For some going to be more important than ever. Foi some courses going to be more important than ever. For some courses it is not just about listening to ever. For some courses it is notjust about listening to a lecture, practical isjust notjust about listening to a lecture, practical is just as important. So i took a trip to an empty University Science department to see how a virtual la Bs Department to see how a virtual labs could transform education as we know it. At for universities like this one, it is the pc version that is proving vital through the pandemic. This lab would be normally filled with 2a stu d e nts normally filled with 2a students but because of social distancing we can only have eight students, a study that showed us whether students interacted with these virtual la bs interacted with these virtual labs in situations of their subject matter was really improved. So obviously when covid came along we wanted to bring the virtual lab into every students home in the context of an online seminar where it is led by an academic, and they are asked questions, they are checked on their knowledge as they go through the workshop. With Emergency Services being stretched thin and social distancing in place, it means face to face training is not as easy as it used to be. But that doesnt mean that they cant still be trained. Sure, people have been using video calling or slide presentations, but what about. Virtual reality . First up, firefighting. A platform has been created where you can customise a Fire Training scenario by specifying the environment, the type of fire itself and how to put it out. This extinguisher that they provide has been fitted with trackers to make you feel like you are operating a real one and not just a you are operating a real one and notjust a couple of controllers. Aside from firefighters, it is designed to train Office Workers so they can also learn how to tackle workplace fires. But what about the more serious scenarios . Rover have created a footway for firefighters to learn on the go, by filming 360 360 degrees videos of various setups, firefighters can put on a headset and go through the training as if they were there. Now looking at this i thought, isnt this just playing a video . How exactly can this be any more useful in Virtual Reality . Simply we cant get those venues on a day to day basis because we cantjust set fire to buildings. It also costs us in the region of £10,000 £15,000 at a time. So we ran a brief feedback session this morning with the cruise that actually attended the scenario and a number of other people who didnt go and they we re people who didnt go and they were really engaged, almost entering the scenario themselves, verbally talk about what they would do and how they do it. Right, that is what is going on with firefighting. Lets move on to healthcare. Fundamental vr system helps train surgeons and nurses on how to perform certain tasks during procedures. So the pandemic has just accelerated my view a trend that was already taking place and that is about being able to go 2a hours a day into able to go 2a hours a day into a learning environment, now that they cant get into the operating room as easily as they used to, the numbers of cases are dramatically reduced. People dont want to come into hospital at the moment, and this is an opportunity to feel some this is an opportunity to feel some fill some of that gap. But for more covid 19 specific scenarios, hospital in taiwan is already trailing another system. Created doctors can use this set up to train how to interact with patients who may have covid 19 s, such as putting on protective gear, taking temperatures and gathering medical samples. Normally you would be taught in a room where someone would be taught in a room where someone in a big loop padded suit would approach you with a rubber knife, and offices would use mock taser cartridges to secure the bad guy, like this. But these cartridges are expensive, around £30 a pop, and being in a room in your work place isnt exactly the same as a life threatening scenario. So Virtual Reality company avrt have created a massive space using these sensor mats where officers can put on a headset and roam around a virtual environment. What i have seen in this area is that people have a tendency to be very excited about this technology, and perhaps not ask to see the evidence that it is a fact. I think it should be used cautiously until we have the evidence to use it to a greater extent. So crossing from the real to the Virtual World may seem like an obvious alternative to traditional training, but given how much is online with the work of these Emergency Services, and how new this all is, perhaps its better to use Virtual Reality to complement, rather than replace for now. This laboratory is designed to be used the Real World Research by postgraduate students. Using data to study what applications and solutions can be used by ca re and solutions can be used by care providers in the future. Its also experimenting with robotics to see how these can be used to complement existing ca re be used to complement existing Care Services and to test the interaction with people using them. We are testing every frequency identification, it may see some of the tiles on the floor that we are testing at the moment and they provide the information on whereabouts it is and we can also understand that by using machinery of technique and detecting disturbances in the outer frequency environment that tell us what people have in their home and again, to understand how well they are moving about, if they have fallen down, if they need any help. In the remote farms around here, frequently can go a full year without manually checking on their livestock. These solar power walk other ways. The cows walk along here and they get weighed on this smart scale. They are identified through an id tag on the area which is read to a sensor on this wall. It means the cow will never leave their paddock. They can sit back and remotely monitor the growth of their livestock. The scales could save time and money, alerting the farmer but if theyve lost weight, which we re if theyve lost weight, which were needs a feed supplement to be them up. Its a good indicator youre not getting enough nutrition and get that early indication from the weights much quicker than you can if you are doing it by the naked eye. 2096 of the calves dont turn up at weaning and there is a whole range of different causes, it might be disease, it might be wild dog attack but it might understand that. Farmers can gauge how hydrated their animals are and how much water they are actually using, crucial in periods of drought. Properties can be measured in the square kilometre instead of a hectare an acre, but we are dealing with thousands of animals spreading other large landscapes, so you could be driving four hours every day, checking on whether there is water in the trough or whether defences are broken and you may not even seen animal during that time, so if we can provide an automated way of getting the information, thats a massive time saving and labour. The weekend is upon us and the weather is looking a bit mixed. Something of a north south split. Across much of england and wales weve got a fairly decent weekend ahead. Its looking largely dry, pretty warm as well with some sunshine on offer. But for scotland and Northern Ireland, a different story. Here, things will be turning increasingly windy, particularly through saturday, and therell be some rain at times. Heaviest for the northwest of scotland on sunday. But for now, weve got this week weather front thats been slipping its way slowly south of the past 24 hours or so. A more active weather front waiting out in the atlantic. That is what will bring the rain to the northwest. Saturday morning, we just got a band of cloud on this weak weather front pushing south. Could be the odd spot of drizzle for southern england first thing, but that clears away. Much of the uk looking bright with some long spells of sunshine, but there will be more of those blustery showers for scotland and Northern Ireland. More persistant rain arriving by the evening. Temperatures on saturday will move to about 13 to 21 degrees. As we move through saturday overnight, thats where we see that more persistent rain arriving across Northern Ireland and scotland to really heavy around those hills in west in particular.
