Youre watching beyond 100 days. The day after the New Hampshire primary the democrats have two front runners Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg. But wait. If only it were that simple. Amy klobuchar had a good night too and Mike Bloomberg the third man is still waiting in the wings. The candidates now head south to more diverse states where the field could well scramble again before democrats finally choose a candidate to take on trump. The white house meanwhile is scrambling american justice the department ofjustice makes a very rare intervention to reduce the sentencing of a trump ally. Also on the programme. The first case of coronavirus has been confirmed here in london. The authorities in london say they have confirmed their first case of the coronavirus, the carrier was a Chinese National who tested positive. New laws to deal with harmful content online the British Government is setting out radical new plans to put the onus on social media firms. Say cheese. One of the winning entrys in this year wildlife photographer of the year competition, was this photo of two mice battling it out for the crumbs. Well get the latest on the primaries in a second well first breaking news in london. The first case of coronavirus has been confirmed today. According to a government source. The victim is believed to be a Chinese National who was diagnosed this afternoon. The authorities are seeking to track down anyone the woman might have been in contact with while in the uk. Our Health Editor hugh pym is here. What more can you add to that . Well,
various sources have confirmed various sources have confirmed various bits of this but there is a lot of confidentiality around patient detail but we understand that she flew in from china and arrived at Londons Heathrow airport come at that stage whether showing any symptoms, would have been given information on arrival for people off of the flights, if they did to develop symptoms, the call for an helpline at nhs 111, she went on her way we think she arrived last week ora way we think she arrived last week or a matter of days ago. Then develop symptoms, called the helpline, didnt go into a credit hospital, that all of the right things, what the Public Health authorities have been advising people come and she didnt and we understand she will be treated at st. Thomas this hospital in westminster. One of the hospitals in the uk with the specialist in Infectious Diseases treatment capability. We have this case, we had a Health Centre closed out in
brighton, a prison locked down in oxfordshire, schools in sussex told to stay at home today, what do you think we are in terms of the spread of coronavirus in the uk . Weve had a lot of tests in the uk as you have had in many other countries including europe. Where you get people who have come back from certain countries in asia, they show symptoms and tested negative, some more than m00 test in the uk which have proved to be negative. The only cases so have proved to be negative. The only cases so far in the uk, to Chinese Nationals at a hospital in newcastle a few weeks ago, one man who came back from singapore to europe and it affected 11 others, and then at this case today. And actually, one source put it to me this was fairly straightforward, Contact Tracing is the key thing for sub Public Health officials are very good at doing that. They should be easy to do and some others. We had a Health Official in this week who said the uk is really good at this disease
control. People come here to learn how the uk does it. But you have a case like this, i dont want to spread panic, but you sort of understand how futile it might be if you have two or three of these and that will stretch the resources of the authorities were trying to do that contact control. While Public Health england, who have been handling things on behalf of the whole uk medical set up, they have been saying just walking into a building or somebody elses at some distance who has the virus doesnt mean you will get infected. You need to be two metres away or less for a period. What they have done is trace contact immediately, they know the patient is positive, highly trained to do that, they are very good at doing that. Suddenly in the case of the man who came over from singapore, they knew very quickly who he has spent time with and bent at alpine ski resort come he turned out that some of those who positive but they got to the very quickly and think that will be the case again
here. What this woman who has arrived in london. She probably didnt see very many people. It is not just travelling didnt see very many people. It is notjust travelling on a train. They are very insistent that when i put you at risk. It is the sustained contact they think they can quickly get to the contact, obviously changes at the whole thing turns into some sort of Global Pandemic with thousands of people getting infected and coming into the uk and other countries. Really useful update. Thank you. Really interesting there. The who just saying we dont know and they dont know whether we are at the beginning of the middle of the end of this into soon really although there has been some better news in there has been some better news in the last few days but too soon the who is saying now to say whether this has in fact stabilise or not. Lets get the latest on american politics. New hampshire has done itsjob. There are fewer democrats running to be president today after three dropped out of the race, following a poor showing in yesterdays primary. But beyond that we really still cant tell you who
the candidate is going to be. Its a tussle between the more liberal and more moderate wings of the party. Heres what we do know. Bernie sanders won the primary. Pete buttigieg came a close second with Amy Klobuchar in third place. It was a bad night for Elizabeth Warren and a terrible night forjoe biden. But now the race really changes. It moves from mainly white states to more diverse states and that could mean quite different results. But Bernie Sanders, the goal remains the same. Let me say tonight that this victory here is the beginning of the in donald trump cheering. The next bolt will be on saturday but as we saw the joe the next bolt will be on saturday but as we saw thejoe biden already moving guide to South Carolina. A crucial state if he will get traction. The former Vice President as you can see top of the polls among black voters. It is expected they will cast up to two thirds of
all ballots in South Carolina. Could be good news because mr biden has seen his National Poll numbers drop dramatically since entering iowa as the favourite. His votes h is votes have his votes have the client amongst American Voters who won a winner. Chris buckler has this report for us. Chris buckler has this report for us. That has declined. We dont have that report, im sorry. Were joined now by mayan schechter a reporter at South Carolinas the state newspaper. Quite a turnout. Joe biden did ima stay for the party. He had the ground running in South Carolina which tells you where his focus is. Did not stay. Which tells you where his focus is. Did not stay. Right. He came back to South Carolina just a few hours before even the primary results in New Hampshire trickling in for a large party here in the capital city of columbia. Former Vice President
joe biden within even expected to be in South Carolina last night was not one of his top surrogates congressman Cedric Richmond was expected to host that. But then i did and his wife, doctorjill biden, flew in. Biden is clearly hoping to spark some momentum in South Carolina. This is obviously a state that hes incredibly familiar with. He had a lot of support here. It remains to be seen what he will be doing on the ground heading into the primaries, but his campaign told reporters on a media call today that they are going to be aggressive in going to be rolling out more surrogates and bringing back the bus tour. If we see africanamerican support forjoe biden eroding, do we know where they are now placing their support . Who is benny benefiting from that the client coachella it is still very difficult to tell exactly where biden parchment black supporters. We
really havent seen that many polls here. Injust a really havent seen that many polls here. In just a few short weeks heading into the primaries. Certainly, senator Bernie Sanders has enjoyed support from the African American community, particularly Younger Voters who attend neighbourhood hbcus, and tom stier, he has been able to take advantage of the ground game here in South Carolina over the past few months while some of the other candidates including joe biden have been duking it out and iowa and New Hampshire. We have seen a fox news poll harm stier poll numbers rise and a lot of that contributed to his widespread name id in the state, he has been able to spend millions of dollars on television, digital, print, ads, so certainly those are the two camps we have seen some of the two camps we have seen some of the support leak into. Do you think that South Carolina is the last stand forjoe biden if he doesnt come out top there is an over for
his campaign . It really depends who you ask. His campaign and his surrogates on the ground here certainly feel like even if his poll numbers dont do seriously well, that will still push him over the top when he had the two super tuesday states. But it remains to be seen. Tuesday states. But it remains to be seen. It is very difficult to tell but i dont think anybody is necessarily honest own supporters are not discounting what he can do in the state right now. Really useful update on that. Thank you for that. That is the picture in South Carolina. Lets turn to democratic stategist mary anne marsh whos in manchester, New Hampshire. She stayed around for the party. She can tell us a little bit about what went on last night. We havent really talked about Amy Klobuchar, who had a good performance. Yes. She was the big surprise no question coming out of the New Hampshire primary because not only finishing third, but look at the real estate she had to come up from a week
before and i will when she was way down. So she made the most of her debate performance last night my lot of New Hampshire voters almost 50 of New Hampshire voters almost 50 of them decided at the very end and the debate performance by Amy Klobuchar made all the difference, since that debate performance, she has raised 5 million online. And a third place went. And delegates. Which is all that matters. Not to rumble, but i think we do have christian on tape saying Amy Klobuchar wasnt going to go anywhere after i will. We now have these three candidates in the middle lane, we have Pete Buttigieg, amy and the prospect of might bloom by jumping into that lane as well. How important it is it for the democrats that fairly soon it is one of those moderates who emerges . Mike bloomberg. It would be great, but it will not happen. We are now in a war
of attrition for delegates. So on the delegate count which is all that matters, Pete Buttigieg is the front runner. Two more delegates to Bernie Sanders. But it is a little bit more complicated. We have four candidates right now who are cannibalizing one another when it comes to support. That is before bloomberg gets in. Elizabeth warren cutting into Bernie Sanders on the progressive side. Even though she finished 9 last night. Pete buttigieg cutting into the youth and Younger Voters support our Bernie Sanders, you saw that and all of the college town. That cut his margin. Then Amy Klobuchar cutting into buttigieg of the matter aside and that probably cost buttigieg a first place win last night. Moderate side. Now you throw when michael bloomberg, who is living out there with the likes we have no idea what kind of effect that will be and we wont know until super tuesday, but from already come you have four candidates cutting into one another all trying to be the alternative that emerges from that and i dont think that will happen now and until well after super tuesday. Lets talk a little
bit about Mike Bloomberg. You said it was a war of attrition. I was told yesterday so far because of the money he has, he is been able to make his own message and tell the voters what he wants. It is not. People havent been looking very closely at his record. And his record in office in the yard. Stop and frisk for instance was a big issue for Mike Bloomberg. In the year. What has emerged, the war of attrition we are talking about, a new tape with some of his private thoughts on what went on in new york was a private lesson. Have a listen. When you talk about a place like
South Carolina and in some of the Southern States were the minority vote will count, that will be playing again and again no doubt. No question. Here is the mistake Mike Bloomberg made. He clearly that it would be better to skip the four forest contest but as a result he was not vetted. Nobody bats candidates better than New Hampshire. The rest of the country knows that. He will pay a price for that. But when it comes to the African American vote, nobody, including Mike Bloomberg and the remaining top four candidates and joe biden, have a perfect record with the African American constituency. Joe biden has the best one but as katie referenced earlier come his support is already thinking. But african American Voters are very savvy. They want the same thing every democrat wants what that which is to be donald trump. They will support the person they believe, even if they are less than perfect and they all are in that matter, who can be donald trump. I think african American Voters are going to forgive or overlook some of Mike Bloombergs lost just like going to forgive or overlook some of Mike Bloombergs lostjust like Amy Klobuchar has as a prosecutor,
Elizabeth Warren has, Bernie Sanders has never enjoyed great African American support, and Pete Buttigieg record as mayor is well known on that front. So i think it is one thing that you know unifies everybody on the democratic side is beating donald trump and that will beating donald trump and that will be the true measure at the end of this race. Thank you forjoining us. Im glad im inside and poor marion is outside. Thank you for that. This is outside. Thank you for that. This isa is outside. Thank you for that. This is a interesting point she raises. African American Voters are not a monolithic block. Of course there area monolithic block. Of course there are a lot of different points of view there and some are more socially conservative and more liberal and economically liberal. But there is and seems to be one unifying theme in this election whether you are African American and white or hispanic or democrats want to be donald trump. They want a candidate who can be donald trump and that has to be a candidate who can win. Joe biden hasnt won anything yet. That is why you see his numbers file amongst
african American Voters. Can ijust tell you my stat at the day come he has run for president three times, joe biden, he has yet to finish than fourth in primary or caucus. South carolina is make a break. Yes. Make or break. In order forjustice to be fair, it is important, in a democracy, that everyone is equal under the law and seen to be equal under the law. But that premise is under some scrutiny in washington today. Four prosecutors resigned last night after Thejustice Department decided to reduce the sentence of 7 9 years they had recommended for roger stone an ally of president trump. Mr stone was convicted last year of witness tampering, lying to congress and misleading investigators. The doj asked for the reduction shortly after donald trump had tweeted that the prosecutors recommended sentence was unfair. Today mr trump praised the dojs action. Congratulations to
attorney general bill barr, tweeted the president , for taking charge of a case that was totally out of control and perhaps should not have even been brought, rogue prosecutors maybe . He wrote in a second tweet. There are echoes here of Richard Nixons saturday night massacre when Senior Leaders at the do] quit rather than follow the president s orders to fire the special prosecutor investigating him. One of the republican senators, lisa murkowski, who last week voted to acquit the president said i dont like this chain of events. The president weighs in, all of a sudden, justice comes back and says change the deal. I think most people in america would look at that and say hmm, thatjust doesnt look right. We arejoined by legal analyst kim wehle a former assistant us attorney, author of how to read the constitution and why. Give us the significance of this move by the doj. Give us the significance of this move by the do]. I dont think you
can overstate how important this is in terms of a shift in our democratic process and the independence of the justice department, traditionally there is no law that limits the president s ability to call the shots in the criminal Justice System ability to call the shots in the criminalJustice System and the federal criminaljustice criminalJustice System and the federal criminal Justice System criminalJustice System and the federal criminalJustice System that is headed by the department of justice. But that has been essentially how every president has operated on the theory that tear at its worst is when people empower basically use the criminaljustice process to punish or reward people who agree or disagree with their politics and here we see blatantly a turn of events which demonstrates that the president s political cronies, listen, remember, roger stone was convicted by regular people of Crimes Involving the
wikileaks people of Crimes Involving the wikilea ks leak of people of Crimes Involving the wikileaks leak of stolen information from the democratic servers against hillary clinton. So there is a blatant conflict of interest. Number two, he was convicted by special counsellor Robert Muellers team. He was appointed by Rod Rosenstein specifically to make him independent of the department ofjustice and now we have the department ofjustice without Robert Mueller jumping we have the department ofjustice without Robert Muellerjumping in and destroying that independence. I think it is a dark day for democracy right now and people should be legitimately concerned. Kim, is the problem here that it looks like the president could be getting special favours from the department of justice, even if he is not or not this week or even if the default the 00] this week or even if the default the doj genuinely felt that the sentencing guidelines had handed down to roger stone were too harsh for the crimes he committed, is that
a perception issue . There are two issues. One is an actual conflict of interest. Which we can potentially connect the dots and assume that step number two is as you suggest, the perception of a conflict of interest and perception of conflict of interest are generally avoided by federal government officials as well as actual conflict of interest in pa rt as actual conflict of interest in part because the american public, to believe in the fairness and legitimacy of the justice department, it has to act or appear to be neutral and recall, william barr, the attorney general, under oath when asked by senator Kamala Harris as to whether he had been every directed or been suggested that he undertaken investigation by the then president of the United States into an individual, he hedged and said he had a grapple with the word suggests, he he wouldnt answer the question, ultimately he said i dont know the answer to the question of whether the president
has ever suggested that the department ofjustice has ever suggested that the department of justice undertake has ever suggested that the department ofjustice undertake an investigation of an individual. That is significant he was obviously worried about potentially the truth a nswer worried about potentially the truth answer and now we are saying the truth come out. Thank you, kim for joining us. A lot of people concerned about what they saw last night, christian. Yes. Indeed. A lot of comments. The British Government says it plans to take legal action against large social media firms and websites that fail to remove illegal or harmful content. Under radical new plans set out today there will be a legal duty of care on social media firms. Its designed to put more pressure on the tech giants to deal with things like child exploitation, self harming and terrorist content on the internet. The government says it is minded to appoint ofcom as the regulator which already oversees newspaper and broadcast content. The penalties we are told will be proportionate to the harm caused, meaning the larger social media firms, facebook, instagram, reddit and the more popular websites
will be the most affected. Lets speak now to tech ethicist Alice Thwaite whojoins me now. Nice to see you. My first instinct in this is that ofcom already has a lot on his hands. Yes. Or for that reason that is a good at regulated they are. It would easily expand out they are. It would easily expand out the duties they already have. Thatis the duties they already have. That is the reason they are a good regulator. They already have good harmful content regulation. They make sure they can i have violent or sexual content before nine p m. , language in that kind of thing is also regulated. They cannot have violent. There seems to be a similar vein the government is going down. Although this is called online harms report, it is really about content moderation what you can and cannot see it what you cannot post online. Within content, there are two strands. There is the illegal strand, illegal content like
paedophilia, inside terrorism, and the other strand which is Cyber Bullying, trolling, that kind of thing, very separate things, when is for Law Enforcement and regulation. The problem with the original online harms paper which came out about a year ago was that the scope was far too broad. The harms that encompass things from terrorist to Cyber Bullying and almost everything in between, this information from all these very separate things you can 90, these very separate things you can go, these are separate harms actually in one of the biggest problems with this whole report in this whole legislator is categorising everything within harms because the reality is that in democracy, you dont really think about harm is being the number one moral axiom. You think about democratic principles and human rights from symbols. That was one of the biggest criticisms of the online harms report when he came a year ago. Theres been a written consultation which is mass asked looking to various different experts about what that white paper produce. The reality is is that they have
said that of course there will be teething problems but they will produce guidelines further down the line and we all sat there thinking, one come online harms isnt the way i would go for the first regulation, i would go for the first regulation, i would look at issues around democratic freedom, privacy, human rights. Access to culture. Why are we focused so much on safety . The first one is yes, they said those they will start those out. Secondly, with regards to privacy, on the online consultation they published today, it was very bizarre they way they talked about the dissection between public and private platforms. So they said that basically most people said private platforms are to be regulated. We think about whats at. But on the other hand you have tender, which they think should be regulated. It is bizarre. Whats app. They think should be regulated. It is bizarre. Whats app. Thank you ndi for that. That Broad Spectrum i think for ofcom to look at. It will not be easy to get that companies to
engage. When they looked at fake news, Mark Zuckerberg was very keen to engage. Whether or not he would be engaging with that now with the new laws. We just got time, christian, can we just quickly bring you something a little bit more fun . It looks like it could be a frame from ratatouille. Or something my beatrix, but the photo we are about to show you is in fact ioo beatrix, but the photo we are about to show you is in fact 100 real. It isa to show you is in fact 100 real. It is a great picture of two mice. Stations. We have to bring you this before we go. Look. On the london platform. Im sorry we could end this half saying this. Sam really took a picture visited the every night for a week. Last night. I wonder if they were his crimes he was scattered around the platform. The patients to get a photograph like that. Quite extraordinary. He got the peoples choice award. We might show you some of the other
photos. Later in the programme. This is beyond 100 days from the bbc. Hello. Storm dennis is on the way it will bring some disruptive weather to the uk this weekend but before we get there, i think a moment to enjoy some beautiful snow covered landscape in highlands of scotland. It has when ascending day with a bit more in the way of sunshine. Overnight we can see a few more problems weather wise come average of High Pressure moving eastwards across the country, but an area of low pressure pushing cloud when they raided to the southwest and bring a milder air. Notice the frost for Northern England and scotland come a sharp frost in northern scotland. Temperature is 90 10 celsius for a time. During the early hours of thursday, we see this ban of rain moving into the cold air and turning to snow for a time across the hills of Northern England and scotland. And potentially for a time down to the lower levels of scotland. This means we could see some disruption to transporters as we start thursday morning. Do the rest of thursday, the hill snow and rain will slowly pull away from scotland but we will be left with a lot of cloud in what they call it a temperature is 4 degrees here for some further south into mild air, 10 degrees and windy around is still a number of showers, across the eastern parts. For friday, and other been arraigned is on the way and, this one heavy rain across southern scotland combined with snow with the risk of localised flooding especially given how what the weather has been over recent days. The when the front weekends as it reaches england. Not too much in the way of rain. Into the weekend come all about storm dennis. Not just the weekend. Storm dennis will be impacting the uk saturday, sunday and monday, bringing severe gills and monday, bringing severe gills and also of rain, heavy and if the some flooding issues. On saturday, the strongest ones will be across Western Areas but as well is that,
Western Areas but as well is that, we will have extensive rain, particularly heavy across wales in southern england, then we get another dollop of rain into the already soggy areas on sunday. Look how what it is. The risk of letting increases here on sunday, at the same time, when you get through the irish sea in some of our English Channel coast. Whilst all the time billy across inland areas. It gets a waiter through. Sunday night it could get even windy year for a time. Across scotland in Northern England. The wind is Strong Enough to bring down some trees in time, hence the risk for disruption. Youre watching beyond one hundred days with me katty kay in manchester New Hampshire, Christian Fraser is in london. Our top stories. Bernie sanders wins the New Hampshire democratic primary but Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar are hot on his heels. The race is farfrom over. As the first case of coronavirus in london is confirmed, we hearfrom one passenger on board the quarantined cruise ship injapan to find out how shes getting on. Plus, the pope rejects plans to allow married priests in the amazon, despite a shortage in the region. So now what . Theres been another rise in the numbers of deaths and people infected by the coronavirus covid i9. The total number of deaths worldwide has now topped 1,100 with over 115,000 confirmed cases of the disease. The first case of the virus has been confirmed in london in the past hour. In singapore hundreds of employees have been evacuated from the countrys biggest bank, after one person fell ill with the virus. And injapan, Health Officials say more than 175 people have now tested positive onboard a cruise ship quarantined outside yokohama, where thousands of passengers have been stuck for a full 7 days now, and it will be another week before there is any hope that they can leave. Among the passengers is american best selling novelist gay courter. She gave us a special insight into what life is like quarantined on a cruise ship. It is odd how you adjust to a different lifestyle. I cannot tell you what day it is without looking, what day of the week. The days blend together. But we have a routine, we are good prisoners, we stay in our rooms and just go out on the balcony. We put our trash out in the appropriate way. We pick up our messages outside the door. We wear our masks when we open the door for our food trays. We certainly look forward to the food, like any prisoner. This is the poshest penitentiary there is, the food has gotten significantly better, it is very healthy, we have three choices for our meals at lunch and dinner. The pastry chef is trying to kill us with chocolate rather than the virus we have got clean sheets from yesterday, i mean, this is what it come down to on a luxury vacation. To hoping for clean sheets. But the ship is trying to make our lives palatable. They put lots more movies on the close circuit system, they have people reading stories to the children locked in their rooms with japanese and English Speaking readers. They sent toys around to all the children on the ship every day, they get a new prize every day. They are trying but my anxiety was so bad this morning that. I thought i was great, i was handling it wonderfully, but then i walked around the cabin and i just wondered what was wrong. Something was wrong. And i looked down and i am wearing two different left shoes. So, i am losing it, i think, at some level, but i am trying to hold it together on another. On the very first day,
they took our temperature in the ear with a thermometer that they kept reusing and we filled out sheets saying how we were feeling, that was a week ago. Nobody has contacted us since about our health, nobody has been in this room to check our health. Five days into it, they delivered electronic thermometers and we are supposed to take our temperatures and if it is high we are supposed to report it to the health department. But that is self reporting. How many people might be on the ship that are too afraid to turn themselves in or dont trust medical care . For a few days, the gentleman from hong kong had gotten off the ship and had come down with the virus and at that point, just statistically, i was trying to calm our travel friends here and say, look, heres one man, maybe he came from china,
but what are the chances . I dont remember sitting next to any chinese gentleman in the last few days. What are the chances it could effect as . But, as the numbers increase, maybe i did not sit next to a man from china but there are americans and australians and crew. The possibility of contact is now enormous. Somebody told me that we are the worst cluster of disease outside of china. I do not want to be a part of any cluster of disease. She was speaking for the quarantine ship. The pastry chef is trying to kill them with chocolate it must be a terrifying situation, though. The European Parliament has backed
a tough eu negotiating stance with britain, ahead of the trade talks opening next month. Its focusing on securing fishing rights for eu boats in uk waters and a continued role for the European Court ofjustice. But while the parliament will need to ratify any trade deal agreed the european commissions actual mandate will be set by the 27 members states. And their ambassadors are meeting tonight to agree their priorities. Im joined by the institute for governments georgina wright. As far as as farasi as far as i can see, there are going to be three majorflash points. Yes, the European Court ofjustice, but also be a level Playing Field. What does that mean . The level Playing Field is a term measure that says both sides need to be competing on an equalfooting. Both sides need to be competing on an equal footing. If the both sides need to be competing on an equalfooting. If the uk both sides need to be competing on an equal footing. If the uk changes its rules are decides to have a more favourable subsidy regime, so what has actually developed that manufacturing industry, the eu is saying that you may be giving more
aid you in history that we are and therefore we are not copied in the same level Playing Field. Some Member States really do not want British Business undercutting eu business. The are seeing no regression on the standard set right now but the eu got the uk government have said that they have left and the ship you to set their own subsidies. I was talk about fish. It is huge for the uk government and equally important for some eu states. What is going to happen on fish . It has huge emotional connotation for some eu states. Danish fishermen claim they have been fishing for centuries but there are two major priorities to the eu. One is access to the european british waters and secondly as being able to fish in them. The eu have one quarter that would last for a couple of years but
the uk government but rather it was revised annually and it is a matter for negotiation. We have talked about. The eu say that if you want access to the Single Market at a play by the rules. But the trouble is, one european diplomat said that what they are selling is a Porsche Cayenne and what the uk want izzy peel p 50. Add to look up what looked like, and it is this. What is going on here . Why do not what this big deal . What is the uk Government Strategy . Im glad to show that picture because i did not know that was either. There are several considerations for the eu. We did talk about this political declaration with the uk government and, though it is non binding, it
does set out a division for the future of the uks cooperation with the eu. That is more towards the porsche. But the uk government are saying that they are going to become a third country so treat us like it, you see that yes, that requires jet along the borders. We have the question of the border between the Northern Ireland and the republic but also the bridge the border between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Is this big loss in language . Sort of, but its also about the eu being a regular toy space that has rules and paperwork and they dont want it to be about a gentlemen agreement. The fair thing to say is that we do worry about the uk on its doorstep becoming a major competitor at the try to navigate that. Will talk more about this. Thank you very much. The former deputy Prime Minister of italy, Matteo Salvini is to go on trial for kidnap. As interior minister
he used his position to turn away a coastguard ship that had rescued more than 100 migrants at sea. Today, the Italian Senate removed his immunity from prosecution, so that magistrates in catania, sicily, could formally begin a criminal case. The far right leader said he was proud of what he had done and would go to court with his head held high. Our correspondent mark lowen is in rome and joins us now. Ican imagine i can imagine that a bit like donald trump he is going to use good uses for electoral purposes . trump he is going to use good uses for electoral purposes . I was about to say, there might be deja vu year, because while most politicians might flee or deny or evade justice when facing charges, salvinis response has been to bring it on. It plays to his base. This is a man who has built his political career in the last few years on this hard, anti migrant line. The populist that
presents himself as a defending manic for the people against the establishment. When the senate today voted to allow him to face trial on charges of illegally detaining migrants on board a rescue boat last year, this plays to his Political Base and he has said that he will ta ke base and he has said that he will take the absolute same decision, if you are back in office, when, he said, but of course in the long term, if it were to lead to each trial, and a conviction, he could be barred from political office. But we saw him already have a setback last month at the polls, can he actually turn this round . Month at the polls, can he actually turn this round . It does not look like things are going in his direction at the moment. He has failed twice to topple the government because government from the sidelines. Firstly, he quit last year, hoping it would spark fresh elections, which it did not. Then he hoped he would win this bastion of the centre left in northern italy this year and you didnt. There was no sparking of government collapse, i know he is facing a trial. divided the Catholic Church for years should married men be allowed to become priests in more isolated regions of the world, to make up for a severe shortage . Today, under pressure from the traditional wing of the church, pope francis said no, he would not support that change, depsite his bishops giving it their backing last year. The proposal had been put forward to deal with a crisis in remote communities in the Amazon Region where catholics can go long periods without receiving mass. Instead, the pope took a more conservative line. What was needed, he said, were ministers who understand amazonian sensibilities and cultures. He urged bishops to to encourage those who want to become missionaries to opt for the Amazon Region. Joining us now is claire giangrave, the vatican correspondent for the Religion News service. Did i prize your surname correctly . No one ever does. It always strikes me that a lot of people feel pope francis is liberal, and on social
issues years, but with doctrine he issues years, but with doctrine he is quite conservative . Yes. He has a lwa ys is quite conservative . Yes. He has always considered himself a conservative and back in argentina he saw himself leaning towards the conservative side. His predecessor was a much more conservative individual. John paul ii and pope francis have this in common in the sense that was back there was a book published yesterday with an interview of pope francis what he did find the commonalities between himself and his predecessor and in that document he also said that he said no to married priests. Is there also an argument to be made that he is just also an argument to be made that he isjust plain also an argument to be made that he is just plain savvy politics . As he realises that this is something that would be untenable in the vatican
hierarchy . He organised the bishops for further discussion, and that is a big what a lot pope francis does. That is what makes it different to others before him, which is what makes revolutionary, but he will let people he does not agree were to bring their ideas. The bishops who we re bring their ideas. The bishops who were for married priests and for women to become deacons, we with their every single day and allowed to have a place in the pulpits, but it would be a mistake to label pope francis as being a liberal and to look at this on secular terms would also be incorrect. He has spoken for quickly and strongly in his belief that it does not believe that celibacy should be given away in any circumstance, even in the is a serious shortage of priests. He also
wa nts to serious shortage of priests. He also wants to make a decision today on women deacons, and he has not gone for that either . No, he greeted a commission in 2016 to discuss the topic up we are yet to see results. He was asked to address the issue once again but made no mention of it in the final document. Thank you very much, very interesting. Im fascinated by this now because i watched the the two popes. When Pope Benedict weighed in, it influences pope francis, i am that was more intrigued.
