On todays programme, by scientists are increasingly focused on tracking down the so called super spreaders of the virus. Why scientists. But first this week, gyms and bars reopened in several german towns and cities as the country continues to relax restrictions. Germany has gained International Recognition for the way its brought the coronavirus outbreak under control, but there are now fears it may be moving too quickly. The bbcs berlin correspondent jenny hill reports from dusseldorf. Its going to be a painful recovery. Dusseldorfs gyms open again as germany relaxes most of its corona restrictions. Im torn, britte tells us. I enjoy the new freedoms but at the same time, im a bit scared maybe it was too early. Germanys cautious approach, relaxing now. Angela merkel continues to warn repeatedly that this country is still in the early stages of the pandemic. On a day like this, its hard to believe it. Germany has brought its outbreak under control but there is now an intense public debate about what happens next. This country can still boast low infection rates but its early days. Yes, i think it is too soon just now, we are easing up too fast, we are easing up too much, so we risk a second wave and i dont really understand why this is done so quickly because still more than 80 of the population stand behind the federal agreements which we had some time ago. Small but voluble, a minority demanded Angela Merkel ease restrictions. So, more significantly, did regional leaders, like armin laschet, whos as a leading candidate to replace her when she steps down next year. Translation we have the Health Problems of the pandemic but theres other damage. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds who couldnt go to school, sick people who couldnt get treatment because the hospitals were reserved for covid. People in care homes got lonely. This is damage too, and its claimed lives. Nothing then to do with raising his political profile . Translation the measures we had to decide are so important, a matter of life or death. You couldnt act on a tactical basis. Katarina is not impressed. The relaxation has meant she has seen her family for the first time in weeks. I am very sceptical, very sceptical, she says. Its like tipping over a sack of potatoes. This country, praised worldwide for its initial success, feels rather fragile now. Its six months now since this virus first came to light, and scientists are learning more about it every day. So called super spreaders are of particular interest. The 10 of infected people who are responsible for 80 of all cases. The bbcs science correspondent, rebecca morrell, has more. An outbreak in a nightclub district in south korea. One man with covid 19 is linked to more than 150 new cases. Coronavirus clusters arent unusual. As few as 10 of people could cause 80 of all infections. This is how coronavirus spreads. If the virus is left unchecked, one person will infect three others, who will then pass it on to three more, and this keeps on repeating. But this is the average picture. In reality, some people wont pass the virus on at all, especially if theyre self isolating. Others, though, will spread it more widely, so one person could give the virus to 10 other people and a few of those could do the same. This is a super spreading event. Right now, this is the only way to sing together, but pre lockdown choirs saw several super spreading events. Bars and restaurants also had clusters, and gyms too. Its not just about close indoor contact. There were more clusters linked to zumba classes than there were to pilates, for example. So it might be not only the noise level in the settings, youre having to shout, expel more breath, that might cause transmission or you are engaged in an exercise that causes you to breathe more heavily and deeper, as opposed to more gentle breathing. With lockdown easing, were being encouraged to spend time outside, but whats the risk . Definitely being outdoors is less risk for transmission than being indoors. But if you spend a lot of time together in a group and sharing food, and if you dont maintain social distancing or hand hygiene, then there is still a risk of infections. Its crucial to know where super spreading is most likely to happen. Scientists say targeted restrictions will help to control the spread of covid 19. Finally, during this pandemic, doctors have had to deal with death more often than many are used to. And due to restrictions, they re often the last person to spend time with a terminally ill patient. The filmmaker paul miles spoke to five doctors who had to administer end of life care during the crisis. Once youve been told that someone is dead, myjob is to go out and confirm that death, checking for life signs, listening to their chest. After that, you might spend another 30 seconds just in there, i suppose, maybe saying goodbye to them in the weirdest way. Just acknowledging theyve gone, and then you pull this sheet over their head. It seems so incredible that what youre seeing is the culmination of someones whole life. The only things that unify us is that we are all born and we will all die. Death is not abnormal, it is perfectly normal. The best deaths, i guess, are those that are comfortable, peaceful. Even if someone is unconscious or confused, they may recognise a tone of voice, a perfume, the touch of a hand. Wejust quietly read him his favourite poem just at the moment when he died. His wife and his ex wife spent the night sat in the hospital room drinking a bottle of wine with him. It just seems a happy way to go. News archive this afternoon, the foreign secretary said the lockdown across the uk will remain in place for now. He said deaths are still rising and we havent yet reached a peak of the virus. Particularly in this area, the hospitals are full with covid patients. A colleague described to me having seen someone in the morning who walked through the door who had died by the afternoon. I would get called to look at one or two deaths whereas now it seems like theres often 10 people dying each night in hospital. Ive had to look after a few patients. They were actively dying, and they couldnt see the faces of anyone who was looking after them, including me. Youre sort of trying to smile with your eyes, and you try and like show them some emotion, a human side, to make them feel theyre not alone at the end of their life. There was one jamaican gentleman, we made the concession of allowing his elderly wife to come in and see him. As he was dying, she had to wear a mask, she had to wear an apron and gloves to see and touch her husband at the end of his life. I got called to see a patient in the middle of the night who was very unwell. As i came in, his mobile phone was ringing. Before really doing Everything Else than that, we got moved onto focusing and trying to optimise his oxygen. He passed away before the morning. I wondered afterwards if there was anything else we could have done to help him speak with his wife. We then had to make a blanket rule for all the family members not to even come into the intensive care department. People arent even able to come into the mortuary to be there with the body of their loved one because of Infection Control reasons and i think theres going to be a huge amount of Emotional Trauma that comes out of the back of covid because people havent been able to process the deaths of their loved one. Some of the staff are struggling coming in, and finding that their list of10, 15 patients, theres only two alive, for example, after literally one night. Theres a real issue in palliative medicine with emotional burnout, but were doing what we can to give people as comfortable and normal death as possible, but this a completely abnormal situation. Were learning as were going along. I do think in the uk, we are quite resistant talking about death. Potentially something that this awful pandemic will do is making people much more aware of their own mortality, and making it much more acceptable to be talking about. When we are scared, the first instinct is to turn your face away from what is scaring you. And i think its not a time to be doing that. I think it is a time to connect, converse, and just be clear about whats important. This too will end, and we will come through this. The weather this weekend looks very different from the last couple of weekends. It will get better on sunday, but today we have got someone unusually windy weather for this time of year, and some rain pushing its way south as well. Its saturday, june the 6th. Our top story. Protesters are being urged to stay away from mass demonstrations against racism this weekend over fears that they could increase the spread of coronavirus. Research suggests the infection rate has risen in the north west and south west of england. A number of events are planned across the uk following the death of george floyd in the United States. Jon donnison has the latest. Your silence is racism mass public protest while social distancing is a difficult ask. And after a week which has seen several uk demonstrations over the killing of george floyd in the us, the government here is asking people not to take to the streets this weekend. The reason that its vital that people stick to the rules this weekend is to protect themselves and their family from this horrific disease. So please, for the safety of your loved ones, do not attend large gatherings, including demonstrations, of more than six people. In the United States, the protests are on a scale not seen in decades. But there, too, there are concerns about what impact they might have on the spread of covid 19. Black lives matter here, some of those demonstrating have tried to keep two metres apart. But on twitter the home secretary, priti patel, also urged people not to attend, saying coronavirus remains a real threat. Last night the World Health Organization changed its advice on the wearing of face masks. In light of evolving evidence, who advises that governments should encourage the general public to wear masks where there is widespread transmission, and physical distancing is difficult, such as on public transport, in shops, or in other confined or crowded environments. In england, it will be compulsory to wearface masks on public transport from the 15th ofjune. The government hopes such measures will keep infection rates down, although some argue the advice has come too late. And the uk has passed another grim milestone, with more than 40,000 people having now died from covid 19. The number of new deaths in all settings confirmed yesterday was 357. And there are concerns about the r rate, the number of people each infected person passes the virus onto. One computer model shows that in most areas of england to be just below the key figure of 1. 0, except in the north west and south west, where it is estimated to be right on 1. 0. A different study says scotland, wales and Northern Ireland are on 0. 8. All right, then, off we go. So as children return to school in many parts of the country, the infection rate remains on a knife edge. Too much so for Tameside Council in Greater Manchester, which is now strongly advising its schools not to reopen on monday. Our Political Correspondent helen cattjoins us now from our london newsroom. Weve just heard how the rate of infection, also known as the r number, could vary across the uk. What does this mean for easing lockdown restrictions further . Well, the reason why politicians have been so focused on keeping it below 1. 0 is that once it is below 1. 0, the virus is in decline. Once it is above1. 0, 1. 0, the virus is in decline. Once it is above 1. 0, that is when it begins to spread exponentially. You heard different scientists are now predicting that in different bits of the country, the r rate may be at different levels. But as you saw in that report byjon, nowhere does it seem to be significant below 1. 0. So when it comes to easing restrictions, that gives the government limited room for manoeuvring, because everything is still a risk when it is hovering around 1. 0. The other thing is that recently this idea of Regional Policy seems to have become much more important in the uks government plans as they move forward and try to ease lockdown restrictions, and certainly this idea that if there are flareups in the country we could be looking at localised lockdowns to try to crack down on those. In the United States, the nfl has responded to the anger about Police Brutality and racism, by saying players should be allowed to drop to one knee in protest during the National Anthem. The league had previously banned them from doing so, and President Trump had said protesting players should be fired. North america correspondent david willis reports. All that started with this man, back in 2016. San francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the National Anthem in protest at the Racial Injustice of the time. A single minded act that led to him being mocked by President Trump and ostracised by the league. Kaepernicks contract was not renewed, and he has not played professional football since. Four years on, the sentiments he expressed than have come into sharp relief following the death of george floyd, prompting kaepernicks former colleagues to join the growing chorus for change. How many times do we need to ask you to listen to your players . What will it take . For one of us to be murdered by Police Brutality . What if i was george floyd . If i was george floyd . Some of the leagues biggest names took part in this video calling on League Officials to reject racism, and admit they were wrong back then in preventing the players from protesting peacefully. President trump, who four years ago called on team owners to sack players who took the knee, has re entered the fray, taking to twitter to echo his previous refrain no kneeling. And while 75 of nfl players are black, the majority of team owners are white, many of them supporters of the president. The leagues commissioner would normally be expected to support mrtrump, but these are different times. Admitting they had made mistakes, he instead backed the players. Without black players, there would be no National Football league. And the protests around the country are emblematic of the centuries of silence, inequality and oppression of black players, coaches, fans and staff. We are listening, i am listening. From the inner cities to the corridors of one of the most popular sports in the land, the calls for change are echoing in every corner of american life. There isa is a day of protests and response of George Floyds death under way right now in sydney, australia, despite initially being bound by the local authorities. Authorities had ruled that the governing posed a Coronavirus Health risk, but in the last hour that decision was reversed. Lets go to sydney now and speak to our correspondent, shaimaa khalil. We can see the crowds who have turned out. Read more people come onto the streets after that legal decision and the protest could go ahead . Good morning. Since the initial decision from the Supreme Court has not really stopped thousands of protesters from taking to the streets, many have been adamant to come here even with the initial band. There was of course a big cheer and big happiness when that ban was lifted and was told it could go ahead. Really, thousands have gathered here, adamant that they are going to take to the streets, not just in they are going to take to the streets, notjust in solidarity with the black lives Matter Movement in the black lives Matter Movement in the United States after the killing of george floyd, but also to bring to the fore an issue that has long been ignored here, which is indigenous and black deaths in Police Custody. The Aboriginal Community has been using the momentum of what is happening in the United States, the global outrage, really, to bring to the fore this issue here. I have been speaking to many families saying that this is a very important issue and this has been a catalyst for them to come forward and speak up about it. We can see lots of people in the cloud wearing face masks, shaimaa. How much are they talking about coronavirus, or does the issue of black lives matter trump all about . Thats right, many of the organisers and protesters wanted to make that point after authorities had been telling them not to take to the streets, not to come to the protest because of covid 19 concerns, after australia has done so well. Many have actually been Wearing Masks. Organisers have been telling protesters to keep their distance, although that has been very difficult. Hand sanitiser has been going around, so the protesters have been saying, look, we hear you, we understand it is an issue, we understand it is an issue, we understand australia has done so well in controlling the virus and nobody wants a second spread, but it is important for us to come to the streets, and that is why you see so many people Wearing Masks on the street right now. Hes the veteran we first met here on breakfast a year ago today as we marked the 75th anniversary of d day, the allied invasion of nazi occupied france. He made such an impact on us, didnt he . You were there with him, wont you . It was unbelievable. Harry was meant to be in normandy this morning, with more than 70 other veterans, for the unveiling of a memorial to the british troops killed there, but coronavirus means the trip had to be cancelled. Instead, breakfasts tim muffet has been to catch up with harry and to present him with a special surprise. A remarkable 12 months for a remarkable man. A year ago, on the 75th anniversary of d day, Harry Billinge appeared on bbc breakfast. And dont say im a hero. Im no hero. I was lucky. I am here. All the heroes are down. The 94yearold d day veteran had raised huge sums for a memorial in normandy. His effo rts for a memorial in normandy. His efforts earned him an mbe in march, but the pandemics delayed the completion of the memorial and harry is at home. How have you been keeping . I have been a bit sad, and i have been here on my own since i got the middle on the third of march. The plan was for you and many other veterans to go to the memorial today, but obviously you cant do that, can you . Today, but obviously you cant do that, can you . I am there in my mind, so thats one thing about me, ive got a very good memory. We have got some images of the memorial, we can show you. Yes, you are very kind. The memorial is now due to be officially opened next year. When we filmed harry, he has often mentioned one man in particular, joseph needs. A mate of mine died in my arms, and he had a baby, he was called neades. What do you remember aboutjoseph neades . I think it was about five weeks after d day, and it was in this field, and this fella, neades, was quite close to me. When i heard he had a young baby, it really moved me to tears stop and he died in my arms and we said a prayer. And he held my hand. And i will never forget that. I know a lot of people died, but it is very personal because he was there with me, close. The baby boy he told you about is no longer a baby boy. He is 77. And the Normandy Memorial trust have been doing some to have work and we are delighted to say that that young boy, now i77 year old man, would like to to you. I would be pleased to talk to him i dont know where he lives. You can talk to him now, because he is going to be talking to you via the computer. Never thought i would have the pleasure of speaking to this boy. Very moving for me. This is the first time harry and allan had ever spoken to each other. Hello, alan. Hello, harry. It is lovely to meet you. I really cant believe that this is the opportunity to speak to someone who was actually there at the time when my father died. Well, i am very moved to speak to you, alan. So, which beach did you land on . landed on gold. I think yourfather landed on gold. I think yourfather landed on gold. I think yourfather landed on sword beach. We had both seen a lot of blokes die, but no one quite as close as your data. Quite close to me, he was. I held his hand. Isaid close to me, he was. I held his hand. I said a prayer with him. Yes. You understand how much. On that day when he died, 76 yea rs much. On that day when he died, 76 years ago, when that happened to him, and you can see it doesnt leave him and his passion for making sure people remember is so important. Hes been pivotal in so many people across the generations recognising how important that was and how grateful we should be for those men and women who served us so we have this world today, whatever you think about it, we have it because of them. Yeah. Hes a remarkable man. He really is. Thank you to harry and to allen, and that was a very, very special moment. As we mentioned earlier, the coronavirus outbreak means relatives and veterans are unable to travel to france mark the 76th anniversary of d day today. Harry cant take part either. Whats interesting is we talk about people like harry, who do so much to make sure this is marked and remembered. However, one normandy resident, ex pat steve oldrid, has been paying his respects on their behalf, hejoins us now from ranville war cemetery in normandy. Its a pleasure talking to you today. It must be very peculiar being there, especially with your experience, youve been in normandy for 30 years seeing how people have paid their respects. Those people will be grateful and im glad you got the names out, because its important these names are spoken out loud. We were listening to Harry Billinge talking about how important it is that all generations are aware of what happened and its importance. Exactly. Youve seen children infused and wanting to learn more . Exactly. A classic example this morning, an english family that lives in normandy asked if they could get involved, i said yes, and then the terrible virus happened, andi then the terrible virus happened, and i asked if they wanted to lay the wreath s. I never do that, im in the background doing bits and pieces for the mayors and this year im doing it on my own, and two children, 14 and nine, are going in and youve got bonus because my friend, a french piper is here, and were going to do our own ceremony in half an hour and hes just arrived so you got a bonus. Weve got two children, and my own children, and the grandchildren of the veterans are involved as well. So many people i know. Friends of the normandy veterans and grandchildren as well. Have a look the satellite picture, look at this world of cloud wrapping itself around an area of low pressure, and that will drift its way southwards through the north sea and take the wet and windy weather southwards as well. Very wet in the north west of scotland, heavier rain for Northern Ireland, moving southwards into Northern England, wales and the midlands at the moment and that band of rain will continue southwards. Behind it, well see sunshine coming in but showers, blustery showers, as well. In the afternoon, the rain isnt as extensive as it heads into southern england but it will be unusually windy, especially towards the south west. Those winds, 40 mph gusts or more, you can see the numbers and heavy and blustery showers for Eastern England, a cool and wet picture again for Northern Ireland and the north west of scotla nd ireland and the north west of scotland but southern and eastern scotla nd scotland but southern and eastern scotland should see the winds easing and the sunshine coming out and the central belt could see 18 or 19, thats the place to be certainly this afternoon despite the sunshine, only 14 or 15. The rain sitting in the north west of scotla nd sitting in the north west of scotland moves into Northern England by the end of the night, so wet weather here to start the day on sunday and those temperatures around eight or nine degrees. The weather should be improving on sunday, weve got this ridge of High Pressure trying to build in from the atlantic. That area of low pressure still bringing some rain and we still bringing some rain and we still got a northerly wind as well but it probably wont be as strong as today. Wet weather in eastern parts of england, heading perhaps into the midlands, becoming light and patchy in the afternoon and the showers in scotland are becoming fewer and for many places, brightening up and well get sunshine as well and a better day in southern parts of england with 19 or 20. Into the beginning of next week, we see a little area of High Pressure trying to build in. This weather front will bring rain into the north west but for the start of the north west but for the start of the week, most places will be dry with a little bit of sunshine. Were talking about it raising in the south west and north west of england. What should people in those make about . The relative rate in the south west of england has consistently been the lowest rate in the country, whereas why we have the highest rate in the uk and wales, in the north east we have had the highest rate in england and the northwest has had the second highest rate. Basically, what it means is that if the r rate is above 1. 0, the number of people who are affected is rising, and therefore that means it is gradually or rapidly becoming more dangerous. I think we all expected, u nfortu nately, think we all expected, unfortunately, the r rate will go up in the south west, not necessarily above one, but certainly, if we see all those horrendous pictures of people crowding together on beaches standing very close to each other, not socially distancing, in order to get out of the hot weather. I think we worried that this was going to be an issue. The north west is a little bit more of a puzzle, of course there are some very Beautiful Spots in the north west, but i think it is a little bit more of a puzzle as to why it has increased. What it means is, it is a reminder to all of us that we are balanced on a knife edge, we could end up having ever rising numbers. We gradually got used to those numbers of deaths that we hear about every gradually falling with those little lips which relates to reporting, and the fact that of course there have been Bank Holidays or weekends in the reports might be delayed. Little blips. But weve got to remember that if we wa nt but weve got to remember that if we want that to continue to go down we have to keep our distance. It is ha rd to have to keep our distance. I do understand priti patel saying there is a pandemic still, we are balanced on a knife edge, please think carefully before you go out in protest, but i think well have to understand that people feel unbelievably strongly this and in the United States in particular, there has been a momentum which has come to the fore. But i would say to people who are thinking of going out and protesting, please keep your distance. Coronavirus is no respecter of the good cause from which you are going out. If you are going out onto a beach because you are an idiot and you see that there are an idiot and you see that there are thousands of other people there and you cannot socially distance, but you just fancy lying down on your square six inches of sound, you are your square six inches of sound, you a re u nfortu nately your square six inches of sound, you are unfortunately no more likely to get it then if you are a protester going out for the best reason in the world. Two really good chances and im very hopeful, but these races are very hard to win. It is like a Champions League final or a formula 1 big race. It is really hard. Then i tried these by edifier, a third of the price, and they are lighter so they did out a little bit less, but the battery life was so fantastic that i was almost forgiving of that as long as they didnt fall down a drain, because obviously that would be a problem. But with all the falling out of my ears maybe i actually have something strange going on with my ears. Do you think funny ears is a thing . It is a thing, i have been told i have tiny ear canals so i have a real problem with in ear headphones. Whenever i wear them they keep self ejecting, so it is a thing trust me. So thats 100 of us with the problem, so i think these are the solution. The bose frames play sound out of small speakers and theyve got a microphone in them, so youre all sorted. The only thing is theyre not the most flattering sunglasses, but they work well for running. They look absolutely fine. Talking about running and sport in general, we have seen the return of some sport now behind closed doors. One spot that is still officially off at the moment is motor racing, although they have found a really interesting way to kind of keep going. Now, omar mehtab has been for a drive, but he has also discovered that with new techn comes new opportunities for cheating. With esports more popular than ever we are seeing that the raw emotion, big money and intense competition that make real life sport so compelling are also at its core. Butjust like in any regular sport, cheating is an inevitability. I am questioning if it was really daniel in the car. Like many sports, formula e, the all electric racing series, decided to suspend all of their races after the pandemic yet. But while the season was postponed, drivers were still wearing to go. So formula e decided to continue in spite of the pandemic virtually. So its real life professional drivers would enter the gaming world to race against each other in an esports competition, the race at home challenge. All drivers compete from their own homes assuming a gaming simulator called rfactor 2. But this setup take things further than using a normal gaming controller. Oliver rowland is a formula e driver for nissan and has this huge rig in his home. It includes professional steering wheel, pedals and a seat that reacts to the stimulation. But could this ever matchup to the feeling of a real racecar . Ive been spending probably six, seven hours on the simulator a day, so you get pretty tired. You tend to get worse towards the end of the days. I think the general feeling is the graphics, the tracks, everythings actually very close. Of course you dont get the cues or the feeling of the car, so you rely more on visual things, which takes you a bit longer to get used to, but i think i am actually extremely impressed with what weve been sent. Its notjust professional races who get to take part. On the weekend, there is a separate racejust for gamers, and the winner gets to drive around the track in a real live formula e gen2 car. Now, if you want to take part in the race on the weekend, you first have to set a really, really good lap time in order to qualify. So im going to give it a go. And theyve sent me one of these to try it in its very easy to lose control, or even have the wheel whack on your knuckles if you lose your grip. Its not moving properly. I broke how did i break a fake car . But after several tries, i set a pretty decent time, or so i thought i came dead last which isnt surprising, as these gamers are the real deal. They spend an hour after hour training and intensely studying the mechanics, not only of a car but the game itself too. But the race at home challenge didnt generate the positive feeling formula e and its sponsors would have hoped for. And it may be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Recently, audi sports real life formula e driver daniel abt was found to have cheated during a race. In fact, he didnt race at all. Managing to obscure his face on the video feed, it was actually pro gamer Lorenz Hoerzing who was behind the wheel. Other drivers immediately voiced their suspicions after dabt, not true to form, had done well. To be honest, im questioning if it was really daniel in the car. Formula e launched an investigation, and by cross referencing ip address, found that abt was not behind the wheel. Audi took no time in sucking abt, who was also disqualified in that race by formula e. And the gamer, hoerzing, banned from ever entering a formula e event again. But why did they do it . So from this it is clear that abt didnt take the esports race as seriously as a real life one. Now, we reached out to formula e who declined to make a statement on abts cheating and how they will address the strategy to prevent it happening again in future. But just think about this for a second cheating or not, i gamerjust came third in a race with highly trained professional drivers. People are starting to understand that theres a big difference between a casual gamer and a professional seem racer. The speed that these guys managed to extract from the cars over a lap just shows how dedicated they are to the sport. Thats bound to be some kind of Transferable Skills that in the real world. So could this be a new way of identifying talent . I guess a typical motorsport person might say, well, you know, can they do it if you put them in a car . Thats what were going to put to test this initiative. I think at the end when you have that prize, perhaps we can provide a pathway into a Real Motorsport career. That was really interesting, and the thing that i love was that the driver was just wearing socks, like many of us working from home. Throughout the pandemic so far, weve been trying to show our carers that we care, with total applause if nothing else, but recently i met up with a friend of the show whos been going a little bit further. If you were in brighton over the last few weeks, you might have seen this so i thought, wouldnt it be fun to actually set up some of my lasers on the roof terrace and see what i could hit with my lasers. And thats how megalomania starts Seb Lee Delisle is a professional laserist, and just to say before he showed his love for the nhs in this way, he did get permission from police and aviation authorities. And if he looks familiar, well, you might have seen him wowing us at click live 2018. Hes also created a dance show where the audience control the lasers using their mobile phones and the dancers improvise moves that follow the beams. And a lot of his work has been putting on laser shows for various cities during festivals. But restrictions on Mass Gatherings have thrown this years light festivals into doubt, and that gave seb his next crazy idea. And so i thought, can i make a lights show that would be fine whatever level of restrictions . So i put together this idea called laser light city i have to stop thinking of summer night city although i think ive got my theme tune written already. So its called laser light city, and the idea is i get the biggest lasers i can get hold of, probably at least 30 watts, and install them on iconic landmarks around the city, pointing up into the sky, but the fun part is ill give the residents in the city the opportunity to operate these lasers through their mobile phones. And you can go to my website and just with your finger, you can move these enormous beams around. Thats a light show that can work no matter what the restrictions are . You can see it from your window, from your garden, from your pathways. And in fact, seb hopes that these kind of light shows will one day replace a form of entertainment that he thinks has had its day. The reason that its vital that people stick to the rules this weekend is to protect themselves and their family from this horrific disease. So please, for the safety of your loved ones, do not attend large gatherings, including demonstrations, of more than six people. In the United States, the protests are on a scale not seen in decades. But there, too, there are concerns about what impact they might have on the spread of covid 19. Black lives matter here, some of those demonstrating have tried to keep two metres apart. But on twitter the home secretary, priti patel, also urged people not to attend, saying coronavirus remains a real threat. Last night the World Health Organization changed its advice on the wearing of face masks. In light of evolving evidence, who advises that governments should encourage the general public to wear masks where there is widespread transmission, and physical distancing is difficult, such as on public transport, in shops, or in other confined or crowded environments. In england, it will be compulsory to wearface masks on public transport from the 15th ofjune. The government hopes such measures will keep infection rates down, although some argue the advice has come too late. And the uk has passed another grim milestone, with more than 40,000 people having now died from covid 19. The number of new deaths in all settings confirmed yesterday was 357. And there are concerns about the r rate, the number of people each infected person passes the virus onto. The government has put a really big focus on that r rate. Same to say it could vary across the country. That tells us a couple of things. In the report, nowhere in the country does it seem to be a lot below one. When the government comes to weighing up those decisions between the benefits of starting to unlock the economy and give more freedoms, and with the risk, it means they might not have much room to manoeuvre. This idea of regional variation seems to have come more important in recent weeks as we come to the next phase of trying to unlock the country. Weve had this idea of having localised lockdown is to stop i breaks, and also stopping restrictions more slowly in some places are reimposing them when needed. This idea of regional differences may become stronger as we move into the next five. In the United States, the nfl has responded to the anger about Police Brutality and racism, by saying players should be allowed to drop to one knee in protest during the National Anthem. Joining us now is cynthia gentle, who is organising a black lives matter protest in edinburgh, and marvin rees is the mayor of bristol. Thank you both forjoining us. We have seen pictures in the last hour or so from sydney in australia, thousands of people protesting and some Wearing Masks, but very tightly crammed in together and people worrying about seeing that level of proximity. As an organiser of tomorrows event in edinburgh, how can you make it safe in the current climate. We have put all these considerations into place and we have actually changed the venue to fully ensure that people are social distancing. Weve moved it to a venue distancing. Weve moved it to a venue that can take close to 5000 people. We have measured out the area, and so we are confident that people are able to carry out the guidelines and we have made it clear on our events page. Weve invited people to come only if they have no symptoms of the coronavirus, and that they are fully protected, Wearing Masks and taking responsibility for their own health as well. As an organiser with the responsibility, that must be a worry for you. It is something that i have made a note of, but something im fully aware of is that racism itself isa fully aware of is that racism itself is a pandemic that has been minimised, and it has an adverse effect on the site of the temp three mac community. Its time to bring it to the fore, because the effects of racism are as serious as any other pandemic, and now is the time to focus and move forward as human beings and not minimise other peoples struggles. The Health Secretary said yesterday at the briefing that he was appalled by the death of george floyd, but the pandemic remains a real threat. In your position, you have heard what cynthia has said and the people around the world, about the anger and frustration of racism and violence, but there is a real problem here. There is a real threat to health. There is, but i would not wa nt to health. There is, but i would not want any dynamic to come out of this in to view where i was allying myself with matt hancock and up with cynthia. Not only do we get these overt acts of violence, but every day, people with black and brown skin have lower life expense since the, disproportionate representation in institutions. It has to change. My concern at the moment though is that cove rt my concern at the moment though is that covert is with us and we dont have a vaccine. It is not the demonstration i have a problem with, it is any demonstration that requires a gathering. It will lead to the loss of a lot of black and brown lives, and the consequence of any further lockdown, we know is disproportionately affecting black and people. This again will have a health quote consequence. How do you think people can protest in these physically restrictive times . There is no easy physically restrictive times . There is no easy answer physically restrictive times . There is no easy answer to that. Racism isntjust something is no easy answer to that. Racism isnt just something that you act. You dontjust have Boycott Movement and enact change. In bristol, we are encouraging people to take any, and i think that puts it in some ways an muhammad ali more territory actually. The people to take any, ta ke actually. The people to take any, take a picture themselves taking a knee, and done than sunday were asking people to tweet that picture of them taking a knee to the states. Donald trump not in is an of himself the beginning and end of racism. But at the moment he is the focal point of what embodies the system of racism. That is as good a target as any. This is only an initial act in many ways. The challenge of racism is going to go on for many many years. I is going to go on for many many years. Lam is going to go on for many many years. I am wary that we should not be frustrated if after the demonstration, we do not experience instantaneous change. Thats not the way racism is defeated. What do you think of the idea that marvin has had as an idea of taking the knee on your doorstep and taking a safely taking a selfie. Would that be a safer way of an protesting rather than the demonstration you have planned . Whilst this is happening in america, the focus should notjust be in america. There is racism here and in scotland, and people in edinburgh are willing to come out and protest against things that are happening here, with ourfriends and families. Yes, we support what happen it, other forms families. Yes, we support what happen it, otherforms of demonstration. We have victims of abuse coming to the protest, people who have been having trouble in institutions, and they are all racially affected. We have our own struggle to start working on here in scotland. I dont think anyone of reasonable man can object to what you are saying in terms of why people are upset and what needs to change. The fact of the matter is, though, there is a risk to health of people gather. We heard from marvin rhys saying that in this age of social media, you can campaign. We wouldnt know about George Floyds death if it was not for social media. Why can that not be enough in terms of keeping everyone safe physically. As organisers, we are keeping people safe. We are organising a safe space for people to protest. People are going to protest whether we turn up or not. We are trying to observe what the government has suggested, but we are not frog matching people out of their homes. People are coming out other desire to protest for what is right. We have had this minimised over and over and over again, and even with the pandemic were it is not going to go away. People are still going to speak and protest, and tomorrow is a safe space for them to do that. We are working with them to do that. We are working with the council and police, so everything is in place for a peaceful, static protest. People are not marching. People will have designated spots to observe and maintain social distancing throughout the protest. Well leave it there. Thank you very much for your time this morning. To the north of it, in many places we will see sunshine, but there will be some blustery showers as well. Across the afternoon it may be quite different across southern counties in england. As we look around as we look ahead into the beginning of next week, High Pressure has more of an influence. We see that moving down from the north west to bring some rain in here, but away from here, some city forecasts for you, it looks dry on monday into tuesday, temperatures and in normal and there will be some sunshine at times. When the lockdown started, around 2. 5 Million People across the uk were told they were at higher risk from the effects of covid 19 and that they should stay at home and shield themselves. In england, the government is currently advising people to shield until the end of the month but you can now go outdoors with people that you live with. Those living alone can spend Time Outdoors with one person from another household while maintaining social distancing. Those shielding in wales should do so until the middle of august but you can now go outside to exercise and meet people from another household. From monday, there are changes to the advice in Northern Ireland those that are shielding will be able to go outdoors with people they live with or one person from another household. Theres so far been no change to guidance in scotland, so people shielding there must stay at home until at least the 18th of june. Joining us now is gemma peters, chief executive at blood cancer uk. Good morning and thanks forjoining us. As we went through the differences between the nations there, it does flag up concerns about making sure the people are getting the right message and are clear about this. Thank you very much for going through it, because as you say it is quite a confusing picture for people shielding at the moment. There are too many people across the uk who have been shielding because they are can extremely vulnerable if they were to get the coronavirus. Those people have been asking for a really long time for clear advice about what other conditions in which they would be allowed to do more. What has happened, as you havejust described, is we have had a series of announcements from different parts of the United Kingdom giving slightly different advice and alter different timelines, and nobody has been clear about what the evidence is that what those decisions are based on. What were seeing is that hundred and 20,000 of those people who are shielding, there is increased anxiety about what the right thing to do is, and not really feeling confident about the support and advice they are getting is right for them. What support they need, and what support do they feel they are not getting . I think the first thing is about why they are in the shielding group and what are the circumstances and what will allow them to be released. It is difficult to put a date on because of all the reasons we understand about the complexity, and also all the risk to those 2 Million People, and their circumstances are different, but clarity on that is really important. Secondly, this has a massive impact on peoples Mental Health. Shielding isa on peoples Mental Health. Shielding is a really strict thing to follow. Up is a really strict thing to follow. Up until now, not leaving your house at all and isolating from members of your household, and that takes a big toll on people. The other thing is thousands and thousands of call to our support line and online forum, and people are concerned about whether they can act sex food and shopping deliveries, and also how they talk to their employers about whether they can go back to work, or whether they can go back to work, or whether their children can go back to school. In all of those areas, there has been uncertainty, and we have had promises that there will be a package of support for those people shielding, but we havent seen the detail of what that is yet, and we havent been involved in the development of that package, so there are lots of concerns around that. We speak to a gp on this Programme Every day. This is not meant to sound contrite or anything, but you could call your gp for advice, couldnt you . But you could call your gp for advice, couldnt you . You could, but if we take the shielding announcement from last week, gps and hospitals and charities like ours we re hospitals and charities like ours were taken hospitals and charities like ours were ta ken completely hospitals and charities like ours were taken completely off guard. We had not been involved in that announcement. When people called, we we re announcement. When people called, we were saying what we always say, it is really important that you talk to your own health care team, either your own health care team, either your hospital or your gp because they understand better your health circumstances. They were calling them and saying gps and hospitals we re them and saying gps and hospitals were saying im not sure why that has come out. That has added an extra layer to people. You are absolutely right, talking to your health care team, whoever you see regularly, people in that shielding group, is really, really important. Ifi group, is really, really important. If i take the Blood Cancer Community which is the one i know best, there are people in that community who should not be going out. People who have recently had stem cell transplants for instance. It is really important that you check, and i think that where the advice does not talk about the nuances and the difference in the balance of risks for individuals within that 2 million group, is going to let that group down. Its been a big week for thousands of children across england, as they returned to school for the First Time Since march. Lessons have been very different, of course, with strict social distancing rules in force in the classroom. Our education correspondent, Elaine Dunkley has been to visit pupils in leeds to see how theyre getting used to the changes. Im feeling very, very, r , very nervous about that this, but at the same time, im very, very, happy. It was completely my choice and ijust thought it would be better for me. It was mainly for my Mental Health and mental well being. Going back to school during a pandemic has given children a lot to think about. Getting germs, so thats always a worry at the back of my mind. There are new school rules and big changes ahead. I havent been wearing this in a while, havent been wearing my backpack in a while. So, its my first day back at school and it was kind of weird because there are only a couple of us. Were really spaced, so we cant sit together, you cant whisper in classes i wasnt seeing all my friends, i was seeing about eight of them, and id normally see, like, 30 people at once. We learned to wash our hands, then we came and back in and washed our hands again, so its quite a lot of washing. We probably wash about four times a day. Four or five. Everyone is kind of down. Its not as cheerful because normally our school is really happy and cheerful and we enjoy school, but i dont think anybody is really enjoying it as much because, like, my best friend, theyre not always here. Its been a cautious start back for primary schools in england. Many have stayed closed due to fears about coronavirus. Families have had so much to weigh up. For some, it wasnt the right decision for children to be back at school. For others, it was the right time. Its been a personal and, for many, difficult decision based on whats best for their kids. All schools in wales are due to open on 29thjune, and will be followed by schools in scotland and Northern Ireland in august. Ive just been to the school, as you can see im in my clothes. For these children, going back to school has felt like small steps to normality. Ive been learning a lot, seeing new teachers and just seeing the new normal way of the world. The test for the government is just how many more willjoin them. But i cant see my friends. It is when you see the lines on the pavements across the school gates where they have to stand, it is so different. Such a different world. More and more Small Businesses are applying for government grants to help them survive the coronavirus lockdown. Thousands have asked for help already. It comes as the government pledges a further £600 million to firms in england who had missed out on earlier schemes. Our business correspondennt emma simpson has more. Helena and simon are trying tojuggle childcare and saving their business. Selling coffee in this Office Building in bristol is a non starter right now. Theyre trying to boost online sales instead. They have got a loan, but are banking on a new cash grant as well. Like so many other businesses in the uk, our coffee shop has been forced to close, but also so many of our customers are in hospitality, cafes, universities, workplaces, that are all closed, so we lost 90 of our revenue overnight. The government has done a huge amount to help Small Businesses get through this crisis. This new fund is a top up designed to help businesses who have missed out on earlier cash grants, but demand could well outstrip supply. In bristol, the applications have been pouring in. We think there are 2,100 businesses that qualify for the new grant scheme. If we gave each of those £10,000, that would be roughly £21 million. Of course, weve been given 3. 5 to 4. 5 million. So you can see the gap, its huge. Youve got a trickyjob, then. Yeah, its very, very difficult. Its going to be very hard. And we will of course face the brunt of a lot of those businesses, who, were unable to support them because we just dont have the funding from government. Meaning helena and simon may not be on track for what they had hoped for. I found out that while we would have been eligible for a £25,000 grant under the original fund, had we paid rates directly, now well be lucky to receive £2,500. Its still a helping hand. The treasury says it keeps all schemes under review. For Small Businesses, every penny counts in these uncertain times. Emma simpson, bbc news. Some schools in parts of Greater Manchester are being strongly advised by local councils not to reopen its doors to more pupils on monday because of fears that the virus is still spreading at a high level in the region. Its after research from Public Health england and Cambridge University suggested the infection rate, also called the r number, has gone above one in the north west. In south west england, the number has reached one. But what does this mean . The r number reflects how many people you could infect with coronavirus. For example, if the r number went up to three, that would mean you could infect three people. Keeping the number below one helps reduce the spread. The governments scientific advisors believe that, across the uk, the infection rate remains at a safe level, though the data does have a lag of two to three weeks. Virologist dr chris smith joins us now from cambridge. It is good to see you again, chris. Some people have been asking, what data is taken to get the r number in a region, what is assessed . data is taken to get the r number in a region, what is assessed . A number of different teams are independently calculating these values. It is a mathematical model that is used, mathematical model that is used, mathematical equations that take into account various factors. They range from how many people are going to hospital, how many people are dying from this, what the movements in the general population are like. When they do the downing street press co nfe re nces when they do the downing street press conferences for example, one of the slides presented will be the analysis of people using public transport. There are a whole raft of different parameters that are factored into these models. Our hospitals factored in . Some areas have very big hospitals, are they factored in, or is itjust what happens in the community . All the data are integrated in this way, so if you go into hospital, that may have a waiting in the model. Add death in hospital or in the community may be considered in these models. Lots of different factors are taken into account. Different models will have different para meters models will have different parameters and they will come up with an estimate for r number. You mention cambridge and Public Health england, they are one of the models, one of the groups. There are others and together they will come up with and together they will come up with a value for the r number that takes into account the uncertainty and presents the r number is arranged. There is a limit to the so called resolution of how the information is collected. If a person has a case in one particular village, you would love that village with another village at the village next door because there is a limit to how fine grained you can make the analysis, because you get to a point where the uncertainty in the predictions is much greater than the resolution with which you can collect the information in the first place. Although you could try to look it up on a tiny level, it wouldnt be meaningful because the uncertainty in the weight is calculated is too great, so they have to lump areas together and say, broadly, we think this is the right numberfor this broadly, we think this is the right number for this part of the country. There is also this to or three week lag. In terms of people suddenly hearing that the region, their cou nty hearing that the region, their county is one of the highest, high reflective is that over two or three week period . It feels like things are changing quite quickly. In some cases, the data does involve looking at hospital admissions and deaths. The reason there is that like and there is because it takes time to ca ptu re there is because it takes time to capture the data in the first place and process it, but also remember, a person doesnt catch this coronavirus and died the next day. It may be two, three or longer in weeks before a person becomes extremely unwell, goes to hospital or even succumb state. There is an intrinsic lag to the way the disease behaves. At the same time, they try to ta ke behaves. At the same time, they try to take that into account because the other thing being considered is the other thing being considered is the trend. They always say in business that the trend is your friends. When you dont know precisely what is happening on a set of numbers, if you look at a train, because the uncertainties of the same every time you do the measurements, the uncertainties can cancel each other right and the trend is more productive. The lag is there, but then there are other factors that are not like that, so it can balance it all out. Chris, thank you so much. We have the north west r number, and what we wrote to the Prime Minister was that we need that at a far more granular level. We need to understand what is happening in our city region. For the Liverpool City Region, 1. 6 Million People, im certain that the data can be interrogated so that we can at least pull out what is happening in the area that i represent. Does that mean that this r number for the whole represent. Does that mean that this r numberfor the whole north represent. Does that mean that this r number for the whole North West Region is pretty meaningless for you, when it comes to knowing what to do for liverpool . Thats right. One of the real issues is if we have to ta ke one of the real issues is if we have to take local measures and the government has talked about local lockdown, if we did have to do that, we dont know where hotspots might exist in ourarea. We dont know where hotspots might exist in our area. That is why we are sent to the government to consult with us and to provide us with some decent information at least that we can then look towards to build whatever we need to do to address the worrying rates that we have in our city region at the moment. So take schools for example. You were planning to let schools go backin you were planning to let schools go back in part by the middle of this month, by the middle ofjune. Does this affect that . Tg delay that further, or can you not make a decision like that yet . We cant, because we havent got the data to the level that we need, to extrapolate it. We know we have an increase in infection rate, we know we are higher than average mortality rates. We have 7500 people who are classed as clinically vulnerable. Cardiovascular disease was pretty problems are higher here. All of those Health Implications need to be considered on the advice given. That is why simply sang at a National Level this is what we are going to do to ease lockdown doesnt really help in areas where you might well see huge optics and increases in coronavirus transmission. From what chris said a few moments ago, it sounds like at the moment the data just isnt there, it is not as sophisticated or established enough to be able to give even a city break down. Until you get that, what do you do . That is part of the problem, we need to test and trace, we needed that to be at a meaningful level so that to be at a meaningful level so that we can start to address some of these concerns, and it is not. It is going to take some time. We still could do with at least under what is happening in our localities, and they can take to the sub regional level. We might not be able to go down to a district level, but we need to understand what we need to do and the advice that we need give, which could be different than the national advice. Probably the best of the weather and southern parts of england and south wales will be this morning, because look what is heading our way. This area of cloud is spiralling around a low pressure, and it has already brought some rain. There has been a lot of rain in the north west of scotla nd lot of rain in the north west of scotland and very windy in Northern Ireland. This wet and windy band is moving southwards, heading across the midlands and east anglia and then down into southern england by then down into southern england by the time we get towards lunchtime. Behind it, many places will get sunshine, but there will also be showers which could be heavy and thundery. Into this afternoon, more patchy rain affecting southern england and south wales. It will be windy, as well. Blustery, heavy, perhaps thundery showers in the south of england. Showery, cool and wet in Northern Ireland and scotland. The sunshine will come through in the very north of scotland. With some sunshine, doctor showers, temperatures will be around 14 or 15. It will feel full in the wind, which will ease overnight. The rain in the north west of scotland will move its way down across england. Temperatures will slip away to eight or 9 degrees by sunday morning. The weather may improve a little bit in the second half of the weekend with High Pressure forming out to the west. We still have that northerly wind, but probably not quite as strong as it is today. There will be some rain in the morning across Northern England, driving down into the midlands. Through the afternoon that will become like them patchy for many of us, it will brighten up a bit through the day with sunshine coming through. In southern england and south wales it will be dry and temperatures here could hit 20 degrees. For many of us, the weather will improve for the second half of the weekend, but on the whole, cool we can come unusually windy for this time of yearand we can come unusually windy for this time of year and there will be some rain around. The ridge of High Pressure will be more dominant on monday and tuesday, pushing down into the uk, sets a run for a little while, then get squeezed by this weather front to bring some outbreaks of rain later on tuesday. Ahead of that, the uk should be dry, the winds will be a bit lighter and those temperatures near normal for this time of year. We will not see those temperatures getting back up to the heat we have seen over the last couple of weeks. There are some brilliant inspirational stories in these times. Harry has inspired so many people to remember the d day landings. We had captain tom, sir tom, during that brilliant walking. He has inspired so many young people. Including this young boy. Were going to introduce you now to a remarkable young boy. His name is tony and when he was a newborn baby he had to have his legs amputated in order to save his life. Now, aged five, hes set himself a challenge to walk 10 kilometers in a month, with the help of prosthetics and crutches, to raise money for the hospital that treated him. Leanne lawless went to meet him. When tony hudgell was five weeks old, doctors werent sure if he would survive, let alone walk again. But now, using his new prosthetic legs and crutches, hes determined to walk ten kilometres to raise money for the people who saved his life. We want to raise money, £500. Isnt that right, mum . Who are those doctors and nurses, what did they do for you . They helped me keep going alive. Tony had to have both his legs amputated when he was a baby after suffering horrific abuse from his parents, who are now serving ten years in prison. But living with his new family, tony is thriving, and when he saw captain tom moore raising money for the nhs, he was inspired to take on a challenge himself. He saw captain tom, walking in the garden with his frame, and tony had a frame like that to start off with, and he said, oh, i could do that but our gardens a building site at the moment, so it was like, we cant do that, but ok. And then we decided to sort of set this challenge and raise some money for the evelina, that saved his life. What do they feel like to walk with . Oh, really good crutches, really good legs. It feels quite hurty. It may hurt a little, but with the help of his supporters, tony is on track to finish his 10k at the end ofjune. Applause. Why did you make me do all this stuff laughter. Tony, i dont know if you notice, but on your fundraising page and set a £500, you have raised £559, plus £22,000 that is massive. Put your hands in the air and cheer. That is a brilliant achievement. Tony, what does it mean when people are so supportive, how does it make you feel . Does it make you feel good that everybody is behind you . Yeah. It is lovely, isnt it . Yeah. Mark, how strong is that son of yours . Incredibly strong. He just keeps going. When we got him they said that he probably wouldnt be able to set up, to walk, but he just kept going and going and has gone from strength to strength. The hospital you are raising money for, tell us about it. We still travel there regularly. He has a great team behind him there that have literally just seen him grow and flourish and do so well. They have become friends now. They are like our second home. They are right behind him, encouraging him. The doctors, the nurses, everybody down to the support staff at the hospital, they are all incredible. The staff are fantastic, but at the end of the day, tony is a five year old boy and they do have mischievous sides to them. Give me a little insight into his relationship, because you always hear these funny things that children do with the nurses and doctors, and the way they engage. When he had his first leg amputated, he was back in his wheelchair less than two days after the operation, wheeling himself around, then he just kept going around and smacking the nurses on the bottom it showed his true character. He was carrying on as if nothing had happened. What a time for that to freeze i reckon. It will get better on sunday, but today, some unusually windy weather for the time of year, and some rain pushing its way southwards as well. Its saturdayjune the 6th. Our top story. Protestors are being urged to stay away from mass demonstrations against racism this weekend, over fears that they could increase the spread of coronavirus. Research suggests the infection rate has risen in the north west and south west of england. A number of events are planned across the uk following the death of george floyd in the United States. Jon donnison has the latest. Your silence is racism mass public protest while social distancing is a difficult ask. And after a week which has seen several uk demonstrations over the killing of george floyd in the us, the government here is asking people not to take to the streets this weekend. The reason that its vital that people stick to the rules this weekend is to protect themselves and their family from this horrific disease. So please, for the safety of your loved ones, do not attend large gatherings, including demonstrations, of more than six people. In the United States, the protests are on a scale not seen in decades. But there, too, there are concerns about what impact they might have on the spread of covid 19. Black lives matter here, some of those demonstrating have tried to keep two metres apart. But on twitter the home secretary, priti patel, also urged people not to attend, saying coronavirus remains a real threat. Last night the World Health Organization changed its advice on the wearing of face masks. In light of evolving evidence, who advises that governments should encourage the general public to wear masks where there is widespread transmission, and physical distancing is difficult, such as on public transport, in shops, or in other confined or crowded environments. In england, it will be compulsory to wearface masks on public transport from the 15th ofjune. The government hopes such measures will keep infection rates down, although some argue the advice has come too late. And the uk has passed another grim milestone, with more than 40,000 people having now died from covid 19. The number of new deaths in all settings confirmed yesterday was 357. And there are concerns about the r rate, the number of people each infected person passes the virus onto. One computer model shows that in most areas of england to be just below the key figure of 1. 0, except in the north west and south west, where it is estimated to be right on 1. 0. A different study says scotland, wales and Northern Ireland are on 0. 8. All right, then, off we go. So as children return to school in many parts of the country, the infection rate remains on a knife edge. Too much so for Tameside Council in Greater Manchester, which is now strongly advising its schools not to reopen on monday. Our Political Correspondent helen cattjoins us now from our london newsroom. Weve just heard how the rate of infection also known as the r number could vary across the uk. What does this mean for easing lockdown restrictions further . Politicians have had a realfocus politicians have had a real focus on the r rate because if it is below one, then the virus is in decline. If it is above all at one then the virus will spread exponentially. As we move forward into the phases of lifting restrictions, those regional measures are going to become even more important. Weve already is seen that in the different regions moving at different speeds, so it could start. Looking at things like localised lockdown is, helping to stamp out localised outbreaks as they pop up. Scientific advisers agree that there is a higher r rate in the south west and north west of england, although they dont think that it has hit one yet. In some parts though that figure is pretty close to one, so people are weighing up close to one, so people are weighing up the benefits of unlocking the economy and with the risks, and they dont allow too much room for manoeuvre. In the United States, the nfl has responded to the anger about Police Brutality and racism, by saying players should be allowed to drop to one knee in protest during the National Anthem. The league had previously banned them from doing so, and President Trump had once said protesting players should be fired. Our north america correspondent, david willis, reports. All that started with this man, back in 2016. San francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the National Anthem in protest at the Racial Injustice of the time. A single minded act that led to him being mocked by President Trump and ostracised by the league. Kaepernicks contract was not renewed, and he has not played professional football since. Four years on, the sentiments he expressed than have come into sharp relief following the death of george floyd, prompting kaepernicks former colleagues to join the growing chorus for change. How many times do we need to ask you to listen to your players . What will it take . For one of us to be murdered by Police Brutality . What if i was george floyd . If i was george floyd . Some of the leagues biggest names took part in this video calling on League Officials to reject racism, and admit they were wrong back then in preventing the players from protesting peacefully. President trump, who four years ago called on team owners to sack players who took the knee, has re entered the fray, taking to twitter to echo his previous refrain, no kneeling. And while 75 of nfl players are black, the majority of team owners are white, many of them supporters of the president. The leagues commissioner would normally be expected to support mrtrump, but these are different times. Admitting they had made mistakes, he instead backed the players. Without black players, there would be no National Football league. And the protests around the country are emblematic of the centuries of silence, inequality and oppression of black players, coaches, fans and staff. We are listening, i am listening. From the inner cities to the corridors of one of the most popular sports in the land, the calls for change are echoing in every corner of american life. Hes the veteran we first met here on breakfast a year ago today as we marked the 75th anniversary of d day the allied invasion of nazi occupied france. You were there with him that morning. It was an amazingly emotional and poignant, and brilliant, moving day. Harry was meant to be in normandy this morning with more than 70 other veterans for the unveiling of a memorial to the british troops killed there, but coronavirus means the trip had to be cancelled. Instead, breakfasts tim muffet has been to catch up with harry and to present him with a special surprise. A remarkable 12 months for a remarkable man. A year ago, on the 75th anniversary of d day, Harry Billinge appeared on bbc brea kfast. And dont say im a hero. Im no hero. I was lucky, im here. All the heroes are dead. The 94 year old d day veteran had raised huge sums for a memorial in normandy. His efforts earned him an mbe in march, but the pandemics delayed the completion of the memorial and harrys at home. Lovely to see you, tim. Howve you been keeping . Ive been a bit sad, and i have been here on my own, more or less, since i got the medal on the 3rd of march. The plan was for you and many other veterans to go to the memorial today, but obviously you cant do that, can you . No. Im there in my mind, so thats one thing about me, ive got a very good memory. We have got some images of the memorial, we can show you. Oh, yes, youre very kind. The memorials now due to be officially opened next year. When weve filmed harry, hes often mentioned one man in particular, joseph neades. A mate of mine died in my arms, and he had a baby, he was called neades. What do you remember aboutjoseph neades . So, i think it was five weeks after d day, and it was in this field, and i was in a hole in the ground, and this fellow, neades, was quite close to me. When i heard he had a young baby, it really moved me to tears. And he died in my arms and we said a prayer, and he held my hand. And ill never forget that, its very personal to me. I know a lot of people died, but its very personal because he was there with me, close. The baby boy he told you about is no longer a baby boy. A man. Hes 77. Must be. And the Normandy Memorial trust have been doing some detective work and we are delighted to say that that young boy, now a 77 year old man, would like to talk to you. Id be pleased to talk to him i dont know where he lives. You can talk to him now, because hes going to be talking to you via the computer. Never thought id have the pleasure of speaking to this boy. Very moving for me. This is the first time harry and alan had ever spoken to each other. Hello, alan. Hello, harry its lovely to meet you. I really cant believe that this is the opportunity to speak to someone who was actually there at the time when my father died. Well, im very moved to speak to you, alan. So, which beach did you land on . I landed on gold. On gold beach . I think yourfather landed on sword beach. Ive seen a lot of blokes die, but no one quite as close as your dad. Quite close to me, he was. I held his hand, isaid a prayer with him. Yes. Im glad you were with him, harry. Yes, i know. You know, obviously it was a pretty traumatic time for all of you. I was 18 then. So i devoted my life, really, to remember all them poor devils that never came back, and your father was up front with me, because he died with me. And i think i died a bit that day your dad died, because ive never been the same man since. And its never left me. D day has never left me. And so your dad is still alive. To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. Thank you, harry. God bless you too, alan. Im very grateful that weve been able to meet, if not in real life, at least on the screen. Well, we met. And we live in hearts, we still live together. Alan, what was that like, to speak to Harry Billinge . To think that he was actually there, with my father, was so special. The truth is that ive got no recollection of my father whatsoever. Harrys amazing character, you cant help but be infected by his enthusiasm for the memorial and for keeping the memory of those who died like my father alive. Harry and alan plan to stay in touch, a unique bond strengthened after 76 years. What was that like, to speak to the son of the man who died in your arms . I dont know how i had the strength to say that, to be honest. Ill always carry it here. All that imagine that all those years ago, to talk to a bloke who was a baby. Marvellous. Hejust he just captures the mood, doesnt he . It is coming from such a genuine place, but his story, and the story of the young men dying in his arms when he was a young man, is something that we hear time and time again. Its that phrase, d day has never left me. The memorial which harry helped to fundraise will bare the names of more than 20,000 troops under british command who died in normandy. Among them, brothers robert and joseph casson. We can speak now to their niece, mary, whojoins us alongside her husband, john, and former head of the british army and trustee of the Normandy Memorial trust, lord dannatt, who is in norfolk. Lovely to have you with us. These two brothers, joseph and robert, what is so poignant in this is that just a day apart they fell while doing their part to protect the world. Tell us about them. Well robert and joseph both landed on d day in different regiments. Robert trained with the 46 commandos, and ended up with the full special services ended up going on tojuno beach with the canadians. And joseph was with their ninth dorrance who landed on gold beach in the second wave on d day. Unfortunately, robert was killed going in on the landing craft, and joseph landed. He for, i think they were on the way. He was wounded on the 21st ofjune and sadly died of his wounds on the 27th ofjune is at a casualty clearing station called jerusalem. One touching thing isjust station called jerusalem. One touching thing is just how your grandmother, your mother wanted them to be buried together. Its something she has never really been able to talk about. That lawrence was just too painful. Able to talk about. That lawrence wasjust too painful. My grandma a lwa ys wasjust too painful. My grandma always find it difficult to talk about, my mum has always talked about, my mum has always talked about it. Like harry said, they were all raising your heart really. This weekend, 76 years on. How are your family market, mary . It is not a normal situation. You cant travel. We were both born in whitehaven where they came from, up in west cumbria, which used to be cumberland. One of my cousins who lives up there has actually gone and put some puppies by a small Normandy Memorial in one of the churchyards in whitehaven town centre. He has left a cross for us. So many families having to come up with remote families having to come up with re m ote ways families having to come up with remote ways of remembering. Lets turn to lord dunnett. It is going to bea turn to lord dunnett. It is going to be a very difficult very different memorial isnt it . We would all love to be in normandy at this moment. Many of us were this time last year and a very cold morning when we inaugurated the memorial, that wonderful sculpture that the Prime Minister, theresa may, unveiled. We were never going to be opening the f visually completed memorial today. It was i was going to take a bit longer than be on the 6th ofjune, 2020. We had had plans for the 4th of september, but coronavirus stopped work on construction, and the memorial will be opened sometime later in the year. The memorial is really important the role of the stories we have been hearing this morning. Harry and the young man who died in his arms. The brothers, there will be remembered at this memorial. All of their names will be brought together in this memorial. I think thatis together in this memorial. I think that is a wonderful thing. Harry can walk through the Memorial Court and look at the pillars, and see the names of his comrades who died. The casson brothers will also be there. All the names will be there. It is something for everyone. The general public have been terribly generous since is going to then Normandy Memorial trust so far. If you go to their website, you can sign up to become a guardian of the memorial. I think a memorial in place is not the end of something but the beginning of something. We have to make sure that the memorial looks as wonderful in 50 years time as at its official opening. Maintaining it is going to bea opening. Maintaining it is going to be a big challenge for us as well. So please do is ill give you a quote that came from harry, to live in huts that left behind, we never die. Its so important that stories are told. That emotion and gratitude that we have continues. How important is it for you . Very much so. The veterans have shown us, given such inspiration to us all, and what they are doing has been marvellous. With actually wanting to build this memorial on the normandy beaches. I think it has been a privilege to do the research into what happened to the family as well. We have been greatly assisted by other members of the family, but its also nice to see other people who are more remotely involved, and to see your relationship with harry is beautiful. Company Sergeant Major when the cross on d day and we think of him especially at this time. We will spare a thought from time. Frankly, probably asa british memorial. Frankly, probably as a nation we should have done this 40 or 50 years ago. Thank goodness, now, we have had their determination to put something in place. It will bea to put something in place. It will be a truly remarkable memorial with those names on it. I think those families, all those who want to experience the beauty of that site, looking over gold beach at aaron marsh, i think it is something that people really want to go to and stop and reflect and give thanks to those who served, fell, who died, to give us the kind of freedom that we live in today. Without them, our europe would be a very different place. Our lives would be very different. Thank you very much. Fingers crossed, this day next year, maybe we will do a live broadcast then you will all be there and we will be able to reconnect in that place on this anniversary. The second half of the weekend, this High Pressure trying to come in from the atlantic, we still have a northerly wind on sunday, but it probably wont be as strong as today. There will be some rain in the morning moving down into the midlands. It should become lighter and more patchy. The skies should brighten with some sunshine coming through, a much better afternoon across southern parts of england and wales, and here you get the benefits of the sunshine, with temperatures given a boost up to 18 or19 temperatures given a boost up to 18 or 19 celsius. Eventually that weather front will arrive in the north west to bring a spell of rain later in the north west, but ahead of that through monday and tuesday the weather is a bit quieter.
