Closing six months after the billion dollar large. Quibi is calling a day. 12 days until us president ial election and theres three big stories in america but we are going to turn to. It is them over the senators and the judiciary to turn to. It is them over the senators and Thejudiciary Committee approved Amy Kony Barrett for the Supreme Court. Mr chairman. Five. Votes are 12 yeas, ten no votes. The nomination will be reported favourably to the floor with a unanimous vote. Democrats for a boycott of the vote and call the process a sham because the sticky play so close to the us election and the lead democrat in the senate went on the attack afterwards. The nomination of Amy Connie Barrett is the most illegitimate process i have ever witnessed in the senate. And her potential confirmation will have dire, dire consequences for the senate, for the Supreme Court, and oui senate, for the Supreme Court, and our entire country for generations to come. The full vote is in the senate on monday. It looks certain that the republicans have the numbers. Assuming they do, conservatives will hold a 6 3 majority in the Supreme Court. Lets bring in our western correspondent who has been following all of this. Im to understand what part of the process occui im to understand what part of the process occur today, it was there any further debate or just about . The vote is what happened today. So the committee has to vote the Judiciary Committee where theres 12 republicans and ten democrats and it happened today even though the democrats boycotted it. Theres only ten of them there so even if they all voted against it would have gone through. Whats left is this final vote and the full senate on monday which will also go ahead barring any last minute upsets which is unlikely to happen. They re last minute upsets which is unlikely to happen. Theyre the republicans have a 53 47 advantage of very likely to be voting to confirm judge Amy Connie Barrett before the election. The lead democrat in the senate theres having incredibly upset talking about the consequences of this process in dramatic terms. What is the basis for the democrats making those kind of claims . The democrats are extremely paying to. Because in 2016 the republicans blocked the nomination of president obamas nominate Merrick Garland for ten whole months. In this case theyre confirming Amy Connie Barrett within just 16 days, this is the fastest Supreme Court nominee has ever been confirmed. The average time so far it has been about 56 days. The democrats now calling this a decades long attempt to skew the court to the right and so this is the most rush, illegitimate process that has ever happened in this will have long lasting ramifications for generations to come. Lets imagine the focus and look sick at will on monday, the following week we have the election. Any dispute around the election with amy the emplacement Supreme Court in time to be involved in ruling on those disputes . The short answer is yes. This is something that worries democrats because she refused to say if she will recuse herself at the election is contested and it appears before the Supreme Court and basically presented before the night Supreme Court justices. They presented before the night Supreme Courtjustices. They fear presented before the night Supreme Court justices. They fear that this will be President Trump is like plan if he continues to intends to contest the election and will have the court and his advantage us with the court and his advantage us with the reasons democrats are protesting so the reasons democrats are protesting so strongly. Unfortunately its a losing battle for them. Theres later on the first of the three stories from the us. Heres the second. The Supreme Court nomination is likely to feature on President Trump andjoe is likely to feature on President Trump and joe biden when they meet later on for the final president ial debate. In nashville and this time theres new rules to avoid that messy first encounter. Heres barbara looking ahead to this one. First gallic debate was dominated by amr first gallic debate was dominated by a mrtrumps and first gallic debate was dominated by a mr trumps and interruptions. The question is. Will you shut up, man . The candidates barred from afar and separate town halls because the president caught the coronavirus. The final showdown there are new rules. Each man public mike will be cut off a part of the time so his rival can speak without being heckled. President trump is still down in the polls and playing defence and states he won last time. He has been claiming the debate will be ready but needs it to recharge his chances of victory and change the conversation about his botched handling of the pandemic. He will not be changing any mines here. Handling of the pandemic. He will not be changing any mines harem has decimated our business. Daniel and amys barb is giving top ratings of the music scene but silencing the stage. I think anybody but he would be a good start. Whether or not im a huge fan ofjoe biden is neither here nor there but i cant show any support over a man who has selfishly chosen his ego and his business over the well being of my fellow countrymen. Heres what to watch for when natural lights up for the big event. President trump is been told to tone it down and stay on message. Joe biden needs to show that he can stand up to mr trump, hes expecting a tax on family. Attacks. Many americans were annoyed by the incoherence of the debate but they may tune in to watch the mute button in action. And if they do the debate is 90 minutes long, it will covered many topics. Lets speak to gary who is with us from nashville. Lots of attention on the debate rules and who is playing the referee best as we go into this. Help us understand how the commission is trying to exert some control on the situation. But there trying to do is try and prevent that shouting match of the last debate that it clearly degenerated into a. In concrete terms of the top of each 15 minute segment its candidate will get there two minutes, and other candidates microphone will be muted. That does not mean the other candidate is out of the room, still on the stage ill be at distance from one another. It does not stop donald trump or indeed joe biden if it so wishes to start yelling. That could have become the president is unpredictable any circumstances we will see what kind of difference it makes. We are trying to avoid the kind of mess of last time were effectively after about ten minutes everyone had a headache. Be nesting ofjoe biden, not heard a great deal from headache. Be nesting ofjoe biden, not heard a great dealfrom him in the last couple of weeks. Been very, very quiet. This is an interesting strategy. He significantly ahead in the national polls, his margins and the national polls, his margins and the battle grounds are smaller but they have staged to the next day largely consistent. The strategy of careful conservative small seat strategy not to blow your lead. Clearly preparing a lot for this debate as well. If the president had to change the game tonight, his tasks night is to get out of this with a draw. That will help him maintain his current course, no gaps 01 mess ups maintain his current course, no gaps or mess ups and dont get into too many difficult policy debates. After all this whole election has been a policy free zone. And im sure im not the only one just wondering what its like to be in a president ial debate during covid. Some of the theatre of it all is being restrained presumably. Its all very careful in lockdown. The numbers are enormous to reduce, you can see probably here on my wrist this is the little band we have to go and get to confirm that we have been can we have had a negative test before we have had a negative test before we go anywhere near the lockdown zone. Numbers are very small and a lot of restriction. Nothing like the razzmatazz you would normally get around this event. Much scaled down. In many ways this was a made for television event. Some of the viewing figures are up with the super bowl or close to the super bowl before these kinds of things. Not Many Americans will change their minds asa not Many Americans will change their minds as a result but dont forget its a tiny number of americans the end of deciding these elections anyway. And gary as part of our team bring you full coverage of that president ial debate in a few hours time. A third story from the us to wa nt to time. A third story from the us to want to tell you about. Yesterday evening the director of Us National Intelligence accused iran and russia of interfering in the president ial election. We have confirmed that some Voter Registration information has been obtained by iran and separately by russia. This data can be used by foreign actors to attempt to communicate false information to registered voters that they hope will cause confusion so chaos and undermined your confidence in american apostasy. American democracy. If iran sending spoofed e mails designed to voters and insight social unrest and damage President Trump. The emails were addressed to registered democratic voters in several states including three battlegrounds. One of them being florida. Local media tell us this was the message plus this threat. Emails claimed to be from a far right group called the proud boys. But theres evidence the emails came from somwhere else. Hackers tried to cover their tracks, intelligence and Security Officials the us also claims iran distributed a fake video which reportedly showed donald trump and the proud boys logo. Heres the Us National Intelligence director again. Iran is distributing other content to include a video that implies that individuals could cast fraudulent ballots. Even from overseas. This video, and any claims about such allegedly fraudulent ballots are not true. Both iran and russia deny the claims. Iranian Foreign Ministry called it repetitive, baseless and false claims. And goes on as we have said before, it makes no difference for iran who wins the us election. And this was the message from russia. The accusations come every day, all of them have no grounds, they are not based on anything. Most likely, it is a tribute to internal political processes linked to the upcoming election. Us officials havent said how russia and iran alllegedly obtained the data. According to the National Conference of state legislatures in many states voter data is available on request. Though each state has different requirements on who can request it and how much is available. We also dont know what iran and russias intentions might be. The New York Times there was no indication that any election result tallies were changed or that information about who is registered to vote was altered, either of which could affect the outcome of voting that has already begun across the united states. Us officials insist the election hasnt been compromised. Heres fbi director christopher wray. You should be confident of that your vote counts. Early, unverified claims to the contrary should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism. We encourage everyone to seek election and voting information from reliable sources, namely your state election officials. And to be thoughtful, careful and discerning consumers thoughtful, careful and discerning consumers of information online. Gary 0donoghue again. We took an awful lot about russia interfering in american politics, not so much about iran. Know and indeed theres been some word from other administrations and initiation members about other countries theyre keeping members about other countries they re keeping an members about other countries theyre keeping an eye on as well. China has been mentioned, other countries unnamed that they say are attempting to metal in this election. You will remember last time the Intelligence Community here put together a huge dossier on of the attempts at russia they said would interfere in election. Unanimous verdict of 16 or 17 Us Intelligence agencies came together and presented that after the election. Here they are moving much faster. These issues around those e mails you mentioned are threatening a rather sort of comically blunt threatening e mails sent out supposedly by white supremacist groups. The only really emerged on tuesday, get the fbi saying they know he did it. I wednesday evening. They try to get ahead of the game here and perhaps a americans before the vote what might be happening. You were in america, im not obviously. It feels looking for before that American Voters have got a lot of misinformation coming their way from a lot of different sources around. The very process of voting and process of having an election, perhaps that would not have been exposed to five or ten yea rs have been exposed to five or ten years ago. Is also worth bearing in mind that every state in this country runs the election, the all run their own and do it in their own rules and a lot of them change the rules and a lot of them change the rules this time around to make mail in votes, early voting in person, all of that sort of thing more possible. Easierfor people and isa more possible. Easierfor people and is a plethora of different rules that govern how you do it. And theres new ones so people are having to navigate that system and thats before you deal with any of the misinformation coming through the misinformation coming through the myriad channels of social media that people are bombarded with nowadays. Thank you for a second time. To nigeria where president Muhammadu Buhari hasjust been addressing the nation, after peaceful protests against Police Brutality turned deadly this week. Heres some of what he said. Remember, this government also has an obligation to protect lives and property use. Everyone has the right to go about their daily businesses. Freely and take from acts of violence. Earlier, a spokesperson for president Muhammadu Buhari tweeted it is not president buharis desire to see any earlier in the day, the president chaired a National Security Council Meeting in abuja. The heads of police and other security agencies were there. Nigerias Vice President has promised justice for people who were shot during protests. Butjustice will involve the government saying who fired the shots. And on that weve heard nothing. Amnesty International Says the Security Forces killed at least 12 people on tuesday. The Nigerian Army denies any involvement. In a series of tweets, Vice President yemi 0shin ba joe says his heart goes out to all the victims of the lekki shootings. He goes on i spoke to some of those in hospital. The pain of these terrible events is palpable in our towns and cities, and some losses are irreplaceable, but we can and will getjustice while many questions remain about tuesday reports of vandalism and violence continue to come in from lagos thats despite a strict curfew being in place. This incident is getting a lot of attention the high court in lagos island, which is the citys oldest neighbourhood, was set on fire. Residents said the building was looted by vandals who took goods that had been confiscated by the court. Ajoke ulohotse was there. This is what is left of the high court in legos island lagos island. Cutting away precious documents, photocopiers and even judges weeks. Eyewitnesses have told us they have seen some of these looters parroting the streets with lawyers weeks you after cutting the precious property in the building. Fire was such to have started just at the Security Point rate tartt car was torched at about 2pm and spread to this building at about seven. This building is very crucial to justice in lagos. This is where people have cases of robbery and, kidnapping in this is where these cases are held. A Food Warehouse in lagos hs also been looted. And these pictures are also from lagos. That smoke is billowing from a prison which was set on fire. There were also reports of gunshots. A bbc reporter who went to the scene says the situation is now calm. Says the situation is now and local media is reporting the round the clock lagos curfew may soon be lifted. This is a report from the royal times which says that could happen on friday to allow residents to restock Food Supplies and other essential items. The response to the peaceful protests has prompted international condemnation. Nigerian writer chima manda Ngozi Adichie has written a piece for the New York Times accusing the government of murdering its citizens. She writes. Next were going to hear from damilola banjo who was part of the bbc team live at the scene when soldiers started shooting at the protesters on tuesday. She spoke to Bbc World Service radio. The military came in and they were shooting. They surrounded the protesters and kept them in one location and created a barricade around them. They kept shooting them, the coordinators of the protests d id them, the coordinators of the protests did ask the protesters to sit on the ground and remain peaceful. They did with the coordinators asked them, sat on the floor and waving their flags and sing at their protest song but that did not deter the soldiers who were on ground and kept shooting for about 20 minutes they continued shooting sporadically. The government have come out, the military have come out to say that they have no hands in the assault that happened on tuesday. But that isa that happened on tuesday. But that is a fat lie. It was the soldiers, i saw them. It was the soldiers who we re saw them. It was the soldiers who were there that night on tuesday. And of course theres been videos that have emerged from social media and we could see from the uniform that this were not mobile police officers, these were soldiers. The protests have been going on for the past two weeks. They began over a Notorious Police unit the special anti robbery squad also known as sars which has been accused of Human Rights Violations including torture and extra judicial killings. President buhari dissolved the police unit last week but demonstrations continued, calling for more changes in the Security Forces and wider reforms against corruption. Thats because there have been promises of reforms many times before. Well next we can hear from the Police Commissioner who founded sars. I always tell my wife i am sad to. She says why are you sad . I say what i created with good purpose and good direction has been turned into banditry now. Its not the same as i established. Now you are disowning sars . Something you created in your disowning it now . Ijust own it. Assaulting people, hurting people unnecessarily. That was not the conduct. Ajoke ulohotse, lagos extra net to extranet to hear the president and Vice President talk about the need for justice Vice President talk about the need forjustice and what happened on tuesday night but surely they could very easily find out what happened. Totally. Many people would expect that. The president will be able to at least give them answers to many questions asked on social media or the shot on tuesday night. Having waited for 1h days to hear from the president is quite shocking that we did not get any answers to those questions. However the governor an interview today said that footage from surveillance cameras at the total points is untapped and many thought it would be nice to find out what happened that night, what was the true story of what happened at that place that night and who authorised the shootings at that place . But sadly many nigerians to docket those answers. While they wait for answers, they determined to keep going on the streets despite the risk and the curfew . Totally. Yesterday i was of the total point with the protesters were shot and the protesters will still at that point. Demanding justice and they wa nt point. Demanding justice and they want reforms in the education sector, the Health Sector and said they will not be deterred. If the government are sending the Nigerian Army, the police come to the Security Forces are ordering them to shoot them down. I will not stop protesting and demanding for reforms in many of the sectors of the country. Many of them would like and and to the bad governance and they said they will not stop until they get the real change that they deserve. And what is the atmosphere like in lagos as we approach the end of this week because of it was calmer than yesterday. Work on that yesterday, i saw yesterday was a lot of violence. Looting and assault, ongoing. Today we have had the jailbreakfrom ongoing. Today we have had the jailbreak from one of the correctional centres in the country and thankfully that was foiled by men of the military, the Nigerian Army and the police. And also we have heard of massive looting as one of the warehouses where they were supposed to reach stock. They believe that should have been headed out to vulnerable citizens way back six months ago when the state was on lockdown. The government is also said that that was recently just handed over to them by the private sector and that meant that continuous protests had stopped doing distribution, many nigerians did that amazingly. The situation todayis did that amazingly. The situation today is more calm than what we saw yesterday. Thank you very much indeed. Life in lagos. Indebted to her and all of our ppc africa colleagues. Its a story that will continue because the three hearing the fury of the world happened on tuesday and the desire for change appears to be growing. Not diminishing by the day. Much of a background of the story and indeed all the stories recover earlier this half hour fight bbc a complex news. After the break will be back to talk about breaks and fishing among other things. Brexit. Hello there. Today we had a brief rest bite from this very unsettled weather and there was even some sunshine step across many parts of the country it was a fine autumn scene as well. The weather is changing again and for the foreseeable future looks very u nsettled. Foreseeable future looks very unsettled. All of the weather coming in from the atlantic and one vendor cloud followed by another bed of cloud followed by another bed of cloud somewhat windy weather. First area of cloud beginning to arrive close to our shores later on this evening. Bringing some rain overnight into Northern Ireland later in the night into into western scotland. Scooping up ahead of that person of ray heading into the south and east of england for a while. The cloud will tend to increase from the west. Lowest temperatures quite early into the night and three or 4 degrees across eastern areas before the cloud arrives. The rain that we have gotte n the cloud arrives. The rain that we have gotten Northern Ireland will not last long in the morning and will see patchy rent run eastwards across scotland. Heavier rain in the morning of the hills of northwest england and perhaps into wales three because later in the afternoon as he heads for the into Eastern England. Behind it we have some sunshine. Showers many for western scotland and Northern Ireland and to purchase here struggling to around 11 degrees. 0ver here struggling to around 11 degrees. Over the weekend very until the weather continuous and stronger winds particularly on saturday but ina band winds particularly on saturday but in a band of rain followed again by sunshine and showers. Heres the bed of rain got on saturday, and if dry start to the midlands in Eastern England with some sunshine. The ring perceives words but falling by sunshine and showers on scotland and Northern Ireland. Windy day cussing 60 mph through the irish sea and western scotland for a while. Try until late in the day and temperatures could reach 70 degrees. That ring will arrive by the evening in these areas and the remaining driving force sits close to the northwest of the uk. The strongest winds on sunday it would have showers or longer spells of rain. So that it parts of england and wales the winds will be a strong away from the winds will be a strong away from the northwest with the air is cooler such a purchase will be lower and more unsettled weather to come as we head into next week. Hello, im ros atkins this is 0utside source. President trumps one step closer to having his third justice confirmed on the Supreme Court. The votes are 12 yays, ten no votes. The nomination will be reported favourably to the floor, with a unanimous vote. Shes got through the committee, now Amy Coney Barretts nomination gets voted on by the full senate within days, and its almost certain to pass. Arson, unrest and destruction continues in lagos despite a curfew, following tuesdays shooting of protesters in nigerias biggest city. The uk increases Financial Support for businesses hit by coronavirus with the government agreeing to pay up to half of workers wages. Polands Top Court Rules to introduce an almost total ban on abortion well be live at a protest in warsaw. And as brexit talks get underway again well look at why fishing has become the number one obstacle to a deal. We are an island nation with sea all around us and we have the best fishing grounds, and europe has taken advantage of that for a0 years. Of all the continents in the world, europe is seeing by far the worst increases in daily cornavirus cases. As you can see in these graphs, just over a month ago asia which is at the top was seeing the worst number of daily cases, driven in large part by the outbreak in india. But in recent weeks europe has become the hotspot. France is seeing the most new cases and is currently atjust over 250 cases per 100,000 people. A few minutes ago, Health Authorities announced over a0 , 000 confirmed covid cases in the last 2a hours, the highest number to date. The french Prime Minister has announced new restrictions for another 38 regions. From midnight on friday, 46 Million People are liable to fines if they leave home without a valid reason between 9pm and 6am. Lucy williamson was listening to the announcement. He was talking aboutjust how much under pressure the Health System here is. There were four regions, he said, where more than half the icu beds were now occupied by covid patients. There was a doctor who came on from a big hospital in paris who said that half the icu patients were under 60. There was a real threat of the Health System struggling. I thinkjean castex was really, you know, painting this picture of a Health Service under great pressure, and urging the country very strenuously to pull together to try and avoid what he says would be a much more dramatic situation much tougher measures would have to come in. We do have some time left to avoid it, he said, but we dont have long. Spain is also struggling to contain a major outbreak, seeing in the region of 200 cases per 100,000 people. Spains Health Minister has warned of more drastic restrictions in the country, and yesterday spain became the first european country to record more than one million coronavirus cases. This is prague in the Czech Republic where a new lockdown has come into force. The government is warning that the Hospital System will collapse within weeks unless harsh measures are taken now. Ireland too is back in lockdown. This was the scene in dublin during what would normally be morning rush hour. Non essential businesses have had to close, although schools are being kept open. In belgium, the foreign minister Sophie Wilmes has been taken into intensive care, five days after tweeting that she had coronavirus. Belgium has seen a major rise in people testing positive for covid 19 and it currently has the worst infection rate in western europe. 0ur europe correspondent, gavin lee is in liege. In this Testing Centre in liege, people have been queueing from five oclock this morning to get here on foot and by car, and, every week, they are doubling the number of people that are coming. Every hour, they are seeing about 250 people. Jerome is in charge here. Translation i really think the situation is close to catastrophe. Hospitals are almost swamped. Some already are. And as for testing, the demand is exploding, and so are positive cases. It feels like were on a cliff edge. One in three tests are now coming back positive. Translation last wednesday, i had 9 positivity. Thursday, 15 and friday, 30 . In 72 hours, it is incredible how positive cases went up. It is worse than in march. We are really feeling the second wave. The uk government has announced billions of pounds of extra help businesses and workers whove been hit by coronavirus restrictions. The scheme doubles the amount of support previously available to companies. Heres the chancellor of the exchequer. This is our plan. A plan forjobs, for businesses, for the regions, for our economy, for the country. A plan to support the british people. Thejob support programme will replace the current furlough scheme, which ends this month. Employers will now have to pay a minimum of 20 of a workers wages, before Government Support kicks in. The government originally proposed that 20 figure was going to be higher, at 55 . And taxpayer support will now fund 62 of pay for hours not worked, for businesses where demand is so low staff arent coming in. And 150,000 grants will also be available for hotels, restaurants and b bs. The grants are available to hospitality businesses in tier 2 areas of england including london and birmingham. Firms there are still able to open, but many have so few customers they say theyd actually better off if theyd been put into tier 3 and forced to close. Heres the reaction from one of those tier 3 areas this is the mayor of manchester. You know, why has it taken london to go into tier 2 for tier 2 support to become a National Issue . I mean, thats the question, isnt it, that everyone has to answer . Notjust the government, but the country needs to answer that. There were other questions too about the way these measures have evolved. They came up at the downing street press co nfe re nce one of them from our political editor, laura kuenssberg. The problems with the first version of yourjobs scheme that you have rewritten today were obvious to many people in industry from the start. Why do you keep keep underestimating the help that people really need . I think its a perfectly fair question to ask about the timing of this. When you think back to the summer when we designed the job support scheme in conjunction with business and business groups and unions, i think at that point, we were looking forward to the economy reopening and restrictions being lifted. What we have seen in the last, especially last four or five weeks, is as these new restrictions have been put in place, the impact they are having on the ground has been highly significant, particularly to businesses in the hospitality sector, particularly in these tier 2 areas, and the cumulative weight of all of these new restrictions has really, if you speak to anyone in the industry, they are seeing it in their numbers quite significantly over the past few weeks. Here are the latest coronavirus numbers. The uk recorded 21,2112 new cases of covid 19 in the past 2a hours. Thats down on yesterdays figure of more than 26,000. There were 189 deaths recorded, slighly lower than the number of the day before. Alert levels are being raised in more areas of england. Two cities in the midlands and a town near london will move into tier 2 on saturday. Thats the high alert level where mixing of households isnt allowed. Heres our political correspondentjess parker. We correspondent jess parker. Have we correspondentjess parker. Have seen a flurry of di going we have seen a flurry of discussion going on between government and local area. Some of those talks have gone smoothly but others, of course, the row with Greater Manchester well documented over recent days. Matt hancock, the health secretary, announcing moving in to tier 2 from saturday, stoke, coventry and slough, and he said particularly concerning the cases amongst the over 605. What that means for england, over 29 Million People are now living in the top two tiers of restrictions, a huge proportion of the population. More information on the population. More information on the bbc news app and bbc news website. Lets turn now to ghi5laine maxwell the british socialite, who is facing charges in the us of trafficking underage girls for sex. Earlier today, transcripts of a deposition she made in an earlier court case were made public and they detail her relationship with the convicted paedophilejeffrey epstein, who you may remember committed suicide in prison. This is the cover page of ghi5laine maxwells 465 page deposition. In it she says she never saw any inappropriate underage activities with jeffrey ever. It also includes que5tion5 about miss maxwells knowledge of britains prince andrew. M5 maxwell had long fought to keep the testimony secret. Lets get some background. Ghi5laine maxwell is the associate and ex girlfriend of jeffrey epstein. She will go on trial in a criminal ca5e next year and has pleaded not guilty. This is m5 maxwell shes facing 5ix charges among them, recruiting and grooming girls this man you can see in this photo with her jeffrey epstein, the disgraced financier who died last year while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges. M5 maxwell has so far always denied any involvement in or knowledge of her late friends alleged sexual misconduct. Ghi5laine maxwell is also a friend of prince andrew. In this bbc interview the duke of york said he had last met m5 maxwell in 2019, before epstein was arrested on sex trafficking charges. However, he said they did not discu55 mr epstein and that he too had no knowledge of mr ep5tein5 alleged sexual misconduct. But questions remain about this photo. How did we come to see this document and who decided it should be made public . This was a year is a long fight by the miami herald to publish this expo5e intojeffrey epstein that led to so much more scrutiny on this alleged sex trafficking ring. Basically, maxwells attorneys argued that this would prejudice her upcoming trial because it would put an unflattering picture on her because of the certain que5tion5 that she was asked in this deposition. Ultimately, thejudge decided that this was in the public i nte re5t, decided that this was in the public interest, that it wouldnt prejudice her criminal trial. After wrangling as late as last night, both parties going back and forth trying to decide what would be blacked out or redacted from the document, after all of that black and forth back and forth, it was released this morning. Still relevant to the criminal trial of maxwell. Can we expect this kind of wrangling in the coming months between now and when the trial actually happens . This is ju5t the trial actually happens . This is just one of the documents that has been up for discussion, up for illegal fights to be released. Been up for discussion, up for illegalfight5 to be released. And it is clear why. Besides the criminal trial, prosecutors are using this deposition to say that maxwell perjured herself. But there i5 maxwell perjured herself. But there is so much intrigue around how this alleged scheme was able to go on for so long and who was involved, the wealthy and powerful that have been accused of being part of this picture. And so for example, this deposition names a few people. 0ther peoples names are redacted. I think as we go on and see more documents relea5ed, as we go on and see more documents released, it is only going to continue this legal fight right up until the criminal trial in july. Thank you very much indeed. Quibi is closing six months after its billion dollar launch the short video service. It is being shutdown. People in a fishing town in ireland have been looking for a dolphin. The tourist industry is built up around the famous dolphin, but now it is missing. 0ur ireland correspondent has more. It was the times lighthouse keeper who was first to spot the solitary dolphin at the mouth of Dingle Harbour in 1983. In the years that followed, the dolphin became a major draw for touri5ts, a5 dolphin became a major draw for touri5ts, as people flocked to see the friendly dolphin who seemed to enjoy the friendly interaction. The boat5 enjoy the friendly interaction. The boats were initially 5mall fi5hing boat5. Then the guys developed and put new vessels and invested heavily, and he has been a huge boost and a vital part of the touri5m. Boost and a vital part of the tourism. Generations have grown up and all that they ever knew was that the dolphin lived in the harbour. So generous, and so playful, and for that to be gone, it is like a light hasjust gone out. Since the disappearance a week ago, the town has taken part in a full scale search with boat5, diver5 and sonar, but without success. The only thing that we ever got out of this was the company, and now he hasjust disappeared the same way that he came. And, you know, the choice was a lwa y5 came. And, you know, the choice was always his. There are various theories a5 always his. Amy coney barratt has taken a step closer to a seat on the Supreme Court, her nomination has been approved by the senate Judiciary Committee. Every week we produce a video for the bbc news website that looks in depth at one of the main stories of the week. This week were looking at a major issue in the uk eu trade talks. Fishing is a relatively small industry in the uk but its always been central to brexit. It connects to notions of sovereignty and fairness. It connects to fierce passion on both sides. And the uks trade negotiators know there are clear expectations. We have the best fishing and europe has taken advantage of that for a0 yea rs, has taken advantage of that for a0 years, and we want to take that back. The focus on fishing is constant in the brexit process. And the idea that a country should decide who fishes in its waters has a persuasive logic. As this english fisherman puts it. We are an island nation, profit from the seas. The uk government is in synch with that saying it will decide who fishes in our waters and on what terms. But what sounds simple is proving farfrom it. Not least because the uk helped create the situation it now wants to change. Lets start with deals done in the 705 by the uk and its neighbours. Theyre the basis of the quota system that the eu uses. This is how it works. Heres the uks exclusive Economic Zone marked in red. But if youre in the eu its not exclusive everyones zones are treated as a single shared resource. Each country gets a quota based on theirfishing catches in the 705. And individualfishermen or companies can then own a part of that National Quota and that allows them to fish a certain amount. Thats the system. Then in the 905, some fishing rights changed, some quotas lost value and some english fishermen sold their quotas to foreign businesses. They voluntarily gave up their right to fish in their own waters. And in time, those quotas gained value. The bbc found that by 2019, over half of the value of englands fishing quota was controlled by vessels in Foreign Ownership. The same was true in wales. Though in scotland, the figure is much lower. So because of the eu quota system, because of Foreign Ownership both of which the uk agreed to europes boats have been operating in uk waters for years. And from a european perspective, there are good arguments for this to continue. The first is that a way of life is at stake. If we cant enter, it is the end of our profession. No circumstances, will our fishermen be sacrificed to brexit. Take herring for example. European fish Companies Argue either they catch it and sell it or. English people have to learn to eat herring, a lot of it. But for all the european arguments brexit is a reality. The uk is opting out of the eus quota system. And we are heading for an inevitable reset on fishing. Some argue the eu has yet to accept this. Analyst mujta ba rahman says the eu position on fish is absurd. And perhaps the point is that fishing, despite being a relatively small industry, is in fact about everything. Its about the uks sense of sovereignty, its about brexiteers keeping promises, its about the eu demonstrating its collective strength. And one last thing on that here are the eus Core Principles for brexit negotiations. Look closely and youll read nothing is agreed until everything is agreed. And thats where fishing finds itself part of a far larger conversation about how the uk and the eu interact. Compromises are inevitable, resources will still be shared and that includes, to some degree, the uks fish. Polands top court has ruled that ending the life of a deformed foetus is unconstitutional. This means abortion in poland is now permissable only in cases of rape or incest, or to protect the mothers life. This is the capital warsaw earlier you can see plenty of support for womens right to choose. Poland already has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in europe and opinion polls show a clear majority of poles are against more restrictions. Around 100,000 polish women already seek a termination abroad each year. But some bishops and lay catholic groups pressured the governing law and Justice Party to make it even tougher. But this is what happened when the government tried to get the measure through parliament in 2016. Massive pro choice demonstrations broke out, with tens of thousand of women taking to the streets to block the further restrictions. Thats why a group of mp5 decided to take the task out of the governments hands and ask the court, which is dominated by pro governmentjudges, to rule on the issue. Marta lempart leads the polish womens Strike Movement involved in protests in 2016. Do you intend to have other protests . Do you intend to have other protests . This is what is happening now. We went from the building, ruling party headquarters, to tell them what we think of that. How many people are on the streets, do you think . About 3000. And what do you make of the governments decision to go via the court rather than Via Parliament . I think they are afraid of us, basically. And i think it shows what priorities they have. It is 12,000 cases of covid 19 today. And they ban abortion, they try to ban abortion because it is not true that anything happens, legally, because this court is not a court and thejudges because this court is not a court and the judges there are not appointed illegally, so as for the law, nothing changes. Actual things can happen with the doctors with todays announcement, with government media and there is the court, but we already are in contact with the doctors who say that they treat todays announcement by the person who is supposed to be leading the Constitutional Court as an announcement, not as a force of law. But hold on, sorry to interrupt but if you believe in the rule of law in poland, surely if your Constitutional Court says something, whether you agree with it or not, it is important to follow that rule in . No, it is not a Constitutional Court. Three people who werent there today are notjudges. They we re there today are notjudges. They were not appointed illegally. And the person heading this so called court was not appointed illegally. So, no, it is nota court was not appointed illegally. So, no, it is not a Constitutional Court. Legally. So, no, it is not a Constitutional Court. Legally. Beyond that, what routes are available to you to try and reverse that . We support the doctors who already told us that they declare that they are not willing to go along with this announcement. And they will perform abortions, because the law hasnt changed. And we are going to the European Commission to start an infringement procedure in poland for attempting to legalise torture is in poland to go to the European Court ofjustice against poland to go to the European Court of justice against poland poland to go to the European Court ofjustice against poland because of that. And we will support each and every individual case against a doctor that will try to lie that this kind of abortion is banned in poland, because it is not. |j this kind of abortion is banned in poland, because it is not. I am interested that you are turning to the European Commission because they are already clashing with poland over issues. Do you have faith in the European Union is able to exert enough pressure on this issue . |j the European Union is able to exert enough pressure on this issue . I am a european citizen and i want to win that. They have the duty to protect me. European institutions have the duty to protect me, and i demand them to do so. Thank you very much indeed for speaking first from the streets of warsaw as people turn out to protest that decision. The mobile streaming Service Quibi has announced it will close, after operating forjust six months. Quibi offered what it called snackable media, programmes of 10 minutes or less. And despite 1. 8 billion of investment by its launch in april, and hollywood stars appearing in some of its shows, the service failed to gain enough subscribers. In fact, according to the Data Research company ka ntar, quibi only had 710,000 subscriber households by the end of last month. In an open letter the company said. Heres our north america tech reporter James Clayton on how those two factors put an end to quibi. I think the idea for quibi isnt a bad one. Lots of people watch content from their mobile phones, so why not create from their mobile phones . They did it vertically, rather than horizontally. They launched in the middle of a pandemic, and i think there is the idea that maybe quibi would be used by commuters on the train to catch up by commuters on the train to catch up with content. That didnt happen, obviously, as commuting is way down. When it came to the content itself, there was nothing standout that eve ryo ne there was nothing standout that everyone was talking about that you had to get onto quibi to watch. It was also subsection based sea had to pay for it and it was competing against the likes of youtube, which is free. You have to sit through adverts, but it is free. For all of those reasons, quibi didnt do as well as they thought they would do. But, you know, yesterdays announcements showed that they went just doing badly, they were doing really, really badly. And i think thatis really, really badly. And i think that is the surprising thing to many. It was the new and coming thinkjust six months ago and it is now a dead in the water. And james finishes that remarkable story, really, i think a lot of people have been watching quibi and expecting it to re establish itself. But as we say, either because of lack of demand or because of the pandemic, it is no more after six months and after a lot of money has been spent. You can find that on the Technology Section on the bbc website. Thank you for watching this weeks edition of outside source. We will see you next week. Today we had a brief respite from this very unsettled weather. There was even some sunshine across many parts of the sunshine, and it was a fine autumn scene as well. Then rain on saturday, and it will be sunshine and showers in scotland and Northern Ireland. A windy day, with Gale Force Winds gusting perhaps 60 miles an hour in the irish sea and in western scotland for a while. South england, east anglia it will be dry later in the day and temperatures could reach 17 degrees. That rain will arrive by the evening in these areas and push away overnight. The remaining driving force of the weather, that area of low pressure, sits north in the uk and we will have strongest winds. Elsewhere, there will be some sunshine, showers are more likely to run across southern and western parts of england and into wales. The winds went to be as strong away from the north west, but the air is cooler, so temperatures were below and there is more unsettled weather to come as we head into next week. This is bbc news.
