Hello and welcome. The National Party convention in us politics is generally a boisterous, rousing affair never more so than in a president ial election year, as the partys nominees are confirmed. For donald trump it would be a vital platform in his bid to win a second term in the white house. But with a spike in coronavirus cases in florida, where the convention was due to take place next month, he has called the whole thing off. Mr trump said he would give a speech ahead of us elections as planned, but in a different form. The bbcs north america correspondent david willis reports. President trump had wanted nothing more than to accept his pa rtys nothing more than to accept his partys nomination in front of a packed arena stop the coronavirus has now put paid to thatis coronavirus has now put paid to that is that has to so many other aspects of american life. So the delegates are going to north carolina, and they will be doing the nomination. And were going to do some other things with rallies, and stuff online where discussing, and i think we going to do it really well. Im still going to do a Convention Speech but in a different form but we wont do a big crowded convention per se, isjust a big crowded convention per se, is just not the right time for that. Florida, the intended site of the main part of the republican convention, has just set a new record for the number of deaths resulting from the coronavirus. 173 in the space of 2a hours. Such has been the third of cases that officials in jacksonville had third of cases that officials injacksonville had already expressed disquiet at staging such a large gathering, and the relief was apparent in a Statement Issued by the mayor, and the citys zero. We appreciate present donald trump considering a Public Health and safety concerns in making this incredibly difficult decision. As always injacksonville, Public Safety is a number one priority. Party conventions are huge set pieces that typically take lace in front of thousands of party members. Cancelling the florida event could hurt the president in a state in which he is trailing his democratic rivaljoe biden. Trump simply cannot win the election without winning florida and as you know, florida and as you know, florida is the biggest swing state in the country in the last four, five, state wide elections, including the last couple of president ial elections, the margin of victory for the winner in florida has been 1 . This is a very tight, competitive state. It isa very tight, competitive state. It is a must have for trump and it isa it is a must have for trump and it is a really want to have four democrats. The coronavirus has already had a huge impact on campaigning. A trump rally in tulsa, oklahoma last month drew a fraction of the anticipated crowd and plans for the president to address a separate out or covering had to be scrapped. Joe bidens Campaign Announced lands to scale back their convention several weeks ago in the interests of Public Safety. But just as it is shaping the campaigning, so with less than four months ago until the coronavirus was also shake the turnout, introducing yet another element of unpredictability into an election that already promises to be anything but normal. David willis, bbc news los angeles. Steve herman is White House Bureau chief with voice of america news. Hes in alexandria virginia. Thank you forjoining us. The convention of course is huge. Just the Coronavirus Crisis is simply much bigger and this is bowing to the inevitable. Suddenly. The risk outweighs the benefits the president realised that at some point, if it wasnt today perhaps yesterday, looking at the analysis here. It would have been great to have this huge eventin been great to have this huge event in florida as was pointed out in the report, a critical stage for donald trump to win and he is behind apparently in florida right now. But there was just too much florida right now. But there wasjust too much risk. If people had come into that convention, spread the coronavirus and left, spread it around the country, the president certainly would have been blamed for that. Can you read much significance into the loss of a moment like this because of course, a big staring crowd is just because of course, a big staring crowd isjust what because of course, a big staring crowd is just what he loves, could see how he would feed off it, how perhaps republicans would feed off it. Sure, in recent weeks though it looked like it was going to be more of a repeat of what we saw in tulsa with empty seats rather than a packed arena. Even as the president acknowledged to have all of these people come in there and tell them you have got to wear masks and practice social distancing in this type of atmosphere, these are alcohol field events, is a celebration. They were going to essentially be like a bunch of college kids on spring break. There would not have been much discipline. Right. Obviously as every politician would do, you have got to make the best of any particular situation and Donald Trumps message certainly this week has been that of protector in chief and he emphasised that in the course of his announcement. Yes, with the resumption of these coronavirus briefings in the white house, the president has taken a more cautious, realistic tone, acknowledging that the problem is going to get worse before it gets better. We have never heard that sort of language from him before where he was just saying it is going to disappear at the very beginning of course, and he was hoping it would go away and just days. And so realisation has really set in at the white house and in the oval office. When the democrats and joe biden were talking about what they might do in terms of a convention, recognising it would be difficult, he was quite quick to have a little dig at them. Has the democrats seen an opportunity to get back to . Well, the democrats have always been very prudent about what they were going to do in milwaukee. We know that at both conventions, even before todays announcement that there was going to be very limited media allowed, and of course usually you want as many reporters and cameras as possible as these events. So, yes, there is this atmosphere along with the democrats, we told you so, to the republicans. But i dont think anybody really wanted to see this go ahead, including a lot of donors that were hesitant to sponsor this event in jacksonville, florida just fearing it wasnt going to come off and if they were a part of this somehow that there was going to be a lot of very bad publicity afterwards. Ok, thank you very much, steve. Steve herman from the voice of america news. A new study has warned that unless theres a global effort to reduce Plastic Waste, 1. 3 billion tonnes of it may be dumped on land and in the oceans in the next 20 years. Most plastic ends up in landfill but plenty is still dumped or burned which is both poisonous and warms the climate. The researchers say the best remedy would be to provide about two billion people in the global south with proper methods of disposal. Coronavirus of course doesnt help. You might have seen this picture which was viewed by millions of times on social media platforms. That is a whole row of protective gear, of masks and the like courtesy of covid 19. Joining me live is the man holding the stick, gary stokes who is in hong kong. Gary, thank you very much for joining us. Give us an idea, the picture tells its story but how much time and efforts did it take to gather that much debris . That talk about ten 15 minutes on a 100 metre stretch of beach on a far flung, sort of, uninhabited island in hong kong. That is pretty terrifying isnt it. Perhaps all the more so because it seems to send the message that that great surge of interest in Plastic Waste and the state of our oceans has had to ta ke the state of our oceans has had to take a backseat because something bigger has come to preoccupy our something bigger has come to preoccu py our thoughts. Something bigger has come to preoccupy our thoughts. Yes, sure. I mean everybody obviously reacted as expected with the covid outbreak, everybody just grabbed with the covid outbreak, everybodyjust grabbed single use masks and now we know it is here to stay for a while. That is where we do have fears on the sheer quantity of masks, single use masks that are being disposed on and how they are being disposed of. You have worked with oceans asia and youve got it on your hats there, what is the state of play you would say within a shopin play you would say within a shop in particular . I know from my own experience you can go to certain countries and the shorelines are awash with rubbish and plastic detritus really. Is there a mechanism and infrastructure emerging to deal with this . Our beaches in Southeast Asia are covered in, as you say, in trash. This is just another form of trash. Its going to be left as a legacy for future generations. In terms of how we handle it, in the same way that we handle all irresponsible use of plastics basically, single use. We need to get out of the single use and into reusable, using reusable masks is one solution. Is that recognised within asia frankly . I know it isa within asia frankly . I know it is a slow process everywhere but to some places find it harder to adapt to that than others . Yes, absolutely. In some places, a reasonable mask is quite expensive and single use a very cheap stop in other places, i heard in the philippines for example, people we re philippines for example, people were buying it reusable is because it was too expensive to get single use. It is demographically, its going to be different in each country. The figures are certainly frightening. Gary, thank you very much indeed and thank you for providing it that chilling photograph of what is going on in the world. Gary stokes. The day has arrived but the controversy just goes the day has arrived but the controversyjust goes on. Tu rkeys controversyjust goes on. Turkeys architectural gem the hagia sophia is going to be host to press for the first time in eight years later today. The turkish president has been in attendance and has been unapologetic about converting the Historic Building from a museum back to a mosque. The time for present hagia sophia has arrived. The turkish president has been waiting for this day. He has toured the building, featuring new green carpeting for prayers. He has posed for photographs. Outside, he has unveiled a park for the hagia sophia grand mosque. It is better we believe to use this place as a house of worship than a museum. It was used as a mosque for almost half a millennium. Istanbuls from one was originally built as a church in the year 537. Over 900 years later, it was converted into a mosque, becoming the heart of the Muslim Ottoman empire. Sentries later, in 193a, it became a museum as turkey transitioned to become more secular. The move to turn the hagia sophia back into a mosque has sparked a wave of criticism. Church leaders say using the site exclusively for muslim worship risks deepening religious divisions. In the vatican this month, the pope was clear around his unhappiness. Translation my thoughts go to istanbul. I think of hagia sophia and i am very pained. Christian mosaics and imagery will be covered during prayers, they will be visible, wanting that wont change and will be concealed is the famous resident cat and her friends. They get to stay. So today is the date hagia sophia returns to its role as a mosque. The Usjustice Department has announced that it will investigate the use of force against protesters in portland, oregon. It follows another night of unrest in which the citys mayor was tear gassed. Protestors have been on the streets there for more than 50 days and are now clashing nightly with federal agents. A group of self described moms, have beenjoining the protests, they say they are shielding young protestors from the federal authorities. Julianne jackson is an activist with the so called wall of moms. For me, i have been out in the protest prior to the wall of moms being a part of them, i have included my kids in safe protests and safe events i think its really caught that we include moms because of number one, the image. I think it is a very powerful image, obviously, it is captured worldwide attention and i think it is also very telling of what is going on in portland right now and the level of Police Brutality that these mums felt they needed to get involved and say, not our babies what has been difficult for me to understand is, you know, when they are coming at the entire group, which i can tell you that, largely, we are not violent protesters. Further, the damage to property does not warrant what they are giving out, so, you know, what i would say is if they can be as militant and they can put together plans to attack a large body, why cant they do the same in an effort to get suppose that bad actors because i feel like that portland, as a whole, and black lives Matter Movement folks as a whole, are violent. I think we have been called terrorists. I mean, itsjust gotten out of hand with the way we are being portrayed and to be quite honest, it is a small handful of people doing these things. And most of the time the people that are being significantly harmed have nothing to do with damaging federal property, they have nothing to do with any type of violent behaviour, so i am just struggling to figure out their tactic and i would ask why not, why not get together and figure out how to deal with those folks as opposed to teargassing and being very volatile and violent with the entire movement. But with the spread of the coronavirus, it was decided the games should be postponed untiljuly next year. But as japan marks one extra year to go until the opening ceremony, there are an increasing number of people who doubt the tokyo games will now ever take place. From tokyo, Rupert Wingfield hayes reports. Tetsuya sotomura is one of japans best trampolinists. At beijing in 2008, hejust missed out on a medal. Now, at 35, tokyo 2020 was going to be his last hurrah but covid 19 has killed his dream. Back into 2008, if the beijing games would have been postponed by a year, i would have thought ok, he says, but it is another year to train, another year to grow. But now i am 35. A year feels like a very long time. Ive decided retirement is the only option. There is another reason why he is retiring. He thinks tokyos new Olympic Stadium may never get to hold an olympic opening ceremony, and hes not alone. A poll this week found only 23 of japanese support holding the games, even next year. By now, the buildings around me here should be bustling with thousands of athletes from all over the world, getting ready to compete against each other. Of course, because of covid 19, they are not here. This place remains a ghost town. But will it be any different a year from now . If covid 19 is still circulating widely, if there is not a vaccine, then how will it be possible to host an olympics in tokyo safely . From brazil to india, south africa to the United States, covid 19 infections are accelerating. Medical experts think there is little chance the pandemic will be over by next summer. If a very effective vaccine became available, that could be a game changer. Even with the lessening of the spread of the illness, thanks to vaccinations, still, it is more likely that the viral illness or pandemic will continue to occur by the year 2021. The olympics is supposed to be about bringing the world together but could tokyo be held without foreign spectators . Senior olympic Officials Say absolutely not. They have to decide if they want the games to go ahead and what are the risks and are they too severe . In which case, i thinkjapan will probably propose, and the ioc would probably accept, their cancellation. Last night inside the Olympic Stadium, they reset the clock, one year until the opening ceremony, maybe. Rupert wingfield hayes, bbc news. Hello there. For many parts of the country, friday will be a drier, brighter, and warmer day. For a while on thursday, the rain was actually quite heavy. It has since eased off, but there is still some cloud around in more southern parts of the uk. The next area of cloud is looming large in the atlantic, and that will bring some rain eventually. But for much of friday, we are in between two weather systems, and hence that drier theme. Eventually this next area of cloud and rain on those weather fronts will come into some western areas. But ahead of that, quite a range of temperatures a bit cooler in scotland where weve got clear skies, but quite a warm and muggy start for southern parts of england and wales. Theres more cloud around, and there may still be 1 2 showers around on friday. Still for a while, therell be some showers running into the far north of scotland, but elsewhere a lot of dry weather with some sunshine at times. It will cloud over in Northern Ireland from mid afternoon onwards, and well start to see some rain coming in from the west. But ahead of it, 18 celsius in Northern Ireland, a bit warmer in eastern scotland, widely in the 20s in england and wales, 25 26 celsius in the southeast of england. Now for the test match, its the third test match, england against the west indies at old trafford again. The first day looks like itll be dry. But over the weekend, we may have to dodge some rain. The weather is turning much more unsettled, particularly for saturday. Therell be some strong winds over weekend, warmer when the sun comes out but there may well be some heavy, perhaps thundery downpours. And well see some rain pushing its way eastwards on friday night into saturday to clear away. Then as it brightens and we get some sunshine, we introduce some more of those heavy, perhaps thundery showers with the chance of rain coming back into some southern and southeastern parts of england. Now the detail may change, but you cant really rely on any lengthy spells of dry weather on saturday, and temperatures will be 18 21 celsius and quite breezy, as well, staying that way into sunday. Perhaps some stronger winds arriving in the northwest of the uk closer to that area of low pressure. Thats where we will see most of the rain. Therell be some sunshine on sunday with some showers around too, more likely across northern and western areas, perhaps merging at times to give some longer spells of rain in scotland, particularly in the west. Temperatures on the whole may be a little bit lower for much of the country on sunday, but a drier day for eastern parts of england, and those temperatures may be a little bit higher. This is bbc news with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. Wall street falls as americas recovery stalls with a shock rise in jobless claims after 1a weeks of declines. Plus, the cover story face masks are now compulsory in shops in england but retailers worry about enforcing them. We start with the Economic Impact of the pandemic because despite the easing of lockdowns and travel restrictions in many parts of the world, weve been reminded the recovery could be a slow and patchy process. In the us, the number of people claiming Unemployment Benefits unexpectedly rose last week after 1a weeks of declines. That sent shares on wall street down sharply. In europe, there has been a fall in Consumer Confidence this month across the nations that share the euro despite expectations of an improvement. More on that in a moment but first Michelle Fleury reports from new york. In states where eviction rates are soaring, the recovery in the jobs market may be moving backwards. The rise in the number of people making claims after 1a consecutive weeks of decline suggest that more people are being laid off. In some cases for a second time. The efforts to reopen the economy after businesses shut down to try to contain the coronavirus, well, theyve been bumpy. In some states, new restrictions have been imposed on bars, restaurants and other businesses as coronavirus cases have gone up. The tens of millions of americans who are making a claim may soon see their benefits shrink, unless congress acts, extra benefit payments of 600 a week are set to expire at the end of the month. A moratorium on evictions is also due to expire. All of this means more Financial Hardship for those already hit by this crisis ramping up pressure on congress to pass another round of stimulus. Michelle fleury, bbc news, here in new york. George buckley is chief uk and euro area economist at the Investment Bank nomura. Lets start with the United States because it is a bit like a stark reminder isnt it that this is not going to be easy. Any sense that anything is going to start drifting back in the right direction was quickly disabused by that . Absolutely and of course the us congress is thinking about how it can provide additional stimulus. They havent agreed on that yet and it may take a bit longer and it may take a bit longer and may well be that some of the provisions in the previous fiscal support packages expire before they get around to that. I think the point to make about these jobless figures is that what we know from past experience is that the Labour Market is lagged. In other words, you see something happen to your economy and then it happens to the Labour Market with a lack of maybe a few weeks, months, or even quarters. I dont think it is perhaps too surprising that these figures have started to stabilise. I know they have risen a bit but i think there will be more stabilisation and thatis will be more stabilisation and that is the way to look at this. It probably also isnt surprising that they have gone up surprising that they have gone upa surprising that they have gone up a little bit because of what has been happening with the virus. We have of course seen other states in the south and the west of the americas start to see a pickup in the number of cases. And it is interesting isnt it if we come back to the side of the water as well. Every time there is a bit of a setback or another little spike somewhere, it clearly seems to dent most of our senses of confidence that we can get out and about and do the things we we re and about and do the things we were doing before. And yet we are still spending, arent we . Yes, andi are still spending, arent we . Yes, and i think that is the interesting thing here is when you look at retail sales for example, which we had data out about this morning. Both across europe and in the uk, they are down of course relative to where we were before the pandemic but they are not down as much as some of the other indicators. They may be done about 10 for example, that was in may. Thats not a bad number at all. What has happened of course is that people have not been able to go out shopping on the high street, they have been able to shop from pcs and ta blets able to shop from pcs and tablets and things. What they have done is switch bricks and mortar in favour of online sales and online sales went through the roof in mid april and may and were worth around a third of all retail during those months. So a big switch in behaviour. I have got to ask you about the brexit situation as well. Indications coming from michelle barnier, and the government, saying that there are chances of less than ideal, perhaps no do it all. Given the impact of coronavirus on the world and across europe and the uk, does it matter as it once perhaps did . I think the virus is obviously put the impact of brexit into some perspective. One may argue that it doesnt matter as much because we are already seeing a huge effect from the pandemic but equally so, ithink from the pandemic but equally so, i think we need to say this is going to have an extra shift to the economy if no deal is found. I think that is probably the way to look at this, that its yet another thing that the economy has to deal with at the start of next year which would be helpful if it didnt need to deal with that. I think a deal would clearly be very helpful to the uk economy. I think the ministers comments are probably to stimulate further discussions and encourage a deal to be had. I think we have got a bit of time left and these things tend to happen in these things tend to happen in the minute before midnight. I wouldnt be surprised if a deal was struck much nearer to the deadline than now. That is the reality of negotiation i guess. Thank you very much indeed, george, George Buckley therefrom nomura. A lot of books on his bookshelf there, arent they . Lets get an update now on the us Legal Proceedings against meng wanzhou the chief Financial Officer of chinese telecoms giant huawei. The us is trying to extradite herfrom canada on charges of breaking sanctions on iran. Here she is travelling to Court Earlier this year. In the last hour her lawyers have applied to have that extradition stopped. Sharanjit leyl is following this for us in singapore. Hello. That is right david. You pretty much that it. Those documents have just been released in the last hour also saying that Meng Wanzhous lawyers had essentially applied for stay of proceedings. What they are trying to do is to stop her extradition to the United States, and according to those documents the lawyers are saying there has been what they call a destruction of the integrity of the judicial process by us president donald trump, and senior members of his ministration. They accused the Trump Administration of using meng wa nzhou the Trump Administration of using meng wanzhou as a bargaining chip in a trade dispute. We know of course she was arrested in 2018 in december in vancouver on a warrant from United States. Us authorities accused her of bank fraud, of misleading hsbc about huaweis ties to a Company Operating in iran. And that essentially put hsbc at risk of fines and penalties for breaking us sanctions on tehran. All of this comes in the middle of the latest dramatic escalation of tensions between the note states and china. Wejust heard between the note states and china. We just heard from the us secretary of state mike pompeo taking fresh aim at china, saying washington and its allies must use all creative and assertive ways to press the Chinese Communist party to change its ways. Us chinese ties have deteriorated massively over issues ranging from the coronavirus pandemic, of course which began in china, beijings trade and business practices, and of course its claims in the south china sea, as well as its clampdown on hong kong. Certainly, interesting to see what the developments will be in this case. Absolutely, thank you very much indeed. Lets focus on the uk now because as of midnight its now compulsory to wear a Face Covering in shops in england. Failing to do so, could result in a 100 pound fine. Mine has got tractors and diggers on it because my sister centred to me and she thinks i am still seven years old. But i have to and i will wear it because if i dont i will get a fine. But its notjust shops. You now have to cover your mouth and nose in other enclosed public spaces, including banks, public transport hubs and takeaways. In some areas though, masks remain optional including restaurants and pubs, hairdressers, gyms and cinemas. In scotland, Face Coverings are already compulsory in shops, though not in wales, and from august Northern Ireland will run a Public Information campaign encouraging the use of Face Coverings, before deciding whether or not to make them mandatory. A bit ofa a bit of a mixed picture but a lot clearer now in england. Andrew goodacre is chief executive officer of the british independent retailers association. Andrew, thank you forjoining us. I guess clarity is a very useful thing for you to have here . Yes, it is and good morning. We would like to have had the absolute clarity earlier than yesterday of course. Because we have been trying to keep, certainly an independent retailer who is small and doesnt have the resources of a large chain, weve been working hard to keep them fully up to date with what they need to do. Ok, obviously i guess the key issue is for many shops and supermarkets and the like, apart from being ready to deal with this change, is how will you manage it, how are you police it . I think there is a message that is ultimately there is a responsibility for the police here but we have to be realistic. How are you going to do it, however shops going to do it, however shops going to do it . Well, what we will see in all shops are reminders to the consumer to wear facemasks. There are plenty of signs and there will be plenty of m essa 9 es there will be plenty of messages out there to remind people. I hope the government embarks on eight medications campaign as well to reinforce this message. This is a significant change in behaviour after also it will need all parties to play a role in that. Including the police as well need to reinforce the message on the consequences of not wearing a Face Covering. But can you imagine, lets be realistically, Police Standing up realistically, Police Standing up to realistically, Police Standing uptoa realistically, Police Standing up to a supermarket to deal with someone who has not got a mask on. I mean, that is that almost certainly not going to happen, is it . No, and i dont think anyone, that is going to be in any retailers thoughts. We dont expect to have Police Officers outside every store. I think what we were wanting and expecting and hoping for was a positive reinforcement of the rules from the relevant authorities just to make rules from the relevant authoritiesjust to make it clear to consumers that this is mandatory, these are not rules implied by the retailers, these are implied by the retailers, these a re rules implied by the retailers, these are rules being governed ultimately by the government and police authorities. And hopefully, and im sure that many, hopefully, and im sure that any hopefully, and im sure that many, many consumers, a high percentage, will see the sense in wearing Face Coverings and the need to do so. I guess itll be more important to our wonder not where once. Thank you forjoining us andrew. Partly a question of remembering to bring it with you as well, in the early days at least. Lets get some of the days other news. Walt disney has shelved the release of mulan the live action remake of the animated classic indefinitely. A rise in virus cases in the us and the impact globally on Film Production has forced the change. Its a blow for cinema operators hoping the movie might drive a late summer rebound in cinema going. Disney is also postponing its sequel to avatar until december 2022 and the next star wars movie until december 2023. Sheep farmers across the uk, and around the world, are facing a crisis after a slump in the price of wool because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Global Market for wool shut down at the end of february, as demand from clothing and carpet manufacturers collapsed. Wool uk, the marketing body for british sheep farmers, is sitting on millions of kilogrammes of unsold wool and many farmers are simply resorting to throwing fleeces away. Joe farren is ceo of british wool. Thanks very much indeed for joining us. Clearly you have got a crisis on your hands, and you are not getting access to some of the governments loan schemes, why is that . The Wool Industry has a terrible crisis on its hands at the moment, as you say, Global Markets for wool shut at the end of february, people werejust wool shut at the end of february, people were just not buying wool carpets, wool jackets, and have only very recently started to reopen at much lower volumes. And why its a terrible crisis for the textile industry is because wall, unfortunately, has been losing shares to synthetic fibres for decades, and quite naturally this has driven consolidation in the wool textile industry, which means that there are now in europe only a couple of players left, both the early stages of processing, washing, and yarn spinning, and the big losers in all of this have been the uk sheep farmer who was at the back of the chain supplying the raw material and his share of the price has getting smaller, and then down on top of that background, the industry has been suffering from brexit uncertainty, and in particular, the us china trade war has had a massive impact because china. So you are getting buffeted from every side but as you pointed out, this is a long term decline in a sense as well, when you look at other products, otherfabrics well, when you look at other products, other fabrics that are coming into play and competing with you. I note that there is a petition out, reddish wool for british insulation and carpeting. There a drive to build public sympathy and support for wool again, to basically get people to think, do buy will . Yes, wool is a high performing, totally environmentally friendly, biodegradable fibre. In these times of economic austerity, potentially coming down the road, in some ways we have to get back to the past. Wool products tend to cost a little bit more but they last much, much longer. They are high quality, they retain their appearance. They are what our pa rents appearance. They are what our parents and grandparents used and may be perhaps in some ways we need to go forwards, and we do, as you mentioned earlier in your introduction, the government could be helping, so we have, as the biggest seller of wool on behalf of uk sheep farmers, british will would apply but the government would not make us eligible, and the government could be specifying british wool products in all publicly funded buildings. Youve got to keep your foot to the floor and push for more help, that seems clear. Thank you very much indeed for joining us. Of course, the british wool market iconic but in trouble. The boss of one of the worlds biggest recruitment firms says learning new skills will be crucial in surviving a post pandemic jobs market. Alain dehaze who runs zurich based adecco says many firms are being forced to turn more of their business digital. And its vital that workers keep up if they want to remain employable. On the short term it is key because this covid 19 situation has accelerated the so called digitisation, though it means that companies are really accelerating the deployment of all these digital tools, and it is important that employees are catching up with this acceleration, acquiring the needed capabilities and in a number of cases they are digital capabilities. But mid term and long term, this wont stop, so you will see more and more automation, you will see more and more digitisation. People are losing around 40 of their skills every three years, so if you wa nt to every three years, so if you want to stay employable and attractive on the Labour Market, you will need permanently to up skill yourselves, and that is why everybody is speaking about lifelong learning. It is not because it is a nice word, it is because it is facing the reality that, in the future, starting from now, you need to permanently up skill and re skill yourself to stay attractive on the Labour Market. And viewers on bbc world news can see more of that interview with alain dehaze, the boss of recruitment giant adecco, on talking business with Aaron Heslehurst this weekend. The times are on your screen now with the first airing at 2330 gmt on saturday. Here in the uk, one of the first large scale Live Music Events held in doors since the coronavirus lockdown, has taken place at the london palladium. An audience of more than 640 people watched the singer Beverley Knight and her band perform. Our arts editor, Will Gompertz was at the show. A famous name in lights. Check. Security personnel in place. Check. Everybody wearing face masks. Check. Then let Beverley Knights show go on even though were in lockdown limbo, when everything is the same but also quite different. Im on the stage of the london palladium which is completely normal, albeit a huge space. What is unusual, though, about todays performance is the auditorium, which looks like that. Two thirds of the seats have got xs on, meaning you cant sit there, and that means that Beverley Knight is going to be performing to a few people and an awful lot of empty seats. I cant get no i cant get no. The singerfilled the room with her energy and her voice. The audience were definitely getting satisfaction. But it was also a bit odd. Like being at a party when youre the first to arrive. The atmosphere was, well, a little subdued. It was an odd experience at first. I walked onto the stage and in my minds eye, even though i knew it was a reduced capacity, i still thought there will be lots of faces. There was not lots of faces and there was lots of empty spaces and lots of xs and lots of masks. So you cant read peoples expressions, everybodys unsure. Am i allow to stand . Am i allowed to clap . What am i allowed to do . But i think between myself and the audience we found our way through in the end. So that is the performers experience. What about the audience . Fantastic. Amazing. It was just one of these things you could not miss. A bit of history. The atmosphere was incredible. When she started singing ijust started crying because it felt amazing to be back in a theatre. You cant beat the live experience. The real purpose of todays show was not so much to entertain but to experiment. A first step in getting audiences safely back into theatres. Will gompertz, bbc news. The show can go on. State schools in south africa are going to close from four weeks and monday as part of measures to combat a search and coronavirus there. South africa has the fifth highest number of coronavirus cases in the world and the highest in africa. A record 572 deaths were recorded in the last 2a hours, but even with these figures, local research now suggests that the number of coronavirus deaths may be going underreported. Researchers from south africas medical Research Council say the figures for natural death are much higher than usual. They have been tracking overall deaths across the country for the past ten weeks and have found that 17,000 more people have died thanis 17,000 more people have died than is usual for this time of the year. Now, this does not mean that all of these are covid 19 related deaths, but Health Experts are worried that a significant number of those unidentified depth may be from the virus. One explanation they give is that some people have died at home without ever being tested. The countrys hospitals are overwhelmed. Many have reported Staff Shortages of hundreds of Health Workers have although dominic also contracted the disease. This means that while more people will be needing hospital care over the next few weeks, there are now even fewer hands to help, which could affect the quality of healthcare they get and place lives at risk. But there is also concerned that south africans are staying away from hospitals because of their of catching the virus. That could mean that other potentially life threatening illnesses are not being treated. Meanwhile, authorities are pleading with south africans to continue following the Health Advice of experts on how to slow down the spread of the virus. They are worried that too many people are now going about life as usual, a complacency that could prove deadly. And there you are, you are bang up to date, thanks for watching bbc news. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Our headlines today Face Coverings become mandatory in shops, banks and take aways in england breaking the rules could mean a £100 fine.
