Liverpools hopes of celebrating their first ever premier league title are on hold as theyre held to a goalless draw at everton, with manager jurgen klopp admitting they came close to losing the merseyside derby. Today were looking today we are looking at cloud and rain and in the east brighter and warmer but temperatures rising this week as is the humidity. By the end of the week, some of us could see 23 celsius. Its mondayjune the 22nd. Our top story a minutes silence will be held in reading this morning to remember the three People Killed in a stabbing in a park on saturday evening, which police are treating as a terror incident. The first victim has been named as 36 year old history teacher james furlong. One person remains in hospital, but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening. John mcmanus reports. 36 year old james furlong, one of the three people who died in saturday evenings horrifying terror attack in the centre of reading, and the only one named so far. His parents, gary and janet, described him as a wonderful man who would live in their hearts forever. James was a teacher at the holt school in wokingham, where he was head of history. On sunday, the school released a statement, calling him former students have also paid tribute, including molly collins. He was like one of the best teachers theyve had, so passionate, enthusiastic, positive all the time. Made the extra mile for everyone. Always wanted people to be happy and included. And i dont think he knew how much of an impact he had on everyones life. Its so, so sad. James furlong had been enjoying a summer evening here at forbury gardens when the stabbing attack began. Police are continuing to question 25 year old Khairi Saadallah, a libyan man who lived locally. Detained at the scene, he was rearrested under section 41 of the terrorism act 2000. Mr saadallah was known to mi5, but they decided he was not a genuine risk or immediate threat. Im appalled and sickened that people should lose their lives in this way. If there are lessons that we need to learn about how we handle such cases, how we handle the events leading up to such cases, then we will learn those lessons. Laurence wort was also in forbury gardens on saturday evening and saw a group of men come under attack first. I never expected anything like that to to see anything like that. Its awful. I saw people die in front of me. Its crazy. I still cant really comprehend it. Its still a bit shocking. Reading has been left shock by the weekends events. My heart goes out to everybody affected by it. Its tragic, absolutely. Its something were not going to forget for a long time here now. People will be a bit tense and i think more watchful about their surroundings, i guess. Really shocked, a bit scared, just because it is very weird to see where you live on the news. This morning at 10am, the town will pause to remember those who didnt make it through the weekend. John mcmanus, bbc news. John mcmanus is live in reading now. Such a difficult day for everyone who lives there. Morning. Morning, louise. Yes, ithink who lives there. Morning. Morning, louise. Yes, i think that minutes silence at 10am this morning will be very widely observed here in reading and not just because very widely observed here in reading and notjust because of the a p pa re ntly and notjust because of the apparently random attack on saturday but with groups of friends gathered in the park behind me, enjoying the sunshine on the longest day of the year, suddenly caught up in a terrifying and from the sounds of things, extremely violent terror attack. The Investigation Continues andi attack. The Investigation Continues and i think there will be a lot of focus now on what mi5 may have known about the suspect Khairi Saadallah. Sources are saying they didnt consider him to be a genuine risk. Police state say they are still looking for a motive for the attack but they do consider this to be a terrorist incident. And briefly, on the subject of the police, now we know more about the sequence of the events, it is clear they responded very quickly when they first got the emergency call at about five to seven, that something was going wrong in the gardens behind me. Well, really difficult start of the week for everybody in reading here and of not least for those families whose loved ones started what seemed to bea whose loved ones started what seemed to be a very normal weekend but they never made it through to monday. Thank you very much, john, and i know you were there throughout the morning for us, thank you. A further easing of the coronavirus lockdown in england will be discussed later, when the Prime Minister meets senior cabinet ministers and scientific advisers. It comes ahead of a major announcement tomorrow on the possible relaxation of the two metre rule, plus plans for reopening pubs, restaurants and hairdressers. Lets get more on this now from our political correspondent, jonathan blake, who joins us from westminster. Jonathan, what are we expecting today . Yes, a couple of Big Decisions coming this week which will have a big impact on peoples lives in england. Firstly, the two metre rule that everyone has become used to, could be reduced. Heavy hints from ministers that they want to take it down possibly to one metre with added precautions. Wearing a face mask orfacing added precautions. Wearing a face mask or facing away from someone if you are standing particularly close to them, and then, opening up the next sector of the economy. And the Prime Minister has said he wants to stick rigidly to the governments roadmap which could see the hospitality sector, pubs, bars, restau ra nts a nd hospitality sector, pubs, bars, restaurants and more, opening up from saturday the fourth ofjuly. The Prime Minister will chair the usual covid meeting this morning, consult the cabinet tomorrow, and then in the house of commons, announced these changes which could break some good news for one part of the economy which has been worst hit by the coronavirus. But the devil will be in the detail, of course, because nobody is expecting People Places to be able to throw open the doors and welcome people back as normal. Labour and others will be watching carefully to see exactly what the government is going to announce here and it could be good news for those businesses, but it will come with a warning because we are told by a downing street spokesperson this morning that the more we open up, the more important it is that everyone follows the rules and we wont hesitate to put the handbrake on to stop the virus running out of control. And we are told that these latest loosening of restrictions will be the first to be reversed if there is any sign that the virus is on the increase again. Thank you jonathan, we will speak to you a bit later on this morning around 1,300 employees at a Meat Processing plant in germany have tested positive for covid i9. 7,000 workers and their families have been quarantined in an effort to prevent the virus spreading. In another development, germanys r number has risen sharply but Health Officials have put the increase down to localised outbreaks. A 47 year old man has been arrested after three pedestrians, who its believed were all related, died in a car crash in cumbria. The collision happened in dalton in furness at 2 30 yesterday afternoon. Police said the driver has been arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving, and three counts of causing death by dangerous driving. A Senior Police officer has said that a risk of public disorder prevented police in manchester from breaking up a lockdown street party, where two men died as a result of gunshot wounds. The victims, aged 21 and 36, were attacked in the moss side area of the city in the early hours of yesterday morning. No arrests have been made and Police Say Investigations are ongoing. Police investigating the toppling of the Edward Colston statue in bristol during a black lives matter protest have issued images of 15 people they want to speak to. The monument to the 17th century slave trader was lifted out of the harbour after it was pulled down and rolled into the water earlier this month. It was later recovered by the council, which plans to display it in a museum. A team of archaeologists has discovered a major new stone circle, dug thousands of years ago, just a short distance away from stonehenge. They surround the ancient settlement of durrington walls, which lies two miles from stonehenge. Tests suggest the works are neolithic and were excavated more than 4,500 years ago. Its thought they served as a boundary to a sacred area associated with the henge. Latest government figures show that since the Coronavirus Crisis began, more than £28 billion has been spent to protect workers and those who are self employed. Despite this huge figure, however, well over a Million People are still losing out. Sean has more. Good morning. There have been huge announcements over the recent weeks and months from the chancellor, supporting workers. It has kept a lot of people in theirjobs, for now, at least. Mps on the Treasury Select Committee to do more to support those workers whove had plummeting income, and no extra support to call on. Lets have a recap of the main support packages already in place. Some big numbers involved. The biggest cost so far to the treasury is theJob Retention scheme the furlough scheme. That is where the government is subsidising wages but the government that they cant work and stay on the payroll. Latest numbers show that over nine Million People have been able to access this and that its cost nearly £21 billion so far. Theres also the self employment income support scheme, or seiss as its known. This was launched after the furlough scheme, but is pretty similar in scope. 2. 6 Million People have been able to access this one. The cost so far for this is nearly £8 billion. But the big problem for a lot of people is the fact that they dont quite meet the criteria in order to be able to access any of these support measures. This group is estimated to be well over a Million People. That is according to the group of mps looking at it all. Freelancers, people who started a job more recently, self employed people, and Company Directors. One of those whove found themselves unable to get any support is tracy bedwell. We have been talking to her. She runs her own training and consultancy business near southport in lancashire. Up up until covid i9 hit, we were doing very well, in fact, probably we were having one of our best years to date. And then obviously International Travel ended, not being able to put people together in rooms or groups, pretty much meant that everything was either cancelled or postponed into next year. Because we operate from home and we dont have a business premises, we are not eligible for any of the business grants, even though we still have Monthly Business costs that we have to maintain. Then i find out that any limited Company Company directors that pay their paye annually before the end of the tax year are actually exempt from the furlough scheme, so pretty much all of the government help that was offered, grants, furlough scheme, self employed income support, and wasnt eligible for any of them at all. Our last resort was to look at universal credit, something i never thought i would have to do. U nfortu nately thought i would have to do. Unfortunately because we had sold our car unfortunately because we had sold ourcarto unfortunately because we had sold our car to help us through this difficult period, we are not even eligible for universal credit. We areafamily, eligible for universal credit. We are a family, with children, and we are a family, with children, and we are living on a zero income and have been since march. It doesntjust affect my family. I used 20 contractors who also all have families and unless my business can survive, 20 families are also going to be affected. Tracy is one of the limited Company Directors, is the term. Business owners who often pay themselves in a certain way through dividends and not necessarily through paye, the way many workers will be paid across the uk, has meant that the chancellors schemes havent quite worked for them stop if we look at some of the official statistics around that, 715,000 Company Directors could be in a similar situation to tracy, according to the office of national statistics. We spoke to the treasury, who told us, those who do not qualify for the self employed income support scheme or the coronavirusJob Retention scheme will be able to access a range of other support. These include our strengthened welfare safety net, where weve given councils an additional £500 million to support the most vulnerable in our society, and introduced mortgage payment holidays and tax deferrals. These are things that many people can these are things that many people ca n a ccess. These are things that many people can access. There are a lot of people, we will be hearing from others of over the course of this morning, and if you feel like you are one of those freelancers or people who have started a job recently who your income has disappeared but you cant tap into these schemes, we will be hearing more from those over the course of the morning. I am sure lots of people will be getting in touch, thank you. See you later. Lets take a look at todays papers. Most of the front pages this morning are leading with the reading park attack. The guardian says suspect Khairi Saadallah was under investigation by intelligence agencies as a person who might travel abroad for extremist reasons. The main image on the papers front page is of the first victim to be named, james furlong. He isa he is a teacher. The daily mirror also leads on reports that saturdays park attack suspect was on miss radar. Dominating the front page of the times is a photo of mr saadallah. The paper also reports that pubs will take names and Contact Details of customers before they are allowed to enter, under new plans being drawn up for the next stage of lockdown being lifted. Either way, nice to see you. Did you have a nice little break . |j either way, nice to see you. Did you have a nice little break . I did, obviously i was at home because that is where we need to be. Of course i did lots of discovering at home. New walks. The weather this week is much better than the last. I should have waited. Who would have known . This is from the daily telegraph, so many of the papers are looking at what might be the next steps in lockdown and this is an idea from a scientist, actually, that elderly people could actually may be, if they wanted to, where ribbons to educate that they are social distancing and to help life get back to normal. This is professor callum who is speaking in a personal capacity and he says i could see a position where we need as a society to respect social distancing greater in those who are elderly and more vulnerable and potentially people might even consider wearing a ribbon or something on their lapel or a badge to indicates that they would prefer that their social distance was respected, which seems like, i dont know if people want to do that but it may be a good idea if youre worried about people getting too close to you. Slightly less important news. But a butter sales have overtaken the traditionaljam. I was surprised by this Peanut Butter. Are you crunchy or smooth . Crunchy. All of the time . All of the time. I like to mix it up a little bit £88. 9 million last year, it has gone past a jam and we are buying vast amounts of Peanut Butter during lockdown and one manufacturer says nearly half of their sales are the one kg tubs one kg tubs . All non essential shops are allowed to re open across wales today, in the latest easing of lockdown measures in the country. However, the five mile limit on non essentialjourneys remains in place, with a review expected to take place by the 6th ofjuly. 0ur news correspondent tomos morgan has more. For almost three months, high streets across wales and across the uk have been derelict of shoppers. But today marks the seeds of change here in wales as the first minister mark rexford gave the green light for all nonessential shops to reopen. If they do try something on and they dont purchase it, we take the item out of the store room and we stea m the item out of the store room and we steam it professionally with a professional steamer and we wait 2a hours until we can bring it back out. He has been preparing for this day for a while, making sure safety is the top priority for customers and staff. He has adapted and done well online selling his clothes during lockdown, hand delivering stock to customers. But nothing can replace the business that has brought footfall. We wanted to make customers feel safe but still let them have that experience of being able to go shopping again and, you know, shopping experiences something, especially for a small independent like ourselves, is quite personal and we decided to let one or two people in at any one time. So in preparation for the shops to reopen today, the council has put actually a trial in india street in carter. As you can see behind me ballard is in place to increase the pavement area so that shoppers can go between each shop are safe and social distance. As high start training again across wales, the state local rule remains in place, meaning people should only travel within five miles of their home stay local. It will be around another fortnight before people here can travel to see family, friends and nature further afield again. Tomos morgan, bbc news, cardiff. Brazil has become the second country in the world to register more than 50,000 deaths from coronavirus, along with the united states. The news comes just days after the country also reached a million cases of covid 19. 0ur south america correspondent katy watson reports. It was just a little cold, said the brazilian president when the crisis started. And even as the infection soared and the death toll climbed, Jair Bolsonaro carried on. Im no gravedigger, he quipped in april when questioned over the numbers. A week later, he was taken to task again. So what . He answered. Im no miracle worker. Luciano had hoped for miracles. His family has been torn apart by covid 19. His father, marcus antonio, passed away in april. Translation my father was always the pillar of the family, a person who would help others without wanting anything in return. He was a peacemaker. His death has been very painful, but i feel privileged to have had a father like i did. Luciano is a musician and keen member of the Evangelical Church in brazil, like many of bolsonaros supporters. He doesnt pin the blame squarely on the president. He thinks all the politicians have played a part in brazils chaotic response to the pandemic. Here in brazil, covid 19 is no longer about Public Health, its about politics. Each person defending their own interest. There is no unity to bring the pandemic to an end. There is, though, unity in grief here grief growing every single day. As the situation worsens, the president continues to focus on reopening the economy, and says little to ease the pain of those who have lost loved ones. Brazil has hit two more grim milestones in a matter of days more than a million cases and more than 50,000 people dead. But not even these numbers are prompting the president to change course. In the middle of a pandemic, Many Brazilians feel they are lacking leadership, and the numbers keep going up and up. There is no Permanent Health minister, either, in the middle of a pandemic. Two have come and gone. One was fired and the other walked after less than a month in the job. Neither agreed with his strategy. Every country that took this lightly, every country that initially made a joke about it, paid a hefty price. When Politicians Face biology or challenge biology, biology wins by a huge margin, you know . I am very sorry and sad to say that as a brazilian, but it is the reality. We didnt prepare, we didnt take this seriously and now, we see the infection curves exploding. You cannot even describe this. Who can solve this worsening crisis . With so little faith in the politicians now, many are looking for answers from above. Katy watson, bbc news, sao paolo. 26 minutes past six and carol has all of the weather and i think it is going to be a scorcher later in the week, all of the weather and i think it is going to be a scorcher later in the week, isnt it . It certainly is, good morning especially so in the south and east where the temperatures over the highs but more ina temperatures over the highs but more in a second. I want to show you beautiful weather watch your pictures this morning, these clouds are very pictures this morning, these clouds are very rare and pictures this morning, these clouds are very rare and they tend to appear in the summer and they are the highest cloud in the atmosphere. Floating about 50 miles above the earth. 80 kilometres. More taken in 0xfordshire. Again, beautiful colours. As alluded to, increasing heat this week and humidity, not just by day but by night. Especially so in the second half of the week. At the moment we have this weather front which is waving which means it will take the rain northampton south through the course of the next few days. High pressure dominating to the south and low pressure to the north and this is the boundary there between them and it is also the dividing line there between the high temperatures as become further south, looking at about 30 31, and the end of the week some parts of the end of the week some parts of the south east could see 33. In the north and the west it will still be very north and the west it will still be very warm, north and the west it will still be very warm, temperatures in the low to mid 20s, occasionally the high 20s. But today, what we have is this cloud coming in from the north west. It will introduce the rain across Northern Ireland, scotland at times, across north west england, the isle of man, anglesey and North West Wales. Gusty winds as well across the north and west. These are single figures here you can see and double figures here you can see and double figures as well indicate the average wind speed, the gust of cost will be higher but as you come further south, it is not going to be like that at all and it will be a dry day and sunny and breezy and a warm day with highs of 2a degrees. Through this evening and overnight we still have the waving front, bringing rain across Northern Ireland and scotland, Northern England, north wales at times. You can see all the cloud associated with it. Winds will ease and we will have clear skies further south. 0vernight, still in double figures for most of us with the occasional single figure in the north west. By the time we get to tomorrow we will still have this waving front very much with us. Again still bringing the rain south and then drifting back northwards again. We will be starting to weaken again. We will be starting to weaken a touch but a fair bit of cloud associated with it. South, you can see where we have the cloud, again in relation to this front, but a lot of dry weather, a lot of sunshine as we push further south. Temperatures responding accordingly, 27, 28 quite possible around london. 23 in liverpool. 20 in aberdeen. And then, for wednesday itself, whether front will be with us but increasingly, it will be with us but increasingly, it will weaken through the day so more likely to be by then a band of cloud with the odd spot of rain in it. Sunshine on either side and the temperatures really starting dry so 25 in newcastle, 21 in aberdeen, 3031 25 in newcastle, 21 in aberdeen, 30 31 as we pushed down towards the south east. It is friday that we could see temperatures as high as 33 but dont forget, at night it is going to be uncomfortable and humid as well. Some as well. Going to be uncomfortable and humid as well. Some people might 933 uncomfortable. Absolutely. Might find 33. Time to get some duvet out 0rget find 33. Time to get some duvet out or get rid of it altogether, dan easy thank you. Just after 630. Heres a summary of todays main stories from bbc news the town of reading will hold a minutes silence later this morning for the three people who died during a fatal stabbing attack in a park on saturday. The first victim has been named as local teacher james longford. His has been described as inspirational by former pupils. One person remains in hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening. A further easing of the coronavirus lockdown in england will be discussed later, when the Prime Minister meets seniorcabinet ministers and scientific advisers. It comes ahead of a major announcement tomorrow on the possible relaxation of the two metre social distancing rule, plus plans for reopening pubs, restaurants and hairdressers. Labour say theyll support moving to 1 metre under certain circumstances. The name of the teacher was james furlong, sorry about that. Around 1,300 employees at a Meat Processing plant in germany have tested positive for covid 19. 7,000 workers and their families have been quarantined in an effort to prevent the virus spreading. In another development, germanys r number has risen sharply but Health Officials have put the increase down to localised outbreaks. The victims, aged 21 and 36, were attacked in the moss side area of the city in the early hours of yesterday morning. No arrests have been made and Police Say Investigations are ongoing. It is just after it isjust after 6 30. Time now for our regular appointment with a gp, and today were joined by dramir khan. Good to see you again. Where should we start . Hopefully tomorrow, we are beginning to see more easing of lot and procedures. What are your patients saying about what they are concerned about . Good morning, louise, thank you for having me. Patients have some concerned. Last week, there was reporting that people may be able to come out of shielding at the end ofjuly. It hasnt been confirmed by the government. But patients have been asking about that. Although a lot of patients have been happy because they have been restrict did to their houses and gardens, there are some hesitation because of how it might look for them when it when they do come out. There is a lot of anxiety, theirfood do come out. There is a lot of anxiety, their food packages do come out. There is a lot of anxiety, theirfood packages and medical deliveries will be stopped because they will be forced to be outside. I would say to take it in small increments, put your shoes on, put your coat on, stand outside the doorway. That might be enough, and then maybe go for a two minute walk and build it up infive then maybe go for a two minute walk and build it up in five minute increments. And if you have got someone increments. And if you have got someone who can increments. And if you have got someone who can come increments. And if you have got someone who can come with you and socially distance and that might be helpful for some people, socially distance and that might be helpfulfor some people, like i say, lots of people will be happy about it but going from being restricted in your house to being able to go outside again is a big jump for a lot of people. There is a suggestion in one of the papers this morning that perhaps elderly can weigh ribbons or people who are concerned could wear something to show other people that they are concerned about social distance. What do you think . I think that is a really good idea because we have already seen videos of people not socially distancing outside and that only adds to people s anxiety. You are aware that people are worried about being outdoors, they might be shopping, going to the chemist, then at least you can provide them with that respect and that distance, just to ease their anxiety a little bit. What i will say to people who might be anxious, and i have been saying this to my patients as well, if there is some evidence, if you are outside and you see people in groups and you are worried about that, stay two metres away from them because that will help you. There is some evidence that being outdoors and breezes and wins will disburse the virus quickly more quickly than when you are inside so some states some safety there. Winds because of it highlights anxiety which is something we all need to be aware. Some people have a different perception of what two metres is as well. Absolutely. It is difficult to estimate two metres but it is about six foot. Just give these people a wide berth if you can because they are worried about catching the virus and making that known to you by wearing that ribbon. Also, talk to usa wearing that ribbon. Also, talk to us a little bit about holidays because there is so much concern about where, when, et cetera. Some countries are reopening tourism to tourists from the uk, but non essential travel is not advised at the moment, but what is your advice to people . Book a holiday . Sta rt advice to people . Book a holiday . Start thinking about it . advice to people . Book a holiday . Start thinking about it . I never thought i would be asked this as a gp, normally i am talking about travel vaccines rather than whether it is safe to go somewhere. It is unusual. My advice for the patients so far, yes, you are absolutely right, the government advice is absolutely only essential travel and i reiterate that to my patients. There is talks of averages and travel corridors which are just buzzwords to me. But i would say hold off until we know it is absolutely safe. We have already seen a absolutely safe. We have already seen a second absolutely safe. We have already seen a second wave absolutely safe. We have already seen a second wave of infections in germany, china, we saw two people u nfortu nately germany, china, we saw two people unfortunately introduce the infection back in new zealand. It is very early days and i know it is very early days and i know it is very tempting because we havent been able to go abroad but were just not quite sure what this virus is going to do in september, 0ctober, is going to do in september, october, november, if there is not a vaccine by then, what the winter will do to this virus. If you are looking for some winter sun, just be careful because we know people have had trouble getting their airfares back over the last three months and i wouldnt some wouldnt want somebody to spend lots of money and not be able to get back either. Just wait until it is absolutely safe. From your point of view, as a gp, if it does change, the social distancing, from two metres, to around one metre, whatever it is, we will find out tomorrow, how much of a difference does that make to you . There is always a risk of the virus spreading when social distancing shortens. I have looked at the evidence and i think it is pretty strong for it to go from two metres to one metre because it doesnt increase the risk that much but they will always be a risk. I work in an inner city area and we havent seen a massive drop in cases just yet, but, that shortened length means just prolong a bit more. If they do agree to go to one metre, they will be good evidence behind that, i hope. Thank you for all your advice as ever, have a good day, thank you. Thank you, bye bye. It is monday morning. Sally had a good week. I was watching from home, sally, well talking about the return of the premier league as well. The sports stories keep on coming. We will start with the news from last night. Liverpools wait to clinch their First Premier League title will go on a little longer. They had, theoretically, a chance of winning it tonight had they beaten everton in the merseyside derby. But the game finished goalless meaning Jurgen Klopps side will have to wait till wednesday at the earliest to be confirmed as champions. Adam wild reports. Commentator liverpool are dragging it out. For the champions in waiting, the waiting goes on. What once. Waiting, the waiting goes on. What once. In march bit towards the premier league title now feels like a crawl. A draw at everton and they area point a crawl. A draw at everton and they are a point closer. It is a derby and we felt the derby even when the crowd isnt here. That is how it is a top both teams know what were going for so it is ok, but again, football should be a bit more than both teams probably showed. For Jurgen Klopps side, the joy will almost certainly arrive eventually. But the sort shortest of trips to their neighbours everton felt worlds away from any moses size derby that has gone before. These masks, distancing, biosecurity checks, this is what greets the football elite. They might be european and Club World Champions but a chant temporary changing room in the car park will have to suffice. And of course, empty stands. Without the passion of the fans, this normally huge fixture never really got going. Commentator the target m huge fixture never really got going. Commentator the target in truth, it was everton who went the closest to winning it. Had it not been for excellent goalkeeping and a little liverpool luck, it would have. A draw sends liverpool fans back to their calculators. Much depends on what happens tonight, should Manchester City failed to beat burnley, then liverpool can win the title by beating Crystal Palace on wednesday. If not, liverpools weight will go on just a little longer. Adam wild, bbc news. Liverpools wait. Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has warned his team to be more clinical as they gave their hopes of a top four finish a boost. Despite dominating possession, they needed two goals in two minutes to come from behind and beat second bottom aston villa 2 1. Chelsea now five points clear of fifth place man united while villa are a point from safety. Newcastle are 11 points clear of the bottom three, but manager steve bruce doesnt think his team are safe yet. A0 Million Pound strikerjoelinton ending his six month wait for a league goal as they beat Sheffield United 3 0. And tennis world number one Novak Djokovic is among several players being tested for coronavirus in the last few hours, after he was forced to cancel the final of a tournament he set up in croatia. Its because grigor dimitrov, who played in the event, tested positive for the virus. He posted this from hospital saying he was so sorry for any harm he might have caused. Already come and hang out there djokovics coach and event director, Goran Ivanisevic announced the cancellation. Djokovic set up the event to help players get fit after several weeks without competition. Thousands of fans attended. Theyve been criticised due to the lack of social distancing, which isnt a requirement in croatia. We wait to see what those test results are. It is also worth noting that actually tomorrow, jamie murray and his brother andy murray will be playing in a tournament here, to get british players back to match fitness but that is behind closed doors with full social distancing. Thanks, sally. Where did i see the murrays . I saw them on the one show. They were trying to get some in the bin and andy murray didnt get any. When we did it, andy murray did a ridiculous amount, he did really well. The skills have all left him now. Oh, dear. For many young people, already struggling with employment or burdened with student loans, the coronavirus pandemic has had a huge, and damaging, impact. Thats because Research Shows that theyre more likely to lose theirjobs, and face long term financial problems. 0ur media editor, amol rajan, has been to rural warwickshire to speak to those now rethinking their futures. Come on then come on, pigs raised in the shadow of a financial crisis and now counting the cost of covid 19, like millions of others, these young people know their future needs a rethink. Furloughs affected myself and my mother. Difficult less income coming into the house so ive had to kind of compensate for the money thats not coming in paying bills, rent. Does money stress you out . It does. From being in a single parent family, thats very stressful especially now my mothers been furloughed. So itsjust a bit stressful now and then. But as long as ive still got a job, thats fine, then were all good. I was studying my a levels, which were cancelled. I dont know how this is going to affect jobs and graduate schemes and stuff after ive finished university. Just emotionally, how have you found the whole experience of this pandemic . I feel like its almost a rite of passage to take your a levels at the end of school, and it seems weird. When i talk, in 20 years time, and people ask me, what did you get in your a levels . What did you do . Ill be, like, well, i did them, but i didnt actually have to sit the exams. So theres definitely, like, positives and negatives to it. Covid 19s created an environment of uncertainty for me as a student, going forward, as far as my graduate roles and potential jobs. How do you feel, sort of being part of a generation that is entering an Economic Contraction . In terms of the economic burden on us, i think our generations got quite a large weight of responsibility on our shoulders and weve got to make sure that. You know, weve got a lot to pay into the system. I think were expecting to be taxed and i think there is a lot of money being paid out, rightly so, with tax breaks on businesses and people on furlough. Its necessary and it has to be done, so i think everyone just has to play their part. Covids given me some real uncertainty about where my future will go and, also, its affected how i can travel and what i can do and get experience within Different Industries during this period of time, which would have been quite useful. Ive found it really difficult to find a job. I wasnt finding anywhere that would have staff like me. Obviously, as im going to be a student september, i couldnt get a full time job. So covid 19 has actually had a quite positive effect with my work. The farm shop has got really busy. Ive still got to work. Cows have still got to be fed, pigs have got to be fed. Its had a really good impact at work, because our farm shop hasjust gone crazy. A lot of people, theyve realised local produce, home bred, no food miles, its really good. Its often been said about this virus that were all in it together, but actually, each generation is having a very different experience. Older people are more likely to fall ill and younger people, already facing exorbitant house prices or student loans, are now going to be burdened by huge new national debts, as well as their own. Amol rajan, bbc news, warwickshire. So many things that are changing to think about. Lets go back to our top story now, and details are starting to emerge of those who lost their lives as they sat with friends and family in forbury gardens on saturday evening. History teacherjames furlong was one of them. His parents called him as a wonderful man. The right reverend 0livia graham. Thank you very much for spending a bit of time with us on bbc breakfast this morning. As an idea of, first of all, what the last few days have been like in reading. Well of all, what the last few days have been like in reading. Well i think that Reading Town Centre has been very quiet. People are shocked and subdued and coming to terms with the reality of what happened on saturday night. A beautiful warm night when people were just enjoying themselves and suddenly, lives have changed and the town has gone into shock and morning, i think. And there is a minutes silence taking place later this morning which has been organised by the council. You think, from some of the conversation is no doubt you have been having over the past 2a hours or so, do you think it will help people . I think a moments silence always helps with a Big Reflection and that will happen at ten oclock this morning and at 11 oclock some of the faith and Civic Leaders and politicians will be meeting in the centre of reading to lay flowers in memory of the victims so lay flowers in memory of the victims so that will also be an important moment to mark this event. How do you think, talking about the shock which always reverberates around the community after Something Like this, how are people going to be able to sort of move forward and get through this . 0bviously they will but what is the process and how can you help with things like that . is the process and how can you help with things like that . I think at a time like this, a Community Like reading will come together and support each other. It is a wonderful multicultural, diverse and supportive, Cohesive Community and i think that people find strength in each other but also of course in their faith communities and the faith communities will be gathering together gathering around people. St pauls church in wokingham will be open today from nine until four to allow those who are particularly affected either death of james furlong to come in and light candles and white pages in a book of memories affected by the death. It is the whole of the School Community at the holt school and of course jamess friends and family and other churches in the wokingham area will also be rallying around because the whole town has quite a big catchment. I suppose specifically for those people in the park and some of the things they will have seen, it does have a sort of lasting impact, this sort of thing. It is hard for a community to move forward. I think people are waking up this morning to a new reality. Yesterday everyone was numb and today people are realising that actually, this could happen in the centre of any town and that leaves a sense of real concern, i think, and underlying anxiety. But people get through it, people recoverfrom trauma and i think we can do this if we do it together and do it cohesively, which i am sure reading well. A busy day today. I wondered also this morning what kind of message would you like to send to the people of reading today . Love and prayers from myself, from all of the christian churches, from all of the christian churches, from all of the faith communities i know, we will be standing together in all of this. We are with you, we are among you, lets do all of this together. Thank you for spending time with us today and really good to talk to you, but is 0livia graham, live on brea kfast you, but is 0livia graham, live on breakfast this morning and one minutes silence. Did i say 0livia colman . 0livia graham, bishop of reading. 0ne minutes silence taking place in reading a little bit later on this morning and something that we will be reflecting on through the programme this morning as well. This was supposed to be a summer of celebrations for sandra and allan teasdale, but like millions of us, their plans were dashed by the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of marking their 70th birthdays with a trip to spain, the couple from fleetwood were left fighting for their lives after both contracting covid 19. Breakfasts Jayne Mccubbin has been hearing their story. And it is a remarkable one. True love came like to centre and ref two, 5a they married. And when the country went into lockdown, they had been planning a huge sum of celebration in spain for their 70th birthday is just days apart. celebration in spain for their 70th birthday isjust days apart. I can honestly say i have never loved anyone as much as i do sandra. Its. She isjust the anyone as much as i do sandra. Its. She is just the love of my life. Have never been so happy and we are still so happy. And you have come so we are still so happy. And you have come so close to losing it all. Very much so. The scariest moments of our lives. Absolutely. Spain fell by the wayside as they spent sandras birthday in isolation and one week later they both suddenly fell ill, Text Messages between sandra and her daughter the following day show how quickly they both deteriorated. Yeah, it was. I was. Quickly they both deteriorated. Yeah, it was. Iwas. It was heart wrenching. Hi, how are you both doing . The last couple of days we dont seem to know what is going on, we are lightheaded, tired, dizzy, dont want any food or drink, do not know if it is the virus or not. I wrote im sure it is nothing to worry about, chill out and try not to do too much. Let me know if you need anything. Really cant do this anymore, i fainted again and allan has been hallucinating. We cant even walk about. We really need some help. Im getting dressed and coming around. Do you remember that moment . Absolutely. When she sent that to me on saturday, that is not my mum. My mum does not do things like that. Does that bring metal back . Yeah, it does, it really but i cannot do this anymore, i am really serious. We need help. The daughter dialled 999 and they were taken to hospital in the same ambulance, they were both taken straight into icu. Their chances of survival were 50 50. A final text message read be strong, mum. You will get through this, i know you well. We all love you very much. Keep that mask on. Just keep thinking that the mask is going to make you better. I love you so much and look forward to seeing you when you get better and get out of there. Love you loads and loads and loads. Hard. Hard to read it again, yeah, very difficult. You could see each other . In the next room. We could see each other through the blinds. You could see it other fighting for life . See each other through the blinds with our masks on and i cried and cried and cried. It was awful. I just thought im not going to make it, im not going to get out of here. You are thinking you are going to lose everything. Both had com pletely to lose everything. Both had completely different symptoms. Both had been in isolation for six weeks when they fell ill. So neither really knew how they caught the virus. For a fortnight it was touch and go but slowly, they started to recover. And by allans 70th birthday, they turned a corner. And they said we have a surprise for you come in and have a meal together. And then they brought this birthday ca ke and then they brought this birthday cake in which was a caterpillar, chocolate caterpillar cake. And they sang happy birthday. chocolate caterpillar cake. And they sang happy birthday. I think for me it was so special because when they brought the cake into allan, i am crying now, it just brought the cake into allan, i am crying now, itjust got like really emotional but it was really loving and smiling and it was the first time that i had seen him for a long time that i had seen him for a long time just smile. Two days before sandra was given the all clear to go home, allan was cheered off the board. All of the doctors and nurses and everybody line up. Well done walked you down the corridor and that me at the end so that allan could be wheeled past me. As soon as he came up and i said i will be home soon, hopefully. I cried. She cried, yeah. As usual, i cried. It was just. Goodbye do you remember taking those vows in sickness and in health . Absolutely. Yeah. And you could never have dreamt. You could not write it. No, you couldnt. You could not have made it up. We didnt actually say 70 is going to be our year and were going to do this and do that and covid came and. M what it all out. 71 is going to be your year it had better be 2. 5 if we have any chance you have the rest of your life to look forward to. What would you like to say to each other . Ijust to. What would you like to say to each other . I just love to. What would you like to say to each other . Ijust love you very much and i look forward to the rest of my life with you. Were so lucky to have found it so late on, we really are, arent we . Yeah. It is a once in a lifetime. Really are, arent we . Yeah. It is a onceinalifetime. Count our blessings every day. Every day we say we are so blessings every day. Every day we say we are so lucky. What a story that is thatsjust lovely, isnt it . That has warmed the cockles of my heart. Wow carol, gosh, you have a beautiful thing gosh, you have a beautiful thing there this morning isnt itjust lovely. Good morning. This assault went by the sea, sent in by a weather watcher sam in north east england and look at the skyline blue skies and this week, what is going to happen is the temperature will continue to rise but so is the humidity. By the time we get to friday, in the south east could hit 33 degrees. But not everywhere of course will reach those levels. Summer course will reach those levels. Summer in the south east. Most will be in the low to mid 20s and some the mid to high 20s. If we take a look at the High Pressure here, it is in charge in the south and low pressure influencing the weather in the north west and in between we have got this weather front which is producing rain and it is waving, it is going north and the flight leak, so is going north and the flight leak, so it is taking the rain with it north and the but it is also, the line of demarcation between the hotter conditions and the very warm conditions behind it. More on that ina conditions behind it. More on that in a second. What we have this morning is quite a bit of cloud coming in from the north and west and also some rain and gusty winds, particularly across the north west of scotland. The rain will push across much of scotland, Northern Ireland, fringing into Northern England, isle of man, anglesey and north well through the course of the day but you can cloud building ahead of it for the further south and east you are, the sunnier the skies will be. These circles indicate average wind strength, the gusts will be strongest across the north and west, touching a0 or a5 miles an hour. Temperatures today 21 in liverpool, 2a in london. Maybe 25. Heading through the evening and overnight we still have the weather front and you can see this time, instead of going towards the east it is pushing a little bit back towards the north and the west but it is still bringing in some rain. The winds will tend to ease and we have booked for clear skies as we go south. By no means will be a cold night, most of us staying in double figures. As we head through tuesday, we still have this wiggling weather front, High Pressure still in charge in the south but the winds easing across the north. Translated, it means will still have all of this rain coming across Northern Ireland and parts of scotland. Drops of rain getting into Northern England and north wales from this think of cloud but the far north of scotland is seeing some sunshine at times and has become further south for the rest of england and wales, a lot of sunshine and temperatures continuing to keep up, 27 in london, 20 in aberdeen. For wednesday, we still have this weather front but by now it really isa weather front but by now it really is a weak feature and although we may start with some rain, it will be much more than a band of cloud by the time we get to the end of the afternoon. Sunshine in either side of it and temperatures rising. Looking at 30, possibly 31 degrees in london. 27 in hull, 20 in belfast, 21 in aberdeen. What about the rest of the week . On thursday, once again those temperatures continuing to climb. The chance of some showers across the north and west and then on friday, very much like were going to see the highest temperatures somewhere in the south and east, around about 33 degrees, and east, around about 33 degrees, and we could well see the start of the thundering breakdown coming in across the north and the west but thejury is across the north and the west but the jury is still out a little on that and i will keep you posted as we go through the rest of the week. Thats it from me. The headlines are coming up. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. 0ur headlines today a minutes silence will take place in reading this morning, to rememember the three People Killed in fatal stabbings. Moving away from the two metre rule in england the government will unveil more plans this week to restart the economy, including the reopening of pubs and hairdressers. Billions of pounds of support for workers already announced by the chancellor but at least a Million People cant access it, from Business Owners to freelancers and new starters. Ill look at whats happening to those who feel like theyre falling through the cracks. Liverpools hopes of celebrating their first ever premier league title are on hold as they could only manage a goalless draw at everton, with managerjurgen klopp admitting they came close to losing the merseyside derby. 36 year old james furlong, one of the three people who died in saturday evenings horrifying terror attack in the centre of reading, and the only one whos been named so far. Detained at the scene, he was rearrested under section a1 of the terrorism act 2000. Mr saadallah was known to m15, but they decided he was not a genuine risk or immediate threat. I think at a time like this, the community of reading will come together and support each other. It isa together and support each other. It is a multicultural, supportive and Cohesive Community and i think that people will find strength in each other but also in their faith communities and they will be gathering together and gathering around people. Redding has been left shocked people will be more watchful about their surroundings. Really shocked, a bit scared, just cause it is very weird to see where you live on the news. This morning at 10am, the town will pause to remember those who didnt make it through the weekend. John mcmanus, bbc news. John mcmanus is live in reading now, outside the park. I think redding waking up to what is going to be a difficult week as it gets to grips and comes to terms with what actually happened in the park on saturday. What started out asa park on saturday. What started out as a very park on saturday. What started out as a very normal saturday evening with friends gathered to see each other and enjoy the sunshine, on the longest day of the year, turn into a really frightening and from the sounds of it extremely violent terror attack. The focus of course on that investigation this morning, particularly, what m15 may have known about the suspect and his previous dealings with them. They didnt think that he was a risk at the time that i think they will be some focus on that now, and particularly, the police want to know what the motive was. They say they are not sure at the moment but they are not sure at the moment but they are not sure at the moment but they are of course treating this as a terror attack. I think for most people in reading this morning, it will be the one minutes silence at 10am which will be the focus of their day. It is going to be very sad and very poignant, especially for anybody who knew those three vic evans who started saturday is a very normal day but i no longer with us those three victims. A couple of Big Decisions coming this week which will have a big impact in england. Firstly, that to me to rule which we have all become so me to rule which we have all become so familiar with, heavy hints from the Prime Minister that he would like to see that reduced, so that could become a one metre rule with perhaps some added guidance to wear masks where possible or face away from people if you are standing particularly closely. That in itself could have a big impact on the number of pupils, say, that schools can number of pupils, say, that schools ca n allow number of pupils, say, that schools can allow back, how many people shops can allow in at any one time and crucially, on the hospitality sector which has suffered more than most on the coronavirus pandemic. And on that, the Prime Minister will also announce in the house of commons tomorrow which part of the economy will be opening up next and the expectation is that as per the governments roadmap, which Boris Johnson says he wants to stick rigidly to, it will be pubs, bars, restau ra nts a nd rigidly to, it will be pubs, bars, restaurants and other such businesses which will be able to reopen, albeit in limited capacity, from july four, so that is a week on saturday. Some of the things we have heard about that could come into force to allow those businesses coming back, having Table Service only, asking people to register their names before they go in, that sort of thing. So businesses will be watching the details closely, but potentially some good news for them, but it does all come with a warning because downing street are saying that these measures are being taken because people have followed the guidance broadly, very closely, up until this point, and the virus is, toa until this point, and the virus is, to a large extent, under control. But a downing street spokesperson saying they are not going to hesitate to put the handbrake on again to stop the virus from becoming out of control again. The latest loosening of these restrictions will be the first to be reversed is there a if there is any increase in cases. We will be speaking to james broken share coming up on the programme. Yes, the security minister. Face coverings will be mandatory on public transport in scotland from this morning including all buses, trains, taxis and trams. Meanwhile all non essential shops are allowed to re open across wales today, in the latest easing of lockdown measures there. Shortly well speak to tomos morgan in cardiff but first lets go to Alexandra Mackenzie who is at Glasgow Central station for us this morning. Lets speak now to our reporter tomos morgan in cardiff. Good morning. Before coronavirus, Glasgow Central station would have been extremely busy on a monday morning, but not this morning. What we can see today is a staff behind me who have been preparing and putting masks out for any people coming off the train this morning. There is a 1 way system in place with the green arrows here so people can keep that to me to distance. This is where people will now leave the station. In scotland from today, wearing Something Like this, not a medicalface mask, but a wearing Something Like this, not a medical face mask, but a Face Covering, something that covers your mouth and your nose will become, or has become, mandatory on all forms of public transport. It is notjust here at central station, it is if you are on a ferry going to the Western Isles today or if you are also travelling on a tram in edinburgh and here at the train station at central station, but the main advice from the Scottish Government is to work from home and not to be using public transport, but to use public transport only if absolutely necessary. Now, there are some exceptions. You dont have to wear a Face Covering if you are underfive, you wear a Face Covering if you are under five, you dont wear a Face Covering if you are underfive, you dont have wear a Face Covering if you are under five, you dont have to wear a Face Covering if you have issues with breathing or if you have a physical medical problem that you are not able to hold a Face Covering in place. Lets speak now to our reporter tomos morgan in cardiff. As you mentioned earlier, all nonessential shops will reopen today across wales. I am here injd sports in cardiff and as you can see, they have been busy here to make sure that people are aware of the social distancing measures that need to be keptin distancing measures that need to be kept in force so that shops like this can reopen. Two metre markings are all across the floor and people coming in one shopping down one side and going out the other as they go in here. Next, joining me here is the manager to stop nick, how much ofa the manager to stop nick, how much of a task has it been to get things ready to reopen today . It has been difficult. We have been in store for the last 2. 5 weeks to make sure that staff are safe that customers can shopin staff are safe that customers can shop ina staff are safe that customers can shop in a safe environment. Are you expecting people today . We have seen a few people outside. We have lots of people inquiring as to when were reopening so i do think it will be a busy day. You a limit of customers, 100, if, for example, we see the same cues we saw in england last week, will you be taking measures to restrict the amount of people coming in . Restrict the amount of people coming in . Queues. Restrict the amount of people coming in . Queues. R number of 101 is going to be a limit and if we cant maintain social distance we will have reduced the number so that people can shop safely. Our number put up the isle of anglesey in north wales, there has been an outbreak there in a chicken manufacturing plant. There has been a doubling of coronavirus cases of people working there so the Welsh Government, as i say, talking about potentially putting measures in place and locking down again to protect the residents of the island to make sure the virus doesnt spread again across north wales. Tomos, take you very much indeed. Thank you. Around 1,300 employees at a Meat Processing plant in germany have tested positive for covid 19, meaning 7,000 workers and theirfamilies have been quarantined in an effort to prevent the virus spreading. Germanys r number has risen sharply but Health Officials have put the increase down to localised outbreaks. 0ur europe correspondent Damien Mcguinness is in berlin. Damien, whats the latest . What we are saying is, as you have said, over the last couple of days, that r factor, the reproduction rate, has shot up sharply in germany. Four weeks, it rate, has shot up sharply in germany. Fourweeks, it was rate, has shot up sharply in germany. Four weeks, it was hovering below one, which is what you need to stop it spreading, now it has gone up stop it spreading, now it has gone up to 2. 88 which means that almost three people infected on average for every one person infected. Now, we have to preface that with a big cave yet because what that means, really, is it is really down to localised outbreaks. Caveat. We have had a few specific outbreaks across germany. 0ne few specific outbreaks across germany. One of them was the Meat Processing plant you mentioned. That is the largest Meat Processing plant in germany and it is a very severe outbreak indeed, having a big impact on that region. Kindergartens and schools have been closed down and no generalised lockdown so far but it still might come if it gets worse. They have also been a number of sporadic outbreaks in various different blocks of lats in different blocks of lats in different cities across germany. So far, though, all of those have been managed to stay local. Blocks of flats. It hasnt spread to the Broader Community and that is the challenge was not it does mean it brings up the r factor but it does mean that across germany there is no sign ofa mean that across germany there is no sign of a second wave or a large spike of infections across the country. Thank you for that, the latest from berlin this morning. A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after three pedestrians, believed to be related, were killed in cumbria. The incident happened in dalton in furness at 2 30 yesterday afternoon. Despite having two prosthetic legs, tony is doing a 10km walking challenge, and we just wanted to let you know that the total on hisjustgiving page is now more than £806,000 and hes only halfway through his challenge. Good luck to him finishing it and well done fantastic amazing stuff, isnt it . It is quarter past seven. You are watching breakfast on the bbc. Good morning to you. This morning, police are continuing to question 25 year old Khairi Saadallah, a Libyan National who lived in reading, over the stabbing attacks that took place on saturday. Lets just recap on what we know. Atjust before 7pm, police were notified of a knife attack in forbury gardens, near Reading Town Centre. Thames Valley Police say officers arrested a man within five minutes of the call. Several Armed Police Officers were seen going into a block of flats in reading just after 11pm. The next morning, police said they were treating the incident as an act of terrorism. A few hours later, the man understood to be the suspect was named as saadallah. Just before 5pm, local teacher james furlong was named as the first victim of the attack. Lets get the latest on the investigation now from the thames Valley Police and crime commissioner, anthony stansfeld. Thank you very much for being with us on bbc breakfast this morning. Cani us on bbc breakfast this morning. Can i ask you first of all in terms of the way that Police Responded to the attack, what have you made of their actions over the course of that horrible incident in reading . They reacted incredibly quickly. He was picked up within about five minutes of the first report. So i think, and i think the opposite showed considerable bravery picking him up absolutely straightaway, knowing very little about what it actually happened at that stage. And there is one particular officer, i believe a police sergeant, who tackled the suspect to the ground. It is often when you hear about actions like that, i know the police are highly trained in areas like this but you must be very proud of those actions which probably stopped further damage from being done. Yes, iam further damage from being done. Yes, i am extremely proud. I mean, they said the reaction was so quick and the vehicle was passing, it was called in, saw him, they got out and he was immediately taken down. And they got the right person, he did not get back to his house or anything like that, so it was dealt with very, very quickly but of course the unfortunate thing is it happened in the first place and how it happened. The way things like this i covered these days is often a sort of very Quick Reaction on social media and anybody who is on social media and anybody who is on social media and anybody who is on social media on that evening would have seen a number of videos being shared, showing the actual event taking place, posted online. I know there was then quite of a sort of a strong reaction to the fact that people were doing that but how does that affect hinder an investigation i think the evidence will be valuable in any prosecution that follows it is obviously very useful but people on the spot also need to make sure that they themselves are kept safe and people if they possibly can react and stop it. It is always rather a delicate area there, whether you do something yourself or whether you can get out of the way but i think in this particular case it happened so quickly, he took out his knife and stabbed a number of people and then run out of the park where he was picked up almost straightaway by the police. What i am referring to i think is the fact that police have said dont share on social media but rather send it to them so they can use it as part of the investigation. Yes, i think that is fair that people are trying to gather evidence or Something Like this and you need to look at it first and see exactly what is there anybody who has photographic evidence should give it straight to the police. And we were speaking to the bishop of reading, the right reverend 0livia graham a little bit earlier on about the minutes silence taking place today and she was referring to the obvious shock that there has been in reading and they are still continuing this morning, and it will take a long time for the community to recover. Yes, i think it is something that gives people a tremendous shock. I live in newbury, halfway between hungerford and reading, and i was rather involved in the hungerford incident which was over 30 years ago now. But there is still a scar left by that and of course that was on a horrendous scale because a man was using a number of firearms. This one isa using a number of firearms. This one is a very serious attack, i think it is a very serious attack, i think it is the first one for about 35 years, since hungerford. It is very unusual when these things happen but they are absolutely shocking. You very much talking to us this morning. He isa much talking to us this morning. He is a Thames Valley crime commission. Commissioner. Plenty to discuss there with chris phillips, whos the former head of the National Counter Terrorism Security office. Hejoins us now. First of all lets touch on the sort of Police Response and the bravery of Police Response and the bravery of both police and also bystanders as well, quite extraordinary. Quite extraordinary and i think especially of two or three weeks of police bashing it is good to see that the country is appreciating some of the work that the police have done. Sergeant that tackled him would not have known whether he was armed with a gun ora have known whether he was armed with a gun or a knife or anything but thought nothing of going straight in and rugby tackling him and bringing him tojustice so and rugby tackling him and bringing him to justice so brilliant work by the police and now they have a job to do with the investigation. Talking about that, it was moved from a murder into a counterterrorism investigation so what would have changed things . Counterterrorism investigation so what would have changed things7m is about motive. The fact is it is still a Murder Investigation of course the motive has to be for ideological or religious reasons as to why the violence was caused and i would imagine that by the actions of the person and he committed these crimes, and also by what they found, what the police found when they did the searches of the house, would have given them reason to think that there was a motive like that behind it. So the police have two be careful not to give out false information. You on the first stages of these investigations were not hear a great deal but the information will come out as the court case comes together to be careful. Things that we do know so far but he had been investigated previously by m15 and that will be key, wont it . It is a point of interest. It would have been more concerning if he had not have been at least looked at by m15 because that would mean that they had no idea that he was on the radar. But u nfortu nately, idea that he was on the radar. But unfortunately, and we have said this many times with every attack, there are so many many times with every attack, there are so many people in that situation where they are of interest m15 and the police but just where they are of interest m15 and the police butjust the resources are not there to follow everyone. Do you think this incident may lead to a chase, for instance, in the Terror Threat level . It clearly has not, and that is because they did not think they dont think there is anyone else involved, and certainly they have no reason to think that at they have no reason to think that at the moment, as was said yesterday, so the moment, as was said yesterday, so until, unless there is some idea that there are other people involved in the group, and you will not see the terrorism threat level and there is no more likelihood of it being a terrorist attack tomorrow than there was three days before this happened so was three days before this happened so that is the big issue. We have to be concerned though that there are an enormous and out of number in this country that could do this kind of thing. Appreciate your time. If you have just switched of thing. Appreciate your time. If you havejust switched on of thing. Appreciate your time. If you have just switched on your tv, of thing. Appreciate your time. If you havejust switched on your tv, a reminder that in about ten minutes time were going to be speaking to security Ministerjames Brokenshire live on this programme for you this morning. Lets go back to another story now. The uks largest Tour Operator, tui, will start offering holidays to destinations across spain and greece from the 11th ofjuly, with new health and Safety Measures in place such as mandatory Face Coverings on flights. While the current advice from the Foreign Office is still to avoid all but essential International Travel, tui says it has absolute confidence the government will have relaxed travel restrictions by then. Lets talk to the firms managing director for the uk and ireland, andrew flintham. Thank you for coming on and speaking to us about this this morning. We are talking about the fact that this is not going against official government advised but it is a bit ofa government advised but it is a bit of a stab. How much of a chance are you taking with this . Are you confident things will change in time . I have to say it is obviously a really exciting thing that we can talk about restarting the Holiday Programme and we are talking about starting a small and building up. We would normally take 6 million customers on holiday in the summer and this is obviously a small number of that we are talking about restarting. I think what is important is clearly the health and safety of our colleagues and customers, but is the number one priority, and because of that we clearly ta ke priority, and because of that we clearly take the lead from government and their advice around how the travel advice may evolve and how the travel advice may evolve and how the travel advice may evolve and how the quarantine rules may evolve and how we will hopefully move forward towards air corridors to allow us to go on holiday again and enjoying that little bit of magic thatis enjoying that little bit of magic that is the family holiday. What is really important is the fact that the air bridges all the air corridors, we dont know exactly where they will be going ahead. But we are hopeful that we are confident and we are a big business, we take a bit of time to wind up operations and if the government announces in a week or so or two weeks and tells us week or so or two weeks and tells us we can restart operations, we cannot do that overnight so we have to have a little bit of time to wind up the whole system to be able to get going again it is a little bit of a gamble but if it does not go ahead on those dates we will revise our plans and move forward. What sort of destinations can holiday makers were thinking about this i have something in mind, there could they possibly fly to . In mind, there could they possibly fly to . We are talking about a small programme to start with, a of our normal programme, really quite small, obese, parma, corfu, greece, tenerife, so there is realfamily favourite and favourites of all the boughs in terms of enjoyment holiday but if we start now we will then start to ramp up the kind of programme through august and the plan is through august we will be operating may be up to 50 of our normal european operation, not operation but the european operation. The other important thing that if you want customers to have holiday that they want, we come up with a promise and the promise is really quite simple if it is going to impact your holiday, it is not going to be holiday that you can really enjoy, we will not take you there. If quarantine is involved we will not take you there. And if you are will not take you there. And if you a re really will not take you there. And if you are really unsure about whether or not you want to go injuly or august or not sure what it will be or what it will look like we will allow you to amend your holiday for free to a different date so we are trying to be as flexible as possible and we really wa nt be as flexible as possible and we really want to try to get going so that we can start to see customers, they may be able to enjoy a holiday in the summer. For people thinking about this, what sort of measures will you put in place particularly on board make sure that things are done on the right way . So the great thing about our business is we own every bit of the journey so we own the flights, we own the transfer to the flights, we own the transfer to the hotel, and we only experience in the hotel, and we only experience in the hotel, and we only experience in the hotel, maybe the hotels are our own, so when you the hotel, maybe the hotels are our own, so when you go the hotel, maybe the hotels are our own, so when you go aboard the aircraft you will be wearing a mask and the aircraft will be cleaned, there will be deep cleaning after every flight, there will be disinfected every 2a hours, so the whole health and safety piece on the aircraft, albeit in the hotel and resorts, they will have much greater social distancing in the resort, we will have the restaurant experiences different, there will be fewer tables, longer opening hours, so all of these things have been taken into consideration so that people can still the holiday and we all know there is a bit of a new normal out there is a bit of a new normal out there that we have to get used to. Cani there that we have to get used to. Can i ask you, you mentioned in this interview this morning about customers being the number one priority and making promises to them, we have quite a few e mails and comments coming in from people who are saying about holidays they booked in the past and they are asking me specifically to ask you about being forced to pay final bill for holidays that were never going to happen and then not being able to get through to staff because you have not got enough i know you furloughed a number of staff that make up the cost of those customer numbers are not being answered and no reply to e mails and having to fight tooth and claw they say to get money back for holidays they have not been able to go on. What will you do about those people . So, we promise to have challenges where we obviously have challenges when the pandemic hit and we went into hibernation and our shops closed and we had to fall back on trying to manage the situation with our customers and i will be the first to say, and i wrote to our customers, that at times we have let them down andi that at times we have let them down and i apologised for that and i apologise again to them around that. We area apologise again to them around that. We are a big business as i said and we have cancelled 550,000 bookings for holidays, about 1. 5 million customers. And the challenge we have isa customers. And the challenge we have is a business that works really well when it is up and operating at its normal office environment, its difficult to operate when you are in effect working from home so the retail customers an example, we quickly learned that our retail customers can only really effectively be served in the retail estates in the shops. And actually when they were closed that was a challenge so to do that, we have had to build systems, we have had to actually got a lot of our retail staff, 750 homeworkers now, to be able to serve our customers. So we have got in place everything we now need to deliver that. But i will be honest, there was a period where we had to relearn normal and we had to put all those things in place and that was very difficult for our customers and i apologise for that but i can absolutely assure, not only are we hopefully going back flying and taking people on holiday which means we will hopefully not be cancelling anymore holidays but now the service they will receive from us is as good as you would expect it to be and as good as we wanted to be. And what about those who are still fighting for things that happened during that period you are talking about and still talking about getting money back and trying to work through the terms and conditions which were in place when they booked the holidays in the first place. We know we have a small number of customers that were working through and there seems to be the complex in terms of their bookings all the way that they have paid or those things so we either we have a list of those issues and we have a list of those issues and we are working day and night to resolve them. I appreciate you talking to us this morning. Just coming up to half past seven and carol has a look ahead at the wea ks and carol has a look ahead at the weaks weather and carol has a look ahead at the wea ks weather and they and hes only halfway through his challenge. Scheme high temperatures by the end of the week. We wont all see 33 celsius but for all of us, our temperatures will go up and so indeed is the humidity was not not just by day but also by night. At the moment, High Pressure is in charge in the south, keeping things settled. In between, we have the weather front producing rain, settled. In between, we have the weatherfront producing rain, but settled. In between, we have the weather front producing rain, but it is also the line of demarcation between the very warm weather and the hot weather, as indicated whether yellow is very warm and the hot is shown in amber. Today, though, we will still have quite a bit of cloud around and rain courtesy of this weather front and it is what we call a waving front so it is what we call a waving front so it wont be heading in one direction, it will literally be doing that. The rain coming in across scotland will fringe in across scotland will fringe in across Northern England and also north wales. For central and eastern areas, you are looking at drier and brighter conditions with a lot of sunshine. Gusty winds across the north and west, gusting a0 a5 mph. You can see in the white circles, these numbers indicate the average wind speeds. Temperature wise today, we are not in the very warm or even hot area yet. 17 in aberdeen, 18 in belfast, 23 or maybe 2a or 25 in london. Through this evening and overnight, our weather front is still with us. If anything, now it will push further north, taking its cloud and rain with it. Still a lot of cloud associated with it, under clear skies, further south and east, overnight lows of 12 or 1a or 15 as we per push further north so another one night. Then as we move from tuesday into wednesday, it is n we from tuesday into wednesday, it is we will still have our weather front, it will weaken but it will reduce rain in Northern Ireland was, scotland, and at times we will see that getting into North West Wales but it will be a lot and as you push further south, were back into the drier, sunnier and warmer conditions. Up to 27 or 28 degrees and as we go further north, aberdeen will be looking at about 20. Then for wednesday itself, we start off with this rain from the weather front but it will be a fairly weak affair as we front but it will be a fairly weak affairas we go front but it will be a fairly weak affair as we go through the day, not much than a band of cloud sunshine on either side and then we start to see the temperatures rise more widely, 25 in 16 in stornoway and 30 in london. Nice to see you this morning carol. See you in about half an hour. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. The town of reading will hold a minutes silence later this morning for the three people who died during a fatal stabbing attack in a park on saturday. The first victim has been named as local teacher james furlong. His has been described as inspirational by former pupils. Meanwhile, police are continuing to question suspect Khairi Saadallah who has been arrested under the terrorism act and was brought to the attention of m15 last year. Lets speak now to the security minister, James Brokenshire, whojoins us from south east london. Details are still emerging about what happened in that park in reading on saturday night, including real bravery from the police and also members of the public. Absolutely, and i want to pay tribute to the work of our emergency services, the police, all of those first responders, who dealt with this appalling evil and callous act. But also those members of the public as well who supported the police, bravely dealt with those issues on the ground and our thoughts, our hearts, go out to all of those this morning who have lost loved ones, who are morning or have been effected by this appalling incident. Just listening to this testimony overnight, it is heartbreaking. And it is important that we allow the police to follow through on their investigations. This is a very active and alive Ongoing Investigation that the police are leading and equally ensuring that they follow through, ensuring justice is done in relation to this appalling act. What do you say to people in reading who might be concerned for their own safety . What i would say is i think that people should be alert not alarmed. Those are the words of the head of counterterrorism policing yesterday, andi counterterrorism policing yesterday, and i think that theyre right. People must remain vigilant. 0ur terrorist threat level is at substantial. The third level which means an attack is likely. But we need to go about our lives. We need to be able to ensure that those who seek to intimidate, those who would seek to intimidate, those who would seek to intimidate, those who would seek to use terror to try and change our way of life, that they do not succeed. But we remain vigilant. The police and intelligence agencies continue to do their incredible work and therefore how we ensure that we can carry on, but being vigilant as to the risk that is there. Are you looking at that threat level . The threat level is carried out by an organisation called jtac, there is no indication in the change of threat level and obviously the police have indicated they are not looking for anyone else at the moment in terms of this particular. We must allow them to get on with their investigation. This is live, there, the searches that continue. It is absolutely right that they follow it through in that way and that we are able to secure justice in relation to this appalling crime. Let us talk a bit about the man, Khairi Saadallah. He was looked at by m15. | Khairi Saadallah. He was looked at by m15. I am restrained as to what i can actually say this morning was not because this is a lyle event live investigation and because we are expending a trial, i am unable to go into the detail of the individual and im going to have to allow the police to deal with any specific details as they emerge in order that we protect and ensure that this case is pursued appropriately. What i would say is that the police and Security Services obviously deal with thousands of leads that they have difficult challenges that they have in terms of prioritisation of resource, but i can assure that if there are lessons to be learned, if there are lessons to be learned, if there are lessons to be learned, if there are policies that need to be changed, if we need to do things differently, absolutely, that is what we would do and we will continue to challenge ourselves in terms of what further steps are required in order to ensure that this country remains a safe place, as it is, but recognising the important work of our world leading security and policing in this space. What can you tell me about reports that the suspect was recently released from prison for an offence that was minor, low level and not terror related. That was minor, low level and not terrorrelated. Unfortunately again, because of the Ongoing Police investigation and my desire not to compromise or in any way affect that, i am unable to comment on the specifics that some people are reporting in the newspapers and obviously some of the reports that the you have seen. 0bviously, obviously some of the reports that the you have seen. Obviously, we do ta ke the you have seen. Obviously, we do take every case incredibly seriously and there are specific lines that will be being pursued by police at the moment and i have got to let that take its course. As security minister as well, can you tell us what the greatest threat level is at the moment . Is it from so called loa n the moment . Is it from so called loan attacks . Threats obviously ma nifest loan attacks . Threats obviously manifest themselves in a number of different ways. 0ver manifest themselves in a number of different ways. Over the last three yea rs, different ways. Over the last three years, the police and Security Services have disrupted, prevented, 25 atte m pts services have disrupted, prevented, 25 attempts at terrorist attacks. We have seen this change in the shift between, with the growth of right wing terrorism as well as islamist related terrorism. We obviously do guard against what are called these loa n guard against what are called these loan actor, isolated individuals. Lone actor. We guard against all of these different types of risks and threats and as i say, it is, i think, important to note that the work that our police and security agencies have done to prevent attacks from actually occurring. But clearly, we must remain vigilant and this appalling incident has underlined just the profound impact that happens and obviously thinking very firmly about all of those affected this morning. We know there will be a one minutes silent as well, later today. Can we talk a little bit about what we have been talking about for the last few weeks. Lockdown, coronavirus. We are understanding the Prime Minister will make an announcement tomorrow which may include moving the two metres social distance to one metre. Is that going to happen . Well, the Prime Minister is going to make that statement tomorrow, louise. 0bviously, statement tomorrow, louise. Obviously, it is proceeding a report today which will be taken to cabinet tomorrow for approval and the update will be given there. 0bviously, there has been a great deal of work that has been taking place at pace over the last number of days. Informed by the science, informed by experience around the world as well, as to how we can appropriately look at easements and appropriately also reflect on the two metre rule as well. It is important in that context to recognise different settings outside, inside, the other measures that can be taken such as the wearing of Face Coverings or other protective barriers, and therefore, there is a lot in this and why i think it is important this is all brought together and obviously for the Prime Minister to announce that to set out those next steps when he speaks in parliament and updates the parliament then. As far as and updates the parliament then. As farasi and updates the parliament then. As far as i understand, the science has not changed, so why is government policy going to change . not changed, so why is government policy going to change . I think what you look at, louise, isjust the policy going to change . I think what you look at, louise, is just the way in which experience from around the world helps to inform, to ensure that as we understand the virus better, as we understand its meaning means better, as we understand its meaning means to transmission, that has involved over the last couple of weeks, and therefore to take the best, most up to date, science, medical experience as well as other experience from around the globe, to inform the next actions we take. It is without intent that the Prime Minister obviously receives this advice, sees that input from the scientist, our expert scientific group, and therefore, we avoid that second spike, we avoid undoing all of the sacrifice, all of this the ha rd of the sacrifice, all of this the hard work that has gone in over the last couple of weeks, to look at ways we can make appropriate easements but where they wont have the impact of seeing the second occurrence of this appalling virus. Given what you have said, we know today thats the r number in germany has gone up. How concerned are you in seeing that . Obviously it is concerning to see the situation in germany and that is why we are informed in our actions by experience from around the world. Why the chief scientific officer, the chief medical officer, speaking to their counterparts in different parts of the world, to ensure that we are applying the best learning, the best experience, and informing our next steps. It is with that sense of rigour that we are approaching this next phase and looking at the report that we receive, to inform what we can do, appropriately, safely, recognising of course the impacts on society, on our economy, as a result of the current restrictions, but what other steps, what the broader context is, to see that we can do this safely and appropriately. What does it mean when the government says if things change they will slam the brakes on . I think what thats saying is that we are very i think what thats saying is that we are very informed by this our rate of transmission r rate, this five stage alert level that we have put in place so what that means is if the situation changes, if we see there is an increase, the r number going up, the assessment level increasing, that that means we may need to stop, we may need to look at what measures may need to be reintroduced. Profoundly, that is what we want to avoid which is why this is being taken with such care and why the Prime Minister will look at the report that he receives in taking the next steps around this. Let us say that onjuly taking the next steps around this. Let us say that on july the fourth, and we dont know whether this will happen, pubs, hotels, restaurants, hairdressers, they all open, what are you going to do next . Crikey. Well i have had one of the home haircuts already so that will be nice to think that. Haircuts already so that will be nice to think that. Do you know what . We have run out of time thank you take care, thank you, louise. We are never going to know. Let us find out what is going on in sport. Good morning, sally. find out what is going on in sport. Good morning, sally. I love your persistence, though. Keep on trying. Good morning everybody, good morning, dan and lou. The wait goes on for liverpool. Their managerjurgen klopp says his team need to be ready for wednesdays match against Crystal Palace which could be the night they finally clinch a first ever premier league title. It could have been tonight had they won this merseyside derby. But that miss one of their best chances in the goalless draw. Everton went the closest, only that save and the post keeping the score at 0 0. So city play burnley later. If they lose, liverpool will win their first top flight trophy in 30 years with victory at anfield on wedensday. A lot of things we can do better. I saw in training today, it wasnt really there. It was a derby, we felt the derby even though the crowd was there, that is how it is with both show both teams showed that we really know what we are therefore but football should be a little bit morejoy than but football should be a little bit more joy than what both teams showed. Those derbies can be difficult to watch. Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has warned his team to be more clinical as they gave their hopes of a top four finish a boost. Despite dominating posession, they needed two goals in two minutes to come from behind and beat second bottom aston villa 2 1. Chelsea now five points clear of fifth placed man united, while villa are a point from safety. Newcastle are now 11 points clear of the bottom three, but manager steve bruce doesnt think his team are safe yet. £a0 million strikerjoelinton ending his six month wait for a league goal as they beat Sheffield United 3 0. And Lewis Hamilton says hes extremely positive that change will come in the battle against racial inequality. The six time formula one World Champion released these pictures of himself taking part in a black lives matter protest on sunday in london, and has been hugely vocal on the issue in recent weeks. He added on social media that he was so proud to see in person so many people of all races and backgrounds supporting this movement. Isnt it interesting, we are seeing sports people using their voice increasingly in recent times. Absolutely. Thank you very much. She will be speaking tojohn barnes a little bit later on, about 830, i think. Latest government figures show that since the Coronavirus Crisis began, more than £28 billion has been spent to protect workers and those who are self employed. Despite this huge figure, however, well over a Million People are still losing out. Sean has more. Good morning. Morning, everybody. I had lots of people getting in touch with me this morning since we started talking about this, freelancers, husband and wife direct is, who have had no income over recent months and somebody who received a shielding letter but felt they had to go into work because they had to go into work because they were not able to claim subsidies elsewhere. Those who have said we do not want loans or take on debt and we need grants to get through, it is affecting their Mental Health, a huge array of people who have not been able to tap into these Government Schemes that have been put in place by the chancellor. We know they are pretty big but mps are concerned and they have set at least 1 million big but mps are concerned and they have set at least1 Million People are not able to access the Campaign Groups put it either matt and we can look at some of those games now. The big one of course is the Job Retention scheme, those people who are furloughed and have had their wages subsidised by the government over recent months and with months to come as well, over 9 Million People tapping into that and businesses tapping into that and it is constantly £21 billion so far and there is also the self employment income support scheme, or self employed workers, launched after the fellow scheme, 2. 6 Million People accessing that one, £8 billion paid out there so far but the big problem is for those people that do not quite meet criteria one way or another, 1 Million People are locked out of the port as the Treasury Select Committee put it. Locked out of the port. Those array of people in a variety ofjobs that i mentioned but one of those is martin. He runs a falconery business in south devon. We started the business in 2001 and was doing very well and in 2015 we had a blip and i was diagnosed with lymphoma and i had to undergo treatment for that. Being self employed there was no support there for me at the time so i had to keep, trying to keep the business running while undergoing treatment which i have to say was very hard but we made it through that. The business started doing well for itself after that someone 2018 we invested everything we could into it, to improve even more on what we we re it, to improve even more on what we were doing. This meant after one year trading profit, trading income over that time was absolutely non existent in the balance. We were completely left out in the cold, no government support. No support for us in any which way through no fault of our own. We are at the stage in the next week or so that we will have to look at selling one or two of our more valuable birds to keep things going. Which we actually need for the business. But it is that or give up and put ourselves to the benefits of the state. From now until the end of september, we would normally be flat out with clients every day and we have nothing coming so we every day and we have nothing coming so we have had no income whatsoever since march, apart from a little bit we got three gofundme account. Our re nt we got three gofundme account. Our rent is still going on. We have ongoing costs that are the same. Everything i do costs as much to do whether i am in employed work, i mean, paid work or not. And we have slipped out of the net on this. The stress at the moment is horrendous. Lam stress at the moment is horrendous. I am checking my e mails all of the time to look for that one letter saying my loan has been approved and has come through. It has played havoc on our Mental Health and it is just now, it is a case of winter we decide we have to call it quits . Martin is one of those self employed treatment and self employed people and eve tells me she is on a short term paye contract and many people in the tv industry cannot be furloughed, cannot access the self employment scheme and were left with no help apart from universal credit and she says i earn from universal credit what i would have worked for three days work in a whole month but those receiving growth, 80 of subsidies, so the treasury has said they will continue to look at it and there are other support schemes out there are £a00 million given to local authorities to support the most vulnerable mortgage payment holidays, tax deferral, those kind of things but it does not mean it is an easy time for a lot of people who cannot access those of that is right now. Absolute concern that many people are going through. Sean, thank you. Good to see you. Lockdown has made lots of us experience a sense of loneliness in one way or another so much so that it inspired choirmaster Gareth Malone to start planning a virtual choir to help bring us closer together. The results have been filmed for a new bbc series, which gareth received more than 15,000 applications for in just a8 hours. Well be speaking to him injust a moment but first lets take a look. We will be going home malone. That is not yourjoke there is always another day. And well make it through. We will find our way. Ive never seen the world stop before. But they did it. We all pressed pause for you. To help you catch your breath. Oh come on it is the list that we could do. At least. It sounded great. There were some bits that were fantastic went there . And healthca re support worker hannah gingell, who you just saw in the programme. Are garethjoins us now, alongside choir member and healthca re support worker hannah gingell, who you just saw in the programme. Tells what you have been doing, it has been huge, hasnt it . A lot of work, i am amongst a small number of lucky people who have had something to do during lockdown and i think i needed it and i think people that i have been singing with has needed it as well, just to keep mind and soul together and at that moment you just saw, the reason i was excited is that sarah, she was making that up as she went along. And that was the first time i had heard her sing that little bit so that is why i was sleeping around with joy. 15,000 people responded, it is something that has kept you busy but it shows you the interest in Something Like this that you have so many people applying to be a part of it. Thats right, we actually, with the online choir that i have been running every night on youtube, we had 150,000 people sign up for that and regularly 20, 30, a0,000 people doing rehearsals during the peak of lockdown so it has been really important to people and i am not the only one, so many people are doing online versions of what they would ordinarily do in the real world. Hannah, tell us about being a part of all of this and being coached as well by gareth. What is that like . It isa well by gareth. What is that like . It is a real experience. I am so lucky to be able to be a part of something that is so positive and it isa something that is so positive and it is a lot in my life during what has beena hard is a lot in my life during what has been a hard time. To work with Gareth Malone has been an absolute privilege and has been so incredible. How has it, gareth was talking about having an impact on many people but how, you talked about some of the things you have been struggling with and i would imagine it has enabled you to start new friendships with people as well, hasnt it . Absolutely amazing in that sense as well. Obviously covid 19 has been really hard and we have seen a lot of emotional things and we are still seeing it now and i know a person and and we are still seeing it now and i knowa person and i am a and we are still seeing it now and i know a person and i am a person who uses music in my life or happy times and sad times and something to help me focus in my day has been amazing and it has been amazing to be friends with the other choir member, sarah. Gareth, what has it been like for you in lockdown . You talk about being lucky to work but have you found tough bits as well . Yeah, it has not been easy. Some of the things that have come up, we have been writing songs with everybody and that has been very emotional and im just stuck here in this box and i have nowhere to go and the community is about four metres down the garden so it has been a very, very intense time. But i think musicians, we like our own company but. I have had rather too much of it. Thank you for being honest anna, i know you have not seen honest anna, i know you have not seen the First Episode yet so you will be watching with the rest of us and if youre interested in watching, it starts tomorrow at nine oclock on bbc two hannah. Are you nervous about watching it go out or will you be watching it sort of i dont know virtually other people . am just going to watching it with my best friend. And face time my family afterwards or probably drawing. I am really nervous. I told youre come together because it has been a challenge but the team behind it has been amazing. I am excited to sing in it. Gareth, without letting you play the piano, i cannot let you go without playing the piano. Will you play it . Oh, this old thing . I actually dont have anything planned but it does work. This is the song that they wrote. Listen, you leave me here, i could be hours. Gareth, it is called the choir singing for britain. Having heard the introduction we gave you this morning, argue slightly annoyed you did not call it home malone . Quite frankly, yes. There is not really a big choir, it is much more intimate. It is me working with one or two people but we have been able to get them to sing in sync which has been them to sing in sync which has been the big, the biggest challenge for anyone in music is to get things together because there is this delay on the internet, as i am sure you know from speaking to people on zoom. Know from speaking to people on zoom. So it is not lots and lots of people, it is a bit different from things i have done previously. Hannah, you are a Software Support worker, nursing apprentice, how has this helped get through the last weeks and months for you . Really really helpful. Just having music to turn to, help when i needed it to get my feelings out and to do songwriting as well and to get my thoughts and feelings onto paper has beena thoughts and feelings onto paper has been a really good way to channel my feelings and my energy. It has helped my Mental Health during this time. Grateful for it. I helped my Mental Health during this time. Gratefulfor it. I am glad you have enjoyed it so much and gareth, thank you for your work and if you wa nt to thank you for your work and if you want to see the fruits of your labour is you can, the choir singing for britain, not called home malone, disappointingly, starting tomorrow at nine oclock on bbc two. Honestly, i love it, i have had enough of being on my own. Catching up enough of being on my own. Catching up with carol, the weather was gorgeous carol. Thank you both, good morning, good morning everybody. For some of us we were looking at lovely blue skies this morning but as you can see in the highlands, a bit more cloud around and that is because we have a weather front. Most of us this week are going to have increasing temperatures and also increasing temperatures and also increasing humidity. By the time we get a friday, some parts of the south east 33, but not everyone will hit 33 by any means. We have got low pressure to the west, High Pressure to the south, and in between this weather front which is to the south, and in between this weatherfront which is producing some cloud and also some rain. It will eventually become the demarcation between the hot weather in the south and the very warm weather in the north. You can see all the cloud and rain associated with it across the north of the country, gusty winds too. In the south, back into the sunshine. This afternoon, the far north of scotland could well see some sunshine but it will move further south, bumping back into the rain. Gusty winds, a0 or gusting 50 miles an hour in the north and west. Rain extending across Northern Ireland, splashes getting into north west england and north wales and you can see the cloud ahead of it. For the rest of england and wales, it will be sunny, high is up to 23 degrees in london, 19 in plymouth. Through this evening and overnight we still have the rain with us. The winds will ease. There will be clear skies, particularly further south. Temperature was, double figures so it will not be a cold night in prospect at all. For tomorrow, we still have this weather front with us, Still Producing some rain, the driest conditions will be in the south and here we will also have the highest temperatures. Headlines are next. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Our headlines today. A minutes silence will take place in reading this morning, to remember the three People Killed in fatal stabbings. 25 year old khairi saadullah, originally from libya, is still being questioned by police its understood he came to the attention of m15 last year. Moving away from the two metre rule in england the government will unveil more plans this week to restart the economy, including the reopening of pubs and hairdressers. Lockdown restrictions are being eased in wales today as non essential shops can reopen while in scotland Face Coverings come into effect on public transport. Liverpools hopes of celebrating their first ever premier league title are on hold, as they could only manage a goalless draw at everton with manager jurgen klopp admitting they came close to losing the merseyside derby. Its monday, june the 22nd. Our top story. A minutes silence will be held in reading this morning to remember the three People Killed in a stabbing in a park on saturday evening, which police are treating as a terror incident. The first victim has been named as 36 year old history teacherjames furlong. On sunday, the school released a statement, calling him. Former students have also paid tribute, including molly collins. He was, like, one of the best teachers theyve had, so passionate, enthusiastic, positive all the time. Detained at the scene, he was rearrested under section a1 of the terrorism act 2000. Mr saadallah was known to m15, but they decided he was not a genuine risk or immediate threat. The police and Security Services obviously deal with thousands of leads but they have difficult challenges that they have in terms of prioritisation of resource. But i can assure that if there are lessons to be learnt, if there are policies that need to be changed, if we need to do things differently, absolutely thatis to do things differently, absolutely that is what we will do. Reading has been left shocked by the events. At times like this, a Community Like reading will come together and support each other. It is a wonderful multicultural, diverse and supportive and Cohesive Community and people will find strength in each other but of course in their faith communities and the faith communities will gather together and gather around people. This morning at 10am the town will pause to remember those who didnt make it through the weekend. John mcmanus, bbc news. John mcmanus is live in reading now, outside the park. Good morning. In that report you talked about shock over the weekend andi talked about shock over the weekend and i imagine that it still felt this morning as people try to come to terms with what happened. this morning as people try to come to terms with what happened. I think as reading starts to wake up this morning, yes, there is a very real shock and also probably a lot of questions about why this happened in this town. Of course the terror attacks arent unknown in the uk u nfortu nately attacks arent unknown in the uk unfortunately but nobody really expects them to happen in their neighbourhood, yet that is exactly what did occur on saturday evening in the park behind me and what had been a very normal evening, a summer evening out with friends, to relax, have a chat, talk to people, which it suddenly turned into a very violent terror attack. The focus, the investigation of that attack now happening today with police are trying to find a motive, though they havent said it is a terror attack. Also some examination i suspect of what m15 knew about the suspect. He was on their radar at one point but they did not think he posed a credible attack. They took any investigation no further. I think there will be further examination of that. For the ordinary people of reading, i think this morning well all be about that one minutes silent at 10am for the three victims, the others who have been injured, it locally to our out of hospital. It also for the families of the bereaved, whose loved ones started what appeared to be a normal weekend but who are no longer with us. Thank you very much for that. The latest from reading this morning, where they will be coverage of that one minute of silence across the bbc. So many people will be wanting to know exactly what the Prime Minister says but we wont know until tomorrow. We will have to wait for the detail but we do know there are Big Decisions being made this week which will have a big impact on peoples lives in england. Firstly that to me to rule, as you say, we have all become so familiar with it. The indications are that will be reduced to one metre with some added guidance, possibly around the wearing of face masks in what situations. That in itself will have a big impact on retail, shops may be allowed to have more people in at any one time, schools may be allowed to have more pupils back at one time and then at the hospitality sector, of course, who have argued that for many businesses, having that to me to rule in place simply makes it impossible for them to reopen, may be coming on july impossible for them to reopen, may be coming onjuly four to a point where they can open up again in a limited capacity. The Prime Minister will consult with the cabinet tomorrow morning and announced in the house of commons exactly what these changes will be. So if you are in dire need of a haircut, then hairdressers may be opening. If you cannot wait to get back to the pub, they may well be open again in a limited capacity before long. But this is all coming with a warning because downing street are saying they will not hesitate to put the brakes on if it looks like the number of coronavirus cases is increasing and that the more the restrictions are loosened, the closer people should follow the rules. What that tells you is that while these measures way the macro may well be welcome, these steps are not being taken without a certain amount of risk. Thank you. Brazil has become the second country, after the us, to register more than 50,000 deaths from coronavirus. According to the countrys ministry of health, 6a1 people died in the past 2a hours. The news comes just days after the country also reached a million cases of covid 19. A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after three pedestrians believed to be related were killed in cumbria. The incident happened in dalton in furness at 2. 30 yesterday afternoon. Police said the driver has been arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving, and three counts of causing death by dangerous driving. A Senior Police officer has said that a risk of public disorder prevented police in manchester from breaking up a lockdown street party, where two men died as a result of gunshot wounds. The victims aged 21 and 36 were attacked in the moss side area of the city in the early hours of yesterday morning. You are right up to date with all the latest news. You are watching breakfast and it is 8 09am. Tributes are being paid to the 36 year old teacher james furlong, who has been named the first victim of the fatal stabbing attack that took place in a park in the town centre on saturday evening. And former pupils paid their respects to their teachers over social media, saying. Lets speak to richard lamey, from St Pauls Church in wokingham, which will be open for people to remember mr furlong this morning. Good morning. Thank you for being with us this morning on bbc macro brea kfast. With us this morning on bbc macro breakfast. We have heard a lot about how this has affected people in reading. Give us an idea of what the reaction has been from the people you have spoken to and seen over the past 2a hour is also. You have spoken to and seen over the past 24hour is also. I think it is just a matter of thing is beginning to settle, feel real this morning. A community which is saddened, shocked, deeply plunged into mourning. Often these things happen a long way away so it feels a real shock and sadness that this is affecting the School Community and james friends and families. You will open the doors of saint pauls this morning. We are hearing the tributes being paid to james, a teacher who had a big impact at the school. What comfort are you able to bring at a time like this . We are working as closely with the school as we can because we are part of the schools whole plan to try to support staff and pupils. Councillors are in school today for as long as they are needed. Wokingham church this morning from nine untilfour wokingham church this morning from nine until four and people will be able to come in, observing social distancing and all those rules we need to observe but the idea is people can come in, sit, be still, they can feel themselves helped by god and feel themselves together with other people who are feeling the same things. There is the opportunity to light a candle and also a memory book we are working on which the school is a leading and we will invite people to fill pages of that and that will be put into a memory book later on. It is a chance to find some space, stillness and let god do his work and let the Community Support you. let god do his work and let the Community Support you. I know you knew of james furlong but didnt necessarily know him. There is probably a couple of strands to this. Those individuals who will have spent time with him or maybe were taught by him and how they then respond to what has happened but also that wider issue for the community of how do you heal after going through Something Like this . Absolutely. The first thing to say is of course the thoughts and prayers of the School Community and the local community are entirely with his parents, his brother, partner, friends, the widerfamily. Those are the people at the centre of this. But beyond that there are people who worked with him closely for years. People he taught in a really intense way in the sixth form, he was there form tutor. We have heard some tributes offered and the excellent Statement Issued by the excellent Statement Issued by the school, as well. It is an outstanding skill. In terms of its results and Pastoral Care. It is a skill brilliantly led by two co ed teachers which puts Pastoral Care and kindness at its height. That sense of community, that sense of care, that sense of getting through this together i think is the real heart of how we are going to get through this. It is hard to see how at the moment but people are resilient, we will get through this together. We were talking to other guests this morning and it is a really Important Message because it is hard for some people this morning who will be waking up in reading, who will be waking up in reading, who will be hearing about this and thinking about themselves, about what that process is and where to go from here, but what that process is and where to go from here, but i suppose that is the message you want to get out this morning. Absolutely. People are in very different situations but there are so many very different situations but there are so many people affected by mr furlongs death. That sense of solidarity, support, just looking out for each other, taking time, taking things slowly, and just getting day by day three things, i think. Thank you very much for talking to us this morning. Really appreciate your time coming on the programme. Richard lamey, and they will be opening the doors of the church. There is also a minutes in silence at 10am. Lets get the very latest now on what we know about saturdays attack, and about the suspect in Police Custody who we now know came to the attention of m15 last year. Were joined by the bbcs security correspondent gordon corera. We spoke to James Brokenshire earlier and obviously this is an ongoing case. What more can you tell us . Khairi saadallah is originally from libya, he was living in reading, in the area, he is 25 years old. He was detained within minutes by the police of the attack taking place. He was, as you said, known to mi5. That place. He was, as you said, known to m15. That is because in lead came into their system last year suggesting he might want to travel overseas, perhaps for some reason linked to terrorism. That was looked at at m15 but was notjudged credible enough to put him under what formal investigations had him under surveillance. He was in a category of a0,000 people who they had looked at as it leads but not a smaller category of people under active investigation or some kind of surveillance. It was known to them but not necessarily under a deep investigation by m15. This will be a huge investigation. What will the priorities be right now . The priority right now is always to try to establish whether there is any other potential threat out there. So far, though, it looks from what the authorities and police are saying that this was someone who was acting alone. It is not someone who was pa rt alone. It is not someone who was part of a group where there may be others who may pose a risk. They have stressed they dont have any intelligence of any ongoing risks. That is the first, most important priority. After that, it is a question of trying to understand more about him. What were his exact motivations . Was he linked to any group, particular ideology . Whether Health Issues . What else could explain this . It will also involve going through his possessions, internet records and things like that and obviously the individual is also in custody and can be spoken to. There will be a lot of investigative work going on now, and looking back in the past to see and understand what happened, whether there was anything that was missed or could have been missed or seen it differently, to get a fuller picture of this individual. You have also been speaking to the met polices lucy dorsey about specifically terrorism. What have you been told . This was about ten days ago and a Senior Met Police officer, lucy dorsey, had actually said there was this concern that people havent been thinking about the terrorist threat and it had felt like it had gone away, partly because crowded places had gone away, and they are normally the target for these kind of individuals over the last few yea rs. We of individuals over the last few years. We just havent had them because of lockdown. There was this sense that as we were emerging from lock the fear was that the threat could return because she would have these crowded places returning and you would potentially have individuals with a pent up desire to do something, perhaps individuals who had spent more time online and been radicalised while at home. There was this warning about ten days ago that people should remember that there was this terrorist threat that there was this terrorist threat that remains although the threat level has not gone up, it is still at substantial rather than being taken up to the next level, which is a severe. Appreciate your time, thank you forjoining us. 8 17am. Monday morning. Face coverings will be mandatory on public transport in scotland from this morning, including all buses, trains, taxis and trams. Meanwhile, non essential shops reopen in wales. In a moment well catch up with our correspondent tomos morgan in cardiff, but first Alexandra Mackenzie is at Glasgow Central station for us. Good morning to you, and Face Coverings are now needed. Good morning. Yes, absolutely. It is not mandatory within the station but we are being advised and have been asked to wear a Face Covering within the station. It is a very different feel to a monday morning rush hour. Hardly anyone is here. The advice here in scotland is only to use public transport if absolutely necessary , public transport if absolutely necessary, and from today, yes, as you said, it is mandatory to wear a Face Covering on all forms of public transport. Ferries in the northern and Western Isles, trams in edinburgh and trains in glasgow and across the country. To tell us more, iamjoined by across the country. To tell us more, i am joined by Phil Campbell from scotrail. Good morning. Tell us, what is your advice to people as we come through the station this morning . Our advice to all the customers is to follow the rules. It is now mandatory to wear Face Coverings in stations and on trains. To help customers get used to the change, we are putting in a number of measures that will make it easier. For example, at our busy stations we are handing out facemasks. We also have hand sanitiser units across the station and lots of prompts and help to enable customers to navigate the changes that bit better. It is anyone over 85, and there are some exceptions were health conditions. How will you enforce this, or how can this be enforced . What is really critical is we see personal ownership. Since the start of the pandemic, we have seen that in high levels across the country. It is absolutely critical that customers, when they use the rail network, follow the rules, they wear a Face Covering, and take personal ownership to protect themselves, their fellow travellers, but also staff. Thank you very much. As we have seen, the barriers are set up to ensure social distancing. Also behind me, if you dont have a Face Covering, there are some limited supplies here. Once they run out they will not be any more so the advice is strongly that you bring your own Face Covering here today. And also there is a one way system set up to ensure safety and social distancing. People coming in, the green arrow over there, and people on the red arrow over there to come into the station. But the main message here in scotland today is that Face Coverings are mandatory on all forms of public transport. Thank you for bringing us up to date. That is the pitcher from scotland, glasgow. Lets get the latest now on the easing of restrictions in wales. Our correspondent tomos morgan is in cardiff now. Good morning. What is happening there this morning . How disappointing. In tv you normally need pictures and words. We have the pictures but no sound. Hopefully. We will go back to him later. Apologies for that. 8 21am. True love came late to sandra and allan. They were 5a when they married. And when the country went into lockdown, they had been planning a huge summer of celebration in spain for their 70th birthdays, just days apart. I can honestly say ive never loved anybody as much as i do sandra. Its. Shes just the love of my life. Never been so happy, and were still happy. And youve come so close to losing it all . Absolutely. Very much so. The scariest moments of our lives, wasnt it . Lives, absolutely. Spain fell by the wayside as they spent sandras birthday in isolation, and a week later, they both suddenly fell ill. Text messages between sandra and her daughter over the following day show how quickly they both deteriorated. Yeah, it was. It was heart wrenching. Hi, how are you both doing . The last couple of days we dont seem to know whats going on. We are just light headed, tired, dizzy, dont want any food or drink. Just dont know if its the virus or not. And i put, im sure its nothing to worry about. Just chill out and try not to do too much. Let me know if you need anything. Really cant do this anymore. I fainted again and allan has been hallucinating. We cant even walk about. We really need some help. Im getting dressed and coming around. Do you remember that moment . Yeah, absolutely. When she sent that to me on saturday, thats not my mum. My mum doesnt do things like that. Does that bring it all back . Yeah, it does. Yeah, i really cant do this any more. Im really serious. We need help. Their daughter dialled 999. They were taken to hospital in the same ambulance. They were both taken straight into icu. Their chances of survival were 50 50. A final text message read. Be strong, mum. You will get through this i know you will. We all love you very much. Keep that mask on. Just keep thinking that the mask is going to make you better. Both i love you so much and look forward to seeing you when you get better and get out of there. Love you loads and loads and loads. Hard. Hard to read it again, yeah, very difficult. You could see each other . We were next room. We could see each other through the blinds. You could see other fighting for your lives . Through the blinds with the masks and everything on. Yeah. I cried and cried and cried. It was awful. Ijust thought, im not going to make it. Did you . Im not going to get out of here. You are thinking you are going to lose everything. Both had completely different symptoms, both had been in isolation for six weeks when they fell ill, so neither really knew how they caught the virus. For two weeks, it was touch and go but slowly, they started to recover and by allans 70th birthday, they turned a corner. Then they said, weve got a surprise for you. Were gonna let you come and have. A meal together. A meal together. And then they brought this birthday cake in which was a caterpillar chocolate caterpillar cake. All sang happy birthday. And sang happy birthday. I think for me, it wasjust so special because when they brought the cake in for allan im gonna cry now hejust got, like, really, emotional but he was really laughing and smiling and it was the first time that id seen him for a long time just smiling. Applause. Two days before sandra was given the all clear to go home, allan was cheered off the ward. All of the doctors, nurses, everybody just lined up. Well done they walked me down the corridor and sat me on a chair at the end so that allan could be, like, wheeled past me. As soon as allan came up, we had a bit ofa hug, didnt we . A bit of a hug, yeah. You know, and i said, ill be home soon, hopefully. I cried. She cried, yeah. As usual, i cried it wasjust. Bye bye do you remember taking those vows, in sickness and in health . 0h, absolutely. Yeah. And you could never have dreamt. You couldnt write it. No, we couldnt, could we . No, you couldnt have made it up. We did actually say 70 is going to be our year. Were going to do this and do that. Covid came. Whoomp wiped it all out. 71 is going to be your year 71 itd better be 70. 5 if weve got any chance 70. 5, yeah now you do have the rest of your life to look forward to, what would you like to say to each other . Ijust love you very much and look forward to the rest of my life with you. Were so lucky to have found it so late on, we really, really are, arent we . Yeah. I think its a once in a lifetime. Count our blessings every day. Every day, we say, we are so, so lucky. That is lovely. Thats put a smile on yourface. That is lovely. Thats put a smile on your face. Thank you to them both for speaking to us. Good luck with that recovery. A few moments ago we were trying to get the latest on the easing of restrictions in wales. Our correspondent tomos morgan is in cardiff now. Morning again. We sorted those technical issues and i was trying to tell you that here on queen street, the main shopping street in the centre of cardiff, you might see these yellow markers to make sure there is a one way system on this street here to ensure social distancing. Also in the centre of cardiff, they have blocked off some of the streets from cars to widen the pedestrian area so that people can keep to that social distance and the shops here that eye opening, they have put measures into place. You have signs saying make sure they queue around the corner, safely. Some shops they say are not opening because the Welsh Government didnt give them enough time, they say, or at the Welsh Government said three weeks ago for shops to prepare. Nick, you have a queue outside your shot, jd. What restrictions and measures have you put into place . Lots of measures in place. We have a queueing system. Inside the store there is a hand sanitiser station at there is a hand sanitiser station at the entrance to the store. There are floor markings on the floor throughout the store to ensure people keep that to me to distance. How much of a burden or how much of a hassle has it been to put these restrictions in place . Was it difficult . Not too bad. We had that three week prepare to open feedback we have from the Welsh Government, that gave us an opportunity to get in and put the measures in place in ple nty of in and put the measures in place in plenty of time to get up and today. Do you expect a lot of people . We have had enquiries of the last two weeks, lots of people have been phoning and enquiring as to when we will be open again. Thank you very much. We can also see down this street with a deep cleaning team from the Council Making sure everything is as safe as possible for people to go shopping again. Other things that are changing, Outdoor Sports such as tennis, those are restarting. People of course cannot travel further than five miles in wales, as the stay local rule remains in place here. Im glad we were able to speak to you. Thank you very much. Talking of Outdoor Sports, if you are going out and about this week, carol can tell us, there is some serious temperatures on the way. Good morning. Good morning. Some high temperatures indeed stop particularly in the south east but all of us will see an increase in the temperatures we currently have a for some this morning, a beautiful start to the day. Looking at the sky here. Also a beautiful start in midlothian. Just wispy cloud around. As dan alluded to, the temperatures are rising this week as is the humidity. That is not necessarily good news for all of us. By night it will become increasingly difficult to sleep in that. For now, we have High Pressure to the south, low pressure to the west. In between we have a weather front. The weather front is waving, so taking it to rain with it, north and south, east and west, literally. Almost in situ. It is also the line of demarcation between the very one air this week and the hot air as we push further south. Some of us getting up to 29, 30, even 33 degrees, as we were saying. What we have today is this band of rain coming in from the west. It is a waving front. A lot of cloud associated with it. Sunny skies as we push further south. These white circles indicate the average wind, is a not particularly strong but gusty winds today across the north and west of scotland. Temperatures 1a in lerwick to 23, 2a or 25 temperatures 1a in lerwick to 23, 2a or25 in temperatures 1a in lerwick to 23, 2a or 25 in london. Through this evening and overnight we still have this waving front, pushing a bit further north, taking the cloud and rain with it. Some of the cloud and spots of rain getting into Northern England and also north wales through the night. Under clear skies further south, looking at overnight lows of 11 to 12. Liverpool 15 degrees as an overnight low. Tuesday into wednesday, we still have this weather front. It will continue to weaken, particularly so on wednesday, on tuesday it will still bring in some rain but by then the winds will have eased. There is the rain through Northern Ireland, scotland. At times the spot getting into Northern England and north wales and you can see the cloud just ahead of that. Generally speaking away from that as it pushes on with it will brighten up and we are looking at a fair bit of sunshine. 28 in london on tuesday, possibly a bit higher. 2a in newcastle, 16 in stornoway. Then we get to wednesday. We start off with our weather front, producing this strip of cloud and some spots of rain. On either side of it, there will be some sunshine around and for all of us you will notice that the temperatures are going to rise. We have 21 in aberdeen, 25 in newcastle, 30, possibly 31 in london. If you like it hot, you are in for a treat, but if you dont, this wont necessarily be good news by day or by night. Carol, thank you. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Its monday morning. Lets bring you up to date with the headlines. The town of reading will hold a minutes silence later this morning for the three people who died during a fatal stabbing attack in a park on saturday. The first victim has been named as local teacher james furlong. Police are continuing to question suspect Khairi Saadallah has been arrested under the terrorism act. He was brought to the attention of m15 last year. A further easing of the coronavirus lockdown in england will be discussed later, when the Prime Minister meets senior cabinet ministers and scientific advisers. It comes ahead of a major announcement tomorrow on the possible relaxation of the two metre social distancing rule, plus plans for reopening pubs, restaurants and hairdressers. Labour say theyll support moving to one metre under certain circumstances. Today marks 72 years since the empire windrush arrived at tilbury docks, carrying hundreds of people from jamaica who were invited to help rebuild britain after the second world war. It was only decades later that they, and thousands like them, discovered they werent regarded as british. Breakfasts Graham Satchell has been speaking to two of those affected. I dont consider this home as such any more. I have kids, i have children, i was worried, frightened. No disrespect, i am as british as you are, your friend over there, even the queen, borisjohnson. 0r anybody. I am equally as british, i may not be the same colour but thats totally irrelevant, totally irrelevant. Judy and vernon, two of the thousands of british people whose lives were turned upside down in the windrush scandal. Archive arrivals at heathrow, film the windrush saw the sort of migration from the caribbean, those on board coming to work in britain, to help rebuild after the second world war. Why have you come to england . To seek a job. What sort of job do you want . Any type, so long asi job do you want . Any type, so long as i get paid. The nationality act was passed, everyone who lived in the former commonwealth was confirmed as a british citizen, that stayed in place until 71, the people who arrived from the caribbean in that time are known as the Windrush Generation. Judy was eight years old when she left barbados in 1963, even asa when she left barbados in 1963, even as a small girl she remembers the call from britain for help. Really, you should come, the mother country needs you, everybody is being issued with british passports, even before we had the passport we were always come out to us, together, we saw ourselves as british. Vernon was six yea rs old ourselves as british. Vernon was six years old when he arrived in london from jamaica. My mother had a commonwealth passport. And i came over on commonwealth passport. And i came overon her commonwealth passport. And i came over on her passport. Which automatically made me a british subject. They both went to school here, grew up here, had jobs and families, in 201a everything changed. The conservative government introduced a so called hostile environment for illegal migrants, nationality checks had to be done before people could get housing, job, nhs treatment, both vernon and judy had never confirmed their british status, they never had to but all of a sudden they were caught in the system. I am still very angry, iwant in the system. I am still very angry, i want that to be known. I am enraged. And im still enraged. Why didnt you ask me that when i was working in health care, cleaning old people and all the rest of it, why didnt you ask me that when i was walking the streets, people were spitting at me, putting a ticket on their cars. That was the time you should have asked me. their cars. That was the time you should have asked me. I had no idea that someone sat down and planned to get rid of us, get rid of as many people as possible. Ijust got caught up in it, im sorry, im sorry, i am caught up in it, im sorry, im sorry, lam really caught up in it, im sorry, im sorry, i am really sorry. Caught up in it, im sorry, im sorry, lam really sorry. Id caught up in it, im sorry, im sorry, i am really sorry. Id love the united kingdom. When it became clear that elderly black british people were being detained and deported the government eventually apologised and introduced a compensation scheme. Today, the home secretary is announcing a new cross Party Secretary is announcing a new Cross Party Working Group two in its words right the wrongs of the windrush scandal. Vernon is get to have his bridges british citizenship confirmed, judy lost her job and is waiting compensation. Both had the same message for the government. Do unto others as you would like done unto yourself. If everybody was to live to those simple words, what a wonderful place we simple words, what a wonderful place we would live in. Wouldnt we . The lesson to be learned is to treat people fairly, especially the people that have enriched this country, that have enriched this country, that you have depended upon, with their labour, their sweat, their tea rs, their labour, their sweat, their tears, its as simple as that. That is the lesson, there is nothing hard about that. Treat others as you would want to be treated yourself, thatis would want to be treated yourself, that is the lesson. Thank you so much tojudy that is the lesson. Thank you so much to judy and that is the lesson. Thank you so much tojudy and vernon for speaking to us. Graham satchell reporting. Were joined now by the labour mp and shadowjustice secretary, david lammy. We appreciate your time this morning. We heard from that report there is a working group that has been set up the home secretary, do you think that could be instrumental in helping people like vernon and judy who had been through this scandal . The important thing was that there was an independent review into the scandal by Wendy Williams. It was delivered in march, it made 30 ha rd hitting recommendations it was delivered in march, it made 30 hard hitting recommendations and the important thing now is to implement that review. Many of your viewers will have heard so many reviews over the years but i think the whole country has been touched by what happened to the Windrush Generation. This is a working group, i welcome it but what i want to see is priti patel get on, dismantle hostile environment and implement the review of Wendy Williams with vigour. Theres still lots of people waiting for compensation, you mentioned priti she says the best way to make sure we reach those affected is by listening to them and hearing their voices, do you think thatis hearing their voices, do you think that is happening now . hearing their voices, do you think that is happening now . I think we need a little bit more than listening to them. Over 5000 people we re listening to them. Over 5000 people were affected, the home office has paid out 5 of claims and that totals £360,000. The idea that if you make someone totals £360,000. The idea that if you make someone destitute or you detained them, they are entitled only to £360,000 out of the many people that claim, i think most people that claim, i think most people will find that staggering. You cannot but be touched by sitting in limbo in the case of anthony brya nt in limbo in the case of Anthony Bryant and you had on your item, vernon, one of my constituents, a great boxer and im afraid this is a scandal that continues, we celebrate the contribution made by the Windrush Generation but im afraid this scandal has left a lasting stain on our country s history. think a few years ago you refer to it as think a few years ago you refer to itasa think a few years ago you refer to it as a day of national shame, talking about the lessons of windrush having not been learned but i wonder, in terms of what we have seen i wonder, in terms of what we have seenin i wonder, in terms of what we have seen in recent weeks, how important is education in all of this process . That we do remember our history, both those things that have gone well but things that we have done purely as well over the years . Its hugely important, that people understand our history. You know, in your item this morning, you talked about the call that went out. Done poorly. Its also right to remind your audience that those of us in the caribbean where there by virtue, our ancestors were taken from africa and taken over to the caribbean and they were enslaved people. Thats why we were british citizens, because we lost our culture, we lost our family ties, the african continent, for all of those reasons, the sensitivity in which the caribbean people that came to this country should have been handled, was not shown. Thats in pa rt handled, was not shown. Thats in part because we are afraid to discuss those very sensitive but delicate histories of those histories are true to people from the caribbean. They are real to people from the caribbean. And those people from the caribbean. And those people are still left destitute, its something that i say is our stain on our country s history. Something else i would like to talk to you about, you are aware Public Health england researchers have found people of bangladeshi heritage dying of covid 19 at twice the rate of white britons and also they were saying one other black asian and minority ethnic groups had between 10 and a 50 higher risk of death, what should be done and what cant be done to reduce that . Again, weve got the data, the evidence has been provided but ive got to tell you, there are a lot of black and minority ethnic people across england who are frightened, they are worried, fearful. What they want recommendations. The labour party has called for work risk assessments, particularly because so many of these people work on the front line in public services. There isa front line in public services. There is a lot of chat about vitamin d, weve had no official position from the government as to whether they should be taking vitamin d supplements and if so, how much. Theres a range of things that can be done but again, need urgent action because every day, very sadly, when we see those death figures, very proportion of them come from black or minority ethnic backgrounds. You felt that yourself and your own family. I think it was on the andrew marr programme, youve lost your uncle and a school is that right . I have lost an uncle, a classmate from Primary School who was a5. When he died. In the london borough of hackney. Right across black and minority ethnic people i think its becoming very difficult now not to know someone who has died, thats how its affected the community more broadly. The time now is to act to save lives. And absolutely, to protect the nhs because so many of our front line workers come from a black or minority ethnic background. Im sure youre aware of what happened in reading over the weekend, there is going to be a minutes silence at 10am today, the leader of the labour party talking about lessons being learned, along with the government, what we saw in redding, do you think and expect that it might involve some sort of change to the law . What might that look like in the coming weeks and months . Just two weeks ago i led for the opposition on the sentencing and terrorism bill to make sure we have the right measures to deal with very, very serious terrorists and they go away to prison for a considerable time and when they leave prison, they are on licence and we supported the government in that. This is a terrible, terrible thing that has happened in redding, my heart goes out to the family and friends, its appalling once again, to have seen the logic that took place in that city. But we will work with the government, we will do whatever is necessary to protect our citizens against this horrendous, horrendous threat. The shadowjustice secretary, david lammy, thank you for being with us this morning. Thank you so much. Its coming up to a quarter to nine. The fans might not be back but the football is some lucky people got into the stadium over the last few days. We will talk to one of them in a second. Liverpool are a small step closer to winning their first ever premier league title. Its after goalless draw at rivals everton. It means liverpool could win their first top flight title in 30 years on wednesday, but only if Manchester City lose at home to burnley tonight then they beat Crystal Palace at anfield in two days time. For more lets speak to liverpool legend john barnes. Good morning to you, hope you are well. What was that like for you to watch at goodison park last night . It was strange, obviously, not only having been a footballer, in and around clubs, ive been to watch friendly matches, behind closed door matches, its quite eerie. It had the feeling of a training game but its a premier league game and an important one, with the magnitude of the game it was strange to be there with an empty stadium because it did not have that feel, especially a merseyside derby, its about the passion of the crowd. It was a strange feeling. This is what we are going to have to put up with until we get back to whatever the new normal is going to be. It wasnt ideal, yes, iwas normal is going to be. It wasnt ideal, yes, i was glad football was back. Liverpool looked rusty, didnt i. Back. Liverpool looked rusty, didnt i, but everton looked really well organised. Of course they are going to be organised, under their manager carlo angela lottie, liverpool were controlled, they didnt create many chances, but it was always going to be difficult, we were talking about the fact that with no crowd, when everton play at home, the crowd drives them forward in the past, with the crowd behind the team, they drive forward in numbers and if you do that against liverpool on the counterattack, you will come undone which is what has happened in the past. Strange sort of way, when the crowd was in there, everton was not under pressure to attack liverpool, get numbers forward, they defended well, liverpool couldnt break them down, towards the end liverpool, everton down, towards the end liverpool, eve rto n got down, towards the end liverpool, everton got back into the game, they could have won it. They are always going to be well organised, effective. I noticed the commentary tea m effective. I noticed the Commentary Team before the match they went back toa team before the match they went back to a little bit of a wobble with liverpool before the season was paused and they suggested that might continue, but what do you think . How are liverpool going to get back to that telepathic style of play that we saw earlier in the season . Well, first of all, when there is a merseyside derby, form goes out of the window and the fact they havent played for three months meant they werent out of form and whoever was informed three months ago isnt in for now, this is a completely new season, if you like. The fact they may have had a wobble for two or three games doesnt carry over now, that was three months ago. What worked against them was the fact the way they played with the two fullbacks forming a relationship with some of the other players, there was no andy robinson, the attacking fluency of liverpool came from the fullbacks and white players, that was lost, we did not have that threat, the impetus, theyre running have that threat, the impetus, they re running the have that threat, the impetus, theyre running the young players. That had more to it than any hangover from the fact that we may have lost against watford in the game three months ago. We saw pictures of the team coming out from the portakabin, players arriving in their kit, showing test results as they went in, different circumstances. How important is it that any team playing now keep a cool perspective about whats going on . We heard the captain saying he was asked, will he be watching the Manchester City game playing tonight, that could be decisive for them and he was a little bit, im not sure, i dont know, you might, what would you have done . Would you have been watching every game to see how everybody else is playing . never did that when i played, no matter how tight it was. You have to ta ke matter how tight it was. You have to take care of yourself and as long as you do what you do you cannot control what the opposition does so everybody sitting around watching the burnley Manchester City match isnt going to help burnley beat them so i was never one for paying attention to what the opposition dead. Particularly at a time like this. With eight games to go, it could be a situation whereby yes, if Manchester City beat burnley, are we going to be nervous thinking we are not going to get one more point . Its a healthy situation for liverpool to be in, the pressure of seven or eight games, we dont need to panicjust seven or eight games, we dont need to panic just yet seven or eight games, we dont need to panicjust yet i dont know if you saw but on this programme over the last seven days we had some exclusive interviews with marcus ratchford, he spoke so eloquently about the campaign hes been running that caused a government u turn over Free School Meals in england over the Summer Holidays and you spoke passionately last night about Trent Alexander arnold and the work he doesin Alexander Arnold and the work he does in his community in liverpool. Do you feel now that sports people are finding their voice . Sports people have always had their voice but unfortunately their voice was not directed to where, in my opinion, it should have been directed and what trent and marcus do, is where it should be used, talking about people less fortunate than themselves, disenfranchised groups, the Mandela Foundation in retrospect is talking about healthy kids in an inner city and that is what marcus did but when you mention the word rice and black, a lot of people are talking about what that means, black people in the boardroom, at the highest levels of society but what those two are translating it into, they are talking about disenfranchised groups within the inner cities, in terms of jobs, education, housing, that is where it should be directed and you can see the impact they had in turning government policy over in three orfour turning government policy over in three or four days, black players, talking about holding up signs saying no racism in football, doing that for years and nothing has changed so black players now should have a voice and use it where it is necessary and urgent, and that is in the inner city areas. John, so lovely to talk to, liverpool legend john barnes but before i let you go, what date do you think liverpool will finish this deal and win the title . I dont expect burnley to beat Manchester City so i think even if we beat Crystal Palace we will probably have to go to the next game so as probably have to go to the next game so as to when it will be, i havent got a clue i love that, john, thank you so much. I dont like it when we hear people say they havent got a clue because at the moment, that is definitely the most honest answer back to you. John barnes wins t shirt of the day, very impressive. Location of the day, that was a great bookcase. Sally, thank you. Its 8 51am. In the last few minutes details have emerged of a second victim of saturdays attack in reading. Its understood 39 year old american man Joe Ritchie Bennett was friends with history teacherjames furlong, who was also killed in the attack. Mr Ritchie Bennett was originally from philadelphia and moved to england 15 years ago. Three people died in the attack and another person is still in hospital. His father Robert Ritchie has been speaking to american tv, he says the family is heartbroken, they have lost a brilliant and loving son, he said this was senseless, hed been working for a dutch Pharmaceutical Company in london. As luis said it was good friends with james furlong. There you go, the second person named, killed in that attack, at 39 year old american, joe richie bennett, we understand he was friends with a history teacherjames furlong, tributes being paid to james furlong, the school at which he worked, said he truly inspired our students, he worked, said he truly inspired ourstudents, determined he worked, said he truly inspired our students, determined they would develop a critical awareness of double issues. Some lovely tributes being paid by some of his students this morning, dont forget the minutes silence taking place at reading at 10am, coverage of that on the bbc for you. Its 8 53am. Eastenders was forced to shut down production earlier this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, and now theyve finally run out of episodes to show. But fans will still be able to get their walford fix via a new spin off series, secrets from the square, as well as through a replay of iconic episodes. Well speak to presenter Stacey Dooley and actor Kellie Bright who plays linda carter in the soap shortly. First lets take a look at stacey interviewing kellie with her on sceen husband, danny dyer. Coming to eastenders is a treat in itself. But imagine you havent been out for weeks. And then the first place you come is walford. Knocking about with us two. I know. Lockdown slick back. Whats going on . Lockdown slick back. I think you look lovely. You do look lovely. Youve grown some nice. Pecs . Moobs and youre wearing. Youve got in early, bryan and i respect it and you do, you look distinguished. Can i say, a little air ofjack nicholson. Thank you very much. Ill wear that. The later years or the young, sort of, sexy years . The later years. The later years, yeah. The young, sexy years. Thank you, thank you, young dooley. Kellie, how do you feel to be back in the square . Ifeel a little bit emotional. You know, i could sort of get my head around the distant working thing but ijust want to hug people. I want to hug him, i want to give him a squeeze and say, my gosh, you know, so good to see you and i find myself doing this a lot when i see people. That means a hug now. Like that. 0h yeah. I dont know if thats going to catch on presenter Stacey Dooley and actor Kellie Brightjoin us now. Weve all struggled during lockdown, you did not need to mention the moobs, that was unnecessary. you did not need to mention the moobs, that was unnecessary. I know, its just the way we are with each other but its meant with love. But he took it with a sense of humour. But how lovely to go and see eastenders, youve been a huge fan for such a long time. Yes, i was brought up on eastenders, really, so nostalgic. It was a treat, all at home, twiddling our thumbs and i got this cake and i was like, i would absolutely love to go and chat with the actors, it was really good fun. It must be so strange, we said in the introduction, everyone knew this time would come, tv has been shut down like so many other industries. Now eastenders have run out of episodes, youre trying to provide something for the fans desperate for a slice of walford. It was one of our producers called me in the middle of lockdown and said i had this idea for a show and we are going to go with it. And i was like, 0k. Going to go with it. And i was like, ok. But to be honest, it was lovely, it was going back to walford for me, its like going home. It was nice to go in, see a few familiar faces after only seeing my husband and children for weeks on end. Yes it was really lovely and i laughed a lot and it was lovely to see danny. And of course the lovely stacey, i had had a few swim calls with her during lockdown zoom calls. Kelly and kevin are really good friends, we have been back and forth, to see her in the flesh, yes, it was forth, to see her in the flesh, yes, itwas. Forth, to see her in the flesh, yes, it was when you said you had zoom it was when you said you had zoom conversations, you havent been involved in these quizzes, the bane of my life i cannot think of anything i would least rather do than sit down for, every time i get invited to a quiz, i know its from a good place, i cannot bear it, i would rather sit on the sofa with a cup of tea. But the problem is, we have been in lockdown for such a long time, you cannot give an excuse for not attending, you cannot say youre going out. Normally, i can say ive got work to do, i am out of the country. But they know i would be lying. I cannot believe it has come to this, eastenders has run out of episodes. When do you go back, what is it going to be like, when we we get back on screen . We go back very we get back on screen . We go back very soon, we get back on screen . We go back very soon, i can tell you that. We will be back filming towards the end of this month. Im really looking forward to it, i have seen the first few scripts now and they are really exciting. Its coming back with all the bells and whistles and everything the fans are going to wa nt everything the fans are going to want from the show. Its going to be really challenging, its going to be different filming. But im really grateful that we can actually do it and have a go because so many of my friends in this industry are just, their work has stopped and they have no idea when its going to start again because so much cannot start again because so much cannot start again so again because so much cannot start again so i think they are really lucky that we cant get the ball rolling. It will go back on air in the autumn, i know that and in the meantime, what i will say, if you areafan meantime, what i will say, if you are a fan of the show you will love this new show secrets from the square, nostalgic episodes, i am so excited about watching them. I cannot wait. Listen, so wonderful to see you both, thanks so much, weve run out of time stacey to talk about blow up, but thank you both. Make up artists, and people who cannot work. I will invite you to assume quiz later eastenders secrets from the square is on bbc one tonight at 8 oclock. And tomorrow at 7. 30 youll be able to see an iconic eastenders episode on bbc one. Thats all from breakfast for today, but well both be back tomorrow from six. Goodbye good morning, welcome to bbc news. Im victoria derbyshire, here are the headlines.
