Rain to come for some before our attention turns to heavy snow in eastern scotland, i will have the details. Could freelancers finally be brought in to Government Support schemes . The covid emergency measures faces heavy criticism and is given six weeks to turn things around. In sport, they couldnt again, could they . Leicester city top the premier league this morning, five years after they won it against the odds. Its wednesday 20th january. Our top story. After a controversial four years, Donald Trumps presidency comes to an end later today, with the inauguration of the 46th president , joe biden. On the eve of his inauguration, mr biden spoke of the need for the nation to heal, as he led a Memorial Ceremony paying tribute to the 400,000 americans whove died with covid 19. Heres our washington correspondent nomia iqbal. Church bells rang out from the National Cathedral to remember the victims of covid 19. The reflecting pool at the National Mall was lit up for the 400,000 people who have lost their lives. Democrats held a memorial at capitol hill, where the inauguration ceremony will take place later. The victims were honoured across the country and by the incoming leadership of america. Between sundown and dusk, let us shine the lights in the darkness along the sacred pool of reflection and remember all whom we lost. Tonight we grieve and begin healing together. Though we may be physically separated, we, the American People, are united in spirit. Then a touching tribute from a nurse who works in the front line. Amazing grace how sweet the sound. At exactly 12pm eastern time, donald trump will become a civilian and joe biden the president. But this is an inauguration like no other. There wont be crowds watching because of the pandemic, and the large military presence here means things are even more restricted. Among the crowds will be representatives from many different countries, including the uk. I think this is going to be a very warm relationship. It is built on a very solid bedrock of all the things that make the relationship important, and special, deep, profound, successful cooperation on defence, security, intelligence, and increasingly on the economy, on science and on prosperity. President trump wont be there, though. But had this to say to his successors. We extend our best wishes, and we also want them to have luck, a very important word. It wasnt entirely a goodbye. I want you to know that the movement we started is onlyjust beginning. There has never been anything like it. Under the constitution, mr trump can run for office again, but he is facing another impeachment trial, and he is also losing the support of some Top Republicans following the deadly riots on capitol hill. The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people, and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government. Which they did not like. America under President Trump has been stormy and spellbinding. Four years on, joe biden hopes under him this country can be calm and still. Rescue teams in eastern china are continuing efforts to reach more than 20 miners who have been trapped underground for over a week after an explosion. Rations of food and medicine have been sent down to the group who have urged search teams not to stop trying to reach them. Mark lobel reports. Rescuers feeding out a human lifeline, to provide liquid food for the survivors. Medicines are also being sent 540 metres underground as fears of rising water levels there grow. Signs of life emerged on sunday, after rescuers knocked down in hope. Suddenly, a pull on the rope from below, to the sheer delight of all. Cheering. Then a handwritten note from the miners emerged, saying 11 of the 22 trapped are together, with a 12th miner close by. Reporting injuries and high blood pressure, but with ten others unaccounted for. And that is the weather probably sums it up for many good morning. Another element adding to the weather mix, covering of snow in scotland, a lot more to come tonight but our immediate concern is still the rainfall, 18 hours of rain for some parts of england and wales, a met Office Warning in place. Here, the rain is still fairly relentless in Northern England. Heaviest across snowdonia and the western pennines, slightly better to the north and west of scotland and Northern Ireland with sunny spells but some snow in the far north of scotland and more snow across the Southern Uplands. Not as much as we saw last night perhaps. Wetter in east anglia and the south east compared to yesterday, winter is quite strong in the south touching gale force, strengthening further across the night. The winds are quite strong. The snow will be across the Peak District and Higher Ground in wales but eastern scotland will have the greatest concern, temperatures around freezing orjust above, and we will see some significant snowfall across eastern part of scotland to take us into tomorrow morning. As much as 40 centimetres blowing around in strengthening winds across the grampians, 20 in the Southern Uplands and a covering in the central belt tomorrow. The call for more people to receive a covid 19 vaccination leads this mornings daily mirror the metropolitan police chief, Dame Cressida dick and teaching unions are calling for their work forces to be protected. An article by theresa may is the mails lead. The former Prime Minister has accused borisjohnson of abandoning the uks global moral leadership during his time in downing street. Joe biden is pictured on the front of the Daily Telegraph as it reports he will sweep away some of Donald Trumps most controversial policies hours after he is sworn into office later today. And the New York Times turns its attention to the legacy of President Trump with a video highlighting his key moments. 0ut of date systems mean some people arent receiving the support they need to get them through the pandemic. Thats according to a group of mps this morning. Theyre calling for action in the next six weeks. Nina has more. This is a group of mps from different parties who meet every so often who discuss public money being spent and whether it is value for money. And they are not happy. Millions of taxpayers have been missing out on covid crisis support. A quick reminder of whats on offer. The key measure is the furlough scheme, where the government pays 80 of the wages of employees. That has been extended until the end of april. Theres also a similar scheme for the self employed that gives grants up to £7,500 for three months. Between them they have paid out nearly £60 billion. There are also loans for businesses, and universal credit to lean on for those without savings. The government has put £80 billion in to direct support for individuals and businesses, but there have to be limits, and thats meant some taxpayers have been left out. Its estimated that around 3 million are ineligible for government help, the so called excluded. And todays report highlights the plight of one group of workers in particular. Paye freelancers, workers who provide a service to one, or a small number of companies. Instead of managing their own accounts they are told to go on to the companys books and pay tax that way. But they are not employees. So often dont get traditional benefits like holiday pay. And its meant theyve missed out on furlough. We spoke to louise, whos a freelancer tv technician. And jo who works in teacher training. They both get taxed at source. But both have missed out on support. We were told as a team by the people that we were doing the majority of the work at the time of the lockdown for, that we were not eligible for furlough. I had to take six months of mortgage holidays, and i had to defer my loan payments on my car and credit card. This does not make them go away, just make the debt grew larger. You can see why they are so unha. So what happens now . The tax office has been given six weeks to explain why freelancers and others have been excluded and set out ways to overcome these obstacles. It doesnt mean the millions who have been left out of support will automatically be given backpay but it does offer some hope of change. Some of the newspaper this morning are writing it up as a lifeline. You have to take your hat off to hmrc, sometimes these schemes were turned around overnight, 80 billion has been pumped out and it has given lots of support individuals and businesses but in this report looks at things like it systems that are out of date and an inability to track fraud. It says fundamentally big changes are needed to make sure the system is fair for everyone. Someone we are interviewing today is the home secretary priti patel, she will be here at 7 30am, lots to talk to about what we are going through in the uk but also the inauguration ofjoe biden in the us as well. There are a very small number of people who arent exempt who continue to flout the law, and they are a selfish minority. And that is why we have enforcement operations out every day across the Public Transport Network to make sure that those people, they dont get on the bus, we take them off the bus and we find those who are wilfully noncompliant. Transport for london has ditched plans to permanently make its tube, 0verground and dlr stations cashless. Ticket machines at more than 200 of its stations were made cashless during the summer, but the the decision was criticised by mps and Campaign Groups who said it would have left a large number of people in london reliant on newsagents to top up their 0yster cards. An emergency call handler paralysed below the waist is attempting to walk one mile, raising funds for the London Ambulance service charitable trust. Sean ash from bexley thought he may never walk again when he was diagnosed with a rare spinal condition last year, but has already completed half a mile, raising more than £6,000. He will walk the other half later this week. And good for him lets take a look at the travel situation now. 0n the tube, a good Service Across all lines apart from the waterloo city line which is cloosed for the time being. 0n the trains delays on south western services which are disrupted between woking and wimbledon due to track circuit failure. 0n the roads problems on the north circular queues towards the roadworks westbound at bounds green road. 0n the a2 delays westbound through the roadworks at the danson interchange. Now the weather with kate kinsella. Good morning. Its another mile start to this morning, temperatures widely in double figures. Storm christoph continues to bring outbreaks of potentially heavy rain today, and the met office has a weather warning in place valid until midday tomorrow. Further outbreaks of rain associated with that storm pushed through on a brisk south westerly wind, some heavier, more persistent rain this afternoon which could lead to some localised flooding. Temperatures are still mild. 0vernight tonight, a cold front approaches us, the wind will strengthen and we are looking at gusts of up to 50 mph. Some heavy rain as it moves through, but behind at the colder air nudging in, so the temperature will drop and we will get some clear skies, minimum temperature between three and five celsius. You will notice storm christoph moving away north through tomorrow so it will be a drier day, still quite breezy but the wind not as strong as today, a similar day for friday and we should see some spells of sunshine. Im back in half an hour. Bye for now. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. It with dan walker and louise minchin. Scientists have warned deaths from coronavirus will continue to rise for some days after the uk recorded its highest daily death toll since the pandemic began. But there is some hope as cases fall and the number of vaccinations being given continues to rise. Dont contact us, we will contact you. Thats the way the system is going. And we are going through the priority groups, stage by stage, making sure that everyone gets vaccinated. And what you make of the report, we have seen the discrepancy in some areas of the age groups being targeted at the moment. What you make of why that is happening . Back in early december, make of why that is happening . Esta; in early december, gps were given a choice about whether you signed up to offer to give the vaccine are not in your primary care networks, which are groups of three to five practices. We are a group of three practices, and we looked at it and we thought, that is going to be hard work, 12 hours a day, seven days a week, but lets give it a go. But one of our practices has big premises and we can socially distance the patients. But if you are in a small practice, you are all small practices and you dont have that many staff, you dont have big premises, it isjust that many staff, you dont have big premises, it is just not physically possible for those practices to the jabs. In which case the patients are reliant on big centres being set up, which is why there is some discrepancy. So if you are lucky enough as my patients are to be in a practice which has signed up to the scheme, then you will be getting the vaccine, but others not quite so lucky at. Yes, and. Unfortunately it may well go up this week. We know that the death rates rise as a lag of about three weeks following the peak of infections, thatis following the peak of infections, that is the way it works. People are admitted to hospital and then unfortunately some of them go on to die. So i think we are going to be in for die. So i think we are going to be infora die. So i think we are going to be in for a bad week, and we have had deaths, i have had patients who died, and this is desperately sad. That is why it is so important, even if you have had the vaccine, this vaccine takes a good two or three weeks to give you any immunity, so even those who have had the vaccine need to still stay safe, it doesnt mean you can go out, that you immune just because you had thatjab in your arm yesterday or last week. Ihmd your arm yesterday or last week. And there was concern i saw yesterday from some sage scientists that people might think they have had the jab, they might be a little more complacent. Jab, they might be a little more complacent jab, they might be a little more comlacent. ,. ,. , , complacent. Yes, and the answer is lease, complacent. Yes, and the answer is please. Give complacent. We are giving that message to everyone we are giving the maxine too, that you are giving the maxine too, that you are not immediately safe to go and hug your grandchildren. The immunity takes time to work, so it is important even if you have been vaccinated to still keep following all the rules. I know that is a tough message, but you have got to give this vaccine time to work. Tell give this vaccine time to work. Tell us as far as give this vaccine time to work. Tell us as far as you give this vaccine time to work. Tell us as far as you can, what age groups are being affected . It is all age groups, the people who are dying of the elderly and clinically vulnerable, but all ages are being infected and what we are seeing of courses that young people are getting it and they are not generally so ill, but they can go and give it to granny or to an elderly aunt or uncle where the story might be very different, so it is so important that everyone, everyone, keeps socially distancing, Wearing Masks, washing your hands, staying at home. It is so tough, but we are, as the Prime Minister said, we are, as the Prime Minister said, we are, as the Prime Minister said, we are on the home straight, the vaccines are rolling out, and i genuinely think come march we will be in a different scenario. Dr Rosemary Leonard with that small note of optimism, thank you very much. We will take any small note of optimism at the moment, wont we . It is 6. 37. The top of the premier league is a wide open title race, and leicester looking very nice at the moment. We thought it couldnt happen in 2016. Could it possibly happen again . Leicester city are top of the premier league this morning, five years after they won the league title at odds of 5,000 to one. They beat chelsea 2 0, Wilfried Ndidi and James Maddison got the goals. They go above Manchester United at the top, and managed to mostly keep their celebrations socially distant. Obviously with the celebrations you have got obviously with the celebrations you have got to be careful, but i ran off and have got to be careful, but i ran off and slid have got to be careful, but i ran off and slid on my knee so i dont think off and slid on my knee so i dont think anyone could get near me anyway think anyone could get near me anyway. The gaffer is really stamping his authority on the group and we stamping his authority on the group and we are stamping his authority on the group and we are starting to play well, we have been and we are starting to play well, we have been for a while but it is about have been for a while but it is about showing that consistency, and we control about showing that consistency, and we control things without the ball as well we control things without the ball as well and it is always good when you can as well and it is always good when you can do as well and it is always good when you can do that. Well, its another result that leaves questions for Frank Lampard at chelsea. Despite spending huge amounts on transfers this season they now sit eighth in the table. Leicester are a good team, they are in good form. We are not in good form, that is clear tonight. But we could do better, we know that, and im not going to dress it up any other way. This is what the younger players in the team of the new players to the premier league will really feel. This is the cut throat nature of what it is. West ham united are only six points off the top after winning in last nights other premier league match. They beat west brom 2 1 at the london stadium, with the winner coming from michail antonio. The hammers are seventh and have won four in a row in all competitions. That result leaves west brom in the relegation zone. They could end up in more trouble the premier league are investigating why Robert Snodgrass didnt play for them last night. He was signed from west ham this month and the baggies announced before kick off he wasnt starting against his former club because of an agreement in the deal. Before i can answer anything that might before i can answer anything that might cause me, west ham, or anyone else might cause me, west ham, or anyone also some might cause me, west ham, or anyone else some trouble, i will wait to see what else some trouble, i will wait to see what the premier league has got to say see what the premier league has got to say i see what the premier league has got to say. Southampton finally secured their passage into this weekends fourth round of the fa cup. A covid outbreak at League One Shrewsbury meant the two sides had to wait to face each other in the last of the third round ties, but southampton won 2 0. Shrewsbury were being led by their assistant, their boss Steve Cotterill is in hospital having spent time in intensive care with the virus. Its been a worrying two weeks, to be honest. He was in intensive care over the weekend, so it was a worrying time for everybody. He is recovering well now, we have been in close contact and i have sent him a text message after the game. He is proud of the boys, missing the boys, and i have never known him take a day off the whole time i have known him, so this will be killing him not being involved, but like i say, hes got to rest and recover and get better. Hes expected to make a full recovery but will definitely miss two pga tour events. This years first major the masters at augusta is due to start on april 8th. Next month its the super bowl in the United States, and for the first time itll feature a female referee. Sarah thomas will make history as the first woman to officiate in the match. Shes been a full time nfl official since 2015 the teams playing in the super bowl are set to be decided this weekend. I started with news of a new leader at the top of the premier league. Heres matt with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. We have got storm christophe has been with us for well over 24 hour is. The rainfall totals we have experienced so far, rainfall conditions on snowdonia, but some parts of north west england getting close to a month of rainfall, and there is still about 18 hours of rain to come in some of these areas as well. Still met office amber in force, could be flooding just about anywhere, but the area of greatest concern remains across parts of Northern England towards the north and the latest warning details on the bbc weather website as well as all the latest Flood Warnings. But while the amber warning will go through to tomorrow, there will be flooding beyond that. Let me show you this graphic from the Environment Agency, looking at how the rivers respond from wednesday through to saturday. The biggest response i going to be the rivers across parts of north west england in particular, and then into parts of West Yorkshire, but even once the rain has finished through tonight and tomorrow, notice how into friday and tomorrow, notice how into friday and saturday, the likes of the lower ouse and the nene, and the greater ouse, so keep an eye on the Flood Warnings throughout. But lets get back to the here and now. The satellite imagery shows the weather coming from storm christoph. There are clearer skies across parts of Northern Ireland and scotland, so cold here, but there is still some snow around after last night across southern scotland. The blue colours, the bulk of the rain, england and wales through today, particularly across western areas, where today towards the south east, it will be mild but pretty windy, the wind touching gale force in places, still cold air sits touching gale force in places, still cold airsits in touching gale force in places, still cold air sits in place across scotland and Northern Ireland. Temperatures around the hills meaning freezing throughout the day, especially where you have that snow falling. At long last through this evening and overnight, after another speu evening and overnight, after another spell of heavy rain, that will shift eastwards, turning briefly to show across the mountains, strong winds touching gale force at times towards the south and east, and then more significant snow as we finish the night to tomorrow, low levels could see up to four centimetres, but through eastern scotland, the Higher Ground of the grampians into the Southern Uplands, we could see a fair amount start to cover up and with strong winds, blizzards are likely as we go into thursday. Further south, a cold start to tomorrow, much brighter than today, a mix of sunshine and a few wintry showers but persistent rain will be gone, wet across the channel islands, the north east of scotland remains fairly wet throughout the day, and around the coast that is, in line fairly significant snowfall expected still across the grampians throughout, but as i said for most of you, the worst is over as far as rainfall is concerned, but those levels will continue to rise. A colder day for all, leading to a start friday, wintry showers across the northern half of scotland, a few showers elsewhere in the west but a lot of dry and bright weather after a frosty and icy start to friday, and its days chilly with temperatures around 4 8. As we go into the weekend, another area of low pressure pushing on toward southern parts of the country, and a greater chance of some rain and sleet. But overall, dan and louise, drierand brighter compared to what we have got at the moment. Thank you very much for that, see you later. The sight of a butterfly taking flight is something lots of us have stopped to look at, but have you ever wondered how such delicate creatures fly . Apparently its a question that has baffled scientists but now, a new study shows that the species has evolved an effective way of cupping and clapping their wings to generate thrust. Laura foster reports. It was this moment that has left scientists all a flutter. High speed cameras confirming what had been suspected for half a century. That butterflies dont just flap their wings but clap them together. Their flexible wings bending to form a cup or a pocket of air. When they collapse, this thrust is Even Stronger and more efficient. Its only now, thanks to modern technology and a swedish wind tunnel, that we can see it. Well, its a challenge to work with any living, flying, freely flying animal. But with butterflies, maybe even more, because they are smaller, they are faster in their behaviour. Difficult to predict their behaviour. And also, when flying them in a wind tunnel, its difficult to get them to behave as you want to, when you want to, and also to fly where you want them to fly. For a long time, scientists wondered how these creatures could actually avoid predators because of their awkward shape. If you look at their wings, you can see theyre very large and broad compared to the size of their body and arent considered to be very aerodynamic. But this technique of clapping and capping now appear to have given them an evolutionary advantage. Now the thinking is this technique developed by the humble butterfly could be applied to modern technology, to make drones and underwater vehicles faster, travel further, and last for longer. Laura foster, bbc news. Joining us now is Martin Warren who is the head of development at Butterfly Conservation europe. I see you have got a smile on your face. ~. ,. ,. ,. ,. So we knew that they didnt just flap pictures in flight. So we knew that they didntjust flap up and down with stiff wings, they can roll their wings. With stiff wings, they can roll theirwings. Somehow, with stiff wings, they can roll their wings. Somehow, we dont know how they flex their wings, but they can curve them as they fly, and that means that they can effectively swim through the air and push the air backwards, a bit like you do in a Swimming Pool when you swim. But this research has really shown us how they have got the evolutionary edge, because a lot of things out there want to eat butterflies, birds and so on, and this clamping mechanism gives them the thrust that gives them a bit of a speedy, jerky flight, and of course for a bird that makes them a bit more difficult to catch, so that gives them one up on the birds. Now, before the latest national lockdown, call mores infection rate was well below the National Average and People Living there were following the lowest level of coronavirus restrictions. But there have been dramatic rises in recent weeks as breakfastsjohn maguire reports. Like the rest of the uk, cornwall is locked down. But the county has enjoyed some of the lowest infection rates, just one of three areas to be in tier1 in the autumn. Recent weeks, though, have seen dramatic rises. I have to say, its quite mind blowing how easy it is to transmit that new variant. Because of the summer, because everybody lives outside in cornwall, we managed to keep the rates really low. Once it seeded, which happened because of the new variant and because of the additional socialising, i think, that went on at the same time as the new variant hits us, because we were still in tier 1 at the beginning, those things together mean that now we are suffering from the consequences of that. And what were seeing with the new variant is once it takes grip somewhere, it is just so easy to transmit. You would of course expect cornwall s resort towns to be quiet injanuary, but look at this. Newquay on a sunny day last march, during the first and toughest lockdown. And now, the same street, this time, with looser restrictions, and more people out and about. Its very worrying. I mean, we were lucky, i think, to get through the summer, and i think that was very important for our businesses and our tourist trade. The last few weeks have been dire. Quite a lot of people got together at christmas and we have a huge spike in infections. The rules are complicated, i think, and its difficult to know. The first lockdown, it was like a ghost town. Now you go out and there are people walking, there are people driving. A few miles along the North Cornwall coast, the Watergate Bay hotel, normally open all year round, has closed its doors again. Its not what they are used to. We run at 90 occupancy as an average throughout the year. But at the moment we are closed completely. Weve had to furlough almost everybody, so over 200 people. I think it is pretty challenging. You know, for them. Wed all rather be here, wed all rather be doing what we do. Were a hospitality business, you know, we love personal interaction. But were following the guidelines, of course, and wed love to be open as soon as we can be. The county only has one large general hospital, so its vital Covid Infection rates are kept as low as possible. And even during the Holiday Season last year, the virus remained under control. The chief executive of visit cornwall is once again telling people not to visit cornwall. Or, not yet. Our message this year is different to last year. Last year, obviously at this time it was, dont come. There is light at the end of the tunnel. We operated last year with over two Million People down and no impact on the virus levels. Our message now is dont come now, but start planning for the summer, start planning for the spring, and even the autumn. Its time to get back together with your families, your grandparents, parents, grandchildren all together, reconnect and create those memories. But start looking now and book now, there is nothing to be lost by booking ahead. That light at the end of the tunnel only comes with mass vaccinations. In the meantime, the county will be working to drive down infection rates while preparing to welcome visitors back in a few months time. And gearing up to host the g7 conference of World Leaders injune. Then, cornwall s resilience will really be tested. John maguire, bbc news, truro. I could do with a slice of that, that picture at the end. We are going to have to wait, dan im just looking for a bit of optimism. We have had butterflies, thatis optimism. We have had butterflies, that is what we can give you. And there is lots going on with the weather, matt has got all the details, do watch carefully because there was a lot going on. And we will be talking about what is happening in America Today as well. Yesterday was Donald Trumps final full day in office, and today we will see joe full day in office, and today we will seejoe biden inaugurated, and that will take place at around five oclock our time this afternoon. And that is why we have enforcement operations out every day across the Public Transport Network to make sure that those people, they dont get on the bus, we take them off the bus and we find those who are wilfully noncompliant. Transport for london has ditched plans to permanently make its tube, 0verground and dlr stations cashless. Ticket machines at more than 200 stations were made cashless during the summer. But the decision was criticised by mps and Campaign Groups who said it would have left a large number of people reliant on newsganets to top up their oyster cards. An emergency call handler paralysed below the waist is attempting to walk one mile, to raise money for the London Ambulance service. Sean ash from bexley thought he may never walk again when he was diagnosed with a rare spinal condition last year, but has already completed half a mile, raising more than £6,000. He will walk the other half later this week. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. On the tube, a good Service Across all lines apart from the waterloo city line which is closed for the time being. On the trains, delays on south western services which are disrupted between woking and wimbledon due to track circuit failure. On the roads, problems on the north circular. Queues towards the roadworks westbound at bounds green road. On the a2 delays westbound through the roadworks at the danson interchange. Problems on the m11 which is closed northbound atjunction 7 at harlow due to overrunning roadworks. Now the weather with kate kinsella. Good morning. Its another mild start this morning, temperatures widely in double figures. Storm christoph continues to bring outbreaks of potentially heavy rain today, and the met office has a yellow weather warning in placem valid until midday tomorrow. Further outbreaks of rain associated with that storm push through on a brisk south westerly wind, some heavier, more persistent rain this afternoon which could lead to some localised flooding. Temperatures are still mild, 11 celsius. Overnight tonight, a cold front heads towards us, as it approaches, the wind will strengthen and we are looking at gusts of up to 50 mph. Some heavy rain as it moves through, but behind it colder air nudging in, so the temperature will drop and we will get some clear skies, minimum temperature between three and five celsius. You will notice storm christoph moving away north through tomorrow so it will be a drier day, still quite breezy but the wind not as strong as today. A similar day for friday and we should see some spells of sunshine. Im back in half an hour. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Our headlines today. We did what we came here to do, and so much more. Donald trumps turbulant four years as us president draws to a close. To heal, we must remember. And its hard, sometimes, to remember. But thats how we heal. Its important to do that as a nation. His sucessorjoe biden speaks of the need to heal the nation as he prepares to be sworn in. The former Prime Minister, theresa may, has accused borisjohnson of abandoning britains position of global moral leadership. A volatile situation. Flood warnings rise as storm christoph gives parts of the uk an overnight drenching. There could be another 18 hours of rain to come, making the flooding even worse. Even once the rain clears, we then turn our attention to heavy snow in eastern scotland. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people, and they tried to use fear i and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government i which they did not like. America under President Trump has been stormy and spellbinding. Four years on, joe biden hopes under him this country can be calm and still. Nomia iqbal, bbc news, washington. Nomia is in washington for us this morning, ahead of the inauguration ceremony. We know there is a huge security operation, tell us about that and what else is going on today. Good mornini. What else is going on today. Good morning yes. What else is going on today. Good morning. Yes, security what else is going on today. Good morning. Yes, security is what else is going on today. limp. Morning. Yes, security is tight, it always is ahead of any inauguration. But it is particularly the case following those deadly riots on capitol hill earlier in the month. I walked around dc in the last few days and today, and it is quite a surreal thing to see armed troops on the ground. Lots of people here are really taken aback by it but they do understand why its happening. Later on today, 12pm my time, which is 5pm uk time, joe biden will become the next president of the us and donald trump will already at that time be at his home in florida. But he is still the president , he still has a few hours left and he has been using that time to issue his pardons. This is what lots of people were waiting for. Its always controversial when president s do this, they all have the power to do that. Top of the list, that really stuck out, he is pardoning his former chief strategist, steve bannon. Steve bannon is a very provocative figure. He actually fell out with the president but last year he was facing charges linked to a Fundraising Campaign for the president s us, bored of all, something which mr trump said he had nothing to do with. Us border wall. He was accused of defrauding millions of dollars but today mr trump has cleared him. Steve bannon always denied the charges, he was always denied the charges, he was always due to face trial but he has been pardoned today by the president in his final act before he leaves office. , ~ ,. , in his final act before he leaves office. , i. , in his final act before he leaves office. ,. ,. , in his final act before he leaves office. , i. ,. ,. , theresa may has accused borisjohnson of abandoning the uks moral leadership on the world stage. The former Prime Minister said threatening to break International Law during the brexit negotiations and cutting overseas aid reduced the uks global credibility. Our Political Correspondent adam fleming joins us now from westminster. Good morning. We will be speaking to the home secretary in half an hour on this programme. It is a pretty withering assessment by the former Prime Minister of mrjohnson . Yes. Prime minister of mrjohnson . Yes, althouih Prime Minister of mrjohnson . Yes, although she Prime Minister of mrjohnson . Yes, although she does Prime Minister of mrjohnson . Yes, although she does not Prime Minister of mrjohnson . Isis although she does not mention him Prime Minister of mrjohnson . I2 although she does not mention him by name. This is a broad, general criticism of politicians around the world that she calls the strong men, who put their own personalities and their own needs ahead of the problem is theyre meant to be solving together. Its a call for this to be a new era of compromise, which would be quite different from the previous era. There are eye catching things in there about her experience with donald trump. In terms of her specific criticism of the reddish government, she zeroed in on two things. The british government. Number one, that threat to overall parts of the brexit deal last year and the decision a few weeks ago to reduce the amount of foreign aid government spends to spend that money at home instead of fighting covid. She says if you take those things together, that reduces the uk plasma credibility on the world stage. And people willjudge this country on what it does and that is how britain earns its role in the world. It is interesting because whenever theresa may is down to speak in the house of commons, i tune in because every time she speaks, she does Say Something quite critical of the government. Last week, she was saying there was a threat to the union between england, scotland and wales and Northern Ireland. A few weeks before that, she was criticising michael gove about the security situation and the risk to security because of brexit. That is just a function of our politics now, when people leave office, and the turbulence of it now, there are quite a lot of axis around. We will speak to you later on, i know you will be listening to priti patel as well. More than 40 Flood Warnings and nearly 170 flood alerts are now in force across england as large parts of the country brace themselves for torrential rainfall from storm christoph. Major incidents have been declared in Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire, while waterlogged tracks have caused disruption on the rail network overnight. One area preparing for the worst is todmorden in West Yorkshire. Our reporter luxmy gopal is there this morning. Luxmy, whats the situation there . We can see that the river levels are high. What is the latest . Goad high. What is the latest . Good mornini. High. What is the latest . Good morning. Yes, high. What is the latest . Good morning. Yes, the high. What is the latest . Good morning. Yes, the river high. What is the latest . Good morning. Yes, the river calder| high. What is the latest . Good l morning. Yes, the river calder is flowing past me, and have a look at how high the water level is and how fast it is flowing. When this area flooded last february, the river levels rose above the bridge, the river overtop the bridge which gives you an idea of why the prospect of flooding is so worrying the people here. Now there is a Flood Warning in place here and overnight across the Calder Valley, flood wardens were out checking the river levels. Last night the flood siren sounded in a nearby village. Luckily the flooding anticipated did not happen overnight but it is expected to peak at 6pm today for this area. There are a yellow weather warnings for pretty much the entire country and thatis pretty much the entire country and that is for travel disruption with Rail Services disrupted or cancelled a Northern Rail is advising passengers to check before they make theirjourney. People here have been making preparations, as have people across parts of the northeast and Central England where the warnings are in place. There are sandbags stacked up against the doors of all the houses down this road here because they know what could potentially happen because it has happened before. People are being reassured that lockdown rules to allow for them to leave their homes if they are evacuated. In the meantime, its a waiting game as people nervously watch the falling rain and the rising river level. What we can do is bring people the weather in a moment. Some sad news to bring you now, one of britains oldest twins doris hobday, who weve spoken to a few times before on this programme, has died aged 96. Doris and her sister lil fell ill with coronavirus two weeks ago and were admitted to hospital. In a statement her family said we are totally heartbroken as a family to lose doris in this way, but we are so grateful for all the special memories we have created and got to share with you all. Lil has now been discharged and is continuing her recovery at home. That is very sad news. Looking at a bit more of that statement from the family, they say, our thoughts go out to the families for all those who have experienced loss through covid and we urge people to take it seriously. They say, doris was only a few weeks from being safe, her vaccine letter arrived two days after her death. They say, people should take the vaccine and do not refuse it, doris, they say, didnt get the choice. We have been talking about the weather, all the details, and snow on the way . Indeed, a bit of everything today. A covering in scotland today and more tonight, but the immediate concern is rainfall, 18 hours of rain in some parts of england and wales today, further flooding expected. All of the latest warnings are on the website. Flood warnings in place in the midlands and Northern England, further rain to come here and in england and wales it will be the wettest, and a bit of snow on the wettest, and a bit of snow on the southern options. Wetter in the east anglia and southeast region, windy conditions, touching gale force at times. But mild compared to the west of scotland and Northern Ireland where there will be centring around. There will be some snow in the far north of scotland. We have lighter winds in the north, strong winds in the south, gail is in the south and east tonight. There are gales in the south and east. Snow for a time in the high ground of wales, but more in the eastern part of scotland. A cold night with frost and ice anywhere tomorrow morning. Tomorrow morning we could see blizzards develop across eastern scotland, after 20 centimetres of snow in the Southern Uplands, 40 on the grampians. Low level snow in other parts of eastern scotland and the strong winds will be blowing it around. Rain along the coast so this will be the area concern tomorrow. Elsewhere dry and bright, a few scattered showers, sunshine and feeling colder. Even though the persistent rain has stopped, river levels could still be responding for a few days. Thank you. Very important to listen this morning because there are important things that we have been saying about storm christoph for the last two days. President trumps time in the white house comes to an end today after a turbulent four years in office. In the biggest security operation in history, for a president ial inauguration, much of the us capitol has been fenced off following riots by mr trumps supporters a fortnight ago. Were joined now by the former security advisor to president obama, amy pope, and brian klass, whos a us politics professor. Good morning, thank you forjoining us. Amy you are very well placed to talk to us about what is a huge security operation. Tell us about what the priorities are and what the importance of this is. It is what the priorities are and what the importance of this is. Importance of this is. It is hugely important. Importance of this is. It is hugely important, particularly importance of this is. It is hugely important, particularly because l importance of this is. It is hugely i important, particularly because you are in a situation where you have an incoming president and Vice President , you are going to have justices of the supreme court, key members of congress, so the country is very vulnerable at that moment to have so many key legislators and members of the new cabinet and outgoing cabinet all there at one point. Security officials are going to be on very high alert. We know already there have been a series of threats about the inauguration, there is increased security even beyond the traditional inauguration. Theyre taking measurements that they dont always take, but because of the heightened concerns. That includes looking of the heightened concerns. That includes looking into the background of people who are part of that security operation. Of people who are part of that security operation. Thats right, and they have security operation. Thats right, and they have already security operation. Thats right, and they have already removed | and they have already removed National Guard troops because of concerns about their affiliations, and what they may have done and said. This is the kind of activity we would normally see with foreign nationals. The United States does regularly screen foreign nationals for this kind of activity but here we are talking about americans, people serving in the National Guard, so it is a whole new level. Brian, thank you for coming on the programme as well. There is a lot of focus on what is happening today, and quite a bit of what we saw happening at the Capitol Building a few weeks ago. More broadly, over that four years of donald trump in office, how do you think in years to come, we will assess his administration . I come, we will assess his administration . Come, we will assess his administration . , , , administration . I think hes going to be remembered administration . I think hes going to be remembered as administration . I think hes going to be remembered as somebody. Administration . I think hes going i to be remembered as somebody who divided to be remembered as somebody who divided americans, who damaged american divided americans, who damaged american democracy, and who decimated americas image abroad. You see decimated americas image abroad. You see him leaving office with a 34 approval rating, the lowest in modem 34 approval rating, the lowest in modern history, around the level that nixon modern history, around the level that nixon left with in disgrace in the i970s~ that nixon left with in disgrace in the 1970s. He never cracked more than the 1970s. He never cracked more than 50 the 1970s. He never cracked more than 50 approval ratings, the first president than 50 approval ratings, the first president to not do that since 1938 when president to not do that since 1938 when polling began. His legacy is notjust when polling began. His legacy is notjust being unpopular, its also about notjust being unpopular, its also about the notjust being unpopular, its also about the insurrection that happened about the insurrection that happened a fortnight about the insurrection that happened a fortnight ago, its also about the mismanagement of the covid pandemic which has mismanagement of the covid pandemic which has caused 400,000 americans to die, which has caused 400,000 americans to die, and which has caused 400,000 americans to die, and also you have things like images like the kids detained, separated like images like the kids detained, separated from their parents at the border, separated from their parents at the border, the charlottesville comments, very fine people at both sides comments, very fine people at both sides a comments, very fine people at both sides a lot comments, very fine people at both sides. A lot of these things have had lasting implications for us standing in the world. His supporters will praise getting a lot of republicanjudges supporters will praise getting a lot of republican judges onto the bench, and they of republican judges onto the bench, and they will also point to the suppression of isis on his watch as benefits suppression of isis on his watch as benefits of suppression of isis on his watch as benefits of the Trump Administration but i suspect that 100 years from now but i suspect that 100 years from now. You but i suspect that 100 years from now, you will open a textbook and a lot of now, you will open a textbook and a lot of it now, you will open a textbook and a lot of it will now, you will open a textbook and a lot of it will be about the twice impeached, unpopular, divisive president impeached, unpopular, divisive president. . , impeached, unpopular, divisive president. , i. , impeached, unpopular, divisive president impeached, unpopular, divisive president. , i ,. , president. Talking about 100 years, lets look at president. Talking about 100 years, lets look at the president. Talking about 100 years, lets look at the first president. Talking about 100 years, lets look at the first 100 president. Talking about 100 years, lets look at the first 100 days i president. Talking about 100 years, lets look at the first 100 days for i lets look at the first 100 days for the new president joe biden. There will be a lot of activity, what will be his Top Priorities . Will be a lot of activity, what will be his Top Priorities . There will be two things. Be his Top Priorities . There will be two things. One be his Top Priorities . There will be two things, one is be his Top Priorities . There will be two things, one is repairing i two things, one is repairing americas two things, one is repairing americas image in the world, and one is americas image in the world, and one is americas at home, repairing one is americas at home, repairing america at home particularly in the pandemic. He is going particularly in the pandemic. He is going to particularly in the pandemic. He is going to reinstate america in the paris going to reinstate america in the paris Climate Change court today, and on paris Climate Change court today, and on top paris Climate Change court today, and on top of that he will have an effort and on top of that he will have an effort to and on top of that he will have an effort to get 100 million vaccines into 100 effort to get 100 million vaccines into 100 million americans in the first 100 into 100 million americans in the first 100 days. That combined with a massive first 100 days. That combined with a massive covid relief package, trying to undo massive covid relief package, trying to undo some of the economic damage of the to undo some of the economic damage of the pandemic. And you will see a lot of of the pandemic. And you will see a lot of priorities aimed at rolling back lot of priorities aimed at rolling back some of the things that donald trump back some of the things that donald trump did back some of the things that donald trump did. For example, reuniting children trump did. For example, reuniting children who were taken away from their parents when they were detained at the border. Trying to undo detained at the border. Trying to undo the detained at the border. Trying to undo the trump legacy but also focusing undo the trump legacy but also focusing on the pandemic and st of the world focusing on the pandemic and st of the world that america is back the way that the world that america is back the way that the world that america is back the way that saying to the world that america way that saying to the world that america is way that saying to the world that america is back the way you thought they were america is back the way you thought they were before the last four years they were before the last four ears. ~ they were before the last four ears. ,i. , they were before the last four ears. I ,i. ,. , , years. We spoke to a republican iollster years. We spoke to a republican pollster about years. We spoke to a republican pollster about an years. We spoke to a republican pollster about an hour ago i years. We spoke to a republican pollster about an hour ago and l years. We spoke to a republican l pollster about an hour ago and he said he has never in all his time watching politics and watching people in the us seen the country so upset and divided and intolerant. That means, as we have heard, there is so much importance on those first few speeches from joe biden, what he said last night when he got quite emotional, what he will say today. You know him well, can he repair some of that damage . I you know him well, can he repair some of that damage . You know him well, can he repair some of that damage . I think hes the best placed some of that damage . I think hes the best placed of some of that damage . I think hes the best placed of anyone some of that damage . I think hes the best placed of anyone to i some of that damage . I think hes| the best placed of anyone to repair the best placed of anyone to repair the damage. At heart, hes a moderate. He has a long history of representing the people of delaware, working with congress. He has strong relationships with republicans, and hes not going to push legislation immediately that pushes to the left, hes going to look for consensus and ways to build some coherent and cooperative policies. But the real issueis cooperative policies. But the real issue is where the republicans are going to be. If the republicans take a stance, as they did when barack obama first became president , that they are going to limit him at every turn and vote against every initiative that he offers, then its going to create good luck once again. And i think that will only feed the frustration create gridlock once again and that will only feed the frustration in the United States. Just only feed the frustration in the United States. United states. Just a brief conversation United States. Just a brief conversation about i United States. Just a brief i conversation about pardons, at United States. Just a brief conversation about pardons, at this point in the presidency a president gives ad pardons and we know President Trump has been doing that including one for example, to his chief strategist, former strategist steve bannon. What you think is the impact of that . Impact of that . Donald trump has iardoned impact of that . Donald trump has pardoned fewer impact of that . Donald trump has pardoned fewer people impact of that . Donald trump has pardoned fewer people than i impact of that . Donald trump has pardoned fewer people than his i pardoned fewer people than his predecessors but people he has chosen predecessors but people he has chosen to predecessors but people he has chosen to pardon a dramatically different chosen to pardon a dramatically different. Most president s go to a standard different. Most president s go to a standard process where they are independently verified by another committee. But trump has mostly pardoned committee. But trump has mostly pardoned cronies and celebrities, people pardoned cronies and celebrities, people who will benefit donald trump if they people who will benefit donald trump if they are people who will benefit donald trump if they are pardoned. His latest is more if they are pardoned. His latest is more of if they are pardoned. His latest is more of the same, rappers, people in his orbit. More of the same, rappers, people in his orbit, hype profile people who high his orbit, hype profile people who high profile people who can afford high profile people who can afford lobbyists to get the president s here. That is a drastic change president s here. That is a drastic change from the past pardon power. He has change from the past pardon power. He has not change from the past pardon power. He has not pardoned himself or his family he has not pardoned himself or his family members, apparently his lawyers family members, apparently his lawyers dissuaded him from doing that lawyers dissuaded him from doing that. There are still several hours left in that. There are still several hours left in the that. There are still several hours left in the Trump Presidency and you are always left in the Trump Presidency and you are always waiting for surprises that donald trump so we will see. Well that donald trump so we will see. Well be that donald trump so we will see. Well be speaking to the home secretary in ten minutes here. There are domestic issues that will be high on the agenda forjoe biden. I wonder what youre feeling is about the relationship between the us and the relationship between the us and the uk Going Forward and how valued thatis the uk Going Forward and how valued that is from the american side of things . That is from the american side of thinis . I. , that is from the american side of thinis . ,. , i. , things . Incredibly valued. I know there has been things . Incredibly valued. There has been a lot of press about there has been a lot of press about the relationship with borisjohnson, but that is not the wayjoe biden works. I have seen him in action, he puts aside the personnel, and find its way to connect with people. The uk is an important partner to the us for so many reasons, and its not going to be one in which the relationship breaks down because of personalities. I expect that we will see a return to partnership, cooperation and shared goals. We appreciate your time, this morning, both of you. I know you have a busy day ahead. That inauguration will be about 5p an hour time and there will be continued coverage right throughout the day on bbc news about five p m in our time. That is coming u i , minutes on the show. That is coming u, as is minutes on the show. That is coming up. As is the minutes on the show. That is coming up, as is the weather. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning from bbc london. Im alpa patel. 1,700 fixed penalty notices have been handed out to people not wearing face coverings on londons transport network. Transport for london has stepped up its patrols and is expanding its team of enforcement officers. Its been mandatory to wear a facemask on london trasnport for seven months, but officers are still finding a minority breaking the rules. Transport for london has ditched plans to permanently make its tube, 0verground and dlr stations cashless. Ticket machines at more than 200 stations were made cashless during the summer. But the the decision was criticised by mp5 and Campaign Groups who said it would have left a large number of people reliant on newsagents to top up their oyster cards. An emergency call handler paralysed from the waist down is attempting to walk one mile to raise money for the London Ambulance service. Sean ash from bexley thought hed never walk again when he was diagnosed with a rare spinal condition last year. But hes now already completed half a mile, raising more than £6,000. He will walk the other half later this week. Iam i am literally going to be walking for everyone who has a spinal cord injury. Im walking for all of our nhs workers who are battling day in, day out, to help coronavirus patients across this country, and im also going to be walking for everyone who has lost their life and for their families grieving and going through bereavement lets take a look at the travel situation now. On the tube, a good Service Across all lines apart from the waterloo city line which is cloosed for the time being on the trains still delays on south western services which are disrupted between woking and wimbledon due to track circuit failure on the roads delays on the a2 westbound through the roadworks at the danson interchange on the north circular there are still westbound queues from Palmers Green into the roadworks after bounds green road west green road is closed between green lanes and stanmore road due to an incident good morning. Im back in an hour. Bye for now. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. It is just approaching 7. 30. Borisjohnson has said he is looking forward to working closely Withjoe Biden as americas president elect prepares to take office. So what will the new relationship look like . Lets speak to the home secretary, priti patel. Good morning, thank you very much for being with us. I wasnt working on the day when you are speaking to bbc breakfast a few weeks ago where you are one of the first to publicly condemn the violence that we saw at the Capitol Building in washington. I wonder this morning, will you be pleased to see the back of President Trump . Pleased to see the back of president trum i . I i, i,. Pleased to see the back of president trum i . I. ,. , i , pleased to see the back of president trumi . I ,. , pleased to see the back of president trum i . I. ,. , i ,. ,. , trump . Well, look, this is a new era now in us politics, trump . Well, look, this is a new era now in us politics, and trump . Well, look, this is a new era now in us politics, and with trump . Well, look, this is a new era now in us politics, and with the i now in us politics, and with the Incoming Administration and the inauguration today, it is a very big moment. Foramerica inauguration today, it is a very big moment. For america and also for the world, and i think we should put this into context of what we saw two weeks ago with those protests, and obviously the violence that then unfolded. The fact of the matter is for us in the United Kingdom, we have an incredible relationship with the United States. We are stronger together in terms of our alliances. There are so many issues and challenges the world faces and we will continue to work in a positive and proactive manner with the new incoming Biden Administration. 50 incoming Biden Administration. So will you be pleased to see the back of trump . Will you be pleased to see the back of trumi . I. Will you be pleased to see the back of trum i . I. Will you be pleased to see the back oftrum . His administration, and we have to look forwards and not go backwards. But in terms of assessing what we have seen over the turbulent last for years, you are very outspoken on that violence of two weeks ago. How do you assess his administration and the relationship that we have with, as you said, this important relationship with the United StatesGoing Forward . I relationship with the United StatesGoing Forward . Going forward . I think in terms of the overall Going Forward . I think in terms of the overall assessment Going Forward . I think in terms of the overall assessment with Going Forward . I think in terms of the overall assessment with our l the overall assessment with our relationship, it is very strong, it is a special relationship that we have had the United States. That will continue. Our Prime Minister has been in touch with president elect biden, and there are big global challenges that both our countries face, that the world faces, and this will be an exciting time for us to work with the new president. In terms of the Trump Administration, we have worked with his administration in a very positive and proactive way, at a time when the world has faced a number of challenges. First of all coronavirus over the last 12 months, but when you look at the health and well being of the world, some of the big challenges in the middle east, the Trump Administration has been very strong on some of those issues and we have worked with the administration dealing with some of those awful abhorrent issues, terrorism, threats to our own National Security and also some of the bigger challenges we have seen in the world linked to this pandemic and also strengthening global institutions. These are issues that obviously persist, and we will continue to work with thejoe Biden Administration on many of these challenges. Administration on many of these challenges administration on many of these challenues. ,. ,. , challenges. Can i ask you about the relationship challenges. Can i ask you about the relationship between challenges. Can i ask you about the relationship between president challenges. Can i ask you about the l relationship between President Biden as will be later on today and our own Prime Minister . Borisjohnson in the past has had a close allegiance with donald trump. He once said he was as much a candidate for a Nobel Peace Prize as barack obama, and he talked about him having many qualities. And when asked about our own Prime Minister, joe biden called him a physical and emotional clone of donald trump. How important is that relationship going to be, and where do you thinkjoe biden sees our Prime Minister . Where do you thinkjoe biden sees our Prime Minister . Where do you thinkjoe biden sees our Prime Minister . Well, i think it is not for me our Prime Minister . Well, i think it is not for me to our Prime Minister . Well, i think it is not for me to comment our Prime Minister . Well, i think it is not for me to comment about. Our Prime Minister . Well, i think it. Is not for me to comment about how joe biden may view our Prime Minister or our government. The fact of the matter is we have a strong working relationship. The Prime Minister and president elect biden have already been in touch, they have already been in touch, they have already been in touch, they have already spoken and had discussions about leading the world on many of the shared challenges that we all face. We face these as two strong, healthy democracies, two Global Leaders when it comes to international values, our place in the world, how we work bilaterally, multilateral institutions, that is going to continue and go from strength to strength. And i say that within the context of uk leadership right now as well. We are holding the presidency of the g7 this year, we are hosting cop26, we hold the chair of the general security council, and we will naturally work with the Us Administration on all of these but also together with some of these but also together with some of the many other challenges i should say, post coronavirus, post pandemic, and how we can absolutely strengthen our institutions and global ways of working on a range of areas. find institutions and global ways of working on a range of areas. And in terms of the working on a range of areas. And in terms of the uk working on a range of areas. And in terms of the uk on working on a range of areas. And in terms of the uk on a working on a range of areas. And in terms of the uk on a global working on a range of areas. And in terms of the uk on a global stage, | terms of the uk on a global stage, im sure you have seen the comments from former Prime Minister theresa may on the front page of some of the newspapers this morning. She has spoken about the uk and particularly the Prime Minister abandoning the moral leadership on the world stage, talking particularly about the willingness to break International Law and the foreign aid budget as well. Is she right . Have we lost our way internationally in terms of our moral code . Moral code . Absolutely not. And i should say. Moral code . Absolutely not. And i should say, theresa moral code . Absolutely not. And i should say, theresa may, moral code . Absolutely not. And i should say, theresa may, when i moral code . Absolutely not. And i l should say, theresa may, when she was pro minister, achieved a great deal. Yes, internationally and domestically, but the fact of the matter is, when the Prime Minister was foreign secretary, he was the architect of that Global Britain vision about the United Kingdom being more open and and innovative Global Partner on many of these international challenges, both bilaterally and multilaterally, and in fact both he and i used to work on these in government, so we have not lost our way, and as i said, we have the chair of the un security council, the presidency of the g7. We will be leading the way on the climate at cop26, and those are personal issues, the Prime Minister himself has been a passionate advocate of things like girls education, look at the work we are doing internationally on the covax vaccine, and these are issues going on right now as we speak, but we dont talk about them on a day to day basis because we are focused on coronavirus and the domestic challenges we have right now, protecting the nhs. But we are absolutely clear as a country, as a nation, the leadership he gives us internationally that we are a force for good in the world, and that is effectively what Global Britain is all about. , effectively what Global Britain is allabout. ,. ,. , all about. And ust finally on the relationship all about. And just finally on the relationship with all about. And just finally on the relationship with the all about. And just finally on the relationship with the american l relationship with the american president to be, joe biden, how quickly do you think there might be some sort of trade deal organised given that you said this morning has special that relationship is . For the third time in this new year, a Record Number of fatalities from coronavirus, 1610. They will be people watching this morning who have lost friends, family members, people who, everyone watching has been affected by this in some way, and it seems that within the next week or so, we will pass the grim figure of 100,000 deaths from coronavirus. Can you as home secretary this morning, can you put into some sort of scale, some sort of context, the scale of this tragedy . I of context, the scale of this tragedy . Of context, the scale of this traced . , m, of context, the scale of this traced . ,. , tragedy . I put this in the scale of the tragedy tragedy . I put this in the scale of the tragedy that tragedy . I put this in the scale of the tragedy that every tragedy . I put this in the scale of the tragedy that every single tragedy . I put this in the scale of the tragedy that every single life | the tragedy that every single life lost, every single death, is a personal and human tragedy. As you yourself have said, so many people have been touched, all of our lives have been touched, all of our lives have been touched and altered by coronavirus, which is why we are in the Current Situation of having a national lockdown, why you have heard me say before, as have many of your viewers as well, we have to absolutely focus on sticking with the coronavirus rules, staying at home, stopping the spread of this deadly, deadly, dreadfulvirus and disease, and as you have said as well, dan, look at the pressures on our nhs. We see the nhs day in, day out, i was on patroljust on monday in Central London at guys and sent thomases hospital in london, incredible work going on there treating patients and also being part of the vaccine roll out programme, and none of us can say hand on heart that we are out of the woods yet. We have a long way to go. The vaccine roll out is a positive step forward but we obviously have to vaccinate a significant number of the population. That work is taking place. But every single death is a tragedy. Families lives have been torn apart by coronavirus as we all know, and this whole pandemic has affected families at home and abroad in a harrowing and devastating way. Home secretary, if we look at the comparable figures, we have double the death rate of spain or germany. Why is it so bad in the uk, and has it been mismanaged by your government . It been mismanaged by your rovernment . ~. , ~ it been mismanaged by your rovernment . ~. , ~ , government . Well, i dont think this is the time to government . Well, i dont think this is the time to talk government . Well, i dont think this is the time to talk about is the time to talk about mismanagement. We have been in this pandemic for a year now, and its a Global Pandemic across the world. Governments respond very differently, we have seen that, across the world, but based on the facts, the science, the evidence that has effectively presented to us as decision makers. The fact of the matter is we have seen deaths around the world, harrowing death tolls around the world. But the world, harrowing death tolls around the world. The world, harrowing death tolls around the world. But the uks is one of the around the world. But the uks is one of the worst, around the world. But the uks is one of the worst, the around the world. But the uks is one of the worst, the worst around the world. But the uks is one of the worst, the worst in one of the worst, the worst in europe and the fifth worst on the global stage. Europe and the fifth worst on the globalstage. But europe and the fifth worst on the global stage global stage. But they will be a ranre global stage. But they will be a ranae of global stage. But they will be a range of reasons global stage. But they will be a range of reasons for global stage. But they will be a range of reasons for that, global stage. But they will be a range of reasons for that, they | range of reasons for that, they wont be one specific reason. In the United Kingdom, we see certain cohorts that have been affected by coronavirus. We see people with comorbidities dying from this virus, being more susceptible to this virus, so they will be a range of reasons. And government has responded as facts change, as information changes, working with scientists and medics, working with professionals who give guidance throughout this, so there is no one reason as to why we have an appalling death toll. The numbers are deeply tragic, and this is a human tragedy across the world and at home. And as i have said, they will be a wide range of reasons, and im sure in the future we will all look back, and we will look with a degree of humility i would say as well as to perhaps measures that could have been taken. Some measures we may not have even taken right now, and we understand a look at why that may have been the case. If you dont mind. That may have been the case. If you dont mind, could that may have been the case. If you dont mind, could we that may have been the case. If you dont mind, could we look that may have been the case. If you dont mind, could we look back that may have been the case. If you dont mind, could we look back with a little humility this morning. If you look down at locking down too late, the supply of ppe, the failure to protect care homes, the test and trade system which was set up in march, abandoned in april. There has been more than £20 billion spent on that and it still hasnt been effectively working. We are and only now asking foreign travellers to get a negative test before they arrive in the uk. Been a lack of clarity of clarity over regulations. A lot of talk about lockdowns coming too late. And though some of the factors that lead to why we are approaching 100,000 deaths in the uk . I that lead to why we are approaching 100,000 deaths in the uk . 100,000 deaths in the uk . I dont think that is 100,000 deaths in the uk . I dont think that is the 100,000 deaths in the uk . I dont think that is the right 100,000 deaths in the uk . I dont think that is the right way think that is the right way contextualise this at all. The government has listened to a range of advice and followed advice from professional advisers, medical of advice and followed advice from professionaladvisers, medicaland scientific, from day one of this pandemic, and that has been collective Decision Making across the board. I pay tribute to many of those who have been working alongside the government, particularly from the health side, who have been very much leading the government response. When it comes to border measures, for example, there was a lot of work that took place last year, both in transport and in the home office but also working with the scientists who advised us at the time when coronavirus was incredibly high that it would not have made a difference to have taken border measures. When it came to lockdown, again, we listened to advice from those who made recommendations, and we make decisions of that time, and as evidence changes in circumstances change, decisions change, and lockdown is change and the tiers change, and the fact is that we have all been, with humility, if i may say so, we have learned through this pandemic, we have all learned, and it is notjust this government, it is governments around the world, we have all adapted and adjusted our responses to the changing circumstances of this pandemic. There are a couple of other things i would like to talk about this morning. One is the leak of police information, and there is more than 400,000 fingerprint, dna and arrest records which have gone from those police databases. Can you update our viewers this morning on what the Current Situation is with that, how much of that has been recovered and what sort of damage has been done. At this stage, we are still washing for the data, and we are applying new coding to the Police National computer in terms of retrieving records. We dont have an update on the number of records. Primarily because this isntjust one computer, there are other systems that are linked to this computer, and there are multiple records relating to individuals, cases, policing records. What i can say first of all this at the Police National computer is working, so data can be uploaded and the police and security people in particular can use the system. We will absolutely provide updates once we know what has happened in terms of retrieving data. This will take time because it is a coding error. It is a coding system error that materialised. And im also clear with home Office Engineers and technicians if we have to do manual uploads from other systems, that is effectively what we will do, and that will potentially take time, but that will potentially take time, but thatis that will potentially take time, but that is another option for us right now. But i cant sit here and give you the numbers, because this is a new code that has been applied to the Police National computer and has taken time for that code to flush through the data. You taken time for that code to flush through the data. Through the data. You are also sueakin through the data. You are also speaking today through the data. You are also speaking today about through the data. You are also speaking today about a through the data. You are also. Speaking today about a crackdown through the data. You are also speaking today about a crackdown on drug crime specifically. I remember reporting on this programme there was a Record Number of drug related deaths back in the year of 2018. So why is this a priority now, home secretary . Why is this a priority now, home secreta . ,. , secretary . There are a number of reasons. Secretary . There are a number of reasons i secretary . There are a number of reasons. I made secretary . There are a number of reasons. I made it secretary . There are a number of reasons. I made it my secretary . There are a number of reasons. I made it my priority secretary . There are a number of reasons. I made it my priority is l reasons. I made it my priority is home secretary over the last year to focus on rolling out what i call county lines drug gangs, so drug gangs has become a phenomena over the last few years were particularly Young Children are being used to transport drugs, be in gangs, and we see far too much devastation across the country with the impact of drugs and also Young Children being preyed upon. We have had amazing Law Enforcement results over the last yearin enforcement results over the last year in terms of thousands of drug lines being rolled up, but it isnt just about that. Matt hancock and i have come together to look at how we can provide a wider package where we work with local authorities, health providers, to provide drug rehabilitation, something we have not been doing enough of, i will be candid about that. This is the largest sum of money going into rehab programmes, dealing with addition, the largest sum of money in 15 years, so we have five pilot programmes taking place, this is part of our levelling up agenda. But we have to do much more to support individuals whose lives have been blighted by years and years of drug abuse. We have a high number of drug debts in this country as you yourself are referred to, and this is the start of a new way of working on drug rehabilitation while at the same time we crackdown on the Law Enforcement side through rolling up county lines drug gangs. We enforcement side through rolling up county lines drug gangs. County lines drug gangs. We are out of time, county lines drug gangs. We are out of time. Home county lines drug gangs. We are out of time, home secretary, county lines drug gangs. We are out of time, home secretary, we of time, home secretary, we appreciate you speaking to us live on the programme this morning. Priti patel, thank you. 7. 46. Sallys got the sport for us this morning. It couldnt happen again, could it . Leicester city are top of the premier league this morning, five years after they won the league title at odds of 5,000 to one. They beat chelsea 2 0, Wilfried Ndidi and James Maddison got the goals. They go one point ahead of Manchester United at the top and managed to mostly keep their celebrations socially distant. West ham united are only six points off the top after winning in last nights other premier league match. They beat west brom 2 1 at the london stadium, with the winner coming from michail antonio. The hammers are seventh and have won four in a row in all competitions. Southampton finally secured their passage into this weekends fourth round of the fa cup. A covid outbreak at League One Shrewsbury meant the two sides had to wait to face each other in the last of the third round ties, but southampton won 2 0 in the end. Shrewsbury were being led by their assistant, their boss Steve Cotterill is in hospital having spent time in intensive care with the virus. Two more Australian Open players have tested positive for coronavirus. And another non playing member of staff has also tested positive, bringing the total number of cases associated with the tournament to ten. More than 70 players and their teams have been confined to their hotel rooms for a fortnight. After passengers on three charter flights returned positive tests. A number of players have complained about the conditions. Those complaints have not gone down particularly well with People Living in australia, where of course the rules are particularly strict. They are. Sally, thank you very much. The weather here in the uk has been an interesting topic of discussion. It always is, but particularly at the moment because there are a few warnings out there, and the picture behind you tells an interesting story, doesnt it chris white it does indeed, this was from yesterday. Storm christoph is still with us, some of the wettest places so far have been across no dhoni in north wales, but areas of Northern England seen close to a month of rain, and there is still potentially up rain, and there is still potentially up to 18 hours of rainfall to come in some parts. Met Office Amber Weather Warning remains in place at the moment, same areas as yesterday across the north and east midlands, yorkshire, lancashire around the southern pennines and yorkshire dales. Details on the bbc weather website and app, but even though that warning will lapse as we go into tomorrow, there is a time lag between rain falling on it pushing through the river system. Let me show you this timeline from the Environment Agency going all the way from wednesday through to saturday. Of from wednesday through to saturday. Of more immediate concern at the moment are parts of the north west, the ribble and so on, but even when the ribble and so on, but even when the rain stops, the bulk of it by tomorrow morning, notice how we go through into friday and saturday, some rivers will still be responding. Parts of yorkshire, the lower ouse, and the likes of the nene, the great ouse, they could keep rising, so keep an eye on the Flood Warnings wherever you are. This is the cloud from storm christoph as seen from space. Some snow has fallen across northern scotland overnight, some more to come across the Southern Uplands, the grampians and the murray as well. The bulk of the rain, england and wales, most persistent in the west but were today in the midlands. Staying fairly mild across england and wales but with strong and gusty winds touching gale force around some southern coasts, colder air remains in place for scotland and Northern Ireland, though parts of Northern Ireland, though parts of Northern Ireland, though parts of Northern Ireland, west of scotland, will stay dry and bright. As we go into this evening overnight, at long last the rain will be started to shift its way eastwards. Still some heavy rain to the first part of the night, turning into snow over the Higher Ground of wales, Peak District, pennines, too, and as it goes eastwards we will see Gale Force Winds across much of southern and eastern england. At the same time, snow will become more of a feature into tonight and tomorrow morning across eastern parts of scotland. As much as five centimetres, may be more at lower levels, but on the hills, a lot of snow expected, blown around by strong winds and we could see some blizzards as we head into the first half of tomorrow, rain around the coast. Furthersouth, half of tomorrow, rain around the coast. Further south, we go into tomorrow with a lot more sunshine, just a few showers, but snow and rain continue across the north east of scotland. Back to you both. Thank you very much, see you in half an hour. Over the last few months, we have covered lots of Inspiring Stories on this programme. Here is another one. London ambulance call handler sean ash thought he may never walk again when he was diagnosed with a rare spinal condition last august. But after surgery and rehab sean has been able to take some small steps with a frame and now hes determined to go even further. What a trooper adjusting to life under lockdown has been challenging for many of us so weve been enlisting the help of some familiar faces to give us some tips on how to cope during these tough times. This morning, werejoined by professional rock climber and olympic hopeful shauna coxsey. Lets take a look at her in action. A very good morning to you. So, how has it been for you, because obviously training for an olympics in this kind of environment is tougher than normal, isnt it . Good mornini , tougher than normal, isnt it . Good morning. Yes, the olympics was postponed, and my wedding got cancelled, and we went into lockdown kind of all on the same day. So it was quite a lot to take on. But im kind of one of those really irritatingly positive people whos always like, ok, what can we pick out of this, how can we see the good, and what can we do to make this a positive situation . So that wasnt easy, but i think we have done quite well. That that wasnt easy, but i think we have done quite well. That wasnt easy, but i think we have done quite well. Yes, i have looked at how i stay motivated and you set them . Yes, i have looked at how i stay motivated and positive, i how i stay motivated and positive, it is something ive struggled in the past to be able to articulate, but now i have really turned my focus on to being able to share that both with my friends and my family, but also my community as well, so i appreciate that it is incredibly hard for people in lockdown to stay motivated and train, and i think my first tip would be to set goals that are relevant to what you have available, so obviouslyjust setting goals where you want to go and climb a mountain in a different country, thatis a mountain in a different country, that is quite far in the future right now, and hard to visualise, but they can be little goals that are achievable within your household. 50 are achievable within your household. Yes, so ive just got some stretches but i think i just got some stretches but i think are relevant to climbing, and just for everybody in general, so im going to try to get this set up. So these are table stretches that i think people can do at home, so one is for your shoulders and then one is for your shoulders and then one is for your legs and then one is for your glutes and your hips. So first of all, put your hands on the table and try to get your shoulders straight, so reaching really far back, and stretching through here. I recommend having clean socks or clean feet for this one, because you have to put your feet on the table. Go on, then 50 have to put your feet on the table. Go on. Then have to put your feet on the table. Go on, then so foot on one side of the table and go on, then so foot on one side of the table and then go on, then so foot on one side of the table and then leaning go on, then so foot on one side of the table and then leaning into i go on, then so foot on one side of the table and then leaning into it, i the table and then leaning into it, and feel the stretch in your hamstring, and you can bend your leg and lean into it this way. It is great for climbers but also for anyone who uses their legs a lot, and i know a lot of people are training at home right now. And then the third one is to put your leg on the third one is to put your leg on the table so you are trying to get your ankle and your knee in contact with the table and saying straight on, and then you can lean forwards into this one, and you will feel a good stretch. Into this one, and you will feel a good stretch good stretch. Shauna, they look amazini. Good stretch. Shauna, they look amazing we good stretch. Shauna, they look amazing. We will good stretch. His successorjoe biden speaks of the need to heal the nation as he prepares to be sworn in. The former Prime Minister, theresa may, has accused borisjohnson of abandoning britains position of global moral leadership. A volatile situation. Flood warnings rise as storm christoph gives parts of the uk an overnight drenching. There could be another 18 hours of rain to fall in some areas, river levels will then rise after that and we have snow in eastern scotland, i will have all the details. Could forgotten freelancers finally be brought in to Government Support schemes . The covid tax system faces heavy criticism and is given six weeks to turn things around. The reflecting pool at the National Mall was [it up for the 400,000 people who have lost their lives. Then a touching tribute from a nurse who works on the front line. And there are up to 23,000 troops from the National Guard had to make sure that everything goes to plan following those deadly riots that happened on capitol hill earlier this month. The inauguration ceremony itself is pretty straightforward, or it should be. The timings are very specific. The only crucial time people need to know about is 12pm my time, which is 5pm uk time, because it is in the constitution, at that pointjoe biden becomes the next president of the us. And with him, he takes his first everfemale vice the us. And with him, he takes his first ever female Vice President , Kamala Harris, also the first black and south asian female, sorry, Vice President as well. It really is a historic moment but President Trump is still in power this morning and he has issued a series of pardons, around 73 pardons. This is where convicted criminals and those facing trial are pardoned, and top of the list is a steve bannon, his former chief strategist, who was facing fraud charges linked to a Fundraising Campaign for Donald Trumps us mexico wall. It will open up trumps us mexico wall. It will open up donald trump to more criticism that he has been using his president ial power to help his friends. She has criticised what she calls the strong man who put their own personalities ahead of the problem is that they are meant to be solving together. And in terms of specific criticisms of the uk government, she says it was that threat to override part of the brexit deal in the heated negotiations last year, and also the decision to re prioritise spending away from foreign aid and to covid spending at home, which has affected the uks reputation globally. She has made criticisms before. Quite often she gets a little dig in at the government when she stands up in the government when she stands up in the house of commons. But packaging it all up in this way on this day is, in the words of one of her former close advisers, quite punchy. The government would like to focus on this new relationship they will forge with the new president when he takes over, they feel they have quite a lot in common when it comes to working together on the world stage, fighting Climate Change, cooperating on global security, and thatis cooperating on global security, and that is what the home secretary priti patel wanted to focus on when shes speaking to us earlier. There is a Winter Wonderland in some parts of scotland this morning and more to come tonight. The immediate concern is the amount of rainfall, there is a met Office Weather warning for parts, the river will continue to rise after the rain has stopped. The rain is heavy at times through the midlands, and even heavier in the south east. Northern ireland is brighter, south east of scotland seeing some rain and sleet and snow. Brighter weather in between the showers in the north of scotland, and colder conditions here, but further south it is milder, double fingers but stronger winds, touching gale force. The rain is on the move, it eases through those areas being badly effected through the last few days before turning to snow on the hills. It is tomorrow morning, blizzards could be a problem across some parts of eastern scotland, particularly the Higher Ground. More details in half an hour. The uk reached a new sombre record yesterday with the highest number of covid deaths in a 24 hour period since the pandemic began last year. The faculty of intensive Care Medicine say that many hospitals are now overwhelmed, with some staff almost on their knees, after many months of treating desperately ill patients. Clive myrie has spent ten days filming at the royal london hospital, speaking to staff, patients and family members about how they are coping with the pandemic. Lets take a look at a part of that special report and just to warn you some viewers may find the images in his report distressing. The birth of a new day brings a familiar demon. More Covid Infections. And more death. And its others who must stare into the abyss to spare our eyes. Like hannah, a senior mortician at the royal london hospital, part of a small team ofjust five that has handled hundreds of bodies in this pandemic. How do you ever prepare for people just dying and dying and dying, you know . Although it is ourjob and we deal with dead people every day, this level, i think, has taken its toll. Does it feel like a Conveyor Belt . It does, it does in a way and i hate to say that because i hate to think of it like that, but, yeah, it is almost, yet. Thats the pandemic has done, its no ones fault. Well. Sorry. Ive done this for years, you know. When somebody says to you, how does it make you feel, you say, how does it make you feel, yeah, this is how it makes me feel. The inner turbulence revealed. And yet, outer strength is what we crave, a brave face in those fighting the virus on our behalf. Every day the hospitals fill up, including the royal london. How many floors are taken up by Covid Patients here . Weve got patients on the third floor, fourth floor. This ward goes all the way round to the other side, its 29 patients. Sixth floor, seventh floor, eighth floor. Another covid patient in here. Ninth floor. Another one in here. Tenth, 11th. Again, round here in the other side, thats another 29 patients. 12th, 13th. This is our third ward, with 31 patients. And then obviously up here. Each four of these four bed bays contains Covid Patients. The 14th and the 15th floor, so thats 12 floors in total. 12 out of 15 floors, more than 400 patients. And there arent enough staff, its madness. And curiously, despite all the drugs and fancy equipment, the simple technique of periodically turning over Covid Patients or proning can help force oxygen into scarred lungs. But the manpower needed is immense, turning, and turning, and turning again. Day after day. Really gives you a sense of the impact of what is going on. Clive myrie joins us now. Thank you so much forjoining us. These reports are devastating to watch. So much to talk to you about but that personal impact it has on the people working there is something, isnt it . Incredible, hi there, something, isnt it . Incredible, hi there. Louise something, isnt it . Incredible, hi there, louise and something, isnt it . Incredible, hi there, louise and dan. Something, isnt it . Incredible, hi there, louise and dan. Hannah, l something, isnt it . Incredible, hi l there, louise and dan. Hannah, the mortician, or i should say a clinical pathology technologist, thatis clinical pathology technologist, that is the technical term for someone who works in that kind of area, she has been holding latin for the whole of the pandemic. I hope she is ok with me saying this, i did ask her. When we filmed her, she told me she has been holding that in. She doesnt talk about this to herfriends in. She doesnt talk about this to her friends because no in. She doesnt talk about this to herfriends because no one in. She doesnt talk about this to her friends because no one outside the circle wants to talk about death. These emotions and feelings are bottled up within that five women pretty much a strong team at the royal london hospital. And for an outsider to approach her and say, how do you feel about what you have had to see over the course of this pandemic . It was something that she was simply unprepared for. And what you saw there was months and months of pain, of hurt, orfrustration, just spill out. Because no one outside her circle ever asks her how she feels. And that is what myself, david the cameraman and sam the producer, wanted to get across in these films. The side of the pandemic that so many people might know about, in the back of the mind, but dont really think about or wants to think about. I got a tweet from the pathology technologist trade body or society that looks after people like anna. And they said, thank you so much for coming down to the basement of the hospital to talk to us and to talk to members of ourfraternity, as it to talk to us and to talk to members of our fraternity, as it were. Because no one ever does. And im thinking, hang on a second, we are in the middle of a Global Pandemic, its very definition is death. How come no one has spoken to you about this . But that is the reality. We try to push all this to one side and ifelt it was try to push all this to one side and i felt it was very important to bring this to the surface because that what was happening. Its bring this to the surface because that what was happening. That what was happening. Its so emotional hearing that what was happening. Its so emotional hearing what that what was happening. Its so emotional hearing what you that what was happening. Its so | emotional hearing what you have that what was happening. Its so i emotional hearing what you have to say, im going to come back to you in a second because we have a few issues with your sound, we can hear you but not brilliantly. I will come back to in a second i could. There was a heart rendering moment in yourfirst report when clive came across a particularly poignant story. I was, i was absolutely shocked. I have l hospitals in the front line . I was, i i was absolutely shocked. I have to say, part of the problem in getting the information out to the public and frankly to people like me is that it took a long time for nhs england to allowjournalists into hospitals. On many levels, i can understand why. But if there is an information vacuum, then that can cause problems. The consultant who we featured prominently in the films, she made it clear that she didnt believe the public in perhaps flouting social distancing rules and not Wearing Masks and not self isolating when they should, she didnt feel it was because the public didnt care about the nhs or they took it for granted, she felt it was because the public did not have enough information about how bad it is for those on the front line. And, yes, while i think our relationship with the royal london goes back several years and they trust us and they were very happy for us to come in, and to film, the vast majority ofjournalists trying to get into hospitals had a very difficult task doing so. And i think that has allowed a vacuum over several months where the nhs has been behind a curtain, as it were, toiling and struggling and dealing with all of this without the public really understanding just how awful it is. Just a simple fact of counting out the number of floors that you have Covid Patients on at the royal london, showing the process of pruning, it takes seven or eight or nine people to flip someone over to get more oxygen to their lungs, that is manpower. You have one intensive care nurse it dealing with three, possibly four patients. Borisjohnson had two intensive care nurses looking after him. So they could see the sense of the enormous numbers and strain and the enormous numbers and strain and the weariness and level of being fed up the weariness and level of being fed up that a lot of nurses and doctors have, dealing with this appalling crisis. , , have, dealing with this appalling crisis. ,. , crisis. There are samey things to think about crisis. There are samey things to think about. There crisis. There are samey things to think about. There crisis. There are samey things to think about. There so crisis. There are samey things to think about. There so many i crisis. There are samey things to i think about. There so many things think about. There so many things to think about. There is the impact right now, you talked about that, and also the long term impact on all those people. Its notjust the families, its all those people who have been working and trying desperately to save lives. Absolutely, as i was saying earlier, i think the sound was a bit iffy, the mortician is, people like hannah, the anatomical pathology technologists who deal with the dead bodies, journalists have not gone to talk to them. No one goes to talk to them. And yet they are at the very end of this pandemic nightmare, having to deal with the bodies. There are so many parts of the machinery a society that are dealing with this pandemic that we just dont know about, all that we are happy to turn our minds away from. Because it isnt palatable. Within the vast majority of hundreds and hundreds of messages that our team has received because of the work that weve done in the last few weeks at the royal london, saying that it has shone a light for them on what is going on and they are really happy that we did it, there are a few people, a lot of them are probably bots online, but if you people saying, why are you feeling a few people are saying, why do new film in which we . Because the definition of a pandemic is death. To ignore that why are you filming in a mortuary . To ignore that, ignoring the grave diggers, the people who drive the hearses, the people who drive the hearses, the mortician is, its in ignore the reality of the pandemic and 80,000 people dead. It means you dont learn the lessons for the future, you will not be willing to wear a mask or social distance, if you have to self isolate because your nhs tracking thing has pinged, you dont do it because you have to go out and earn a living. But we all need to think about the final effects of our actions in this pandemic or else it is going to take a hell of a lot longer to deal with it and we hope. Clive, thank you so much for talking to us and bringing out that message really clearly. His to us and bringing out that message really clearly really clearly. In scotlands hospitals there are almost 2,000 Covid Patients being treated, nearly a third more than there were in the first wave. James cook visited an intensive care unit in North Lanarkshire at the height of the pandemic last year. Hes since returned to see how staff and patients are coping. Mid morning. And intensive care seems calm. Dont be fooled, though. Monklands is in the grip of winter. The Fourth Season of this epic struggle. The first thing i noticed when i arrived here this morning is that its much busier than it was during the first wave in the spring. In fact, the rest of the hospital is full. And what that means is theres much more pressure on the staff here in intensive care. We are all having to do extra shifts, so that we can help each other out, so that each shift, there is enough staff nurses in here to look after the sick patients. And we are happy to do that, but we are all physically, mentally and emotionally drained now. We leave intensive care to meetjim, who works for a gas firm. He is not so old, 56, but he tells me he struggling. What do you want to say to people watching this . You dont want to be giving this to anybody you know. A kid, your mother. Just nobody. Jim has since been moved to intensive care. He is now on a ventilator. One more patient in a unit struggling to cope, short of beds, and short of staff. This winter, monklands has had to transfer a third of its sickest patients elsewhere. We have had to call on our sister hospitals, or sometimes even other health boards, to take that pressure off so that we can create capacity for the next person who requires it here. But there hasnt yet been a point where every hospital has been in that position at the same time . Not yet, but we are worried that the coming weeks, the projections look, scary, iguess, is the right word to use. But again, well get through that if we keep the hospital efficient. Part of the challenge for staff is dealing with more young, healthy patients. Patients like mae, who is only 26. Mae and her parents were vaccinated on Christmas Eve for theirjobs, but its likely they already had covid as they tested positive three days later. They are onlyjust home from hospital now. You must have been worried, sonia, about your daughter. Yeah, i was feeling really unwell as well, myself. How ill were you . I couldnt breathe. It was really bad because they moved so quickly to give me oxygen and they told me to lay on my stomach pretty much for three days. All i could think about was wanting to come home. But then at the same time, i knew that if i didnt have enough oxygen, even if i went home, i wouldnt have survived. There are some signs that this latest surge may be easing. But its not over. These are still dark and difficult days. James cook, bbc news, at monklands hospital in airdrie. Hopefully that gives you a picture of what life is like on the front line in various parts of the uk. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning from bbc london. Im alpa patel. 1,700 fixed penalty notices have been handed out to people not wearing face coverings on londons transport network. Transport for london has stepped up patrols and is expanding its team of enforcement officers. Its been mandatory to wear a facemask on london transport for seven months, but officers are still finding a minority breaking the rules. Ticket machines at more than 200 stations were made cashless during the summer. But the the decision was criticised by mps and Campaign Groups who said it would have left a large number of people reliant on newsganets to top up their oyester cards. An emergency call handler, paralysed from the waist down, is attempting to walk one mile to raise money for the London Ambulance service. Sean ash from bexley thought hed never walk again when he was diagnosed with a rare spinal condition last year. But hes now already completed half a mile, raising more than £6,000. He will walk the other half on friday. And good luck to sean. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. On the tube, minor delays on the hammersmith and city. On the trains still delays on south western services which are disrupted between woking and wimbledon due to track circuit failure. On the a4 the traffic lights are out at warwick road delays eastbound from hammersmith flyover. On the north circular, there are still westbound queues from Palmers Green into the roadworks after bounds green road. On the a2, delays westbound through the roadworks at the danson interchange. West green road is closed between green lanes and stanmore road due to an incident. Im back in an hour. Now its back to dan and louise. Bye for now. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. I thought we could have an hour off asjoe biden prepares to move into the oval office, borisjohnson has said he is looking forward to working closely with americas next president. Lets speak to shadow foreign secretary lisa nandy, whojoins lets speak to shadow foreign secretary lisa nandy, who joins us now. I optimistic this will be the start of new and better relationships with the us . I very much hope so. The last few years despite all the efforts of the uk government to get close to donald trump have produced nothing for britain. We havent been able to persuade him to rejoin the World Health Organization or the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, we havent got a trade deal, we havent gotjustice for havent got a trade deal, we havent got justice for harry havent got a trade deal, we havent gotjustice for harry dunn, and you can see from the actions ofjoe biden that despite his misgivings about borisjohnson on a personal level, he wants to have a close relationship with britain. He has obviously got very close ties to ireland where he has family, but he has a long, deep relationship with the United Kingdom as well, and made his first phone call to the uk Prime Minister. There is every reason to believe that if the uk government steps up now and ends a decade of retreat from the world and starts to rebuild our relationships across the world then we could be in a good position to build a strong, deep partnership with america that will help us get a grip of covid, restart the economy and produce newjobs in areas like Green Technology and start to really build britain. And start to really build britain. And what is the start to really build britain. And what is the priority in the relationship . Is it trade . The overriding relationship . Is it trade . Tue overriding priority for relationship . Is it trade . Tie overriding priority for any government at the moment has to be getting a grip on covid. We see huge numbers of deaths again in the uk. So how would the relationship with the us help with that . The so how would the relationship with the us help with that . The us help with that . The first thin i the us help with that . The first thing i expect you will see i the us help with that . The first thing i expect you will see joe | thing i expect you will seejoe biden do is rejoin the World Health Organization, and there are huge issues that need to be dealt with. First of all we have new strains of the virus emerging across the world, and many countries lack the global Surveillance System is to be able to track those, so we know for example that one emerged in britain, one emerged in south africa, but scientists expect that there are new strains emerging elsewhere that we dont know about because we dont have those global Surveillance Systems. We need to make sure we get the vaccine to every corner of the globe because if we dont defeat it everywhere it will come back to britain and we were defeated anywhere. Last year the government here tried to hold a global conference to raise money to make sure that that happened. They invited President Trump and he didnt even bother to attend. I think we could forge a deep relationship Withjoe Biden to start to get a grip on the health crisis, to get a grip on the health crisis, to help kick start the economy, but it will depend crucially on this government stepping up and starting to repair the damage that they have needlessly done over the last few years. They are our sister i party, we work closely with them and we have had conversations in the last few months. We face very similar domestic challenges, divided countries, years of division and populist leaders who have tried to stoke that division. We have the covid crisis we are all dealing with, into next year the uk is hosting a major Climate Change conference which we hope will start to set the world on a path to climate safety which is something thatis climate safety which is something that is of great significance to the United States as well, so we have been talking to them about that but we have also been talking to them about how we repair these relationships. There is a very strong feeling amongst some of the senior democrats, particularly those who served under president obama, the previous comments borisjohnson has made, the way he used the good friday agreement as a bargaining chip, have damage that relationship. But they want a relationship with britain, so the ball is now in our governments court, so we have to use this moment to raise the game and put us back on a global stage and put us back on a global stage and start to deliver for britain. Can i ask you specifically, this is related to china. The government narrowly saw off a rebellion by tory mps yesterday who want to outlaw trade deals with countries judged to be committing genocide. It comes amid condemnation of chinas treatment of the uighurs. How important is a relationship with china . ~. ,. , important is a relationship with china . ,. ,. , china . We trade with china, and nobody is suggesting we stop, i china . We trade with china, and i nobody is suggesting we stop, but what we shouldnt be doing is striking a trade deal that allows the uk market to be flooded with goods that are the product of genocide, people in forced labour, concentration camps, women subject to forced sterilisation is. We know these things are happening in china at the moment, and that is why people like iain duncan smith, the former conservative leader, stepped up former conservative leader, stepped up yesterday to vote with us to say, we just should not be trading on those terms with china or with anyone else for that matter. It is quite sad that the government didnt respond to that yesterday. It was genuinely cross party, and it was supported by organisations like the board of deputies who drew very, very striking parallels between what is happening to the uighurs and what happened during the holocaust. Nobody could fail to be moved by those parallels drawn byjewish organisations, and ijust very much hope the government will step up, come back to the house of commons next week and set out how it intends we are going to lead the world with the best of british traditions and trade in values in future. Lisa nand , trade in values in future. Lisa nandy. Thank trade in values in future. Lisa nandy, thank you trade in values in future. Lisa nandy, thank you very i trade in values in future. Lisa nandy, thank you. Unit elsewhere this morning. Storm christoph has made landfall in the uk, bringing with it extreme rainfall and more than 200 Flood Warnings and flood alerts. Thank you very much, you have given us a very clear picture of given us a very clear picture of what is going on in West Yorkshire this morning. Let see what is on the way. Heres matt with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. The peak will be about 6pm in yorkshire, but in some of the bigger rivers further downstream, we may not see peaks until we go towards the end of the weeks and the weekend even once the rain has stopped, and it is understandable when you have ground as wet as this, this was in norfolk taken just a short while ago. But there is still that met Office Amber Warning in place across parts of the midland, Northern England, too, further flooding likely, keep up to date with all the latest details on the website and on the app. The charts are not great to look at because the rain is still fairly persistent, we could see up to 18 hours of persistent rain across western parts, a wetter day towards the midlands, east anglia, the south east, they will be some dry spots here, very gusty winds, and the Northern Edge of our rain band, quite a bit fell through the night, lighter winds, some snow in the north, and particularly for Northern Ireland, some drier and brighter weather, lighter winds in the cooler conditions. The rain finally takes shift further east, strong, gusty winds, widespread gales across southern and eastern areas for a while, showers then follow in, icy conditions as temperatures drop, but as temperatures drop into tomorrow morning and much of thursday, they could turn to snow, eastern parts of scotland as much as a0 centimetres of fresh snow over the hills, that will be blown around by strengthening winds, so blizzards and drifting possible, and with heavy rain around the coast, we could see some flooding on lower levels of sites in the north east of scotland. Overall as we go into tomorrow, come a bit more on the way of sunshine, but it will take awhile for some of the to respond. Watch out, take care, thank you, matt. Sally is in the studio this morning, and you have had some fantastic guests lined up for us this morning. Yes, good morning, everybody. Judy murray has always been a proud promoter and advocate of women in sport so its perhaps appropriate that her new project involves interviewing some of the countrys most successful and prominent sportswomen, including dame kelly holmes. We see the performances, we see the gold medals in the titles and so forth, but we dont hear about who and what inspired and helped them along the way, so this really exposes all the highs, lows, the curve balls, and it also highlights many of the issues and challenges that still exist in womens sport, and we hope that by raising a lot of the talking points through the programme that we can create change, action, that will help the next generation of female sports stars. I think prior to covid, womens sport was at its best ever point in terms of momentum and visibility, and of course we have taken a giant step backwards because of covid, because pretty much nothing is going on, which is another reason why driving force is so important at the moment, it gets women sport on tv at a time when there isnt anything for us to watch, but we have still got a long way to go. Yes, we are in a better position, but we cant afford to take our foot off the gas, we have to keep making a noise about it because if we dont make a noise, nobody hears you, and thus is the power of this series, that ten britains most successful sportswomen talking about their journeys and how much they still all give back to their sport, particularly those who are not competing any more, and for me that is important, the numbers, and if we all stick together, we can hopefully create change for the future. Kelly, as an olympian. Create change for the future. Kelly, as an olympian, how create change for the future. Kelly, as an olympian, how challenging i create change for the future. You wake up every day, and even though moment. You wake up every day, and even though that Olympic Games isnt the here even though that Olympic Games isnt the here now, everything that you do is to prepare the here now, everything that you do is to prepare mentally as well as physically is to prepare mentally as well as physically for the biggest moment of your life. Physically for the biggest moment of your life, and there are some people whose your life, and there are some people whose careers ended last year by not going whose careers ended last year by not going to whose careers ended last year by not going to tokyo that will end this year if going to tokyo that will end this year if they do or dont get to tokyo. Year if they do or dont get to tokyo.
