Social distancing on a construction site can be difficult, especially when the nature of the job involves working closely together but some measures in place include hand gel stations, one way walking systems, enhanced cleaning of communal equipment and staggered start and finish times. The government has set out its covid 19 secure guidelines for workforces in england to follow. Employers need to carry out a coronavirus Risk Assessment and keep staff to meet apart where possible. Factories and warehouses are advised to split staff split staff into shift groups and provide drop off zones for parts and equip it. Offices and call should introduced one systems and meeting should be held remotely as possible. Shops are told to limit customer numbers and remove services that require close contact. Garden centres in wales were allowed to reopen on monday. Those in england are expected to follow suit tomorrow. Weve been working every day, plants have to be water, weve been spacing plants, pruning plants, cooling them down, just trying to stop them growing so when we are allowed to open, which we thought would be in the middle of may, we we re would be in the middle of may, we were ready. Other high street shops could be open from june. Four pubs and restaurants, it will bejuly at the earliest. All our workplaces are changing and for the first time, people in england are advised to our Face Coverings in enclosed spaces. The government says no one will be obliged to work in an unsafe environment and the pressure is on employers to adapt their workspaces and quickly for this new socially distant world. Very interesting seeing all those changes that will need to be made and new workplace guidelines for business and staff. Another key announcement from the chancellor later today about the furloughing scheme. And how much the government will subsidise peoples wages. Not that long ago we did not even know what furloughing was. that long ago we did not even know what furloughing was. I think that might end up as word of the year. It did exist before. TheJob Retention scheme as the official name for it, where the government has been subsidising wages and paying 80 of peoples wages. They stay on the payroll of their company but they are not allowed to work for that business in that time and the idea was to protect jobs business in that time and the idea was to protectjobs and stop from laying off staff. That was until the rent end ofjune and we expect to hear from the chancellor today about what happens next. There are reports that it will be continued for longer, it may be lower subsidies, it may be for different set is. A people are waiting for Different Things and we have had a lot of questions from people on this topic about what might happen next and what protections they have along with the guidelines for the workplace. I have alex with me, an employment lawyer to help me answer these questions. Good morning. Starting with the furloughing scheme. Leslie and has gotten in touch saying she is a single mother of two who cannot work from home. Will she be encouraged back to work before her kids go back to school and can she rely on the furloughing scheme continuing in some capacity until the children are back . The Prime Minister said yesterday that pa rents Prime Minister said yesterday that parents whose children are not going back to school yet should not be forced back to work. Obviously from a practical point of view it is more or less impossible for many working pa rents to or less impossible for many working parents to return to work until the schools are fully reopened. The fellow scheme guidance says it can be used for those with caring responsibilities but we need to find out exactly what form any extension of the scheme will take. One option that has been mooted is that it will be extended and, as you mentioned, ata be extended and, as you mentioned, at a lower subsidy and that stuff may be able to work part time rather than not working at all. I think pa rents than not working at all. I think parents will have to see what the chancellor announces later today. Another topic, i would say the question i have been asked most is about what rights you have about going back to work. Pete wants to know her rights if she does not think the workplace is secure. Another on instagram wanting to know ifa another on instagram wanting to know if a employer can withhold pay if an employee does not want to return because they are asthmatic or do not wish to put their family at risk. What do you say . A number of rights may come to play in this situation. As an employee, if you have a reasonable belief that there is a situation of serious and imminent danger at your workplace that you cannot be expected to avoid, you have a right to not treated to a mentally or dismissed because you either refuse to go to work. There isa either refuse to go to work. There is a big question in every case about whether the employee does reasonably believe that sort of danger exists and that will depend on what measures the employer has put in place. Some staff will also have attentional disability discrimination or sex discrimination claims if their employer imposes an obligation to return to work that disadvantages them because of a medical condition or their caring responsibilities. But i think what will happen in practice for many of these people is that they will have to have individual conversations with their employer and i suspect that if the employer believes they have implemented measures to make the workplace secure there is a possibility that employers will withhold pay for staff who refused to return and see whether they pursue employment tribunal claims. Pursuing an employment tribunal claim is not satisfactory position foran claim is not satisfactory position for an employer because that can ta ke for an employer because that can take at least one year for that to be resolved. And of all the stressful things people have going on in their lives at the moment,. People would like to avoid that. Thank you very much for answering a few of our students. And from june 1st there will be a phased return for schools and nurseries again in england. Last night new guidance was issued which limits class sizes to 15 and calls for staggered drop off and pick up times. But yesterday, he said he didnt expect there to be a rush of people heading to their workplaces this week and the governments new strategy document has indicated our workspaces should be kept what it calls covid secure. All employers will have to carry out Risk Assessment before they resume operations. The tuc has called the move a step in the right direction. But the problem of public transport remains. The transport secretary grant schapp says he is working on operators on how to bring Services Back to normal but that wont solve the problem for most commuters, of keeping two metres apart. One partial solution is Face Coverings, though again borisjohnson said wearing them was advisory, not mandatory. And if people cant return to work, well, the chancellor, rishi sunak, will give more details about the furlough scheme later today which is paying the wages of millions of employees. But labours leader says the governments messaging has sowed confusion. What the country needs at this time is clarity and reassurance and at the moment, both are in pretty short supply. Its possible in the short term, people will be allowed outside to exercise more but some areas which will be different for instance, not expected that schools here will return this side of the summer holidays. They started the enginejune, start ofjuly and its thought people will return to their desks in a phased manner and set timber, when the autumn term restarts. Ministers here in five different parties of the power sharing government are finalising the plan. We expect it will be a 5 stage plan with measures every few weeks and looking to counterparts in london and edinburgh and cardiff, people here in ministers are very much in contact with people in the Irish Republic. Were not going to come out and make a huge statement, are quietly saying dont visit at the moment, we are trying to get ready for you. As soon as its sensible, we will be open and we will be here with welcoming, wide open arms saying thank you for coming and come again. They are of course desperate for the beach to be packed, the hotels to be full in the bars, busy and they promised to be ready for when the lockdown is lifted, but not yet. At the moment, we cant see any way around july opening at all because of the safe distancing. If we have the chance to open, we will do but obviously we will keep a minimum amount and the ba rd will keep a minimum amount and the bard arent that big anyway but how we will do that, i dont know. On a bright and breezy day like this, youd expect to see more than one woman and her two dogs on the main beach in Weston Super Mare but when people do start moving around, when the lockdown starts to reopen, will places be able to cope when services arent there, visitors, walkers, people taking exercise in the park . 250 miles away on the opposite coastline, the changes in england are causing similar concerns in hornsey. Very scared of what will happen when everyone comes to the beaches. I think it will open up a can of worms and people just come for the day out and abuse the system. Policing the lockdown so far as in many areas proved extremely difficult. So what about this next phase . Just think carefully about what you are going to do because there might be people wanting to do there might be people wanting to do the same thing and think about your family, think about those you love and think about the fact this virus does kill. For me personally, would have been travelling to the beach all walking my dogs or kids, i would be thinking about doing it twice, its a simple given in these circumstances. Back on the beach in Weston Super Mare, south wales is clearly visible across the water but it remains out of bounds for daytrippers or tourists from england as the travel rules remain unchanged in wales and in scotland. We have a number of concerns over what the government announced yesterday. There is going to be an increase in day visitors, thats ok for people to do, so naturally they are going to want to visit beautiful places. To enjoy some of the fantastic landscapes and get some exercise and get a boost to their mental health, a breakfrom lockdown between have, particularly difficult challenges herewith an older population and very high rates of coronavirus which means now probably isnt really the best time to be coming. I imagine you have spent your entire professional life working in this industry saying come to the Lake District, its beautiful. Now here you are on national television, understandably for many people, saying dont come. Its counterintuitive to everything we do in our visitor economy here. Weve got some very good ranges of businesses, staff desperate to get back to work, start welcoming visitors and providing fantastic experiences they come for today, enjoying that wonderful landscape and supporting our vibrant communities we have. Tourism is a significant employer. And without it we wouldnt have the fantastic range of services that we do have so while it is totally counterintuitive to everything we do, the safety of our communities has to come first. Long we are seeing a very communities has to come first. Long we are seeing a very high death rate here which we need to stop first of all we can really be in a position to welcome visitors and as soon as that does happen, with the support of our local Emergency Services and hopefully the support of people just thinking very carefully about their choices, we will be able to do that very choices, we will be able to do that very soon choices, we will be able to do that very soon and maybe even as early as july. What sort of things are in place . The landscape is obviously there, but i imagine like the rest of england and the uk, Everything Else is shut . Everything is shut. Just like everywhere else, weve got some pharmacies and essential shopping available with things like the supermarkets, but thats it. If people want to come and enjoy things other than the landscape that they would normally have here, Visitor Attractions bars, restaurants, hiring boats to go out on the lake and all that kind of stuff none of thatis and all that kind of stuff none of that is available. I suppose the problem is, dan, you cant stop people from coming. If the government are saying you can travel as far as you can to enjoy the countryside and, as you said as well, to have that mental well being, if people want to come to the Lake District, i imagine theres not much you can do other than putting signs up to say please dont come to stop them from going. Theres actually nothing we can do. Theres actually nothing we can do. The government have made it clear you can travel as far as you like for recreation with your family group plus another. Thats fine. For a predominantly urban population, that makes complete sense. If i lived in a town or city, id be desperate to get out enjoying the countryside, its completely understandable. We asked people if they are not using. When theyre making their choice about where to 90, making their choice about where to go, think about the communities that they are going into and the fact that they may be inadvertently damaging those communities that they wa nt to damaging those communities that they want to come in and enjoy. We know from the first ofjune it is expected reception, year1 and year 6are expected reception, year1 and year 6 are expected to go back to Primary School, what is your reaction to that first of all . Will you be ready . Well, good morning. Yes, we are trying. We are starting to plan, but we are really gravely concerned about this as an issue. We take our job as teachers really, really seriously and we love it, we love the fact we help young people be the best versions of themselves as possible but the basic understanding of maslows hierarchy of needs makes us understand that to reach those higher levels of personal development, you need to secure your own safety and health first of all. That has to be our number one priority and at the moment, its not feeling like that is the priority. Ive got two Major Concerns really that im trying to get my head around and believe you me, since the announcement on sunday, myself and many of my colleagues havent had much sleep in trying to work out how we can do this safely. There are two huge barriers the first is this whole issue of social distancing. The Public Health is still telling us that two metres is what we should be aiming for. Well, if i were to look at my classrooms and spaces, the most people i can bring back, the most people i can bring back, the most people i can bring back, the most children i can bring back is two groups plus the existing provision for Vulnerable Children and key workers. This proposal put forward would see me exceed that and bring in nearly half of my population, my school population, which mean i would have to reduce the social distancing to within one metre. All you need to do to get an idea of what to metres distancing requires in terms of space, look at the house of commons at the moment and the number of mps in there and how close they are sitting to each other and how that severely curtails the number of people you can have in the number of people you can have in the setting. I just the number of people you can have in the setting. Ijust cant the number of people you can have in the setting. I just cant see how the number of people you can have in the setting. Ijust cant see how i can get that number of children into my school and maintain safe social distancing. Thats my first concern, and the impact that has on staff and. If you add into that special Needs Children that might need additional provision and staffing, you start to reduce that space even further. The other problem i can see in this is the age groups that have been selected. The age groups that are the most needing of personal attention and personal contact. Our children have lived through a national trauma. Theyve lived with death totals everyday. Theyve been very close to their families and now we are asking them to leave their families, where they feel really safe and secure, come into school and those younger children will find that really difficult to do, as will their parents, and be able to manage that and managed the fact they need help with toileting, they have runny noses, they fall over on the playground and they re noses, they fall over on the playground and theyre going to need firstaid, i playground and theyre going to need first aid, i dont understand why therefore the government says they cant see why schools wouldnt need ppe or wouldnt need masks in schools. It all seems quite nonsensical and quite reckless in terms of personal safety. We seem to be taking a risk with both the health of our very Young Children and the staff who are there to support them. Is very interesting to hear all these points. A child. It seems like its the worst possible age group to be given to try to plan and cater around. Before we went into lockdown, i was already shielding some members of staff, which meant our Staffing Levels were reduced by a third. That will continue as we move into this new provision. Im going to have to protect that group of staff but my other staff are, yes, nervous, they are anxious, anxious about bringing anything home to their own families, anxious about why its ok for them to travel on a bus and why if theyre coming to school on a bus and going to the supermarket beforehand, they should wear a mask, but at school, they dont need one. It doesnt seem to make any sense at all. Yes, they are concerned, but i know, ive watched it, weve not been shot over the last number of weeks, weve been open and weve had up to 30 or 35 children in our school and ive watched my staff being kind humanitarian s to the children in their care, humanitarian s to the children in theircare, and humanitarian s to the children in their care, and yes they come in with worries but they never let the children see that and they manage to keep as warm and atmosphere as they possibly can. But i fear moving to this number of children and the possibility of a full school by the end of term, which the government is proposing, means there is no social distancing in place, theres no question of us trying to keep children safe and apart. Thank you for your time. Labour leader sir keir starmer says the Prime Ministers roadmap for lifting the lockdown offers no clear directions. In a televised statement, he asked for more clarity and reassurance from borisjohnson. Lets speak to labours deputy leader, angela rayner. Good morning to you, angela, thank you for being with us this morning. Obviously a former shadow education secretary as well. I dont know how much you heard of Siobhan Collingwood there, the head teacher, i know the labour party and others have been asking for guidance on a number of issues and there was the 50 pages we saw yesterday and the detail about schools. Is that some of the clarity you were looking for . Theres some clarity with what the government published overnight but we need to take a step back and say on sunday, Boris Johnsons announcement caused mass confusion, he gave people 12 hours notice to go back to work and avoid public transport and said schools wouldnt open, so lots of working families we re open, so lots of working families were wondering how they get to work and whether they are safe and what they do with their children. The government did cause a huge amount of confusion and their stay alert message is confusing as well, and thats why wales, Northern Ireland and scotland have gone a separate way. We have the worst death rates in europe and the second worst in the world, so we have to take this very seriously and the government really need to step up now and give clear guidance to people, reassure them, like the head teacher you had on the programme, they need reassurance about the safety of themselves and their pupils and make sure we have a good testing, tracing an isolation system, because thats the only way going to be able to keep that r rate down. Would you have not moved to stay alert and kept the message at stay at home . It is pretty obvious from how the three other nations of our country have come together as one and theyve kept the stay at home message. I think its ambiguous, i think it is subjective and not very helpful and to trail it ahead of the weekend means people were confused and went out and the lockdown really started to left before even boris had made his statement. So i think its really incumbent on the government especially because our death rates are so high worldwide that they start listening to the science and give clear advice to people to help keep themselves and their families safe. At what stage do you try to move parts of the uk out of the lockdown, out of this current situation, to try and restart the economy while balancing that very serious issue of Public Health . think its right the government try and look at that. Looking at the other nations, theyre also looking at that, but we have to make sure the safety and guidance is their first. To give people 12 hours notice and go back on that was very irresponsible from the government. We were too slow to go into lockdown and its important we arent too fast to go out of it, because thats worse for the economy because if we have to go into a second lockdown after a further spike, that would be disastrous not just for the after a further spike, that would be disastrous notjust for the economy but for the nhs and we would have more deaths, and, like i say, we are one of the worst in the world. Its important the government give clear advice before they take measures to ease the lockdown. It is crucial that they have a testing, tracing an isolation scheme that means we can track the virus to keep the r rate down, and we havent got that from the government yet. Where do you stand on the use of Face Coverings . Would you extend it further from where the government are at the moment or is it not necessary . We asked the government and keir starmer, our labour leader, asked the government because there was some evidence that face mask would be beneficial and we asked for clarity. In the government guidance it says you can use facemasks or makeshift ones at home where possible especially in enclosed spaces like public transport, but it is still ambiguous. The government should provide facemasks if they think that is an official and make sure people have access, but we know in some care settings people are finding it difficult to get the proper ppe. Before it starts to relax lockdown and give advice like that, the government have to make sure provision is in place to give eve ryo ne a ccess , sure provision is in place to give everyone access , not sure provision is in place to give everyone access, not the ambiguous where it if you think you can get access where it if you think you can get a ccess or where it if you think you can get access or you think it will be ok. If you think theres a benefit to wearing facemasks, and there is some evidence that could make a bit of a difference, then the government should provide that facemask and make sure people have access. Looking at the week and where we expect the rain to be and how much will fall, i havent shown you this before, but this shows where the rain is likely to be and how it accumulates. Most of it is in northern scotland, here we see the wettest conditions, a bit of rain around the fringes but huge swathes will remain dry for the rest of the week because of High Pressure in charge. These to the south have produced severe conditions across france, two months of rain in two days, but we have an area of cloud and rain into the north of scotland through the day. A few showers in amongst the High Pressure, so this morning, scotland, Northern Ireland, north west england, north wales could see a future, most will be dry, more loud in the afternoon in england and wales and sunnier in the afternoon in southern scotland and northern scotland, because the rain in the morning will go south. A longer spell of rain that will move to snow, a covering in places, and only five or six at the highest, so colder compared with yesterday. Elsewhere, temperatures not farfrom yesterday, ten to 13, but the crucial thing is that winds will be lighter so the strength of the sun where youve got it will make it feel warmer. The breeze will pick up in northern scotland for a while and that will push the rain and hills needin that will push the rain and hills need in Northern England further south, so cloud in over with one or two showers. Not as cold as last night but Northern England, scotland and Northern Ireland will be chillier compared with last night and the greater chance of frost. Sunnier tomorrow across the north with only one or two showers, shower is most likely in eastern counties and similarto is most likely in eastern counties and similar to yesterday. Boris johnson has defended his plans to relax the lockdown rules in england at a faster rate than the rest of the uk. He also said he was confident that people would use their common sense after labour said more clarity was needed. Lets talk now to the Health Secretary, matt hancock. Thank you forjoining us this morning. We have again had so many viewers questions and i know you would like to answer some of those. First of all, what can we talk about some concerns about people saying lockdown is being eased too early. David king, former chief scientific advisor saying its foolhardy to go back to work, bad for the economy, bad debts, we should be more cautious about undoing block down. Your response . We are incredibly cautious about the changes that are being made and the reason for that is we have to keep our r below one but there are changes that can be made, being able to exercise more than once a day is an entirely reasonable and small change. Also, making sure that workplaces are safe, which there is going to be a lot of focus on, with new guidelines being set out by the business secretary on how to make a workplace safe for covid and that is very important, the work places are safe and people are kept safe and we are able to make these baby steps because we have got our r below one and we want to keep it that way, be cautious but there are areas where we are able to make the small changes. You talk about making workplaces safe. You say people are meant to go back to work tomorrow and the guidelines only come out this afternoon. Alcan can officers prepare . The areas where we are saying people should go to work if they cant work from home are areas where we didnt at all throughout lockdown and say they shouldnt. The areas where weve closed the work places, like in hospitality and pubs and what have you, they remain closed but Industries Like construction, which largely happens outside, and the evidence is increasingly clear that transmission is lower outside. Its not zero risk but it is lower. These have a huge Economic Impact and yet, if done safely with the right guidelines, a very small impact on transmission. This is the difficultjudgement that we have to make as a country and so far, people have followed the rules, followed the guidelines very well. We are followed the guidelines very well. We a re really, followed the guidelines very well. We are really, really pleased about how this has been a collective effort across the nation. Everybody has done our part, and we need to make small adjustments to that. But they are small and they will only be done with safety front of mine mind. If someone thinks their workplace is not safe, do they have a legal right not to go with work . This needs to be a collaborative effort. Absolutely workplaces need to follow the guidelines on making a workplace safe for our r, so that is very important. And we will be setting that out in the rules that the business secretary will talk about. Everybody who can work from home should continue to work from home should continue to work from home because that is obviously the safest way to work. Would they have a legal right not to go if they felt u nsafe . A legal right not to go if they felt unsafe . Employment law is not changed but that isnt the point. The point is businesses and their employees should be working together to make everybody, to make the best of what is a very difficult situation and im pleased the trade unions have described the progress weve made on this as a step forward , weve made on this as a step forward, weve been working with the trade unions across the board as well as with employers to get these rules right. People understand that it is important that people can get back to work because there is a massive, massive, Economic Cost to what we are having to do for Health Reasons and although i dont like that, i am absolutely determined to ensure the health of the nation s protect it but where we can put those guidelines in place to allow safer working, then we should. those guidelines in place to allow safer working, then we should. Is it true hospitals send patients with coronavirus back to care homes in england . Well, we put in place testing to ensure that hospitals send back, when people leave hospitals, they are tested and then if they are going to a care home, they are isolated until they get the results of the test and obviously if they are testing positive. This is a historical question, its the same of some claire home expect care homeowners, did they go back with coronavirus . At the start of this crisis, before there was widespread coronavirus in the community, at that point, we did take a lot of people who were in hospital that could clinically be in a care home and put them in care homes but that was before there was widespread coronavirus in the community. He then introduced the testing on leaving hospital to make sure that people leaving hospital were tested, whether they were displaying symptoms or not and one of the things i am pleased about is that we are now seeing a very things i am pleased about is that we are now seeing a very sharp reduction in the number of deaths in ca re reduction in the number of deaths in care homes. Its almost hard since the peak, just over a foot might, and also the number of people who have died in care homes, its about a quarter. That is lower than some of our international peers. Its obviously been a huge effort right from the start to protect those living in care homes. The guidance came out, the first guidance came out in february. We put care homes into lockdown earlier for the rest of the communities that has been a huge amount of effort to protect people in care homes. We had so many questions from viewers and if you would briefly answer, that would be really help for. What was really overwhelming last night, when we asked the question is, people are really concerned about when they see theirfamily really concerned about when they see their family and really concerned about when they see theirfamily and are really concerned about when they see their family and are confused about their family and are confused about the new rules. Andy says, what is the new rules. Andy says, what is the logic of going to a Garden Centre when i cant be surejoe public will stay two metres from me as opposed to sitting on my parents or partner s garden where two metres can be reliably reserved observed . What is the logic . Firstly, not everybody has a garden and not every garden is big enough. Lets say they have a garden. Thirdly, at a Garden Centre, absolutely you should remain two metres away from everyone else. A lot of this is about people following commonsense and people have used our commonsense in the last six weeks enormously. People get the intervals, stay two metres apart, outside is better than inside, dont see people unless you have to, wash your hands and clean the surfaces. Those other broad principles and that into the detail of how life operates is hugely complicated. I suppose can max uses commonsense . Can i have a friend around in my garden if we stay two metres apart . Surely its more safe than meeting at a park with more people . Well its not necessarily more safe than making in a park meeting in a park and we said that should only happen in public places. Should only happen in public places. To should only happen in public places. To go back on that, why is it not as safe or more safe . Lots of people can only get to their garden by going through their house and being with people indoors is not as safe as outdoors and so thats why weve come to this judgement and it isa weve come to this judgement and it is a balanced judgement that that is best done in a park or in a public base. So its changing from park to public place which is interesting. Its always been in a public place. Going back to the commonsense thing. Whats really clear is that everybody has their own individual thing. People can use their commonsense, if they can socially distance wherever it is, they can meet someone. One person, two metres distance outside in a public place. We brought that in so that people can see others from outside their households but also without encouraging last encouraging large groups to gather that the scientists tell us would increase the risk of the spread of the virus. The principles are really clear. What were trying to achieve, everybody understands. The people spoken to understand what stay alert means, they understand control the virus. It means these big picture intervals which are that you stay two metres apart, outside is better than inside and you dont see people u nless than inside and you dont see people unless you have to. But i also understand the pressures this puts on people and the yearning to see members of your family. Hannah says, why can children be looked after by childminders but not a member of their own family . Again, this is a balanced judgement on how to put those principles i just balanced judgement on how to put those principles ijust talked about interaction. For some peoples livelihoods, they need a childminder in order to earn an income. It is important we allow that to happen and for childminders, thats why childminders are important. At the same time, we dont want to encourage large scale, especially when grandparents are older and we know that this virus kills more older people than younger people. We dont want to encourage kids to stay with their grandparents but we do wa nt to with their grandparents but we do want to allow people where necessary to get back to work. There is a commonsense principle behind behind why weve come up with that proposal. I know it can be frustrating for people and believe you me, understand how frustrating lock down is but this is why weve come out with the principles we have and turning that into detailed rules which is obviously a bigger, complex business. You say you understand the desperation, and there is real anguish from people about not being able to see their families. In a large amount of documentation, there is mention of considering a bubble. What might that mean and when might that be in place . I totally understand this. Understand the of people who both desperately want to see members of their family but also desperately want to do the right thing. People who are really trying to do the right think that people who want to see members of their family and the principle behind this bubble idea which we are looking at, to see how big an impact it will have on r, another part of your Family Living in the household and they dont see anyone outside their household, the risk is lower of those two households meeting, so long as they dont form a chain and see people in other households but we wa nt see people in other households but we want to get this right so weve asked the scientists to look at it. It will help i think if we can do it ina way it will help i think if we can do it in a way that doesnt impact on r. It will help with a lot of this anguish of people wanting to see, you know, Family Members who are in another household, whether thats a grandparents, although there are further risks for all the grandparents or, for instance, people who are in a relationship but in different households were of course understand there is that yearning as well and i hope that we can make some progress. We are in the eighth week of lockdown, so a long time, and you can understand the desperation from so many. Another thing that came out yesterday was facial coverings in. Facial coverings. Just a few months ago, the Costume Designer Sophie Passmore was busy making elaborate costumes for an itv show called the masked singer. I know watched it. Very elaborate, wasnt it . Now shes making masks of a different sort, sewing around 10 facial coverings a day to protect key workers, and those in their care, from coronavirus. We can speak to sophie now. Good morning. Have you got one of those masks with you . Can we see it . It would be great if you could take us and our viewers through how you put it together. Certainly. Heres a basic. I say basic, this is someone whos been doing it for weeks. This is a pleated mask, it is rectangular, it has bindings on the side to close it but it is concertina, it is rectangular, so open around the nose and mouth to make it comfortable. This mask has a nose wire and a pocket for a filter, so this is a bit more advanced possibly than what an everyday person might be able to make. If we talk about something really straightforward, you could take a t shirt. My husband didnt mind. Take his old t shirt, cut off an arm, the bigger the better really, and if you take the bottom of that he should and cut it all the way along into a strip, you can get something you can pull really tight like this, and it turns into a perfect string. Nice and soft and stretchy. You can take this, the arm of the t shirt, pop it on there. This is probably the most simple facemask hack that you can put together, and it can look nice too if you use your lovely t shirts, as long as you dont mind. And you tie that. Right . Sophie, you make. You make it look actually doable for anybody it is doable, it is if you look at online on facebook, youtube, youll find loads and loads of tutorials for how to turn t shirts, socks, you know, all sorts into a mask. But the basic principle, if you are a little bit handy with a thread and needle, youre going to take a piece of fabric, youre going to fold it in half and if you fold it the wrong sides together, when you sow it down the side and turn it inside out, it will look really nice and neat. You will look really nice and neat. You will finish that edge to bind that edge, and what youre going to do is make a tube of fabric, the same principle as the t shirt mask, so that when you got that tube, you can stick your strings through it and it is like a drawstring, it works on its own. Heres another version. If you want to make this more fancy, more finish, and if youve got more skills, thats absolutely fine, you can finish those edges a bit more. The top here is done, for example. Thats a basic facemask and thats going to be comfortable, because thats whats important. If youre wearing something you cant breathe through, its going to start sweating, its going to start becoming moist, and thats when it becomes unhygienic. Sophie, run us through who youve been making those for and how have they been going down, once youve been making and handing out . Yes, so ive been making them at fulltilt for the past six weeks. We started at the end of march. And all of the masks i have made have been donated. Within brighton, where i live, we have donated them around care homes and volunteers that go to peoples houses to deliver food, homeless shelters et cetera, and every time i drop them off, its a wonderful interaction, people are very happy for them, and i havent been able to make them fast enough. I mention i only make ten per day because im caring for children and i have other things im doing, but when we get a batch in brighton with our group, we pull them together and send them around swimming full. Briefly, are you wearing a mask when youre out and about . Absolutely. This is a slightly different version, a shape mask, and i use the t shirt material shaped. It is so soft and stretchy. Then i pop this on. There you go. Perfect fit perfect fit these fitted ones need to actually be fitted for the individuals face and also this distance here, so thats a little bit more. Sean is speaking to the boss Michael Oleary. A view if stan butts but ryanair looking to get 40 of scheduled flights up and running byjuly if certain restrictions are lifted a few ifs and buts. They want to fly on 90 of the route network, those destinations people want to get to, they want to provide that. It feels like now when were talking about a 14 day quarantine for passengers arriving into the uk at the moment, that that seems a long way off. Explain, a lot of your Statement Today explains Intra European Union flights and what the Irish Government might do but talking about the uk, 14 day quarantine measures put in place by the uk government is on the way, can you expect to run your scheduled flights in those circumstances . expect to run your scheduled flights in those circumstances . I think we can but whats regrettable about the 14 day isolation is one, it is not science based, because if it was, you would be exempting the french, and two made his largely ignored. We wa nt to and two made his largely ignored. We want to encourage the uk government to apply effective measures against covid 19, which, to apply effective measures against covid 19,which, on to apply effective measures against covid 19, which, on board aircraft, would be temperature checks and facemasks on passengers and our crew. Thats what we implement in from the first ofjuly. As we move the schedule to 1000 flights per day. We are talking aboutjuly and august, when lots of british families will go abroad for their two week holiday and they have little difficulty returning back for the september restart of the schools and isolating and home before the school starts. Because of the two week isolation not being science based, and is largely unenforceable anyway, most people will ignore it. To clarify, if the restrictions stay the same from the uk government, you still aim to get this percentage of scheduled flights up and running, you dont need those restrictions to change . No, these flights will largely be full of british families outbound going on holiday to spain and portugal and italy on very low prices. They will typically go abroad for two weeks and will be backin abroad for two weeks and will be back in the uk and can self isolate readily before the schools reopen in september. What the two week restriction will meditate against or block is business travel, which is normally a one or two day visit to the uk. Clearly that wont be possible with these 14 day restrictions being in place, but because the 14 day restrictions are not science based and are unenforceable anyway, we think they will disappear pretty quickly and be replaced by a much more effective set of measures to prevent the spread of covid, facemasks and temporary controls. Thats whats worked on asian flights temperature controls. How are ryanair going to go above and beyond to make passengers safe . Are you going to sell fewer tickets per plane to give more space . You are saying no queueing for the toilets. What more are you doing . We have released a 2. 5 minute video this morning on ryanair. Com and we are calling on passengers to minimise social contact, so carry on bags, download the app, that is your check in. At the airport, use hand washes and use facemasks through the airport and on the aircraft, you will have a temperature check, above 38 and you will be asked to go home. Family groups when travelling together need to sit together with Young Children, but business only functions, if we can sell most of the seats on most of the flights. We accept that it will be lower injuly and august but we dont need social distancing and the government has recommended where social distancing isnt possible, you can wear a facemask and thats the effective measure from the spread of covid 19, not ineffective measures like the 14 die isolation, which no one will stick to anyway. 14 day isolation. Why would anyone buy a ryanair at the moment when these flights might not take off . They will take off, they will operate from the first ofjuly. I want to ask about refunds, mr oleary. Why would you run the risk of not being able to get your money back quickly . We spoke to you a couple of weeks ago and you said it could be six months before you get your money back from ryanair and weve seen cou ntless back from ryanair and weve seen countless customers having issues with that. Thats true but thats because we and all the other airlines are dealing with an historic backlog of right cancellations imposed on governments from april through to june. Cancellations imposed on governments from april through tojune. flight from april through tojune. Flight cancellations. Theres 50 million. We have got rid of most of the much black log already, but the flights in july will operate the much black log already, but the flights injuly will operate backlog. They will operate and there is no restriction on these at the moment. Once prevented them operating has been the lockdown. Lockdowns across europe are being lifted and in countries worst affected by britain, spain and france and italy, are operating again and these flights will operate and there is no risk of a refund situation. Our top story borisjohnson has defended his plans to relax the lockdown rules in england at a faster rate than the rest of the uk. He also said he was confident that people would use their common sense. In england from tomorrow people can go outdoors as often as they want and can meet with one person from another household in a public space as long as social distancing is respected. If you cant work from home the advice is to go back to work from tomorrow. Guidance on how public transport can cope will be issued later today. In a new development for england, people are advised to wear Face Coverings in enclosed spaces like trains and buses, and from june 1st there will be a phased return for schools and nurseries again in england. Last night new guidance was issued which limits class sizes to 15 and calls for staggered drop off and pick up times. Were also expecting an announcement by the chancellor, rishi sunak, on the future of the coronavirus Job Retention scheme which subsidises the wages of more than six million people. John mcmanus has this report. There had been accusations that the Prime Ministers new strategy was confusing and at monday evenings downing street press conference, members of the public questioned Boris Johnson directly. How is it logical that i, as a Primary School teacher, can mix with the many returning children but seeing my relatives is still not allowed . Yesterday, you left the nation with more questions than answers. Why have you been so vague with who can start back at work and which businesses can reopen this week . Its when you come to take small steps back to normality, as we are now, that clearly the message becomes finer, more complicated. On sunday, mrjohnson had said people in england could go back to work from monday if it was safe and he advised against using public transport to get there, an impossibility for many. But yesterday, he said he didnt expect there to be a rush of people heading to their workplaces this week, and the governments new strategy document has indicated how workspaces should be kept what it calls covid secure. All employers will have to carry out Risk Assessment before they resume operations. The tuc has called the move a step in the right direction. But the problem of public transport remains. The transport secretary grant schapps says he is working on operators on how to bring Services Back to normal but that wont solve the problem for most commuters, of keeping two metres apart. One partial solution is Face Coverings, though again borisjohnson said wearing them was advisory, not mandatory. And if people cant return to work, well, the chancellor, rishi sunak, will give more details about the furlough scheme later today, which is paying the wages of millions of employees. But labours leader says the governments messaging has sowed confusion. What the country needs at this time is clarity and reassurance and at the moment, both are in pretty short supply. And looming over all of this is the increasing death toll. In the last 24 hours, 210 people have died in the uk across all settings. There have now been a total of 32,065 deaths. The new strategy has laid out other details aimed at bringing back a degree of normality to life in england. One idea is for a household bubble, where two households can interact with each other but not with others. Another is for Primary School children to be back at their desks for a month before summer in class sizes of 15. A projected timetable of sorts, and one the government will bejudged on. Our Political Correspondent Jessica Parker is in westminster. There has been so much more information released, but genuinely so many people have questions. What will be learned today . Today we will get some guidance on public transport, that is after we had a flurry of documents yesterday following the government being criticised for not coming forward with enough details, so we had guidance on what to do in workplaces, how to make them safer, also schools, with this plan for Primary Schools to have a staggered return from early june. Primary schools to have a staggered return from earlyjune. But as these details emerge, it can be quite complicated and there are certain cloa ks. Complicated and there are certain cloaks. Ministers are being pressed on these details. You guys have been talking to Health Secretary matt hancock this morning, he is being asked by viewers of bbc breakfast why is it that i can go and meet a friend in a busy park two metres away but i cant go and sit with them in, for example, their garden . It is not necessarily more safe than meeting in a park. For instance, lots of people can only get to their garden by going through their house, and being with people indoors is not as safe as outdoors. And so that is why we have come to this judgment. It isa why we have come to this judgment. It is a balanced judgment that that is best in a park or in a public place. I think that because perhaps the government realises that they cant answer every single question that every Single Person may have, that every Single Person may have, thatis that every Single Person may have, that is why you are now seeing this appealfor people that is why you are now seeing this appeal for people to use their common sense across the country. Worth reiterating of course that this new guidance applies to england. Scotland, wales and Northern Ireland are keeping the stay at home message, while england is moving to a stay alert message. Meanwhile, you mention something potentially significant today, we will hear at some point in some form from rishi sunak, the chancellor, about thejob from rishi sunak, the chancellor, about the Job Retention scheme, the further scheme temporarily paying the wages of millions of people. He has talked about the scheme not being sustainable at the current rate in the longer term but he has also talked about not wanting to create a cliff edge. The sense i am getting is that it will not necessarily be brought to a hard, sharp end. Thank you, jessica. The lockdown rules for scotland and wales will remain mostly unchanged, but the Northern Ireland executive is expected to publish a five stage plan today to set out a slow easing of its restrictions. Our ireland correspondent chris page joins us from belfast. Give us an idea of how the plan might differfrom give us an idea of how the plan might differ from what we have seen discussed in england . It will be a tailored plan for Northern Ireland. I expect some elements could be similarto i expect some elements could be similar to england, for example i think it is certainly possible that people will be allowed to exercise more outside, but other areas will be different. For instance we know it is very unlikely schools will return the side of the summer holidays, which begin here injuly. It is likely there will be a phased return for pupils when the autumn term begins in september. There will bea term begins in september. There will be a fight stage plan with measures reviewed every three weeks, so no major immediate changes certainly before the end of this month. As well as being in contact with thy cou nterpa rts well as being in contact with thy counterparts in england, scotland and wales, ministers here have also beenin and wales, ministers here have also been in touch with the dublin government, the Health Authorities there. Bearing in mind this is the only part of the uk with a land border, the Irish Republic has already launched its exit strategy, another five stage plan with dates attached in the final stage, providing the viruses kept under control, is scheduled to kick in there on the 10th of august. The five parties in the power sharing executive instalments have worked on this plan for a number of days now, it is believed it will be laid before the Stormont Assembly today, there will be statements in the assembly and these decisions are the biggest decisions that members of any devolved government you have ever had to make a Northern Ireland. Why would you want to cure something you can prevent in the first place . I have kind of taken the view that if its not being encouraged officially, its a personal choice and not one i take but if they then go and say we should, why havent we done it sooner . It was quite busy today, i was quite shocked but im not surprised. And we are now all being encouraged to wear masks. There was hardly anyone on the carriage that was wearing it, apart from me and how does that make you feel . Quite anxious, but im not surprised. In some places, public transport hasnt been as busy but on the metrolink tram service in manchester, for example, there are fears that as government guidance takes effect tomorrow, passenger numbers will grow. I think from wednesday, itll probably grow loads more. That is my main concern, is being on the trams and being packed like sardines. If people listen, were sweet. If people dont listen, there is nothing you can do. If were going to get locked down even more, then who is to blame . The first steps towards easing lock down in england are taken. We can speak now to graham vidler, from the confederation of passenger transport, which represents bus companies, and to anthony smith, from the passenger watchdog, transport focus. So many people will be focusing on this today. Good morning to you both. Graham, in buses, how will social distancing work, do you think . Good morning, louise. We have already been operating bus services throughout the lockdown so far, operating about 40 to 50 of services across the country, we already have plenty of experience of working with customers to manage social distancing. As more and more people return to public transport and buses we will be putting on more services and will continue to work with our passengers to give them simple guidelines on how to maintain social distancing, such as keep an empty social distancing, such as keep an e m pty row social distancing, such as keep an empty row in front of you and behind you when choosing a seat. We will let passengers no that they can expect to see more blissful signs in future, they might have to wait longer at the bus stop than they used to. They might see more bus full signs. Anthony, what are your concerns and how would you like them addressed . We halfturn research, every week we are talking to 2000 people thinking about using transport, asking them what they are doing at the moment. We had in research. People are saying they will walk, cycle and drive more, but up will walk, cycle and drive more, but up to will walk, cycle and drive more, but uptoa will walk, cycle and drive more, but up to a quarter of people said they would use triplet public transport if social distancing is in place, sanitiser is available and people are wearing Face Coverings. So that sense of needing to feel safe is very, very important and i think what we need to see is a three way agreement between the government, the transport industry and passengers. Government needs to clearly set out who can travel and when so that it suppresses the demand, we have that message, only travel on public transport if you have no other choice. Rail, bus and transport for london need to set out clearly what passengers should expect in terms of buying tickets, social distancing, passengers had to do their part, and in particular i think a strong message about wearing a Face Covering is absolutely crucial to reassure other passengers on public transport. If those things are in place, ithink we on public transport. If those things are in place, i think we could see people return. Can i pick up the point about Face Coverings, if people are trying to get on a bus without a Face Covering and you say they need to leave a seat in front and behind them empty, if in your view they are not obeying the guidelines, what happens . Who polices it . To the bus conductors or bus drivers say you cant be here . What happens . As anthony said, i think it is important to have a three way relationship between government century and locally, operators and passengers. It would be very difficult to ask bus drivers to be the Police Officers of wearing Face Coverings, for example. They have a difficult enough job which they are doing fantastically at the moment. It is really important that passengers pick up that very clear message which starts to come through from government about the importance of wearing Face Coverings, we will not be able to ask bus drivers to enforce who can and cannot get on vehicles because of whether or not we are following those advisory guidelines. Graham cant see you nodding along. What are your thoughts, anthony . nodding along. What are your thoughts, anthony . I think it will be messy when it starts, there will be messy when it starts, there will be no enforcement. You cant expect staff to do this, the unions have concerns about it, there are not enough police and passengers will have to police themselves, it will ta ke have to police themselves, it will take time to settle down. It is like supermarkets, they take a lot of precautions to make it safe that you cannot maintain social distancing. Public transport is geared up to carry lots of people longer distances so social distancing is tricky. It will take time to settle down but we will get back to a new normal and public transport is therefore people who have no other choice. It is a good time now to grasp looking at things like rail fares, going contactless, you will never get a better time to sort out some of these things. And thiney, we know people are encouraged to go back to work from tomorrow if they can, had these guidelines come out soon enough but about anthony, we know people are encouraged. Lets talk now tojo roberts, who is desperate to spend some quality time with her mum so they can grieve together jos dad tony died from coronavirus last month but also to celebrate the arrival ofjos twin grandsons last week. There is a lot going on. Jo is in lichfield with her daughter lauren. Lauren, i had to congratulate you on the birth of your sons, how brilliant . Lets start with you, jo, and not being able to see your mum during a really difficult time. How much difference would it make to be able to see her in a public space . It is going to make a large amount of difference, i suppose, in the sense that at the moment, obviously ican sense that at the moment, obviously i can only see her through the window all the doorfrom i can only see her through the window all the door from her garden. I suppose when the announcement was coming on sunday from borisjohnson about any changes that were going to be around the lifting of some of the restrictions currently going through, i suppose we were all eagerly anticipating what these might be. We have had to go through the grieving process apart, and my mum bet we have had to plan a funeral apart in isolation. Very reflective of the times we are in. It has been very, very hard to grieve properly. The human contact that you normally have had just been divided and robbed from us, largely. We were eagerly anticipating what restrictions might be lifted on sunday, especially my mum who is all alone, wakes up alone every morning, has not been out coming i think shes getting a little better gora phobic now with the fact that you cannot see anybody. Think shes getting a little bit agoraphobic. Over the past 24 hours we have discussed how this will affect our ability to grieve as a family. Whilst it is hard to see how it will com pletely whilst it is hard to see how it will completely quell the Emotional Turmoil we are going through at the moment with regards to the emotions we are feeling, i thinkjust that very thought of being able to see my mum properly in a beautiful, Peaceful Place like a park, even though it is two metres apart, which can feel like males sometimes, but it will give us some comfort and it isa it will give us some comfort and it is a step in the right direction. Obviously we realise these are unprecedented times and the government has to balance the Public Health and economic recovery, and i suppose this is a small step in the right direction and allowing us a little bit of time to be together and start that grieving process, which we so wanted to do as a family. Although physically i would still love to hug her. I am sure many people watching this going through that exact same process, missing the ability to help those who just need a hug at the moment, loved ones. And as louise said, you have had these new additions to the family as well. Lauren, anybody who has gone through the process you have been through knows that one of the great joys of have been through knows that one of the greatjoys of having children is to introduce them and share them with the rest of the family, and like so many others you have been robbed of that at the moment . Yeah. Obviously back in october when i found out that i was pregnant, i just thought it would be a nice, normal pregnancy. I hadnt even heard of coronavirus then. Then obviously as it has progressed it has come closer and closer. And now we are kind of looking at when they come out, obviously, they are still in neonatal care at the moment, but when they come out we will not be able to introduce them to anybody and if we do they will be two metres apart, which. I dont really know how to explain it. The excitement and the joy of having a baby is all about having those first cuddles. And the joy of having a baby is all about having those first cuddlesm is the interaction, notjust for us as older people who love to have a cuddle. It is about the babies and the interaction that they get and that feeling of the love and care that feeling of the love and care that a family will provide for them, you know . It has robbed us of it. Gosh. You explain it so well. You made plans to see your mum, then when you get to see the babies as well . I can still go in everyday but i have to liaise with the other families who obviously have babies in theirwith mine, families who obviously have babies in their with mine, we families who obviously have babies in theirwith mine, we had families who obviously have babies in their with mine, we had to be two metres apart. The hospital obviously cant accommodate us all at the same time. Me and the father of the children can obviously come in, but nobody else is allowed to. Yeah. So once they are right, luckily i moved backin once they are right, luckily i moved back in with my mum recently, so she will be able to see them when they come out, but unfortunately nobody else will really be able to. We had just been speaking to the grandmother. What is the reaction you have had, that. What do they make of the new guidelines . What did they think they can do . The reaction in gransnet has been quite mixed. People are. They are concerned about people, not necessarily the guidelines themselves but more about how people will adhere to them. I think theyll worry that the guidelines are open to misinterpretation and some people may wilfully do that, and in doing so will put themselves at risk and benefit older and more Vulnerable People at risk. I think overall they have felt that the lockdown came too late and perhaps has not been quite strict enough. They are really scared that all the sacrifice they have done, they have made so far, they have not seen the grandparents and had been really careful about keeping themselves isolated and have been really lonely as a result, as youll get a few minutes ago said, she wakes up on her own every morning and it is for a long period of time. For lots of People Living on their own there is terrible loneliness. I think people are worried that all the sacrifice they have been making full soul on, for so many weeks, might be in vain. there quite a bit of encouragement going on on gransnet about the fact that at some stage, maybe weeks down the line, hopefully, things will get better . Its not helpfulfor the line, hopefully, things will get better . Its not helpful for people . There is definitely a sense of optimism. I think what they would really like right now, there is a lot of optimism, a lot of support and a lot of ideas on how to maintain contact with grandchildren, loads of ideas on things that micro sending seeds to each other and growing them at the same time and growing them at the same time and monitoring their progress. There are loads of ideas on things like sending seeds to each other. A lot of people come onto the site, they are missing their grandchildren terribly but there is always somebody who will have something to say in support. There is definitely optimism. This evening and overnight that rain, sleet until snow will head southwards, we could see winteriness at the tops of the pennines for a time and then rain showers pushing southwards across england and wales. In england were now being told to stay alert but in wales the official advice remains unchanged stay at home. The Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething joins us now from cardiff. Good morning, really good to speak to this morning. What are the main differences in the guidelines between wales and england the moment . The headline message is an obvious point of difference but theres a difference in terms of travel and in particular about leisure. Uk government saying that people can travel across england for leisure purposes including sunbathing, that isnt the point here in wales, we are really clear you need to stay local. The starting point is stay at home. There are then permissible reasons to leave, exercise being one of them, rather than leisure and thats quite a significant difference, there is real concern here in wales, there will be a number of people moving across the border for leisure purposes or indeed for exercise as well. The past issues around second homes, beauty spots in wales, we normally encourage people to come and see and see and enjoy our beautiful country but at this point in time, its very clear, stay at home and visit whilst later. I think the Prime Minister was specifically asked about visiting second homes in Parliament Yesterday and he said not to do that but on theissue and he said not to do that but on the issue of travelling for exercise or beauty spots, what happens if someone from england wants to go to wales . Someone from england wants to go to wales . What would be the consequences of that . The police will be enforcing the laws of wales. That means if people are travelling significant distances, not staying local, whether wales, england, the police can and will please those regulations. Weve got signs on the road network reminding people to stay at home, stay safe, stay local messages. If people had travelled, we had specific instances of this already, police can stop those people, remind them about the laws, if they dont, they can be cautioned or fined. If they dont, they can be cautioned orfined. This is not a trivial matter, its serious, its serious because all of these things are directed at keeping our people safe, thats the base upon which weve taken decisions, its the basis on which the police will police the laws of wales. We were talking to Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister of scotla nd Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister of scotland in the programme yesterday and she was talking about the consultation between the Scottish Government and westminster. Have you been disappointed, what has that consultation been like because theres been this sort of change of theres been this sort of change of the main messaging over the last few days . But reading about the significant change in the message, evenif significant change in the message, even if it is for england, it has an obvious impact on the unity of message that the four elements of the United Kingdom have had up until that point. It would have been better to have a more open discussion, between the four governments, rather than to read about it in the paper and see it on social media and ive said that consistently and it will surprise the uk government either. Thats why weve said consistently there should be regular, regular, predictable cobra meetings, head of government level, we know when we are going to talk on offer, but we are going to talk on offer, but we are going to talk about, and we dont have a light and rather more cursory discussion when a decision has already been made and well trailed in the Prime Minister has said consistently he wants to be a four nation approach and the way to make that happiness was genuine for nation discussions much earlier between all four governments of the United Kingdom. Weve heard about the r number in the last few weeks. In wales, that is currently around 0. 8. We got lots of questions this morning from People Living in wales asking when they will be able to play golf or tennis are some of those slight easing of the lockdown measures we seen announced in england. What will that number it need to before you can then start to think about making those sorts of decisions, as the Welsh Government . We need to see what the impact of the modest changes weve made is going to be and as you know, we have to review our regulations every three weeks others are pretty regular review period built in the current regime. Well look again at the evidence of whats happened with the evidence of whats happened with the changes weve introduced, the range of things including the r number but also whats happening in practical terms with admissions to hospitals, pressure on the system and we will make more choices and i know some people are impatient for a further easing of lockdown. But the overwhelming response from people has been that they support the cautious approach weve taken and the tone really matters. For people coming into the uk from anywhere in the world other than ireland and france. What are ryanair going to be doing to help make people feel a bit safer, be a bit safer . We heard a bit more detail from him on that saying there will be no cues allowed on board a flight for the toilet, for example. There will be other things, as you go through the process, smartphone based, before you would have to fill ina based, before you would have to fill in a form injuly and august if you are looking to land in an eu country, and country has your details. To Mark International nurses day and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the lady with the lamp were all invited to show our appreciation by shining a light from a window. Our scotland correspondent lorna gordon has been following the journey of one new nurse who cut short her training to join the fight against covid 19. This heading off to start a busy 12. 5 hour nightshift. Becky is one of more than 2000 nursing and midwifery students in scotland who joined the workforce early when the call for extra help was made. Ppe now just another part of the uniform. Patients can only see my eyes so i think the way i speak to people is important. Sometimes we can talk too fast and so you slow yourself down and still have the empathy for patients who only ever see your eyes when you have all that equipment on. Im just walking onto the ward. The patients she is helping to care for have tested positive for covid 19. I think i wasnt mentally prepared for what i was seeing. Patients appear quite well and look healthy but they are clinically unwell. It can be a challenge because the patients can be quite emotional. Some of the shifts have been quite challenging. Today im looking after a cohort of six patients. I have a lot of elderly patients and they will test positive for covid 19 and they are all the different stages in regard to their symptoms. And how they are being managed along with any other conditions they have. One month into into the job and the routine is becoming familiar. As are the highs and lows of her new career. There have been some patients who have left the ward and we clap them out and it is a celebration but there have been patients who have passed away and patients who have passed away without relatives and my first shift, a patient was critically unwell so it was eye opening, i think, one of the biggest things that shocked me is that they do not have relatives with them at the end. Iam heading back i am heading back up to the ward to see my patients. I am on shift four. I am feeling tired but managing well. Halfway through this shift so not long to go. The weekly clap for carers is the constant that has kept them going. Iamon i am on the ward. This is the eight oclock clap. After her long shift it is time to head home. The worry of bringing the disease back to herfamily is always on her mind. They are proud of the role she is playing. You do worry but she has been studying for five years, to get here sojust really proud of her. The children, emily and jack agreed. Iam proud. Becky says she always wanted to be a nurse and feels privileged she has been given the opportunity to help. You just really get a sense of how ha rd you just really get a sense of how hard that workers as well. Lets hear now from two more nurses. Dame donna, how important is it today we remember nurses in particular . The main aim of the celebration today was to raise the profile of nursing. And we can see this pandemic has done that, its really shown the nurses dedication, compassion and agility and commitment and thats been present all the way through this pandemic. Give us an idea, talk about the fact that theres this clapping taking place on thursday, tonight is going to be a little bit different, give us the picture, but being a nurse means to you, why is it important . I mean, obviously its an amazing thing to be able to give ca re an amazing thing to be able to give care to people who need it, when they are at their most vulnerable. Being able to do that is a really amazing thing, when families cannot get to do that themselves. amazing thing, when families cannot get to do that themselves. I think i may have inadvertently called gyimah, do apologise thats ok. Tell us what work has been like for you, so many of you under pressure, how has it changed your daily life, what has been going on with coronavirus. I may have inadvertently called you mark. Weve made quite significant changes to the department. Quite suddenly. We expanded our department, within the space of a couple of hours. Just to respond to the dramatic increase in patients that were coming in with covid19. Life at work has been pretty tricky, just working through the problems, there and then. Less so managing to plan ahead as much, due to the demand coming through. Donna, we are celebrating nurses every week which is helpful and its great to be acknowledged in that way but i was listening to two nurses speaking on a podcast last week and they were talking about how they feel that some of the things theyve seen and their colleagues have seen and witnessed over the last few weeks, they feel once we are the other side of this crisis, there will be a real issue with post Traumatic Stress disorder. Its about some of your members have been discussing as well . I can see matt nodding along. I can imagine the effect that this crisis will have, some nurses will be traumatised and i know i myself, when i went back to the front line in the nightingale hospital, it was very traumatic to see the number of patients and ventilation. Some people will have traumatic experiences of being burnt out but on the other hand, weve given the British Public the opportunity to see the incredible work that nurses do and the dedication that theyve shown an professionalism and the difference we can make so im expecting there will be a huge interest in my profession going forward. When this pandemic is over. Thats very interesting. Donna, do you think perceptions about nursing ive kind of had a fundamental shift . People have always loved nurses but do you think its changed as well . have always loved nurses but do you think its changed as well . I do. I think, for once, theyve seen nurses step up to the plate, theyve seen the complex environment we can work in and theyve seen the highs and lows of nursing, had been on the television all the way through this pandemic so i think that people have a real sense of who we are and what we do. Theyve seen that its a variety of people that carry out the task of nursing, how diverse we are, how important our skills are so im very proud of my profession today. Matt, i mentioned to don you were nodding along when she was talking about some of the traumatic things that nurses have seen. What you trying to do mentally, as an individual and with your colleagues at the moment, are you trying to focus on the positives, is this something you will come back to comedy thing, once we are the other side of the virus . Very much so. There is so many positive things that come out of this pandemic, the teamwork. Do you think you will come back to this, once we are the other side. In the department, we are providing clinical psychologists for people to sit and have discussions with, we really started that work weeks and weeks and weeks ago, to allow people to discuss and talk about how they are feeling and whats happening. You work in the Emergency Department, dont you . We have talked about people not may be coming infor have talked about people not may be coming in for their other emergencies, are you saying that change again . Theres definitely an increase of non covid 19 at the moment, obviously we have been open the whole time to anyone who needs Emergency Care it was pretty tricky early on with the numbers of covid 19 people going through however we are still here and we are available for anyone who needs Emergency Care finally, donna, to come back to you, you talked about the encouragement that their nights have been, i dont know if you look outside your house tonight, will it put a smile on your face to see a lamp or a light on in many houses up and down the street . Yes, it will, i think its really, really important that we acknowledge, the lamp signifies Florence Nightingale who did so much but started our profession. It will bea but started our profession.
