To political supporters and former aides include three life peerages, one for ex vote leave chief matthew elliott, another for businessmen and conservative donor john moynihan, and thirdly, ruth porter, a long term adviser. There were also damehoods for the writer and maths education campaigner Shirley Conran and the former conservative Ministerjackie Doyle price. Another ex conservative minister Alec Shelbrooke gets a knighthood. Critics have expressed dismay at the list. Remember, liz truss was prime Ministerfor Ao odd days. She and her conservative colleagues pushed the economy off a cliff. Families across the country are paying more on their mortgage, more in tax, more on their credit cards, as a consequence of decisions taken by liz truss. And these are rewards for failure. Speaking to bbc radio 4s today programme, a former minister who served in liz truss s cabinet defended her right to put people forward. Liz truss took on the most senior politicaljob in the country, of being prime minister, which is a role that comes with enormous responsibilities. She had been Foreign Secretary and held otherjobs beforehand. In a statement, liz truss said those she has honoured are champions of conservative values. Downing street, which published the list, insists that all proper conventions were followed. And for us, our heirs and successors. This is not the first time a Resignation Honours List has caused controversy, and its unlikely to be the last. Shelley phelps, bbc news. Joining us from the newsroom now. As you were saying there, any honours list always causes controversy but in her 49 days in thejob certainly attracting a lot of criticism. Talk us through some of it. Attracting a lot of criticism. Talk us through some of it. Thats right, lu. This us through some of it. Thats right, lucy this list us through some of it. Thats right, lucy. This list was us through some of it. Thats right, lucy. This list was controversial lucy. This list was controversial before it was published. Labour and the Liberal Democrats had been calling for a rishi sunak to block its publication and said that it shouldnt be allowed. We had there from Labourfrontbencherjohn Ashworth in my report but we have also been hearing from the Liberal Democrats, they have described this list is shameless and say that its an insult to people who they say are still reeling from the Mini Budget Which took place under liz trusss premiership. Since this list was published, it seems to have reignited some of the course of a wider constitutional reform that we have often heard from campaigners but it certainly seems to have re sparked the debate around this. We have heard from groups like the Electoral Reform society who have long been arguing for a gross form of the House Of Lords and they say that this latest list show that the system is rotten and needs to be changed now. We have also heard from the Institute For Government think tank, doctor hannah white one of the directors there who has drawn a distinction between the way that the new years honours list is drawn up and diesel Resignation Honours. She said the Resignation Honours should be discontinued and that they are wrong. Be discontinued and that they are wronu. ,. , wrong. There has been criticism about the timing wrong. So the list is published by Downing Street and some critics have accused them of trying to bury the news by publishing it alongside the new years honours list knowing that that was going to get quite a lot of attention. Its also a recess at the moment so mps are not in west minister, they are back in their constituencies. If you think of what the public attention is at the moment, people are catching up with family over the festive period and planning their new years eve so perhaps not paying so much attention to some of what is on the news agenda. Downing street sources have denied any suggestion is that this has been deliberately timed, they say that all the proper conventions have been followed and why we are talking about timing, you know, as Rishi Sunak Stepping into the new year and the time for a fresh start so in this is a kind of unhelpful throwback to a legacy of one of his predecessors that he is trying to move on from. Earlier we reported on the Travel Disruption caused to eurostar Train Services because of the bad weather. Well, there are weather and flood warnings currently active across the uk, as Nicky Schiller reports. It is set to be a wet and windy end to 2023 for many people across large parts of the country. There are a number of Weather Warnings in force. Lets start in scotland where there is a yellow warning in force the rain and snow until midnight. In terms of the rain, we could get up to 25 millimetres in lower ground whilst the large parts of scotland have had snow over the last week or so, the forecasters are saying there could be a significant amount in northern scotland. There could be up to 20 centimetres of snow in the highest ground. As we move down the country, there is a yellow warning for gusty winds in force for wales and southern and eastern england. You can expect gusts of up to 75 mph. In Northern Ireland, heavy rain also forecast. Forecasters are saying because of this wet and windy heavy conditions, you can see that he might expect expect disruption to travel. Talking of disruption, thames link, which operates services across south east england, is warning of disruption until five oclock on new years day. Not down to the weather, rather the fact that they have staff shortages. They are saying there could be last minute cancellations and also delays to services. In particular, they are warning people coming into Central London for the new years eve celebrations, that there will be no overnight services. So revellers who are hoping to get home on the thames link service, there will be no Services Running overnight and they are not operating any alternative forms of transport like a bus, so you will need to find your own way home. That will also affect passengers heading to Luton Airport as thames link also services the airport. The uk government ban on excel bully dogs comes into force tomorrow. Meaning Rescue Organisations have until the end of today to rehome them. If they cant, the animals will have to be put down. Rebecca ricks went to visit a centre in exeter, in southwest england, to find out how theyre coping with rising numbers of the breed. He may not know it, but drax has been given a second chance. The dog was bred from two xl bullies, before he was rescued from birmingham and recently rehomed in exeter by a charity. Drax was an arranged rescue, but volunteers say the situation now is worse. Up until the ban came into effect, we were never asked by a council, pound, or by a vet to rescue one of these dogs, because it had been abandoned. We had not had one request before. Since october, weve had about 12. And we are just one small local volunteer run rescue. The rspca is also seeing people starting to Leave Xl Bullys at its centres. What we are faced with unfortunately is a deadline of new years eve that if we havent rehomed the xl bullys that in our care that are ready to be rehomed, we are going to be in the really unfortunate situation that theyre going to have to be put to sleep. So we are working incredibly hard to ensure that those dogs being rehomed that are able to be rehomed, but were also then seeing abandonments coming in as well. So it is very much a changing pattern from day to day. Drax is now living with bain, richards other xl bully and the family are taking the ban seriously. We are lucky enough l to own our own home, so we are a big garden and secure fences and stuff. We did put in some extra gates to keep the dogs. Away from the main gate. Just to be on the safe side. And then we just stepped up our l training with both of the boys. I the ban came after a series of dog attacks on people by xl bully type dogs. To legally keep their dogs, owners must buy a certificate of exemption, have them microchipped, insured, neutered, muzzled and on a lead outdoors. The government says it took quick and Decisive Action to protect the public and that it was working closely with Canine Experts to bring the measures forward. Rebecca ricks, bbc news. A 29 year old e scooter rider has been charged after being stopped by police on a motorway in southwest england. It happened on the m5 motorway in somerset in the early hours of friday morning. Next year will mark the 80th Anniversary of one of the key dates of World War Two the D Day Landings in 1944, and a series of events will take place to honour veterans. One of them, a man called david teacher, hasjust celebrated his 100th Birthday this month at a care home in greater manchester. Jayne mccubbin went along to meet him. Happy birthday, dear david happy birthday to you. David teacher, one of the very last d day veterans left in the uk, turns 100, and perhaps he is one of the most modest World War Two veterans. David, take me back to d day. You were there. At first we were apprehensive because we didnt know what to expect. But once we got involved in what we had to do, it became more or less simple, a doddle, and we waved through it without too much trouble. Mainly because we had a wonderful air force and anything that came within any miles of the beach was shot down. You say it was a doddle, but there were bombs falling at your feet. It was worse than bombs there were machine guns. I mean, they were men. I say men. There were boys falling at our feet. I dont know, we seem to have overcame it very well, very easily. The D Day Landings were far from a doddle, laying the very foundations for an allied victory. Davids d day was driving a bedford ql, a three and a half ton truck, off a Landing Craft into very deep water. He didnt know whether he was going to even get through the water, never mind get to the beach and didnt know what was going to happen on the beach. There were bombed every night. They were shelled every day. A german aircraft flew so low he could see the pilots face and a bomb dropped at their feet but didnt explode. David was lucky to live. His best friend, not so. He was shot dead on the day of the landings. But in front of one of the bedford vans, which took david on tojuno beach, he was presented with a card from the king. On behalf of his majesty, the king it gives me great pleasure to present. You with your Birthday Card to celebrate your 100th Birthday. Thank you, sir. Very much appreciate it. Thank you very much. Thank you. Every year has been Something Different and something to appreciate. It has been fantastic. It has been fantastic life. Much better than civilian life. Absolutely extraordinary. And if you have the time to listen to his stories of the things he experienced during World War Two, absolutely incredible. Absolutely incredible. And its so important we hear these stories because. There arent many of the World War Two veterans left anymore. Thats our challenge. But there are some events he cant bear to talk about, one driving through a Concentration Camp months before the end of the war. Could you tell me about that . No. Youd rather not. Id rather not. Too horrible. At his Birthday Party were his children and grandchildren. The only person missing, his wife, nancy. And you were married for 76 years to the love of your life . Yeah. How did you meet nancy . At a dance. We were walking up the steps and i looked over and i stopped and i said, thats the girl im going to marry. And she said, you must bejoking. I said, no, that is the girl im going to marry. And you did. Eventually i did. I miss her a great deal. It sounds like youve led a remarkable life. Absolutely, enjoyed every minute. Every minute of my life has been out of this world. But i have not wasted a lot of my time, done a few useful things. A few useful things . The D Day Landings, Battle Of The Bulge one of the few remaining veterans who played an integral part in defeating the nazis. Its been an honour talking to you. Pleasure. Happy birthday, david. Jayne mccubbin, bbc news. Thanks very much for that. Lets get some of the stories from around the world. Many of the questions focused on taiwans difficult relationship china. The Frontrunner William Lai rejected accusations he would steer the self ruled island towards full independence. China has expelled nine Military Officers from its parliament the National Peoples congress. They include four generals of the armys Strategic Missile force. Its the latest in a series of high level restructuring moves in the military since defence minister li shangfu was abruptly sacked in october, following months of speculation about his whereabouts. No explanation has been given for the officials removal but there have been reports of a corruption investigation. Indonesia has announced an additional tax on Electronic Cigarettes as a way to reduce vaping, the latest country to do so. The finance Ministry Said long term vaping is shown to negatively affect peoples health. The extra levy will see 10 of the Excise Tariff for e cigarettes added to the cost of purchase. Indonesia is among dozens of countries to impose punitive levels of tax on vapes, to discourage their use. The greatest showman and Mission Impossible star Rebecca Ferguson is fronting a new bbc show this year, taking viewers on a journey through her homeland, sweden. The actor is narrating a new documentary called Wild Scandinavia, starring the fjords, volcanoes and wildlife of some of the most remote parts of northern europe. Charlotte gallagher reports. Its notjust a rogue organisation. Its impossible. Were both dead. Shes best known for her action filled roles in blockbusters like Mission Impossible and dune. Your father didnt believe in revenge. Scandinavia is a land steeped in myth. But Rebecca Ferguson is now embracing the real life drama in nature. Distinguished by its mottled tail, this young sea eagle is pushing his luck. The hollywood actress is narrating a three part series, Wild Scandinavia. And the stunts in this show really are a matter of survival. Eagles fighting over food. Puffins squabbling over territory. For rebecca, who grew up in sweden, its been the dream job a chance to channel her inner sir david attenborough. Hes unwittingly strayed into dangerous territory. I was brought up watching these programmes and equivalent similar programmes, and now i have my daughter and she gets to watch them, and she can watch the one now that ive done as well. And she says wildlife in scandinavia can be a bit, well, wilder. 0ne wolf tries to distract him away from the carcass. We have notices, and in our magazines and newspapers its sort of beware, the wolf is out. And i believe that most of them in the south part are not to be touched. Whilst up in the north, we have different rules because they come too close and they become very dangerous. So, she has Endless Possibilities to satisfy her obsession. Rebecca says the extreme sports in this documentary remind her of death defying hollywood stunts. So, when i saw this episode and i was doing the voice to it, and i saw her doing all the base jumping, it reminded me that were even bringing the knowledge of what theyre doing in this nature to our huge american movies but theyre living this world. And theres also another risk that the crew filming the programme have to contend with. Jessie begins to get a taste of their charming personalities. Theyre sort of strolling around either in pairs or. Oh, no puffin poo. Right in my mouth. 0scar takes the lead, navigating a safe route. And while here in the uk, we may go ice skating on a rink, theres a more adventurous approach in scandinavia. We would do it all the time. You have your hot chocolate, you have your ice axe which if you fall in, you have to be able to get out quickly. So, i would live in, its called Trolldalen Which basically is translated into troll valley is where i was born, and it was a peninsula. So, we would ice skate along the peninsula, there was one stretch that would take us from our house to an island outside and we knew that the ice was thick enough to be able to go back and forth, but you had to be very, very careful because if the ice breaks, its not a laughing matter. Its essential the reindeer get energy rich food. I mean, im already pitching ideas. Bbc, youre in for a ride. Im actually notjoking, i have some great ideas. And it sounds like we may see Rebecca Ferguson getting back to nature on the small screen again soon. If he wants to win her trust, hell need to turn on the charm. Charlotte gallagher, bbc news. You can watch the First Episode of Wild Scandinavia on bbc two, tomorrow, at eight twenty five. He was adopted by a new family, and has since raised more than a Million Pounds for charity even launching his own foundation two years ago. He and his mother paula spoke to bbc breakfast earlier. And, you know, to be awarded it for setting up the foundation and the money that he has raised and services to child abuse as well. You know, he hasjust done so much in such a short time. Congratulations to him. Now its time for a look at the weather. Hello there. Good afternoon. Still some more unsettled weather as we head through the rest of this weekend. Feeling rather stormy at times. Weve seen some snow across the central belt of scotland, such as here in glasgow, but the snow levels here will gradually lift through the afternoon. It will become more confined to the hills of scotland, but possibly some more Travel Disruption, heavy downpours of rain, particularly towards the west, with the risk of some coastal gales too and here is that deep area of low pressure just captured nicely on the Satellite Picture here, this large swirl of cloud, its all moving further eastwards, but an improving picture across Northern Ireland for the rest of the day with some brightness around, but heavy rain across the South West Of England and wales. Coastal gales here, that rain stretching up into Northern England and some more snow for the hills of central and northern scotland, perhaps another 5 10 centimetres accumulating. And of course, this could cause some more disruption to some of those major routes. Now, as we head through this evening and overnight, then, our cold front will gradually be pushing further eastwards across into east anglia, central southern england, squally gusts of wind, particularly towards the south coast, gusts of wind here of up to 60 65 mph, potentially, along with some heavy downpours of rain, blustery showers digging in behind. Not quite as chilly tonight across much of scotland and its still mild towards the south. And this, of course, is new years eve. During the day, were likely to see some more blustery showers, some hail, some thunder, possible Lighter Winds across scotland and it should be largely dry, particularly towards the east. But again, its quite gusty towards the south coast. It remains mild in the south, colder across much of scotland. But lets take a look at the big night itself. Were likely to see again, more blustery showers blow through. Again, very windy with strong gusts of wind towards the south coast. Could cause some disruption here. And while were showing lots of showers on the charts here, there will be a lot of dry weather around as well, perhaps a patchy frost across scotland where it will be feeling colder. The winds will be lighter here. Into new years day and its a much quieter looking picture. Well eventually start to see the winds pick up towards the south west and some outbreaks of rain by the time we get to the end of the day. But as you can see, theres lots of dry weather. There will be some sunshine around. Expect to see some more showers towards north west england, perhaps the south west of scotland, too. It stays largely mild as we head through the start of 202a. Its colder in scotland, of course, and it will be rather unsettled at times. Hello, live from london, this is bbc news.
