You might be pleased by a bit more sunshine across the uk but its a chilly start deal friday morning. Detours details on that and your full weekend forecast coming up. Good morning its friday, 10th january. Our top story. The United States, canada and britain have all said that the ukrainian airliner which crashed near tehran on wednesday was shot down by iranian forces. Theyve suggested iran may have launched missiles in error. Officials in tehran have dismissed the claim. Four britons were among the 176 People Killed in the crash. Nada tawfik reports from toronto. Us media say these images appear to show the moment the ukrainian airliner was hit by an Iranian Missile, minutes after takeoff. A small explosion occurs and the jet, now in flames, tries to turn back towards the tehrans airport. But within minutes, the planes signal is lost and it crashes with 176 people on board. 63 canadians were among the dead. Prime Ministerjustin Trudeau says the governments preliminary conclusions show irans anti Missile System accidentally shot down the plane. We have intelligence from multiple sources including our allies and our own intelligence. The evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by an iranian surface to air missile. This may well have been unintentional. Also in canada, foreign secretary dominic raab addressed the tragedy after borisjohnson confirmed the death toll now includes four british citizens. The Iranian Regime must open up to the international community, including access to the crash site so we can get the truth as quickly as possible to give the families of the victims and understanding of what happened to their loved ones. The answers and evidence lie here at the crash site. Iranian officials have ruled out a missile strike, calling the allegations illogical rumours and psychological warfare. Across canada, more vigils are being held. People here are continuing to bring flowers and candles for the victims. The focus is very much on mourning their lost love ones. They do want to know what caused this horrific tragedy, but they are happy to wait for an investigation that is full and thorough. Finding the answers they are looking for could take months and even years as the investigation unfolds. Nada tawfik, bbc news, toronto. Lets talk to our correspondent, jonah fisher who is in the ukranian capital, kyiv. First of all, we have these images that have come from the us networks. Bring us up to date. That have come from the us networks. Bring us uptodate. Taking off in the very early hours of wednesday morning. The plane crashed shortly afterwards. This anger has been pointed, the iranian said very strenuously denied it and investigations will continue. Iran is said it will allow american canadian investigators to take part in the aeroplane manufacture of boeing stop quite what they will all find by the time they get to tehran is another question because there have been boards from the crash scene that over the last 48 hours, the iranian s have been conducting the iranian s have been conducting the bulldozing of what could be important evidence. The duchess of sussex has returned to canada just days after flying back to britain from a six week holiday there. The duchess and prince harry have announced they want to step back from their roles as Senior Members of the royal family. The queen, Prince Charles and Prince William have instructed their staff to find a solution within a matter of days. Simon jones has more. Prince harry and meghans first public appearance this year, a visit on tuesday to canadas high commissioner in london to thank the country for showing them more than hospitality during the six week break over christmas. And now meghan is already flown back there while prince harry remains in the uk to deal with the shock announcement that they want to step back as senior royals and enjoy financial independence. In toronto, there is sympathy. I respect the fact that they are trying to make their own way in the world. They are a young couple. They are trying to do things different. I think she didnt want she wanted to go back to being independent and private. Thats what Buckingham Palace is now grappling with. The queen, Prince Charles and Prince William have told their staff to find a way forward quickly but royal watches are split on how easy that would be. I think its really difficult to propose to be half in and half out of the royal family stop it is a team and you are either full member of the team or i think you have to leave the team entirely. They seem to be talking about going to live in canada which is a monarchy in its own right and i take them at their word. They dont want to be non royal, they dont want to be semi detached royals. Arian meghan on new website theyve launched talk about finding a progressive new role and despite their announcement, its still not clear what will be. Simonjones, bbc news. Thanks harry and meghan. Simon is at Buckingham Palace for us this morning. Simon, whats the reaction from the palace . How is this stepping back going to emanate . I was standing on the spot talking to you, describing the sense of disappointment and hurt. Thats putting it mildly. They had been warned in advance that they were going to release a statement. You get the sense palace officials are going to get this sorted quickly. That talking about trying to make progress in a matter of days rather than weeks or months. We see many times past the monarchy is the quickest to adapt to change. She has returned to canada having spent around three days in the uk. What does show is she feels a great sense of hunger and thats adding to the belief that when the couple talk about spending half their time perhaps in north america, its likely to be in canada. I think the key thing the discussion is the idea that meghan and harry want to be financially independent. Whatever they decide to do, it will be open to scrutiny,. After three years of deadlock, the main Political Parties in Northern Ireland are considering a draft deal to restore power sharing at stormont potentially by the end of the day. The british and irish governments put forward the proposal last night, describing it as a fair compromise which contained something for everyone. Power sharing collapsed three years ago following a dispute between sinn fein and the dup. Not all the documents are agreed by all the parties. Some are commitments by each government. But i believe we have a deal that all parties in Northern Ireland can support. My message to the public is very direct. Tell your politicians to take this opportunity. Demand the Better Future that this deal delivers and we can create a more tolerant inclusive and generous place here in Northern Ireland. Were still going to see some rain at times through ireland and scotland. We could see as much is 100 millimetres of rain. Taking us through the next 36 hours. Not a great deal here if you want to get out and about. Breaks in the cloud to the north east of scotland. Some rain into the far north of wales. Further south, drier throughout your saturday but quite a windy day across the board. Wins 40, maybe 50, 60 Miles Per Hour in the north and west but mild wind once again, temperatures in double figures for the vast majority. Squeeze the ways the vast majority. Squeeze the ways the weather front pushes south. Rain for many parts as we go through saturday into sunday morning. Still holding onto the mild hour. Back to pressure conditions almost into sunday. These are temperatures as we start sunday morning a touch of frost further north but compared with saturday, the northern half of the country much brighter showers push through. Where do you stand on the issue of skinny jeans . Not on my radar. I love that it is an issue, not a fashion choice. I like the fa ct not a fashion choice. I like the fact that men have to think about it as well. We have been suffering for years it has been the bane of w0 m e nswea r years it has been the bane of womenswear for yea rs. It is big business beyonce is launching a sportswear brand, we would not normally talk about this but it would be big because she is launching it with adidas this morning, and it is because athleisure is big business and lots of celebrities, they jump athleisure is big business and lots of celebrities, theyjump on the bandwagon with their own brands. I cannot imagine it would be that comfortable but every athlete will be sleeping on but every athlete will be sleeping o n re cycle d but every athlete will be sleeping on recycled cardboard beds. I just. I mean. Is thatjust the base . No, the entire bed. The mattress . Apparently it can take the weight of someone up to 30 stone which would cover most. Shotput is maybe not. And i want to draw your attention to this. Super league, jacob miller, delivered his wifes baby. Which, i mean, for someone who is usually pretty good at catching, you would like to think he was the right man for the job but i think it was an ordeal for him. Delivered very healthy. But, yeah, apparently a few people on his team, fathers to be, who said if he is available. useful skill did you want to show a picture . Oh, well. Oh if we have time. Or not. And snoring. There is a Science Behind it. Lets get more on one of our main stories this morning. The duchess of sussex has flown back to canada after the shock announcement that she and prince harry are stepping back from their royal duties. Lets speak to scott fee, whos news editor at a local tv station in victoria. Very good morning to you and thank you for speaking to us. We are of the understanding that meghan is on her way back to canada as we speak. What do you know about the movements because obviously they were there for a period of time so what can you tell us . A lot of buzz here right now, charlie, and currently as we speak in our International Airport in victoria, which is much smaller than what you may be used to at heathrow but still a significant one, there is a lot of media already there and it is interesting, the airport, because you walk out of the plane and there is no tunnel or gateway, you get on the tarmac and you walk into the main terminal, kind of old school, and right now, along with a couple of our cameras, there are other networks there right now staked out on both sides of the terminal watching for the private jet side. There has been onejet landed several hours ago, royal blue in colour with a white belly and were trying to get tail number on it. It could have been there, it could have been there for 15 minutes or 45 could have been there for 15 minutes or45 and could have been there for 15 minutes or 45 and there is a black range rover part next to it so were keeping an eye out and there is a lot of buzz. Let me ask you, it begs the question that you are a news editor and you said your cruiser out there and one of the things the royal couple were hoping to get from canada, if this is a place of refuge for them, was an escape from the media and from what you have set out there, is already turning into something entirely different crews out there. Yeah, there is no question that what is different here for us in particular in victoria which has a long legacy, long connection and a warm connection, co mforta ble connection and a warm connection, comfortable connection with the monarch, there is going to be a backlash here, we are seeing it already on twitter and in our e mails that people want us to leave them alone so granted, were going to have to be careful and we have to sure were not stalking and we have to keep it at arms length here is a local station but i can tell you there is media from across country and around the world, from your country, across the pond, that are looking to set up shop here and are calling outlets trying to figure out where they can base themselves so the tabloids are en route if not already here. Will be taken more respectful tone with this . We would like to, as best we can, but it is one of the biggest stories in the world right now and we will cover it but do we see ourselves parked out in the driveway . Probably not. This is obviously a decision that all news editors have to take all the time, you have tojudge news editors have to take all the time, you have to judge the appetite of your viewers for the way that you are treating the story and what is your sense from the people you are speaking to, ordinary people, as it were, as to how they are feeling about the potential move of the couple to your area . About the potential move of the couple to your area . I think they love it. I think they are proud. I think they are proud of the idea of the royals finding this a co mforta ble the royals finding this a comfortable place for them to be and, like comfortable place for them to be and, like i said, in particular in victoria there is a huge connection to the monarch. I think they are embracing it and they would want people to leave them alone and they are hoping people would leave them alone and i think we have some responsibility to be a part of the story and to move the story forward as the rest of the world is paying attention to it but i think there is attention to it but i think there is a line and certainly, for us, again, we are a much smaller the whole population of Vancouver Island is 7300 so we are a smaller market than what we you are used to and other people may be used to so we will ta ke people may be used to so we will take probably a little more conservative approach to it but it does not mean they will be left alone because there were helicopters flying around vancouver waiting for a different flight, coming in from heathrow wondering if she was on any of those flights. One last thing, they have obviously spent quite a bit of time there recently. Did it come down over that period of time . Iimagine come down over that period of time . I imagine there was interest. Initially they got there but was there some form of calm . What was so interesting about that, charlie, about them being hit is the fervour didnt kick up until after they left and we all saw the photo that harry put out with the west coast picture in the background and he was Holding Archie in his arms and that was when the story started coming out, cafe sent restaurants and a hiker that was wandering around in a popular hiking trail and bumped was wandering around in a popular hiking trailand bumped into was wandering around in a popular hiking trail and bumped into meghan cafe is and restaurants. They cannot afterwards. We did not see a lot of pictures or selfies, people we re lot of pictures or selfies, people were respectful, and they came out later and in fact it was after that that us weekly in the us, tabloids across the pond was starting to call and contact those individuals and thatis and contact those individuals and that is when the buzz started. Really, when they were here, it was pretty calm. Interesting to hear your thoughts, scott. But pretty calm. Interesting to hear yourthoughts, scott. But he pretty calm. Interesting to hear your thoughts, scott. But he scott who is news editor at chek tv, a network in vancouver. It is 26 minutes past six. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Through the night, quite chilly because initially, we are dry and clear. Temperatures should lift as we go through tomorrow morning. Before we see some cloud moving in, we could see a patch of ground frost out towards the suburbs. Tomorrow, a lot of dry weather for daylight hours. Cloudy though and breezy as well. One of the most unsatisfactory elements is after matthew died, members of staff went to the care plan and changed it to makers look as though there was a care plan in place before he died. That is disgraceful. In the member of staff was disciplined by the regulator. But that shouldnt happen. Anyone else that falsified a document after an event, especially a death, a death of a young man and they falsified a document, im. Death of a young man and they falsified a document, im. Yeah, it sickens me. Essex Partnership University trust has apologised to melanie. In a statement, they said but melanie remains unconvinced. She now wa nts but melanie remains unconvinced. She now wants a full public enquiry. Patients dying in mental institutions where they are meant to be safe is a significant problem across the country. Melanie has now gathered more than 100,000 signatures to get the issue raised in parliament. If we can get this to a debate and i think anyone within the Mental Health system in this country will have a voice. So not just for matthew, for every single one of those boys and girls, every single one of you thats been bailed. Just personally with me, i cannot leave it because i want to help them. My son would want to help them to. So yeah, i will carry on. My them to. So yeah, i will carry on. My life changed and if i can help, i will. Heres matt with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. Its definitely feeling more chilly lately. It is this morning but quite mild to the time of year. This morning, very morning stockings are much colder than they were this time yesterday stop let me contrast that. Yesterday, we saw protestant parts of scotland. 11, 12 degrees in cardiff or london. A good six or seven celsius below. A much chillier start right across the board. There is some good news on the forecast. If you had enough of rain, you get a respite. Cloud away between, partly broken cloud. A few isolated early showers. They will clear through. Most of you, dry day. Gales across the west. We will see ranges into the west. We will see ranges into the north west of Northern Ireland as we had towards the friday evening rush hour. Temperatures in the afternoon a bit lower than yesterday. Much better given the fa ct we yesterday. Much better given the fact we got the sunshine. At times, into the very far north of england. Gales developing widely as well. Its all bringing in milder hour. Tonight be warmer in this afternoon. Temperatures for some will be climbing into double figures and thats because we will be seeing the air dragged all the way up from the mid atlantic right across the country. Still that weather front with us from the Northern Edge of the milder air. Outbreaks of rain in scotla nd the milder air. Outbreaks of rain in scotland and Northern Ireland. The best of the dry weather to the north and north east of scotland but in parts of south west scotland, around argyll and butte, 100 millimetres of rain falling on the next day or so. The rain spreads down in the far north of england. Particularly around hills and coasts. Especially gusty to the east of high ground. The milder with us, temperatures around 11 13 celsius so way above where we should be. We should see some rain in fact during saturday night and introducing chillier conditions again to the northern half of the country as we start sunday morning and a touch of frost and ice around for some. After some rain in the south east corner, dry weather to come. Some showers squatted dotted through the day, wintry over Higher Ground but it will feel cooler than saturday. And before i 90, cooler than saturday. And before i go, to let you know tonight is a full moon. It is the wolfman tonight, in leeds for instance, moonrise is about 44 minutes past three and the full moon is just after 21 minutes past seven. And you get the penumbral eclipse to go with it so get the penumbral eclipse to go with itsoa get the penumbral eclipse to go with it so a slight shattering across the moon during the full moon for moon during the full moon it so a slight shattering across the moon during the full moon for you. Back to you both. Will we be able to seeit . Back to you both. Will we be able to see it . There should be a bit of this guy around, away from the far north and west of scotland. North western scotland, is that the best place to see it . No, further south and east. Club will increase up south and east. Club will increase up north but clear skies down south. There we go. Cloud will increase. That is what i will be doing this evening thank you, matt heres a question. What occasion would you wear trainers for . Before you begin that. Leggings . Leggings . Were talking about athleisure and i was keen to know, is that a phrase you have learned this morning . Being something that isa this morning . Being something that is a sportswear that you do not wear for sport but you wear for other things. Everyone knows that, apparently, apart from me. Or if you do want to play sport and you want to look better than you do to you may spend more on the fashion of what you are getting on the treadmill in or going out for a run. There is a lot of money to be made. It is becoming like fast fashion, isnt it . For people wearing it out and we will go through some of the figures. That is where the growth is, not where people are participating in sport. The amount we are spending overall, that is up 20 on athleisure since 2014, so over the last five years, we have been working out we have spent £7 billion more than we did five years ago. If we look at where it is, the research kantar ago. If we look at where it is, the research ka ntar book ago. If we look at where it is, the research kantar book this, on sport, for trainers, trainers in particular, down but up nearly 40 kantar looked at this. Particular, down but up nearly 40 kantar looked at this. So people do divide their trainers to the ones that you take to the gym or squash or whatever to the ones you wear out with. Completely, and that. Completely . You know what i mean this is so not my territory. It could be and the average spend for a pairof trainers, could be and the average spend for a pair of trainers, you may spend a bit more and the average spend per person is over £90. Really . How much is that per item . Per pair not each foot . You break it down over time now so you save up foot . You break it down over time now so you save up for one leg. The average buyer of trainers. You know. That is a lot of money. People feel like it is worth it so what kind of things are they buying and how high are they willing to go . Jayne went out and had a look. She also coined a new economic term while she was out for this kind of spending. Welcome, come in. Thank you. Step into the world of sneaker heads. The most sought after other jordan into the world of sneaker heads. The most sought after otherjordan one sneaker. Ok. Most expensive is the off white jordan unc. 1500. Sneaker. Ok. Most expensive is the off whitejordan unc. 1500. Yeezy 700, yeezy 350. They all made by kanye 700, yeezy 350. They all made by ka nye west. 700, yeezy 350. They all made by kanye west. Are you . Sneakers, trainers, whatever you call them, they are big business in the realm ofa they are big business in the realm of a bigger business of athleisure. Which we will now have modelled for us. Give us a 12. This is emerge by billy iliffe. She is an artist. How much . £800. Billy eilish. Jaidee sport is one of the high streets biggest stories, limited ranges there are snapped up and sometimes sold here. Only 200 pairs released or Something Like that and the Sneaker Community in manchester will cue up to get their hands on a shoe and come straight to hear and sell it on to us. And make may be 100 £200 profit. And you can make a profit on that again . It is good for everyone trickle down sneakeromics. I thought it was funny sales of trainers for sport are down over the last ten years but the sale of trainers forfashion is last ten years but the sale of trainers for fashion is up almost one third. We love them. Thomas, looking quite box fresh. Yes. Can i ask, are you buying your sports footwear for sport . No. Show me your trainers. What is the most you have spent on a pair . 8000. £8,000 . No show me your trainers. Would you go to work in trainers . Yeah. I have been to work on the shoes today. Patricia, a restaurant . Yes yes how about a wedding . No, not for a wedding. Dance floor . Trainers, without a doubt. Athleisure, it is not always cheap but it is always co mforta ble. Jayne mccubbin, bbc news. There are so many issues with that £8,000 ona there are so many issues with that £8,000 on a pair of trainers . Alligator leather, apparently. Also, while all those trainers wrapped in plastic . They are probably for resale. What they do in the store, as we are hearing a little bit there, they are Brand New Limited Edition trainers and they will have queues at the door at the high street store and they will whip around the corner and go to a place like that and obviously, if they have been in a box and they have gone through that movement they want to protect them for longer because they are worth that much. That is why they have the added protection and the retail resale market is meant to be worth more than £70 billion because people view them as collectors. I know someone who actually provides a service to sell, find. Yeah, there are stores in town popping up find. Yeah, there are stores in town popping up for keeping your trainers in top nick. It is a top market. After seven ami will look at howjd sports are doing because they have capitalised on the interest 7am i will look. Have you learned a lot about this today . Yes very serious money involved theyre a familiar sight across northern towns but could old, often derelict industrial mills actually be the key to regenerating the area . In the first survey of its kind, Historic England has found almost 600 of the buildings could be prime candidates to convert into space for new homes and businesses. But as our correspondent Coletta Smith has been finding out, its no easy task. With thousands of workers heading in four shifts, the sole textile mill was the beating heart of wigan for nearly 100 years. But now, page feel mill isjust a nearly 100 years. But now, page feel mill is just a shell, totally derelict. There is only vandals and pigeons within the walls now. Derelict. There is only vandals and pigeons within the walls nowm derelict. There is only vandals and pigeons within the walls now. It has been empty since 2006. The council would love it to change but they know it needs to happen quick. We need to keep working to get a viable scheme that brings us brings as much of the Building Back into use as it can and i think we are otherwise in danger of actually getting to a Tipping Point where that becomes incredibly difficult. Historic england safe we do not act now within the next few years, hundreds of mills could be lost for ever. It is the skyline that we all know and are aware of and it is what built the towns and cities that we all use and live in so the buildings and the chimneys are really critical to our heritage in the north west of yorkshire. Here we have the department. There are some developers willing to take that risk, stump up the money and wait longerfor the work to risk, stump up the money and wait longer for the work to be done. You have got the old beams that exposed brickwork and flooring and all of these Different Things that you can really make the most of and bring out. These flats sell in Central Manchester but it would not work in a little town, would it . In some of those other towns i think the Public Sector needs to get involved because without it, at the moment, some of those buildings will get worse and worse and worse and if you can save them and regenerate them, but is what attracts people to want to live in those towns. Exactly what they have done in halifax, 5000 staff used to work here in den cloth mill is costly carpets was once upon a time the biggest carpet maker in the world. Plenty of people thought he was mad butjeremy saw a way to resurrect it. I think a good dose of na ivety resurrect it. I think a good dose of naivety and optimism wasnt undoubtably called for. It has been a gradual process restoring, one little section at a time. This beauty has taken more than 30 years to reach this point. The town has been moulded and influenced by that business and all that has occurred here on all of the thousands of people that have worked on this site andi people that have worked on this site and i think in that way, i think people, rightly, feel it is their place, it is their environment. And lots of the hundred and 50 businesses based here to see it as their own. These buildings that we are in now were built in 1841 and i do not think they have been occupied for 50 yea rs do not think they have been occupied for 50 years other than by pigeons. So to have the opportunity to create something really amazing for our people but also to bring the Building Back to life, it was the nicest opportunity you could have. Just one pearl in the necklace strong across the north of england, forming the original northern powerhouse. It will take more of this level of cash and this kind of love to bring more mills to life. Coletta smith, bbc news. The great thing about those buildings as well as they seem to be surrounded by beautiful countryside. So really good views so if it does not come off, nice place to live. Absolutely. It is 56 minutes past six. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning from bbc london. Im vanessa baffoe. Staying dry and temperatures slipping away, despite that sunshine. 7 9 celsius the top temperature. Through the night tonight, its going to be quite chilly because initially, we are dry and clear. Temperatures should lift as move through towards tomorrow morning. But before we see some cloud moving in, we could see a patch of ground frost out towards the suburbs. Then tomorrow, a lot of dry weather for daylight hours. It will be fairly cloudy, though, and breezy as well. Thats in advance of some rain heading towards us for the evening. But a top temperature tomorrow again lifting back up into double figures 11 or 12 celsius well above average for the time of year. Start with a bit of rain around first thing on sunday morning but then we turn dry and bright in the afternoon. Know what good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. It is drier and sunnier but eventually this morning. Your full weekend forecast coming up. Good morning its friday, 10th january. Our top story. The United States, canada and britain have all said that the ukrainian airliner which crashed near tehran on wednesday was shot down by iranian forces. They suggested that iran may have launched the missiles in error. Lets speak now to our middle east editor, jeremy bowen, whojoins us from baghdad. Jeremy, whats the reaction been there . Could you take us through the iranian reaction . This of course now on the basis that the uk, america and canada are all saying there is evidence that an Iranian Missile was. Its a flat denial. Theyve also put it squarely in the context of the conflict theyre having with the americans and their allies by saying that psychological warfare. In other words, an attempt to make them look bad. On the other hand, shooting down a civilian airliner full of people, whether you do it accidentally, if the state does that accidentally, if the state does that accidentally they look bad anyway. They look as if they are not in control of what they have and if they do it deliberately, they will look much, much, much worse so whichever way you look at it, iran is under a lot of pressure. Talk was a bit more about the qualities. Who gets a ccess a bit more about the qualities. Who gets access to the site, the box, all of those things that would routinely stage be happening under circumstances . Well, it was not long that the plane crashed long after it left the airport. They said very quickly that the flight recorders had been retrieved on the iranian is also said they wouldnt go to the us they wouldnt go to boeing, question, would they allow ukrainians to look at them . I watched canadian Prime MinisterJustin Trudeau yesterday and he suggested he had a good Iranian Foreign minister stop but normally in this sort of thing, there is a full investigation going on, you have experts going all over the site picking up the little bits and pieces and they take them all the way and they try and say, with the lockerbie bombing, they reassemble as much as they can the aircraft and get some idea of whats happened and of course they will get the information from the black books flight information from the black books flight recorder. If the iranian s dont allow them access and dont give them any of that information, then i cant see how they could possibly have any kind of investigation which of course makes things much worse for the families involved. Thank you very much, jeremy. The duchess of sussex has returned to canada just days after flying back to britain from a six week holiday there. Harry and meghan have announced they want to step back from their roles as Senior Members of the royal family. The queen, Prince Charles and Prince William have instructed their staff to find a solution within a matter of days. Our correspondent simonjones is at Buckingham Palace for us this morning. Simon, whats the reaction from the palace . This is very immediate now stop yes, they want quick action at the palace but what is clear is that any immediate discussions about the future of the royal couple are going to ta ke future of the royal couple are going to take base without meghan being here in person because she has now gone back to canada having spent three days in the uk following their christmas break. She was last seen in public on tuesday at canadas high commission. She went there with harry to thank the canadian people for the warmth and hospitality they had received during the christmas week. What that shows us is meghan feels at home in canada so when the couple speak about wanting to split the time between the uk north america, they are speaking about spending a lot of in canada. Terms of the discussions, i was standing here talking to about the of disappointment and hurt felt by senior roles of the palace. They hadnt been warned in advance that meghan and harry were going to publish a statement knowing they we re publish a statement knowing they were going to get a new role and move away from the traditional members of the royal family. Today you get a sense among the royal officials that its time to get this sorted. They want this done within a matter of days rather than weeks. Having said that in the past, with the monarchy, its always the quickest to adapt to change. Simon, thank you very much. After three years of deadlock, the main Political Parties in Northern Ireland are considering a draft deal to restore power sharing at stormont potentially by the end of the day. The british and irish governments put forward the proposal last night, describing it as a fair compromise which contained something for everyone. Our ireland correspondent chris page is at stormont for us now. Chris, what are the chances of this deal being accepted . Yes, charlie. After many months of talks, really quite a bold move last night to break the deadlock and bring back power sharing to the Stormont Assembly as soon as the end of today as you say. All the weather and sport coming up later stop families of british nationals held prisoner in iran are calling stop prisoner in iran are calling on the government to do more to secure the release of their loved ones. It comes after a week of violence and escalating tension in the region. Joining us now from our london newsroom is richard ratcliffe. His wife Nazanin Zaghari ratcliffe has been detained in the country since 2016. And here in the studio is sherry izadi, her husband Anoosheh Ashouri has served two years of a ten year sentence. Richard, if we could first start with you. You must have real concerns right now. What indications are you hearing. What contacts have you had. Ithink are you hearing. What contacts have you had. I think is a very tough time when you hear other events. Its just really sad stop in terms of what contact with had with the government, we should meet the Foreign Office in a couple of hours time stop calling for a meeting with the foreign secretary. Well be calling to find out when we can do that. Talk to us about your husband. He was jailed in iran for ten years on espionage charges. And given two yea rs on espionage charges. And given two years for acquiring illegitimate wealth after being caught with a certain amount of money. Where is he in what contact do you have . Is held in the same prison. He was given a 10 in the same prison. He was given a 10 year sentence in a 2 year sentence. Hes been there two years now and five months. What indications are you getting . The reason were talking to you is the tensions and the reason. What indication are you getting of your husbands safety or conditions there . I spoke to him yesterday. The day before that when we talked, he asked me to record a short message for him. I was quite surprised and i said ok, so when i recorded it, it sort of set, i just want to say weve been together 39 years. Ijust wa nted weve been together 39 years. Ijust wanted to say i love you very much and if wanted to say i love you very much and if i dont get a chance to say it again and when he said that, it really clicked on my mind that they must be so worried to leave a message that sounds like the last message. They were just worried about backlash on the prisoners. They had actually tightened. The guards . Sometimes from the guards as well two years, god have threatened them. To us, we would kill you all, we would be keeping an incident paying the cost stop is your husband able to find out information about recent events . News channel in prison so they get the news, well, according to the whitemoor media, but they have got, all other prisoners have contact with theirfamilies all other prisoners have contact with their families and usually the news gets spread quickly. Richard, you are a friend of the programme and we have spoken many times. You are very and we have spoken many times. You are very familiar with the whole, the political process and trying to get government to make statements or intervene. What information or what kind of indication have you been given of any protective words, so to speak, for prisoners in iran . The only thing i am aware of is the Prime Minister spoke to her yesterday and i guess a number of other people and called for their release and i guess that in itself isa release and i guess that in itself is a protection and being on the airwave and sharing as a way of protecting our families but beyond that, it is precisely what i will be asking the Foreign Office when we have a meeting and what they can do andl have a meeting and what they can do and i going to do because it is a vulnerable case, this is a situation where there are a lot of angry people and vulnerability and it is incredibly stressful for the people involved and nazanin was taken down to the clinic overnight two months ago with heart palpitations and panic attacks so i think it is important the government do what it can. Talking to sherry in the studio and she was saying about the threats of the guards and kind of the hostility. If you had any indication of that tension rising where nazanin is . Sherrys husband is in the mens wing of the same prison that nazanin is in. I think the mens wing is typically rougher and there are threats made to the families but nazanin has not had anything direct in the past couple of days. She has been taken as i said to the clinic because she was having panic attacks and been put on beta blockers to calm down. But no, i think normally we expect things to happen in a week orten we expect things to happen in a week or ten days, fortnight later, so there is kind of a foreboding that is affecting all of the prisoners but ive not seen any direct threats. You and richard obviously share a great deal in common in the concern for your loved ones. In terms of practical measures, who you can talk to, who is listening to you, what is happening . We have been talking to the Foreign Office. We have had meetings with both foreign ministers, with mrjeremy hunt and mr dominic raab but in practical terms, nothing has been done. They offer support. They offer, you know, they always say we are there for you and you can come in and tell us any of your concerns. They obviously convey that during iran and they convey that during iran and they conveyit convey that during iran and they convey it to their counterparts but in radical terms, nothing has been. Presumably you would like some indication, at least that, given the heightened International Issues that are ongoing, that your loved ones, you know, are being thought about. Yes, exactly, exactly. There was a good sign yesterday when, i think, the Prime Minister spoke to president rouhani for about 20 minutes on the phone and when my husband rang, he knew about, he knew it before i did, actually, and he said is that a good sign . Actually, and he said is that a good sign . So any sort of, any talks on that level are obviously, you know, helpful. But beyond that, we dont know. We want to see more concrete steps being taken. Thank you very much. Sherry and richard, thank you very much for your time. Thank you both. It is 19 minutes past seven. Heres matt with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. Morning to you well. Todays a full moon across the continent. Heading towards it set a crossed option and endeavours by one of our weather watchers but what you will notice if you are about to step out the door this morning, a good deal chillier than yesterday, across southern areas yesterday it was 11 or 12 southern areas yesterday it was 11 or12 and southern areas yesterday it was 11 or 12 and foster further north but here temperatures substantially lower this morning than yesterday morning. It will be much chillier there. Temperatures actually closer to where we should be at this time of the year. There is good news to go with it, if you do not like the chilled area of cloud that brought the rain yesterday is moving and another pushing in for later but in between, a zone of fine dry weather. More sunshine, dryer for many. Between, a zone of fine dry weather. More sunshine, dryerfor many. Some showers in east anglia and the south east and later the cloud will be thickening to the west of ireland, west of scotland, bringing and gales but almost you will stay dry during the day, his pulse continue, temperatures around 5 10, lower than yesterday but higher than we should be. Into this evening and overnight, the rush hour could be wet across scotland and Northern Ireland. May be preceded by snow over Higher Ground. A windy night across many northern areas. A breeze picking up south. Cloud increases after a brief frost in the middle of the night. These other sort of temperatures into tomorrow morning. Many in the north of the country particularly, a warmer start to tomorrow than it would be this afternoon, because the air has been dragged from the mid atlanticjust on the forward side of these weather fronts which is bringing the rain through the night to scotland, Northern Ireland and Northern England that will sit in roughly the same areas tomorrow so it could be wet for much of the day across scotland, Northern Ireland cumbria, maybe northumberland as well. Some parts of north east scotland will stay largely dry. We will see some rain fringe into the north of wales and good parts of england and wales will stay dry but it will be breezy. Winds touching 4050, maybe 60 miles an hourand winds touching 4050, maybe 60 miles an hour and gusting to the east of high ground but as i say, mild and temperatures up again higher than they should be for this time of year in many parts around 11 13. The air squeezes away through saturday night into sunday morning to the south east corner and still remain lingering here to start the but further north and west, clear skies to ta ke further north and west, clear skies to take us into sunday morning and again, a return of of central and northern scotland. A scattering of showers through the day, especially Western Areas and wintry over Higher Ground in scotland. Paired with saturday, a lot more sunshine around for many and it will feel cooler, temperatures 5 10. Back to the milder theme as we go into next week. With it, some pretty windy weather at times, certainly a week to keep a close eye on the forecast. That is how it is looking. We are warned and we always keep a close eye on the forecast when you are on, matt. I hope so it is 22 minutes past seven. Lets return to one of our top stories now, and that attack on five members of staff at whitemoor prison, in cambridgeshire. Counter Terrorism Police have been called in to investigate the stabbing because the two suspects were allegedly wearing fake suicide vests and shouting allahu akbar. One of them was already serving time for a terror offence. Were joined now by Mick Pimblett, from the prison officers union, the poa. Good morning to you. Good morning. Tha nkfully good morning to you. Good morning. Thankfully we understand, i think, that someone who was most seriously injured has been released from hospital. And medical care. But the injuries have been sustained. What does it do to morale in the prison amongst those staff . The role amongst those staff . The role amongst the staff and also prisoners and partners, obviously affected the morale. The confidence of the staff will be affected and they will have concerns about whether they can carry out theirjob in the environment without the correct personal protective equipment within the jail. What do they have at the moment . Staff would be in possession ofan moment . Staff would be in possession of an extendable button and they would be trained in restraints, techniques baton. They would be in handcuffs and the majority of offices at whitemoor would not be in possession of those. So we are unable obviously to talk about the detail of this specific attacked and it will be investigated but we know the counterterrorism offices are involved. Is it unusual . Has it happened before in the prison system . Happened before in the prison system . It happened before in the prison system . It is unusual. There was an instance in a prison in norfolk a couple of years ago whereby that attack showed all of the hallmarks ofa attack showed all of the hallmarks of a terrorist attack but yes, this is quite unusual. This prison holds a mixture of category a and category b prisoners. Can you explain what kind of prisoners we are talking about . Degree a prisoners are those that category a prisoners pose a risk to the public and national security. The most dangerous prisoners that we have within the system. So when the issue of counterterrorism being used now, counterterrorism being used now, counterterrorism investigation being used, or does it mean in terms of how staff then, and i suppose im going back to my first question, how do staff say about feeling exposed . They feel very exposed i think we need to realise the majority of prison officers undergo an eight weeks course and they are not trained with extremism and how to identify that. Surely it should be included now. There is a small training package but it is all opinion, the training is inadequate for these individuals. The reality is that officers today would be having to go about their duties as they were yesterday. They face the same risks. Not just they were yesterday. They face the same risks. Notjust at whitemoor but in every establishment in england and wales were facing these risks notjust from england and wales were facing these risks not just from terrorist but from other prisoners as well. What will change this . In our opinion, it would be increased Staffing Levels, going back to the Staffing Levels we had prior to 2012. Better training, for staff, personal protective equipment, and basically running prisons with a bit of control, like what used to happen in the past. You are from the Prison Officers Association. Thank you very much, Prison Service spokesman have said we do not tolerate assault on hard working officers we do not tolerate assault on ha rd working officers and we do not tolerate assault on hard working officers and we will push for the strongest possible punishment. The ministry ofjustice of the service recruited more than 4000 extra prison officers in the last three years and Staffing Levels are at their highest in 2012. It is 25 minutes past seven. Still to come this morning the celebrity chef tom kerridge will be here to tell us about his new series that aims to help people lose weight and get fit. A great thing about tom is he has done it before. He has lost weight before and he has put a bit back on and he knows how difficult it is. Honest enough to stand on the scales ahead of the process and say it is me as well. And so to everyone i am going through it with you. Looking forward to chatting with him. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning from bbc london. Im vanessa baffoe. Homophobic hate crimes in london have increased by 55 in five years, prompting calls for changes to the law. Latest figures show there were more than 3,000 hate crimes based on Sexual Orientation in the 12 months to october. Shaun bailey, the conservative candidate for mayor of london, is calling for new laws and tougher sentencing. But mayor sadiq khan says its too simplistic to think that creating a new offence will solve the problem. An investigations been launched after a fire broke out overnight at a Waste Recycling plant in east london. 60 firefighters attended the scene on chequers lane in dagenham just after midnight. It took almost three hours to bring the fire under control. Cctv could be installed outside some schools to catch parents and other drivers who dont follow the rules when it comes to parking. Its becoming a problem all over london and the home counties. In essex, they want to do something about it by issuing fines to those caught on camera. I see it all the time. My he only started in september and, yeah, weve noticed it. I think its an absolutely fantastic idea. I think it encourages people to use less of the car and walk a bit more. It helps our environment. A lot of the schools around harlow have got problems with parking, so its a great idea for the school. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. A good service all around on the tubes and the overground. On the trains theres disruption to southern and Thameslink Services through horsham following a signalfailure. On the roads its slow westbound on the north circular approaching henlys corner. In forest gate woodgrange road is closed between ea rlham grove and sebert road. Thats due to a police investigation. Now the weather with sara thornton. Good morning to you. Its been quite an unsettled week this week. Wet and windy at times. Today, though, much drier and quieter. Theres some good spells of sunshine around as well. Bit of a chilly start this morning, though. Youll notice a difference out there. A little bit of cloud at first but i think generally, we get some good spells of sunshine through the majority of the day. Staying dry and temperatures slipping away, despite that sunshine 7 9 celsius the top temperature. Through the night tonight, its going to be quite chilly because initially, we are dry and clear. Temperatures should lift as we move through towards tomorrow morning. But before we see some cloud moving in, we could see a touch of ground frost out towards the suburbs. Then tomorrow, a lot of dry weather for daylight hours. It will be fairly cloudy, though, and breezy as well. Thats in advance of some rain heading towards us for the evening. But a top temperature tomorrow again lifting back up into double figures. 11 or 12 celsius well above average for the time of year. Start with a bit of rain around first thing on sunday morning but then we turn dry and bright in the afternoon. Im back with the latest from the bbc london newsroom in half an hour. Plenty more on our website at the usual address, bbc. Co. Uk london. And you can also stay up to date with the latest in your area on bbc radio london. Bye for now. Is weight hello this is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Heres a summary of this mornings main stories from bbc news. The United States, canada and britain have all said that the ukrainian airliner which crashed near tehran on wednesday was shot down by iranian forces. They suggested that iran may have launched the missiles in error. Officials in tehran have dismissed the claim. Four britons were among the 176 People Killed in the crash. Lets speak now to Aviation Security expert, philip baum, whojoins us from our london newsroom. This latest detail coming through, or do you make of this . Its too bizarre a coincidence to have made a mechanicalfailure, for that aircraft to have gone down the night. Only a few hours after the iranian said conduct in their own missile strikes in iraq and were on a high state of alert about an incoming missile targeting iranian targets. U nfortu nately we incoming missile targeting iranian targets. Unfortunately we have innocent lives that have been tragic lost, as Collateral Damage for the con that is going on in the middle east at the moment. It happened to bea ukrainian east at the moment. It happened to be a Ukrainian InternationalAirlines Flight but it could have beenindeed Airlines Flight but it could have been indeed another carrier. Only a few minutes before that blighted taken off, qatar few minutes before that blighted ta ken off, Qatar Airways few minutes before that blighted taken off, Qatar Airways are taken off, turkish airlines, aeroflot to moscow. Innocent lives have been lost. This has happened before. Military errors have resulted in innocent lives being ta ken military errors have resulted in innocent lives being taken down, most famously Malaysian Airlines flight mh 17 but most famously malaysian Airlines Flight mh 17 but even ukraine itself was responsible for bringing down a civilian Airline Flight en route from tel aviv to novosibirsk back in 2001. What happens now because the black box in in iranian hands . Who ta kes black box in in iranian hands . Who takes charge of this investigation. Looking to apportion blame, or responsibility . The International Convention is the state of occurrence, the state where the incident takes place takes the lead in the investigation. The other parties that are supposed to be part of this investigation other state of registry of the aircraft. The state of manufacture of the aircraft, so the United States. It was a boeing aircraft. Indeed the other stakeholders would be those with nationalities on board. That would be the uk and obviously canada. This i feel is be the uk and obviously canada. This ifeel is going be the uk and obviously canada. This i feel is going to be be the uk and obviously canada. This ifeel is going to be mired by political expediency. Obviously the iranian isa political expediency. Obviously the iranian is a very keen to ensure nobody does give blame to them. The americans are obviously keen to see that not only is justice done but they should be part of the investigation and i think its going to be up to the International Aviation immunity through the likes of the International CivilAviation Organisation of the stakeholders like Pilots Association s to bring pressure on iran to comply with International Standard practice and involve all of those states in the investigation and they cant be political expediency here that avails there to be any different form of investigation carried out. What happens next in terms of safety or commercial aircraft in that air space . I mean, its never easy to say lets divert around iranian airspace. Its not that easy in practice because its not like the m25 driving around london where you can have traffic jams. M25 driving around london where you can have trafficjams. There is a lot of air traffic operating on the roots around that area. There is only certain amount of traffic that can go through, on anyone our route at any one time. There craft, airlines have to consider what time their Flights Airlines have to consider what time theirflights are airlines have to consider what time their flights are allowed to land. There are curfews at night about landing. Its not easy. All airlines do carry out risk assessments and decide whether they are going to operate in an area and u nfortu nately, operate in an area and unfortunately, this seems to be have been an error. Im sure they did not intend to bring down that aircraft and as intend to bring down that aircraft and as i say, this has happened before. That doesnt necessarily mean that we need a knee jerk reaction and some completely avoiding iranian airspace. Thank you very much for your thoughts on that. Holly is here with sport and we are talking in england captain with some time for injury. We know he picked up time for injury. We know he picked up that hamstring injury on new years day. At the time many thought it would be out for 6 eight weeks but it looks like its going to be three months. This is a man who just this season has scored 27 goals the club and country. And what is coming up is the euros. There is a lot of concern he wont be ready in time. A lot of fans are very worried. Despite an impressive 63 from paul stirling, the home side won the match by one wicket, to take an unbeatable 2 nil lead in the series. Theyll meet again in grenada on sunday, before a three match t20 series. Mo farah says hed have quit his relationship with Alberto Salazar earlier, had he known the coach faced a ban from athletics for doping violations. Farah left the nike oregon project headed by salazar in 2017, the same year in which his former coach was charged by the us anti doping agency. Farah has never failed a drugs test and has always denied breaking any rules. I believe in clean sports. I continue to enjoy my sports and do what i do. At the same time, had i had known the news, what salazar did, its taken four years, had i known that sooner i would have been the first one out. Thats the bit thats kind of annoying i wish id known quicker. The largest british winter youth olympic squad begin their quest for medals in switzerland later. Heres a bit of role reversal for you 15 year old coco gauff telling off her dad for swearing. He was giving her some on Court Coaching during her defeat in the auckland classic yesterday. Lets have a listen. Ive been having a think about this. Its a good tactic. If you are not performing on getting told off, just the black. You swore, so it was fine what i was doing. That is a little insight into your world. Do you know how she got on . She lost. She won the next step. Give her a bit of a boost. Is she still only for dean . Its incredible. So smart as well to be able to articulate. Some people would find it offensive. The duchess of sussex has returned to canada after a 6 week holiday. Harry and meghan announced they were to step back from the roll is a Senior Member s of the royal family. The queen, Prince Charles and Prince William have instructed staff to find a solution. Earlier a local Television News journalist spoke to us and said the media in canada is gathering. There is a lot of buzz. A lot of buzz here right now, charlie, and currently as we speak in our International Airport in victoria, which is much smaller than what you may be used to at heathrow but still a significant one, there is a lot of media already there and it is interesting, the airport, because you walk out of the plane and there is no tunnel or gateway, you get on the tarmac and you walk into the main terminal, kind of old school, and right now, along with a couple of our cameras, there are other networks there right now staked out on both sides of the terminal watching for the privatejet side. There has been onejet landed several hours ago, royal blue in colour with a white belly and were trying to get tail number on it. It could have been there, it could have been there for 15 minutes or 45 and there is a black range rover part next to it so were keeping an eye out and there is a lot of buzz. Harry and meghans announcement has drawn comparisons with edward viiis abdication in 1936 so he could marry his american mistress, Wallis Simpson. Lets speak to anna pasternak, whos Wallis Simpsons biographer and joins us from Buckingham Palace. And shola mos shogbamimu is a lawyer and womens rights activist. Ifi if i could first start with you, anna. People are thinking back in terms of history and what lessons weve learned from the past. What comparisons do you draw what happened back in 1936. There is a similarity. Turning his back and his family for the love of an american divorcee wife stop of the differences in this situation it seems to be meghan it is very much driving this move for an alternative lifestyle rose in 1936, contrary to popular opinion, Wallis Simpson tried to prevent edward abdicating and did not want him to leave the throne. If you are ever possible, to bea throne. If you are ever possible, to be a part role . I dont think it is. This is what harry and meghan are going to find. You cannot have one footin going to find. You cannot have one foot in the Royal Household and another foot in the commercial world. You are either all in all out. I think this decision which feels hotheaded and impetuous to me maybe something that harry comes to regret. I dont agree with that. After fully disagree with that. Can ijust correct on the pronunciation of my name . My apologies. I have to disagree with this. First of all, there is no comparison between Meghan Markle and Wallis Simpson. He is not abdicating the throne. There is not abdicating the throne. There is not abdicating the throne. There is no comparison. It is not making us driving this. We need to stop nonsense , us driving this. We need to stop nonsense, this stereotypical trope about this woman being the fault of whats going on. Harry and meghan made a choice as a couple as you would with your own partners. I think its really important for us to respect the choices its also important for us to recognise the roles are not public shuttles. Im sorry. That is why the decision to move is right. Its incorrect. Im sorry. No one has done it before so good on them for being the first. Sorry. No one has done it before so good on them for being the firstm doesnt mean it cannot be done. Im sorry, it is completely incorrect to say that you can be royals and leave this independent life. You can be a member of. This independent life. You can be a memberof. How do this independent life. You can be a member of. How do you know, you are not royal. I am sorry, i have studied. The study, you are not a royal. I know how the Royal Household works. It is absolutely incorrect to say that they can leave this dual life. This is 2020, its the 21st century. What i suggest is we try not to speak over one another because thats going to make it easierfor people to because thats going to make it easier for people to hear. Because thats going to make it easierfor people to hear. Can i just ask, one of the things that is apparent so far in the story from what we know, regardless of what people think about the decision and the points you make, a lot of people will correspond with, it is their lives and they can make choices. What is different . They are members of the royal family. It would appear that decision theyve taken was a surprise. Even for the queen. And that in itself what people dont really understand, they wont in the loop. Let us be fair, when it comes to the media, the media is not known to be impartial or, quite frankly, honest with anything that has got to do with anything that has got to do with the couple. I think is outrage is media manipulated. We do not know for a fact whether or not the queen is outraged, we dont know if she was taken by surprise. Just yesterday, we were told that she had given them instructions not to give out the announcement at the cenotaph which meant she was not blindsided, which meant she was not blindsided, which means she knew something was going to happen and the discussion had taken place but the important thing is this, right . We accept they are independent and they are royal and they will always be royal, they will always be royalty, harry will always be part of the royal family. He is not next in line and either are his children so if he chooses to have a different form of lifestyle, he should be able to. Meghan, do you wa nt to he should be able to. Meghan, do you want to pick up on some of those thoughts . It is important to understand that. The point is if they want to very different lifestyle, it is a form of exile that they will be going into because i completely disagree with shola that you cannot both be a royal, as you are talking about, and pursue a commercial life, so we have seen trading on royal connections to enhance herself commercially with Prince Andrew does not work, you have to have very clear delineations and the duchess of sussex and harry wanting to have a sort of progressive new royal court i think will come up at odds with the old system which you may say is archaic but actually, it has ensure the survival of the house of windsor when many other royal houses have fallen and this is all down to the queen and the queens strength is the matriarch and i think it is ridiculous of you to say that we do not know that the queen did not know about this announcement when courtiers have absolutely briefed the press and that is how that is not this media manipulation we are talking about. What is ridiculous is not to be. Not to understand that the media have been unduly harsh towards harry and meghan and what is equally ridiculous is to suggest that because there is a set system and tradition, but it is going to continue to work and continued to make the royal family relevant. It is ridiculous. Equally ridiculous is the continuation to supply this stereotypical trip to meghan or another American Woman that has come to change the establishment. It is nonsense. These are, they are a couple but we should respect. I have not done anything wrong, they have not done anything wrong, they have not brought the royal family into any form of disrepute. Prince andrew has. Crosstalk. Nobody has said that he can no longer do a, b, c. We understand he has stepped aside but the reality is he is still royalty so you can still talk about him and not, if you can still talk about it, in spite of the shame and disgrace, he has brought to the royal family. I would like to thank you, ifi family. I would like to thank you, if i made. And all of that, then we have to Pay Attention and give respect to harry and meghan. If i may, doctor shola, i need to interrupt you there. They havent. I really appreciate both of you and your thoughts and clearly very different views but we are happy to have you discussing them with our audience this morning so that is doctor shola and anna pasternak. You gotta thumbs up your pronunciation. To get there in the end. We do our best. Matt, isaw to get there in the end. We do our best. Matt, i saw you then, do you think you can bring think you can best. Matt, i saw you then, do you think you can bring some come to the proceedings . There you go. Good morning. A lovely start here in shanklin. If you are about to step out the door it is colder than it was yesterday and to show you the contrast, this was yesterday morning. I touch. Much of england and wales dry and brief touch of frost during the middle part of the night but by the end, these are the temperatures into tomorrow morning and by the end of tonight, actually, warmer than it will have been this afternoon, because we have air coming from the mid atlantic to take us into tomorrow morning. It is rushing on the forward side of these weather fronts which will sit there in the northern half of the uk through tomorrow so parts of Northern Ireland scotland Northern England rain coming and going through the day. Persistent across parts of west and south west scotland. There could be minorflooding. North of and south west scotland. There could be minor flooding. You have got all of the tricks today look at that all of them nicely. A nice little bit of mist. Weve been reviewing the christmas retail winners and losers this week, and we now have details of the shop chain that clearly did the best. Sean has the details for us. If you have done all right. We are looking at lidl this morning. When you earlier in the week they had been doing well and they are saying total sales were up 11 for them in december, effectively. That includes new Stores Opening so it can be difficult to compare to the likes of morrisons and tesco tell how existing stores that were opened a year ago i getting on but lidl, wyan has been a big driver for them over the week, they said it was one thing that has gone well. Lidl has done all right but not so well for superdry, talking athleisure this morning, in that market, superdry have put out a profit warning, saying that they have found a long, long list of struggles, actually. Unprecedented levels of promotional activity. In the market, loads of people around on black friday and afternoon and big sales and they we re afternoon and big sales and they were not able to compete and subdued demand after christmas. They probably had a load of stuff they wanted to sell and we were not interested in spending. Even in the sales . Interested in spending. Even in the sales . Even in the sales. And where they got it right, better selling products, they had shortages, so an indication of the turnaround that has been attempted superdry now, not working for them yet but they are hoping it works further down the line. Interesting talking superdry husserl trainers and hoodies, line. Interesting talking superdry husserltrainers and hoodies, in line. Interesting talking superdry husserl trainers and hoodies, in the athleisure market we have been talking about, jd sports having given usa talking about, jd sports having given us a lot of detail but they say they are doing pretty well and sails up compared to last year and the world of athleisure we know, those figures we were talking about this morning, spending 20 more than we we re this morning, spending 20 more than we were five years ago, on average, a little bit more than £90 for a pairof trainers. We a little bit more than £90 for a pair of trainers. We have been hearing from jayne over the morning talking about shoppers and businesses about how much they were spending, some eye watering figures, and it generates debate about whether it is right or not. |j and it generates debate about whether it is right or not. I am guessing that if you buy trainers routinely that £90 average figure will not sound that much but. M isa will not sound that much but. M is a lot of money what did you say it was for a pair of shoes . Yes. People are truck starting to view trainers as good quality, wearing them out for work and nice occasions. We were out talking to quite a few people and there was one chap who paid 800 and another one 8000 and it genuinely is unusual but i guess 800 is. Extreme but not that unusual . In the resale market, limited edition, we are seeing people for limited edition, legging it into the store and then reselling them. I feel sorry forjayne. It into the store and then reselling them. But a top temperature tomorrow again lifting back up into double figures 11 or 12 celsius well above average for the time of year. Start with a bit of rain around first thing on sunday morning but then we turn dry and bright in the afternoon. Im back with the latest from the bbc london newsroom in half an hour. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Our headlines today the uk, canada and the United States say there is evidence that an Iranian Missile shot down a passenger jet, killing 176 people. I will it is drier and sunnier but a little bitjelly. I will have the details on that and that and the weekend forecast. Good morning. Its friday, 10th january. Our top story the United States, canada and britain have all said that the ukrainian airliner which crashed near tehran on wednesday was shot down by iranian forces. They suggested that iran may have launched the missiles in error. Officials in tehran have dismissed the claim. Four britons were among the 176 People Killed in the crash. Nada tawfik reports from toronto. Us media say these images appear to show the moment the ukrainian airliner was hit by an Iranian Missile, minutes after take off. The Iranian Regime must open up to the international community, including access to the crash site, so we can get the truth as quickly as possible to give the families of the victims an understanding of what happened to their loved ones. Lets speak now to our diplomatic correspondent, caroline hawley, whojoins us from beirut. Caroline, whats the reaction been there . What do you make of these latest developments . What we know is happening at the moment is that iranians state television is showing pictures of the black boxes but it is saying any suggestion that it was a surface to air missile of its own that took down that plane is a lie, that took down that plane is a lie, that this rubs salt into the wounds of the relatives of the 176 people who died, many of whom were iranian. We wait to see what kind of co operation in iran will offer to the outside world and to the countries who have lost people in that terrible air crash. The iranians say they will be cooperating, they want a proper investigation. They have interestingly said that they will allow an american official from the National Transportation safety board to ta ke National Transportation safety board to take part. The question is whether because of sanctions that have been imposed on iran that were tightened after albanian retaliation, the question is whether america will be able to participate in any investigation iranian retaliation. I am interested in your ta ke retaliation. I am interested in your take on how leaders of various countries are reacting. We understand Boris Johnson had countries are reacting. We understand borisjohnson had a conversation yesterday. Justin trudeau has come out because there we re trudeau has come out because there were around 70 canadians on that flight. Were around 70 canadians on that flight. And Donald Trumps reaction. What are you seeing in terms of the conversations that are happening. Everyone collectively in that region and around the world breathed a little sigh of relief when it seemed that the us and iran had stepped back from the brink. This plane crashes an added complication and we do not know what impact it is going to have on these very high tensions between the us and iran and between the west and iran so we wait to see how things play out but the middle eastis how things play out but the middle east is a tender box and there are a lot of people playing with matches at the moment. Definitely the focus of diplomats is to try to de escalate as much as they can because the stakes are very high. Thank you. When this announcement was made the suggestion was that many members of the royal family including the queen we re the royal family including the queen were unaware that it was about to happen and the question is what will happen and the question is what will happen next . You get a bit of a sense of a change of mood at the palace this morning. It is fair to say they were blindsided by the announcement made by harry and meghan and we were talking about a sense of hurt amongst senior royal officials and the royals themselves because they did not know this was coming. 24 hours alone you get a sense that the palace is rolling up its sleeves and saying we need to find some workable solution to this and they are talking about coming up with some concrete proposals in a matter of days rather than weeks. We are talking about the royal family so we have the caveat that at times they have been resistant to change in the past. Initially at least any discussions are going to take place here without the presence of meghan because she has flown back to canada having spent just three because she has flown back to canada having spentjust three days in the uk. She was last seen here on tuesday when she attended an event at the high commission. She went there to thank the canadian people for their warmth and generosity they had shown them during their six week christmas break and we can be done to their when the couple talk about wanting a new start it looks like canada will be the choice because clearly meghan is feeling at home there. Five prison staff have been injured after they were allegedly stabbed and slashed by two inmates wearing fake suicide belts. One of the alleged attackers at whitemoor prison in cambridgeshire had been originallyjailed for planning to behead a soldier. Counter terrorism officers are investigating. Earlier, Mick Pimblett from the Prison Officers Association said his members need more training and support. They feel very exposed. I think what youve got to realises the majority of prison officers undergo an eight week training course. They are not trained in extremism and how to deal with extremism and how to identify extremism. Its notjust in whitemoor but in every establishment in england and wales were facing these risks, not just from terrorists but from other prisoners as well. After three years of deadlock, the main Political Parties in Northern Ireland are considering a draft deal to restore power sharing at stormont potentially by the end of the day. The british and irish governments put forward the proposal last night, describing it as a fair compromise which contained something for everyone. Our ireland correspondent, chris page, is at stormont for us now. Chris, what are the chances of this deal being accepted . For yea rs for years we for yea rs we have for years we have been waiting for some sort of deal to be agreed by all parties. What is the likelihood this is going to be signed off . All parties. What is the likelihood this is going to be signed offlm is possible that the de beginning will be the day that power sharing, devolved government, is restored in Northern Ireland after three years. Last night the British Government made quite a bold move. There was a news co nfe re nce made quite a bold move. There was a News Conference quite late and they presented a draft deal, a document called new decade, new approach, covering reform of the Health Service, and reform of the rules by which the Stormont Assembly will operate, on the most contentious issue of the Irish Language they are proposing two commissioners, one to protect and promote the Irish Language and another one to do something similarfor language and another one to do something similar for cultural elements which will be more associated with british identity. The dup, one of two parties that needs to be on board, are making pretty positive noises so far. Arlene foster saying there is a basis to restore devolution. Sinn fein, who also need to buy into the deal, are being more coy and holding a senior Party Meeting around lunchtime today in belfast to decide whether or not to sign up. If they do the british and irish governments hope the Stormont Assembly will be recalled by the end of today and ministers will be put back in place. A lot will be writing on the sinn fein meeting this afternoon. That should give us some indication at least. Australia is bracing itself for another day of bushfires with high temperatures and strong winds forecast. More than 100 bushfires are still burning in the south of the country. Authorities are urging people in parts of the state of victoria to leave their homes or risk being trapped. Nine years ago today, a young teacher called Michaela Mcareavey was murdered while on her dream honeymoon in mauritius. Nobody has ever been convicted for her killing. Its led to a long fight forjustice for michaelas widower and her brother. Well speak to them both in a moment. First lets remind ourselves of the case. It was meant to be the honeymoon of a lifetime on a tropical island. Now its a murder investigation. Less than two weeks after getting married, Michaela Mcareavey was murdered. She was killed on honeymoon on the Holiday Island of mauritius. Michaela mcareavey was well known on both sides of the irish border. She was the daughter of one of irelands most famous sporting figures, mickey harte. Michaela was a lovely girl. She was a wonderful daughter, a brilliant sister for these boys here. Two Hotel Workers were later charged with murder and today they were found not guilty. The police in mauritius arrested her husband john at the start of the murder investigation. But they quickly realised he had nothing to do with the killing. For him, the search forjustice and the pain of losing his wife goes on. Michaelas widowerjohn mcareavey and her brother mark harte join us now. It cannot be easy for you sitting here talking to us and watching that. What are you feeling today . Here talking to us and watching that. What are you feeling today7m is nine years today, the anniversary of michaelas death, so obviously a difficult day but over the past number of years our focus has been set on making sure we can get justice for michaela and that has been our overriding feeling as opposed to personal emotional feelings. We have had to travel a long road and we have grieved and we feel that the least michaela deserves is to getjustice in this case. What have you been doing in terms of pressurising the authorities in mauritius to show that they are doing something to find the killers . We have our own legal team and we have been advised to give the authorities space. After the murder initially the investigation happened and then with the trial and the acquittal we were told subsequently that the best thing to do was to allow the narration authorities space to do their investigation so we get that, albeit for a short period of time, but as time went on we realise that this campaign needed more momentum and as time went on to less and less we had from the authorities our frustrations grew so we decided in 2017 to head over to mauritius again and to reignite some energy into the case and raise awareness and we offered a reward for any information that would go toward bringing the killer to justice. What do you think is the stumbling block . Mauritius is known as a honeymoon destination, paradise. Tourism is its basic biggest generator of income so this is not good press. Why are the authorities not showing that it is safe . Authorities not showing that it is safe . That is a good question and we would love an answer to that because we have been met with stumbling block after stumbling block and our frustrations have grown and we believe this case will be solved in mauritius so we are imploring the authorities to redouble their effo rts authorities to redouble their efforts because we were promised in no Uncertain Terms that they would stay in regular contact with us on a monthly basis and update us with any development no matter how small or large and initially that was the case but sadly that has dried up, so what we are here to do on the ninth anniversary is to employ people of influence, whether that is the highest level in the British Government, the irish government, at ambassadorial level, please re engage with us, and today of all great days there seems to be a breakthrough in the political deadlock back home and maybe we can use some of that positive Political Energy to reignite this case because ultimately eager young women got married, went on honeymoon with the love of her life and 11 days later she was murdered in her hotel room. That is not good enough. John, for you, ican that is not good enough. John, for you, i can only imagine that you must go through in your own head over and over again the sequence of events over and over again the sequence of eve nts o n over and over again the sequence of events on the day of her death, and as you are imploring the authorities to reinvestigate you must think that through however painful that is many times. Yes, well, that is a fact of my life, and i suppose i have become reasonably comfortable with living with something so uncomfortable. You have to be able to process these things in order to live and to go about and have a normal life, and i suppose something that is so frustrating is the fact that crimes get connected all over the world but we have been told many times that a perfect crime scene is often enough will tell them, it is a closed environment with plenty of opportunity to gather evidence, and the evidence that was gathered in this case has been extraordinarily strong and we have recorded a podcast and we talked diligently about all this evidence and for us to be sitting here nine years today with no one held responsible for the killing of michaela is hugely frustrating and it needs to change. I say this cautiously, but we spoke to you in advance about this, but the scene they were faced with, that the scene they were faced with, that the investigators had, you were there as well. You know what they saw. Yes. We know. Whats more, there were other witnesses, and i witness that saw two men leaving the wren witness that saw two men leaving the wren that michaela was killed then. There was a confession given in front of a lawyer to the police, but yet all of this here was ignored at the trial and that is a big question for the narrationjudicial the trial and that is a big question for the narration judicial system, why nine members of the jury unanimously acquitted these two men who were responsible for killing michaela on the face of so much strong evidence, and that is something, as mark has alluded to, that they can no longer ignore these questions, and that is why we are imploring members of the British Government, and michaela was a citizen in Northern Ireland, and our own government in the south of ireland, to ask these questions on our behalf because the authorities just want us to go away and that has been made clear by their lack of communication and sheer disregard for the respect of our families, so they have to answer these questions. If not from us, then from government officials. It is important to say we are notan officials. It is important to say we are not an eye for an eye type people. If we thought the wrong people. If we thought the wrong people were being accused that does not sit well with us at all but we are absolutely convinced by the guilt of the two parties involved and we would ask the viewers to check out the podcast and inform yourself about it, listen to the evidence. We quote directly from the judges summation and eyewitness accou nts judges summation and eyewitness accounts and somebody somewhere in your viewership will hopefully take the lead on the sand energise this case again and ultimately we want to bring michaela back and we cannot do that but the next best thing we can do is getjustice. That but the next best thing we can do is get justice. And that but the next best thing we can do is getjustice. And k. John and marks podcast is called murder in mauritius. Heres matt with a look at this mornings weather. Starting with clear skies in aberdeen ahead of a beautiful sunrise. It is much colder. Temperatures below freezing across parts of scotland yesterday morning. 11 or 12 degrees in the south. Today it is cooler than it was this time yesterday so a chillier start. Across england and wales you will be noticing it more than anyone else. This is the cloud that brought the rain yesterday and this will bring cloud and rain later today and in between we have clearer skies and a much brighter start. One or two showers clearing away. The sunshine turning hazy across the north and the west. Later into Northern Ireland and western scotland we will see gales and also some heavy bursts of rain. Temperatures five to 10 degrees, lower than yesterday, of rain. Temperatures five to 10 degrees, lowerthan yesterday, but still above where they should be for the time of year for some. Rain throughout the night coming and going and eventually into parts of Northern England. Further south most places will stay dry with the chance ofa places will stay dry with the chance of a frost during the middle part of the night and by the end temperatures to start tomorrow morning higher than this afternoon because we will have seen this rush of warmerair because we will have seen this rush of warmer air pollution from the mid atlantic. Of warmer air pollution from the mid atla ntic. These weather fronts will be wriggling around across parts of scotland and Northern Ireland so rain at times, most persistent in south west scotland and Northern Ireland, and pushing into parts of north wales and Northern England. That allows things to brighten up across the northern half of the country later. I crossed the border much windier day with gusts of 50 or 60 miles per other but the wind will be mild and turning colder in the north later. The fresher weather will be pushing southwards as we go through the night and into sunday morning. Patchy rain and drizzle in east anglia and the south east holding onto temperatures in double figures but a chillier start further north but a chillier start further north but generally speaking brighter. Showers most frequent in the north and west, wintry Higher Ground. Temperatures for sunday down on saturdays values, similar to this afternoon. As we go into next week, above average temperatures return and as well as some rain it is going to be pretty windy as well. It could get quite stormy at times next week. Can we have sound effects for the wolf moon next time . Of course theyre remnants of the industrial revolution, and still dominate town skylines, many mills remain derelict and empty. In the first survey of its kind, Historic England has found almost 600 of the buildings could be prime candidates to convert into space for new homes and businesses. But as our correspondent, Coletta Smith, has been finding out, its no easy task. With thousands of workers heading in for shifts, this old textile mill was the beating heart of wigan for nearly 100 years. But now, pagefield mill is just a shell, totally derelict. Its only vandals and pigeons within these walls now. Its been empty since 2006. The council would love that to change, but they know it needs to happen quick. We need to keep working to get a viable scheme that brings as much of the Building Back into use as it possibly can. I think we are otherwise in danger of actually getting to a Tipping Point where that becomes incredibly difficult. Historic england say, if we do not act now, within the next few years, hundreds of mills could be lost forever. Its the skyline that we all know and are aware of and it is what built the towns and cities that we all use and live in, so the buildings and the chimneys are really critical to our heritage in the north west and yorkshire. So, here weve the access ways into each of the apartments. There are some developers willing to take that risk, stump up the money and wait longer for the work to be done. You have got the old beams and youve got exposed brickwork and exposed flooring and all of these Different Things that you can really make the most of and bring out. These flats sell in Central Manchester, but it would not work in a little town, would it . In some of those other towns, i think the Public Sector does need to get involved. Without that, theyre just some at the moment, anyway, some of those buildings are just going to get worse and worse and worse. If you can save those buildings and regenerate them, that is what then attracts people to want to live in those towns. And thats exactly what they have done here in halifax. 5,000 staff used to work here in dean cough mill as crossleys carpets was once upon a time the biggest carpet maker in the world. Plenty of people thought he was mad butjeremy saw a way to resurrect it. I think a good dose of naivety and optimism is undoubtedly called for. It has been a gradual process, restoring one little section at a time. This beauty has taken more than 30 years to reach this point. The town has been moulded and influenced by that business and all that has occurred here and all of the thousands of people that have worked on this site. And i think in that way, i think people, rightly, feel it is their place, it is their environment. And lots of the 150 businesses based here do see it as their own. These buildings that we are in now were built in 1841. I dont think they have been occupied for 50 years, other than by pigeons. So to have the opportunity to create something really amazing for our people but also to bring a Building Back to life, it was, like, the nicest opportunity you could have. Just one pearl in a necklace strung across the north of england, forming the original northern powerhouse. Itll take more of this level of cash and this kind of love to bring more mills to life. Coletta smith, bbc news. We were talking about wet and windy weather but when you look outside it is like a beautiful tranquil morning. It is a shame to be stuck in here. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning. Compared to yesterday, todays weather is going to be a bit more straightforward. For most of us it is dry and it is going to be bright, there is lots of sunshine around this morning. We will see a bit of cloud, though, moving its way into scotland, Northern Ireland and with that rain eventually pushing here that could turn heavy and they will also be some strengthening winds with gales later this afternoon. Temperatures around about 6 9dc, feeling a bit chillier compared to yesterday across the southeast. Through tonight, this area of rain will continue to spread in. It will be very heavy across the west and south west of scotland. It doesnt really move very far as we go into saturday morning, staying drier towards the south east. Temperatures, though, will start to rise overnight, so about 8 11 or 12 degrees. Double figures in scotland and Northern Ireland, and thats because the air is going to come back in from the south west. Temperatures this week have been up and down, and on saturday we will see them coming back up again. On saturday, we have this weather system here, that will continue to bring outbreaks of rain in scotland, Northern Ireland, eventually it will push into north west england and north west wales. But there could be as much as 100 millimetres of rain in the south west of scotland by the end of saturday, so the potential for some flooding. Further south and east it is going to stay dry, some cloud, and also really quite windy widely across the uk, but in particular north east england, south east scotland and now the irish sea coast, gusts of 60, 70 mph, and as i mentioned, mild, temperatures for all of us on saturday into double figures. But as we go through into sunday, that weather system will continue to move to the south east. But you will notice the colder air comes in behind it, so chilly day on sunday and that could well bring some wintry showers over the Higher Ground of scotland. Rain clears from the south east, there will be some sunny spells and a few showers, particularly during the morning. But those temperatures will be coming down, so around about 6 9d on sunday afternoon. Thats all from me. Bye bye. Hello. This is worklife from bbc news, with victoria fritz and tim willcox.
