And we are live in london, Trafalgar Square, just hours away from the worlds biggest new years day parade. 80,000 participants from 20 Different Countries, and here are just some of them having a warmup. Good morning. Happy new year. Today will be fairly grey and cloudy. The brighter skies and north east england and north east scotland. I will be back with more later. Good morning. Its wednesday the 1st of january, 2020. Happy new year our top story hope and reconciliation are the main themes in a number of todays new year messages. Borisjohnson has said that 2020 can allow the country to turn the page on the division and uncertainty of recent years. Hes pledged to represent all voters and said that the new year means the start of a new chapter. And the archbishop of canterbury has called for the uk to start healing divisions as our religion editor Martin Bashir reports. It isa it is a challenging day, weatherwise. Although this is not his usual habit, the life boat rescue station in dover is within the diocese of canterbury. An archbishopjustin the diocese of canterbury. An archbishop justin welby the diocese of canterbury. An Archbishopjustin Welby is coming here to deliver his new years message. What we need to do, run ahead of that red one and then turn to starboard. 0k. Ahead of that red one and then turn to starboard. Ok. That is it. You are fine. Is staffed year round by 70 volunteers. It is notjust a group of people working together. It isa group of people working together. It is a family. The seagoing crew includes a student, a train driver, a chef, an electrician. The youngest is 17 and the oldest is 62. My wife made me a lovely Christmas Morning breakfast, and just as the knife was going into it, the pagerwent breakfast, and just as the knife was going into it, the pager went off again and we were back out to the channel. Justin said that commitment to service is the Practical Application of the most famous arable in the bible. When we hear someone arable in the bible. When we hear someone described as a good samaritan, we think about that person taking the time to help. But it isa person taking the time to help. But it is a story told byjesus about someone it is a story told byjesus about someone taking the risk of reaching out to another who was very different to them. Dover also happens to be the closest place in britain to Continental Europe and the archbishop concluded his message by inviting all of us to take up the challenge of healing divisions between a individuals and communities. Lets go for a heroic new years resolution. Lets resolve to reconnect, to reach out to just one person we dont know, or from whom we have drifted apart. Make that connection. Lets begin cementing our unity one brick at a time. Martin bashir, bbc news, dover. There have been more deaths in australia as bushfires continue to rage across the south east of the country. Its feared that hundreds more homes have been destroyed. Emergency workers are struggling to reach some of those trapped. From sydney, phil mercer reports. These are extraordinary times in australia. The bushfires have brought terror into the lives of ordinary people. They are devastating and deadly. More lives have been lost. Help is yet to reach some residents who have reportedly suffered burns. It was genuinely terrifying. It was the day never happened yesterday. There was no dawn, it was red and dark and stormy smokey the whole day and we didnt know what was going to happen. It was very scary. The Authorities Say it has been too dangerous to send in rescue teams by roads or by air. We have a very real challenge at the moment with a couple of isolated communities that we have got reports of injuries and burn injuries to members of the public. We havent been able to get access via roads or via aircraft, it has been too dangerous and we simply cant access, nor can the people in these areas get out. Conditions on new years day have eased, but the danger remains. Dozens of fires still burn out of control and the crisis shows no sign of ending. At the very least, weather conditions on saturday will be as bad as what they were yesterday and that is why all of our people on the ground, thousands of them are taking advantage of the milder conditions to make us as well prepared as possible for saturday when any of these fire fronts coming again exacerbate and cause damage. Bushfires have always been part of the australian story. But Officials Say this crisis is unprecedented. Some of the blazes are so intense that efforts by firefighters to put them out will fail. What australia needsis them out will fail. What australia needs is fire drenching rain, but no significant falls are expected for at least another month. Phil mercer, bbc news, sydney. The mother of the british teenager found guilty of lying about being raped in cyprus has warned parents in the uk that the Holiday Resort of ayia napa is unsafe. In an interview with the bbcs today programme, she also said she was supporting a call for tourists to boycott the island. Jon donnison reports. It is two days since the young british woman walked out of a Cypriot Court having been found guilty of falsely claiming she was raped by 12 men. Her supporters say both the Police Investigation and the Court Process were flawed and her lawyers are planning to appeal. Now, the 19 year old mother has told the bbc of the impact the case has had on her daughters mental health. The words are read by an actor to protect both of their identities. She is suffering from ptsd. She spends a lot of time with hypersomnia at the moment. That means she is sleeping an awful lot of the day. She is less 18, 20 hours of the day. She is less 18, 20 hours of the day. She is also not withdrawn, which is very sad for me to see, and she also experiences hallucinations and she needs to get back to the uk to get that treated. That is my absolute primary focus. These are young israeli tourists who originally faced accusations that they had raped the young woman. They we re they had raped the young woman. They were and allowed to fly home after she retracted the allegation. But she retracted the allegation. But she said she only did that because she said she only did that because she was put under huge pressure by Police Questioning when she was vulnerable. Now her mother is supporting a call for tourists to boycott cyprus. This is not an isolated incident. The place is not safe. It is absolutely not safe. If you go and report something that has happened to you, you are either laughed at as far as i can tell, or in the worst case, Something Like what has happened to my daughter may happen. The Foreign Office has called the teenagers case deeply disturbing and says it will be speaking to the authorities in cyprus. The cypriot government says it has full confidence in its Justice System and courts. Jon donnison, bbc news. The us has announced the immediate deployment of hundreds more troops to the middle east in response to an attack on the American Embassy in iraq. Protesters set fire to a guard post and scaled one of the walls of the fortified compound in baghdad. The demonstrators were supporters of an iranian backed Militia Group that lost 25 members on sunday during a us air strike. Firework displays across the uk have welcomed in the new year. In london, tens of thousands of people lined the river thames as per usual for a show that mixed fireworks with music and looked ahead to the citys role in hosting some of the matches at this summers euro 2020 tournament. Meanwhile, the streets of edinburgh echoed with Auld Lang Syne as people from all over the world enjoyed the traditional hogmanay street party. Thousands of others gathered in stonehaven for the annual fireballs ceremony. The duke and duchess of sussex have released a new photograph of their son archie in a new years message posted on instagram. The picture of archie, whos now seven months old, came at the end of a compilation summarising his parents year. Here he is being held by his dad with mum meghan likely to be behind the camera. We arejust guessing we are just guessing that, which is probably a safe assumption. Happy new year to you all this morning. Take a look at these extraordinary pictures from australia. The video was taken by firefighters as their truck became engulfed in flames in new south wales. Despite being surrounded by fire on all sides, the crew all made it out alive and have been praised for their bravery. Lets speak now to team leader david inskip, who was in another fire truck travelling through the burning woodland. Thank you so much forjoining us this morning. Happy new year to you as well. Tell us what that experience was like for you and for the guys we have seen their travelling in the other truck. The guys we have seen their travelling in the other truckm was terrifying. I have never seen fire behaving in such a way before. It was so quick, it came upon us and the ferocity of how it burned towards us was terrifying. Tell us how they found themselves in that situation. Say it sort of came upon them so quickly. How fast did that fire and off the fire engine . We had a road about a kilometre down to some houses where some people were that we were going down to protect and we had only driven a couple of hundred metres when we started to getan hundred metres when we started to get an ember attack about five or ten seconds later and we could see the fire fronts coming through, five seconds after that the fire had reached the road in front of us and at that point we realised we were not going to get through that way so all four trucks and myself in a car with a 3 point turn to go out the way we came. By the time we had done that 3 point turn and were facing the other way, the fire had already reached the road, we attempted to drive out, myself in the car and two of the trucks managed to drive out back to safety, but two trucks were damaged from the heat and they were stuck in the road and that is where the footage that you are seeing has come from. They had no alternative but to shelter in the truck until the fire front had passed. And then once outside had cooled a bit, they managed to get out and walk out. Once outside had cooled a bit, they managed to get out and walk outm is amazing, and it reminds us of how quickly the fire can move at times. We saw in the video footage there, what actions do you have to take in that situation . They were covering the windows and trying to stay safe inside . That is right. We had bla nkets inside . That is right. We had bla n kets to inside . That is right. We had blankets to stop the radiant heat affecting them coming in through the window, they also put on the personal attractive equipment, once i got out of the truck, they managed to get some air sets and put them on and the main thing was sheltering for the initial blast of heat as the fire fronts came through it. It might have only lasted 30 seconds but it is just intense heat, melting the outside of the truck. Both trucks were damaged from the heat but one of them actually caught alight and has now been destroyed. The other one it can probably be fixed up, it has burnt all over it. We have been speaking to a number of people who have been sheltering in various places over the last few days. Give us an idea of some of the challenges you have faced as mamas of the emergency services. There is just so much happening all over the state, these fires are burning in the north and the south so the resources a re the north and the south so the resources are stretched quite thin. The fire is moving so fast and in ways that we are not used to, just from the drought going so long, fuel is so dry and we are getting these very hot continuous days and it has not rained in a long time. Itjust creates the perfect storm of threats and just stretching resources thin to so many different areas and so many communities under threat. To so many different areas and so many communities under threatm to so many different areas and so many communities under threat. It is something that we see annually in australia. Is this the worst conditions you have seen in your time in the service . Certainly the worst i have ever seen in my 20 yea rs or worst i have ever seen in my 20 years or so, by far. I worst i have ever seen in my 20 years orso, by far. I have worst i have ever seen in my 20 years or so, by far. I have never seen anything like it. It has been burning, fires started 115 days ago, we have had resources fighting fires in different parts of the state and that doesnt thing to be any rain forecast for the moment so it will probably go for a little while yet. We were speaking to a gentleman who was sheltering on the beach yesterday with 4000 people from the town, watching buildings burning in the background, and he was talking about even in those horrible circumstances, the Incredible Community spirit. Is it something you have witnessed in the last few days . Thankfully we were the only ones in that street. The community. I didnt get to speak to too many members of the community, we had to finish for the day on that, but i have seen that before and it is great that people can get together as a community and help each other out. It can be terrifying, even sheltering when you are someway safe, when the fire front came through, at midnight, there was no light for about two or three hours where i was. It can just be terrifying, even if you are safe. People really do need to look after each other and to one another. That is great. David, really good to talk to you. Thank you very much and i hope you have a fantastic 2020. Thank you for speaking to us this morning. That is david who is one of the firefighters in australia have been incredibly busy over the last few days. That is something we will keep an eye on for you this morning. We will also keep an eye on the new year weather. Happy new year, carol. Good morning. Hgppy happy new year a touch of frost here and there, even in parts of the south east. Today, valley grey. Did you have a Party Last Night or early to bed . It was early to bed but the fireworks started at seven oclock and then at midnight so not much sleep involved. The inaugral tournament takes place across three cities. As weve been hearing daily, fires have devastated parts of australia, fuelled by record high temperatures and severe drought the tournament takes place in three cities. We just made the brave wa firefighters who have been helping fight these terrible fires here in this country.
