but we were hoping to get fa ns weird one but we were hoping to get fans back in as soon as possible because it makes it a lot easier and better for us. Still the same to play at wembley. Thank you so much and of course taking on the warriors, thats at half past two tomorrow. This sunday, after a bit of a delay its the London Marathon but not as we know it. Runners from all over the uk are taking part in a virtual version of the race. While the elite athletes compete in a secure biosphere in stjamess square running loops of a closed course. Joe lynskey has the details. The London Marathon is normally about so much more than just who wins, but weve known since august now that the 2020 race is going elite only in one of londons royal parks. Usually the marathon route sprawls across the city from Greenwich Park through the docklands and into westminster and the mall this year these elite runners will compete in stjames park theyll do 19 laps of the perimeter and then go up the mall to the finish line. This is how the parks been prepared in the last few days. Its going to be screened from public view so spectators dont congregate to watch the action. A lot of planning has gone in to get this event on in any form these are some of the aspects that will look unusual. The 100 runners and 500 organisers will wear Bump Technology it uses radio frequency to alert someone if they come within two metres, although the runners will take them off for the race itself. Mo farahs going to be there, but not competing, just as a pacemaker. It could be a wet one as well which may affect the chances of eliup kipchoge breaking his world record remember he did break the two hour mark at an event last year but that wasnt a race so isnt recognised in athletics as a record. Kipchoges main rival on sunday was set to be ethiopias kenenisa bekele, but hes withdrawn with a calf injury. Earlier we asked steve cram what that means for the race. He had not had the chance to run this as they did but came within two seconds of the true world record in berlin last year, and the two of the racing each other on this course would have been a real spectacle, not sure it could have hundred percent predicted that elliott would win. Hes a said they had to pull out, and does lead the way open for him to be dominant of the rest of the field. Very different dynamic to the field. Very different dynamic to the race, lots of corners and makes a little bit more technical. The fa ct a little bit more technical. The fact that the London Marathon had managed to put this on is incredible. And we have to have this course, so it may mean that we have to forget how quickly it goes. It will be going very fast but World Records sub two hours, not really a comparison to make. Well the other big impact on the marathon this year is concerning charities. Last year, the 42,000 runners raised more than £60 million for various causes vital money for the sector. Organisers have tried to bridge that gap with the 2. 6 challenge you might remember from during lockdown, which has raised £11 million. And fun runners can still get their medal by completing the London Marathon remotely. Earlier i spoke to tina fallon and her mumjune theyre raising money and awareness for the charity mind in honour of tinas brother craig who passed away last year theyll be doing their 26 miles in the west midlands. This year we are not going to be running, we are walking. The 26. 2 miles. For my mum. Obviously to the final resting place of my brother. From here, wolverhampton down there is quite an easy kind of route. The London Marathon is a special because of the motivation you get for the big crowds and the new monuments go pass, as could be different doing it this way but what kind of positives you see doing it like this . this way but what kind of positives you see doing it like this . I think that we have had this. We will get to the end because we will get there. Its a big challenge but the end result is that we do something that raises the awareness of what happened and helps one person, 100 people, anybody that is somebody out there, even for people that dont have a lot of family or friends, people like mind, and other charities. Lots of local charities that help with even mental well being, it might not be that you have a diagnosis of depression, but you mightjust have a diagnosis of depression, but you might just be have a diagnosis of depression, but you mightjust be going through bereavement or had a loss of some description or an accident, just that there are people out there that will help you. Obviously thats the reason we are doing in the first place. The fact that you have somebody that this has happened to and you have not been able to help is really hard. So now all we can do is really hard. So now all we can do is help this. Because that feeling does not ever go away. Best of luck to tina and june and to everyone running their virtual marathon on sunday. Holly its going to be at least another year before we possibly get to see the marathon looking like this again. The spirit of the race is going to spread across the uk this year but the elite event will still be a spectacle even in an empty park. The coverage starts on bbc two from 7 oclock. A huge good luck to everybody taking part, a brilliant thing to do. Lets round up some of the days sports stories and. Now all week we have been focusing on racism in football and the stories of people involved in the game at all levels. Chris hughton played for spurs for 13 years, and represented the republic of ireland, before becoming a successful coach and manager. He told us about his experiences during the 70s and 805, and how he feels there could be a lost generation of managers and coaches because of how black players were treated in that era. Racism was accepted in the 70s and 805, raci5m was accepted in the 705 and 805, and there probably would not be two or three weeks that would pass that you would not get some type of racial abu5e that you would not get some type of racial abuse from the terraces at an away game. It would have been heard and heard by others. The fact that nothing was ever done about it, it wa5 nothing was ever done about it, it was a culture that was accepted. On a lot of occasions there was not a 5upport mechanism. You were almost going through it by yourself. I think my personality helped me cope. You became hardened to it, and if you let it affect you and the only one that was going to suffer from it with you. You had to be thick skinned, if you wanted to have a career in the game you had to get on with that. The hardest bit for me to a cce pt on with that. The hardest bit for me to accept even with all the years that ive been in the game is that 5omebody would racially abu5e 5omebody would racially abu5e 5omebody because of the colour of their skin. The thought processes for somebody on the receiving end for somebody on the receiving end for that is incredibly degrading. I speak about the perception of black player5, they were good strikers from a physical player5, player5, they were good strikers from a physical players, but were not what you would see or perceive to be good captain material, or Good Management material. And i think thats a 5tigma that stayed for a while, and really good potential generation of black player5 going into coaching. Ha5 raci5m gone away over that period of years . I dont think so. But at least what you do havei5 think so. But at least what you do have is the dynamics and the changing rooms that are perhaps better and more supportive now to black players. When things become more difficult within a country or in life unfortunately the bad side individuals i think rear5 in life unfortunately the bad side individuals i think rears its ugly head. It certainly feels like summer is well and truly over but that hasnt stopped the english adaptive surfing open which is set to take place at the wave in bristol this weekend. An historic day for the sport as it will be the first time this event is held at an artificial wave centre. 0ur reporter kate grey has been to find out more it may not have the scenic views of the corners coastline, but at the wave of surfing experience has certainly not been compromised. A world class venue where accessibility and inclusivity has been at the forefront of its design. In this weekend it will host some of the countrys best adaptive surfers like tosha davies. Dont have to worry about the sand, and hopefully people will see whats going on here for the competition and think, oh, yeah thats something i might be able to do. What you hope to achieve here this weekend . For me coming here this weekend . For me coming here to build on experience and hopefully catch some really good wave5. Hopefully catch some really good waves. Despite the typically british weather expected, to cover the show will still go on unaffected. It has always been an age problem of creating an event down by the sea. Because of the unpredictable environment. If he were to hold this event down at the ocean this weekend we would have had to of cancelled it. The most important thing is getting perfect waves to really get the best out of the competitors. The sport is on the up 5et the best out of the competitors. The sport is on the up set to make its olympic debut in tokyo 2021 and there is hope that the paralympics could soon follow suit. |j there is hope that the paralympics could soon follow suit. I do feel like its going to have people open their eyes to serving as a sport in their eyes to serving as a sport in the dig up on the back of it now. Its the perfect opportunity and really pushing the surfing alongside it. Come rain or shine surfs up will be guarantee at this event that it could be a Ground Breaking moment for adaptive surfing moving forward. Who needs hawaii . You canju5t go to bristol. Thats all from sportsday. Enjoy your friday night, bye bye. Hello again. Some strong winds at times this weekend, but its going to be the rain thats going to be the bigger issue and thats likely to lead to some flooding. Seeing some rain today acro55 parts of england and wales. Still around overnight tonight, perhaps a bit drier later for western parts of wales, the southwest of england. Some windy weather here, mind you. Somewhat or whether moving into eastern scotland. For western scotland, Northern Ireland a bit chilly with the clear skies. Perhaps some early sunshine here tomorrow, but its cloud and rain on the way for much of the country. The rain sets in with much of england and wales. Still some gaels in the southwest and turns weather acro55 scotland. Somewhat drier for Northern Ireland, and after the rain clears they get some sunshine in the southeast of england. Giving temperatures a bit of a boost. Underneath the rain its a chilly old day, temperatures 11 to 13 celsius. And that rain will be heavy at times, especially over the hills. A couple of amber rain warnings from the met office, one covering wales and the southwest of england, some particularly heavy rain over the high ground. And further north acro55 the northeast of scotland heavy rain here is likely to lead to some flooding.
