Those of the elite level have been speaking out with rugby league calling on the government to keep supporting them. Weve got some great support for us to get us this far, but at this point, it would be a real shame to get this far and then let us die. Also coming up in the programme. Can england make it 2 2, we have news on how they are getting on against the west indies. Hello and welcome along to sportsday. Well, over the last 2a hours, sport at every level has been coming to terms with what the new government Restrictions Mean for their future. Weve heard a lot about the impact on the elite leagues but what about sport at Grassroots Level around the country and as the weather turns and we head into the winter what about indoor sports. A little earlier, i spoke to our Senior Sports news reporter, laura scott, who began by explaining what the Restrictions Mean for indoor sports. So, yesterday the government announced that the rule of six would now apply to adult indoor team sports. There was a bit of confusion about what exactly that mens, and a lot of those ports have sought guidance over the last 2a hours or so guidance over the last 2a hours or so to find out exactly what it means for them, but what is clear is this is very much over 18s playing indoor team sports. They cant do that if they are in groups of more than six. So that will have a big impact on sports like netball, five aside football and basketball. They are going to have to very much reduce their numbers or in some cases, they clearly want to be able to play competitive fixtures at all. There are a series of exemptions, and its important to stress those. So, under 18s informal sports settings, they are ok to continuing groups of more than six. Gyms and pools are allowed to stay open, but clearly they are going to have to be measures put in place to ensure that groups of six dont mix together. Indoor exercise classes are also allowed to continue. That will be significant news for people who enjoy fitness classes. Whats important is that individual groups attending are to be no bigger than six people. Outdoors sports who have played formally and have had got government approval with guidance, they are allowed to continue, same with Outdoor Sports in larger numbers than six. At an informal level, so a kick about in the park oi level, so a kick about in the park or in level, so a kick about in the park orina level, so a kick about in the park or in a sports hall, thatjust has to be kept to groups of six or fewer. So, to be kept to groups of six or fewer. 50, laura, in terms of the reaction today from the likes of netball and basketball who will be hard hit by this. Netball and basketball who will be hardhit by this. There actually hasnt been much, i think because they have been waiting to see from sports england and dc ms what the impact would be. As i said there was a lot of confusion, so they were very keen not to speak too soon before they realised exactly what it meant for them so ive also been contacted meant for them so ive also been co nta cted by meant for them so ive also been contacted by loud people on social media who do things like walking netball and basketball and clearly, they are going to be affected. A lot of the basketball teams are already ina of the basketball teams are already in a financially strange position and this is going to place further strain on them. You mentioned the word financial or finance, this will be the big question, isnt it . How will these sports survive the next six months. Absolutely. And earlier this week, we saw 100 sports and fitness organisations right to the Prime Minister making that exact point that they were going to be put ina point that they were going to be put in a potentially perilous situation because of these announcements and the lack of fans, but also what we have been talking about today, the restrictions from the rule of six. There is clearly a call for some help in the form of financial packages from the government whether thats going to be forthcoming, we just dont know yet. There are going to be some urgent calls from sports, ra ke to be some urgent calls from sports, rake away from top to bottom that they need governments help to see through this very very challenging period. Doris got there. Laura scott there. Well lets talk to someone involved in grassroots sport now who is impacted by these new restrictions. Debbie hallas is the premier team coach at Oldham Netball Club and joins us now. What do the Restrictions Mean for you and the team we heard about that in that report, what will this look like for you over these next coming months . Well, lets just say, my phone hasnt stopped. Obviously, everybody is wanting to know whats happening because it wasnt very clear when it was first announced how it would affect us, and obviously, thats. We still havent got absolute clarity on where the premier league sits in all of this. Which is kind of the highest level that we play out. Obviously, our club does go commit covers the whole of grassroots, and up the momentum as an interim measure, we are training with the seniors and we have had to split into two groups, so we have got a good that are a 16 and 17 some as remaining will be in on the courts, and our older players have not got to train outside. So weve had to struggle to find a local venue. Tomorrow, we are training outside. You mention you arejust at training outside. You mention you are just at the cusp between elite sporting and grassroots, presumably a lot of those athletes are in the pathway, potentially to going to an elite level or may be coming back from it. So how damaging do you think this winter will be for opportunities for athletes . think this winter will be for opportunities for athletes . I think its could be highly damaging. I was seeing covers, many things from former Super League Players and internationals to players coming through the pathway, some may sit within the elite pathway under manchester thunder, so they might have some training indoors. You know, depending on what happens with those, our league wont actually go ahead unless we play indoors, because its just you ahead unless we play indoors, because itsjust you know, the nature of the level were at. We cant have that level playing outdoors. You know, therejust arent the facilities are good enough facilities there to ensure the safety of the players, because they are playing at such a good level. So its very impactful on our level. So its very impactful on our level for sure. Why do you mention that you have all ranges of people involved in different teams . I wonder how important it is for a lot of the women who play netball to have this as an outlet heading into the winter. Absolutely. You can only think, you know, many women could become or are at the moment are isolated. You know, thats a form of release for them. Its the physical side, the mental side and the social side, the mental side and the social side that comes along with team sports. You know, we have done so much to prepare and they had done so much to prepare and they had done so much to prepare and they had done so much to bring back a modified game which the government passed. We put in stringent measures even more so than the governing body put into make sure everybody was as safe as possible. Weve even had to lobby for a couple of weeks, across the country everybody was back for netball but we werent because of local restrictions, so had to battle that. We have been back for two weeks and this has been thrown out thrown at us. So its very frustrating. Its very frustrating for people to understand, and wonder what they are going to do. I even had a messagejust what they are going to do. I even had a message just before what they are going to do. I even had a messagejust before i came on here saying, you know, do i need to joina here saying, you know, do i need to join a gym and said . Im gutted, but you know, i need to try to stay fit. Its just so impactful and, you know, i need to try to stay fit. Itsjust so impactful and, you know for such a good thing like sports to be impacted and organised sports, its just such a shame. Be impacted and organised sports, itsjust such a shame. Debbie, we really appreciate your time. We know its very tough you at the moment, so thank you for your thoughts on it all. No problem, thank you. Well as you can imagine there has been a lot of reaction today from clubs and governing bodies over the new restrictions. The chairman of Rugby Union Club exeter chiefs says theyre losing about a Million Pounds a month and bear in mind that theyre the premiership leaders. Tony rowe says that theres a massive difference between clubs like his and the richest of premier League Football teams. In our league, people have a bit of a misconception that we are similarly funded to premiership football. We are not. Our club has got one of the higher turnovers. We turn over about the £2 million a year. You know, its those sort of its no sort of secret that the majority of premiership clubs struggled to actually make a profit. We are burning up money. There is no secret. We are losing about £1 million a month and that is the same throughout our league. And, you know, we are quite fortunate because we have, you know can actually weather the storm, but for most of the clubs in our league, it is pretty dire really indeed, we just need to get some people back in the stadium. You know, following a statement yesterday by the Prime Minister, its not going to happen until next year. Well, in rugby league, the ceo of the rfl feels that fans couldve have been allowed back into grounds from october the 1st. Hes been speaking to our Sports Editor dan roan. Our clubs ourclubs are our clubs are relying on particulars coming through the turnstiles. Thats what our Business Plan depends upon and that is the reinvestment back into the communities. Without that, everything is affected. Do you think fa ns everything is affected. Do you think fans could have been phased back information is next month safely . do, ido, information is next month safely . do, i do, and i can look across and fio do, i do, and i can look across and no its not quite apples for oranges, but i can look across and see the socially distanced crowds that they are using at this moment in time. I think its very strong messaging that comes out across the airwaves when you see the way its done. Its important that we know we are on a journey and it just done. Its important that we know we are on a journey and itjust seems to have started at this moment in time. What would be your message to the government right now in terms of the government right now in terms of the possibility of emergency funding . In terms of how big a club we are, within the uk economy, we are talking about £16 billion, 600,000 jobs, thats a pretty big machine. The government has certainly recognised other Industry Sectors and recognise the fact that they need support, well, our industry does too. There is great support for us to get us this far at this point. It would be a real shame to get us this far and then let us die. The English Football League chairman rick parry says the league is deeply frustrated after plans to allow some fans to return to matches were put on hold. We have a majorfinancial challenge. We had been saying all along that the maximum financial hold for us is 250 million. That was on the assumption that we dont have any fans this season. So, whats happened with yesterdays announcements, its pushed us more towards the boundary of that. It hasnt created an additional hole, so its not a case of panic, its a case of trying to stay measured. But absolutely puts are really clear focus on needing that Financial Rescue package very very quickly. The one thing we do have out of yesterday is clarity. We now know that we have got a problem that, you know, the very least for the next six months. So its a big problem. We have been working tirelessly and continue to work tirelessly on a succession of alternatives for rescue packages. We havent got all oui rescue packages. We havent got all our eggs rescue packages. We havent got all oureggs in rescue packages. We havent got all our eggs in one basket and the focus is on coming up with something concrete, really very very quickly. Well lots of fans here in the uk have been watching on at some leagues around europe welcoming back supporters. In germany last weekend, some of the top bundesliga teams had a small percentage of fans back in their stadiums. These look like pictures from another time, another world. In fa ct, another time, another world. In fact, they were from last weekend in germany. While the boats got over the door in britain, over there, the sta nce the door in britain, over there, the stance and terraces are being speckled with supporters. Six of the nine opening bundesliga fixtures had fa ns nine opening bundesliga fixtures had fans at them, occupied between 10 and a quarter of the possible capacity. They went to a match in lives big leipzig. Capacity. They went to a match in lives big leipzig. They were spaced out, there was a lot of space between them, clapping, stomping, shouting, but there wasnt the same vibe you usually have with these matches when the stadium is almost full orfull. I think a lot matches when the stadium is almost full or full. I think a lot of people got used to it right away. They were just excited to be there. A lot of energy there. There are strict rules, masks to be worn, allocated space and no beer on the grounds. Events in britain had similar restrictions, the difference perhaps is the infection rate. Germanys is much lower than the uks, but allowing fans in isnt without controversy. Even with precautions, itsjust, you cant make an event of that size perfectly safe. And so, you know, this is a consta nt safe. And so, you know, this is a constant debate and something that is being reevaluated as they see what has happened in germany in terms of coronavirus infections. And it seems infection rates arent the only issue here. In belgium as well as in the netherlands and france, the rate is higher than the uk, but supporters have been in stadiums. A process that the belgians began back injune. It has been a work of intensive work of exchange with all who were involved in this, politicians, police, thats why we are having our fa ns police, thats why we are having our fans in the stadiums. You know, its a week to week thing, if something happens next week, and we cannot foresee that we will have fans and two weeks. This is what passes for pre match ritual now, munich fans getting tested before travelling to the super cup final, they go despite warnings and knowing risks. The gates may be open, but the world outside remains very different. Patrick geary, bbc news. Lets round up some of the days other football lines for you and. Wolves have signed the portugal defender Nelson Semedo from barcelona, in a deal that could make him their record signing. Theyre paying an initial 28 Million Pounds, which would rise to 37 million
