World. This is the story of the extraordinary women who suffered great horrors In The Red House and in countless places like it across the philippines. They want to make sure their ordeal isnt forgotten. They want justice. Mileng is 85. Her sister lita is 83. The sisters have lived their whole lives in mapanique, in the philippines. The Second World War changed their lives completely. This woman lives with her sons and grandsons in manila. Shes 88 years old and earns a living through sewing. She is still haunted by what happened many decades ago. She was 14 when japanese soldiers bombed her village and kidnapped her. She was held captive and repeatedly raped for ten days. She had become part of what historians believe is one of the biggest operations of Sexual Violence in modern history, the deliberate enslavement of up to 200,000 Women Across Asia for the pleasure of japanese soldiers, the so called comfort women. Many were in south korea but far less is known about the victims in the philippines. But as the war went on, the operation unravelled. Japanese soldiers started using rape to subdue towns and villages. What they did in mapanique, where sisters lita and mileng live, was particularly violent. Over 100 women and girls were raped In The Red House that night. And over the course of the war, many more were raped or forced into Sexual Slavery across the country. The passage of more than 70 years has not given the women closure. Over the years, the japanese government has expressed sincere remorse and apologies, but the women are demanding a full public apology, which accepts responsibility for what happened. This group is preparing a petition for the Japanese Embassy in manila. These women are all in their 80s and 90s. The oldest member is 99. This is about easing the last few years of wounded lives. But time is running out. Of the estimated 1,000 filipina victims, only about 70 are still alive. Across town theres a different campaign. 86 year old great grandmother estellita is part of a group that stages public rallies to demand justice from japan and call for peace in the region. Rising tensions with china over the South China Sea have brought the philippines closer to japan. They have signed several defence deals and there is one on the cards now which could see japanese troops back on philippine soil. We are already victims of war, so we dont want wars in our country. We dont want wars in our town. We know that war only breeds new generations of war victims. The call to arms is well worn. Theyve been campaigning for nearly 25 years. In december, 2015, the japanese government did apologise to south korean survivors. But theres no sign of a similar offerfor the philippines. The women suspect their government hasnt been pressing japan hard enough out of fear it will damage the alliance. But even so, estellitas daughter says taking part in rallies has been a comfort. When her mum first started in the 1990s, it was a huge surprise. Many of the women kept silent for decades out of shame. Estellita said nothing for 50 years. In mapanique, its milengs birthday party. Shes invited the other survivors of the red house to join the family celebrations. But her sister lita seems to have lost count of how old she is. Happy birthday to you happy birthday to you. Cheering these two women have spent their whole lives together, these two women have spent their whole lives together, but they almost lost each other. After they were released from the red house, it took them nearly three days to find one another. Music plays. History books in the philippines make little mention of the suffering of their women during the Second World War. Fidencia has made it her mission to educate young people about what really happened. One of her most painful memories is of what took place on the final night, after suffering days of repeated rape and abuse. This isntjust about making sure her story is remembered. She wants it to be a lesson. In this very conservative country, only around a third of victims of rape and sexual abuse come forward. Hearing fidencias story has emboldened one young victim to speak publicly for the first time. Ok, so right now, im feeling shaky because i am being brought back to that space where i had to go back to my own sexual abuse. It happened to me seven years ago. Its embedded in my own being. From the first time that ive encountered an elderly woman, who has been raped. I think its the about time that we speak up, that we accept what happened to us. Moments like this give some solace to a lifetime of suffering. Singing. Estellita and her daughter have come tojoin the labour day march. The baking heat takes its toll. In the past, two women died after a rally. But shes resolute. Hello, welcome. Compared with the drama at the end of last week with the ice and the snow and the strong winds and the big waves, nothing too dramatic to look forward to this week. Good news, isnt it . A lot of dry weather as well. The catch is there will be a lot of this, cloud, a rather grey prospect for many. Just a question of what shade of grey. Hopefully some breaks in the cloud, some glimpses of sunshine where you are, but dont expect too much in the way of sunshine. A great start to your monday morning. There will be a line of rain through central areas. Quite a chilly start across east anglia and the far south east, maybe A Touch Of Frost or the odd fog patch, but milder further north and west, no problems with frost, but it will be a murky start to the day. Dry though for Northern Ireland and the bulk of scotland. Temperatures here well. Through the day i think that damper zone is going to stay put, although hopefully the more persistent rain will ease away down through the west country across the english channel. Still a line of damp weather here. Dry either side and some sunshine for east anglia and the far south east, so it will be chilly here. Just four, five, six celsius. Milderfurther north and west, in double figures for Northern Ireland and scotland and hopefully a few glimpses of sunshine here. 0n into tuesday, no great changes. We could wake up to a frost across the far south east, but it will be chilly here. Further north west again more cloud, higher temperatures and some damp and dreary weather across parts of northern england. That is really the pattern for the early part of this week. Across Western Parts of the uk, always more cloud around, but it will be relatively mild. In fact 10 celsius for this time of year is pretty good, im sure you will agree. Further south and east across the country always that much chillier, particularly across the far south east. Even by day i think we will be struggling to get much higher than five or six celsius. And with clear skies the prospect of frost. Some uncertainty about the extent of those clear skies and frost but certainly expect things like this across the far south east at least. Mind you, that is nothing compared with the cold across other parts of continental europe. The surge of chilly air all the way down towards spain and portugal with temperatures widely by day staying below freezing and severe overnight frost. We are living a charmed life back home. With High Pressure in place, relatively quiet, a lot of dry weather. Weather front up to the far north west producing some thicker cloud and some outbreaks of rain. I am not ruling out the odd spot of drizzly rain elsewhere, but generally dry, albeit quite cloudy. Pinpointing exactly who will seek the best of any breaks will not be easy, but again potentially the far south east. Quite chilly here still. Elsewhere temperatures much of a muchness. It is a similar story on thursday with a lot of dry but quite cloudy weather. Some areas of fog around potentially, and wherever they skies brightened up, the possibility of A Touch Of Frost. We end the week with a similar pattern and the High Pressure still fending off these rain bearing Weather Fronts to the north and west. No surprises that fridays chart is going to look a bit like this. Dont take the details to literally. You get the gist. A quiet end to a quiet week, weather wise, and temperatures at sixes and sevens. Similar pattern through the weekend. This block in the jet stream. However out in the atlantic, developments are starting to take place the jet stream waking up. It is going to go in this direction and eventually it will bring a change in the weather with some rain bearing Weather Fronts. A dry start into next week, before the rain we think will arrive and it will probably turn windy as well. The timing of that change still somewhat uncertain, so stay tuned and we will update you again tomorrow. This is bbc news. The headlines at 10pm labour accuses the chancellor of threatening a trade war with europe, if access to the Single Market is denied after brexit. Meanwhile, the us president elect, donald trump, says the uk was smart to vote to leave the european union.
