florida coast and bringing that capability back to america. Three main engines up and burning. And lift off of Space Shuttle atlanta. Is complacency in rural areas, because they feel there is not much of a threat or a real problem . Thats right. Hsbc holdings has posted a 65 drop in first half pre tax profit, more than expected, as the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on businesses forced the asia focused bank to boost its loan loss provisions. Europes biggest bank by assets reported a pre tax profit for the First Six Months this year of a. 32 billion, almost a third of what it made in the same period a year ago the bank has faced headwinds coming from every direction in recent months. Firstly, the pandemic and subsequent economic crisis has meant its needed to set aside huge amounts of money in case creditors cant repay their loans. That came at the same time as oil prices plummeted, which also exposed them to defaulting loans. One failed oil trader defaulted on a loan to hsbc to the tune of 600 million. And while the bank is headquartered in london, most of its business is done in hong kong. The ongoing political instability in the city, coupled with covid lockdowns, has decimated a core source of revenue for the bank. They are saying, as you say, it was credit losses and they are saying it is going to be worse in the second quarter. In the First Quarter companies were drawing on reddit lines, and building up the cash reserves, but were inspecting loan defaults and expect them to go higher yet credit. Outlook is grim, not only geopolitically but also in
terms of the bank itself. The executives are talking about accelerating the Transformation Programme that they were going to do the restructuring and that would mean that is thousands of job losses worldwide, coming at a time when unemployment is very high everywhere. They are saying they will proceed thoughtfully but people will lose their jobs. As you say, there is also a considerable amount of uncertainty for the bank. Everywhere, not only because of the pandemic but also because of the ongoing tensions in hong kong and china, and it is controversial, that it has backed the legislation in hong kong. Airasia is having a rough time. You said it. It may be asias largest budget carrier but it is not immune to the losses the Aviation Industry has had to face due to the travel lockdowns brought on by covid 19, and the shares of its long haul unit, airasia acts,
fell a staggering 28 at the opening today, down about 20 , shares in the main group of airasia are falling about 5 and of course all of this after the Company Reported particularly dire results friday showing that it has been suffering well before the pandemic and those travel restrictions came into play, losing about 180 million in the january quarter, but this was its fourth st quarterly loss, airasias long haulfleet was grounded in mid april, apart from a limited number of cargo and charter flights, apart from a limited number of cargo and charterflights, the number of passengers that the airline carried as a whole fell about 25 , just over a million. The airline s warning it might have liquidity concerns and this has many of its investors worried. Lets have a look at markets in general in asia. A fairly mixed

Americans who have lost theirjob during the pandemic have been receiving an extra 600 a week in unemployment benefit, as part of a government package to help the us economy weather the storm. But that temporary aid expired friday, with democrats and republicans still unable to agree a compromise deal to replace it, despite lenthy discussions over the weekend. Joining me now is tom graff,
head of fixed income at Brown Advisory in baltimore. Good to see you tom. Give us your take on how important this measure was, the 600 each week for those who lost theirjobs. The idea was to keep them spending, wasnt it . |j the idea was to keep them spending, wasnt it . I think it represents a significant risk to Consumer Spending here in the United States, total retail spending is only down about 1 from its peak earlier, before covid 19 and almost all of that is explained by spending on automobiles and gasoline, so that 600 extra payment alone with other pandemic oriented Unemployment Insurance benefit payments probably increased personal income by about 6 , whichjust about personal income by about 6 , which just about offset the
total loss from folks losing their jobs, total loss from folks losing theirjobs, so this definitely isa theirjobs, so this definitely is a significant risk to consumers here in the us. What do you think the politicians might come up with to replace it if anything at all . Im not a political analyst, iwould say that. It is very unlikely it seems that the entire 600 extra payment will continue, it seems likely that will be a lower number. That comes at a time when unemployment is actually falling and falling fairly rapidly from a topline perspective, so its possible that even the reduction in extra Unemployment Benefits, it still allows Consumer Spending to continue in a really short term. What has us concerned, what we are thinking about a lot on our strategy is really the second wave of layoffs, the folks that were laid off in
march and april during lockdown could be fairly confident that they will get the jobs back wa nts they will get the jobs back wants those lockdowns ended, and on top of that they were getting extra assistance, 1200 in one time stimulus payments from the government, et cetera, so those folks probably spent as though they had a job still. This next wave of layoffs probably come because the demand is weak and in that case, those folks are going to spend at a much slower pace. Those permanent job losses, people who did not report themselves as temporarily laid off was about 1 million total job losses in the last two months, so thats what were really focused on, less about theres really short term just exactly Unemployment Benefits were. Briefly, what is your long term outlook for the us economy, the wells biggest . Were economy, the wells biggest . We re pretty economy, the wells biggest . Were pretty cautious, i think there will be a double wave
recession, there will be the severe 30 gdp that we saw in quarter two, but there will be a normal recessionary pullback within the next three or four quarters. Good morning, thanks for getting up so early. Are you participating . We are. We signed up pretty early, we have done a specific offer for it but we are taking part. And to what extent will it help you, do you think . Actually, we have
already taken, we booked for the 13 days in august we have taken 15,000 bookings across the five or six restaurants that we will have open during that we will have open during that period. And you think that is because of this scheme . Its definitely contributed. We are quite busy on the other days and we had bookings beforehand, but it has definitely helped. When we announced our specific deal, we took five and a half thousand bookings in six hours. Wow it just goes thousand bookings in six hours. Wow itjust goes to show that it has had an impact on peoples psyche. But in terms of how it will help you long term, what do you think and how badly have you been hit by lockdown . I think the whole industry has been hit massively, and we are certainly not immune from that. We had no income for 106 days or something, and we have had to borrow to get through that, but iam borrow to get through that, but i am confident we will survive, and in terms of whether this helps, i think it is a boon to the industry. I think what the
industry wants more than anything is the idea that we get back to full sales and we survive without government help. That is going to take some time but this feels like a good kick start to that, both in terms of trying to push customers into the restaurants, ata time customers into the restaurants, at a time when almost any restau ra nt at a time when almost any restaurant or hub is at capacity but also the government signalling to consumers what a good job the industry has done to become covid secure. Was going to say because you say we want to get back to full sales but it wont be, will it because you cant have as many people sitting and eating . And i think rally that is the logic of the scheme you are is the logic of the scheme you a re exactly is the logic of the scheme you are exactly right. Restaurants really ca n are exactly right. Restaurants really can only make money when they are busy. And traditionally we would have done most of that thursday to sunday, but now we cant. Social distancing is in place, we cant be full on a thursday
sunday. I think the vat cut is also intended to help there but this scheme, monday to wednesday is intended to help with demand at a time when most restau ra nts with demand at a time when most restaurants have got the excess capacity. And in terms of your staff, of course there is a lot of pressure on them as you have all these people coming in august, are they all prepared for what will be quite a tough month, i would for what will be quite a tough month, iwould imagine . For what will be quite a tough month, i would imagine . Yeah. Is the right kind of problem, isnt it . The right kind of problem is having a busy restau ra nt. Problem is having a busy restaurant. The much more problematic thing is being shut, being unable to work, and that there is a really clear preference amongst our staff to earn money through work other than through fellow, but also i should say, our experience is not necessarily representative of the industry. We are a destination restaurant, we had a specific offer. I think really the measure of the scheme and the measure of any
government intervention is not going to be whether a high end state restaurant survives during this, its elsewhere in industry, small independent restau ra nts. But it wont be for the start of the week. Weve got a little ridge of High Pressure building in, which has been easing the showers back overnight. So, actually, its going to be quite a chilly start this morning, but with plenty of sunshine before the shower cloud gets bubbling away. So, there will already be a few showers in North Western areas anyway, and with a weak weather front brushing past here, that will tend to merge those showers a little bit. But plenty of drier weather for the south east of scotland, possibly fewer showers than sunday in Northern Ireland. And, again, just a scattering for england and wales, but by the afternoon, particularly in eastern areas,
they are likely to turn heavy with some thunder around, slow moving downpours. But away from the showers in the sunshine, feeling pleasantly warm, but the wind will be picking up in the north west of scotland. Why . Because weve got our next weather front on its way in. So, through the course of the night, its likely to turn quite wet through Northern Ireland and also quite mild with lots of low cloud around, so a very different feel to our weather, i think, across North Western areas as we head into tuesday. In fact, through tuesday and wednesday, it does look wetterfor a time, some significant rain around and some stronger winds. But, again, it doesnt last. So, this is the low pressure which will be responsible for that rain, 50 60 mm over the highlands of scotland, tightly packed isobars denoting some stronger winds for many through tuesday and wednesday further south as well. The rain looks itll be a feature mostly for scotland and Northern Ireland, but there will be low cloud and drizzle setting in across northern england, wales, the south west while southern and eastern areas may well stay largely fine and dry and warm with some sunshine around. Clearly not feeling warm further north despite the mild air here and all the moisture. Which will continue to fall,
that rain, as we go through tuesday night and into wednesday. Some uncertainty as to how far south its going to come, but again the High Pressures closer to the south. So, if those weather fronts do come southwards, the likelihood is they wont produce much rain, theyll just fizzle out. And then the High Pressure builds later in the week, just pushing those or nudging those weather fronts further north again.
