In an eighth title for leeds . And hopefully one day find a cure. General, people approve of harry and meghans decision but it is more i dont like the limelight, significantly supported amongst but the amount of support ive been offered and had is overwhelming. I cant really describe it. Millennials than amongst the older age group, but also significantly here, should they have told the queen first . Almost unanimous, 71 its quite embarrassing said yes, combined total, they to the point that people should have spoken to the queen will do anything for you. First. Above us and it will pick up some despite the wet start for some, rather potent areas of low pressure showers will gradually ease down. Let us look at what is happening at and spin them towards us. Each one the moment. Longer spells of rain will bring a spell of some heavy across england, england and wales, that will push into the north sea by rain and strong winds. It could be the end of the morning. One or two quite a stormy week ahead, showers to the south. Scattered
showers to the south. Scattered showers for scotland and northern particularly during the early half of the week. Some heavy rain at ireland, they will be wintry in the north of scotland, dropping snow on times before things turned drier the higher rates. Throughout the towards the end of the week once afternoon, fewer showers, more of you will be dry and sunny. A chilly again. Out there today, compared with yesterday it is going to be a start in scotland, each led and things turning fresher across the drier day in the end. Lots of south, but still double figures and above what they should be for the showers around at the moment. Not time of year. This afternoon quite as breezy as it has been, but temperatures up and down, showers you will have to get rid of some of we re temperatures up and down, showers were from west to east. Under clear skies it will be cold enough for the outbreaks of rain we have at some frost, especially in the north of the uk and it could be icy in scotla nd of the uk and it could be icy in present. They are just easing across scotland tomorrow morning. Even parts of central and Eastern England though tomorrow might begin sunday, it isa but some further heavy burst into though tomorrow might begin sunday, it is a case of do not let your guard down, things will be different wales, Northern England and plenty by the time you return home from of showers in the west of scotland work. This developing area of low and Northern Ireland, turning wintry pressure, storm brendan will bring over the Higher Ground. Notice deteriorating condition throughout the west throughout the day. A sunny through the day the batch of more start for many, showers developing prolonged showers through these during the morning, widespread gales Central Regions continuing to push in the afternoon, and by the end of off. Clear skies for many, fewer the morning Northern Ireland and showers around and more sunshine scotla nd the morning Northern Ireland and scotland getting the brunt of that. Into the afternoon. As i said, winds there could be snow over the higher
ground in scotland. The wind will be lighter than yesterday. You could call it a Getting Better kind accompanies it but the temperatures are academic given the strength of of day. It will feel that little bit the wind. Tomorrow evening, 5pm, there could be some travel fresher later on as temperatures drop under the clear skies. Clear disruption around, bridges, skies tonight enza frost for a time. Restrictions, fairy cancellations. There could be some damage. Not only a few showers pushing eastwards in heavy rain but winds gusting from the breeze overnight as it starts to 50, 60 heavy rain but winds gusting from 50,60 and 70 mph and possibly 80 pick up once again, and so mph in scotland, enough to cause some damage. Stay tuned if you are temperatures will be a little bit lower, especially across the south, on the move. Some of the wettest and compared with last night. If we head windiest weather will be confined to into the monday morning rush hour, a east anglia and the south east by chillier start but all highs to the the time we hit a late evening but the time we hit a late evening but the winds remain strong through the west. This area of low pressure the night for the north of scotland. Brief respite from all the fat as we first big one to come our way is go into monday night, but by tuesday storm brendan. It is set to bring morning, the next weather system is just waiting in the wings. After some very heavy rain across the west some morning sunshine, more rain of ireland during the morning. For spreads northwards, turns to snow in most, one day starts off fine with scotland, but it will be another sunshine for many. A little bit on chilly day in the north, milder conditions for england and wales. The cool side but temperatures
but we see the strongest of the picking up. By the end of the winds for tuesday, 15 or 60 mph. It afternoon we will see gales developing widely, some heavy burst will be quite a lively week. Not of rain could cause a few issues, quite as lively as we have seen in and temperatures will be on the dubai, Lightning Strike for you. I know that ben used to stay there. Rise. Gales, but winds could be touching 60 or 70 and towards the north west of scotla nd 60 or 70 and towards the north west the flooding is ongoing after some of scotland 80 or 85 mph as we head storms during the night. Just for into the evening, as all the rain you, here is that Lightning Strike rushes eastwards. Into the evening yet again in dubai through across the far north west of scotland, some travel disruption yesterday. It hit the top of those certainly possible. Could be some amazing towers, right across the minor flooding certainly possible. Could be some minorflooding as certainly possible. Could be some minor flooding as well. The rain city. Yes, i was looking at the largely clears for all but the south east corner as we head into pictures yesterday, incredible all the evening. Overnight it does go, of the flooding. And you know the reason why they do not have drains but there is the next weather system and sewers . They get rain so heading away, and into tuesday looks infrequently, so when it does rain like some the strongest winds. The it sits on the surface. But when it heaviest rain this time will be does come, it comes in bucket loads. Across the southern half of the country, winds touching 50, maybe 60 two months worth of rainfall mph. Soa yesterday the main road through country, winds touching 50, maybe 60 mph. So a bit of a lively week of dubai were shot at one point. Yes, whether coming ahead. Thank you very

But time is running out 12 contestants, so we can probably expect a couple more coming in. On his business, his personal life and once they have coupled up, this and his marriage. Heres a clip. Is where they come to cuddle up. Im begging you, just. It wouldnt be a series of love island if there was no drama. Just give me another shot. You know what, howard . Say yes. What . No sleeping on the sofa this year, i think you are the most annoying theyve got the dog house. Person i have ever met. Obviously, the islanders i hate being with you, i hate want to look their best, but this year, for the first time, looking at you and if i had my way, the boys have their i would never see you again. Own dressing room. Looking great thats cause youre mad. Youre mad, and it makes sense. You can punch me if you want. 0h, thanks. Hey, i was ready for it. Of course, this is the iconic fire pit. This is where romances are made commotion. Or hearts are broken. I dont even want to touch you. Oh, ive got a text 0h thats going well, then the genius of it is that all those things that she says, we are now in the beach hut, you know, you are the most annoying which is where all of the islanders person i have ever met come to make their confessions that is actually at the centre to. That camera. Of the film and yet, we can exclusively reveal you are completely riveted by this character as his life unspools in spectacularfashion. The thing that the Safdie Brothers whats in the fridge. Do is manage to make a movie that actually has the same 0k, ok, i think i will make a sandwich. Kind of dramatic format as abel ferraras, film bread, cheese, butter, ham. Bad lieutenant, which is set over tasty a fixed period of time in which everything goes wrong sort of sequentially. You stay with Adam Sandlers so, that is your behind the scenes character all the way through it tour of the love island villa. As he makes bad decision it is absolutely boiling after bad decision. Here in south africa. He is addicted to gambling, only one thing for it. He is a liar, he is a cheat, aah but he believes that there is a way out of this situation its always just one step ahead of him. I thought he was absolutely terrific and it reminded me of how much i sat that was Roisin Hastie from bbc there watching punch drunk love newsbeat. Much more from her on thinking, i cannot believe this is the man who has made so many radio one during the week. Comedies that ive never found lets discuss all things love island funny because the genius of this now with superfan Eleanor Williams and entertainmentjournalist, is is that what it is it taps caroline frost, whos into the fact that there in our london newsroom. Is something about adam sandler that is deeply unsettling. Good morning to you both. Eleanor, there is something about him that is kind of, you know, worrying and anxiety ridden, let me begin with you. Super fan. And this really, really captures that. You were watching that video and you i think the Safdie Brothers are really extraordinary film makers. Said this is super exciting. You are their film making is experiential. At the end of this movie, backin said this is super exciting. You are back in the mood. Yes, i didnt you will have to lie down. Realise until just now, you know, it kind of felt back in the mood. Yes, i didnt realise untiljust now, i very excited. There is something about like a claustrophobic panic attack and i say that in a good way. The setup, the music, the sunshine, in a good way eve ryo ne the setup, the music, the sunshine, everyone looks beautiful and chuckles. Wonderful, it is pure escapism,
but its absolutely isnt it . I know, i just not for everyone. Wonderful, it is pure escapism, isnt it . I know, ijust cannot help its not the kind of thing but wish i was there. Caroline, that where you say its friday night. Lets go and relax. Lets go watch uncut gems. Idea of escapism, given everything on the political agenda and on the because you will come out of this like, you know, news, this is what we need, isnt youre digging your nails into the palms of your hup. It . Quite right, there can be but i think that it should be Nothing Better as an antidote in nominated in all the awards. I think he should be january with those grey skies up for best actor. It is a really terrific cinematic experience. Outside, the ongoing political wow. Uncertainty, impending world war but it is, as i said, iii. We know that shows like death it is like having a panic attack for two hours. I am slightly stressed just listening to that in paradise to spectacularly well in i am really sorry. Thats. January and itv thought the same so, 1917. Thing, let us give people what they im going to see that this weekend. Want, and escape to blue skies, the yes. So, am i infora treat . Sea, swimming pools, and people you are. I mean, again, experiential cinema. So sam mendes, Walking Around falling in and out of world war one picture. The story is very, very simple. Love. That should go on the advert, at the beginning, the two lance corporals are told that what they have to do is to take caroline what is so appealing about a message across enemy lines the show for you then, eleanor . to a distant troop to say theres just think it is entertaining. I an attack that is going to happen love the drama, i think the and you need to call off the attack. Producers do a greatjob of setting that is basically the plot. The camera then follows them up producers do a greatjob of setting up these scenarios. And you end up in what appears to be real time, falling in love with these people. Because it appears to play out in a single shot. It doesnt its actually automatically from their initial vt is. They do not come across very a number of shots, you know, sequentially put together, well and you think that he or she
but it gives you the impression that youre just watching the action seems nasty or awful but by the end unfold absolutely before you without edit. You want to be their friends, you wa nt you want to be their friends, you want them to come back to london and it is brilliantly constructed and choreographed, fantastically call you up. How much do we believe shot by roger deakins. It has at its heart a central performance by george mackay, this is right . There are little who i have talked about videos about them being a certain on this show before. I said he is a real i think he is a real talent character and perhaps they are not and he is perfectly cast like that in real life. Are they not at the centre of this movie because his face has this playing roles in what is essentially mixture of innocence a drama . Yes, if you look at amber but also world weariness. We really get a sense through watching him from last year, she had a terrible that he is somebody who has been made old before his time. Vt and no one understood her sense as a theatrical experience, of humour. And she dragged greg there are three moments, at least, in which ijumped almost out of my chair. Across the finishing line. There can and yet, the real i think the real strength be an element of sort of scripting of the film is it makes you care about the characters. Or guiding people in the storylines obviously what youre seeing that will be good for the show to here is edited footage, but bear in mind when you see get people interested. that will be good for the show to get people interested. I like to the film in the cinema, pretend that does not happen. Those edits are not in there caroline, let me talk to you about the camera appears to be that. This is a bankable show for following them as they go on this mission against all the odds, itv, it gets the advertisers and it and we discover the landscape as they discover it. Gets a crucial market that perhaps yes does not watch much tv. It is a it is very, very immersive, terrific soundtrack, money for them, isnt it . Yes, the and i think youll i think youll find it i mean, enjoyable is not age group from 16 to 2a, who are quite the right word. Sure. Turning off the tv for everything else. We have lost them to youtube and other forms of platforms, but this is a show that goes against all of those trends and that is why itv are so keen to get them watching and perhaps get them on to other shows but its huge. But i think youll find it asa very, very powerful. Perhaps get them on to other shows as a result. I agree that perhaps we have come a long way from seven up yeah, absorbing and, yeah, definitely one to see. Seberg. Yes. And those first anatomical years of so, Kristen Stewart huge fan of Kristin Stewart. Both her and robert pattinson, who starred together big brother when people were really in the twilight movies. Innocents abroad. These people remember all that, years ago, when critics were sniffy understand how their instagram about those movies . Well, look how wrong accou nts understand how their instagram accounts work but in this day and they turned out to be. Age of people being thrown into the so here, she plastean seberg, cage, i would suggest that theres whos a famous actress, probably bad thing. Notjust was in Nouvelle Vague a bout de souffle, and then came back bankable for itv but also for the to hollywood and became investigated by and spied upon by the fbi people that go on, they get a social in a covert operation to discredit media profile that then lets them her because of her affiliation, because of her support flog all sorts of things afterwards, for the black panthers and her affiliation doesnt it . But not without with hakim jamal. Controversy. No, and the last few and in the clip we see here, together its two of them together yea rs we have controversy. No, and the last few years we have seen so many stories reading a script she has been given come out of love island, both in which is both referring front of the cameras and behind the to the script and to stuff which is happening in their personal life. Scenes. So, ithink front of the cameras and behind the scenes. So, i think what we will see heres a clip. You dont know me, mr rumson. Isa scenes. So, i think what we will see is a very careful sort of welfare by but theres not a woman itv, because they want to keep the on this earth who will make
you a better wife. Drama, they want to keep the narrative, the people interested, you ought to. But on the other hand they have an increasing duty of care and they i paid enough for you. Have accepted that responsibility. They have learned the lessons of i may be paid for, watching people go in and helped, but im not your property. Left to fend for themselves. And i you grab me unwanted like that again do not think we will see any exa m ples of and ill shoot you down like a dog. Do not think we will see any whered you get that . Examples of that. Eleanor, you talk a woman has her secrets. About ignoring some of the scripted elements or the forced storylines, that sort of thing, but as caroline now put that down or neither of us was describing, there is a lot of will have much of a wedding night. Controversy around it. Does that affect your enjoyment of the show . Two great performances. It does, and i think it has creaked actually, theres another great ina it does, and i think it has creaked in a little bit more in terms of performance in the film by Jack Oconnell who plays the fbi affecting my enjoyment. But caroline agent who is sent in to basically is correct, there needs to be that spy on and discredit her, level of care and particularly who starts to wrestle with his own conscience. Aftercare, because i think the villa the film is interesting. The director has a background in theatre and i think it isa aftercare, because i think the villa is a certain type of environment. Occasionally seems a little bit and then they are thrown into this theatrical, a little bit stagey, but it is a really, really interesting story about this crazy social media world, which i do horrible counter surveillance operation, you know, not think is the envy of most spying on somebody, lying people, i think that it is about to about them, trying to discredit them because of their political beliefs. Ta ke people, i think that it is about to take on, particularly as many of the co ntesta nts take on, particularly as many of the contestants are so young. Yes, and then there are questions about body and at the centre of it is a very, issue images that portrays everyone
very edgy, nervy, kind of electrifying performance issue images that portrays everyone is beautiful, some have been by Kristin Stewart, who captures that quality that makes, you know surgically enhanced, everyone is tanned, goes to the gym. This is the firstly, why it was that this person became a star, but also line up this year. That has an captures the vulnerability that they experience as they become paranoid about everyones watching effect on young people, doesnt it . Them, everyones spying on them yes, it is difficult because love and the truth is, they are. So although i think the film island has never claimed to be a itself is slightly flawed, i think the performances are really body positive show, so people know good and i think the story itself what we are signing up for. That is still bears retelling pa rt what we are signing up for. That is part of the escapism. Strides should and as i said, once again, great to see Kristin Stewart taking be made towards making it more body on a role that is challenging and difficult and different to you know, its almost positive, but having watched the as like both her and pattinson have different dvds and peoples types, gone out of their way to pursue projects that are admirable still tall dark and handsome. One and artistically based, and good for them said blonde and athletic. Until you yes. Cast people with more open mind on this and people looking for a certain personality type or nice and best out this week. Eyes, there is no point. Caroline, 0h . You have selected it remains on itv2, it is a niche this week little women. Yeah, it came out on boxing day and i just love it. Digital channel. Itv not putting it have you seen it yet . Yes. On their main channel, so they did you like it . Realise it has a certain appeal but i did not love it as much as i thought i was going to. Not for everyone. Absolutely, that oh,jane is very clever not to try to punch what did you not like . Sorry. Above its weight too soon, but i i thought it got better,
but i thought the first hour would think at some point it will could do with some subbing make thejump, perhaps and it was slow and dark and then, would think at some point it will make the jump, perhaps with an older set of contestants going in or some suddenly it sort of burst into light. 0k. Im taken aback. Im afraid. Sort of spin. But, yes, it is bafta i love saoirse ronan. I thought she was terrific. Shes great. Winning, it cleans up year after you didnt think because greta gerwig, year. They do not want to mess with who wrote and directed it, it and it is one of the jewels in who i thought did a brilliantjob i thought she wouldve been the itv crown. Good to talk to you, nominated recently as best director for it. I did you not get it caroline frost and Eleanor Williams, i felt sucked into the world, thank you both. Enjoy tonight. And i believed in the house and the environment if you are wanting to watch it and the landscape and the characters sta rts if you are wanting to watch it and the way in which she has starts tonight at 9pm on itv2. Reordered the time frame and thats it of the source so that we start from breakfast for today. Further on and we come back. Dan and louise will be with you tomorrow morning from six. Join us then. Yes. Goodbye. I dont know. Oh, dear no, no, its. I feel im letting the side down. No, no not. I didnt dislike it. 0k. I felt its two and a quarter hours. I felt it would have benefited from being two, for example. I could have had it three. I could have had four. I couldve had a miniseries. I just loved it. I loved it. But there we go diversity of opinion is a wonderful thing thejoy of film. Yes 0k. I didnt love it, i didnt hate it. No, 0k. But theyre not putting that on the poster. No. Dvd. Dvd, whats out . Yes. Just very briefly, the by the grace of god, which is a true life drama directed by Francois Ozon about a real life case of a group of men who got together to take action against a priest who had molested them in younger life. Whats interesting about it is because the subject matter is so factually based, it is almost as if ozon, who is a kind of, you know, famous auteur, he has put aside any style and has just made the film as straightforwardly and as simply and as, you know, a matter of factly as possible because the story itself is very strong, very powerful, very controversial and its almost like the film makers saying i do not need to embellish this at all. This is how it plays out. And i thought actually, it was a very smart move this is bbc news. The headlines. Because i thought it the matter of fact quality made it all the more powerful. Urgent talks between the queen mmm. All right. Mark, thank you very much. The holes in the tottenham defence went that wide but Roberto Firmino found onejust enough to thread the ball wing defence, keeper and post in a 1 0 win in north london. San moritz is one of the most iconic winter sport venues in the world, but while its a frozen lake may be beautiful, it can be brutal too. In the future having a backing forfunding would be huge for everyone in the sport and hopefully by being here will see the sport and they will want to take pa rt sport and they will want to take part as well. After a 16 year rugby league career, rob burrow retired from playing in 2017. Today hell take to the pitch once again, but his return will be bittersweet. Just before Christmas Rob was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Since then, the Sporting Community has rallied around rob and his family and his former leeds rhinos team mates are holding a charity game. Rob told us what their support means to him. Everybodys been, you know, passing on their best, so, again, coupled with the money thats been raised already, i cant believe it. Im absolutely astonished. Commentator hes still ducking and darting like the best of them, this isa darting like the best of them, this is a sensational try for robbie burrow. What a score im a bit nervous and. I know im not playing a major part but its something i would do again, wearing the shirt, playing with some special friends, but, most importantly for me, walking out with my three kids. Ive never done that. The fact i get to do that again is special. Obviously the crowd, a sell out, unbelievable support right across the board. So a big thank you to them. One of the most enduring and endearing double act that super league has seen. I want to do as well as doddie weir has done, hes done an ageing job. Now rugby league has done it. If we could make more awareness. Hopefully one day find a tube. I like the limelight by the amount of support ive been offered and had is overwhelming. I cant really describe it. The its quite embarrassing to the point where people will do anything for you. Thats really humbling. I suppose after this, life goes on normally, which is how i like it, you know . I feel pretty good at the moment, apart from the voice. After all these events, we are going to have a great time and its just back to normal being a dad. An amazing story and so much credit goes to him for the way hes handling this amazing, challenging
situation. Challenging situation. And rob will bejoining us here on the bbc breakfast sofa tomorrow morning after 8 30am. Here is matt with a look at this mornings weather. And at this mornings weather. You were telling us yest not and you were telling us yesterday, not as cold but certainly as wet as it has been lately. Yes indeed, and today compared with yesterday a today compared with yesterday a little bit drier than it has been. Temperatures dropping a little bit. Through today it will be Getting Better, i think, for many. We will see quite a few showers around in the short term but at least the wind is nowhere near as strong. A bit of a rest but for what is to be headed our way. I will show you that in a minute. At the moment a batch of heavy showers set to work across Northern England, wales and the midlands. Showers still across
scotla nd midlands. Showers still across scotland and Northern Ireland, wintry over the Higher Ground, but just notice as we go into the afternoon, fewer of the showers around. More in the way of sunshine, so some longer dry spells away from the far north west of scotland stopped temperatures for some of you, probably the highest at the moment, dropping a little bit into the afternoon, but not too bad considering the time of year. As we go into the evening and overnight, clear skies for a time. We will see another batch of short lived showers worked their way across many areas during the middle part of the night. Clear skies on either side of it and the chance that temperatures will drop low enough for a touch of frost, even a bit of ice around to ta ke frost, even a bit of ice around to take us into the monday morning commute. But if you have sunshine for your monday morning commute, do
not be fooled. Things will turn quite stormy later. This area of low pressure is storm brendan, named by the irish weather service, and is set to bring some stormy conditions across the west before the days out. Starting with sunshine, clouding over through the morning across Western Areas, winds picking up to gale force and strengthening even further into the afternoon. Heavy rain sweeping across Northern Ireland and into the western fringes of wales, england and scotland by the we finish the day. Temperatures will be on the up thanks to the southerly wind, but the wind strength is of greatest concern, to go with torrential rain. Across western england, a spell of heavy rain could cause some minorflooding and notice the wind gusts, 50, 60 or 70 mph. Once the rain has cleared towards the hebrides, we could see very damaging winds of around 85 mph
pushing here. So expect travel disruption, expect a few problems to finish the day. The strongest of the winds and the heaviest of the rain push towards east anglia and the south east as we head towards the second half of the evening rush hour. That will eventually clear away, so i quite a spell through monday night and into tuesday morning. But what tuesday, our next stormy low pushes its way in. A little further south, the focus for the strongest of the winds, could see 50 or 60 mph gusts across the southern half of england and wales. Heavy rain sweeps its way eastwards. After a bright studied will cloud over, maybe a bit of snow on the hills across parts of scotland, chillier air here, but further south we will see temperatures left to between ten and 1a degrees. But all in all as we go into next week, just be prepared. Keep tuned to the forecast because there is likely to
be some travel disruption, some very heavy and windy weather heading away for the first half of the week. Things were quieten down a little towards the second half of the week and may be drier towards the weekend. More rain and strong winds on the way after a slightly quieter day. Back to you both. We will be back with the headlines at 7 00am. Now its time for click. Booming voice welcome to the biggest tech show on earth. Are you ces ready . Featurink 180,000 people from 160 countries, with a,000 companies, and one pizza making robot. Its ces goodness, he sounded excited, didnt he . So he should yeah, absolutely, it is exciting. We only got ourselves a blooming studio this year overlooking the actual show. Thats ces just out there, hello oh yeah it is quite something and we have for you the latest announcements from here, as well as getting our hands on some of the most exciting looking gadgets that have made their way to las vegas. In fact, spencer, youve been in the water with one of them, havent you . Certainly have, yes. Theres water in las vegas and here it is. This is Lake Las Vegas, an oasis in the desert. This is stacey and this is the hydrofoiler xe1. Its an electric bike that you pedal on the water. Of course it is. As you pedal, the electric motor turns the propeller, which pulls you forward, and the hydrofoils underneath act like aircraft wings and lift the whole caboodle out of the water. It is the same sort of thing you may have seen on racing yachts. Well, it looks manageable, doesnt it . I mean, how hard can it be, really . 0k. One, two, three. And as long as you pedal hard enough at the start, you can get the lift you need, and you are sailing they said, do you want to go for a bike ride in las vegas . And i said yeah, why not . They also said, do you want to go for a trip on Lake Las Vegas . Didnt realise they meant at the same time. Argh and heres the problem. Until you get the hang of it, theres quite a bit of this. Argh and this. And this. Oh, yeah. Oh, no the trick, apparently, is if you feel the bike starting to overbalance, steer into the tilt but lean the other way. Bleep. And when that doesnt work, try not to swear on camera. Now, i was hoping to show you more of my successful rides, but youve already seen all of them. Before the winter water temperatures got the better of me. So please watch stacey being too cool for school while i tell
you that experienced riders can get up to 13 miles an hour, the battery gives you an hour of ride time and the price is nearly 7,500. So if you buy one, find some warmer water and practice, practice, practice. She makes it look so easy. I nearly had it. I swear i nearly had it. Ijust need a couple more goes, but right now, im absolutely frozen. That looked difficult. How was it . It was. It was difficult and cold and wet. And wet. And cold. But heres the thing, right . If you go out there, everyone will tell you that their thing is amazing. And, spoiler alert. Its not so we want to test as much as is humanly possible,
and someone who has tested more than is humanly possible, if you ask me, is lara. Ive tried, and some of the things that i found most exciting this year have been for the smart home. So here are a few of my top picks. There are always plenty of smart home devices at ces, but some of them are a bit more creative than others. It is called wheel. Me, and the idea is that you can summon your furniture using your voice or an app or do so remotely. Naturally, we figured that we could have some fun with this, so weve been trying it all round the house. This is all thanks to some smart coasters that are under here. Wheelme are currently at prototype stage and they are eventually going to be miniaturised to around 25 millimetres but right now, ive got what i need just here in front of me. I going to take that, that, these and it is time to do a spot of cooking. Lets get started. Where is that smart bin . The townow automatically opens and you can pop your rubbish inside. A sensor inside will be able to tell when its full so it can automatically seal the bags, or you can do it manually like this. Now i can take out the sealed bag and once i close this, the new bag will move into place by itself. It will keep doing this until youve used up all 25 bags that are in the cylinder. I felt like this was a little small for a kitchen but the company is working on a larger version too. Ok, illjust leave that to cook for a moment. Oh, no ive spilt some coffee luckily, weve got a robotic mop and vacuum to hand. What a coincidence narwal has already mapped the room, so it is now time to mop the room. You can set it up with a choice of different programmes to use and in the future, it will actually
be to do just spot cleaning. Whilst it does have a seriously hefty price tag, what makes this device difference to similar ones is its ability to self clean. Once its made its way back to its base station, there is one section of clean water and another section that will become dirty water after those mops have been washed. Now, it will need to do that after every 30 square metres of cleaning, so that really is a fair bit. That is quite a lot of goes around this kitchen. That looks ready, but i could do with actually taking this to the show floor. Luckily, ive got this lunchbox which actually heats up. Heatbox uses Steam Technology to heat the food inside. This section here is where the food goes. It is sealed with this bit of rubber to stop either the food leaking out in your bag or any of the water seeping into the food. The makers have considered the fact that this may not be enough food for some people, and that is why
these removable trays are easy to just stack up. You can have a few of them and just keep swapping them in to warm up all the food. Ok, theres lunch. I shall warm that up again when i get there. Time to head back to the show floor. I brought some lunch. This was all pretty easy. All i needed to do was put a spot of water underneath the food and then in ten minutes, it was piping hot. Lovely. Oh sorry, i didnt actually make you any. Charming. There is a pizza making robot here, apparently, it does 300 an hour or as i call it, just about enough. Tell you what lets look at some of the really big announcements from this weeks show. Is that alright . Mmm. Not bad ces loves a new tv but the challenge has often been persuading the rest of us that we actually need them. Samsung went big on 8k qled displays, also embracing ai to upscale lower res content. The edges on this tv are so thin, it is being described
as almost bezel less. In fact, 99 of what youre looking at there is just screen. But if youre struggling to understand why anybody would actually care that the frame is just a little bit smaller, then at least this one has something very different about it. Samsung sero not only works horizontally like a normal tv but also vertically. Take a look at this. It may be only ak but it will mirror your phone and is being considered a future concept based on our changing habits of how we consume media. Still a limited amount of content in this shape though. Still seems better the old way. Meanwhile, lg display was suggesting more uses for its transparent and flexible oled screens. In an aircraft, for example, in a car, and in the living room. Heres the follow up to the roll up tv that we saw two years ago. This one rolls down. What will they think of next . Interestingly, the original roll up one will go on sale later this year for 60,000. The pitch is that if you have a really small living room, you can maximise the space by rolling the screen out of the way. Although if youre paying 60,000 for a screen, i suspect you dont have a small living room. Better known for their consoles than their cars, sony unexpectedly unveiled an electric concept car. The vision s features 33 different advanced sensors, multiple widescreen displays and immersive 360 audio. Dont expect one to be whizzing down any road near you anytime soon, though, as the japanese giant hasnt revealed plans to sell the car
to the public. And thats it for the short version of click from ces for this week. The full length version is waiting for you on iplayer, right now. Please go and see it, we left all the best bits out, ok, so thats where youll find them. Thats what we always do, right . Ah, yes. And we have more amazing stuff from here next week. Thats true. In the meantime, you know where we are, dont you . We are on youtube, facebook, instagram and twitter at bbcclick, so come and see us, and thank you for watching, see you soon. Bye tomorrow morning after 8 30am. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with ben thompson and Rachel Burden. Our headlines today the sandringham summit senior members of the royal family will hold crisis talks tomorrow to discuss harry and meghans new roles. Britain condems iran after its ambassador is arrested in tehran. Liverpool make the best start to an English League season. Victory over tottenham makes it 20 wins in 21 matches in whats becoming a record breaking season. And in weather, plenty of showers at the moment but more in the way of sunshine developing as we go through the day. Lighter winds but Stormy Weather on the way. Ill have all the details right here on breakfast. Its sunday the 12th of january. Our top story the queen has summoned senior members of the royal family to sandringham tomorrow to discuss the future of the duke
and duchess of sussex. Shell discuss a range of options with prince harry. The prince of wales and the duke of cambridge will also attend the meeting. Heres our royal correspondent, nick witchell. Its been described as the sandringham summit. On the queens estate in norfolk tomorrow, the queen will come face to face with prince harry for the First Time Since he and his wife issued their personal statement on wednesday. Also there will be the prince of and Prince William. And harrys wife, prince meghan, the duchess of sussex, is expected to phone in to discuss. Officials have worked hard in recent days to understand what the sussex want and we understand there will be a range of possibilities to review. It is hoped next steps will be agreed at the meeting but officials are stressing any decision about the sussexes future status will take time to be implemented. The trickiest area will be to agree the financial position of the sussexes as they seek financial independence. There are likely to be Tax Implications of any decision to base themselves outside the United Kingdom for any length of time, and Buckingham Palace will want to point protocols to prevent them cashing into blatantly on their royal status. And underpinning it all is the human side, a rift most poignantly between two brothers. According to the sunday times, william has spoken to friends of his sadness at the bond which has now been broken. Nicholas witchell, bbc news. Werejoined now by leigh milner, who is in sandringham for us this morning. Leigh, despite the weeks events, the queen is expected at church this morning as usual, isnt she . Thats right. Yeah, we are expecting her in about an hours time and i hope she has wrapped up warm, because it is a little chilly in sandringham this morning. If you
didnt know, behind me we have st Mary Mcaleeses church, they usually attend therefore their sunday service while attending sandringham, sandringham being their Christmas Holiday home, and it seems despite whats been happening with megan and harry, the queen is going ahead as business as usual. It was only a couple of days ago, as you heard in that report, that meghan and harry said they would step back from senior royals in the royalfamily, a decision not even spoken. Discussed between the queen and Prince Philip, and also a decision thats been. They heard the royal family. What they are doing is work to financially support themselves. How are they going to do that . Theres rumours of a book deal, they have Public Speaking and the obvious choice would be meghans acting career. Theres been quite a huge reaction on social media, as you can imagine. Some are angry and some are
happy with the decision but the big question is what will happen next . Overnight, as we just heard, question is what will happen next . Overnight, as wejust heard, we had an announcement from the palace and the queen will meet with the prince of, the duke of and the duke of sussex. They will meet here tomorrow to discuss their future roles. Weve been told by the palace that theyve got some rather complicated issues to get through. Absolutely. For now, thanks very much. In about five minutes we will look at what potentially that meeting could deliver tomorrow. Theres no suggestion the answers will all be hammered out at the meeting tomorrow but nonetheless we will speak to the royal journalist victoria but nonetheless we will speak to the royaljournalist victoria murphy in about five minutes on breakfast. The foreign secretary, dominic raab, has said iran was in breach of International Law, after the arrest of the uks ambassador in tehran. Rob macaire was detained after attending a vigil for those killed in the ukranian passenger plane that was shot down on wednesday. Our middle east correspondent Quentin Somerville is in baghdad. How much diplomatic tension has this caused . Im having some trouble with the line at the moment, you have dropped out, but let me answer by saying that rob macaire re was attending this vigil which turned into a protest against erans own downing of the ukrainian flight. Its an indication of how relaxed he was at attending the protest because afterwards he went for a haircut and at that point he was detained by authorities and held for about an hour. He was released unharmed. This isa hour. He was released unharmed. This is a major breach of diplomatic protocol and as you mentioned in your introduction, foreign secretary dominic raab said this was a flag ra nt dominic raab said this was a flagrant violation of International Law. What we are seeing right now in iran and also to an extent here in iraq is the Big Questions being asked by people, is it business as usual by the Iranian Regime and by iranian proxies after the killing of
Qasem Soleimani, its leading operator and leading general . That business of usual, that business as usual is violence, oppression and murder but the forces of change that have been oppressed in both countries, do they have a chance to flourish . That is the view of President Trump and his administration. They hope by removing Qasem Soleimani and abu mahdi al muhandis, the iranian aligned militia leader here in baghdad, that there would be some kind of opening up. The reality, though, is iranian influence is at every level here in iraq. Every government, even through the military. Any kind of sudden spring here is a distant prospect. Thank you very much indeed, Quentin Somerville, in baghdad this morning. President trump has expressed his
support for protestors in iran, with tweets being sent from the president s account in both english and farsi. In one of his tweets aimed at demonstrators, he said his adminstration stood with the brave and long suffering people of iran. The president also urged the iranian government to allow human Rights Groups to monitor the protests. Police in australia have increased a reward for information about the abduction and suspected murder of a british toddler who vanished 50 years ago. The body of cheryl grimmer, who was three when she went missing in 1970, has never been found. One million australian dollars, which is more than £500,000, is now on offer. A fifth firefighter has been killed tackling blazes that are ravaging parts of australia. Four other emergency workers have died in the past two months. The Authorities Say a week of cooler weather is forecast and will help them to contain the fires, but the crisis is far from over. More hot and dry conditions are expected later this month. A 100 year old giant tortoise,
whos credited with single handedly saving his species from extinction, is to be released back into the wild on the galapagos islands. The male, called diego, has been part of a captive Breeding Programme since the mid 1960s and its believed hes fathered around 800 offspring. The programme has now finished, and diego will be returned to his Native Island in march for a well earned rest. Doesnt specify how many separate mothers had been introduced to in that time, but 800 children hes been busy fairly intense, isnt it . As weve been hearing this morning, prince harry will meet the queen tomorrow to discuss what his new role outside of the royal senior circle will look like. Its hoped the talks at sandringham, which will also be attended by Prince Charles
and william, will work out the next steps. We can speak now to royal commentator, victoria murphy, who is in our london newsroom. Good morning. Tomorrow is the day when they all get together, they will sit in a room and try to thrash this out. What will be the main issues they need to content with . Extraordinary week for the royal family and next week will also be, with the meeting held at sandringham but whats important about the meeting is it tells us they are working together because of course it was clear last week that the sussexes and the rest of the royals we re sussexes and the rest of the royals were operating very separately. We are told they will look at a range of options taking into account the thinking the sussexes outlined on their website last week and that tells us two things. They do really wa nt to tells us two things. They do really want to find an arrangement that makes this couple happy. It is so obvious they have been very unhappy andi obvious they have been very unhappy and i think theres a real desire to accommodate what they want but it also serves to arrive, remind us
that what they put into the Public Domain last week was their hope about what they can achieve with their new roles, but nothing has been agreed or signed off. Theres so much to consider. Finances will bea so much to consider. Finances will be a big one and how this will work logistically, and the idea of splitting their time between north america and britain. So many issues to iron out. Lets talk about the website, where they laid out their aspirations and wishes about how they would the their role working. Whats fascinating about that is they have played their cards and now those negotiations need to happen. If they dont get those things on their wish list, it really draws the lines and it suggests theres been a real disagreement . There absolutely has been a real disagreement, this is being played out very much in the Public Domain because they put what they wanted to happen on a website and the royal family had to they wanted to happen on a website and the royalfamily had to admit that wasnt signed off and nobody was ready to agree their future
roles. The difficulty is theres a real understanding for them wanting to do Something Different but it has to do Something Different but it has to bea to do Something Different but it has to be a package, its unprecedented and it has to be palatable and sustainable to the british people and they say they want to be financially independent and theyre using that as a reason to act autonomously and earn their own income. But there are two questions, can they become financially independent from public funding if they continue to do things such as carrying out tours on behalf of the foreign commonwealth office, largely funded by the public . And if they can find a solution to not taking any public funding, how do they come up with a package that is palatable to the British Public that stops constant accusations of their caching in on their royal status. If they are not doing duties in some form, they have to look at how to avoid those accusations and that is the biggest challenge here. We cant look at this in isolation, this isnt just about harry and look at this in isolation, this isntjust about harry and meghan, this is about the future role of any
other royal in the royal family and what role they will be playing in a perhaps more streamlined royal family . Its been suggested this could potentially be used as a blueprint for maybe while such as Princess Charlotte and prince louis might operate in the future. Theres a lot of talk about slim down monarchy but i believe had harry and meghan wanted full time royal roles, they would have been a place for them in the slimmed down monarchy. Harry is one of charless only two sons, there would have been a role for him and thats always been apparent historically when weve seen the core group, hes always been part of that. But if they dont wa nt been part of that. But if they dont want it, theres a desire to accommodate them otherwise, but it has to be sustainable long term and it has to be something that crucially the public are happy with. The problem with whats happened in the last week is the problems are now so apparent because they have outlined a wish list and there are so many things to un pick and so many holes with it. They havent
been able to iron those out and present us with a solution before we are so highly aware of all the complications. Victoria, a quick word on timings. When might we hear the outcome of these meetings . think we will hear pretty soon, there a real desire to be resolving this at pace, according to the queen. Tomorrow will be the family looking overdraft proposals that have been drawn up for them, but we might get more announcements next week on how things may progress. In terms of ironing out the logistics and detail, theres a real appreciation that will take time. Victoria, good to talk to you and thanks very much. Watch this space. The queen expected at sandringham this morning as normal and those talks getting under way at sandringham tomorrow. Here is matt with a look at this mornings weather. I saw my first snowdrops in the garden but i suspect they have been elsewhere . think so, i saw my christmas buds coming up as well and a bit of blossom, temps in and they should be
for the time of year and they will be through the coming week set to be stormy with disruptive conditions, especially early. Not as windy as yesterday today and not as wet. We have showers to begin with and one batch of lengthier bursts pushing across northern and lone, north wales, the midlands and east anglia. Fewer showers in the south, overnight winds easing down, sunshine coming out and not as windy in the north but lively showers in scotla nd in the north but lively showers in scotland and Northern Ireland this morning, wintry with snow over high ground. By the afternoon, dry in more places with fewer shower clouds around and it should be a bit cooler than when yesterday. It temperatures in single figures for a fair few. Tonight, some showers pushing from west to east but longer clear skies in between those and that will allow temperatures to drop low enough for a touch of frost and a bit of ice at times for the rush hour tomorrow. May be a cool start but a bright start and dont be full if you have morning sunshine. This is on the
way, storm render, named by the irish weather service, it will push in with potential disruption for the afternoon and evening storm brenda. Showers initially and longer spells of heavy and may be torrential rain pushing in by the end of the evening. Temperatures might be on the up but little consequence when you have winds that could touch 60, 70, maybe 80 mph in Western Areas as the rain pushes through. It will be working through many areas as we go through the evening rush hour, so stay tuned to the forecast and we will have more through the programme and indeed tomorrow morning. Back to you both. I will be digging out my super strong umbrella. Thank you
we have harry and meghan and iraq and all of that. I have emily thornberry, who is trying to be the next leader of the labour party, and i have the actorjames mcevoy . Reviewing the papers. Harry and meghan. Not really quite a new role lets talk to a man who you would often see on that photo, professor often see on that photo, professor of strathclyde university. Thank you for coming in. Harry and professor of politics Sirjohn Curtice is here to tell us what has caught his eye. You talk a lot about poles, and royals in someway political. The mail on sunday has been looking at Public Opinion around harry and meghan. There is no doubt the story dominating the papers today is the question of the royals, it is sufficiently important that the death of opinion polls always occasioned by the christmas and new
year holiday has been broken by the royal story. And of course, it is interesting because we have had lots of suppose it experts on the royal family pining in the last two or three days about whether what harry and opining want to do is right or wrong and popular or unpopular opining. The good news for harry and meghan is that around 50 of people think that they are making the right decision. Just over a third think they are wrong. But the interesting thing that the mail on sunday focus on is the fact that attitudes differ by age. So older folk like on is the fact that attitudes differ by age. So olderfolk like me on is the fact that attitudes differ by age. So older folk like me are much more critical of their decision. A majority in that group think that they have made a wrong decision on the other hand, among those aged 19 37, around two thirds think they have made the right decision. All of that said, the other good bit of news for the queen, and she probably might want some good news given what happened
in the last two or three days, is that still only 20 of us want to abolish the monarchy and even among young people that figure is no more than 29 . Interesting however that this is a story where not everybody is of the same view. We are quite strongly divided on it and there is this very strong age divide which we have seen in lots of other things. Where there does seem to be some kind of consensus is the strong support for the idea they should have told the queen first. And if there is a misstep from wherever you stand on this story, that seems to be the big one. 71 of people say they should have told the queen, most young people think they should have told the queen and when the
polls go on to ask questions about whether or not they should repay the cost of their wedding or repay the cost of their wedding or repay the cost of the cottage that they have got from the queen, there is quite a lot of support for that kind of statement as well. Lets turn to brexit and this is about big ben ringing in brexit day. What i hadnt clocked about this, excuse the pun, is that it will cost £120,000 to do so. Is that it will cost £120,000 to do so. Interesting, you might have thought we would have stopped arguing about the cost of brexit. You will remember one of the eternal arguments between those on the remaining side and the leave site is whether or not we will be worse off. Even when it comes to this question about whether or not big ben should be allowed to strike at 11pm on 31 january, which is the time when we leave the european union, big ben of course is currently not normally striking because the whole thing is under renovation. Well, apparently pa rt under renovation. Well, apparently part of the argument is that it would cost £120,000 to do it. And by the way, another £100,000 for every
week that you delay the project. And week that you delay the project. And we we re week that you delay the project. And we were talking about brexit and delay, it would mean we would have to delay getting big and back in full working orderfor to delay getting big and back in full working order for another week or two. This thing about cost and delay about brexit is still with us. The other interesting thing in that story, of course, most of us, whether big ben strikes or not, are not going to go to Parliament Square late at night injanuary to do it. But apparently the Prime Ministers aides are saying they are against the idea of extending pub Opening Hours to allow all of us to go down to the local to celebrate. And we should remember the timing, as well, 11 p. M. That is midnight in brussels. People will assume it is midnight, but no. We have to follow european rules, even when we have the date when we should leave. And mothercare shutting its last shop today. The end of an era. For those of my generation, almost unbelievable. I can well remember bringing upa unbelievable. I can well remember bringing up a child over 30 years ago, and at that stage, we would spend virtually every weekend tripping to mothercare in birkenhead
point, more or less obligatory for some item of equipment required to bring up children as was required. It was close to Something Else which was very it was close to Something Else which was very popular, which was the Early Learning centre. It is an indication of how indeed our high street really is being challenged by the internet. Because you know, the group amongst us who are most savvy about using the internet and using our phones in order to be able to shop online are younger folk, and younger folk have children, so undoubtedly this is a section of the high street that is particularly vulnerable. But certainly for those of us have a certain age, it is kind of us have a certain age, it is kind of unbelievable that mothercare is no longer with us. And there are ten yea rs pretty no longer with us. And there are ten years pretty much between my oldest and my youngest, and mothercare was and my youngest, and mothercare was a regular weekly fixture for my eldest. By the time my youngest came along, all online. Which is sad in a way, because it was also an opportunity to go and meet other
people and get face to face advice, which was invaluable. Which of course for many Young Mothers is very crucial. Really nice to see you. You will return a little later. Thank you so much. If you were watching breakfast last week, you may have seen the story of a brave group of students who rescued a mother and baby from a canal. The teenagers used the cpr techniques they had learnt at school to save the pair. From september, first aid lessons will be a compulsory part of the national curriculum. Brea kfasts tim muffett caught up with the boys at their school in widnes. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cpr. It is taught at this school in widnes, in cheshire, and earlier this week, some of its students told brea kfast this week, some of its students told breakfast how they had used the skills they had learned to save this woman and her baby daughter. Just a normal day with our mates, trying to play football, and then all of a sudden this girl ran over, upset and distressed in a way. So it was like, we went over and seen just two people in the water, struggling to cope for any longer. I thought i can
swim, soi cope for any longer. I thought i can swim, so i can help out, and then the cold is so heavy. So im just trying and i just the cold is so heavy. So im just trying and ijust cant. When i got the baby out, i noticed that it had trouble breathing, so i have had to do cpr on the babys chest. trouble breathing, so i have had to do cpr on the babys chest. I was really, really grateful they were there, and they did everything they can. Because when they pulled me out of the water, i think they asked me are you all right, i said call 999 because i worried about the baby, but they already called. So they knew everything. The boys school brought in emergency first aid lessons following an earlier tragedy involving one of its students. 1a year old tear drowned after falling into a pond in 2018 tia. That prompted students to push for cpr and water Safety Training to be made available, lessons that have
now proved so valuable. Now i know what i could do if i was in that situation, especially because we learn cpr in school. Two it is good to learn those skills, because you could be saving someones life. To learn those skills, because you could be saving someones lifem inspires us and proves we need to learn cpr in school. They didnt jump learn cpr in school. They didnt jump into the water, which was a really important decision that they made. They were able to pull my mount, and the baby, but able to see that the baby was in distress, and as such, call upon that first aid training. For us at school, it is of course it is crucial to get great exam results. But alongside that, the life skills, for example, cpr, first aid, ijust as important. We have just done a water safety campaign. We do cpr every single year for every single child, with a
refresher, and it isjust great that that learning has been put into action with a positive outcome. It isjust fantastic. Action with a positive outcome. It is just fantastic. A textbook response to the situation, from the police and Emergency Services, widespread praise. From one family, heartfelt thanks. What we saw there is absolutely fascinating. And we work with our partners for the last few years to make sure that from this year first aid will be a compulsory part of the programme in schools in england. was surprised it wasnt already. As we had in the piece, it is the basic life skills. Absolutely, at the moment one in ten people survive a cardiac arrest when it happens out of hospital, in countries where we see people being trained in first aid at school and through life, that figure goes up and up. So it is a really important thing. So much of it is having the confidence to do it, and that obviously comes from practice and being trained. So you are going to demonstrate first of all in the baby, and you . Yes, so
the first thing to do is check that the first thing to do is check that the baby isnt breathing. We are going to listen and look and check the baby isnt breathing and then get the baby onto a hard flat surface if we can. And slightly extend the neck back. And what were going to do is we are going to put five breaths into the baby. To do that we are going to cover the nose and the mouth with our mouth and then were going to use little angel breaths. That is different to an adult, isnt it . Yes, so we will start with chest compression with an adult, unless they have actually beenin adult, unless they have actually been in the water, and then we start with the rescue bets as well. For a babyit with the rescue bets as well. For a baby it is. And tiny, tiny little breaths. Really small breaths. And sometimes that will prompt the baby to start breathing again. If it doesnt, two little fingers in the middle of the babys chest and were literally just going middle of the babys chest and were literallyjust going to push down a little way and were going to co m press little way and were going to compress the chest. And that is all it takes, relatively small
movements. So it is small movements. How long do you do that for . So we keep going backwards and forwards between the breaths and compressions probably until health right help arrives. What is really important and what the lads did really well last week is they got the ambulance on the way really, really quickly. So first aid is all about buying that time the Emergency Services to get you and arrive. And as rachel said, it is very different for an adult. And you might be able to demonstrate the difference with an adult, and some considerations we should should be aware of. Sure, so i have another mannequin on the floor. So it is slightly different. We have checked for danger already, were checking for response, hello, can you hear me, can you open your eyes . And at that point, shout for some help. Help should come. We need to check the airway so we are looking for obstruction in the mouth. You can give that heat a little bit of a flick and then we do something called the head tilt chin left, hand on the forehead, and backwards, and were checking for
breathing. We are feeling for ten secondsjust to see breathing. We are feeling for ten seconds just to see if they breathing. They are not breathing, we have an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing and we need to start cpr. At this point, ask for your help to call 999. So interlocked the palm of the centre of the chest, keeping the palm straight, and then at a rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute, you need to do 30 compressions. It is about a third of the chest. A lot more than many people would expect, and a lot harder. So you are going to break the ribs, you do need to apply a bit of force, you did what you need to do and continue until you get to 30 and you do two rescue breaths. Pinching the nose, making a nice, tight seal. And then continue with the compressions. And how long would that continue for . Generally you are going to do that until the ambulance arrives, so that could be anything from seven to ten minutes, and backwards and forwards. Again, we would hope it is simply enough that you could grab somebody to help you. Equally, if for any reason you dont
feel you could do that rescue breaths or there is something obstructing the mouse, the chest compressions are really important. That is brilliantly described, and people can find out more from St John Ambulance if they want to. But brilliant that our young people will now be learning this as a matter of course. Thank you so much. Stay with us on the bbc news channel, where we will have the headlines and sport. But its goodbye to viewers on bbc one, as match of the day is coming up next. Hello, this is breakfast with ben thompson and Rachel Burden. Good morning. Foreign secretary dominic raab has said iran was in breach of International Law after the arrest of the uks ambassador in tehran. Rob macaire was detained after attending a vigil for those killed in the ukranian passenger plane that was shot down on wednesday. He was released after three hours. Simonjones reports. Protests in tehran against the government. For three days iran had denied it shot down the ukrainian passenger plane. Then, in an extraordinary turnaround, the military finally admitted it had made a disastrous mistake. Britains ambassador to tehran had joined what started as a vigil to the dead in the iranian capital. He left when it turned into a demonstration. But rob mcaire was arrested as he stopped at a barbershop for a haircut. He was accused of helping to organise the protests. Under the vienna convention, diplomats cannot be detained. Here at the Foreign Office in london, the foreign secretary dominic raab has described the ambassadors arrest as a flagrant violation
of International Law. He said the iranian government was at a crossroads moment. It could continue the march towards pariah status with all the political and economic isolation that involves or it could take steps to de escalate tensions and engage in diplomacy. Britain is also demanding the investigation in the crash should be comprehensive, transparent and independent. A senior military commander in iran said the plane had been wrongly identified as an american missile. Tensions were high in the region following the uss assassination of a Senior Iranian general. 57 of the 176 people who lost their lives from canada. Simon jones, bbc news. President trump has expressed his support for protestors in iran, with tweets being sent from the president s account in both english and farsi. In one of his tweets aimed at demonstrators, he said his adminstration stood with the brave and long suffering people of iran. Singer lewis capaldi, stormzy and harry styles are in the running for multiple awards and Bruce Springsteen has been nominted for best male international artist, 3a years after his last win. The last female artist to win best album was adele in 2016. All about liverpool this morning with the sport . I think they are out of sight now, we thought that before but we are sure after yesterday. We we re but we are sure after yesterday. We were cautious around christmas. Shows how well they are playing, they broke a record, 21 wins out of 21 games, the best start to a season out of any of europes five top leagues and the writing is on the wall. Fair they were the best scene Dominic Thiem this season, and as well as season, but they were just
pipped by Manchester City. Its shaping up to be a record breaking season. Liverpool with a a 16 point lead at the top. Not thatjurgen klopp is wanting to talk about records yet. Ben croucher wraps up the key moments from yesterdays action. Liverpool are a tightknit bunch, squeezing the life out of anything that gets in their way. If theyre growing closer, the distance to everyone else has stretched gap to crevice to chasm. The holes in tottenhams defence went that wide but Roberto Firmino found one just enough to thread the ball between defender, keeper and post in a 1 0 win in north london. So should we just hand jurgen klopp the trophy now . What i know about football is if someone gives you the trophy, it is done, but until then you have to fight as much as you can and thats what we do and the start, as we always said, is the basis. The start is obviously nearly perfect so far, but its only the start and we have to continue and we will continue because our contenders are so strong. But blow by blow,
they are getting weaker. Take second place leicester, they put nine past southampton the last time they met and now it was southamptons number nine turning the tables. Commentator danny ings doesnt miss these days and as soon as he was sent through, you fancied him to score. Lester might have to look over their shoulder with liverpool out of sight. They will find chelsea lurking, clear as a bright yellow football. Nurnleys nick pope had trouble spotting it, though. He saw chelseas third in their 3 0 win but couldnt do anything about it. Commentator callum hudsonodoi has his first ever premier league goal. Marcus rashfords a seasoned scorer these days, as seasoned as a 22 year old can be, he celebrated his 200th Manchester United game with two goals as they thrashed norwich a 0. Still miles behind liverpool, but at least the gap hasnt got any bigger. For now. Ben croucher, bbc news. Frank lampard wasnt even born when roy hodgson started his managerial career, nor was mikel arteta, hodgsons Crystal PalaceHolding Arsenal to a 1 1 draw in the early kick off. Manchester city are level on points with arsenal at the top of the Womens Super League after Pauline Bremer scored twice as they beat everton 3 1. Bremer now with nine goals this season. Arsenal can go clear again if they come away unbeaten from brighton later. Serena williams has won her first title for three years, she beatJessica Pegula in straight sets in the final of the Auckland International a good sign as she builds up for another shot at a record equalling 2ath grand slam title. The Australian Open starts a week tomorrow. She donated her winners cheque of a3,000 to the relief effort of the australian bush fires. Now, how about this for a dramatic ending in rugbys european champions cup . Thats exeters stuart hogg, who, with the scores level at 31 31, had this kick from 60m out to win it in the final seconds against his former club glasgow only to see it hit the crossbar. Not that it mattered, exeter into the quarter finals and being tipped by many to win the trophy this year. Saracens have said theyll prioritise premiership survival over european glory after their record points deduction and fine. Despite playing most of the game with 1a men, theyre in with a fighting chance of reaching the last eight after beating ospreys 22 15. Alex lewington with their only try. Gloucester are still in with a chance of qualifying after thumping montpellier 29 6, scoring four tries for what could be a vital bonus point. And ulster made to wait to secure their place after losing 29 13 to claremont. Ulster can still make the last eight with a win against bath next weekend. There was no fifth bdo world darts title for englands lisa ashton after Mikuru Suzuki retained her crown. Suzuki was ruthless in the final, reeling off three legs in a row to take the first set and going on to win 3 0. Bryony frost and horse frodon have won their first race together since making history at last years cheltenham festival. The 5 a favourite, trained by paul nicholls, won the Silviniaco Conti chase at kempton. Last march, frost became the first female jockey to win a grade one race. Great to Serena Williams getting the title she has been desperately craving. Obviously wants to get the grandslam title to equal the record. And with djokovic and nadal playing in the final of the atp cup, signs of things to come in the Australian Open, the big names. Often we talk about the young pretenders. Amazing how they have dominated for so long. We keep wondering whether that would
change. And she donated her fee . The relief effort for the bush fires. Loads of them have, in the warm ups, they have donated for every ace served and that kind of thing. Nice to sportsmen and women doing what they can to help. Thank you, john. Nice to you. Nice to see you. Climate change is forcing many organisations to think about the impact they have on Global Warming and many are coming up with big solutions. The National Trust has plans to plant 20 Million Trees over the next decade, as part of efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2030. Were joined now by mark harold from the National Trust. 20 Million Trees is an awful lot of trees. Practically speaking, how do you do it . Yes, it is a lot of trees. Its what weve announced this week, especially today on the anniversary we have for 125 years, and what we are looking to do is try and what we are looking to do is try and meet the targets set by the
independent panel on Climate Change of increasing the woodland cover for us in england, wales and Northern Ireland from 10 of our ownership to 1796, ireland from 10 of our ownership to 17 , and weve calculated that would involve around 18,000 hectares, which is about 20 Million Trees. So a big task and we will enlist the help of our many staff, our supporters and volunteers as well as Community Groups and contractors to all pull together to plant those trees. Something like 38,000 trees a week is one calculation i had . Thats right, thats what it comes down to. A huge number but some of that will be through planting. Professional tree planters plant these whips, as they are called, small seedling trees and they can plant up to 1000 a day. If they have the right conditions and the ground is prepared for them, it can be quite a quick process, the actual planting. Also much of the treeplanting we will achieve, or the woodland cover, will achieve, or the woodland cover, will be through natural
regeneration. Thats where we keep out the natural animals, the deer in particular that would be grazing in those areas, and what happens is the trees who have got there through seed my mostly wind born, can actually grow up without you having to plant at all so you need to exclude the grazing and those areas will grow up into good woodland cover. How do you manage the threat from the deer . You can fence them out, you can put in individual guards around trees. Theres a number of techniques. Our rangers have adapted to make sure our trees have adapted to make sure our trees have adapted to make sure our trees have a good chance to thrive. At the end of the day, if you have enough woodland planted, when it has got to ten or 12 years, it gets away from a deer and the growing can continue. That makes sense. Some of this land will be currently farmed by some of your tenants, how are you managing that . Will people effectively be forced to give up their land to woodland . This is a really important
thing for us. We recognise the crisis we have both in terms of the wildlife that we see around us and in terms of the Climate Change which is happening. Our treeplanting is very much about us working with others to get to the net zero position and part of that is about how we use our land and how we purpose it. Much of our land is already woodland. Some of it is nature conversation, habitat, and some is farmed and what we will see over the ten year period is more farmland going to habitats and woodland. We have a natural turnover with our tenancies where tenants are giving up all the time, they might be retiring or frankly giving up all the time, they might be retiring orfrankly in giving up all the time, they might be retiring or frankly in the tough times farmers are facing through the brexit racist and seeing the world trade situation come in brexit process. Will farmers be forced to give up theirland process. Will farmers be forced to give up their land and forced to end their tenancies to achieve their targets . Their tenancies to achieve their targets . We arent forcing any tenancies to end. What we tend to
get is each tenancy has a period when it ends and you start you negotiate a new one and at that time we will think about the best use of that land for the Public Benefit we are trying to deliver on behalf of the whole nation. There are farmers who will argue strongly, livestock farmers, who will say well managed land with cattle on it can be as useful a mechanism for absorbing carbon as woodland. Yes. Soil carbons are really important and i would agree with that and good, well managed grassland, if you can increase the organic matter content in the soil, you can really get some good benefit. Ive just been at the oxford farming Conference Last Week and really the tenor and the flavour amongst farmers is very much understanding that the Climate Change is here, and its a crisis we all have to deal with. So many farmers themselves will be increasing the woodland cover on their own farms, allowing the hedgerows to have more what we call
standard trees, so big timber in it. Its not just about turning whole farms over two woodland, its about on every farm farmers looking at those corners that arent very productive and allowing them to turn to woodland or turning them into woodland. Significant. Many people are applauding what they are doing. Good luck with it. 20 Million Trees over the next decade is the plan. Mightyjob on their hands here is matt with a look at this mornings weather. And you were showing us this map earlier. This is astonishing. Look at that divide. It is amazing, yes. There is a reason i am showing it, but temperatures at this time of year and eastern parts of the us are usually lower single figures. 27 degrees hit in West Virginia on saturday afternoon. Contrast that to parts of missouri, 8. Those big temperature contrasts have fired up storms, tornadoes, torrential rain and damaging winds as well. And that
is all firing and damaging winds as well. And that is allfiring up and damaging winds as well. And that is all firing up a particularly lively jetstream in is all firing up a particularly livelyjetstream in skies above the us. It will propagate in the north atla ntic us. It will propagate in the north atlantic through the next few days. That then picks up a succession of low pressure systems and develop them, which could bring us some pretty Stormy Weather at times into next week. It is a week to never drift too far away from the forecast, especially the first half of the week. Potential travel disruption, Power Outages as well, and some heavy rain at times as well. That is all the head. More on that in a second. Enjoy the quiet conditions today. Plenty of showers at the moment but they are easing, becoming less windy compared with yesterday. Here is where the showers are at present, the overnight rain clearing away from the eastern corner, that is rain through the midlands this morning and some pretty lively showers through scotla nd pretty lively showers through scotland and Northern Ireland. All become fewer in number as we had lunch time and go into the afternoon. Longer sunny spells around, a few showers dotted here and there, chiefly in the north west of scotland, and throughout the day
they will be dropping some snow on they will be dropping some snow on the hills. Could affect some of the higher roads across central and northern scotland. It could be cooler than yesterday, but as i said, dry and brighter. Some showers for a time overnight but with clear skies either side of them, the chance of frost here and there to ta ke chance of frost here and there to take us into the monday morning commute and a little bit icy sea in a few areas as well. If you are waking up to sunshine on monday morning, do not drop your guard, because this area of low pressure is storm brendan, named by the irish weather service. That will be pushing its way in. Taking away the morning sunshine, replacing it with cloud and strengthening winds, a few showers and torrential rain sweeping across ireland, western scotland, western wales and the western fringes of england, by which time the winds will be picking up. They will be southerly winds, so that will be southerly winds, so that will lift the temperature. But it is worth focusing on what will happen tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. If we looking across parts of the uk as we had the evening rush
hour tomorrow, we could be talking winds of 50, 60, maybe 70 mph across western parts of england and wales in particular. Coupled with torrential rain, that will put lots of water on the roads. Ferry disruption, bridge restrictions expect it and damaging winds as well, potentially could see when stopping 85 mph towards the hebrides towards the evening. A lively into the day, the strong winds sweeping towards east anglia and the south east as we hit monday evening. And then, while things quietened down for a time through monday and tuesday, our next low pressure moves its way in. England and wales will see the strongest of the winds, again some travel problems, more rain sweeping its way northwards, turning to snow over the Higher Ground of scotland and a big temperature contrast on tuesday. But certainly next week, stay tuned to the forecast. Looking pretty lively. Back to you both. I love how you can explain how what happens on one side of the world therefore filters through. It is all interlinked in
one way or another, that fluid atmosphere of ours. What happened over there yesterday will have a big impact on us today. Time now for a look at this weeks travel show. Since hg wells wrote of the martian invasion in his 1897 novel war of the worlds, the red planet has captured our imaginations. At over 33 million miles away, its incredible to think we could one day colonise mars. This year, Virgin Galactics first customers hope to head into space in a 90 minute sub orbital flight, for a cool 250,000. But if you dont have that in the bank, but still harbour dreams of being a space explorer, there are options out there here on earth. So, for the next 2a hours, ill be learning how to live life like a mars colonist in spain. Astroland is a project set up to see how humans would potentially cope living on mars from a psychological perspective, but to also test out potential technologies. So clearly, this is not a Space Shuttle but mars, for the purpose of this exercise, is going to be in a remote cave in arredondo, and i have a feeling my sci fi fantasies are about to become unlocked. The idea is to simulate how hard it will be to survive on another planet with the barest of tools. This particular expedition is just for the night, and is geared towards scientists who will be doing experiments as if theyre on the red planet. Wow. Oh, my god. Down we go. But, before any exploration, the team need to change. So this is the bit ive actually been waiting for, my very own spacesuit, although its a lot thinner than i thought. I thought it was going to be this giant spacesuit that i was going to find a little bit unwieldy, but i think i can handle that. In fact, i think ive got an outfit like this at home. I look ready, ifeel ready, im ready. Just one final touch. Im ready for my ascent into martian land. Im a little bit scared, too. Laughs. Hold this . Laughs. Our aim is to get to ares, our base, where we will be spending the night. Its anticipated that the first colonists to mars will also have to live underground in caves or lava tubes, to avoid interstellar radiation. And theres no time to waste on the experiments. Ok, so im collecting some samples of the water thats trickling from above. Its really quite cool. Speaks spanish so the guys havejust made quite an interesting discovery. Theyve discovered a rock showing signs of photosynthesis, which is strange because theres no light down here, so this is a pretty incredible breakthrough for these guys. Finally, we make it to ares, and its a bit of a squeeze in the decompression chamber. But the team are immediately analysing their samples. Were going to find out if the water we collected earlier has got any signs of bacteria, basically any signs of life living inside it. In a previous expedition, they actually discovered a new species of amoeba. The important thing here is you have a cave which is huge, and very special, and you have the capacity to analyse some of the things inside the cave. And what are you hoping to achieve by collecting samples from down here . New species, basically. But i think here you can learn many things about aspiration in difficult
parts of the earth and other parts of the solar system, for example. Ah, we have a table. The pod is set up with everything to meet your basic needs, and after all that work, its time for dinner. Cous cous with chicken. Wild berry yoghurt. They all sound the same. Im going for one of my favourite dishes, bolognese. Right, the waters in. Give it a stir, leave for ten minutes. It looks a little bit like plastic. But im so hungry. That is actually quite nice. Whilst the others finish up dinner, i sneak out to find out more about the project. Also, any excuse to get suited up. Ifeel like im in a completely different world being in here. I mean, how big is this cave . I mean, its pretty deep. Sitting here, right by the dome, by the space station, by the ares station, we are hardly hardly one third of its actual size. It is so big that it actually resembles the giant lava tubes that we could find that we are going to find on mars. Human beings will inhabit mars, its a fact. The only thing we dont know right now is when its going to happen. It could happen in 20, 30, a0, 50 years. Yeah. Right now, we can resemble all the conditions that were going to find on planet mars, and beneath planet mars, right here on planet earth. One of the goals is to extend the stays in the cave to see how people cope. Very soon, well meet teams of scientists, and engineers, and people from all areas
of knowledge and science, spending one month, several months, more than a year, in this station. More than a year . wow. When youre talking about isolating people for several months or more than one year, there are so many things that come in that will be so useful for future space exploration. This experience isnt cheap. For non scientists, its about £5,000 for the 30 day experience, which includes preparation, training, and about three days in the cave. Imean, mars. Next up, cat moh is in iceland at the Thingvellir National park, taking an icy dip between two tectonic plates. Bubbling, spluttering and creeping. Iceland is a country alive. Sat on a fault line between two tectonic plates, and enduring brutal weather conditions, its constantly being shaped by powerful natural forces. Which is why i have come to Thingvellir National park, because here, back in the 18th century, earthquakes tore a rift in the valley and left behind what some say are the clearest waters in the world. So im joining a tour group to snorkel in what is called the silfa fissure. Our group is so international, even our guide is an italian. Basically, we have two reasons to be here. First of all, silfra is the only place on earth you can actually dive between two tectonic plates. As i show you guys over there, there is the edge of the american tectonic plate. Five kilometres on the other side of the valley there is the beginning of the eurasian tectonic plate. The silfra fissure sits
between these two plates, which move apart at 2. 5 centimetres a year. When it formed, glacial meltwater filled the gap. Water thats just two degrees above freezing. Its quite difficult, walking down the stairs. I can feel the water squeezing in my suit. Yeah, so just come towards me, just lean forward. And let the fins go up in the back. Yes, perfect, like that. And you just fly. Do you feel all right . Now we can start to go, then. Oh, my god. This water is cold my face is so numb its only been, like, ten seconds. All right, guys. Everyone, its ok, guys. Thumbs up there we go. Amazingly, it takes up to 100 years for the water to filter from the nearby glacier and on through volcanic rock to arrive here. Here, the underwater visibility can be as much as 100 metres. So far, so good. My body is completely numb to the cold water. So now all that is left to do is just enjoy the view. Its so clear down here. Its amazing. Well, thats all weve got time for this week. From me and the rest of the travel show team here in northern spain, it is goodbye. Good morning and welcome to breakfast with ben thompson and Rachel Burden. Our headlines today. The sandringham summit senior members of the royal family will hold crisis talks tomorrow to discuss harry and meghans new roles. Britain condems iran after its ambassador is arrested in tehran. Liverpool make the best start to an English League season. Victory over tottenham makes it 20 wins in 21 matches in whats becoming a record breaking season. And in weather, plenty of showers around at the moment, but more in the way of sunshine developing as we go through today. Lighter winds, but theres some Stormy Weather on the way. I will have all of the details,
right here on breakfast. Its sunday, 12th january. Our top story. The queen has summoned senior members of the royal family to sandringham tomorrow to discuss the future of the duke and duchess of sussex. Shell discuss a range of options with prince harry. The prince of wales and the duke of cambridge will also attend the meeting. Heres our royal correspondent, nick witchell. Its been described as the sandringham summit. On the queens estate in norfolk tomorrow, the queen will come face to face with prince harry for the First Time Since he and his wife issued their personal statement about their future last wednesday. Also there will be the prince of wales and Prince William, and harrys wife, meghan, the duchess of sussex, is expected to phone in to join the discussion from canada. Officials have worked hard in recent days to understand what the sussexes want. There will, we understand, be a range of possibilities to review. It is hoped next steps will be agreed at the meeting. However, officials are stressing
that any decision about the sussexes future status will take time to be implemented. There is a desire for this to be agreed at pace. Draft proposals have been drawn up. We may get more proposals next week. In terms of ironing out the detail, there is a real appreciation that is going to ta ke real appreciation that is going to take time. The trickiest area will be to agree the financial position of the sussexes as they seek financial independence. There are likely to be Tax Implications of any decision to base themselves outside of the United Kingdom for any length of time. And Buckingham Palace will want tight protocols to prevent them cashing in too blatantly on their royal status. And underpinning it all is the human side, a rift most poignantly between two brothers. According to the sunday times, william has spoken to friends of his sadness at the bond which has now been broken. Ive put my arm around my
brother all our lives, he is quoted as saying. I cant do that any more. Nicholas witchell, bbc news. Werejoined now by leigh milner, who is in sandringham for us this morning. A busy week already for the queen, getting even busier next week, but she is expected at mass this morning in sandringham. That is right. We are expecting her within the next couple of hours. As you can see behind me, the railings are up, the photographers are just assembling step ladders, trying to get the best picture of her majesty who will be arriving hopefully in the next hour orso, arriving hopefully in the next hour or so, the service has started at akm, she might have missed that, she might be coming for the 11 name service at akm. She might be coming for the 11am service. In case you did not know, this is the church the royals use when they stay at sandringham in the winter period. Many of the family will be joining her this morning. Despite the palace calling a royal sum or very important family meeting, to you and i. Important family meeting, to you and i, it seems the queen is still going ahead with her plans as usual royal summit. The message she is giving today coming to church is that it giving today coming to church is thatitis giving today coming to church is that it is business as usual. What we have been told about the meeting so far is the prince of wales, the duke of cambridge, and the duke of sussex, will be meeting in sandringham tomorrow to discuss the future of prince harry and his wife. It is understood meghan currently in canada will be taking part in the meeting by video call. The palace has just a conclusion meeting by video call. The palace hasjust a conclusion might not meeting by video call. The palace has just a conclusion might not be reached by the end of the day. For now, thank you. The foreign secretary, dominic raab, has said iran was in breach of International Law after the arrest of the uks ambassador in tehran. Rob macaire was detained after attending a vigil for those
killed in the ukranian passenger plane that was shot down on wednesday. He was released after three hours. Our diplomatic correspondent, caroline hawley, is in beirut. How much of a diplomatic incident is this likely to be . The uk has put out a very strong statement. We dont know who detained rob macaire, which branch of the state, but the Iranian Foreign ministry intervened to get him released, britain has demanded a full explanation. Dominic raab urged iran to de escalate tensions. They have been running dangerously high particularly between the us and iran. It is in that context, this very febrile atmosphere, the horrific mistake appears to have been made to shoot down the plane leaving tehran with the deaths of 176 people. Yesterday
public gatherings to mourn the victims turned into protests and there were very angry shouts of, deaf to the liars, calls for the Supreme Leader to resign. Death. Great pressure at home and abroad and all eyes on how they respond at this very dangerous moment in the middle east. Im sure more to come on that later on today on the bbc, thank you. Let us bring you up to date with the rest of todays stories. The government is urging more people to visit local pharmacies to ease pressure on gps and hospitals. Figures this week show a e departments in england have experienced their worst month since waiting targets were introduced. Patients who call the nhs111 hotline are being directed to pharmacists for urgent medication for things like asthma and diabetes, as well as those with mild conditions, such as sore throats and earache. A fifth firefighter has been killed tackling blazes that are ravaging parts of australia. Four other emergency workers have

There have been five weeks of protests against the governments plans one of the longest strikes in french history. Its not the way many of us would want to spend a sunday in january, but nearly 100 people have gathered at a shrine in tokyo to wash themselves in icy cold water to welcome in the new year. The annual japanese ritual is traditonally held on the second sunday of this month. Its said to purify the soul, and people wish for good health in the coming year. The brave participants do not have
much protection against the five degrees temperaures, as you can see here. Particularly the men who were very little. The women have a little bit more. I went in the sea on new years day on the north devon coast, properly and, swimming. Not in a wet suit . I bet that was bracing. To say the least. Most people ran in and out again, but at least we could say we did it. I think i managed a minute. I went under. Well done. We did it. I think i managed a minute. Iwent under. Well done. Did you get the same feeling . M minute. Iwent under. Well done. Did you get the same feeling . It was a very good hangover cure, that much i can tell you. Onto other news now. The decision by the duke and duchess of sussex to step back from their roles as senior royals has dominated the headlines for days. Tomorrow, the queen, along with princes charles and william, will meet with prince harry at sandringham to discuss how the couple will move forward. Were joined now by royal historian victoria howard. Victoria, morning. Tomorrow, a big day, they will sit down in a room, try and thrash out what happens next and what is decided tomorrow could be instrumental not just and what is decided tomorrow could be instrumental notjust for harry and meghan but for the other royals. Absolutely. We will see this potential plan for the sussexes be implemented for younger royals in the future, may be Princess Charlotte and prince louis when they are older, they will not necessarily have the same role as prince george, future king. This could have lasting repercussions for the rest of the royals, how it is managed moving forward. From that point of view, all the controversy over this and whether it is the right thing and how they will manage finances and should they have consulted the queen, but actually, this is a reorganisation of the royal family that they were going to have to look at. Probably, yes. People have a lwa ys at. Probably, yes. People have always said that second child has
had a very vague, not really a specific role in the family, princess margaret, prince andrew, and now prince harry. This has probably been a long time coming, but now it has come out in a shocking way, i guess. The way it has come out is what has surprised many people, the timing, the fact the queen was not notified, but what is interesting, by putting this website up, almost with a manifesto, plan of what they want, if they dont get that, straightaway, we see there have been divisions and arguments and they are not getting their own way. It seems quite strange to have put it out so plainly rather than saying, we will step back a little and negotiate. Exactly. The fact they have put their details on the website, what they consider to be correct and what they consider to be correct and what they wanted, stay at frogmore cottage, keep their security, important people, we have seen su btle important people, we have seen subtle changes on the website in the
last few days, telling that discussions are ongoing and they are being steered in a particular way to macro these results are not coming out as they wanted them to. I think they jumped the gun out as they wanted them to. I think theyjumped the gun with the website in a particularway theyjumped the gun with the website in a particular way or these results. The queen, Prince Charles, duke of cambridge, duke of sussex, who holds the power in that dynamic . Who will be calling the shots . The queen, she is the matriarch, head of the family, always has been. I would not be surprised if Prince Philip was there to put his two pennies in. He is still a member of the family and ona he is still a member of the family and on a personal side, he rules in that way. I would not be surprised if we had about some input from him. But the queen will manage it and in the seniority order, she has the top job, most influence, and then it would be charles, william will have input, but harry is in the weaker position because he does not hold
the power. Management is the key word, we know the queen is not adverse to modernising. She knows it is necessary. But it is the way it is necessary. But it is the way it is done and communicated with eve ryo ne is done and communicated with everyone else that is important. Exactly. They would much prefer this had to be done behind closed doors. The funding issue, the most complicated area probably because taxpayers money is involved and because it has not been done before, it needs to be properly looked at. The government needs to be involved, home secretary. They definitely would have preferred it to be done behind closed doors and announced when it was sorted. I think the fact the palace commented they were going to have the sandringham summit speaks volumes, they want it sorted. It is complicated and they want to get it right because they are setting a precedent for future
generations, yet there is a great amount of pressure for some kind of resolution to emerge from this quite quickly, notjust because they dont wa nt quickly, notjust because they dont want everyone in the press to just be talking about this for the next however many weeks and months, but also, because. Iguess however many weeks and months, but also, because. I guess for the queens peace of mind, the rift between the family, if there is one, is in some way healed or patched up. Definitely. It is her instigation it is trying to be resolved as quickly as possible, the term sent out by the palace was at pace, days, not weeks. I expect to hear another statement will be, within the week. For the queen, probably more about the personalfamily for the queen, probably more about the personal family relationship, she does not want to see the tensions carried on. She wants to find the best solution. Notjust about harrys royal role, but the family role. She wants him to be happy, notjust family role. She wants him to be happy, not just about the family role. She wants him to be happy, notjust about the royaljob. Underlying all of this of course is the story on the front of the sunday times, william and harry, team players, but highlighting the apparent rift between the two brothers, seemingly, according to the critical, irreconcilable. William saying he has always tried to be there for his mother, put his arm around him, and at the minute, not on the same page for his brother. It has been going on for nearly two years, rumours of a rift and things, remains to be seen if it will improve. I remain positive this outcome will benefit everyone. Thank you for your thoughts. Busy week ahead for you. Thank you very much. Heres matt with a look at this mornings weather. Slightly quieter day before it gets tasty again next week. It is indeed. Good morning. Day before the storm, busy weather week ahead. Dont drift
too far from the full cost. After yesterdays strong winds and heavy rain, not windy, but the showers will ease the forecast. The rain is most prevalent, big batch across Northern England and north wales, sliding through the north of the midlands towards the east this morning. A few showers south of that, lively wintry showers over scotla nd that, lively wintry showers over scotland and wintry over Higher Ground. Longer and drier spells for many. Some showers particularly in the north west where it will be chilly. Maybe still double figures in the south as we finished the day. Chilly night. A few showers pushing through. Temperatures up and down. Clearer skies, could drop low enough for a touch of frost and ice tomorrow morning, especially in the northern half of the uk. Monday, you will start with sunshine in many areas, do not be filled, this area
of low pressure undergoing a process called rapid cycle genesis, dropping in pressure, strengthening through the day, big impacts in west in the afternoon. A few showers in the morning, breeze picking up, more persistent and at times torrential rain in Northern Ireland and western scotland, west and wales, western fringes of england by mid afternoon. Winds picking up, from southerly direction, lifting the temperatures, but the wind will have the biggest impact as we finish the afternoon and evening rush hour. Tomorrow evening, heavy rain, causing issues, the winds could be touching 50, 60 may be 70 miles an hour in the west, causing travel disruption, bridge restrictions, ferry cancellations, potentially damaging, could top 85 mph in the hebrides in the evening. Wettest a nd mph in the hebrides in the evening. Wettest and windiest weather sweeping across in the first part of the night, fading away through
monday night into tuesday. Staying windy in the north throughout, but the winds strengthen again tuesday, another area of low pressure pushing on. Right start again but heavy rain sweeping across england and wales, strongest winds on tuesday likely in the southern half of the country, 5060 the southern half of the country, 50 60 mph gusts possible, mild wind direction, northern half of the uk, could see snow, cold here, but all in all, as you said, getting lively this week, stay tuned to the full cost. Could be travel disruption before things turn quieter towards the forecast. I am focusing on drier towards the weekend thank you. Good morning, you are with breakfast on bbc news. From the army, to the navy
and the raf, the armed forces are now seen as some of the countrys most inclusive employers, but this was not always the case. Until 20 years ago today, it was illegal for servicemen and women to be gay, and many were dishonourably discharged and stripped of their medals. Werejoined now by emma riley and craig jones, both ex royal navy, to talk about their fight for equality. Thank you for coming in and talking to us. We will come to that case you took to europe, your legal case, it really was fundamental in helping to change the law. But tell us what it was like serving as a gay woman. You are not your full self, was like serving as a gay woman. You are not yourfull self, you was like serving as a gay woman. You are not your full self, you are co nsta ntly are not your full self, you are constantly looking over your shoulder, worrying about what someone might think if you say the wrong thing, touch than the wrong way, living with a massive damocles over your head. You cannot put your whole self into your work. Horrible way to live and work. Remind us of how it came out that you were gay, an awful experience for you personally. Unfortunately, itrusted the wrong person, i thought someone was my friend, i told them i felt i
was my friend, i told them i felt i was gay and the next morning i got woken up at six oclock saying, get dressed, downstairs, you are under arrest. They arrested me and went through all my belongings and confiscated letters, ajulian through all my belongings and confiscated letters, a julian clary video, it is ridiculous when you think about it, and they went through a process of taped interviews. Just a very long drawn out process. Interviews. Just a very long drawnout process. You had to effectively go home and tell your pa rents effectively go home and tell your parents who at that stage did not know, you are forced into it. They very kindly sent me on a train from scotla nd very kindly sent me on a train from scotland which was where i was down to where my parents were to not only have to tell them that i was being thrown out of the services but also have to come out as gay. I vividly remember that day. I actually cant talk about it without getting a bit emotional but i am very lucky both my parents were incredibly supportive and always have been and a lwa ys supportive and always have been and always will be. Although that was a
terrible thing to go through, ijust count myself very lucky it was those two people i had as parents. Your story is slightly different, you we re story is slightly different, you were not able to come out until the day the ban was lifted, craig. I joined in 1989 and i knew day the ban was lifted, craig. I joined in 1989 and i knew i was gay when ijoined joined in 1989 and i knew i was gay when i joined up. Joined in 1989 and i knew i was gay when ijoined up. I wanted to join up when ijoined up. I wanted to join up for all the reasons a young man wants tojoin up for all the reasons a young man wants to join the navy. Brilliant career, great place to be. But i set myself on a very complicated life. I met my now husband in 1995 and i we nt met my now husband in 1995 and i went from having nothing to hide to having really something difficult to hide. It was completely at odds to my career at the time. How did it ma nifest my career at the time. How did it manifest itself day to day . You are having to live the life of a straight person doing yourjob and in situations where you almost had to go so far to prove you were not 93v, to go so far to prove you were not gay, it actually became offensive in some respects. I remember having
what i would call a judas moment in the. The subject came up, 1996, i remembersaying, i the. The subject came up, 1996, i remember saying, i hope we dont have to serve with those people. Which was difficult to say. I am pleased i only ever said it once because i felt so bad afterwards. It had to end there. You took your case, emma, to the European Court of human rights, they will yourfavour. That was pivotal in changing the law backin that was pivotal in changing the law back in the uk. It was the only reason, frankly, i believe the law was changed when it did. If the four headline cases, myself and others, had not done that and gone to the European Court, the uk would not have changed the law for at least another decade, i think. Have changed the law for at least another decade, ithink. Also, the government at the time probably wa nted government at the time probably wanted to be able to blame the European Court for the change, if there was any backlash. Rather than actually stepping up and doing it
themselves. What i find tragic about your case is the career you could have had, the contribution you could have had, the contribution you could have made. Such a waste. That is the whole point. Even in 1999 when we we re whole point. Even in 1999 when we were going through the set of cases in the European Court, the army alone throughout nearly 300 people. Across all services, even if you equate it. 900 people thrown out, perfectly good competent patriotic and dedicated people being thrown out of a job that they want to do and are capable of doing for no other reason than they do not happen to love the same way as everyone else. My generation of servicemen and women are very else. My generation of servicemen and women are very grateful to people like emma who stepped forward and if they had not done that so many more of us would have been dismissed, including myself. 20 yea rs dismissed, including myself. 20 years later, the armed forces, among stonewalls top 100 employers in
terms of inclusivity and diversity, did you ever imagine when you were in interviews forjobs that it would ever get to that stage . in interviews forjobs that it would ever get to that stage . I did. I believe one day the ban will change. I thought it would take a lot longer. I remember being in a vetting interview in 1999 for high level of security clearance waiting for the question, we talked about all the things a vetting officer should talk about, lifestyle, drinking, whether you might be involved in drugs, and i was waiting for the question on homosexuality, andl for the question on homosexuality, and i think the tide had turned and the vetting officer said to me, having listened to all of your answers, commander, idont having listened to all of your answers, commander, i dont think i need to talk to you about homosexuality, is that correct . I thought, actually, i dont have to lie, no, you dont. Iwas thought, actually, i dont have to lie, no, you dont. I was thinking, lama lie, no, you dont. I was thinking, i am a very happy homosexual. So that was fine. But what i would say is well the armed forces today is an
amazing place for people to serve, i would join up again tomorrow if i had the chance, there is a huge amount of work to do to make sure our veterans, lg bt plus amount of work to do to make sure our veterans, lgbt plus veterans feel welcome, part of the team and are looked after. Quite a movement on that, Johnny Mercer saying, apologising, deep personal regret that opportunities were missed and unreservedly apologises to those affected. A very important move. Unreservedly apologises to those affected. A very important movem is the beginning. I met privately with the minister on thursday as the chief executive of fighting with pride, he has made it clear he wishes to move quickly to achieve greater support for his veterans and particularly those who are most affected by this ban and we will see change soon. Thank you very much, craig and emma. Thank you for the work you have done over the years,
greatly appreciated. That is run you through the front of the newspapers this sunday morning. Let us. The royal family continue to dominate coverage, with the sunday times saying Prince William has spoken of his sadness at the broken bond with his brother. The paper reports Prince William told a friend they are now separate entities. The mail on sunday says the duke and duchess of sussex will be given a reality check about the dire Financial Impact of their decision at tomorrows meeting with the queen. The implication is perhaps there are tax difficulties, they may get into, which they havent perhaps fully considered. Im thinking the royal protocol as well will take a lot of time. The mirror is reporting that prince harry and meghan told eltonjohn about their plans to step back as senior royals before they told the queen. According to the paper, the singer has been a shoulder to lean on. And away from the royals, the observer is leading with iran. It says the countrys leaders are facing possibly the biggest crisis since the 1979 islamic revolution, after admitting its forces shot down a passenger plane. Lets take a look at todays papers. Professor of politics Sirjohn Curtice is here to tell us whats caught his eye. Good morning. And that the royal stories this week, very easy for people may be to have missed landmark moments in Northern Ireland. Indeed. This has been a week in which the consequences of the election last month have begun to come through, one was the fact that you withdraw treaty we spent three and a half years arguing about has gone through the house of commons, the second consequence, the restoration of the devolved assembly in Northern Ireland which happened yesterday. The dup have now lost their leveraged inside the house of commons and they have lost seats so they felt under pressure to reform they felt under pressure to reform the executive. Sinn fein also losing votes. The government saying, if you dont manage to get your act together, we will hold another election. The interesting thing about this, often with a story, a picture is worth a thousand words. Arlene foster of the dup and Michelle Oneill alves sinn fein and the two of them sitting side by side smiling. What is very striking, remember, last time Northern Ireland government had to be restored after a long hiatus, what was the public face . The so called chuckle brothers. Both of course were the product directly of the treble. Now we see the face of politics in Northern Ireland, a part of our society where we think social change happens most slowly, two women the troubles. We now have an opposition Parliamentary Party the majority of which are women. It is a stark illustration of how many women will say the process needs to go further but i think the fact even in Northern Ireland the leaders of the two principal Political Parties are women is an indication of how women
are advancing in politics. Question of whether a woman will lead the labour party and at the moment the poll suggest possibly not. The polls are very poll suggest possibly not. The polls are very limited and the essential message is that most voters dont know who any of the new labour candidates are. Any of them. Including keir starmer the front runner, and of course tomorrow is the crucial deadline for the first stage of the process. They have to get 22 mps to say they want them to stand. Keir starmer, rebecca long bailey, jess phillips, lisa nandy, they have got past the threshold. Emily thornberry and clive lewis are currently struggling. Interesting thing i think about this, the way in which keir starmer is seemingly managing to gain the front person position. He is very clearly trying to position himself as on the one hand saying, look, we dont necessarily need to move away from the left wing position, he was attacking the free market in his launch in manchester
yesterday. But at the same time, equally, we should not be trashing the last labour government. He is very clearly trying both on the one hand to say to those who backed Jeremy Corbyn, look, i will still carry the more left wing flag Jeremy Corbyn was in favour of, but equally, i am corbyn was in favour of, but equally, iam not corbyn was in favour of, but equally, i am not necessarily going to create the distance from new labour. Huge challenge to straddle between Jeremy Corbyn labour. Huge challenge to straddle betweenJeremy Corbyn and moderates. If he is going to be able to win the election, he has to appeal to corbynistas and to bring back into the mainstream of the Parliamentary Party many of those who fell out with Jeremy Corbyn, party many of those who fell out withJeremy Corbyn, people like yvette cooper, hilary benn, he has to appeal to that wing of the party. A very interesting balancing act. Equally, good news yesterday for rebecca long bailey because people who run momentum saying they back care. Way, they will also ballot
their members they back her. Keeping this brief, a lot of the papers delving into all sorts of weird and wonderful facts about what they tell us about their plans for harry and meghan. A group of royal correspondence missed this, apparently, when harry and meghan went to canada in novemberfor an extended family break, meghan took her two dogs, that was a clue she was not necessarily coming back, it was not necessarily coming back, it was pointed out she loved the dogs, one was moved to london when she came to marry harry and he was the clue this was not a temporary holiday but actually more permanent. The crucial. Never mind she left the baby there, it is the dogs. Thank you so much. Stay with us, 02 30 57,262 4294966103 13 29,430 headlines next. See you soon
