you may have recognised the pictures used at the start of that report. they were of the wildfires in australia in 2019 — the worst bushfire season on record. dozens of people died, more than ten million hectares of land burned and over a billion animals are estimated to have died, with many species pushed close to extinction. professor lesley hughes is from the australia climate council. the report released a few weeks ago had one little silver lining, which is it made it very clear that if we reduce emissions rapidly and deeply within the next few years, and certainly before 2030, we have a chance of leveling off global temperatures by the middle of the century. 720 to 30 years time, in the lifetimes of us, and to then move towards a safer operating space for humanity —— so, 20 to 30 years.
