Mrjohnson, whos 55, was admitted to hospital with persistent symptoms of covid 19 on sunday evening. The foreign secretary, domninic raab, is now standing in for him. Our Political Correspondent chris mason reports. The man tasked with steering the country and the government through a crisis without parallel is this morning still here in intensive care at st thomass hospital in Central London. The Prime Minister has been attempting to shield us from the very worst consequences of a virus that has now left him stricken. The main thing that comes across with boris all the time is this irrepressible optimism that we will get through and thats what he projects and what he believes, what he tells himself co nsta ntly. And thats what he was like about a week ago when he knew he had the virus. He thought hed get through it and britain would get through it and we would all be fine. This clearly shows just how serious it is. This was the Prime Minister last thursday joining the applause for healthcare staff. Thanks, nhs, thank you its now doctors and nurses less than a mile from downing street in hospital helping the Prime Minister beat the coronavirus. And so this man, the foreign secretary, dominic raab, has been asked to deputise for mrjohnson where necessary. Theres an incredibly Strong Team Spirit behind the Prime Minister and making sure we get all of the plans the Prime Minister has instructed us to deliver are implemented as soon as possible and that is the way we will bring the whole country through the coronavirus challenge we face right now. The worsening of the Prime Ministers condition has prompted reaction from around the world, including the white house. I also want to send best wishes to a very good friend of mine and a friend to our nation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Americans are all praying for his recovery, hes been a really good friend, something really special. Strong, resolute, doesnt quit, does not give up. Buckingham palace said the queen was being kept informed about the condition of her 14th Prime Minister. Of her 14th Prime Minister. The capacity of every branch of government was already stretched in a way no one could possibly have imagined just a few months ago. And for now at least, its leader is sidelined too. Chris mason, bbc news at westminster. Buckingham palace says the queen has been informed about the Prime Ministers condition and World Leaders have expressed their sympathy. The archbishop of canterbury, justin welby, invited everyone tojoin him in praying for borisjohnson and his loved ones. The former uk home secretary, amber rudd shared her support, saying she received a light hearted and positive response from the Prime Minister when she last spoke to him. Theresa mayjoined herfellow mps, tweeting that her thoughts and prayers are with borisjohnson and his family as he continues to receive treatment in hospital. Across the political divide, the newly appointed labour leader, keir starmer said all the countrys thoughts are with the Prime Minister, and first minister Nicola Sturgeon says she is sending him every good wish. In a moment well speak to our Political Correspondent helen catt in downing street. First, lets hearfrom john mcmanus, who is outside st thomass hospital in Central London. John, its early. We know you went into intensive care last night. Saint thomas has to intensive care units in last night at seven oclock, the Prime Minister was given oxygen and given one of those units, so he could be close to a ventilator if needed because if mr johnson needed a ventilator, it would mean his condition had deteriorated and also that he would be sedated because they have the tube is inserted into their throats. Thats not the moment but statistics show that so far, around two thirds of coronavirus patients who do need to go to intensive care are eventually put onto a ventilator. Thats not happening right now, specialists in the icu will be looking after mrjohnson, making sure his organs are working, that they have enough oxygen while his immune system fights the virus. Helen catt is on downing street. I suppose the important question which will be asking various ministers later, what happens in terms of running the country at the moment . We are in a different place than we were this time yesterday. The message from downing street was the borisjohnson was very much leading the government response, getting papers, talking to collea g u es getting papers, talking to colleagues but that is not the message this morning. We know instead that dominic raab, the foreign secretary who holds the role of first secretary of state has been asked to deputise mrjohnson, and thatis asked to deputise mrjohnson, and that is not a move that any Prime Minister would willingly want to ta ke minister would willingly want to take so we are at the point where there really wouldnt have been another option. The plan, the strategy is borisjohnsons and its his instructions that they are working to carry out over the course of this week. The other thing to go about in westminster, dealing with the fallout of Boris Johnson about in westminster, dealing with the fallout of borisjohnson being taken out of circulation as the head of the government but there are many thoughts in westminster turning to the concern for a colleague. This is something people work with, and imagine the comments from theresa may, the labour leader, keir starmer, with all the National Leaders in the uk adding thoughts of his speedy recovery. Thank you for the moment, helen. Well be talking to the michael gove at 6 30. Hes the Cabinet Office minister and a long time friend, and occasional rival, of borisjohnson. The japanese government is expected to declare a state of emergency in tokyo, osaka and five other regions in an attempt to stem the spread of coronavirus. Japan has had relatively few covid i9 deaths so far but there are concerns about the rapid increase of cases in urban areas. Our correspondent Rupert Wingfield hayes is in tokyo. Rupert, thank you for speaking to us this morning. What is the very latest from where you are . Well, the latest from where you are . Well, the latest is in that introduction as you said, things are starting to pick up particularly in tokyo and osaka but here in tokyo over the last week, we have seen the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus really starting to climb quite rapidly in the graph is looking like london and new york, two or three weeks ago so there was a real fear now, ive spoken to specialists here and we are really on the verge of a major out, they say, if something is not done. There is mounting pressure on the government to do something in last night, by minister shinzo abe said, im preparing to announce a statement of emergency and will formally do that tonight. Prime minister. He will come out and formally declare a state of emergency for these seven prefectures including greater tokyo. That will give the government some powers to order business is to close and to advise people to stay at home. Japanconstitution doesnt allow lock down is like in parts of europe so it will be an advisory and there wont be sanctions for people who break those advisories but this isa who break those advisories but this is a pretty, the japanese people are pretty law abiding so we do expect people to Pay Attention and stay at home. What a career she had. Absolutely. Lets take a look at todays papers. The news that the Prime Minister has been moved into intensive care leads all of todays front pages. The times reports it has been told by a doctor at st thomas that the Prime Minister needed four litres of oxygen, which is below the usual threshold for admittance to intensive care. The daily mirror describes the situation as a fight for life for the Prime Minister. The guardian simply leads with johnson taken into intensive care after symptoms worsen and also marks the fact that the number of people who have died in the uk because of coronavirus has exceeded 5,000. The daily mailfront page reads now stricken boris taken to intensive care, and describes his second in command, foreign secretary dominic raab, as a crisis stand in. Its notjust uk papers leading on the story. The german newspaper bild features a front page story about the Prime Minister. It also claims that borisjohnson required four litres of oxygen whilst in hospital yesterday. On that Boris Johnson on that borisjohnson story, we will be speaking to numerous people through the morning. M. , and michael gove at 6 30am. And you are speaking to the first minister of wales. Absolutely. So much to speak about, with the implications of what this might mean for everybody, for all of us. Lets look at the inside pages. This is a rather nice one. What has been really striking over the past few weeks is that we are doing television differently, and lots of different ways. Seeing into peoples houses for the first time, you know, it is really. I love studying peoples bookshelves. Yes, here we go. Look, this is camilla inside her house, inside her study. Homely chaos is how the daily mail have called this. The duchess of cornwall, working from home. A slightly chaotic. Well, i dont think it is that chaotic, it doesnt look anything like my bookshelf, it is very well ordered. There are all the lovely photographs of various different things. The tennis balls for the dogs, greetings cards, which cost £3. A couple of what looked like not quite chewed biros. It has been a bit of a level, hasnt it . We have been looking inside everybodys houses. So there is another one, the duchess of cornwall in her study. And we have been doing football focus from my house. Have you ordered all your books . |j focus from my house. Have you ordered all your books . I took some of the books out because i wanted to see more intelligent than i actually am. People are fascinated by what is behind you. I am sure that sally will be talking about this later, lots of sport across the back pages this morning. Not many pictures to show you, but liverpool in this u turn over the furlough bid they had, they say they have reversed this decision and they are truly sorry coming to the wrong conclusion. They also talk about pep guardiola. It was announced yesterday by man city but his mother had died in catalonia. When he does return to the club he will actually be discussing taking a serious salary cut to try to help the club deal with things. And we need a bit of light relief. One bit of light relief for you, ok . This is about a toilet, i can show you this picture ofa toilet, i can show you this picture of a toilet, which has got. Can you see that tiny little camera in the toilet . There is a reason for this and it is a good health reason, before you start to panic over your brea kfast. Before you start to panic over your breakfast. I am panicking and i havent even had breakfast. This lavatory identifies who is using it in order to then analyse your various samples to check for health issues. Now, initially the plan was. Iam issues. Now, initially the plan was. I am trying to describe this as best i can. The plan was that they would put a fingerprint sensor on the lever. Then i found that quite a few people, i dont know why, flush the toilet for others. So therefore you are not necessarily linked to the actual thing you had left in the toilet. But this actually identifies your face and it can also identify you from the shape of your bottom. There are so many things about this but are wrong. But it says it can analyse and check the things like irritable bowel syndrome, prostate cancer, kidney failure, all these sorts of things. Check your protein levels in your blood levels. And it could be the future. So there you go. Want to think about. You very much. 6 18pm. Lets ta ke think about. You very much. 6 18pm. Lets take you back to the main story this morning. The Prime Minister is currently receiving treatment at an nhs intensive care unit, which is a specialist ward set up to provide close monitoring for patients who require one on one care. To help us understand more about the treatment patients receive in icu, were nowjoined by daniele bryden, vice dean for the faculty of intensive care medicine. Thank you very much for spending a bit of time with us on breakfast this morning. First of all, i suppose, what would be the difference, essentially, between an icu department and the treatment you would receive elsewhere in the hospital . Good morning. The treatment in intensive care unit is characterised by two things that make it very different. One of which is the high degree of training and specialism of the staff that are there and the high ratio of staff that you have looking after a on the intensive care unit. A person. And the ability we have an icu to monitor somebody very closely and at a very detailed level. So it really isa a very detailed level. So it really is a very high degree of care that we have been able to provide somebody. We were hearing about the amount of oxygen the Prime Minister was requiring yesterday. Is that the determining factor about movement into intensive care . Particularly with coronavirus . Whether or not you can get that oxygen into your body . Within an intensive care unit, and not commenting directly on the Prime Minister, there can be a number of reasons why somebody might go into an intensive care unit. One of them canjust be an intensive care unit. One of them can just be to monitor the an intensive care unit. One of them canjust be to monitor the person or it can be to give them additional treatment, like oxygen. One of the things we know with coronavirus in general is that people do respond well to oxygen and do need to have oxygen, on a number of occasions. And so it is important that somebody is put in an environment where they can have the right amount of oxygen that they need for their disease at that they need for their disease at that point. Obviously by the nature of the word intensive, the ratio of staff to patients, i would imagine, is different, in an icu. It cannot also be the case that there are specific types of drugs which are only available to patients in intensive care . But can it also be the case. Yes, that is true of an intensive care unit as well, but because of the way we are able to monitor people very closely and use devices and equipment to monitor closely, we have more flexibility in terms of how we deliver the drugs to the patients. Some drugs can only be given in an intensive care unit, and some drugs like oxygen can be given in different ways in an intensive ca re in different ways in an intensive care unit. Again, we totally appreciate you coming on to speak you cant speak about the Prime Minister individually, because you do not know what he is going through, but in terms of that movement from receiving oxygen to then being moved onto a ventilator, what is the determining factor with regards to when you might make that decision . Because at the moment we understand the Prime Minister is conscious and receiving oxygen, but not on a ventilator . What we know from the covid 19 experience in general, and particularly as things are developing in the uk, is that the vast majority of people are able to be treated with oxygen, and that can be either at a ward level or it can be either at a ward level or it can be either at a ward level or it can be on an intensive care unit. So it is not unusual for people suffering from covid 19 at the moment to be receiving oxygen, and then as i said, depending on other conditions that people may have, they may well have other treatment on the intensive care unit, with a ventilator. I think some of the appreciation of the intensive care we have seen recently has been about discussion of ventilators, but it is far more complex and sophisticated than that, and there are far more treatments we are able to offer. So it is not just treatments we are able to offer. So it is notjust about treatments we are able to offer. So it is not just about whether or treatments we are able to offer. So it is notjust about whether or not you have a ventilator. Butjust ask you have a ventilator. Butjust ask you specifically about the use of a ventilator, as i understand it again, please call me if im being ignorant, you were to move on to a ventilator you need to be sedated . Is that the case . The vast majority of people, when they go into a ventilator, do need to have medicines to help them tolerate the tube that to go in the windpipe to help with the ventilation. But as things settle and improve, but medication can be gradually withdrawn, and the person that is on a ventilator can be woken up on the ventilator, and that is part of the routine practice on a day to day basis anyway. Within intensive care. So it does require some drugs to be given initially when somebody goes on to given initially when somebody goes ontoa given initially when somebody goes on to a ventilator, but it does not necessarily mean that anybody on a ventilator would then be receiving those drugs continuously. appreciate it is hard to give general answers about this, because each case is a very busy, but is there a sort of general timeframe you can give us for each of the patients in intensive care, how much time they would spend there . Even though there are various treatments you might receive while you are there . Within the uk we know the average amount of time one stays in intensive care unit is five days. But isnt average for conditions and all people. Some people who go from monitoring, particularly around the time of surgery orjust to make sure that their treatment is progressing well may only stayed 2448 hrs in an intensive care unit, and some people might stay longer. 24 or 48 hours. So it is hard to be precise because it can be such a variable amount of time somebody might spend. But it is perfectly feasible somebody might spend a very short period of time in intensive care. And just finally, we will be speaking to some of his cabinet collea g u es speaking to some of his cabinet colleagues later in the programme, you know, he has got a very importantjob you know, he has got a very important job to be you know, he has got a very importantjob to be doing at the moment, and up until yesterday he was still receiving government papers. I am sure that will change now he is in intensive care. But if he is able to come out of intensive care, how long could then that rehabilitation process be, before he would be able to return to normal work, if there is such a thing is that . Well, i am not able to comment on the Prime Minister at all, because i am not aware of what condition he is actually being treated for at the moment, but in general terms, when people have spent a period of time on intensive care, they would then go to the normal ward and continue treatment on their normal ward, the foregoing home. So that would be the expected pattern of recovery for anybody who spends time in intensive care. We really appreciate your time today. That was Daniela Bryden speaking to us that was Daniela Bryden speaking to us from sheffield, the vice dean of the faculty of intensive care medicine. A real interesting insight into what sort of gather premised be receiving at the moment. Absolutely. It is confidential, isnt it, but he is the Prime Minister. So much reaction to that on the programme this morning. We will be speaking to michael gove, former conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith, and so lindsay hoyle, speaker of the house of commons. And as always, at 6 30 a. M. , we have a gp on, so if you have any questions this morning you would like us to ask, we have some already, but if you want to send them in, please do. Finding baby supplies on the supermarket shelves is a challenge for many families at the moment. This has become more difficult for parents in hartlepool, who rely on nappy donations from a local baby bank, which has closed. Now, one of its volunteers is going from house to house delivering to women in need. The bbcs north of england correspondent, fiona trott went to meet her. Another busy day family. For emily. Dozens of mums have called her and need her help. Inside this container are things they cant find or struggle to afford. Hundreds of nappies, toys, clothes, all donated to the baby bank that emily set up. It works like a food bank and in this town, some parents cant manage without it. At the moment i have had to ask all my volunteers to stay home because of Health Reasons or because they have Young Children, so it is just because they have Young Children, so it isjust me, because they have Young Children, so it is just me, trying to make as many families across hartlepool as i can. Hi, how is it going . First stop is charlies house. She has an underlying medical condition and is self isolating. She is looking after her babies on but her daughter is having to live elsewhere. Baby son. It is heartbreaking. Ijust wa nt to son. It is heartbreaking. Ijust want to be able to hold her, to kiss her. Sorry. Its breaking my heart. If it wasnt for people like emily, thenjosie would have to go without because i wouldnt have another way to have access to data. Weve lost our Service Space because we currently use our buildings. We lost our community feel. Cant use our buildings. Now werejust our community feel. Cant use our buildings. Now were just trying to reach as many isolated and lonely families as we can and just do what we can. I suffer with anxiety and depression, so being a big supermarket isnt my kind of thing. And i think there is that fear there now that there is a virus going about, and you have got a child, that you dont want to leave your door and go to the shops. So the baby bank have been brilliant and given me the things that i cant go out and get myself. The demand has just been incredible. My son is asthmatic and obviously we are concerned about him and my husband took a long, hard look at it and said, should i still do this . And we decided i had to, because no one else is doing it. Other provisions arent in place for families, else is doing it. Other provisions arent in place forfamilies, they arent in place forfamilies, they are not in place for tiny babies. People are looking at elderly but they are not looking at pregnant women, they are not looking at how scary it is to be 30 weeks pregnant and be told to confine yourself for 12 weeks when you havent finished your shopping. How positive are you about the future . We see a problem and we find our own solution because we are used to being forgotten by the government and we are used to being left on our own. We are not pa rt being left on our own. We are not part of any authority, so we are used to grafting and coming up with our own solution. So that is why we will, because we always have and we a lwa ys will, because we always have and we always will. Fiona trott, bbc news, hartlepool. Iam i am trying to get a sneak preview of carols weather. I think it looks 0k, of carols weather. I think it looks ok, carol . Probably not a very good description . Well, it is not bad at all, in any sense. Off toa off to a chilly start. Freezing or just below, some a touch of frost. Some patchy mist and fog, particularly across southern scotland, wales and southern england. That will lift quite readily. For most of the uk we are looking at some sunny spells once again. As always, there is an exception to the rule. That is across the north west. You can see the isobars are still quite close together, still a brisk breeze here, and with weather fronts not too far away we will see a buildup in the cloud. Yesterday was a slightly cooler day. But through the daily temperatures will be up on yesterday and similarly so into tomorrow. Tomorrow could actually be the warmest day of the week so far. As we head through the course of the day, they will be lots of sunshine. We are starting with pockets of cloud across north west england, south west scotland, south west wales, for example. But on the whole most of us will stay dry. A bit more cloud at times across the Channel Islands and south western england. That could produce the odd shower. And these white circles indicate the average wind speed, so brisk winds across the north west. Here we will have cloud and occasionally spots of rain. Temperatures up to 20 degrees in london. If you are going out for your exercise today and you have an allergy to tree pollen, the levels are high across england and wales. Through this evening and overnight, a bit more cloud around the last night. We have also got our weather front dancing across bits of scotla nd front dancing across bits of scotland and northern ireland. For a time, this rain will be heavy and persistent. They will also be clear skies and some patchy mist and fog forming, especially across parts of england. Not as cold a night as the onejust gone. Tomorrow england. Not as cold a night as the one just gone. Tomorrow night we begin with our weather front. Still with this rain in it first thing in the morning, the rain turning increasingly patchy through the day. More cloud across scotland and northern ireland. Brighter skies following on biden after a brighter start with sunny skies across england and wales, through the day we will see more cloud coming in, turning this the sunshine hazy. Turning this the sunshine hazy. Turning the sunshine hazy. Here too we might catch the odd heavy shower which could be thundering. As a result yesterday i was telling you the temperatures on wednesday could get up to 24, more likely to be 22 or23, if we get up to 24, more likely to be 22 or 23, if we catch one of those showers. Much cooler in the north, looking at 80 degrees as your maximum. Then on thursday, that week when front is still with us, producing all this cloud. Further south we are still looking at sunny skies, but it will feel cooler down the east coast and along the north sea coastline. Temperatures 21 22. And if you are wondering about easter weekend, it will turn cooler and they will be some showers and we spots of rain at times. It is 31 minutes past six. This is breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. Well bring you all the latest news and sport in a moment, but also on breakfast this morning. Thats all coming up a little bit later, but first a summary of the main news from bbc news. The Prime Minister has been given oxygen while in intensive care at an nhs hospital in london, where he is being treated for coronavirus. Boris johnson, seen here applauding frontline workers on thursday evening, was admitted to St Thomas Hospital on sunday night. When his symptoms worsened yesterday he was moved to intensive care be closer to a ventilator. The foreign secretary, dominic raab, will stand in for him in government. Theres an incredibly Strong Team Spirit behind the Prime Minister and making sure that we get all of the plans that the Prime Minister has instructed us to deliver to get them implemented as soon as possible and thats the way well bring the whole country through the coronavirus challenge that we face right now. World leaders have expressed their concern for the Prime Minister. The archbishop of canterbury, justin welby, invited everyone tojoin him in praying for borisjohnson and his loved ones. The former home secretary, amber rudd shared her support, saying she received a light hearted and positive response from the Prime Minister when she last spoke to him. Theresa mayjoined herfellow mps tweeting that her thoughts and prayers are with borisjohnson and his family as he continues to receive treatment in hospital. Across the political divide, the newly appointed labour leader, keir starmer said all the countrys thoughts are with the Prime Minister. And Scottish First minister Nicola Sturgeon says she is sending him every good wish messages of support for the Prime Minister have also been echoed across europe. Irish taoiseach, leo varadkar said borisjohnson is in his thoughts, tweeting we wish him a speedy recovery and a rapid return to health. French president , Emmanuel Macron said he is sending his support to the british people at this difficult moment. And german chancellor Angela Merkel wished borisjohnson much strength and a speedy recovery. 439 people died in hospital from the effects of coronavirus on monday. Overall there are 51,608 confirmed cases in the uk and the total number of people to die from the virus has reached 5,373. This number does not account for people who have died in the community or in a care home. People who volunteered to support the nhs during the outbreak will begin reporting for duty today. They will deliver food and medicines, drive patients to appointments and phone the isolated. 750,000 people signed up to the governments call for volunteers when the scheme launched, three times the original target. We will talk about that a little bit later. This is an unusual and unsettling time for many of us and it can sometimes feel like we have more questions than answers. Well, were doing our best to try to get to the bottom of some of your concerns and were joined now from liverpool by doctor rob barnett. Very good morning to you. Thank you very much indeed forjoining us. So many people will be worried, concerned to hear that the Prime Minister has spent a night in intensive, but he is in incredibly skilled, good hands, isnt he . He is and clearly he is in the right place for the symptoms that he has got at the moment. This will certainly increase anxiety amongst a lot of people who may have mild symptoms worrying, i suspect, people who may have mild symptoms worrying, isuspect, about people who may have mild symptoms worrying, i suspect, about what is going to happen to them. You make a very good point there. At what point should people be forming 111 thinking that actually they are no longer mild symptoms . If symptoms have continued as we saw with mr johnson, with his temperature being up, having a calf and getting breathless and its the difficulty in breathing which is the real worry, then that is the time that they need to be seeking help. There is no point sitting there just hoping everything is going to get better. It is much better to seek advice and then we will take it from there. I know you obviously are dealing with patients with this all the time. Give us a sense, most people recover after seven days or so . Well, for the vast majority of people, it is a mild illness and we expect people to be a lot better after seven days, if not completely better, but clearly we are seeing a proportion of people whose symptoms do continue and if they are continuing beyond ten, 11 days, then, again, it is important that they check in with 111 just to see what they should be doing next. suppose also the question for people who are concerned and treating themselves or have somebody ill at home is what should you be doing . U nfortu nately, home is what should you be doing . Unfortunately, it is reallyjust looking after your symptoms and if you have a temperature, its taking paracetamol to try to bring your temperature down, it is keeping yourself hydrated, making sure you are drinking. Lots of people dont necessarily feel like eating if they are unwell, but it is important that you keep your fluid are unwell, but it is important that you keep yourfluid intake up. The other thing we found is that people are other thing we found is that people a re often other thing we found is that people are often a lot better if they are sitting up rather than lying down because that helps to improve the oxygen saturation in their body, so there are things like this they should be looking to do. Ok, thats good. I have lots of questions from various different people and i will just go through a few of them if we can. These are kind of general questions as well as some specific ones. This is from jennifer, i am worried when people are jogging they could be passing on the virus in droplets from their breath. Had i protect myself while exercising . One of the important things and a message that has been very clear is about social distancing. It is about keeping apart from people and the distance we are told is two metres andi distance we are told is two metres and i think that if you are that sort of distance away or further, then the chances of getting anything is remote. When they are talking about droplet spread, really you have to be within two or three feet, so if you are six or seven feet, two metres away, then that should protect you. Yes. Malcolm says, what are the rules on car sharing going to and from essential work with collea g u es to and from essential work with colleagues because in a car, you are pretty close . You are, and really the idea is that you should not be close to anyone at all. If you do have to have two people in the car, i would suggest that one is sitting in the front and one is sitting in the back and that way you are keeping your distance as much as possible. That sounds like a sensible proportion. This is from mark, he says my mother is 91, in very good health with no Underlying Health conditions. He says is it safe for her to go for a short walk as long as she follows social distancing advice . It is really difficult. The advice is for someone over 70 or who has an underlying disease, they really should stay in, they should stay at home. They need to keep themselves away from others andi to keep themselves away from others and i think that is really the most sensible thing to do. I suspect if she can go for a walk and she does keep away from others, it will be all right, but actually, you know, staying within the environment of their own house is probably the most sensible thing to do. Another couple of questions, this is from helen, she says i am a mother of three and Breast Feeding a nine month old. What would happen if i were to catch the virus . Would i or should i still breast feed and how do i protect my baby . That is a real worry for people with young babies. As far as im aware, at the moment is the advice is that one would continue Breast Feeding. There is a lot of protection that comes through their breastmilk, but i think that the most important thing is that if you are not feeling well, you speak to your own gp are not feeling well, you speak to yourown gp and are not feeling well, you speak to your own gp and you get advice in relation to your own personal circumstances as to what is the most sensible thing to do. And it is worth saying as well that gps are there and they are still dealing with things that are not coronavirus. We are open. Yesterday in my own practice, the doctors actually dealt with 58 phone calls. We saw a few patients actually in the surgery for various reasons. We have been dealing with patients who have been dealing with patients who have contacted us through what we call e mail consultants but are receptionists out there and they have been busier, i think, than they have been busier, i think, than they have ever have been. There are three in our practice who are on the phone co nsta ntly ta king calls in our practice who are on the phone constantly taking calls from patients with all sorts of queries, so, yes, we are there and we are there to help. There is also caution there to help. There is also caution there because of people do have problems, they should still call the doctor, shouldnt they, if they have something that is serious . We are there. We will take calls, we will triage and where necessary we will invite patients in, but we are very careful as to who we invite in and we ta ke careful as to who we invite in and we take precautions not only for the patient to is coming in but for the Health Care Workers, the doctors who are seeing them and anyone coming to our surgery, the first thing we do is give them a mask to protect them as well as to protect ourselves. On the mask point, jay says do we need to wear masks while going out to the supermarket . It is a really difficult question, that. I believe that it difficult question, that. I believe thatitis difficult question, that. I believe that it is probably safer to wear a mask. I think that if we all wore masks, it would just help in terms of that droplet spread. In supermarkets i know that we are trying to maintain social distancing, but unfortunately not eve ryo ne distancing, but unfortunately not everyone does that, so i think it is probably better to be safe than not. Thank you so much for answering these questions. Another one from john and im sure a lot of people will be saying this, i suffer from hay fever, how do i know the symptoms are not coronavirus . Someone who suffers from hay fever will be getting the same symptoms which are usually, you know, itchy eyes, may be a runny nose, a dry throat. They will not be having a temperature, they will not be having a cough that persists that we are tending to see with coronavirus and so if you are getting symptoms of hay fever, then our advice would be that you take the medication that you would normally take and see how you would normally take and see how you get on with that. And i suppose, you get on with that. And i suppose, you know, so many people are waking up you know, so many people are waking up this morning and hearing that the Prime Minister is ill. It does not matter who you are, this disease, anybody can catch it. Well, we have seen across the boards anyone can catch it. Unfortunately, we have had Health Care Workers who have succumbs, doctors, nurses who have succumbed. Just anyone clearly, the Prime Minister, we are all human and u nfortu nately we Prime Minister, we are all human and unfortunately we do not have any sort of defence against this yet. Hopefully a vaccine will be produced in due course, but im afraid we all have the same frailties and problems. Thank you very much for your calm, clear advice. Thank you. I took various notes during that, so much to take in from our experts. Just give you some news coming to us, the latest news on the Prime Ministers condition, according to two sources close to the Prime Minister, has been no change in his condition overnight, so that means he is still in intensive care at st thomass hospital, still conscious and receiving oxygen but importantly he is not on a ventilator. There has been no change, the very latest in a Prime Ministers condition at st thomass hospital overnight. Coming up to quarter to seven. Sally, there has been a bit of an about turn at liverpool, has . Liverpool seem to have made a big mistake couple of days ago but they have now changed their mind and apologised. They announced a couple of days ago that they were going to furlough their non payment nonplaying staff and put them on to the coronavirus Job Retention scheme. The club said they would find alternative ways to operate while there are no football matches. They were admitting they got it wrong. Tottenham, newcastle, bournemouth and norwich continue to furlough their non playing staff. Liverpool had faced huge criticism for reaching what theyve now called their wrong conclusion. I think whats really important at the moment is that there seems to be a real desire, i would say, from irresponsible politicians to put football and footballers at the centre of this discussion and debate and act as though their behaviour needs to be monitored or anything like that. In that context, i think liverpools timing was all out because it was a real moment where even people who were close to football, who loved football, wished liverpool hadnt done that. Youve gotjordan henderson trying to pull funds together and Something Like this comes out and you just feel a bit like youre not helping the general mood here to be honest with you, so i think all of that collects into a lot of people thinking, you know what, this is wrong. A lot of people made that Crystal Clear quickly and i think that led to a change in tack. Organisers of the open Golf Championship say it was with a heavy heart that they decided to cancel this years event due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was due to take place in mid july at royal st georges in kent, which will now stage the tournament in 2021. The other three majors have all been moved to later in the year. Last yea rs runner up Tommy Fleetwood believes its the right decision. This is clearly a sign of how severe the times are with it being such a big event in our calendar. I think the important thing to sort of take from it is that were not. You know, the 149th open is going to take place. Its not completely cancelled, itsjust going to happen next year and i think its important to look at it that way and, yeah, its a shame, you know. The summer is kind of. Events like wimbledon, the open, you know, the summer is getting less and less, but, you not, theres a lot going on and its important to keep a realistic view on it. The former f1 World Champion nico rosberg has praised his former Team Mercedes and the sport for playing their part in the battle against coronavirus. Several breathing aids have been developed to keep patients out of intensive care in just one of many efforts to help the world fight the pandemic. I think its so spectacular how formula 1 has been able to show in this situation how incredibly skilful they are in their engineering and in their technological development. Theyre second to none. The speed at which the team, mercedes, have developed a breathing aid and aside from that seven of the uk teams have come together in a project called project pitlane where theyre now helping to develop ventilators. Thats really awesome, that my sport is able to help in such a difficult time like this to such an extent. So many talented minds, talented engineers in that sport working at the moment to try to do their bit. Back to you two. Yes, absolutely. Sadly, thank you very much. We will see you in a bit. It is 648, Tuesday Morning. Coronavirus has almost brought the Property Market to a standstill. People have been trying to finalise a house and have been putting it on hold for weeks or months. It really difficult. Ninas been looking at where people stand if they are looking to buy and sell, or if theyre waiting for a sale to go through. I guess its a tense time anyway for people when youre buying or selling but particularly right now. Good morning, such an anxious time if youre looking to buy or sell a property. Two weeks now since the Prime Minister told us to shut public spaces and only go out if necessary and, unsurprisingly, theres been a 70 reduction in new property sale is agreed. At the moment, some guidance is out there from the government. Lets have a look at it. If your house is not yet on the market youre going to have to wait. You cant have an estate agent come round for a valuation or to take pictures. If your property is already on the market you can continue to advertise it, but shouldnt allow viewings. One estate agent told us theyve had an offer accepted based solely on a virtual tour theyve created, but that will be subject to a physical inspection when the crisis is over. If an offer has been made on your property you can accept it, but be aware the process might take some time. There might be problems obtaining searches because local Authority Offices are working at reduced capacity. Some solicitors firms are furloughing their staff. Just getting documents signed off will obviously take more time. Picking up keys is difficult because of social distancing rule. This is scott. Hes in a chain, looking to sell, and then buy in lancashire. Before the outbreak it seemed straightforward, but his lender, and his buyers lender have changed their terms. Because of the things that are going on with covid 19 at the moment, the valuation industry is no longer able to send people out two properties to do physical valuations, they have to do physical valuations, they have to do digital ones which are less reliable for them, so therefore theyve changed their loan to value amount to 80 which means i have to come up with a 20 deposit. The buyer, who was taking on this place, im in direct contact with him through a messaging service, and we are very open and frank and talking to each other about the issues we are having. He is with a totally Different Bank having the same issues im having commissaries making it very clear to me that is still very much once has sail to go through. Best of luck to scott. You might be further down the line than scott, having exchanged contracts and being set to move. If the property is vacant the government says you can move in as long as you follow social distancing rules. We spoke to one removal firm in manchester that employs 70 people told us that its virtually impossible to complete removals whule keeping two metres apart and so lots of removal firms have suspended their work. Imagine moving a washing machine while keeping the social distancing rules. There are still people in the house, the government says you must come to whats called an amicable alternative, so one estate agent told us thats a system whereby you can complete contracts but allow the seller to stay in the property under licence, essentially as a tenant. When the crisis is over they are obliged to move out. When it comes to your mortgage, banks and Building Societies have agreed to extend mortgages for those of exchange for up mortgages for those of exchange for up to three months. Lenders say that if the borrowers financial circumstances change significantly during the three month period, the lender will work with them to find a suitable outcome. There is a mortgage holiday up to three months for anybody whose income is been affected by the coronavirus. A lot of information there and its very confusing for a lot of people in the chain are looking to buy or sell at the moment. We will speak to some experts over the next hour or so so please do get in touch if you have any questions and we will do our very best to answer them. Im sure lots of people well. Nina, thank you very much. In ordinary times, couples spend on average two and a half hours together each day, according to research by the open university. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. Mungojerry mungo jerry sprang to mungojerry sprang to mind there, damn, idont mungojerry sprang to mind there, damn, i dont know why. Good morning, everybody. We got some patchy mist and fog around which will lift quite readily but it will be dry for in sunny as we go through today. Dominated by High Pressure but one little glance of the north west show with these isobars close together, brisk breeze, a weather front not too far away, which will introduce more cloud in some spots of rain at times. For most of us, its going to be a dry day, sunny spells, some of the sunshine turning hazy through the afternoon with a bit more cloud. The odd shower across the Channel Islands and South West England, but that will be about it. These white circles indicate the average wind strength, so the gusts across the north west will be a little bit higher than this. Temperatures up a couple of degrees and where they were yesterday, nine in lerwick, in london. If you are stepping out for exercise today, and you have an allergy to tree pollen, worth mentioning that across england and wales the levels are high today. As we head on through this evening and overnight, our weather front in the north west makes more progress sinking south eastwards taking some heavy and persistent rain with it at times. More cloud around tonight, as well, so not as cold as just gone but we could see patchy mist and fog around. Tomorrow, weak weatherfront across the north will introduce cloud and patchy rain, drier and brighter elsewhere. The headlines are next. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. Our headlines today Boris Johnson is admitted to intensive care by doctors treating him for the the effects of coronavirus. His medical team took the measure after his condition worsened. The foreign secretary has been asked to stand in for him where necessary. Theres an incredibly Strong Team Spirit behind the Prime Minister and making sure that we get all of the plans that the Prime Minister has instructed us to deliver to get them implemented as soon as possible and thats the way well bring the whole country this morning we have the latest on the Prime Ministers condition and well speak to people who know how he, and the government, will be responding to this latest development. From winning the Rugby World Cup to fighting coronavirus south africa captain siya kolisi talks to us about playing his part in the battle against the pandemic. Life on the coronavirus front line weve a special report from inside a ward where patients are being treated for covid 19. Its tuesday 7th april. Our top story two sources close to borisjohnson say there has been no change in his condition after he was taken into intensive care last night. The Prime Minister has been given oxygen but has not been put on a ventilator. The main thing that comes across with boris all the time is this irrepressible optimism that we will get through and that is what he projects, that is what he believes, thatis projects, that is what he believes, that is what he tells himself co nsta ntly a nd that is what he tells himself constantly and that is what he was like about a week ago when he knew that he had the virus, he thought he would get through it and britain would get through it and britain would get through it and we would all be fine. This just shows how serious it really is. This was the Prime Minister last thursdayjoining the applause for health care staff. Thank you, nhs, thank you m the applause for health care staff. Thank you, nhs, thank you it is now doctors and nurses left than a mile from downing street helping him beat the coronavirus and saw this man, the coronavirus and saw this man, the foreign secretary, has been asked to deputise for mrjohnson where necessary. There is an incredibly Strong Team Spirit behind the Prime Minister and making sure that we make sure that we get all the plans the Prime Minister has instructed as to deliver to get them implemented as soon as possible and thatis implemented as soon as possible and that is the way we will bring the whole country through the coronavirus challenge that we face right now. The news has fronted reaction from around the world including from the white house. also want to send best wishes to very good friend of mine and a friend to our nation, Prime Minister borisjohnson. Americans friend to our nation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Americans are all praying for his recovery. He has beena praying for his recovery. He has been a really good friend, he has been a really good friend, he has been really something very special, strong, resolute, doesnt quit, doesnt give up. Buckingham palace said the queen was being kept informed about the condition of her 14th Prime Minister. The capacity of every branch of government was already stretched in a way no one could possibly have imagined just a few months ago and, for now at least, its leader is sidelined, too. Messages of support for the Prime Minister have been echoed across the world. Canadas Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau said his thoughts are with borisjohnson and his family echoing this, australias pm, tweeted he was thinking of all friends in the uk at this time. And in india, Narendra Modi told the Prime Minister to hang in there and hoped to see him in Perfect Health very soon. In a moment well speak to our Political Correspondent helen catt in downing street. First, lets hearfrom john mcmanus, who is outside St Thomas Hospital in Central London where the Prime Minister is receiving treatment. John, what more can you tell us . We are not expecting an official update on the premiership osma condition until later. We have been hearing from those two sources close to the pm that there has been no change overnight. Though sources say that the Prime Ministers condition remains the same as it was when he was taken into intensive care. At seven oclock last night, the Prime Minister was given oxygen and taken to the acu unit you are st thomass, the government says as a precaution so that he could be near to ventilators if he needed them. That is not the case at the moment, they say for if it were, it would mean his condition had deteriorated, he was unable to breathe on his own and he would be sedated as he was linked up he would be sedated as he was linked up to he would be sedated as he was linked uptoa he would be sedated as he was linked up to a ventilator, but the government says. No comment at the moment, but those sources seem to indicate that nothing has changed. We are waiting for an update from downing street at some point this morning, but we do know that the specialists in the acu unit will be taking care of mrjohnson by making sure his organs have enough oxygen to function so that his immune system to function so that his immune syste m ca n to function so that his immune system can concentrate on fighting the coronavirus icu. System can concentrate on fighting the coronavirus icu. You, john. Helen catt is at downing street, outside number 10. The question is this morning is how will government decisions be made . Well, we are in a different place yesterday. Yesterday we were being told that borisjohnson was still very much leading the government, that he was talking to ministers and seeing papers, that kind of thing. That is changed this morning. We know that he has asked dominic rab, the foreign secretary who also holds the foreign secretary who also holds the post of first secretary of state to deputise for him where necessary. That is not something a Prime Minister would ever really want to do unless there was more other option, so that has been now done. What is interesting is that mr raab has stressed very much last night that even though he will be in charge in the day to day running of government that the instructions, the plans that the government will be carrying out where Boris Johnsons, that it still very much is his strategy. The other thing in westminster is that it is notjust what happens when your head of government is taken out of action, as it were, but it is concerned for as it were, but it is concerned for a colleague for many people here so we have seen many well wishers from across the political spectrum. You mention some of the International Well wishers there, but also there are people such as former occupants of this place, theresa may who has said that her thoughts are with borisjohnson, david said that her thoughts are with Boris Johnson, David Cameron, said that her thoughts are with borisjohnson, David Cameron, gordon and sarah brown have both sent good wishes and the leader of the labour party has also said it is terribly sad news, scotlands first minister, Nicola Sturgeon is, said she sent mr johnson every good wish. Helen, thank you very much and we will speak to thank you very much and we will speakto iain thank you very much and we will speak to Iain Duncan Smith here and brea kfast speak to Iain Duncan Smith here and breakfast shortly. Also, Jonathan Ashworth from the labour party will be here at 20 past seven and michael gove will be here at 730 this morning, all sorts of guests coming. A heart surgeon at wales largest hospital has died from coronavirus. Jitendra rathod was an associate specialist in cardiothoracic surgery at the University Hospital of wales. In a tribute posted on its website, cardiff and Vale University health board said he was an incredibly dedicated surgeon who cared deeply for his patients. 439 people died in hospital from the effects of coronavirus on monday. Overall there are 51,608 confirmed cases in the uk and the total number of people to die from the virus has reached 5,373. This number does not account for people who have died in the community or in a care home. The coronavirus pandemic has claimed more than 50,000 lives across europe. However, new infections have fallen in spain and italy in recent days. The death toll in italy remains the highest in the world, standing at 16,523. Our correspondent Jean Mackenzie is in rome. Good morning. Isuppose good morning. I suppose the positive news is that there has been a decline in infections, is that right . Yes, the infection rate is really slowing here and it has been for the last week so each day, the number of new infections we are hearing about is falling slightly, but the number of people currently infecting is still rising each day and we had a jump yesterday in the daily dental after two days of decline, so it is reallyjust a reminder this morning if we needed one that recovery from this virus is not easy and the rolled down is not a lwa ys not easy and the rolled down is not always straightforward. This country is still in lockdown, it will be in lockdown until after easter. The Prime Minister is meeting some of his top scientist later to discuss what happens to these restrictions, how and when they can ease them, someone think they are looking at is potentially letting some Key Industries reopen while keeping eve ryo ne industries reopen while keeping everyone else locked down, also more Contact Tracing which is where you work out where the new infections have come from and isolate these places but these are all ideas at this stage. The only decisions will be made after they understand what has happened to infections later this week. To give you a picture across europe, yesterday the total number of cases of coronavirus in spain actually overtook italy, but they have now had four days of their death toll decreasing and the rate of infection, like in italy, is decreasing. In france yesterday, they took in their highest death rate in this crisis of fire and announced they will soon Start Testing anyone deem vulnerable to try to bring that down. Thank you very much for the latest therefrom room this morning. The former vatican treasurer, Cardinal George pell, has been freed from jail after his convictions for child sexual abuse were overturned by australias highest court. In 2018, a jury found him guilty of abusing two choirboys when he was archbishop of melbourne in the 1990s. His lawyers successfully argued the trialjury had failed to eliminate reasonable doubt of his guilt. Honor blackman, the british actor who played pussy galore in the James Bond Film goldfinger, has died at the age of 94. Ms blackman, who was also known for playing cathy gale in the 1960s tv series the avengers, is said to have died peacefully of Natural Causes at her home in east sussex. She had an incredibly long career. You are up to date with the news, good morning. When cabinet ministers dial in for their daily emergency Coronavirus Briefing this morning, theyll see the foreign secretary at the helm. Dominic raab will deputise during Boris Johnsons absence. Were joined now from london by former conservative leader, sir Iain Duncan Smith. Thank you so much forjoining us. There have been so many goodwill m essa g es there have been so many goodwill messages for the Prime Minister all across the world. What are your thoughts . Well, minor personal, really, because i have known the Prime Ministerfor really, because i have known the Prime Minister for pretty much most of my career and he has been a pretty good friend and i helped to run his campaign and we have always keptin run his campaign and we have always kept in contact with each other and soiam kept in contact with each other and so i am sad to see that he is going through this trial and i feel very sorry and my thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. His fiancee is alone, being pregnant, and also the other children that he has and so this is a difficult moment for them, but that notwithstanding, the bar as i know is a fighter. He never gives up, his whole life has been about that, so i am with him all the way as many as my friends and colleagues are. It has been very clear that he has not been well for some time now, but absolutely determined to carry on throughout the honours. Yes, he is, and, again, i have had one or two people saying when listening to him on the air that he should have done this, should have done that, but the truth is that he is Prime Minister and was elected to run this country and no Prime Minister is going to suddenly say, look, i am not well and i am going to let someone else do it. He does it up until the point, quite rightly, until the point, quite rightly, until he feels he can no longer contribute because of the circumstances surrounding his illness and i think he has done that. That may have taken its toll, but that notwithstanding is pretty much the way i would have expected and thought he would have behaved and thought he would have behaved and therefore i think right now we need to focus absolutely on how we get through this. Lets pray that boris comes through, im sure he will, i believe strongly in his capability and his determination and the work of the doctors and nurses in the wonderful nhs that weve got, but the point about many people watching this, they should not worry about how government works. Government continues to work. We have a collegiate form of government here with the cabinet, decisions are made by the government collectively although the Prime Minister leads that and has very strong views. Policy will not change and dominic raab i know and have a lot of confidence in stepping in for the Prime Minister and policy will not suddenly change. Presumably this is unprecedented and not without challenges either. No, absolutely. We are in an unknown area. We have not faced this before, this ghastly pan derek and the terrible virus which has swept the world and is causing huge damage all over every other country we can think of at the moment from america to italy to china to india. There are real problems. But we have a plan. That plan, i hope and believe, mayjust be beginning to work. It may be too early to say, but the shutdown of the last two weeks has brought a semblance of help to the nhs so that they have not been overwhelmed yet andi they have not been overwhelmed yet and i hope that will be the case, but this plan, i believe, will work. It requires the public, of course, absolutely to stick to this at the moment, to state home and not do anything outside other than some exercise and maybe going to get the shopping but other than that you must a and home and give real support to the nhs by doing that and thatis support to the nhs by doing that and that is the way we will get through this and save lives. There are so many important questions and decisions that will need to be made in the next few days and coming weeks, so who is, at the moment, the ultimate Decision Maker . Weeks, so who is, at the moment, the ultimate decisionmaker . There is no question about that. The deputy to the Prime Minister, what we called the Prime Minister, what we called the first secretary, we have no statutory position of deputy Prime Minister really, saw his deputy is dominic raab. Dominic raab has now been handed the reins of power for the moment while the Prime Minister is unable to communicate and he will exercise those powers in a moderate way. In other words, exercise those powers in a moderate way. In otherwords, he exercise those powers in a moderate way. In other words, he will be part of the cabinets, leading the cabinets, but it will be the sum total of the cabinets Decision Making ability. It is the same way the Prime Minister would have done it. The Prime Minister thinks his view should prevail, and dominic raba will read on that basis. Every cabinet minister, and having served as one myself i know this, every cabinet minister knows what they have to do, knows what they have to deliver from their section of where they are in the cabinet and therefore together, nothing should really change. They have a job to do and i am sure today they will face that exactly like they will face that exactly like they faced it yesterday, in sorrow but nonetheless a determination. These are worrying times for everybody. People will be watching you are personally affected by what is going on. How does the fact that the Prime Minister is now in intensive care affect morale, not just political, is it . The public. Boris is a singular character, and ebullient, upbeat, always wanting to give people he meets and the public in general a sense of optimism. Its what he does, its the way he works and thats what makes him, in a sense, cut through, and so many people who will have met him orjust watch them on television will worry about this, but i honestly, genuinely believe that boris could not be in better hands right now with the wonderful nhs that we have got and he will fight this through and we are with him on that. But with regard to the country and the running of the country, i hope i can reassure everybody, having sat at the table myself, that the cabinet system of government allows this to happen. It is not a president ial system. We have a Prime Minister who is, as someone said, first amongst equals. The rest of those equals are still in post and dominic raab is one of them and will lead them through this using the same Decision Making process until boris is able to step back up again and ta ke is able to step back up again and take charge and that, we fervently hope, from the bottom of our hearts. He is notjust Prime Minister, he is afamily man he is notjust Prime Minister, he is a family man with his fiancee and he is unable to be seen by family, just like everyone else. Yes, this is desperate and this brings home, i think, so many of the terrible things that happen with this ghastly virus and so many families have not been able to attend their loved ones in hospitals, many families have even not been able to support or help them once the medical teams surround them and this is the same for borisjohnson. Surround them and this is the same for Boris Johnson. Arguing surround them and this is the same for borisjohnson. Arguing the must powerful manning britain, the Prime Minister of the united kingdom, he is in exactly the same position in many cases as every other person in britain and many cases as every other person in britain and i think therefore, you know, it brings home to everybody just how terrible this process has been for very many people, even those whose families and loved ones have survived to this, the ordeal is terrible for them at home unable to help. But that is the point, really, which i hope, again, boris going through this ordeal, going through it in through this ordeal, going through itina through this ordeal, going through it in a sense for the whole country and showing them that no matter who you are you can get this virus and therefore it sticking to the guidelines and the rules that we have set out, which is staying at home and helping the nhs to save lives, that is critical if we are to beat this and i hope people who may have wondered out the other day and decided to sit around having barbecues will really think about this carefully and think that actually this is serious, really serious, if the most powerful man in britain can come down with this, so can you, so please stick to those guidelines. From everything you have said, i imagine that decision for him to sort of handover, at least for the moment, for dominic raab must have been a very difficult one for him to make as well. Of course it is. He was elected to govern, he was elected as Prime Minister in a parliamentary system to lead the cabinets, to lead the country. I believe he has done a really good job, considering the terrible pressures on him and also this virus that hit him half way through. I think boro recession great leadership and great skills and the cabinet is capable of doing this and i know there are some who were all saying this will happen, that will happen, but the truth is we are being well governed at the moment andi being well governed at the moment and i believe borisjohnson is doing really well as Prime Minister and he will do again when he recovers, which i pray for, but in the meantime, dominic raab, who i have known for a long time and have huge respect for his capabilities, will be surrounded by others with seniority and understanding, people like michael gove and various others will rally around him, of that i am certain. This morning will be about supporting dominic and supporting the country as it was yesterday and the country as it was yesterday and the day before. Thank you very much indeed for your time here on brea kfast indeed for your time here on breakfast and thank you. We will be speaking to michael gove in about ten minutes time. University College Hospital in london has transformed its wards in order to deal with a surge in covid 19 patients. Our medical correspondent, fergus walsh, has been inside to meet the nhs staff and patients and witness the extraordinary pressures they are facing. In the space of two weeks, university College Hospital has been transformed into a coronavirus treatment centre. Almost all the nearly 700 beds are being set aside for patients with covid 19. At the moment, most of our positive patients are of an older age, over 70, although we have had some positive patients that are currently with us now that are in their mid 30s. So its quite a Broad Spectrum actually. Among the patients on this covid ward, we met imran from enfield. Hes just 37 years old and was previously fit and healthy. I think its very progressively slow. I dont feel better at the moment. Ido. I am hoping i will get better, but i am struggling to come to feel better and to do normal things. Imran is over the worst. Despite the terrible toll of the virus, which is claiming hundreds of lives a day, the hospital says we mustnt lose sight of all those who recover, and the work of nhs staff that help them. If you watch television or if you read the newspaper, its mostly doom and gloom and a lot of negative stories. But if you look at the response of a lot of nhs hospitals, if not all nhs hospitals, its absolutely fantastic whats happening there. The nurses and doctors have been inundated with gifts from local businesses and residents. This is the staff room for those who work in intensive care. Hi, everyone. Thank you so much on behalf of all the team on itu at uch whove really helped keep morale up and were just doing what we love to do, look after people, so thank you so much. Theyve urged the public to stay at home to slow the spread of the virus and save lives. Fergus walsh, bbc news. In amongst the darkness on the worry theres some really positive stories around at the moment. Were joined now from leicester by Shadow Health secretary Jonathan Ashworth. Hejoins us from he joins us from leicester. Hejoins us from leicester. Thank you very much for spending time with us this morning. Good to speak to you. Im sure youre keeping up to date with whats happening with the Prime Minister and many other people are in intensive care units and struggling with their Health Across the country as well, and im sure you would miss the Prime Minister a speedy recovery this morning. Absolutely, our thoughts are with the Prime Minister. He is of course, our nations leader and we are rooting for him. We want him to come through this because we want him back fit and healthy leading the fight against this awful, awful virus, but is not just a against this awful, awful virus, but is notjust a politician, hes a father, hes with his new fiancee, expecting a child, so this be awful times for his loved ones and we really do wish him the very, very best and i know he will be receiving the most exceptional, brilliant care from our nhs staff at saint thomas is, so he really is in good hands, but today this isnt about politics. It doesnt matter whether you voted for him or not, the whole country will be wishing him the very best and wanting him to swiftly recover. Do you feel that sense of unity across the house . We were speaking to the new shadow chancellor yesterday about that the balance of wanting things to return to normal, to support the government wherever you can, but also trying to balance up you can, but also trying to balance up that with criticism of the way you might think they are handling certain parts of this. How do you balance that at the moment . Well, there is unity because this is a virus which threatens every human being, it doesnt discriminate in that respect. I mean, we know that certain sections of the population are perhaps more at risk, the vulnerable elderly people with long term conditions, but young, Healthy People can get this virus and all of us are human beings, all of us want to see us succeed in defeating this virus, so there is unity. I mean, obviously there are times when we ask questions, we make suggestions, because people come to us with issues, nhs staff come to us and ask us to raise issues, so there are times when we do that but we are not doing it because we want to score a point or cause problems. We do it because this is a time when people have deep concerns. But there is tremendous unity because we are all wanting to see the National Effort to beat this virus succeed, dont we . Do you think its time for an official government of National Unity and can you give us may be an idea of how much correspondence you are having with your opposite number matt hancock at the moment . In fairness, matt hancock has been excellent at keeping me informed, ive been for meetings with him, spoken to him over the phone in recent times. I have been in in this health role for a few years now, weve just had a change of leadership on my party, but i remain in this role that a few weeks ago i went into have a meeting with the prime and his advisers alongside jeremy corbyn, so im very impressed by the sense with which the government briefed me, kept me updated, and brought me in for meetings, and i imagine that would continue. Can i ask you more generally as well, we are hearing a lot about those people who are struggling with this virus, of course the Prime Minister, your own colleague tony lloyd, as well, others, junior staff in westminster, is the normal business of government and parliament able to function at the moment . Parliament isnt sitting at the moment and im pleased you mentioned tony lloyd, labour mp in the shadow cabinet and he is in intensive care as well and our thoughts are with him and his family also, but parliament isnt sitting at the moment because we are broken up at the moment because we are broken upfor at the moment because we are broken up for easter. But parliament does need to find a way of reconvening after easter because we do need to ask ministers questions, we do need to understand whats going on, thats how democracy functions, but we need to do that in a way which is responsible, so i Hope Parliament is looking at making more use of skype and Conference Call facilities. We dont all need to be sat in the house of Commons Chamber which is a lot smaller than it looks on tv. Its a very small room compared to what the viewers might think it is because when you sit on the tv screens, everyone is really packed in there, thats the last thing we need to be doing at this time of crisis, because Everybody Needs to follow the advice, stay at home, respect social distancing rules, wash your hands, because this really isa wash your hands, because this really is a serious virus, which can do unspeakable things to people, so please, everybody watching, theres a reason why everyone is saying stay at home and avoid the park and so on. It really is very serious. Jonathan ashworth thank you very much for your time this morning. We will be speaking to michael gove and a few moments time. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. It looks misty but lovely. Good morning, everyone. I love the picture from wales this morning showing there is some messed around. That definitely will not last and the left quite quickly and its a chilly start. Some of seeing a touch of frost first thing but for most today, it will be dry and there will be some sunny spells around. High pressure still in charge of our weather. We do have a weather front coming in from the west. Thats going to throw in more cloud at times and in the north west, still a brisk breeze. So we will lose the mist and fog first thing this morning and then there will be a lot of sunshine across much of scotland. Still breezing in the west, a bit more cloud in the outer hebrides. For northern england, Little Pockets of cloud for you but a lot of dry weather. A cold start with some sunshine. For wales, the midlands, east anglia heading south, a similar story, patchy mist and fog lifting. A cold start but a fair bit of sunshine. Through the day, some fair weather cloud building. Turning the sunshine hazy. It could be thick enough across the Channel Islands and South West England for the odd shower. Temperature wise, nine in lerwick down to 21 in london. If you are going out for your permitted exercise today, worth noting if you have an allergy to tree pollen, across england and wales, the levels are high. They will be high tomorrow, as well, for that matter. This evening and overnight, the weather front of the north west pushes into scotland, getting into northern ireland, and for a time it will have heavy and persistent rain and ahead of it, still a lot of cloud around. So not as cold a night as the one which has just gone. But here and there, we could see pockets of mist and fog, particularly so in parts of england. Tomorrow, that the left readily under weather front sink southwards. Across scotland and northern ireland. A weak feature. The rain increasingly turning patchy, but behind it, brighter skies, and i had a lot of sunshine around. Through the day tomorrow, we are expecting a bit more cloud to come into the south, south wales, the midlands, for example, and we could catch the odd shower and that could catch the odd shower and that could be heavy and thundery. Thats why yesterday we were seeing temperatures get up to perhaps 2324. If temperatures get up to perhaps 23 24. If you get a shower, its likely to be 22 23 as a top temperature inland. On thursday, here is a weak weather front producing this cloud across northern england, scotland and for a time, northern ireland, but for the rest of us, once again it will be dry, sunny spells, and temperatures between 9 21. As we head into good friday and easter weekend, things change, turning a bit more u nsettled, change, turning a bit more unsettled, turning cooler and at times we will see showers or indeed some rain. Very much for beginning to look ahead to easter, carol. See you later. Hello, this is breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. Lets get you right up to date with the news. There has been no change to the Prime Ministers condition, after he was taken into intensive care last night. Boris johnson seen here applauding front line workers on thursday evening was admitted to St Thomas Hospital on sunday night. His medical team moved him yesterday evening when his symptoms worsened. The foreign secretary, dominic raab, will stand in for him in government. Were joined now by minister for the Cabinet Office, michael gove. Good to talk to you, as ever, mr gove. Thank you for talking to us this morning. Are you able to give us any update on the Prime Ministers health this morning . Hi, good morning. Well, as you have been reporting, the Prime Minister was taken into reporting, the Prime Minister was ta ken into intensive reporting, the Prime Minister was taken into intensive care last night and he was taken into intensive care at 7pm last night after his condition worsened during the day and, as we speak, the Prime Minister is in intensive care, being looked after by his medical team, receiving the very, very best care from the tea m the very, very best care from the team at st thomass and our thoughts and prayers are with him and with his family. Ok, we look forward to an official update later on in the day may be. Cannot ask you, because we understand up until yesterday, he was still receiving government papers and speaking to various members of government as well, we heard the foreign secretary said yesterday he had not spoken to the Prime Minister since saturday. Have you had any contact with the Prime Minister for the last 48 hour or so . I have spoken to members of the Prime Ministers team but not the Prime Ministers team but not the Prime Ministers team but not the Prime Minister himself. As you are aware, he went into hospital on sunday following medical advice and the Prime Minister has a team around him who ensure that the work of government goes on. As you say, the Prime Ministers designated the foreign secretary dominic raab as first secretary of state. That means that dominic takes on the responsibility of chairing the various meetings that the Prime Minister would have chaired, but we are all working together to intimate the plan the Prime Minister set out in order to ensure that we can marshal all the resources of government and, indeed, all the resources of our country in the battle against this invisible enemy. Can you give our viewers an idea this morning, you say you will be working without the Prime Minister there, how will bulls decisions be made . Well, we meet collectively. Every morning at around 9 15am, normally the Prime Minister chairs but yesterday and today it will be dominic raab who chairs a minister in which ministers are brought together and officials and also the governments chief medical officer and chief scientific adviser have an opportunity to review the data to see what the progress of the disease is telling us about how successful the measures we have put in place have been and then we review the work that needs to go on in order to support the nhs, to keep Public Services working, to keep our economy in a strong position. One of the things about the approach that we ta ke the things about the approach that we take is that the work is divided between a team and we have ministers and officials working effectively between a team in order to permit the Prime Ministers plan. between a team in order to permit the Prime Ministers plan. I do not know if it is something as your end rns, but the vision on your line has paused, but hopefully it will fix itself. Your audio is fine so we will continue. Some detail on those key decisions, if the Prime Minister is in intensive care for a while and stays on in hospital, if there are decisions to be made about social restrictions, or the economy getting moving again and there is disagreement over those key decisions, who has the final say . Well, so far we have proceeded com pletely well, so far we have proceeded completely by consensus and we do so ina team completely by consensus and we do so in a team way. Members of the cabinet, following the scientific advice and the medical advice we have received from those people who have received from those people who have the authority as the expertise in those areas. The Decision Making process , in those areas. The Decision Making process, of course, is that the cabinet is the supreme Decision Making body. We have meetings, as i mentioned, of cabinet ministers and other officials and throughout the day, we have other meetings. We have a meeting to coordinate Health Care Response chaired by the health secretary, there is also a Ministerial Group to coordinate our economic and Business Response chaired by the chancellor and the business secretary as deputy and the business secretary as deputy and there is a meeting to discuss coordination of international effo rts coordination of interNational Efforts bringing people back from abroad, making sure that their trade routes that we need are operating effectively and that is chaired by dominic raab and then there is another meeting in order to ensure that the broader Public Sector gets what it needs and i chair that meeting with ministers notjust from the uk government but also from the devolved administrations involved. That gives us a good idea of how things will continue without the Prime Minister at the helm. I wonder as well, mr gove, about the fact that the Prime Minister was seen to be in self isolation for quite a time in the flat, in number 11, but still trying to lead things. I wonder if now, in reflection from yourself and from others who were working alongside him, whether his determination to lead from the front has maybe produced a situation we are in now and if he had been able to ta ke are in now and if he had been able to take a bit more of a back seat and care for his health a bit more, maybe he would not be in the situation he currently finds himself. Is that something you have discussed in cabinet . The Prime Minister has been following medical advice and his own doctors have given clear advice at every stage which the Prime Minister has followed. The Prime Minister loves this country and wants to do his very, very best for us and that is one of the reasons why he has made sure that he has been involved in the Decision Making and chaired meetings but he has also had a stripped back diary which has been based on medical advice but ultimately i think one of the things about this is that it is new and a uniquely challenging virus and we must all follow the appropriate medical advice and all of us are discovering that this virus has a malignancy and malevolence that is truly frightening. We are really living in unprecedented times, arent we . We saw that address from her majesty the queen, only the fifth time she has done that in her reign over the last few days and now we have the Prime Minister in intensive care. How worried are you about the current situation, can i ask you that . Well, naturally, everyday there are challenges because we are living, as you say, in unprecedented times. But i draw confidence from the fact that the British Public are responding so well, that our nhs is responding so effectively to the challenges that we face. Of course, there are concerns that all of us have, concerns that all of us have, concerns about friends and family and concerns today about the Prime Minister and his family, and concerns today about the Prime Ministerand his family, but and concerns today about the Prime Minister and his family, but i think we also draw strength and confidence, as her majesty the queen pointed out, that across the country, there are people who are volunteering to help. Today, some of the 750,000 people who volunteered to help will be out delivering prescriptions to those in need, helping their neighbours at a difficult time and all of us, i think, have a lot of admiration as well for the waaaah doctors, nurses, hospital and social care staff the way our doctors and other staff have worked so hard and are making us all proud. They are doing their best to function at the moment but we spoke to Jonathan Best to function at the moment but we spoke toJonathan Ashworth about a number of ministers who are self isolating, political aides, staff, in terms of the function of government at the moment, how are you sort of operating, with a hand painter back or are things able to progress with the best way that you can . Things are going ahead in the best way that we can plan. Things are operating using the sort of techniques, Video Conferencing techniques, Video Conferencing techniques with which most people now i think are familiar. That means that decisions can be making and we hire real time from medical experts, we can review evidence, we can look at the data and take appropriate decisions. Of course, there are constraints but we recognise that those constraints are there in the interests of us all. We are all having to adjust to working in different ways based on the advice of what is best to do to avoid spreading the disease, but the work of government goes on. We have a superb Civil Service and they have ensured that their machinery is there for decisions to be made by ministers, by medical and scientific experts and for those decisions to be followed through in a way which enables us to help those on the front line. You work with the Prime Minister regularly, you know him well, how do you think you will be feeling about being out of action in this way . Obviously, his health is the primary concern, but he will be desperate to get out of intensive ca re desperate to get out of intensive care as unity possibly can and get back to doing the job he was elected to do. Well, i mean, the Prime Minister is someone, as i said earlier, who loves this country, who always, always, always want to be doing his best, pushing things forward , doing his best, pushing things forward, driving change, making his attempt to make things better, but he is also having to follow medical advice and is now in intensive care. Our thoughts and prayers are with him at this moment and we all hope, we all hope that he can be restored to health as quickly as possible and thatis to health as quickly as possible and that is all be a thing about at the moment. Michael gove, good to talk to you. Thank you for your time this morning. Really good to hear from michael gove. We will have the sport in the minute and the weather as welljust before the headlines at 8am. Another busy day for emily. Dozens of mums have called her and need her help stop inside this container are things they cannot find or struggle to afford, hundreds of nappies, toys, clothes, all donated to the baby bank that emily set up. It works like a food bank and in this town, some parents cannot manage without it. At the moment, i have had to ask all my volunteers to stay at home because of Health Reasons or because they have Young Children so there is just me trying to reach as many families across hartlepool as i can. Hi, how is it going . Busy, you know. First up is charlie. She has a medical condition and is self isolating. She is looking after her baby son, but her family are having to work elsewhere. Its heartbreaking. Ijust want to be able to hold her, to kiss her. Sorry. Its breaking. Breaking my heart. If it wasnt for people like emilie, thenjosie would have to go without cause i wouldnt have another way to have access to her. Weve lost our safe space because we cant use our buildings. Weve lost our community feel. Now were just trying to reach as many isolated and lonely families as we can and just do what we can. I suffer with anxiety and depression, so being a big supermarket isnt my kind of thing. And i think there is that fear there now that there is a virus going about, and you have got a child, so the baby bank have been brilliant and given me the things that i cant go out and get myself. The demand has just been incredible. My son is asthmatic and obviously we are concerned about him and my husband took a long, hard look at it and said, should i still do this . And we decided i had to, because no one else is doing it. Other provisions arent in place for families, they are not in place for tiny babies. People are looking at elderly but they are not looking at pregnant women, they are not looking at how scary it is to be 30 weeks pregnant and told to confine yourself for 12 weeks when you havent finished your shopping. How positive are you about the future . We see a problem and we find our own solution because we are used to being forgotten by the government and we are used to being left on our own. We are not part of any other authority, so we are used to grafting and coming up with our own solutions. So thats why we will, because we always have and we always will. There is some good people out there, arent there . We are trying to do a bit of that on breakfast every single day, remember there are Amazing Things happening, people really helping out other people and todayis really helping out other people and today is the day all those volunteers, perhaps not all of them, will be starting their work today. We will be speaking to some of those volu nteers we will be speaking to some of those volunteers later in the programme, as well. Some great guests lined up for you and sally has some rather remarkable to speak to this morning. Good morning. Yes, rugby legend, someone we have wanted to talk to for quite awhile now and im delighted to say we are going to talk to the south African World cup winning captain siya kolisi. Good morning to you. Of course, people at home will know you growing up in the townships to eventually becoming south africa captain and lifting the Rugby World Cup. You are very much involved in south africas mission to try to fight coronavirus and the pandemic and youve Just Announced your foundation is supplying protective equipment to hospitals across south africa. What is the situation like there and how much can you help . Good morning, thank you so much for talking to me. Yes, its quite tough at this moment. Weve never seen anything like this in south africa. Its very quiet around here, ive never stayed this long at home, but, yes, we are doing as much as we can, and the foundation has launched and we had tojump on and help as much foundation has launched and we had to jump on and help as much as we could, so we are targeting the front line people, which is obviously the medical team we are trying to help as much as we can, we have supplied three hospitals at the moment, and theres a lot of other ngos helping as much as we could. Obviously, south africa is in complete lockdown now, you are at home with the family. What is life like at home day to for you now . Its a bit weird but, at the same time, its amazing for me because ive never been so long at home, ive never spent so much time with my family and im really enjoying the time. Im learning a lot more about my kids because im always on the road, so just trying to appreciate this moment, and appreciate this time with their kids and my wife. So far its been good. Ive got a full house. We try and make things good everyday. You learn to south africa to one of their most historic winds. Asa to one of their most historic winds. As a leader, you are used to leading sports teams. What can you draw on now to try to inspire people in your home nation and try to help them observe this really tough lockdown because i know the lockdown in south africa is one of the toughest in the right now. Yes, its really tough. I think playing in a team sport, this is going to be a team effort from all of us in south africa. The whole world in general, everyone has a role to play and this is the time i think for people to stay at home and not leave our houses and stay in com plete not leave our houses and stay in complete lockdown. Our president has acted swiftly and the government have made these rules to safeguard, andi have made these rules to safeguard, and i think for people in u nfortu nate places and i think for people in unfortunate places who can help others, the food is a big problem at the moment. Thats why most of the people choose, they dont choose, they have to leave their house or something to eat, so we are pushing ha rd something to eat, so we are pushing hard on fighting hunger and making sure people get meals. A lot of kids need one meal, so we want to provide for that and we have to help as much as we can. Lots of people know your story, they know your story from when you were a little boy and played rugby as a young kid and were spotted drumming up in the townships. How worried are you about kids who might be growing up in that situation now, in a similar situation now, in a similar situation to you where a child . think about it every day, thats why i started my foundation with my wife. I wanted to tackle these challenges that i faced as a kid, and theres a lot of people doing a lot of good work in the communities, and my goal is to try and change a lot of the kids narratives in the townships. I dont want them to go through what i went through. And make sure that they wake up and dream and one to help the country. Yes, i will work as hard as i can and a lot of people are doing that, so when i plan, thats what i will move towards, to try to change as many lives as i can. We have seen pictures of you sitting in your garden with your kids reading the letters of nelson mandela, that he wrote from captivity. What messages from those would you like to pass on, can you pass on today . You know, ijust think, his legacy, must still continue. The rainbow nation he wa nted continue. The rainbow nation he wanted to see, actually working with this foundation tackling the hunger problem and fund land workers, and we will all try to help with the hunger and the workers, because i think, you know, just thinking of other people, the way he lived his life, he always wanted to make things better, and thats what we are trying to do, to make sure, because we have a beautiful country with amazing potential and we can achieve so much, but we have to all play our part and im trying to do all i can and hopefully inspire people to make sure we think of south africa first. Siya, its wonderful to talk to you this morning. Thank you very much indeed and congratulations on everything you are doing to help the people there. Siya kolisi, the South African rugby captain talking to us this morning and hopefully we will talk to him very soon and are happier circumstances. Really good to hear from happier circumstances. Really good to hearfrom him, sally, thank you very much. I wonderful natural leader. You can see the influence for good, as well. If youve just switched on, the main news we can bring about the condition of the Prime Minister is weve heard from two sources close to borisjohnson, theres been no change in his condition overnight. Still in intensive care at St Thomas Hospital. That story makes every one of the front pages. The news the Prime Minister has been moved into intensive care last night, the times reports its been told by doctors at saint thomas as the Prime Minister needed four litres of oxygen, which is below the usual threshold for admittance to intensive care. The daily mirror describe it as a fight for life for the Prime Minister and the guardian simply leading with johnson taking into intensive care after symptoms worsen. And also marks the fact the number of people who have died in the uk because of the coronavirus has exceeded 5000 now. The daily mail says now stricken boris taken into intensive care and describes a second in command dominic rab as a crisis standing. Its notjust uk papers leading on this story. The german newspapers feature a front page about our Prime Minister, also claiming borisjohnson page about our Prime Minister, also claiming Boris Johnson required page about our Prime Minister, also claiming borisjohnson required four litres of oxygen whilst in hospital yesterday. We were able to speak to michael gove 20 minutes ago and Iain Duncan Smith and Jonathan Ashworth about how things functioned without the Prime Minister and until yesterday he was able to receive government papers and still be in conversation with various members of his cabinet, but that does not happen any more and dominic raab will take over today. The point is that lots of people have been making on this programme, this does not discriminate, and of course the Prime Minister like everybody else in this position unable to see his family and they are talking in the mail about his fiancee, wiley battles the virus in hospital, the mother of his unborn child, a few miles away recovering herself, unable to be by his side, and thats something we have talked about on this programme, how difficult it is forfamilies this programme, how difficult it is for families because of the very nature of what we are dealing with, that they cannot visit, cannot go to hospital, which again adds to the impact of whats going on. We were speaking to an intensive Care Specialist earlier, learning all the time more about the situation of the Prime Minister and many people are facing at the moment, and she said the average stay in the uk intensive ca re the average stay in the uk intensive care tends to be five days, but if you are able to leave intensive care, and go to another ward in hospital, there is a Recovery Period with that. Across the uk, people have been urged to keep at least two metres apart from anyone outside their household, but key workers have raised concerns that its not always possible to stay at a safe distance from your colleagues. Now the Welsh Government has introduced legislation to compel employers to make sure their staff remain protected while at work. Wales first minister, Mark Drakeford, joins us now from cardiff. Thank you so much forjoining us and i will come to the distancing rules ina minute i will come to the distancing rules in a minute but first of all, so many people sending messages of good will of course to the Prime Minister. What would you like to say . Of course, we absolutely share that sentiment. It is shocking news, last evening, very glad that the Prime Minister is being looked after and im sure he is. Our very best wishes to him and his family at this really worrying time. We also know that dominic raab will effectively be put into control, and in your view that is what should be happening . Yes, of course, the government need someone to conduct its business. There will be a group of people around the Prime Minister, dominic raab will now lead the discussion is necessary over the days ahead. Government does keep going, even the most difficult of times and we look forward to continuing to work, as we have with the uk government throughout this very difficult period. We know dominic raab was talking about this Strong Team Spirit in the cabinet. Some really sad news about a welsh heart surgeon from wales yesterday, who was a specialist in cardiff, suffering from coronavirus, really sad news about him . Desperately sad news, very senior sad news about him . Desperately sad news, very senior and very highly regarded doctor here in wales. We have had clinicians on the front suffering from coronavirus and it just tells us, doesnt it, this virus has no respect of persons or place, which is why it is so important we all do absolutely everything we can to protect one another from its impact. It gives us all a sense of how much people who work in the nhs are doing for the rest of us. Exactly that. You know, we are relying on so many people on the front line in the nhs, in social care, but in otherjobs, as well. The crisis demonstrates the extent to which we are absolutely dependent upon one another. Can you also give usa upon one another. Can you also give us a little bit more detail about this introduction last night of this law compelling all employers to make sure workers keep two metres apart. How will it work, for example . How will it be enforced . Employers need to ta ke will it be enforced . Employers need to take all reasonable measures to make sure that people in the workplace are protected. Those Peoples Health and well being has to come first. It isnt an absolute rule because we recognise that in many workplaces there will be moments when people will be closer than two metres. But we nevertheless expect employers with their employees will take all reasonable measures to observe that to me to distance because thats one of the key ways in which we protect one another. We want to make sure that all workers in wales benefit from that rule. It will be policed by workers themselves. I have a meeting yesterday but the tuc, and their members on the ground will know now that the law makes this requirement and workers and employers must come together to take all those reasonable measures they can, because that is how we protect one another, slow down the spread of the coronavirus, and save lives. Mark dra keford, coronavirus, and save lives. Mark drakeford, first minister of wales, thank you very much for your time on brea kfast thank you very much for your time on breakfast this morning. We have made quite a few changes to our programme in the last few weeks and days. One of those, if you are just getting used to it is that carol does the weather now at 27 minutes past the hour and just before the start of the hour and thats why we are going to carol right now because we are trying to reduce the number of people working across this programme so no longer do we have the regional bulletins during breakfast but we do have you. Thats right, it makes sense to have fewer people in the building too. The forecast for today is a chilly start, with some frost around, some patchy mist and fog, which will lift and for most of us it will be dry and for most of us it will be dry and sunny as High Pressure remains in charge of our weather. But look at the squeeze on the isobars. A brisk breeze across the north west. So yesterday was a cooler day compared to the weekend. As we go through today, temperature is beginning to rise and tomorrow looks like it will be the warmest day of this week. First thing this morning we lose the mist and fog. The frost lifts and temperatures rising mostly already and there is a lot of sunshine around but we have got a weather front out towards the north west and here we will see thicker cloud, possibly some spots of rain in the outer hebrides and a brisk breeze. More fair to the course of the day as well. Some of the cloud in the Channel Islands, South West England, could be thick enough for the odd spot and temperatures to date reaching from nine in the north from 21 in the south. Now, tonight, once again, a weather front, and this time south. Now, tonight, once again, a weatherfront, and this time pushing southwards and eastwards and for a time it will have persistent and heavy rain in it across north west scotland, eventually getting into northern ireland, as well, but with more cloud around than last night, its not going to be as cold a night, and any mist and fog were left quite quickly tomorrow. This weather front sinking southwards will weaken all the time, turning more patchy, bright behind it, sunny spells had a bit, with a risk of showers in the south with highs of 23. There are News Headlines follow next. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. Our headlines today. Boris johnson is admitted to intensive care by doctors treating him for the the effects of coronavirus. His medical team took the measure after his condition worsened. Its believed there have been no major changes overnight. His own doctors have given him clear advice at every stage, and the Prime Minister has followed. The Housing Market in deep freeze. A 70 reduction in agreed sales. With buyers and sellers trying to work out where they stand ill be looking at the latest guidance. Liverpool apologised to fans and reverse their decision to put some stuff on temporary leave, saying they reach the wrong conclusion and will find their own way to pay them. We report on the new and unusual bonds being forged between family and friends in lockdown. Its tuesday 7th april. Our top story two sources close to borisjohnson say there has been no change in his condition after he was taken into intensive care last night. The Prime Minister has been given oxygen but has not been put on a ventilator. No Prime Minister is going to suddenly say, look, im not well, im just going to let somebody else do it. He does it up until the point, quite rightly, where he feels he can no longer contribute because of the circumstances surrounding his illness. And i think hes done that. Now, that may have taken its toll, but that notwithstanding is pretty much the way i would have expected and thought he would have behaved. This was the Prime Minister last thursday, joining the applause for health care staff. Thanks, nhs, thank you it is now doctors and nurses less than a mile from downing street in hospital helping the Prime Minister beat the coronavirus. And so this man, the foreign secretary, dominic raab, has been asked to deputise for mrjohnson, where necessary. Theres an incredibly Strong Team Spirit behind the Prime Minister, and making sure that we get all of the plans the Prime Minister has instructed us to deliver, to get them implemented as soon as possible, and that is the way we will bring the whole country through the coronavirus challenge that we face right now. The worsening of the Prime Ministers condition has prompted reaction from around the world, including from the white house. I also want to send best wishes to a very good friend of mine and a friend to our nation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Americans are all praying for his recovery, hes been a really good friend, hes been really something very special. Strong, resolute, doesnt quit, does not give up. Buckingham palace said the queen was being kept informed about the condition of her 14th Prime Minister. The capacity of every branch of government was already stretched in a way no one could possibly have imagined just a few months ago. And for now, at least, its leader is sidelined too. Chris mason, bbc news at westminster. In a moment, well speak to our Political Correspondent helen catt in downing street. First, lets hearfrom john mcmanus, who is outside St Thomas Hospital in Central London, where the Prime Minister is receiving treatment. He is in intensive care at the moment. Lots of people are desperate foran moment. Lots of people are desperate for an update, officially we do not know much, but what can you tell us this morning about how the Prime Minister is . We have heard news from sources close to the Prime Minister saying his condition has not changed, but we are waiting from an official downing street update which should come at some point this morning. We know that the Prime Minister spent the night in one of two ac units are st thomas, he was taken there last night at around 9pm after being given oxygen by medics, sources say it is a precaution so that he is close to a ventilator if he needs it. If that becomes the case, it means his condition has deteriorated and it would mean that he would have to be sedated so he could be put on the ventilator. That is not the that the moment, medics will be monitoring him to make sure his organs can get enough oxygen so he can carry on and his immune system he can carry on and his immune syste m ca n he can carry on and his immune system can fight the virus, but one doctor said any coronavirus patient who ends up in icu, it is a massive challenge, one of the biggest of their lives. We will keep you updated on the bbc throughout the day. Helen catt is at number ten downing street, we have been looking at who makes decisions on what happens now from a governmental point of view . The work of government continues and the man who will be taking charge on a daily basis at the moment is dominic rather, the foreign secretary. He also holds this post of first secretary of state, and Boris Johnson has asked him to step in and deputise for him where needed. This marks a change, dominic raab has been very clear in interviews that it is still borisjohnsons plans and instructions that he and other senior ministers, the cabinet, will be carrying out. One of the first thing do is to chair the daily coronavirus government meeting in a couple of alex one of the first things he will do. Throughout the time when borisjohnson was self isolating in downing street right until yesterday, we were being told he was still leading the government response, he was seeing documents, talking to ministers and officials. So this is a change from that. His cabinet colleague michael gove was asked whether that meant he had pushed it too far . A blow his own doctors had given him clear advice at every stage, which the Prime Minister has followed. The Prime Minister has followed. The Prime Minister loves this country, he wants to do his very best for us and thatis wants to do his very best for us and that is one of the reasons he has nature he has been involved in the Decision Making, he has chaired meetings that he has also stripped back its diary, reflecting medical advice he has had. But he has also stripped back his diary. Asking someone to deputise a big move for a Prime Minister and not one that they would want to make unless there was no other option. It is notjust about dealing with what happens when youre headed government is taken out of circulation, but for many people there as well concern for somebody who is a colleague. , a friend. The happy messages of support from across the political spectrum. Labour leader sir keir starmer said it was terribly sad news that we have heard tweets of support from some of the previous occu pa nts of support from some of the previous occupants of this place, theresa may said her thoughts and prayers were with Boris Johnson and said her thoughts and prayers were with borisjohnson and his family and it shows the virus does not discriminate, there have been m essa g es of discriminate, there have been messages of support from David Cameron and others including gordon and sarah brown. Thank you. A heart surgeon at wales largest hospital has died from coronavirus. Jitendra rathod was an associate specialist in cardiothoracic surgery at the University Hospital of wales. Earlier the welsh first minister Mark Drakeford said it was a great loss. Desperately sad news, a very senior and very highly regarded doctor here in wales. We have at the clinicians who had been on the front line who are suffering from coronavirus we have other clinicians. It tells us that this virus is no respecter of persons or place, which is why it is so important we do everything we can to protect one another from its impact. Now to something a little bit more light hearted. You might remember last week we spoke to the marsh family, who went viral for their hilarious self isolation rendition of the Les Miserables song one day more. I tried to say that without singing, it is quite difficult. Now, youll be pleased to hear, theyre back with a brand new song, which will sadly be their last. Well be speaking to them later on in the programme, but first heres a little taster. We are talking about when tomorrow comes. I must apologise, we are talking about when tomorrow comes. I mustapologise, i we are talking about when tomorrow comes. I must apologise, ithink we are talking about when tomorrow comes. I must apologise, i think i said it was march. It is difficult to know what day it is, but it is definitely april apologies, everybody, we are still in april. Last time i checked, it was Tuesday Morning borisjohnson is known for his energy and enthusiasm, and has been described by donald trump as strong, resolute and someone who doesnt give up. This has been echoed in the messages of support which have been shared across the political divide. In a moment, well speak to Boris Johnsons former chief of staff when he was london mayor, guto harri. Thank you so much forjoining us, there have been so many messages of goodwill for him and also people saying he is a fighter. How will he be dealing with what is going on . He will be absolutely distraught and gutted that he is on his back in hospital, not at the helm in number ten. He is a man of strong determination, a very strong physical constitution, a high pain threshold. He used to joke about by, threshold. He used to joke about rugby, no matter how hard you hit you just yourself off and get on with it. He is aware the buck stops with it. He is aware the buck stops with him on an enormous crisis which has just proved that it respects no boundaries, it is very hard to hold it back. If it can get to number ten and get the Prime Minister into intensive care, it is the most sobering thought possible for the rest of us. Sobering and worrying, i am sure, for many people. It has been absolutely clear that he has not been well. And absolutely determined to be working, you think thatis determined to be working, you think that is to his detrimental not . To add a little perspective on that, people working very closely with him have made it clear that it every point he delegated whatever was practical to do so, he scaled back its workload, he talked to doctors, very senior doctors, obviously, every day. When their advice was to go to hospital, he did that straightaway. In that sense he was trying to be responsible, that on the other hand, of course, he knows that this is a huge challenge for the uk, he will be lying awake at night worrying about this, worrying about those massive judgment pulled, about those massive judgment pulled, about lives and livelihood, the fine balance between not doing enough in doing too much, he will not have wanted, quite rightly, to delegate those big judgment calls and he has been living on his own, isolated and ace flat in number ten, not very conducive to having to rest and recuperate that your body needs to fight off this virus. Like everybody else, he has had to self isolate and not see family, either. Indeed, and that takes its toll on people. Boris isa man that takes its toll on people. Boris is a man who does not have a vast network of people, but he has Close Friends and very close family and he likes to deal with people directly, he likes to look at the whites of their eyes, he is comfortable with technology but does not think it is a substitute for proper human contact, so that will have been tough to him over the last couple of weeks. You could see him outside number ten applauding the nhs workers on thursday, he looks very rough, but the thought of not being there to show his appreciation to nhs staff would have been almost inconceivable to him. We understand, dominic raab will be taking at least a Cabinet Meeting this morning, what about that decision for Boris Johnson to had to come to the decision to ask for him to do that . What would that have been like for him . He will not add to that likely. Delegating certain things, yes, you can prize his hands off the wheel for that, but it is tricky for dominic raab as well. In our system, even at the best of times when you have a strong team and the leader is just one of the pack, if you like, the system means the Prime Minister is first. The others are of similar rank, those who hold the great offices of state. You could say matt hancock as health secretary, rishi sunak as chancellor and michael gove at the Cabinet Office has been more prominent over recent weeks, understandably, that the foreign secretary. Take boris out of the picture as the character, the person that we know, the personal mandate in an almost president ial general election, it is even more stark that what you have now is a team operating without the captain, not a substitution coming on and taking over where the captain left off. On that point, we know he is in intensive care and i will be a period of recovery. It is kind of clear that any Decision Making will have to be fluid . I think it is one of those where they all know what needs to be turn testing, getting stuff ready, organising trips and all the rest. The hard decisions are all the rest. The hard decisions are a little bit down the line, when julie is off and open up again after closing organising troops and all the rest. And when would we need to have further restrictions . That is a tough call for anybody to make u nless tough call for anybody to make unless they are the Prime Minister with the Political Authority and mandate to do that. Apart from, clearly, understandably, the personal implications of this, people will hope the Prime Minister is back on his feet as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and insight, guto harri. The speaker of the house, sir lindsay hoyle, is in chorley. We were listening to a good friend of the Prime Minister, i know you have not borisjohnson of the Prime Minister, i know you have not Boris Johnson for of the Prime Minister, i know you have not borisjohnson for many yea rs have not borisjohnson for many years and i am sure you would echo those who are desperately to see him back doing thejob those who are desperately to see him back doing the job he was elected to. Absolutely, and my thoughts and the thoughts of the house are with boris and his family at this sad time. We are wishing him well, everybodys prayers are there as well. This is the Prime Minister, the big figure that everybody knows, a larger than life the big figure that everybody knows, a la rger than life character, the big figure that everybody knows, a larger than life character, it brings it home when somebody like boris is struck down. Of course, our thoughts are for all those suffering with coronavirus. It really brings it home. At the Prime Minister, who would ever have expected that . But the Prime Minister. We are hearing from those who sit alongside borisjohnson in the cabinet, speaking to michael gove about the fa ct speaking to michael gove about the fact that foreign secretary Dominic Raabis fact that foreign secretary dominic raab is the first among equals at the moment, leading things from the front, but constitutionally it feels like a very strange time. How do things function at a time like this when we are living through a time which feels very unprecedented . Dominic raab gopperth uncle from the Prime Minister, he is the first secretary of state, he is the chosen one secretary of state, he is the chosen one dominic raab got the phone call from the Prime Minister. He is in charge and will be running it, day to day. Government will always continue, the people are there, the supporters there, whatever happens, no matter how bad, the country government continues. The advisers are there, there are other people stepping in. As we have seen each night, government continues. We wish the Prime Minister well, a speedy recovery, i dont think it may be as quick as one expects, but we had to get him back at the helm, that in the meantime government will continue, people pull together. Their arson big beasts ready to help and assistance have been doing, but we always know, no matter what is thrown at this country, this country will always continue and always do the right thing to get us to the right spot where we need to be. We had to get beyond coronavirus, we had to get beyond coronavirus, we had to get beyond coronavirus, we had to make sure we do the best. This is a pandemic, the world is suffering together and we do know that this country will always pull together in our hour of need, and this is our hour of need where we had to support each other, look after each other, listen to the advice and stick by the advice government has given us. Please, people, stay at home. Look after yourselves, isolate, lets get beyond it. The sooner we do that, the sooner we are beyond it. But government always continues, that is what matters to this country. An hour ago we spoke to the Shadow Health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth, who was questioning what happens once parliament returns from the easter break and almost suggesting we might have to look at a Virtual Parliament, the use of the likes of skype, facetime and zoom to make sure things are as safe as possible. What are your thoughts . Obviously i have been dealing with issues like this, it is the first time i have ever had a Virtual Commission meeting looking at what possibilities we have available to us, what tools we need, we know 17 select committees in that meeting so far, we know the technology for virtual select committees have been working and we are progressing to what they need will be on the 21st, because in the end we are not sure what the position will be. We know the house will return, it is how many people are needed in the house, whether it will be to extend the recess or not, but we will only make thatjudgment when recess or not, but we will only make that judgment when we recess or not, but we will only make thatjudgment when we get nearer and it will be making the rightjudgment to make sure people are safe, taking the right health advice, if it needs a virtual element, everything will be on offer and looked at but that decision will be taken as we get nearer that time. I wonder if it will be harder to get your voice heard ina will be harder to get your voice heard in a Virtual Parliament or a real parliament, that is something we will have to look at if it does happen. We might use it to switch people off you could meet mps who are causing you difficulty you could mute mps. You spoke personally and powerfully about your understanding of who the Prime Minister isnt his desire to get back to normal. Whatever your political feelings, back to normal. Whatever your politicalfeelings, whether back to normal. Whatever your political feelings, whether you voted for him not, he is a figurehead and him being able to come out the other side of this virus would be a really powerful message for so many people . Absolutely, and this goes beyond politics, this is about people who work with him, people who know him. You have to admire him. He is a big beast, a la rger than life you have to admire him. He is a big beast, a larger than life character and that is why it will be the bigger shock. We will get beyond this, he has to get fit and well and back to leading the country and it does not matter what Political Party you are, everybody is united in wishing him well. He has the support and backing, we want a Prime Minister fit and backing, we want a Prime Ministerfit and and backing, we want a Prime Minister fit and well, back in downing street and people are wishing him well. That is the good thing about politics. When it needs to be, people come together, we are seeing people come together. It is a sad time, a sad time for the country. Everybody now knows somebody who has been affected with coronavirus, and i would say you have got from Prince Charles to the Prime Minister, this holds no balance. This affects everybody. That is why we have to look after each other and support each other, by isolating, staying at home and doing the right thing that is expected of us. Sir lindsay hoyle, lovely to speak to you and thank you for that really positive message to finish up this morning. It is affecting people on the front line as well, we will talk about that now. Flags at three of liverpools most prominent buildings have been lowered to half mast in tribute to a staff nurse at aintree hospital, who died on friday from coronavirus. Liz glanister was described by her colleagues as a hero in every sense of the word, who dedicated her life to caring for others. Were joined now from liverpool by jayne otoole, who was looked after by liz while having chemotherapy. Good morning, jayne, thank you for joining us. Just tell us a little bit about how and why you met liz . was admitted to aintree with a brain tumourand was admitted to aintree with a brain tumour and had had chemotherapy. Liz looked after me on the day ward. She was just off she was just amazing. Like all the nurses, they are all amazing, but she had such a warmth about her. We got talking one day andi about her. We got talking one day and i said to her, you dont have remind me of my nan. My nan was italian and liz had italian heritage as well. A couple of weeks later she did something on the ward and i said to her, liz, you arejust like my nan and she shouted across the ward, you could at least have said i was like your mum, not your nan that is what she was like, she just brought humour in my darkest times. She would always be laughing. She was so caring. She would ask about your children every time i went in, she would ask me to show photos of them to other patients and she would be saying, isnt he gorgeous . She got a conversation started and that carried on bent every time i went m, carried on bent every time i went in, iwould carried on bent every time i went in, i would say to people how are you . We all got to know each other. She was such a warm person and i am heartbroken, i am she was such a warm person and i am heartbroken, iam not she was such a warm person and i am heartbroken, i am not scared to admit that. I was heartbroken when i found out. She was more thanjust admit that. I was heartbroken when i found out. She was more than just my nurse, she was. I only knew her for a year, the chief that like a friend. It is really shocking to hear news like that about someone that you are clearly very fond of. Yeah, i was. I that you are clearly very fond of. Yeah, iwas. Ifeel guilty that you are clearly very fond of. Yeah, i was. Ifeel guilty that that you are clearly very fond of. Yeah, i was. I feel guilty that i feel like this. Her family needs support and i have people asking how iam,i support and i have people asking how i am, i dont think that its right, ijust want i am, i dont think that its right, i just want her family to get that support but it is nice that people are thinking of me, that is a credit to liz that i feel like this. I am really upset, i really am. to liz that i feel like this. I am really upset, i really am. I also understand one of the things you bonded over was football . Yes, she was a big blue like me. My husband arrange for me to go to see the team train and meet Duncan Ferguson and the first person i wanted to show the first person i wanted to show the photo to was liz, and she was going, oh, he is gorgeous she was just so funny. That was a real bonus for me. We had talked about so many people from the nhs, doctors, nurses, whoever they are, who are putting their lives on the line for all others. What is your message to them and, i guess, to us . Well, i have always been very grateful to my doctors and nurses. I have been on wards where they have not been thanked. Forgiving medicine, whatever. The patients just thanked. Forgiving medicine, whatever. The patientsjust didnt thank them. I couldnt believe that. But now i think we have to just. To me, they are like gods. I cant even explain how grateful i am and i wa nt to even explain how grateful i am and i want to say to people, stay in, let them do theirjob with what they have at the moment, just stay in and keep safe so you dont have to end up keep safe so you dont have to end up in hospital and be another patient, because they dont need any more, they need to get on with the job enhance now. You mentioned a brain tumour, how are you doing . am ok, i am brain tumour, how are you doing . am ok, iam in brain tumour, how are you doing . am ok, i am in remission at the moment, which is brilliant considering the night that they found that my family was told i would not wake up. That was 18 months ago. And when i woke up they told me i would be permanently disabled and i got over that. I had an eight month old baby and a two year old at the time, the Ripple Effect was huge, it affected everybody. But i am doing ok. Thanks to liz and all the lovely stuff on her ward. To liz and all the lovely stuff on herward. I to liz and all the lovely stuff on her ward. I could not have done it without them. All the lovely staff. I hope they are watching. Jayne paying tribute to liz glenister, a long standing nurse at aintree hospital. She sounds like a superstar, what fantastic memories. It is so sad to hear about the loss of people who have made such a big impact, but thankfully some positive stories are coming out of some of the darker situations. Remember they we re the darker situations. Remember they were asking for volunteers, 750,000. Some will be starting work today and we will talk about that shortly. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. That is a lovely picture. If im not mistaken, it is blenheim palace, sentin mistaken, it is blenheim palace, sent in by rebecca. The forecast for many of us today is after a chilly start, and it has been chilly, some others seeing pockets of frost, we are looking at sunny spells for many areas. There is an exception to that in the shape of this weather front which is introducing thicker cloud and potentially a spot of rain or two in the outer hebrides, accompanied by brisk wind. With High Pressure firmly in charge, any Early Morning mist and fog is lifting quite nicely and a fair bit of sunshine. If you are heading out for your permitted exercise this afternoon in scotland, the pollen levels are low here, a bit of sunshine away from the west. Northern ireland, budget pollen levels, lots of dry weather and a bit more cloud across the north west. For england and wales, pollen levels are high, bear that in mind. We have more cloud coming from the south, across the Channel Islands, South West England, southern counties, that could produce an isolated shower but that will be about it. Temperatures higher than yesterday, nine in lerwick to 20 or 21 towards the south east. This evening and overnight, this weather front evening and overnight, this weather fro nt m oves evening and overnight, this weather front moves south eastwards, it will have some heavy and persistent rain for a time across north west scotla nd for a time across north west scotland and there will be more cloud generally than last night. Not as cold. But if you are looking for the supermoon tonight, some of us should see it because there will be some holes in the cloud. Any mist and fog performing overnight will lift quite readily tomorrow, we can see how the cloud is still there, but not particularly thick. The weather front sink southwards. Again, the rain turn small patches so brightening in the North West Highlands and ahead of it, still some sunny spells. Through the day, we could see more cloud across southern parts of england, south wales and the midlands, that could produce a shower which could be heavy and thundery. Temperature wise, 22 or 23 the top temperature, we are seeing Clear Conditions coming in across the north. The week weather front is still with us on thursday as a badge of pride, to the south of that for england and wales, drier, brighter, some sunny skies. The North Highlands sing some sunshine. A temperature of six foot thursday for their wake. Coming south, temperatures about 20 or 21. It is all change for good friday, a weather front coming in from the atla ntic weather front coming in from the atlantic will be moving west to east and with it bringing thicker cloud and with it bringing thicker cloud and also some outbreaks of rain. The driest conditions are likely to be in the south east for the longest, where we will have sunshine. Here too, temperatures up to 21, but pushing further north, seven to about 12. Changes are referred. Carroll, thank you. The easter weekend is ahead. Hello, this is breakfast with Louise Minchin and dan walker. The Prime Minister remains in intensive care this morning, where he is being treated for coronavirus. Boris johnson seen here applauding frontline workers on thursday evening was admitted to St Thomas Hospital on sunday night. His medical team moved him yesterday evening when his symptoms worsened. The minister for the Cabinet Office, michael gove told us the Prime Minister was being well looked after. His own doctors had given him clear advice at every stage which the Prime Minister has followed. And the Prime Minister loves this country. He wants to do his very, very best for us and thats one of the reasons why hes made sure that hes been involved in the Decision Making and hes chaired meetings but hes also had a stripped back diary and thats reflected the medical device that the Prime Minister has had. But ultimately, i think, one of the things about this new and you know, uniquely challenging virus, is that we must all follow the appropriate medical advice and all of us are discovering that this virus has an malignancy and malevolence that is truly frightening. And Scottish First minister Nicola Sturgeon says she is sending him every good wish 439 people died in hospital from the effects of coronavirus on monday. Extraordinary response. One of those who came forward was stacey walsh, she joins us now along with catherine johnson, chief executive of the Royal Voluntary Service. Good morning to both of you. Stacy, i will come to you in a moment but catherine, what did you think when you got so many people signing up . The Royal Voluntary Service has been inspiring volunteers to step forward for 81 year so i was not at all surprised by how energetic and enthusiastic everybody was. At the end of the day, we are all facing the same challenge and peoples love and outpouring of support for the nhs means three quarters of a Million People felt they could help and thats just amazing. Million people felt they could help and thatsjust amazing. Stacey, liz louis said, you are one of those, still working, you are a teacher so how are you fitting everything in at the moment, what are you expecting today . We physically are in the building here on a rota basis, first and foremost i am a teacher and i am at work today as you can see but when im not here i can put the alerts on to be available for the nhs. You particularly wanted to do this because you were taken ill, wont you were much younger . This because you were taken ill, wont you were much younger . this because you were taken ill, wont you were much younger . I was 11, wont you were much younger . I was 11, iwas wont you were much younger . I was 11, i was hospitalised with quite a serious lung issue and before that id spent my life and medication, i didnt get involved in physical activity, i had to sit out of pe at school so i think my life would have beena school so i think my life would have been a lot different if it wasnt for the amazing doctors and nurses at the Birmingham Childrens hospital who changed my life, really. Im sure theres many people watching and listening, stacey, feeling they want to give Something Back as well. Any idea what youll be doing, have you been assigned any rosier . No, i havent had anything come through yet but i said i would do whatever is needed, whether thats driving people to appointments, telephone conversations, just waiting, really, to see what comes through. conversations, just waiting, really, to see what comes through. I expect, catherine got lots of people will be waiting at home thinking right, what doi waiting at home thinking right, what do i have to do so how will it work . So over the last week we have authenticated and checked all 750,000 volunteers who stepped forward , 750,000 volunteers who stepped forward, so they are all ready to go and as you can hearfrom stacey, they are very enthusiastic and are telling me every day how enthusiastic they are so over the weekend, we very quietly got on with testing the system because obviously, you appreciate, the system has been developed by a number of organisations including ourselves, and we wanted to make sure it worked in the way it had been designed and very happily, it does so we step forward today with confidence to ask for ref errors and when i say that, i mean nhs professionals, whether they are working in the hospital or community, 111, pharmacists particularly, and colleagues and local authorities. We are open for business. So you can get onto the portal, you can refer it in, the original1. 5 portal, you can refer it in, the original 1. 5 Million People who were identified as being at high risk, weve talked about those previously on this programme and others, really important to get to them and help them stay at home. And to stay safe and shielded so we can shield the nhs. Thanks to the overwhelming amount of volunteers who stepped forward , amount of volunteers who stepped forward, we are actually able to extend to a further 8 Million People. We need the referrals and once those start coming in i can assure all of those fantastic volu nteers assure all of those fantastic volunteers out there that we will beat matching you up and you will be checking in and chatting, you will be community responding and doing shopping and collecting medicines for people, and you may be driving some of these people to Health Appointments because during the crisis, its really important that people who got Underlying Health conditions still get their ongoing medical treatment. And for some of you, you may well be transporting equipment but weve designed all of the rules with Health Professionals come pharmacists and weve thought about the safety of the volunteers so we are really excited and absolutely privileged to help shield and protect the wonderful nhs. Catherine, im fascinated listening to you, talking about this army of volu nteers to you, talking about this army of volunteers like stacey, ready to go. But give us an idea of the huge logistical task of first of all, of vindicating all there a Million People and then trying to assign various roles. It must be huge error . It is a mammoth effort but as isaid error . It is a mammoth effort but as i said earlier, we see the best of humanity when the chips are down. It must be a huge effort. Everyone wa nts to it must be a huge effort. Everyone wants to step forward, give hope and what weve done, by working with good psalm, weve been able to extend an existing Digital Solution to meet the needs of matching volu nteers to meet the needs of matching volunteers so thats been very exciting, very dynamic in its development. But weve been very well supported as we have been by the Health Care Professionals in nhs england. So its determined great that has got us through 750,000 volunteers. To authenticate those under normal circumstances would ta ke under normal circumstances would take months but we dont have months, we want to shield the most at risk patients now. And therefore its been a massive team effort. I wrote to all my staff last night and to my existing volunteers who turn up to my existing volunteers who turn up every day, even now, to support existing clients and i said i dont think i could ever be more proud of my team at Royal Voluntary Service, the people we work with, and the country as a whole for stepping forward to support the nhs. Stacey, youre at work today but effectively youre at work today but effectively youre on duty, awaiting instructions, are you . No, when im at work i have the alert turned off and when at work i have the alert turned off and when i leave work i turn the alerts back on. What are you most looking forward to, is it meeting and looking after patients or what . Yes, i mean, and a very social person so yes, i mean, and a very social person so i think being able to provide support to people who are isolated, that sort of thing, i really am looking forward to and i think its really important that as a Public Sector worker, we stand alongside the nhs, showing unity between us. So im really happy that ican between us. So im really happy that i can help. Stacey, thank you very much for talking to us. Enjoy your normaljob. And i hope you get some work to do, youre clearly like many other people, really keen to get involved in catherine, thank you for all your incredible effort over the last few days and i hope these three quarters of a Million People can make a genuine difference to so many who need help across the uk. Thank you. Thank you both so much. Due to all of those people who have volunteered. Its 8 41am. Coronavirus has almost brought the Property Market to a standstill. Thats according to new figures. Nina has been looking in to this, and at your questions. Good morning. Good morning to you. Yes, the property website zoopla has reported a 70 reduction in new property sales agreed since the pm told us only to leave the house when necessary. The government guidance is complicated; no viewings allowed, Estate Agents told to close . Yet sales are allowed to progress and you can move but only if you have to. Thank you so much for the dozens and dozens thank you so much for the dozens and d oze ns of thank you so much for the dozens and dozens of questions that have come in. First question from wills, regulation stage you can only move house were reasonably necessary, what does that mean . We sought the advice of the solicitors slater and gordon and they told us if contracts have exchanged and that the chain is unable to agree alternatives the move can go ahead, equally if contracts have not yet exchanged but a failure to move would cause severe hardship such as homelessness, you should keep moving. Annoyingly, this leaves a massive grey area and the advice is to keep talking to your solicitor about what is and isnt allowed. Rachel asked, she said she had signed for a new has search is done, property vacant, she said should i carry on, in her words on the agreed price or will i wait to see if the market devalues . Really interesting response from the the Estate Agents in london and they said its difficult to predict what prices will do. Yes its obvious the transactions are lower but there is no certainty prices will fall, if youve agreed on your dream home and youve agreed on your dream home and you think you will be there for more than two years, you should definitely proceed. They say even if prices slip in the short term they are still set to increase over the next five years. Thats good advice. Duncan byatt for the first time, due to move in mid may, really interesting. Loads of questions like this, he said we have a mortgage but we are struggling to sign it because we are struggling to sign it because we need a witness. How can we have a third Party Witness given social isolation . We put this to slater and gordon solicitors and they said electronic mortgage deeds are beginning to emerge but the majority still do require a wet signature. So there is nothing to prevent you from arranging a witness to take witnessing to take place over a video call, the witness must be able to clearly see the document, recognise it when they receive it, they should be able to see it as you signing the document and then as usual, you send the document to the witness to sign, it will take a bit longer but obviously, its keeping to social distancing rules, longer but safer. The advice from the experts, where ever you are in the chain, buying, selling, exchanging, looking to move, there will inevitably be delays. Local authorities, solicitors, Estate Agents, all working at reduced capacity at the moment. And so, with so much in this strange new world, the advice is try if you can, to be patient. I think thats good advice. I think most people accept we are living in strange times and all the normality of life like buying and selling houses and all that, the normal transactions are going to ta ke normal transactions are going to take longer and things will eventually, hopefully, return to normal but it will take time. Yes, i think people are willing to be patient and lots of different areas of life, but thats good advice, saying prices might fluctuate but long term, they should return to the sta ble long term, they should return to the stable right they were coming to, post brexit, in the months before the coronavirus. Just keep cool and dont make any big life decisions at the moment thats very good advice lets hold on the life decisions. Its lets hold on the life decisions. Its tempting, isnt it . Thank you. She is our advice guru. Hold back on life decisions, everyone its 8 45am. Sally, a reversal of decisions at liverpool . 8 45am. Sally, a reversal of decisions at liverpool . I wonder if theyve been listening to nina recently . They made a fairly big life decision a few days ago which they reversed. Liverpool have apologised and reversed their decison to place some of their staff on the governments coronavirusJob Retention scheme. Chief exective peter moore seen here on the right put an open letter to fans on social media, saying they were truly sorry and theyd reached the wrong conclusion. He also said liverpool would find alternative ways to operate while there are no football matches. Obviously, thats their source of revenue, the money coming in. Basically, when they announced this, the seventh richest club in the world, there was a huge backlash from fans and people all over the world. It went down very, very badly. They arent the only club to suggest doing this and using the government scheme, should tell you totte n ha m , government scheme, should tell you tottenham, newcastle, bournemouth, amongst those using the government scheme but liverpool changed their mind. Saying they are not going to do it, a source close to the club suggest this morning simply all they we re suggest this morning simply all they were doing was basically looking at how to operate in unprecedented times, you know, we are living in a times, you know, we are living in a time that we dont know whats coming down the line. They were suggesting any organisation with no revenue flowing in and millions of pounds of expenditure every week faces an uncertain future and its responsible to look at every, every way of supporting the business because basically, we dont know and they dont know what is coming next. What they have done that was made a com plete what they have done that was made a complete u turn and reversed that decision that has been announced on saturday. Sally, thank you for bringing us right up to date. Heres a statistic for you. Question this yourself if you have a partner, how long do you spend with them . In ordinary times, couples spend on average, two and a half hours together each day, according to research by the open university. But now in these unusual times, we spend 15 or 16 of our waking hours together so, how are you coping . Are the kids driving you mad or have you forged some unusual friendships . Brea kfasts Jayne Mccubbin has been finding out. Lockdown. For all a chore, for most a bore. For some, living arrangements that ordinarily might never have happened. For sue and ian in wirral, lets just say they happened on fast forward. Tell me all about this fantastically fast romance. Oh, yeah, go on then, sue. Always let a lady talk first. We met through online dating. And it was actually five months ago today that we met. Hit it off, i think, straight away. Oh, we did, yeah. And when all this stuff started to happen about covid 19, and i said, shall i move in with you then . Just a few short months in, they are in lockdown and loving it. And the good news is. We havent killed each other yet right, ok, then. Closer to the camera, you can tell me, does anything irritate you about the other yet . Careful. Hes very tidy. Thats good. Im very untidy. Ah. So we complement each other, dont we . Perfect, perfect. Long may your romance last through these trying times. Both im sure it will. The Silver Lining of this Global Pandemic are the very many special bonds being born. And heres another courtesy of. Tommy. And. Hello, nana. Hello . Grandma and grandson who are self isolating together. How the heck are you . Im good. How is your grandson treating you . Hes brilliant. Is he really . I didnt pay her to say that either. Jean has dementia and the decision to sit out lockdown side by side was based pure and simple on one thing. My love for nana, really. Its been a learning curve. I didnt think i had it in me to, you know, be a full time carer, but evidently when you love someone itjust kicks in naturally, i guess. Its made me realise that spending a lot of time with nana is actually really fun. So theres been dancing. I just want to dance with you. Go on, nana, you can twirl now. Its become a nightly thing now having a glass of wine and a little dance. Theres been hairdressing. I hear that tommy has been doing your hair . He has. Hes going to be taking over before too long. Not today, though. I should have probably done it. And theres been fine dining. Hes a very good cook. Its a lot of italian food, isnt it . Yeah. Bolognese, lasagne. Spaggy bol. What do you call macaroni cheese . Rocco mackey. As soon as i put a meal down in front of her, shell say, youre going to make a woman very happy one day, tom. Every time, without fail. Forgetting every time without fail youre gay. That nana, that nana give them a wave, nana. These are the sprinklings of gold dust to be found in dark days and there are the unlikely friendships that have popped up in the most unlikely places. Hello, nadine. Hi. I believe you have an airbnb guest that is now permanently one of the family. Yes, here she is. This is nicki. This singer songwriter from new york would ordinarily be touring the world living out of suitcases, but with all gigs cancelled, all flights cancelled, nicki is stuck in a spare room in essex and the gigs are now virtual. Can you give me an idea of how life in nadines spare room compares to life globe trotting as a singer . I actuallyjust feel like im one of the family right now. Itsjust like im one of the kids. How is it having an International Singer in the spare room, nadine . Its actually quite cool. Sometimes shes doing her concerts at, like, midnight. And the next door neighbours are like, is nicki going to be singing again tonight . Take care, both of you. Look after each other. Thank you. Youll be back singing outside of essex soon, im sure of it. Youre going to sing a Little Something for you. Go, do it. What the world needs now is love, sweet love. Its friendship and family which is keeping people going, new bonds as well as old ties, homes, like these, safe harbours across the land. Very soon, we are all going to need grandson tommy in our lives when we cant go to the hairdressers. Can we borrow him . I need someone with a two metre pair of scissors, safe distance. Its 8 53am.
