He was convicted of inciting religious hatred and encouraging terrorism. He was sentenced to a four and a half year term and he is due to be released halfway through his sentence three weeks tomorrow. That is very quick in terms of the timeframe for pushing through legislation. The government is planning to do that. It has to get through the house of commons and house of lords. This sunday will mark 32 years since Helen Mccourt went missing on her way home from work in merseyside. Pub landlord, ian simms, was jailed for her murder, but has never revealed where her body is. Yesterday he was released from prison. Helens mum, marie, has spent years campaigning to deny killers parole unless they reveal where their victims bodies are. Now legislation, known as helens law will be introduced. Marie has been speaking exclusively to breakfasts Jayne Mccubbin about why, in the case of her daughters killer, its come too late. When i got the call this morning, i knew what thats what it was going to be. I said, i cant believe that theyd do this. Marie mccourt has long dreaded this phone call. Just four days before the 32nd anniversary of her daughters murder, her killer ian simms was released from jail. Its helens anniversary on sunday. Ijust think, could they not have shown just a little bit of sensitivity and compassion . Helen mccourts murder made history. Simms was one of the very first people in the uk convicted on dna evidence without the discovery of her body. Part of helens bloodstained earring was found in his pub, another in the boot of his car, fibres and blood found on clothing and towels dumped miles away. Yet simms refused to admit his guilt or reveal where her body was hidden. For years, Marie Mccourt petitioned for helens law no body, no parole. And last year the government finally agreed. Laws will be introduced to ensure that the parole system recognises the pain to victims and their families caused by offenders refusing to disclose information relating to their crimes. But the legislation has stalled. So for marie, that commitment has come too late. If it hadnt have been for a general election and brexit. And brexit, yes. And a number of other things. It would have gone through. It would have gone through. It came so close. So close, yes. It must feel brutal to you. Its yeah. I can go through all of that, the part that upsets me is that i cant give helen one last goodbye. I cant. The only thing i want is to have my child back. Whatever tiny bits and pieces there are, its my daughters, and i want them back. And i cant have them now. All marie has is a Memorial Bench in the familys church, in the village where simms once ran his pub. She cant bear to leave this place. 32 years on, she still organises searches for helens body, the last in october, the next later this month. Simms wakes up this morning in a hostel on a tag. Hes forbidden from entering a huge area spanning miles around the mccourts family home, notjust to avoid him coming into contact with them, but, the family tell me, to stop him returning to helens body. I kept telling myself im Strong Enough to deal with that. 0k, it may not benefit my case, but it will hopefully benefit all the people who are going through the same thing as me, and for the families who will also follow on. Because i know that pain theyre going through, and i wouldnt wish it on anyone. You came so close. Yes. So close. I didnt think a heart could break twice. But mine did. Two days ago. We have been on dry land for about two weeks. How are you feeling . Quite good. Our hands and feet have recovered. We are always fascinated by hardship. What was the worst of it . We spoke to you immediately afterwards, and i guess the adrenaline is pumping them. But what was the damage to the body . You do get blisters on your hands. Can we get a closeup . Is that a combination of the saltwater and just rubbing on the oars . Exactly. Ooh, your feet my feet we re exactly. Ooh, your feet my feet were horrible. Defeat, the hands and your backside is pretty sore, especially from the salt. You can imagine. Lets talk to lachlan. No one blames you for being out there. Do you think youre recovering a bit more swiftly than your brothers because you can do it in some sunshine . The sum is definitely helping, yeah. The sun is happening. What made you decide to stay out there for a while . happening. What made you decide to stay out there for a while . I have a few months until i need to be back for my studies, so i thought i might as well try and get a job on a yacht and hopefully sail back across the atlantic. That is the plan. Good luck with that. Tell us more about motivation. For those who didnt hear the story, why did you do it . The original idea came from lachlan. We have always been into adventures. And we all signed up quickly. Then the charities became quite a big motivation. We were raising money for two charities, feedback madagascar and children first. They we re madagascar and children first. They were a huge motivation for us. We realised that for every mile that we we re realised that for every mile that we were rowing, we were giving to people freshwater for life. When you have a motivation like that, tell me how that helps when you are on about 35 days, nine hours in three minutes. You are brothers. I know you get on well. You had arguments over porridge occasionally. So when you have a motivation like that, how does it help not punch each other when it gets a bit annoying . Its incredible, especially the night rowing when you wake up and the last thing you want to do is put on your foul weather gear and step into the wet and the cold. After how many hours sleep . On average four hours every 24 hours. Often in families, there are people who have defined positions, particularly between spouses. Like one is the pacifier and one is the naughty one. Did any of that play out in the boat . Lachlan was quite a good mediator. He is wise beyond his years. Who is the oldest . I am. Lachlan is the youngest. Lachlan, is that true . Did youngest. You serenaded the country when we spoke to you. I had a ukulele. Yeah, we had some battle scars. Music helps in any circumstance, doesnt it . Definitely. Our iphone cables broke after five days, so we had 30 days without any music, or we were rationing music to one hour a day. And it is amazing how having that one hour can really boost you. It a cts one hour can really boost you. It acts as a great treat to get you through a tough part of the rowing. And it meant we got the instruments out more than we would have done. The last thing you want to do when you are hungry, exhausted and tired is get a set of bagpipes out. But when you havent got anything else to do. Well, lachlan has made it clear that he needs a break from you two. How much time are you spending together now that you are back home . We have had one night apart. That is lovely to hear.
