Personalm private moment, and not one she would have wanted to be shared. The news item didnt really add any more detail to what had happened to caroline, and so i feel the inclusion of the image was there just for viewers intrigue, so we could all see the final moments of her life. I cant believe the bbc would be so insensitive as to use this image. The media have learned nothing about how it can have a negative impact on peoples lives. Nicola thompson had wider concerns about the bbcs reporting over the past week. Here are her views. And the last few days, the bbc have shown news on almost a continual loop. Weve had interviews with tv pundits who never even met her. Weve had a reporter for some reason stand on the steps of the Magistrates Court that caroline attended recently. And none of this is actually news. Caroline was a celebrity, and as such, i fully accept that her death needed to be reported. But beyond that, were straying into the territory of nosiness, of rubbernecking, and im not comfortable with it at all. She was a celebrity, but she was also a human being, and she was one in great distress. Please, lets show some restraint, for her and for her friends and family. On wednesday, the inquest into her death opened, and one of the details that emerged from it and was reported by the bbc was the means by which caroline took her own life. That prompted this call. We strongly advise against posting about suicide, because Vulnerable People might actually take that method and use it themselves. Whether you have to publish that, or leave that detail out. With me now to talk about all of this is thea fairly, who is the Deputy Editor of the bbcs news at six, and the 10 00pm news as well. A number of viewers had concerns about why the bbc reported how she died. Was it responsible to forecast that detail . I think that detail, we thought long and hard about the language we use about whether to report that detail or not. It had come out of the Coroners Court and there was a huge amount of detail in that. But we decided to broadcast only the very bare essentials of how she died. Our thoughts are very much informed on the guidelines of reporting on suicide, which suggests that you can report very much that the headline of what happened, but not the detail. That is absolutely what we did. We certainly didnt put any of that detail in the headlines, unlike other media outlets. We mentioned it very briefly in an introduction, and not in the piece at all, so we really carefully considered how we reported that fact. I think there is an issue around there was a lot of speculation around her death. And we felt on balance, and it was on balance, it was a judgement, we felt was important to make clear. The very bare essentials of what happened. As opposed last photograph of her, posted on instagram, it was widely used in headlines and was used in reports in the tv bulletins on monday. Viewers say it was too intrusive. Do you think its possible you did cross a line with that one . I think the thing about that photo was that it was released by a friend, and so caroline flacks friends and family had released very small amounts of pictures and information. 0bviously her family released a photograph of her on wednesday, as well, and also a statement that she was going to make on instagram. So i think the judgement was that that was a photo taken by a friend. I think it might have been in her own house. Exactly, and that wasnt something that had been taken off her social media. It was released. The sheer volume of coverage, with what for the first day of so is mostly speculation, was there not a case to have just reported the actual facts in bulletins, and left it at that until more information emerged . I would say we really did stick to the facts that we knew. I think there was obviously a lot of speculation more widely, particularly on social media. I think what we looked at is, we know that with suicide, theres very rarely one reason, one cause, that there are a number of issues that have been raised, including by her own management company, around her Upcoming Court appearance. So we spoke to a barrister about the pressures facing people, and also how the Crown Prosecution Service come to the conclusions that they did in terms of prosecuting. So, when we did speak to individuals, it was very much about an issue related to some of the pressures that she might have been facing. Caroline flack was clearly distraught at the national meda coverage of the prosecution case that had been launched against her. I wonder, you mentioned talking to people, but how far did you bear in mind that in how you covered her death . We really bore it in mind. This was a kind of story that we really apply a huge amount of editorial scrutiny to. Theres a lot of editorial meetings that go into presenting this kind of story. A lot of the issues around the story are very much in the public interest, Even Public Health issues around Mental Health, around social media. And weve got real track record on the bulletins at six and ten in looking at issues of Mental Health, and suicide much more broadly. 0nly last week, we had a piece about regulation of online harm, where he talked to a family who are not celebrities who had faced similar issues. So i think it was those issues always really carefully considered. In the end, there are two different audiences watching bbc. There are many who admire caroline flack, who want to share their grief, and others who feel the whole focus on her is feeding a kind of celebrity frenzy which is ultimately harmful. How do you balance those . Yeah, it is a balance, and she was clearly a public figure. Whether you watched love island or not, she was a very popular broadcaster. So i think it would have been odd not to cover her death in some way. I think there is a balance. And as i said, we look at the issues surrounding suicide quite regularly and very responsibly, and we talk to people and families who arent celebrities at all. So i dont think that her celebrity was the only reason we were covering her story. We try to cover some of the broader issues around press intrusion, social media, Mental Health in the criminaljustice system. Think you very much. Finally, deep social is a platform for publishing content across social media. I need a haircut. The video produced some strongly felt views on twitter, with jason with a] writing. Well be back to hear your thoughts about bbc News Coverage again next week. Goodbye. Hello there. Some of us should see some sunshine this weekend, but its looking decidedly unsettled again. Well have plenty of showers around. Some of these will be heavy, theyll be of snow across the north of the country, and for most of us, particularly today, its going to be very windy, with pretty widespread gales. And you can see why. The pressure chart shows lots of isobars on the charts right across the country. A couple of weather fronts working their way southwards across england and wales. Lots of showers packing into the north and the west of the uk. So it could start quite grey on saturday, with bands of rain spreading south eastwards. Most of them should clear away by the afternoon. And then we should see sunshine and showers, most of these showers across western areas, the odd heavy one, and plenty of snow showers across scotland. Now, the winds a feature, 40, 50 mph gusts quite widely, up to 60 mph for Northern England and into northern ireland, up to 70 mph in exposure across the north and the west of scotland. And these heavy snow showers will continue to pile through, significant accumulations on the hills, and there will be blizzards as well when you factor in the strength of the winds. Cold in the north but mild in the south, 10 13 there through the the afternoon. As we head through saturday evening and overnight, we continue with the snow showers in the north. Further accumulations down the hills, and we see a ripple in that weather front, which will push some rain back northwards to parts of northern ireland. But quite a bit into england and wales, particularly across western areas. Again, itll be milder in the south, cold in the north, with the risk of some ice. 0n into sunday, this weather front will be slow to clear from england and wales through the day. Eventually it will do, so its a slow improvement through the day. Quite a wet morning, i think, for many parts of england and wales. Slowly, though, the skies will brighten up. That rain and cloud will hang back across southern counties of england towards the channel. But elsewhere, some sunshine developing. Further showers across scotland also. Again, these will be wintry over the high ground. This is going to be another chilly day in the north, mild across southern counties of england. So that brief ridge of High Pressure will settle things down for a while later on sunday, early into monday, is short lived. This next deep area of low pressure will hurtle in on monday and bring a spell of severe gales and snow. Some of the snow could be disruptive across far north of england, the central belt of scotland, for monday morning rush. It will transfer northwards, and itll revert back to rain as temperatures lift a little bit. But widespread gales and severe gales in the north. Further south, a band of a rain sweeping east across england and wales, with sunshine following on behind, maybe one or two showers. Again, temperatures 10 12 degrees in the south, feeling cold in the north. This is bbc news. Welcome if youre watching here in the uk, on pbs in america or around the globe. Im james reynolds.
