That is why we have taken the decisions that we have on schools. It is to protect against the transmission in leicester where, as isaid, the transmission in leicester where, as i said, the number of cases is three times higher per head of population than the next closest city. And one in ten of all positive cases across the country in the last week have happened in leicester so we really do have a leicester specific outbreak and that is why i have taken the reaction that i have and i appreciate the impact of the action on people in leicester and i am grateful to them for their forbearance and their further sacrifice in heading this under control. These sorts of much more targeted measures have worked in other outbreaks so we had another outbreak was dealt with by shutting the factory, and our great in a hospital that was dealt with by shutting to new admissions. We have been taking this highly localised approach but unfortunately that targeted action was not working in leicester and that is why we have taken this much broader measure. So we have been on it and we have been talking all the way through to explain the actions. Bearing in mind the cultural and housing issues, what are you doing to try and prevent lockdowns elsewhere in some of those other areas as we have seen elsewhere in some of those other areas as we have seen in leicester . We are still doing the work to understand exactly why the outbreak has been so bad in leicester but lots of the reasons that you mention just then a familiar to me and people will find them intuitive. Of course we are looking at similar places but thus far the data shows that the problem in leicester is about three times bigger than the next worst hit place. So it needs very significant work. Having said that, i think the action we took demonstrates that we are prepared to make difficult decisions that i know will be really difficult for people in leicester because it is the right thing for leicester on the right thing for leicester on the right thing for leicester on the right thing for the rest of the country to have this more localised approach to the measures to tackle the virus. It moves around, partly depending on the day of the week. That is the number of test to what about the number of people being tested. There is a crucial distance. Weve been trying to get to the bottom of this for a few weeks and whenever we asked you a question, 39 weeks, 39 days was last time we got those official diggers. So it is about the number of people being tested. It is quite confusing to talk about the number of test rather than the number of people. The challenge with the measure of the number of people tested is that the way that it was measured, if you had been tested at the start of the crisis then you would not count as somebody being tested for the first time and at the start of the crisis that was a useful measure. But now it is much less so because if somebody was attested in april and have retested now, it makes no difference if they were tested and not ina difference if they were tested and not in a full if they tested negative. So that measure is harder to measure meaningfully stop what really matters is that if people need a test then they can get access toa need a test then they can get access to a test and everybody who has symptoms should come forward for a test. Right across the whole country. The other thing we are doing is making the result, the positive test result, where those are, we are making that Data Available to local Public Health officials and we are going to publish it, as local as possible. So people can see where these test results are and people can look in their area and also researchers can look and try to spot patterns in the data. To return to the original point about transparency. I think it is five weeks, 39 days since we got official figures is five weeks, 39 days since we got officialfigures and is five weeks, 39 days since we got official figures and judging by what you have just said official figures and judging by what you havejust said doesnt official figures and judging by what you have just said doesnt mean you are not going be publishing that figure . We are publishing a huge amount of data but what i am saying is that as it was measured, the specific figure you ask for, itjust does not add anything to the battle against coronavirus and it does not help people to know what to do at a local level because of the fact that we are now several months into this fight. So i am happy, we work with uk start to try and find a way to publish it in a way that is meaningful. But the meaningful figure is how many test are being conducted, where they are being conducted, where they are being conducted and where positive test results are. That is what is important for tackling this virus and that data will be made public. One last question, you say you work with the Statistics Authority and they said the chairman said that it appeared you are aiming at showing the largest possible number of test even at the expense of understanding. One person can be tested a number of times and you are happy to use those figures a few weeks ago but not now. The u referred to was sent sometime ago and we have been constantly improving the way that we measure the data that we have it is incredibly important for understanding the transmission of this virus. Trying to tackle it, trying to get on top of it to get the best possible data. Standing up the best possible data. Standing up the whole testing capability was a enormous National Effort that went ahead at such pace because we did not go into this crisis with a large capability. We built that testing capability, bigger than any other country in europe, and of course it has been a constant effort to improve it all the way along. And you can see some of the results of that because we can now see, for instance, which cities have a higher number of positive test compared to their level of population. And that allows us to have a much more localised approach to tackle i sing this virus tackling this virus. So that allows us to free up people and ta ke that allows us to free up people and take legal action. It is at the root of what we need to do is a country to move forward. His little boy will be mixed race, and peaty says he wants him to be known for his achievements, not the colour of his skin. He is also determined to make changes to the culture of sport he loves swimming. Swimming, itsa swimming, its a very white based sport, because i think culturally we dont really reach out to those communities to get them involved in sport and get them involved in swimming lessons and really feel make them feel included, in a sense. And it is one of those sports that has struggled with that ever since it has kind of been a thing in olympics. We we re inviting me on your programme. We were absolutely delighted when the Prime Minister announced that weddings can be reinstated in covid secure conditions from the fourth of july. The guidelines were released and they have been compulsory reading for us overnight to ensure that the wedding of liam ann taylor, i think we probably got a photograph of those guys, will be fully compliant. It means, in a nutshell, that we have to make sure the place is clean, hygiene arrangements are in place, social distancing be observed. The wedding ceremony will be short but sweet, but no singing, and we will have to retain the records of those guests who attend for 21 days for test and track purposes. So the wedding itself will bea purposes. So the wedding itself will be a slimmed down version of what they were originally hoping for. The original date of their wedding was the second of may, that was planned over a year ago, and obviously that has had to be moved down. But they are very has had to be moved down. But they are very keen, as committed christians, to do the right thing before god, and also meet all the compliance requirements of the government. So that is basically how the day will pan out on saturday the fourth. Ok, that is how it is going to work. Lets speak to harriet. Your big day was meant to be 13 june. Know, so we held out until the bitter end for 13 june, waiting for government guidance which was published on first ofjune to say that weddings could go ahead. So now we have got this new kind of guidance that has come out that we can get married on the fourth. We reallyjust need to think about what that they might be like. Idid think about what that they might be like. I did originally for the 13th, because of the pandemic, plan a socially distant marriage in the church that i was baptised and, with our witnesses in the side chapels. So we are kind of ready to go in that sense. But it is just. I think the guidance has made it seem quite clinical and rushed, and really it is a special and intimate ceremony, and i just feel really it is a special and intimate ceremony, and ijust feel i am not really sure when is the right time. And it is difficult as well because we dont know how open ended this guidance is. So if they turn around and say august will be slightly different, my dad could walk down the aisle, should i wait until then or should i do it right now . It is really ha rd to or should i do it right now . It is really hard to know. Harriet, these are things you have been planning for so long, and so kind of personally important, and they . For example, your dad walking you down the aisle. I mean, it has got to be pretty devastating for you. Yes, it has been, and i think the thing is it has been quite a long process getting my head around it, so obviously lockdown started in march, and my wedding still seemed a long time away, and lewis and i were still planning for the june time away, and lewis and i were still planning for thejune date, and it was really only quite recently that we let it go. But we are both, you know, really came to be married, and we know that that is the most important part. But i knew the most important part. But i knew the song i wanted as i walked down the song i wanted as i walked down the aisle, and itjust feels quite sad that it wont be kind of what we imagine. Another couple were going to get married in august but they pushed it back to april. So they will have a double whammy, if you like. They will have a formal ceremony on saturday, but then a major celebration downstream, when we can all get back together again. Its the right thing for leicester but also the right thing for the rest of the country to have this more localised approach to the measures to tackle the virus. Tighter coronavirus restrictions are being imposed in leicester this morning as it becomes the first city in the uk to be put under local lockdown. Non essential shops wont be allowed to open today and schools will be closed to most pupils from thursday. Speaking on this programme a short while ago, the Health Secretary matt hancock defended himself against criticism from labour that they didnt crack down quickly enough. First mentioned the worry is we i first mentioned the worry is that we had about the outbreak in leicester 11 days ago, and thats right, and we have been monitoring it extremely closely. We have put in extra testing units. Some of the schools in leicester were closed already. We also went into some of the factories and workplaces where there was an outbreak, and we put in place measures. These sorts of much more targeted measures have worked in other outbreaks, so we have had an outbreak in other areas which we have dealt with by shutting factories, and another outbreak in Weston Super Mare where we shut hospitals, and gp surgeries in enfield. We have been taken is highly localised approach but u nfortu nately highly localised approach but unfortunately that targeted action wasnt working in leicester and thats why weve taken the much broader measures, so we have been on it and broader measures, so we have been on itandi broader measures, so we have been on it and i have been talking all the way through explaining the actions we have been taking. Matt hancock was also talking about changing the law about nonessential shops and potentially looking at changing the law about going in and out of leicester if people dont follow the recommendations. There has been quite mixed reaction, but i have to say a number of people that i have spoken to who have been walking to the city centre have said that they feel that these restrictions should have come in sooner. We have also heard from people who are anxious about what this means notjust for their health, but also in terms of the impact on the local economy. It has been bustling, leicester, overthe last two weeks, it will be much quieter as those nonessential shops will not reopen today. And matt hancock has also advised people to stay at home if they can, and also to try not to take any travel unless it is essential in and out and around the city. Its notjust leicester thats affected, some of the surrounding areas as well, and thats something we are still waiting information on. There is a real sense of frustration in the sense that people feel like that they were moving forward, and this isa they were moving forward, and this is a step back. Its expected that these measures will last for at least two weeks, and will be co nsta ntly least two weeks, and will be constantly monitored by the government. The Prime Minister Boris Johnson is promising to spend £5 billion on Infrastructure Projects in britain as he pledges to build back better after the coronavirus outbreak. Hes expected to announce schemes to improve Hospital Maintenance, build new schools in england and maintain prisons. Were joined by our Political Correspondent iain watson. It sounds like an ambitious plan, so where will this money be spent . M will be spent in various parts of the country, bits of the country which borisjohnson describes as a neglected and unloved, so i think an attempt perhaps to shore up the support of people who voted conservative the first time in the last election. There was a package for hospitals, a package for schools yesterday was £1 billion, there will be 101 towns targeted for regeneration, and something in the region of 75,000 trees being planted to give the package a bit of a green tinge. Its only a small part of Infrastructure Spending which was already announced by the chancellor in the budget sometime ago and Boris Johnson is comparing himself to Franklin D Roosevelt, the american president led america out of the Great Depression with his new deal. To give you some idea of the scale of that, there were 35,000 big projects under the new deal in america, we are talking here for 29 road projects, 50 schools in the first tranche. So its not quite the same scale. The message is he wants to try and get britain out of the Coronavirus Crisis by building the economy back to health. A warning from the labour party that there should be a laser like focus on jobs, and its not necessarily easy to turn somebody who works in the hospitality sector into someone who is suddenly building a new railway or road. An independent review has said that a serial rapist was free to attack his victims when he was mistakenly released from prison due to whats being called major failings by inexperienced probation staff. Joseph mccann was given 33 life sentences and jailed for a minimum term of 30 years for a string of attacks and kidnappings last year. Our Home Affairs Correspondent, june kelly, reports. The end of a manhunt Joseph Mccann was finally cornered, hiding up a tree in cheshire. Wanted for multiple rapes and kidnappings in the north and south of england. He had been wrongly released from prison when he committed these crimes. This latest review sheds more light on the failings in this catastrophic case. It found three different probation officers have been responsible for mccann in the run up to his ill fated release last year. Its also discovered prison staff didnt share Key Information with probation colleagues. Earlier this year, one of mccanns victims, who was 71 when she was raped by him, spoke to the bbc. She now says she finds this new review very distressing. In a statement, she says Joseph Mccann, described by the trialjudge as classic psychopath, was given 33 life sentences for the attacks on the women and children he terrorised. The ministry ofjustice said it had apologised to the victims for what it describes as the unacceptable failings in this case. It said it had improved information sharing and training. June kelly, bbc news. The government has been warned that it could take ten years to clear the backlog of court cases thats built up in england and wales. Thats according to a report from the crown prosecution service. Their chief inspector Kevin Mcginty says a lack of investment in the system has been magnified during the pandemic. He suggests libraries and leisure centres may need to be used. The ministry ofjustice said measures were being drawn up to ensure justice was delivered. A new strain of flu that has the potential to become a pandemic has been identified in china by scientists. It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but researchers say it can infect humans. There are concerns that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person. While it is not an immediate problem, they say, it has the hallmarks of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring. Canadian Entertainment Firm Cirque Du Soleil is to cut 3,500 jobs after striking a deal to avoid bankruptcy. The group, best known for its flamboyant touring circuses, said the coronavirus pandemic had forced it to cancel shows and lay off its artists. The company will now try to restructure while shedding about 95 of its staff. People should avoid all but essential travel to, from, and within leicester and should stay at home as much as possible. Its the emotional impact, the staff are excited to come back, but also anxious and nervous and then they are told they cant come backin then they are told they cant come back in again. The other thing is, lots of my colleagues arent in the leicester area and they are starting onjuly four, arent in the leicester area and they are starting on july four, its heartbreaking to know that they are going to start working and we cannot. I suppose its the same for both of you, if they cannot come to your salon, theyre perfectly within their rights to go elsewhere. Absolutely. Thats going to be another big thing, when we are allowed to open again, what is leicester going to do for us to help encourage clients to come back into the city centre . How will they allow people to come back into the city . Safety and health is the priority here, we have heard from Health Secretary this morning, people are being urged not to travel in and out and around the city, that is just guidance, is that how you would like to see it stay . think that is being realistic. I just want to begin by saying how much i share the frustration of amanda and billy. The secretary of state announced that he believed there was an outbreak in leicester the better part of two weeks ago and since then we have been struggling to get information from them as to what data they had, what led them to believe there was this particular problem here, and struggling to get them to keep the level of testing in leicester. It came in a sense something of a relief yesterday to actually have some certainty about the way forward and have some certainty that what they are going to do is extensive and hopefully going to be effective. The other thing which isnt certain, we know the first instance is two weeks, do you have any indication of how any decision to increase it or stay with it, how that decision will be made . I hope that the decision will be made on the basis of data, on the basis of figures, and i hope that in future there will be figures that will be shared with us. For weeks we have been trying to get information about the level of testing in the city and the results of that citys testing, and it was only last thursday that we got the first batch of that data. And i hope that no that now they have recognised a need to work with us, they will provide us with the information we need. Would you have preferred lockdown to have happened earlier there . If, as seems to be the case, there . If, as seems to be the case, the figures suggest that there are issues in the city, i would wish that they had shared that with us right from the start. I wish that they had ta ken right from the start. I wish that they had taken a more speedy decision rather than leave it 11 days, i think it was, from the secretary of states first announcement through to actually announcing that there was going to be action. That is a long gap, and a long time for the virus to spread. Lets talk about what a man and billy were talking about, really concerns about about what amanda and billy were talking about, about the concerns on their businesses, will they get help . We have been making this case very strongly to the government, if leicester is going to be treated differently in terms of the lockdown, we also need to be treated differently in terms of the support for businesses. Our economy is obviously, like the economy is obviously, like the economy of the rest of england, suffered quite a setback as the result of the lockdown and if we are going to stay in lockdown longer we will need extra help to make sure leicester comes out stronger. Matt hancock saying on travel, we are recommending people not to travel m, recommending people not to travel in, outand recommending people not to travel in, out and around the city, we are not putting it in place as law, but do you think people will listen to what has been said and adhere to it . I very much hope they will. I can see the governments difficulty on this because it would be very difficult to draw a clear boundary around a city like leicester where the administrative boundary is pretty much invisible. Its very difficult to say that, well, we will put roadblocks up as soon as you get to the fields, itjust put roadblocks up as soon as you get to the fields, it just wouldnt work. But i hope people will understand that these are pretty tough restrictions for the city, but i think the better for that. Because they are more likely to be effective than merely extending the present situation, more likely to be effective and therefore more likely for us to come out of the other end more quickly. He also went on to say, the Health Secretary, i will make further changes if i need to. Would you back those . It would depend on what they were. I very much hope that having taken a very tough decision right from the start, that anything from here on will be a relaxation rather than a strengthening of the position. It is a stronger position that they have taken than any of us anticipated and i think very much welcomed for that, because it is that much more likely to be effective and if its effective, we can hope to move on from here as a city earlier than might otherwise have been the case. This is all about peoples health. From a health point of view, is a letter in the best place to cope with this . Is leicester in the best place to cope with this . We are a city with a wide range of different communities and a wide range of health issues. There is undoubtedly a significant distinction between those who are comparatively affluent and had comparatively affluent and had comparatively good health and those who suffer disadvantage. That is no different from any other similar city anywhere in the uk or anywhere in the world, come to that. And certainly it is important that at a local level, we recognise the disparities in the city and the different communities in the city, and to seek to help and support them in ways that they understand and that are appropriate. As mayor of leicester, this is a concern in time for anybody living there at the moment, what is your message to them . The message is that we actually do need to take very seriously these restrictions. We need to abide by them, we need to recognise that by abiding by them, we will come out of the end of this much more quickly than would otherwise be the case. So i would say to them and i will myself be making sure we will abide by the rules and do the very best to defeat the virus in the city. Thank you very much for your time. Even those latest figures, what the Health Secretary said about the City Accounting for 10 of the positive country figure to make, do you think the decision to make, do you think the decision to put the lockdown on leicester is right . Yes, i do. If you look at the figures, they have been going up slowly over the last few weeks with no sense that they are coming down to something needed to happen to halt this. Otherwise the situation is going to get much worse and at the end of the day, we have people who are going to be affected by this in terms of the health and well being. Something needed to happen and this is the right decision. There are all sorts of and discussions about this, there are cultural issues, housing issues, poverty issues, the local mp saying these are all things coming together. Do you think we will see more of these local spikes in the weeks ahead . We have got to be prepared for that. You just have to look around at other countries in the world, the us, germany, india, places like that where they have seen places like that where they have seen local spikes and they have had to go in and do local lockdown is an restrictions. I think we should anticipate that this is what we can expect for the future. And when you are, whena expect for the future. And when you are, when a government is imposing these measures and again, the Health Secretary was talking about changing the law about nonessential shops and looking at potentially changing the law about travel in and out of leicester if people cannot follow the recommendations, surely there is an awareness that people will leave to eat, to go and meet people, to work, to see members of their family. I suppose you are relying on them listening to that advice and following it to try and control the infection rate. Most definitely. You hope that the majority will adhere to the guidance. Inevitably, it is really difficult, isnt it . We have just lifted the restrictions, people we re just lifted the restrictions, people were just just lifted the restrictions, people werejust beginning to just lifted the restrictions, people were just beginning to enjoy a bit more freedom and having to impose them again. But unless people do adhere to the restrictions, then just as the mayor has said, the risk we run is that this outbreak, this epidemic gets bigger and therefore is much harder to control. Do you think this is something well going to have to get used to in the coming months . We have already had from heard from professor chris whitty at the last briefing saying that we are going to be in a situation until spring next year. I think hes right, this is something we will be facing going forward. Whether it is big in areas such as the city, or individual schools or care homes or whatever, the idea of local restrictions and lockdown is is something that we are going to have to live with going forward. We talked to the Health Secretary about the importance of testing, talking about those daily figures, he said they werent as important as they were a few weeks ago. But testing is crucial and thats one of the reasons we know there was this a spike in leicester. Yes, itjust shows that the system is working. It might not have been as quick as we would have liked that the system is working because its picked up the fact that they wear these extra cases that were happening. So testing and testing and tracing, to try and really manage and control the spread of the virus, is absolutely essential going forward. You feel, im sure, for residents in leicester and the Business Owners we spoke to before the mayor on the programme talking about the preparation they made, the taking of staff of furlough, buying stock to make sure its really ready to go. I know this can change depending on whether people follow the recommendations, but could two weeks be enough or could that be extended . Thats why the government is being cautious, saying that they will review in two weeks. Lets be quite serious, it is very devastating for local businesses and they have my real sympathy. Because they were just gearing up, eitherjust opened or gearing up to open, and this is really ha rd or gearing up to open, and this is really hard for them. But if we dont get on top of it, it could actually be even worse. We can tell from the dog collar, you are a vicar now, is a newjob more or less stressful . Tighter coronavirus restrictions are being imposed in leicester this morning as it becomes the first city in the uk to be put under local lockdown. Non essential shops wont be allowed to open today and schools will be closed to most pupils from thursday. Speaking on this programme a short while ago, the Health Secretary matt hancock defended himself against criticism from labour that they didnt lockdown quickly enough. I first mentioned the worries that we had about the outbreak in leicester 11 days ago. Thats right. And we have been monitoring it incredibly closely. We have put in extra testing units. Some of these schools in leicester were closed already. We also went into some of the factories and workplaces where there was an outbreak and put in place measures. These sorts of much more targeted measures have worked in other outbreaks. We had an outbreak in keighley that we dealt with by shutting a factory there. We have had an outbreak in Weston Super Mare that we dealt with by shutting the hospital there to new admissions. We have shut gp surgeries in enfield. So we have been taking this highly localised approach. But unfortunately, that targeted action wasnt working in leicester. Thats why we have taken this much broader measure. We have been on it and i have been talking to Jonathan Ashworth all the way through, explaining the actions that weve been taking. That was the Health Secretary. The citys mayor says there has been a lack of clarity, and the government hasnt acted quickly enough. If, as seems to be the case, and the figures suggest that there are issues in the city, i wish that they had shared that with us right from the start and i wish that they had taken a more speedy decision rather than leave it, what, 11 days, i think it was, from the secretary of states first announcement through to actually announcing that there was going to be action. Thats a long gap and a long time for the virus to spread. Today marks 100 days since lockdown began, and whether it has been home schooling, caring for family members or shielding on your own, the time has brought some severe challenges for many of us. But there have also been some high points and things that have brought us closer. Brea kfasts Jayne Mccubbin has been finding out what lockdown has meant for you. If there wasnt lockdown i would have been at work 12 hours a day, four days a week or whatever, but instead ive got to spend all my time bonding with her. They are best friends. That is so nice there are the photos of home schooling, home entertainment, new skills, new friends and this a photo in liverpool of an alleyway which brought a community together. There was a chat myself and my neighbour mel had originally on my birthday over the wall and we thought we both have small yards and look at the wasted space out the back, wouldnt it be great if we could do something exciting out there . This space was transformed by neighbours who were once strangers but are now firm friends. Before lockdown, we knew our immediate neighbours, so two. Come and meet everybody this is amy. Hi now we know 14 people and all feel like close friends. Hello feels like were part of a community, we are a part of what didnt realise we were. Everything has changed i kind of feel like i have a lockdown family. There are pictures of pets waiting for a loved one to return, pets with a loved one who now never leaves, but this crisis took a heavy toll and there were pictures from the brink of death. Oh, my goodness this was the first imagejohn sent his wife after two months in hospital to say he was finally in recovery. How poorly were you, john . Very poorly. I was in an induced coma and on a ventilator for about four and a half weeks. How does it feel to have him back . It is wonderful having him back i wont let him go again there are pictures of grief, pictures of loss and, for some, a picture in their minds eye they wish they could have taken but didnt realise what little time was left. The whole family together, that wouldve been amazing. Didnt get round to it, didnt get round to it. You never know whats round the corner, though, do you . This is it like i said, everything happened so fast and so quick. Did not expect it to be dad one single bit at all. God wants the good ones, is what i say to myself now. Hes definitely got one of the good ones up there now, 100 . 110 actually im sending you a big virtual hug. Many people throughout the lockdown have been making some real sacrifices particularly families who have been kept apart. Nursing assistant sinead didnt want to put her four year old son at risk so spent 13 weeks living away from him as he stayed with his grandparents. 13 weeks lets have a little look. This was the moment the family were reunited after so long apart. There is blake knocking on the door and he hasnt seen his mum and dad four weeks. It gets me every time when i see that hug. You can imagine the emotion. There is blake fiddling with in the background. And mum sinead and dad tom. Blake looks to be enjoying himself as a normal four year old wood behind you. We have seen that moment that dragged on the heartstrings for everyone this morning. Sinead, what was it like to welcome your son back after 14 weeks . Such a long time away. The best feeling in the world being able to hug him and hold him and squeeze him as long and tight as i wanted to. It was amazing. Sinead, lets go back to the original decision, because its a hard thing to think the safest place for my son is not with me, so how did you come to that decision . What was that, sorry . Im just asking about how you came to the decision blake wouldnt be with you because thats where he wouldnt be safest . I always knew it was a decision that i was going to come to, it was just decision that i was going to come to, it wasjust in my head decision that i was going to come to, it was just in my head trying to get around it, to, it was just in my head trying to getaround it, i to, it was just in my head trying to get around it, i knew it would be the safest thing to be with my pa rents for the safest thing to be with my parents for him rather than putting it down like him at risk coming backwards and forwards when im on my days off, it wasnt safe for him. Yeah, we hoped on the top of our heads, one month tops hopefully, but 13 weeks was hard. But now we have got him back, so were good and glad. He is so sweet, dont worry. I know you were talking to him during those long weeks. You went to see him. How was that for you . It was hard, especially the first time we went to see him. It was easter so i brought him toys and easter eggs and stuff for him to open because obviously he wasnt here and he wanted to run out and hug us and we said he couldnt and he got really upset. My mum and dad got upset and i was trying to get upsetin got upset and i was trying to get upset in front of him, so we knew we wouldnt go loads of times because i didnt want it to affect him too much and not be able to touch him, so much and not be able to touch him, so it was just as hard much and not be able to touch him, so it wasjust as hard not much and not be able to touch him, so it was just as hard not being able to see him as much. What is it like being back together as a family and doing normal family like being back together as a family and doing normalfamily things . Yeah, trying to get back to normality now, trying to get a routine going, we are going to try and do lots more stuff together now we are all back together, i think. They are still due to play because we havent heard what will happen from that game but we have heard from both managers, brendan rodgers, the leicester boss, said there must be agile in their reactions to this situation, a little more from roy hodgson, the Crystal Palace boss, who said im happy for the premier league to take care of all of this. Im certain they will tell us when and where this game will be played. So with the lockdown in leicester you have to look ahead and think perhaps this is a game that could go toa perhaps this is a game that could go to a neutral venue, perhaps they will change the date or delay it, but i think a neutral venue is one of the options the premier league will be looking at very seriously at the moment. You mentioned adam peaty, a man with nine World Records and a whole host of titles and of course his olympic gold medal. It is fair to say that adam is used to being kept busy. So, with a baby on the way and this years olympics postponed by the pandemic, how has he been handling the lockdown . Ive been to find out. Well, ive been to his garden to find out. Presented you with some real challenges in terms of training. But you are managing to get around them, arent you . Tell me what this is. This is a five by three metre tub, it is called an endless pool, you basically swim against it, it enables me to train pretty much 90 of my normal volume, my normal speed, my normal stroke. Of my normal volume, my normal speed, my normalstroke. Being outside the water you would have to swim ina outside the water you would have to swim in a river or a outside the water you would have to swim in a river ora lake outside the water you would have to swim in a river or a lake which is not ideal and for me my stroke is so precise and this enables me to do that. Swimming is a sport is very ha rd to that. Swimming is a sport is very hard to train for if you have no access to the water. With the elite athletes who are out of the water for seven weeks, may be eight weeks, which is a long time, and we got these in and we are back into the elite Training Centre now. It has been an amazing tool and an amazing utility to use. It wasnt easy, was it, getting the pull into the garden. Tell me how that worked. So basically they came down the drive, put all these grids out to make sure it didnt fall down a drain or Something Like that, put it straight over the house, swung it around and planted it down. They have done an excellent job, it was planted it down. They have done an excellentjob, it was very much needed, at a crucial time really. Because you could see things, especially sport with the premier league, starting to get back to it andi league, starting to get back to it and i thought i need to get back to it now and start to put those things in place. I know the olympics are a year away but a year isnt that much time. How will it work for you, then . Do you think, it gives me another year to work . Yeah, i honestly think it has all happened for me, i dont know, everything is just starting together so it has all happened as a challenge. Going to the olympics this year, yes, i may have got a world record and may have done this time and may have won but you never say yes because it never happened. So going into this next year, im going to have a little boy in september so thats going to be a challenge, sleepless nights, short nights of sleep and kind of a challenge because im going to be away for a long time, during a long time at training camps, so you have that aspect of things. But i think once i stand on those blocks at the olympics, i always do this on my chest, im doing it for them, all this kind of sacrificing all this effort we put in as a family and as a support team. British swimming has put in at my sponsors. All this effort in there is going to pay off in that moment and i think its going to be an amazing moment where we have learned so much more having this time off and having this delay. It is great to hear you sounding so positive im so excited and to see you in such a happy place because not that long ago, i know things, you have been through tough times, havent you . There have been tough times, 2018, towards the end of 2018 and all the way through 2019 there we re and all the way through 2019 there were times when i wasnt myself, i wasnt positive really, i was in a state of mind where i was just getting by in a sense in my head. You can have the fast cars, you can have the sponsors and the money and everything that comes with sport, but with the athlete, the mind is the athlete and the body is simply the athlete and the body is simply the means. If you dont look after this your performance is going to go down. And obviously your Mental Health is going to go down. One of the downsides of lockdown as people who would regularly want to go to their local Swimming Pool for their exercise are not able to do that. And we know there is a petition going on right now is part of a campaign to get the Swimming Pool is open again. How important is it . How safe do you think it would be for pools to open to the public . safe do you think it would be for pools to open to the public . I think it would be quite easy for them to open the pools, limit the amount of people in the pool, make sure you get temperature checks and face max on entry and exit. Face masks. Where there is a will theres a way of the government need to put that will together and think how can we get the pools open . If they are opening the pubs and people are drinking the government need to bring a balance and bring it back to open leisure, open the gyms. If you have too much of that and you havent got too much of this you are not going to meet in the middle, you will just have people not going to meet in the middle, you willjust have people going down the pub every week or every day whereas normally they would go to the gym or a leisure centre. You are a dad of a little boy, a mixed race boy. How important is it even in your business in swimming but there is a more diverse picture coming through, because we dont really see that, do we . I completely agree. In the swimming it is a very white based sport because i think culturally we dont really reach out to those communities to get them involved in sport. To get them involved in swimming lessons and make them feel included in a sense. It is one of those sports which has struggled for that ever since it has been a thing in the olympics. Obviously with my little boy he will be mixed race, quarter nigerian because my girlfriend is half nigerian. I want to give him the opportunity that any sport he goes in he is not going to have that kind of tag that you are going to be this mixed race runner ora going to be this mixed race runner or a mixed race whatever, or footballer, he should be known for his name and for his achievements. Really great to talk to adam peaty who was so honest about how his life has changed. This time last year he hadnt even met his girlfriend and in september he will be a dad to a baby boy and then have the olympics to look forward to next summer. A busy, busy time for him it wasnt that pull fantastic . Ican that pull fantastic . I can see a theme developing of background interviews with sally, Marcus Rashford, adam peaty. In recent weeks, weve been following the incredible story of five year old tony hudgell. He had his legs amputated as a baby, but during lockdown he set out to walk 10km in one month to raise money for the hospital that saved his life. Later today hell take the final steps of his challenge and hes not only beaten his target distance, hes also raised more than £1 million in donations. Lets remind ourselves of his journey. He is a very strong, determined little boy. He knows what he wants and if he wants something hell go out and set about in his way of getting it. He saw captain tom walking in the garden with his frame and tony had a frame like that to start off with and he said, i could do that. And then we decided to sort of set this challenge and raise some money for the evelina which saved his life. Some money for the evelina that saved his life. You are a superstar. You are a hero.
