Hello, im ros atkins, welcome to outside source. Scientists here in london have begun human trials of a revolutionary vaccine against the coronavirus. A team at Imperial College are working at record speed. If it works, the vaccine could be mass produced. It means that we can make the equivalent of 2 million doses in the volume of a litre. Imagine a litre bottle of lemonade, that would have 2 million doses in it. As india reports 16,000 new cases of coronavirus in the past 2a hours, we get exclusive access to an intensive care unit in one of mumbais top hospitals. More than 100,000 people have now died from covid i9 in latin america, with over half of those deaths, in brazil. A Us Appeals Court orders a federal judge to drop the criminal case against President Trumps former National Security adviser, Michael Flynn. There is only one guaranteed way to get out of the coronavirus pandemic and that is a vaccine. And the bbc has been given exclusive access to human trials of a vaccine being developed by scientists at Imperial College in london. Their approach has never been tried before and it uses only a tiny dose. If the trials work, the researchers say they should have enough vaccine available to immunise a0 Million People in the uk by the middle of next year. Heres our medical correspondent, fergus walsh. Coronavirus has transformed all our lives. And although restrictions are easing, theres only one certain way out of the pandemic, one way to protect us all from the virus, to return society to normal, and thats a vaccine. Never has science responded so fast to a Global Health threat. What usually takes years has been done in months. There are now more than 120 coronavirus vaccines in early development. 13 have begun human trials five in china, three in the United States, two in the uk and one each in australia, germany and russia. Well need several to work if theres to be enough doses to protect 7 billion people on the planet. After oxford university, now Imperial College london is the latest to begin trials. Kathy, whos 39, is one of 300 volunteers who will receive the imperial vaccine. Shell get a second booster dose in four weeks. Why did you volunteer . I think it came from not really knowing what i could do to help, and this turned out to be something that i could do, and understanding that its not likely that things will get back to normal until there is a vaccine, so wanting to be part of that progress as well. If the safety trial goes well, a further 6,000 volunteers will be immunised in the autumn. Trials might also need to happen overseas, in virus hotspots, because thats the only way researchers will know for sure if it offers protection. I wouldnt be working on this trial if i didnt feel cautiously optimistic that we will see great immune responses in our participants, but theres still a long way to go to evaluate this vaccine. This is a really unusual vaccine. The synthetic genetic code it contains should instruct muscle cells to produce the spike protein found on the surface of coronavirus. That should prompt the creation of antibodies, and that army of antibodies should remain on guard in case of future exposure to coronavirus and, if it works, prevent infection. Because its all created artificially, with no need to grow any virus, the vaccine could be manufactured on a huge and concentrated scale. It means that we can make the equivalent of 2 million doses in the volume of a litre. So, if you imagine a litre bottle of lemonade, that would have 2 million doses in it. So, when you want to start making vaccines for the world if this is successful and thats still a big if it makes it so much more tractable because you dont have to build a factory the size of several warehouses. Imperial college say they could have enough doses ready to immunise a0 Million People in the uk by next summer, but trials must first show the vaccine is safe and effective. While we await a vaccine and lockdowns start to lift the number of new cases continues to rise. This is the latest warning from the world health organisation. We expect to reach a total of 10 million cases within the next week. This is a sober reminder that even as we continue research into vaccine and therapeutics, we have an urgent responsibility to do everything we can with the tools that we have now to suppress transmission and save lives. Until a vaccine is found, the fear of a second wave of the coronavirus is very real. Today in the uk, Health Experts have urged ministers to carry out a review to make certain that the uk will be ready if a second wave arrives. In a letter published in the british medicaljournal, they say the Available Evidence indicates that local flare ups are increasingly likely and a second wave a real risk. There are also a lot of unknowns heres whats been said on that. We still do not have an answer as to why my colleagues from the black, asian minority ethnic groups are more likely to die from this illness. These are all things that urgently need looking into in a no blame, forward looking way so that we can be prepared and put measures in for a potential second wave in october and the winter. For the latest uk figures, we can go to our science editor david shukman. What is the state of the virus right now . Things have definitely been going in the right direction. This line is a rolling seven day average of new infections across the uk, far lower now than it was at the peak back in april. But let us compare that to the rest of europe. In the uk, were getting about 1000 new infections every day. Germany, france, italy, spain all getting far fewer. Again, this is a one week average for the numbers. That gives them a much better chance to tackle any new outbreaks. Weve heard this term second wave a lot, but understanding what it actually means isnt as simple, as theres no formal definition. 0ne academic told the bbc. But generally in order to say one wave has ended, you would expect to see the virus hunder control and cases to have fallen substantially. For a second wave to start you would then need a sustained rise in infections. So new zealand, which has its first cases after 2a days without coronavirus, and beijing, which is facing an outbreak after 50 virus free days, are not in this position yet. But some scientists argue iran may be starting to meet the criteria for a second wave though you wont hear the iranian government saying that. Heres Rana Rahimpour from bbc persian. We can see a difference. For a period of a couple of weeks, the deaths went to below 100 every day. Which is probably a result of a few weeks lockdown around march and the iranian new year. But it is going up and we now have more and more cases. So today for instance we had 2500 confirmed cases and 120 deaths. So it is definitely going up. But for some reason, unknown to us, the officials are refusing to call it a second wave. We know the president has said that we do not want to create fear among people and it is important to know that iran understands among people and it is important to know that iran under sanctions and huge systematic corruption is running out of money. So they really cannot support people and they are not in a position to reintroduce a lockdown. Also on another development, the bbc Persian Services has done research about the excess deaths that have been announced only for winter and it seems that the confirmed deaths is probably five times less than the actual numbers. It seems during that period, more than 6000 excess deaths were reported and it seems that the number of deaths is probably way more than what the official numbers are. So while were not yet seeing a second wave, were definitely seeing local outbreaks. Heres one example. The german state of North Rhine Westphalia has reimposed lockdown restrictions in two districts after a spike in coronavirus cases. That decision affects more than half a Million People. One area is home to a meat packing plant where more than 1,500 workers have tested positive. Heres the latest from Damien Mcguinness in berlin. Just as life in germany feels like its getting back to normal, people here have been thrown back into lockdown and the whole region is being tested. Translation it is a catastrophe, i think. And we see it here in gutersloh. I only hope the working conditions are being improved for the workers. 7,000 workers from germanys largest Meat Processing plant are in quarantine, after more than 1,500 employees tested positive with the virus. They re getting supplies and the army has been drafted in to help. But police are ensuring people comply. With force, if necessary. Angry shouting. Many of the employees are poorly paid seasonal Migrant Workers from eastern europe. Some dont speak german and feel like they are being locked up. Tonnies is the largest Meat Processing plant in germany. A family firm run by billionaire, clemens tonnies. Known here as the meat baron, he is accused of causing the outbreak through poor working conditions and cramped accommodations. But Meat Processing plants and abattoirs all over the world have been hit by coronavirus outbreaks. Scientists say they are particularly susceptible. Physical factors like low temperature, moisture, people working very closely together, theres no way they can keep the distance of two metres. Its noisy so they have to shout if they want to talk to each other. But also they are often crowded living conditions. Of course people who are coming there, many of them are migrants. The regions political leaders are also under fire for not acting quickly enough. But overall, Germanys National infection rates remain low. And officials say, so far, localised outbreaks have been contained. So there is no evidence yet of second wave. Damien mcguinness, berlin. For all these reasons, we can understand why countries are wary of going too fast too soon. Eu ambassadors met today to discuss how to re open borders from one july. And travellers from the us could be among those not allowed in. This graph from the Washington Post may help to explain why. It compares the number of new cases in the us and the eu. As you can see, theyve dropped off much more sharply in the eu. In the end, the eu ambassadors didnt reach a consensus today the talks will continue on friday. And ultimately this is the warning from the who. We have been able to show in western europe with a lot of effort that we can slow the spread. But we are not as a world on top of this pandemic. It is really very much with us and it will be with us for months, perhaps even years to come. Stay with us on 0ustide source, still to come as india reports 16,000 new cases of coronavirus in the past 2a hours, we get exclusive access to an intensive care unit in one of mumbais top hospitals. Scotlands first minister, nicola sturgeon, has announced her plan to ease coronavirus restrictions, allowing for parts of the scottish economy to reopen if progress continues to be made in controlling the virus. I can confirm that on the 3rd of july, it is our inntention to lift the guidance advising people and scott to travel no more than five miles for leisure and recreation purposes. And although the Tourism Sector will not open fully until the 15th ofjuly, we intend that self contained holiday accommodation, holiday cottages and lodges, or caravans where there are no shared services, can open from the 3rd ofjuly. However we would ask people to use good judgement and abide by the rules that apply at any time to households meeting up and be sensitive to those living in rural and island communities. And the advice of course remains to avoid crowded places. As we hopefully suppress the virus further, we will also continue to consider any measures that might be necessary to protect against the risk of imported cases of the virus. Im ros atkins. This is 0utside source live from the bbc newsroom. Scientists at Imperial College in london have begun human trials of a revolutionary vaccine against the coronavirus. Lets look at some of the days other news. The president of kosovo, hashim thachi, has been charged with war crimes by a court investigating kosovos independence war with serbia in the 1990s. A statement from a prosecutor of the kosovo specialist chambers in the hague said mr thaci and the others suspects were criminally responsible for nearly 100 murders. Other charges include enforced disappearance, persecution and torture. More than 10,000 people were killed during the independence war, which ended after a 78 day nato aircampaign. Thats on the world service. Russia has been holding its biggest public holiday, the victory parade marking the 75th anniversary of the defeat of nazi germany in world war two. The parade is usually held on may the 9th but was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. It comes ahead of a key constitutional vote next week, which could allow vladamin putin a further two terms in power. Bbc russian. While many countries are focused on preventing a second wave of covid19 others are still very much struggling with the first one. Ive got updates for you from iraq and armenia but well start though in india where cases are surging. The latest daily tally of over 16,000 new infections is the highest yet. In total, nearly half a Million People have been infected thats the fourth highest figure in the world. And over 111,000 people have died over 400 in the last 2a hours. The majority of cases are in these three states maharashtra, tamil nadu and new delhi. And theres particular focus on the capital dehli a quarter of all new cases in india are there. Were seen buildings being transformed into make shift hospitals for example this used to be a spiritual centre, now its a covid isolation facility with a capacity for 10,000 patients. Heres more from yogita limaye. There is an increasing alarm about the rising number of coronavirus cases, particularly in the national capital. In response, the government of delhi has said they will screen every single home in the city by the 6th ofjuly. What this means is that people will be going door to door to peoples homes. They will be screening if anyone has coronavirus symptoms, like fever, or a cough. In other parts of the country as well, like the Southern City of chennai, lockdown was reimposed a few days ago because of the rising numbers of cases. Weve mentioned delhi but mumbai is the worst affected city in india. It has more than 60,000 infections and of course that is putting immense strain on its hospitals. The bbcs Mayuresh Konnur has been given access to an intensive care unit in the King Edward Memorial Hospital one of mumbais best known hospitals. Heres what he saw. Beeps. These are the 15 persons with serious symptoms. The ward is calm and quiet. With relatives in quarantine, patients in the units are alone. The doctors here are their only link to the outside world. Translation the family of the patients cannot be here. They dont even know what the exact condition of the Family Member in the icu. This has increased mental stress for both patients and us. Because we meet the patients every day. We become their only immediate contact. Its notjust the patients who have the virus. This doctor and her family of nine including her one year old twins have all had it too. She got infected in april. Many doctors have struggled to cope. In another part of the same hospital feeling overwhelmed and understaffed, resident doctors have been filming the wards and posting videos on social media. Extra staff had been brought in to help the doctors since the video was made public. But their boss says scenes like these are common in state run hospitals like these. Translation when you see the hospital is crowded and one bed is shared by two patients then you will find the same situation in private hospitals as well. The monsoon season isjust beginning in mumbai and that means that Health Workers are now faced with two challenges. Treating seasonal Infectious Diseases such as malaria and dengue and fighting the virus. Next, iraq early on in the pandemic we thought perhaps it had been spared. Unfortunately not. In the past 2a hours its reported over 200o new cases thats a new high. Its overall total is 36,000. This is a Field Hospital thats being built in baghdad. It has more than 500 beds. But of course thats just a start. Local doctors have told the middle east eye the pressure on the Health Service is extremely high, with a short supply of oxygen a particualr issue. And a spokesperson for the Charity Doctors without borders has said provision of services in general had been almost chaotic in some areas. Next to armenia. Its one of the worst affected countries in the caucasus region. Such is the concern about the rise in cases, the who has sent a team to investigate. These are the figures. More than 21,000 people have tested positive and more than 300 have died. Out of a population of 3 million. Now armenia had a lockdown but it was lifted at the beginning of may when in rate of infection was still rising. From these pictures you can see there wasnt a rush to return to the cafes. Well during the lockdown, armenias economy took a massive hit. The government says that in april the economy shrank by 17 . Thats a statistic that is central to the governments insistence now that it wont re impose the lockdown. Heres the minister of health. We dont have an end goal to eradicate the virus because it is not possible. We can actually put this in front of us and say lets eradicate it, but we have to have closed borders, i dont know, for a year maybe, close businesses for months and years, and we will die from other causes actually. Many dont buy that and the Prime Minister is facing a barrage of criticsm. Heres the bbc caucasus correspondent rayhan demytrie. This is the countrys Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan visiting a front line clinic treating covid 19 patients. How many beds are vacant . He asks. The chief doctor says, its tough. There are just three. This video allegedly of a Wedding Party hosted by the countrys top army general gave many armenians the impression that the government has not been taking the crisis seriously. The following day, the Prime Minister sacked the general and other senior figures. Chanting. But that hasnt satisfied armenias political opposition. It has been calling for the entire government to resign over its handling of the pandemic. Armenias infection rate per million of population is one of the highest in the world. What the governments policy towards fighting covid 19 could be called is a disaster. They have failed completely and that is why armenia has found itself along with a couple of other countries in the world with the worst figures and the worst statistics and the worst dynamics. Armenia reopened businesses back in april, as the number Nikol Pashinyan owes his leadership to the armenian public, who brought him to power in a popular revolution two years ago. Now faced with the biggest challenge of his premiership, he is relying on his people once again to do their part to fight the virus. In the last few minutes President Donald Trump has accused germany of contributing insufficiently to nato calling it a form of delinquency. He made the remarks in a press conference with the polish president at the white house. Take a listen. Try to get along with russia and everybody. But germany, they really owe a lot of money and a toe and this is been going on for many yea rs. This is been going on for many years. When you add it all up, you probably will get close to 1 trillion. Into nato. That is not treating nato fairly but it is not treating nato fairly but it is not treating the United States fairly. The United States is a very, the major participant in nato force that we pay more than anybody else by far, have for many years. We defend europe, but europe also takes tremendous advantage of the United States on trade. Advantage like you wouldnt believe. So were trying to work that out. I would imagine they would like to wait till after the election so maybe they can do with somebody other than President Trump but after the election, they will have to pay more. I like to take in there. A lot to ta ke i like to take in there. A lot to take in. Staying in the United States, with President Trump heres one of his tweets from earlier. This is about the president s former National Security adviser, Michael Flynn. He was fired after 22 days for lying about his contacts with russians and later pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi. He then asked to withdraw his guilty plea and the case was handed to a districtjudge. This new ruling effectively ends the case. Heres Gary Odonoghue in washington. His critics will say that he intervened in this case, that. In fact, he specifically said he intervened because he thought the original sentence was a bit harsh, or the sort of prosecution was a bit harsh, and the president has tweeted repeatedly and spoken repeatedly about Michael Flynns case. And then last month, the attorney general announced a review that he had ordered of the Flynn Investigation by an outside attorney from a differentjurisdiction, and that concluded, he said, that the prosecution and the way flynn had been questioned at the time by the fbi, just after donald trump took office, that questioning was illegitimate and wasnt necessary, and therefore the lies he told in a sense were relevant and thats the basis on which doj pressed stop lying for the dropping of the case. Bear in mind, Michael Flynn was ashley the only person will for the dropping of the case. Bear in mind, Michael Flynn was ashley the only person in the Trump Administration who faced any kind of prosecution as a result. Dont forget you can get in touch with me and some of the team on twitter im bbcrosatkins hello again, temperatures made it the hottest day of the year so far. In the last 20 years, about a third of ourjunes get to 33 degrees or even hotter than that. So its not too unusual to see. On thursday, the heat will be more widespread. More humid weather and then after that, we will see some big, thundery downpours which could bring some localised flooding. These are the temperatures we are expecting as we head towards midnight. Still up around 23 in birmingham, london and cardiff. It will be an uncomfortable nights sleep in some cities across england and wales with fresher air across Northern Ireland and scotland. It will be a quiet night for most with clear skies, just a few fog patches around coastal areas. More of that sunny weather tomorrow. More widespread as well with sunny skies and spreading to scotland and Northern Ireland. Maybe a few storms across the mountains and scotland, drifting northwards but for most of us, its hot and humid with temperatures higher in scotland. 28 in glasgow, 2a for belfast. The highest temperatures likely to hit 33 towards the south. As we head to thursday evening, thats when we will see the first signs of thunderstorms moving into southern and Western Areas of the uk. Some of these storms are likely to be quite intense and they will continue to push their way northwards and eastwards as we head into friday and indeed into friday night as well. Friday afternoon, some fresher air will be moving into western portions. Temperatures for Northern Ireland, wales in southwest england, will be lower. Still hot and humid before those storms arrive. Those storms through thursday night and friday night could bring around for 30 50 mm of rain. Thats over half a months worth of rain injust a few hours, hence the risk of seeing some localised flooding issues. The weekend dominated with this area of low pressure. First of all, it will be quite windy for with some early prolonged outbreaks of rain in the northern half of the uk. Generally further south, its showery. There will be temperatures much lower. Thats the weather. Hello im ros atkins, welcome to outside source. Scientists here in london have begun human trials of a revolutionary vaccine against the coronavirus. We get exclusive access to an intensive care unit in one of mumbais top hospitals. More than 100 thousand people have now died from covid 19 in latin america with over half of those deaths, in brazil. And across the world, the pandemic has changed almost every aspect of peoples lives. Well take a look now at how its affected women in particular though. Lets go back to the coronavirus again. Latin america is the epicentre of the pandemic. Combined with the carribbean, deaths from the virus have now passed 100,000. And were told its not even peaked yet. Heres the who. We have seen a steady and worrying continuation of trend with many countries experiencing between 25 to 50 rise in cases over the last week which means many countries in central and south america, the americas in general, are still suffering sustained community transmission. Weve talked alot about brazil. Deaths there account for nearly half of all the fatalities in latin america. These latest pictures detail the stark reality of what is happening. Row after row of new graves are being dug in rio de janeiro. Over the last four months, there have been over a million confirmed cases. Mexico too is being badly affected. It has over 190,000 cases, and over 23,000 deaths. It also has a low rate of testing which with low testing, that figure is likely to be much higher. There are other challenges too. This hospital in mexico city had to be evacuated when a powerful earthquake struck on tuesday. I also wanted to mention these triplets theyre only three days old. The babies, one girl and two boys were tested for the virus within hours of being born in San Luis Potosi state. Their tests came back positive. Whats puzzling is that both their parents tests came back negative. Two of the babies are now in a stable condition, while one is being treated for a respiratory condition. So what has been the mexican governments strategy in handling the pandemic . Heres rafael rojas is from bbc monitoring in miami on that. The situation in mexico continues to be the situation that began when the pandemic hit the country. The mexican president has continued insisting that mexico has already peaked in the number of cases. Even though the number of deaths as you were initially saying has climbed to over 23,000. The government insists the situation is not as dire as the media is playing it out to be. I want to ask about chile, we talked a lot about mexico, brazil and peru in the last few days. Less about chile. Tell me whats happening there, please. Chile has currently over 250,000 cases. Over 11,700 deaths and the situation they are continues to be problematic because the numbers were rising, the government is trying to keep under control the situation but in chile as in peru, there is one big problem that analysts find and it has to do with job informality. People have to go out into the houses into the street to find food, money, to provide for their families. Something that the government has been unable to grapple. And given the different problems across the region i wonder, is there any regional coordination or does each country make its own decisions about this virus . So far there has not, there has been cooperation between certain countries of course, the political situation between several of those nations being the left wing government of venezuela or the right wing of brazil has comp located matters to such an extent that the border between venezuela, brazil, colombia and peru has been one of the most affected places because of the coronavirus. Lastly, brazil, the figures incredibly shocking at the moment. Bbc monitoring focus on Media Coverage that we see in different countries, how is the media treating this story in terms of president bolsonaro . The media has been increasingly critical of him. Even from the beginning but the Coronavirus Crisis and his refusal to acknowledge that there is a problem, the situation in which the two people who are then responsible for the response of the Coronavirus Crisis have been sat. That situation in the media has played out with intense criticism. And its very difficult to find a media outlet that defends bolsonaros position. Of course much more information on of course much more bbc news website. We dont often cover gabon on the west coast of africa but were going to today because its lower house of parliament has voted to decriminalise homosexuality. If the proposal is approved, it could be one of the few countries in sub Saharan Africa to decriminalise same sex relationships. Indeed it is a crime punishable by death in mauritania, sudan, Northern Nigeria and southern somalia. For more on the significance of this move in gabon, and the wider situation across africa, heres the bbcs gender identity correspondent megha mohan. From 1960 when the bomb had independence homosexual he was never a legal it was just not in last year in 2019. And it went above a lot of peoples heads that to criminalise sexuality law was just last year. What we saw on tuesday, yesterday was the 48 polity meant variance in the lower house have voted to overturn that and make homosexuality, to decriminalize. I said earlier, it still needs to go through the upper house and it still needs to go through the president. However, i did see a tweet earlier from the president s wife where she says parliament is restoring a fundamental human right for its citizens. That of loving freely without being condemned. The republic defends, respect for everyones privacy and remind them of the mac remains one indivisible beyond feelings. Yes to dignity and no to hate. That is from the wife of the president. We have 54 recognised nations in africa however, more than 30, around 33 of them have banned homosexuality. Countries like rwanda and congo dont have anything in law that banned same sex relations but 33, if you compare it to the whole of the world. Which were places that have been homosexual relations, that 70 foot nations in the whole world and 33 of those are from africa. We saw last year in kenya that the high court upheld the penal code to remain for homosexuality between men to be illegal. So are we seeing, is the bonk leading the way . Thats not necessarily, the temperature of the whole of the continent right now gabon. Thank you for taking us through that. In a few minutes in the programme we will have a special report on white women being denied abortions because of the corona pandemic. Charities say they fear that thousands of undocumented workers in london are at risk of coronavirus because theyre too afraid to seek help. Thats despite reassurances from the government that hospitals will not carry out immigration checks. Lea na hosea reports. Illegal migrants live on the margins of our society. Walking in working in the Informal Society staying under the radar. She says she came to london on a student visa but when she tried to renew it she was denied and says the Home Office Never returned her passport. After years of homelessness she started cleaning houses for a living but now covid 19 has pushed her to the edges of poverty and destitution. Has pushed her to the edges of poverty and destitutionlj has pushed her to the edges of poverty and destitution. I had to stop working. And didnt have any money, i almost didnt have accommodation because i cant live without accommodation. In undocumented worker says she feels contracting the virus but if she gets ko vid 19. Contracting the virus but if she gets ko vid19. She wont contracting the virus but if she gets ko vid 19. She wont seek medical help. Two years ago i been hospitalized they said they are going to get the report and they will submit it to the home office and that is very scary for me because i am not ready to go home yet. We have a close friend and we lost him because of this virus. And he didnt go to the hospital because he didnt go to the hospital because he was scared. And then they find him dead in his own flat. Its concerns over the inability of the undocumented to protect themselves 01 undocumented to protect themselves or seek help that is led to a group of over 60 charities to call for the government to offer legal status to all undocumented migrants on Public Health grounds. We are calling for all undocumented migrants to be given leave to remain. Because we do feel that this is the humane thing to do. And it would protect notjust them but society at large as well. Rightly or wrongly undocumented migrants are here to stay. Entering this Global Pandemic the need for eve ryo ne a ccess this Global Pandemic the need for everyone Access Health care and support is more vital than ever. This is outside source live from the bbc newsroom. Scientists at Imperial College in london have begun human trials of a revolutionary vaccine against the coronavirus. The International Monetary fund says the coronavirus pandemic is damaging the World Economy even more than it previously forecast. The imf now predicts that global output this year will shrink by nearly five per cent and wipe twelve trillion dollars off global output over two years. China is the only large economy forecast to grow at all this year by just one percent. Heres the imfs chief economist Gita Gopinath to put that into context. So these numbers are historic 4. 9 is the worst number that we have since the great depression. Already at 3 it was the worst it had gotten even more worse. And for pretty much all countries in the world the kinds of numbers we have for growth, that the us we have 8 , for the uk 10 . These are numbers that are also historically lows for pretty much all countries of the world. Across the world, the pandemic has changed almost every aspect of peoples lives. Were going to take a look now at how its affected women in particular though. This article in the Guardian Newspaper has gone as far as to declare the pandemic is destroying womens rights. And whilst that might be an extreme way of describing it, theres an increasing body of evidence supporting the idea that as a group, women are being particularly adversely affected. First Domestic Violence. The un has called the increase in Domestic Violence globally the shadow pandemic. It says across the world, Domestic Violence helplines and shelters across the world are reporting rising calls for help. Professionally, women seem to be at a disadvantage too. This article in the science journal nature says preliminary data suggests that across disciplines, womens publishing rate has fallen relative to mens amid the pandemic. Analysis of households with two opposite gender parents from the institute for fiscal studies in the uk suggested that compared to fathers, mothers are more likely to have quit or lost their job, or to have been furloughed, mothers are spending less time on paid work but more time on household responsibilities. A seperate study from the university of sheffield found that the proportion of mothers responsible for most of a familys childcare increased from 27 to 45 during lockdown. Medically, too, there are some issues that affect women disproportionately for example, women across europe are being denied abortions because of the pandemic. The World Health Organization classifies abortion as essential health care, but the bbc has found hospitals that have stopped performing the procedure during the pandemic. Heresjean mckenzies report. As the pandemic hit hospitals across the world had been forced to suspend nonemergency surgeries. But in romania nearly all of them stopped abortions. This is a phone call made to a hospital last month. At the height of the crisis only 11 out of the 280 hospitals in romania were offering the procedure. They are trying to use the pandemic as an excuse. A lot of women especially the ones that are coming from vulnerable backgrounds that are living in poverty perhaps cannot get an abortion for that this is how they do not dispute the situation is. My boyfriend tricked me. He pretend that he was using a condom. I cant afford to have a child. She couldnt find a single doctor to give her an abortion. So i was recommended someone who was retired, who said that i could have an abortion at their home. I went to their apartment, they had this special room in the bed. I was very afraid. It was done using a vacuum. Which i wasnt expecting. Its a similar story in countries across europe. Weve spoken to women in italy, croatia and poland have all been unable to get treatment. In these countries it was already difficult for women to get an abortion. And this crisis has just put more obstacles in their way. There are few clinics offering the procedure now. And of course women have been unable to travel to seek alternatives. In slovakia where there have been recent attempts to restrict abortion politicians have warned women against having the procedure. Very important people in Health Care Systems slovakia said that this is not acute and urgent medicine and urgent medicine and that this is not the right time for women to undergo abortion. How do you respond to that . This is not true from the medical point of view. Are you recommending women not to have abortions during this time . No, not at all. Ijust say if its too dangerous from epidemiology point of view then you can wait. Of course you can wait. I didnt say dont go far. Human rights organisations are now urging all governments in europe to make sure abortions are safely available. Daria is still worrying about her backstreet procedure. Im still bleeding. I dont think im badly injured but im worried they might be something wrong. And there is concern that in some places access to abortion may never return to what it was before this pandemic. See you soon bye bye. Good evening on how me that holly hamilton with your latest ports. Calls pga tour has confirmed three positive test for coronavirus and head of the travellers championship in connecticut. Its all ready caused world number for to in connecticut. Its all ready caused world numberfor to pull out after his caddy was among those diagnosed. Lets get more from our golf correspondent there is just a feeling at the minute its all a bit ofa feeling at the minute its all a bit of a shambles, his neck was . M certainly been a stressful day for eve ryo ne certainly been a stressful day for everyone involved on the pga tour. Two of the positive test for this week have come up with caddies, Ricky Elliott as you mentioned northern irishman who caddies for brooks that has pulled out. There was some confusion over elliott because he then had a further retest which im told come back as negative. But that apparently is one of the variables that kata got with covid 19. Ricky elliott is a close friend of Graeme Mcdowell and mcdowells caddie has also tested positive. Mcdowell has withdrawn from the tournament. And cameron we knew had already tested positive. He was one of the players who was scheduled to be in the field but note longer and it either. Simpson has withdrawn its understood that maybe an infection within his family. That is a precaution from him as well. And chase kappa brooks kept his brother has withdrawn as well. He qualified on monday, set up residence in the house for the week in connecticut but of course that then created in association with Ricky Elliott and so unfortunately hes had to withdraw as well. |j suppose the question now is how its led to this . Some players have been accused of behaving as if they are immune to the virus. Does there need to be some sort of change of protocol . I think that is coming. There is no suggestion that any of the players, certain caddies that i just mentioned have been involved in any kind of lax behaviour is so far as social distancing is concerned. But certainly the evidence that we saw on television from the tournaments that have taken place in texas and South Carolina last week have shown that the protocols that we re have shown that the protocols that were put in place, some of them were not being followed. Fist pumping, spitting on the golf course, to march close contact between player and caddies. That was there for all to see. Then what need tested positive last week and from the weekend on we saw the players being much more respectful of social distancing. Today weve had a press conference from the commissioner of the pga tour, he says that members have gone out to the players reminding them of their responsibilities, refining the protocols as well. He said there would be serious repercussions for anyone not following those protocols that have been put in place. So travellers is going to go ahead and plan. There are some players who understandably dont feel co mforta ble understandably dont feel comfortable competing Andy Sullivan has talked about the fact that the world ranking points are still going to be awarded at these tournaments. He says its not fair. Does he have a point . Yes, ithink he he says its not fair. Does he have a point . Yes, i think he does. He says its not fair. Does he have a point . Yes, ithink he does. I think all of the European Tour players based on the side of the atla ntic players based on the side of the atlantic who are ineligible and unable to play on the pga tour, they are ata unable to play on the pga tour, they are at a significant disadvantage with the awarding of ranking points at pga tour events. Sullivan, i was speaking to today have written a piece with the bbc sport website he said that the situation is an absolute joke. Said that the situation is an absolutejoke. He said that the situation is an absolute joke. He said said that the situation is an absolutejoke. He said he cant disguise the fact that he is fuming about the scenarios that is playing out at the moment. The fact is its not going to change. The american players do have the opportunity to climb the rankings, the european based players willjust have a slide down until they are able to play. And that will be untiljuly the 22nd. And carter great to have your insight as always. Thank you. No backtalk of at face criticism which he organised tennis in serbia. Also for the socialising and partying that took place off court. The world number one is one of our players who sense tested positive for covid 19. Djokovic his father plays another of the players bug areas player for spreading the virus. Djokovic his position as the president of the Players Council has been called into question. President of the Players Council has been called into questionlj president of the Players Council has been called into question. I think hes learned a very very hard lesson. Obviously through his tour he was trying to do i think thats the decision that the players, thats when you need a player union where they vote on the president and make the decisions. So with the djokovic situation that has to come down from the players and the players choices. Lets not forget there were two others on the conference that are an adult will be having a conversation with djokovic. Apologies, slight issues here. Lets move apologies, slight issues here. Lets m ove o nto apologies, slight issues here. Lets move onto cricket. Englands cricketers currently in a bio secure camp in South Hampton ahead of next months test series against the west indies. Pakistan are due to arrive this weekend for their series in august. Although ten players have tested positive for covid 19. Personally its a worry for me at the minute because i feel like we are very much focused on ourselves. We are in this environment where we re we are in this environment where were trying to get it right for ourselves. It just were trying to get it right for ourselves. Itjust proves that one i guess, not a mistake but one of mistake or something that goes wrong it could rapidly catch fire and get out of hand. Two of the worlds major marathons have been cancelled because of the pandemic including the new york marathon. Which is a course is the worlds biggest. This yea rs course is the worlds biggest. Much more on the website of course but for me and all the team here thanks for watching and goodbye. Hello there. It was a hot and sunny day on wednesday. Temperatures reached 32. 6 celsius at Londons Heathrow airport making it the hottest day of the year so far. How does that compare with recentjunes . If we go back to the last 20 years about a third of ourjunes sketch you 33 or even hotter than that. We have seen some pretty hotjunes recently for top back in 2017 temperatures peaked at 35dc. We have got more of that hot sunny humid weather to come on thursday but more widespread as well. After that we are going to start to see some big country downpours break out. These have the potential to bring some flooding issues. For most of us on thursday, start off on a dry note with lots of morning sunshine. Maybe a few fun patches around the coastal areas. There may be a few showers forming through the afternoon across the high ground in scotland drifting northwards for a time but the vast majority of us its hot, it sunny and humid. High temperatures for northern island, 20 for in belfast was up 28 and glascow but the highest temperatures across the self, we will see temperatures probably peaking around 33 celsius we will start to see storms break out across the south and west of the uk. It will be another very warm at night for sleeping. These are the kind of temperatures as you perhaps going to bed. 23 and libby will elect liveable birmingham making for a comfortable night sleep. There of those thunderstorms that might wake you up. Those storms as we head into friday will continue to drive their weight northeastward. Some of them could still be pretty intense. Into the afternoon we start to get fresher atlantic air moving to get fresher atlantic air moving to western parts. A fresher field to the weather with lower temperatures in the west. But it will still be hot and in the west. But it will still be hotand humid in the west. But it will still be hot and humid in the east with temperatures potentially still reaching the low 30s. Friday night sees more of those drums driving the way north and east words. Some of them can be pretty lively for a time. And then more general outbreaks of rain working into the west later in the night. As far as the amount of rain were likely to see with the storms three to eight through thursday night to friday night some could bring 30 to 50 mm of rain. Thats more than half a months of rain falling in a short time. Hence the risk of flooding. The weekend dominated by this area of low pressure. Saturday is going to be quite a windy day and close to the centre of that low pressure we are looking at some fairly lengthy outbreaks of rain. Also quite windy. Meanwhile further southwards really a mixture of sunshine and showers. Some of them quite heavy, quite windy. Temperatures coming back closer or perhaps even a bit low for the normal of that share high teens to the low 20s. Sunday stays u nsettled to the low 20s. Sunday stays unsettled the same area of low pressure still with us. When his mother still in the north and more rain and scotland. Further south against their will be a scattering of showers. Some could be quite heavy but will be blown through on a fairly brisk wind. Temperatures generally into the mid to high teens to low 20s. Into next week we see something of a split in the leather developing. High pressure towards the southeast, low pressure towards the southeast, low pressure towards the northwest and some rain dividing those to weather regimes. The Northern Areas it does look like it stays generally a little bit more u nsettled stays generally a little bit more unsettled with a risk of rain are showers. The amount of rain we see from place to some uncertainty. South east read a better chance of the weather staying dry and turning a bit warmer across southern areas in the week ahead. Thats the latest weather. Bye for now. Tonight at ten the new vaccine trial for coronavirus, which could be available for millions by next year. The project is led by scientists at Imperial College london, using a revolutionary new approach. If it works, they should have enough to immunise
