Charity finds one in Saeed Mohammed Al Naboodah Group Trophy Handicap to have been bullied. And a light show and the Southern Hemisphere. Good morning. Welcome to bbc newsroom live. A huge car bomb in the Afghanistan Capital Kabul has killed at least 80 people and injured over 350. The huge explosion happened in the Diplomatic Quarter of the city near the French Embassy during morning rush hour. Our correspondent Harun Najafizada is at the scene and sent this report. This is the scene of the huge bombing which rocked the Afghan Capital kabul. Today we understand it was a water tanker or a lorry full of explosives which hated this strategic location right in the heart of kabul. It is very close to the german embassy, the indian embassy, the french and british embassies. It is also walking distance from the provincial palace. The police have cordoned off the area at the moment and we are not allowed to move further than this for several reasons. One of them is that there might be another Attack Waiting to be carried out. We understand at least 80 people have been killed, up to 400 others are hurt. Some of them are very seriously. They have been taken to hospitals across the capital and they are being treated. The president has called it and act against humanity. No group has yet taken responsibility for the deadliest attack i have ever seen for the past 15 years or so. But we understand the taliban and other militant groups have increased their activities across afghanistan recently. With just over a week to go until the general election, the main parties are returning to their key election themes, ahead of tonights all party live tv Election Debate, which will be held on bbc one at 7. 30pm. Theresa may has accused labour of wanting uncontrolled migration, which she says depresses wages for low income workers Jeremy Corbyn has spoken about what he sees as the impact of five more years of conservative government on the nhs and education. The Liberal Democrats have called for a cross Party Approach to dealing with the long term future of social care funding. With just over a week to go until the polls open these last few days of campaigning could prove to be crucial. We can speak to vickyjung who is in somerset with the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is in the south west today, up until now she has visited what you would call labour marginal seats, here in the south west its a different story. This is where the conservatives beat the Liberal Democrats, drove them out of the south west. Today she has already visited plymouth and she has come to an agricultural show here in somerset where they are hoping to hold onto seats gained last time around. Her theme today is going on the attack, talking about brexit, she wants people to think about is carrying out those negotiations. The conservatives thank the labour party is weak when it comes to their message on immigration. We know Jeremy Corbyn has been asked about this, as did he thought numbers would come down when they left the eu, he has refused to put a figure on it. Today theresa may said this showed the party was weak on the issue. There is a clear choice, a clear difference between myself and Jeremy Corbyn and the labour party. I want to ensure we are controlling migration because too high, uncontrolled migration puts pressure on our uncontrolled migration puts pressure on our Public Services but also lowers wages at the lower end of the income scale. I want to ensure we control migration, Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party Want uncontrolled migration. Theresa may feels many other people who voted for brexit did so because they were concerned about immigration. Her opponents will turn around and say you have been Home Secretary for the last six yea rs, been Home Secretary for the last six years, you had a pledge which has been repeated time and again to bring migration down, Net Migration down to the Tens Of Thousands and thats completely failed. The latest figures around 250,000. The conservatives have chosen to keep that pledge in their manifesto but many have said how can you deliver that giving you have not before and given that you have allowed non eu migration, which this country is allowed to control, you have allowed that to rise as well. Thanks very much. Lets cross to westminster to talk to our assistant Political Editor norman smith. A week tomorrow we will be going to the polls and the parties trying to defined what the key issue is the one focused on. The parties are trying to focus on their core issues, those they believe resonate with their supporters, trying to motivate them and get them to come out and vote. We are not seeing new policies, more a reiteration of existing positions on the core issues. Today for example we have labour producing this Document Setting out what they say is a threat to the nhs and social care from another five years of conservative government suggesting there will be Something Like five and a half Million People on Hospital Waiting Lists in five yea rs Hospital Waiting Lists in five years time and on social care there will be around 1,000,000 and a half people with unmet needs. Labour will plough in Something Like £37 billion into the nhs and 8 billion into social care are to try to alleviate the pressure. Labour are trying to make this is not about brexit but Public Services. This was the Labour Leader this morning. Labour will invest in our people, schools and hospitals. We will cut class sizes, not schools. Take a Million People of the nhs waiting lists, not add millions more. Ensure people get the care they deserve. And guaranteed the dedicated staff are paid. Another five years of the conservatives would be disastrous for our Public Services. If they carry on as they are now then by 2022 there could be 5. 5 Million People on the nhs england waiting lists. 1. 5 million older people with unmet care needs. 650,000 pupils crammed into primary classes of over 30. It is worth stressing the Institute For Fiscal Studies very highly regarded fiscal watchdog that they are, has suggested none of the Political Parties are putting in nearly enough given the pressures on the nhs. They calculate that because we are an ageing population we need about a four percent increase in funding every year. The tories are proposing about 1 , the lib dems a bit more than that and labourjust over 2 , not meeting what they say is necessary to cater for the pressures facing the Health Service. Also interesting as well on immigration, and issued theresa may is wanting to focus more on, again no real clear answers from the parties this morning, theresa may areJeremy Corbyn not parties this morning, theresa may are Jeremy Corbyn not setting parties this morning, theresa may areJeremy Corbyn not setting out in any detail what we will do once we leave the eu and freedom of Movement Comes to an end. Thank you norman. And you can see the debate live at 730 pm on and Bbc News Channel. Police investigating last weeks manchester terror attack in which 22 people died now believe the Suicide Bomber salman abedi bought most of the components for the bomb himself. Three men arrested in the wake of the atrocity were released without charge yesterday. Detectives are still questioning 11 people to try to find out whether abedi had help in carrying out the attack. Meanwhile, rehearsals have begun for a Benefit Concert in manchester on sunday, which will see Ariana Grande return to perform in the city less than a fortnight after the bombing. The line up also includes katy perry, justin beiber, coldplay and take that. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow at 10am, and the proceeds will go to the we love manchester emergency fund, which has been set up to support those injured or bereaved by the attack. Our Entertainment Correspondent Colin Paterson reports. Music liam gallagher, back in manchester, back on stage, looking back to the events last week. 22 candles lined up in front of the drum kit, one for each person killed in the terrorist attack, and it did not take him long to issue a defiant statement. Normal business has resumed cheering what made this gig different was the singing between the songs, the audience spontaneously bursting into chanting, stand up for the 22. This was one of manchesters biggest music stars returning home to deliver a set including oasis classics like live forever, rock and roll star, one song noticeable by its absence, the one that has become an anthem for unity over the last week dont look back in anger. But then it was noel who sang that. Liam did not sing it, but the fans did. Staying behind inside the venue long after the show ended. Dont look back in anger, i heard you say. You can feel the heart of the people, it was so emotional. Ive felt this is exactly what manchester needed. An Oasis Reunion was always highly unlikely but it surprised many that Noel Gallagher is not on the line up for the fundraising show this sunday, could he be a surprise on the day or perhaps join coldplay for a version of the song which has become the soundtrack to a city trying to move on . Colin paterson, bbc news. Manchester. Lets go to fiona trott at the Old Trafford Stadium where the concert will take place, a significant moment for the city . Thats right, of course, whilst this happens investigation is continuing, Greater Manchester Police Telling us three people have been released but at the same time they believe that salman abedi bought Bomb Making Equipment by himself and that many of his actions were carried out alone. But they cannot rule out he was part of a wider network. The Detective Chief Superintendent have said they are examining his movements on cctv, interactions he had with people in phone calls, and said it is vital that police make sure he is not part ofa that police make sure he is not part of a wider network. There are still a number of things which concern them, they want to find out why he kept going back to the Wilmslow Road area of the city and the blue suitcase, pictures we have seen, they are still keen to trace it to find out if it has any dna from others which may help them as part of the investigation. 11 people still in custody, they are going through 7000 entries on the police log, analysing 300 pieces of digital equipment. 18 sites around the city are being guarded by 180 police officers, they are being frantically examines and 18 armed response vehicles are working around the city 24 7. Proceeds will go to the fund set up to help those briefed and injured, whats the latest on those injured, whats the latest on those injured and the support they may require . Its going towards a fund set up by the British Red Cross and also Manchester City council, mixed reactions to the Concert Happening so soon. The Chief Constable of Greater Manchester police told us the majority of the families affected were in favour of the Concert Happening. Some people understandably not keen for it to go ahead. Its also a huge logistical challenge for Greater Manchester police but one they say they can meet. Around 50,000 people expected here on sunday, around the corner at Manchester United around 60,000 expected for Michael Carricks testimonial. Greater Manchester Police have been working with both teams to make sure both events can go ahead, that is why the testimonial will be kicking off earlier this weekend. Its a huge logistical challenge, officers from northumbria, staffordshire, nottinghamshire all being brought in to help. We spoke to someone from the Organising Team and they said its probably the hardest task they have undertaken, eight and a half days to put everything together but they are all pulling in the same direction to make it work. He said it was incredible and that sentiment was echoed by the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester police, they were determined both events would take place on sunday, the Chief Constable saying that, so that people around here can once again show their support. An update on the headlines, a huge car bomb in kabul kills 80 people and injured more than 350 others. Theresa may accuses labour of wanting uncontrolled immigration, Jeremy Corbyn says the country needs skilled migrants to work on the nhs but promises to manage numbers. A prisoner believed to be armed with a razor blade is on the run after overpowering Prison Officers in wiltshire. And in sport its official Arsene Wenger has officially signed a new two Year Contract to remain as Arsenal Manager until 2019. The contract does not include a break clause and will extend his reign to 23 years. More reaction to that coming up. And they face a gruelling schedule over the next few weeks but British And Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland said his players cannot afford to adopt and negative mindset. The squad has arrived in auckland ahead of the ten match tour of new zealand. And Petra Kvitova is a set down in the latest match of her comeback after being injured in a knife attack. She trills Bethanie Mattek sands at the french open. Michael kisiel, who is 30 had been taken to hospital with a head injury before overpowering guards yesterday evening. He is originally from poland but committed his offences in luton. Police are using a drone in their search for him, warning the public not to approach him. Our correspondent andy moores been following the story hes with me now. Tell us about him and what he was inside for . This story becomes more worrying and concerning as we find out more, initially we thought simply he escaped from his guards in some way but now we hear he actually overpowered them. We dont know how many guards were with him, he escaped with a razor blade. We are discovering more about his history, the police nor the Ministry Of Justice would comment but we have records from the Crown Prosecution Service that show he was jailed in luton for more than five years last year because he held, he tied up a mother and her daughter and subjected them to what the judge called a terrifying ordeal for more than eight hours. He held a large Kitchen Knife to the throat of the mother and threatened to kill her and both of them feared for their life for quite a long time. That is why he was in jail. The life for quite a long time. That is why he was injail. The hunt for him involves police dogs and helicopters, it involves a drone. We are now hearing from the police that it may have been a preplanned in some way, he may have had help. Bedfordshire police are also putting out an alert for him, he came from the luton area so it is possible he is heading back. Do you know the detail of the area of the search is banning . The initial search concentrated in the initial area because he escaped in his prison close, the not have any money or a mobile phone so unless he was hitchhiking he could not have got far. But if he did have help outside then of course that means there is a different perspective. He could be quite a Long Distance from salisbury by now. A description which is very important of course, described as white, five tall with blonde hair, medium build with tattoo is, distinctive tattoos on his neck. At the time of his escape he was wearing grey Tracksuit Bottoms and a black t shirt with blue trainers. He had a head wound, he was initially found in his prison cell with the headwind. We now dont know of that was self inflicted in order to get himself to hospital but he still has the headwind so that should be distinctive as well. Lets look at some of todays other developing stories. The nhs could see its costs rise by an extra half a billion pounds a year, if british pensioners living in other eu countries have to return home for treatment after brexit. Thats the warning from the health care thinktank, the Nuffield Trust, which says that unless a deal can be reached to let ex pat pensioners continue to receive care abroad as they do at the moment, the nhs will have to foot the bill. Sarah corker reports. For many british pensioners it is the appeal of retirement in the sunshine that attracts them to move to countries like spain or france. But having the same Health Care Rights as the locals is an important perk. Its part of a reciprocal scheme which the uk pays around £500 million a year for. That covers nearly 200,000 british expatriates living out their retirement in the eu. But its a deal potentially under threat when brexit happens, according to the Nuffield Trust. People, if they had to return from countries where they live in the eu to here, retired people, could cost the nhs more money. Beyond that we probably would need more hospital beds and more nurses to give those people the standards of care they require. Unless a deal is struck the trust says pensioners would lose their free health care. If they all return to britain for treatment it could cost the nhs £1 billion a year. Last year, spending on the nhs in england was around £102 billion. The Nuffield Trust estimates the nhs would need around 1600 more doctors, nurses, and other workers to provide this care. In response, the Conservative Party say protecting the rights of uk nationals in the eu is one of their priorities for the brexit negotiations. But the Liberal Democrats say this report is evidence that theresa mays extreme version of brexit will be a disaster for the nhs, putting huge pressure on hospitals. Labour are yet to comment but have previously accused the conservatives of starving the nhs. Sarah corker, bbc news. A 30 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, after the bodies of a woman and two children were discovered in a flat in liverpool. A far reaching inquiry into historical allegations of abuse, of children in care in scotland will begin hearing evidence today. The first phase of the scottish child abuse inquiry will hear evidence from faith based organisations and residential and foster care providers. Our correspondent james shaw is in glasgow for us. One of the biggest public enquiry is there has ever been held in scotland, the first public sessions started this morning with the chairwoman lady smith laying out her remit, acknowledging that there was great concern about child abuse in scotla nd great concern about child abuse in scotland and also paying tribute to victims, many of whom are contributing to this enquiry, giving witness statements and evidence in the hearing as well. Ladysmith has gotan the hearing as well. Ladysmith has got an enormous remit in front of her, all abuse of all kinds in residential settings and schools, which can include Public Schools, well non Public Schools in scotland, all residential institutions, faith based ones and foster care as well. And reaching back as far as the living memory of victims so thats clearly a very long stretch of time. An enormous amount of evidence to ta ke an enormous amount of evidence to take account of, to produce a report. We expect that in just over two yea rs report. We expect that in just over two years time. But there has already been criticism of this enquiry, the original chairwoman resigned claiming there was interference from the scottish government. They have denied that and said they want a robust and independent enquiry. And there is also concern its restricted only to residential settings so for example a schools and other settings where children are in care are not covered by this enquiry. But it will carry on gathering evidence and we expect a report towards the end of 2019. Huge amount of evidence to get through, how many alleged victim is expected to give evidence . Through, how many alleged victim is expected to give evidence . M through, how many alleged victim is expected to give evidence . It will bea expected to give evidence . It will be a significant number but we do not know the total yet. We also know a number of victims have already given statements and ladysmith said this morning she still wanted to see from more witnesses as well, more survivors, people who suffered abuse when they were children. The only the restriction is that any abuse since the enquiry was instituted cannot be covered but any abuse before that can be included. Thank you james. Stargazers in australia and new zealand have been treated to and new zealand have been treated to a spectacular show as the Southern White swept across the continent, it is caused by solar winds, particles escaping the sun interacting with the Magnetic Field of earth and the atmosphere. For most of us but very hit and miss. For most of us it will stay dry with warm sunny spells, tempers guesting 17 19d in the north, 23 degrees further south and east. Going into this evening the showers will fade away, the breeze picking up across North Western areas, not as cold as last night, temperatures 13 16dc, down to single figures here last night. Through thursday that rain across Northern Ireland will edge its way into scotland, drive from most of england and wales with sunny spells and feeling warm again, quite humid in the south east, maximum temperature is 23 25. This is bbc newsroom live. The headlines at 11. 30am a Car Bomb Attack in kabul kills at least 80 people and injured more than 350 others. The huge Explosion Hit the Diplomatic Quarter during the morning rush hour several embassies, including the french and german missions, were damaged. League1 league 1 of a tory risk to the nhs and theresa may accuses labour of wanting uncontrolled migration. The lib dems call for a cross Party Approach on social care funding. Police investigating last weeks manchester terror attack died now believe the Suicide Bomber bought most of the components for the bomb himself. Police hunting for a prisoner on the run say his escape could have been preplanned. He is thought to be armed with a razor blade and overpowered his guards at the hospital last night. Letsjoin lets join holly letsjoin holly for a lets join holly for a sports update. Its official Arsene Wenger has officially signed a new two Year Contract to remain as Arsenal Manager until 2019. The contract doesnt include a break clause and will extend his reign to 23 years. This well have more reaction to that later. Is to that later. What are we expecting him to say today . Is what are we expecting him to say today . Well, i dont think Arsene Wenger will want to touch much on what has gone before. Of course, he may point out that it was a difficult season and that not everybody was happy among them the manager, staff and the players themselves, but now it will be all about looking for words and how arsenal can reduce the 18 point gap. They fell behind champions chelsea in the premier League Last Season and also how they can pursue their stated target, which is to challenge for the Premier League title, the Champions League, get back into the Champions League, get back into the Champions League, get back into the Champions League of course. They have only won the fa cup in recent yea rs. Have only won the fa cup in recent years. So i think it will be very positive. I think the statement will aim to encourage everybody to unite, the fans especially after the protests you seen this season. There we re protests you seen this season. There were planes flying over some grounds, banners within grounds and outside. There were marches here at the Emirates Stadium when fans wa nted the Emirates Stadium when fans wanted Arsene Wenger to leave, but he will stay. He has physically this morning signed a two Year Contract extension. As you say, it does not include a break clause and he will be the manager of arsenal until 2019. There is no guarantee that he will not sign another contract on top of that. I think arsenal and Arsene Wenger himself are open minded on that as things stand but that will depend on how the next two years ago. Looking ahead to the next two years, how important is it for the Arsenal Board to now back Arsene Wenger and the Transfer Window, bearing in mind they need to regain their place in the top four . It is hugely important. It is my understanding that there was a split in the board over whether Arsene Wenger should stay or go, but that does not really matter because the most important man, the only man with any real power is the owner. He has supported Arsene Wenger wholeheartedly. He has reiterated his support and he will hand in all of these everything he needs to challenge for these trophies. I understand they could spend as much as £150 million on transfers this summer, but they do also have to consider whether they can pay the wages. Arsenals wage bill is very high and their revenues are relatively flat compared to the likes of Manchester United, real madrid and barcelona. They are also now out of the Champions League, so will they be able to attract players toa will they be able to attract players to a club that is playing in the Europa League, but arsenal now need to win and they need to spend this summer. We shall wait and see. Interesting, for the moment. Thank you very much. They face a gruelling schedule over the next few weeks but British And Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland says his players cant afford to adopt a negative mindset. The squads now arrived in auckland ahead of their 10 match tour of new zealand. These are the views of the my clients coach. For people to Start Talking about it now, it seems a bit ironic because they will have been well aware of it and how tough it is. You cant dwell on it. You cant change it. So if you let negativity in terms of thinking about those sorts of things worry you, it is going to influence the team and it is what it is. And we are excited about it. We are looking forward to it. The thing about the schedule, it is tough, but some of these tough games we will have nice Preparation Form four. This Tennis Player lost on a tie break and is 3 1 down in the second set. That is all of your sport for now. More now on the general election. We can cross to berkshire where Labour LeaderJeremy Corbyn is making a Campaign Speech. And dan johnson is and danjohnson is there waiting for him. What is the message today . It is all about immigration, is it . Well, yes. Jeremy corbyn has been challenged on that Immigration Theme because of that leaked report this morning that suggested some of his team, some of his researchers have been discussing giving out visas for unskilled eu migrants. That is something that the conservatives have seized on, Accusing Labour of supporting mass unskilled immigration. But was not whatJeremy Corbyn wanted his message today to be about. He wanted to get back to court labour issues, talking about class sizes, about overcrowding in accident and emergency at what he calls the social care crisis and how labour wants to address those issues. He is time to get back on the front foot after that started yesterday when he forgot those numbers during that interview yesterday. He is due to address a crowd of hundreds of people here at a Leisure Centre in bedding. Lots of people including young adults here waiting to hear his speech. Labour jeremy waiting to hear his speech. Labour Jeremy Corbyn has refused to get into discussion about the polls, that times poll which suggested we may be on target for a Hung Parliament and he may have the chance to form a coalition and that is something Jeremy Corbyn will not engage in discussion of. He said that he needed to get out and talk more to real people because he was pushing for a full on labour victory. Thank you, dan. We will be back with you as soon asJeremy Corbyn starts to speak. We have been hearing a huge car bomb has exploded in the Afghan Capital, kabul. Killing at least 350. Wounding at least 350. With me is the bbcs afg ha n least 350. With me is the bbcs Afghan Service editor, who has been following the story. What is the latest and who may be behind it . As you said, this is one of the biggest Attacks Kabul has experienced so far. A truck bomb killed 18 people and wounded 350 and we understand this figure might change, u nfortu nately, this figure might change, unfortunately, as it has been rising and changing since the incident happened. The taliban have distanced themselves from the attack and said it wasnt their work and they have condemned it. But looking back at the history of such attacks, whenever there are heavy civilian casualties, no one claims responsibility for the attack and the taliban immediately say it is not their work. But similar attacks with the same hallmarks, dropped bombs, Suicide Attacks, or if there are bombs, Suicide Attacks, or if there a re less bombs, Suicide Attacks, or if there are less civilian casualties and the target they are going out is it, then they do claim the attack. It is very difficult to say who was behind the attack because is, which has recently stepped up their attacks on afghanistan, they have not said anything so far if it is their work. But at least the taliban have distanced themselves, but gained that does not necessarily mean they we re that does not necessarily mean they were not behind it. We have learned that for bbc journalists were not behind it. We have learned that for bbcjournalists were injured in this attack and the driver of the team was killed in the attack. Yes, i got a call today in the morning and i was awoken by the very sad news that we lost one of our team members in a kabul, very sad news that we lost one of ourteam members in a kabul, a driver, a very decent soul, father of four, we lost him in this attack and for bbc colleagues were wounded. The attack happened in a very secure area in kabul on a route that is taken by at least half a dozen government and non Government Employees who go to this area every day. And people who were commuting we re day. And people who were commuting were caught in this area. And that happened during rush hour, at 8 30am in the morning and most of the casualties are civilians including women and children. What is the Security Picture been . I mean, obviously this is a particularly devastating and huge attack but what has the picture been up until now . Well, like most Suicide Attacks are attacks of this kind, in the immediate aftermath, the city becomes heavily militarised, there are Police Deployed everywhere, the city goes quiet. But again, it is very difficult to defend such moves because the more Security Measures that you take the more the insurgents find new ways of attacking. Such attacks have been difficult to prevent totally, even in the most secure cities in the world, including the united kingdom. And afghanistan, which is at work for the past 38 years, i think this will not be the last attack. And it happened in the diplomatic area. The area where the attack happened, it is named the green zone, meaning that the area is heavily fortified, there are embassies, diplomatic conclaves, it is also another name given to this area. There are a gates. The kozza checked, ids are checked, but still the insurgents find new ways of using the vehicles that usually commutes to this area, making fake ids and all of the security in this area was particularly strict. Everybody would have been checked. But that is where they managed to get in. At least they managed to get in. At least they went through the First Security check when the explosion happened. When that happens, it leads to questions of is there some sort of Insider Involvement. Is that something that is considered . One cannot really roll out Insider Involvement or insider help in such attacks, but that is not absolutely necessary to carry out similar attacks. In the past, we have had attacks. In the past, we have had attacks of this kind without any insider help. Sometimes it has been negligence, like in the past attack that we had at the military hospital, ten Military Officers including three generals were sentenced from one to two years in prison but that was not for helping the insurgents, that was for not doing theirjob properly, for failing to prevent the attack. So insider attack cannot be ruled out. That does not necessarily mean that it has been there. Thank you. Abuse and bullying in the Online Gaming world is a growing problem according to new research from anti bullying charity, ditch the label. Of the 2,500 gamers they surveyed, half had been harassed or received threats. Heres our Technology Correspondent rory cellan jones. For 16 year old bailey, video games have been a big part of his life and were once an escape when he was getting a hard time at school. He enjoys pitting his skills against other players online, but what he doesnt like is the abuse he sometimes gets while playing. He first experienced bullying in games when he was ten and its not getting any better. If im playing a game and i score a goal, ive literally been told to kill myself. If youre being bullied at school, you come home and play your computer and you are just getting more abuse thrown at you. Its just going to put you off doing anything social. The Charity Ditch The Label surveyed 2,500 young gamers. 57 said they had been subjected to hate speech in an online game. 47 had received threats and 40 had had unwanted sexual contact. Whats changed over the last decade is that more and more games are played online and that means young gamers are encountering anonymous people from Around The World and chatting with them. That can, of course, be very positive, but it also lays them open for the kind of dangers weve seen elsewhere in the online world. The anti bullying charity worked with the online game habbo hotel to Research Young gamers experiences. And was disturbed by what it found. I think whats so shocking is the fact that its normalised behaviour. We had gamers telling us this was just part of playing games online. Bailey says he has now learned not to let abuse get to him, but he wants the Games Companies to do more to watch over what happens online and to act to stop the bullies. Rory cellan jones, bbc news. I dont think there are many. Every system is open to abuse but until i was actually in that situation myself, physically freezing, starving, heating turned off, not eating for three days in a row, trying to kill myself and my bottom because i did not want to carry on. I think flat rates of tax are better because it lets you work in the city and you worked really hard. If you have to pay for a tax bracket, it is as though the government are punishing you for doing well. Dont you think we all just need a certain amount to live on, though . I think in this country, if you work hard, you arent. Do you agree . No. You dont agree that if you work hard in this country . No, loads of people are working hard, cleaning shops, cleaning trains. I also know people who got the job through Family Connections who swan around drinking and private members clu bs around drinking and private members clubs drinking day in and day out. That is such a stereotype. No, i know these people. Why should the system pay when this person is born into a banking role be earning three times as much . I have such a nice time, weirdly. I have such a lovely time. Idid time, weirdly. I have such a lovely time. I did not know what to expect. I was super time. I did not know what to expect. I was super nervous. Time. I did not know what to expect. I was super nervous. I have a new left wing friend. A little lefty. You said if you think that hit home a little bit because i had not given many things you brought up much thought, so it was quite thought provoking for me. I think often you can be quite ignorant, politically i think and i think i am very guilty of that. I have friends who are quite conservative but they tend to be a lot older. They are like my nan and herfriends. This was in the 70s and 80s, so it is quite nice for me to meet a young person with real conservative views. Yeah. You can see the full version of that on the bbc news website, and there will be two more blind dates later this week on the Victoria Derbyshire programme on bbc two and tear on the Bbc News Channel tomorrow and on friday morning from nine a. M. For the first time, a British Police force is to recruit people directly to become detectives without them having to first work as uniformed officers. The metropolitan police hopes the scheme will fill some of the 600 Detective Vacancies in the force, and attract people with different skills and backgrounds who might not otherwise want to join. With me is our Home Affairs Correspondent danny shaw. Sounds really interesting. What background does someone have to have two apply for one of these . Well, you need to have a degree. As long as you are under the age of 57 and you have lived in london for three Out Of The Past six years, you can apply. But it does not stop there because there is a very rigorous and intensive assessment and training programme. Recruits would have to undergo 18 weeks of training. They then have to pass an exam after a year. They would be effectively on probation for two years before they area probation for two years before they are a fully fledged detective co nsta bles, are a fully fledged detective constables, but the key difference here is that people recruited into Detective Roles wont have to spend any time in Police Uniform, pounding the streets doing street patrol, response work. The kinds of things that traditionally every Single Police officer had to do. They had to spend some time in uniform, whether it is two or three or four or five years, before whether it is two or three or four orfive years, before moving into detective work. They will not have to do that. It will be focused on cid and investigative work right from the outset. Why are they doing it . For two reasons. From the outset. Why are they doing it . Fortwo reasons. Firstly, from the outset. Why are they doing it . For two reasons. Firstly, there isa it . For two reasons. Firstly, there is a shortfall of detectives across england and wales the inspectorate Co Nsta Bula Ry england and wales the inspectorate constabulary says there is a National Crisis because there are so many vacancies. But they are also doing it because they want to increase the diversity of people coming into the police and the expertise that they can get. There are some people who are attracted to the idea of working for the police, of doing investigative work and feel they have the skills and expertise, but they dont want to put on a Police Uniform and spent time on the streets. That doesnt appeal to them. So i think this is a route for people who want to be investigators and dont want to do the uniform work. And so hopefully it will widen the pool, they believe, why did the diversity of people coming into the met. We will see what happens and whether it gets rolled out. This will be 480 or some recruits. There will be 480 or some recruits. There will probably be another scheme and either forces are either planning similar things are watching this experiment very carefully. Thank you. Ina experiment very carefully. Thank you. In a moment, we will have a summary of the Business News, but first an update of our headlines. A huge car bomb in the Afghan Capitals Diplomatic Quarter has 80 people and injured more than 350 others. Theresa may accuses labour of wanting uncontrolled immigration. Jeremy corbyn says the country needs skilled migrants to work in the nhs, but promises to manage their numbers. A prisoner believed to be armed with a razor blade is on the run armed with a razor blade is on the ru n after armed with a razor blade is on the run after overpowering Prison Officers in rochdale. In the Business News the pound has fallen more than half a percent against the dollar after one new poll suggests the Conservative Party could fall short of an overall majority in next months general election. Previous polls suggest Prime Minister theresa may would massively increase a conservative majority. And when the pounds down, the ftse is usually up. Today is no exception. Thats because a weak pound makes earnings at ftse100 firms look better theyre usually reported in dollars. The ftse 100 is currently up xx . The ftse100 is currently up 0. 4 . And food prices are rising at the fastest rate for more than three years, according to the British Retail Consortium. At the same time, the uk exported a Record Amount of food and drink. Those exports rose by 8. 3 over the year to £4. 9bn the largest First Quarter figure on record. Thats down to better overseas promotion and the weaker pound. And well stay with that food and drink story because after years of price wars between our largest supermarkets, all vying for our custom, prices are starting to rise. The British Retail Consortium measured the prices of 500 everyday goods and found Food Inflation was 1. 4 during the month, up from 0. 9 in april. So what does it mean for our Household Incomes . Lets speak to rachel lund, head of Retail Insight analytics at the British Retail Consortium. Very good morning to you. Nice to see you. So just explain this for us. But prices going back up. They have been falling for a long time, but overall the picture is one of prices falling. Yes, so what were seeing is food prices going up about 1. 4 compared to last year. At the same time, you have non food prices still firmly in deflation. So when we talk about the pressures both upwards and downwards, talk to me about why prices for food rising first of all. There are two big factors feeding into food prices. Firstly, commodity prices. So according to the un, World Food Prices are up some 15 on the same time last year. And we have also got the impact of the pound devaluation, which has fallen 30 sincejune last year. And both of those things make the cost of the underlying goods more expensive and the retailers are having to albeit only to a small extent pass them onto consumers. And lets talk about why prices are falling for everything else, because that will be the bit that we will probably feel some benefit from and is that enough to offset the food prices . Nonfood prices are falling on average, and that is partly because of very strong competition in the non food sector and you get retailers implementing lots of promotions in order to sell to customers. The fact is, those prices are beginning to head upwards, but because we had four years of shop price deflation, those prices still appeared to be down on last year. 0k. It is appeared to be down on last year. Ok. It is good to talk to you, rachel. Thanks very much. That is all from me. More later. Thank you very much. Let me bring you some breaking news on the sentencing of the surgeon convicted of carrying out a series of unnecessary Breast Operations. He was found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent and three counts of Unlawful Wounding with intent against ten private patients by a jury last month. He is currently being sentenced and in sentencing the judge has been going through the victims statements. He has told ian patterson, you carried out surgery which you knew was unnecessary. Ian paterson has been shaking his head in response. He is sitting too close to the victims in court and victims state m e nts to the victims in court and victims statements are being read out. The judge told him, you deliberately exaggerated the risk that patients would develop cancer. The reality was that there was little if any need for continued surveillance or the surgery or procedures. So the judges speaking in court ahead of actually delivering the sentence. We will bring you the details of it as soon as it comes through. Lets get more on the general election. We can go to riding. The Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn is making a Campaign Speech. We can listen. We have a programme and a manifesto for the many, not the few. And it is a carefully worked out programme. It isa carefully worked out programme. It is a realistic programme. And it is a fully costed programme. And it will cost, yes, more in taxation at the top end. Corporation tax will go up the top end. Corporation tax will go upa bit. The top end. Corporation tax will go up a bit. And all those tax reliefs and give aways to the very rich will change. And we are doing this because we believe it is time for a change in this country. We cannot go on with the narrative that the next generation is always going to be worse off than this generation. You will have less health care, less housing, less in education, you will pay for more and more and more as you go through life. Ijust dont accept that is correct. We are a wealthy country. We live in a highly technical age. We live in an age when almost anything is possible, if you get the politics right to distribute the wealth and the opportunity fairly across all elements of society. But in this country, we are not doing any of that. And so angela very proudly put forward her views and our plan on education, and i have to say i am very ploughed proud of her. She had a difficult upbringing did not achieve everything she wanted to or could have done at school, and as she says, she was helped to achieve in life bites sure art, that was introduced by the last Labour Government. And angela totally values education and the opportunities that it gets for everyone. opportunities that it gets for everyone. Helped by sure start. And so we have put forward our plans. Firstly, 30 hours per week Free Childcare for two to four year olds for the whole country. And that preschool Nursery Places, social interaction, play, is something that is so important, bringing children together, all of them, for those places, and it will be paid for and it will cost £4. 8 billion extra to do it, but i see it as absolutely right to do that because it is an investment in the futures of those children and indeed of all of us. Because children that dont get those Nursery Places dont get those good preschool facilities sadly are likely to achieve less when they go on to Primary School, less in secondary, and less likely to get to university. I am fed up with a country dominated by the Postcode Lottery of the wealth of your parents if you are likely to get to university or not. I wanted therefore all of our children. And in Primary Schools, i mentioned hungry children find it hard to learn. Children coming to school hungry, many of them helped out by decent, wonderful teachers who dip into their wallets and handbags in order to help the children out. It shouldnt be like that and it shouldnt be like that and it shouldnt ever be like that, and thatis shouldnt ever be like that, and that is why our manifesto quite clearly says we will introduce and pay for a Free School Meals for every child in every Primary School in the country. And the experience of those children, growing up together in school together, eating together, is surely a message to them about our world, our society, that you work with each other and you that you work with each other and yu pay that you work with each other and you pay for it through taxation, which is fair in that it falls a bigger burden on the richest and the least burden on the poorest. Surely thatis least burden on the poorest. Surely that is basic and socialjustice in our minds. Jeremy corbyn campaigning in the wedding in berkshire. The country goes to the polls a week tomorrow and there is another tv debate tonight. All seven parties taking part. Theresa may and Jeremy Corbyn will be represented by others from third parties. People say goodbye to viewers on bbc two. This is bbc news, and these are the top stories developing at midday a Breast Surgeon who carried out a series of needless operations is being sentenced for his crimes, described by one victim as grotesque, violent acts. A huge car bomb in the Afghan Capitals Diplomatic Quarter kills 80 people and injures over 350 others. Theresa may accuses labour of wanting uncontrolled immigration. Jeremy corbyn says the country needs skilled migrants to work in the nhs but promises to manage the number coming. I want to ensure we control migration, Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party Want uncontrolled migration. We will manage migration based on the needs of this country. Police investigating last weeks manchester terror attack now believe the Suicide Bomber bought most of the components for the bomb himself. Also this hour, police hunt a dangerous prisoner whos escaped from a salisbury hospital. Michal kisier overpowered his Prison Guards officers believe he may have had help to escape. And a Heavenly Lightshow for stargazers in the Southern Hemisphere as the Aurora Australis sweeps across australia and new zealand. Good morning. Its tuesday 31st of may. Welcome to bbc newsroom live. A Breast Surgeon who carried out unnecessary operations on patients is being sentenced at Nottingham Crown court for intentionally wounding nine women and one man. Ian paterson was convicted last month of 17 counts of wounding with intent and three counts of Unlawful Wounding, but lawyers claim the number victims could run into the hundreds. A few minutes ago in Court Mrjustice Jeremy Baker told mr paterson, you deliberately exaggerated the risk that patients would develop cancer. We will keep you up to date as we get details of the sentencing. As weve been hearing a huge car bomb has exploded in the Afghan Capital kabul, killing at least 80 people and injuring over 350. The bomb exploded during the morning rush hour in the Diplomatic Quarter of the city, near the Foreign Embassy buildings. Windows were shattered within several kilometres of the blast. Its unclear who carried out this attack. In a statement, the taliban denied involvement. The afghan president has described it as an inhuman act. Among the dead is a driver for the bbc Afghan Service, mohammed nazir; four bbc journalists were injured. Our correspondent Harun Najafizada is at the scene and sent this report. This is the scene of the huge bombing which rocked the Afghan Capital kabul. Today we understand it was a water tanker or a lorry full of explosives which hit this strategic location right in the heart of kabul. It is very close to the german embassy, the indian embassy, the french and british embassies. It is also walking distance from the president ial palace. The police have cordoned off the area at the moment and we are not allowed to move further than this for several reasons. One of them is that there might be another Attack Waiting to be carried out. The president has called it and act against humanity. No group has yet taken responsibility for the deadliest attack i have ever seen for the past 15 years or so. But we understand the taliban and other militant groups have increased their activities across Afg Ha Nista N recently. Jeremy corbyn is making a Campaign Speech in reading. We do not do the slightly but we do it because we believe it. We believe in a Health Service for all. We also believe you how to tackling health inequalities. Even ina how to tackling health inequalities. Even in a town like reading or any other time, you live in one place and your Life Expectancy can be a bit shorter than living somewhere else and you can do that across the country. Thats not right, absolutely not right, we have two investor barely across the country. Every hospital is wondering how it can cope, accident and emergency nurses and doctors stressed beyond belief with the situation they are facing. So Whatjohn Ashworth will do when he becomes the Health Secretary is suspend the sustainability and transformation plans and look again at the provision of accident and Emergency Departments all over the country to make sure they are there for everybody to reach. And there is another aspect to it. If we continue this underfunding of social care, and if the government cannot give an a nswer and if the government cannot give an answer on how much they are going to ta ke answer on how much they are going to take out of somebodys value of their home or anything else, then i suggest people look at the Labour Alternative which is to put money in now to end the crisis in social care. And develop a National Social ca re care. And develop a National Social care service. Care. And develop a National Social ca re service. Because care. And develop a National Social care service. Because as with all aspects of public cuts, public spending cuts and austerity, who pays the price . The purest and most vulnerable. Who pays the price . Who has to give up theirjob . Caring for someone, a disabled child or older person suffering dementia or many other conditions, its almost always the women in the household who had to give up theirjobs, lives and careers to care for people. Our philosophy is totally different. We think we as a community should take responsibility and properly fund health and social care. And i am very determined on one other aspect of the Health Service and that is the crisis in Mental Health. One in four of us the crisis in Mental Health. One in fourof us in the crisis in Mental Health. One in four of us in this wonderful meeting here today during our lifetime will suffer some kind of Mental Health crisis. Stress, depression, many things. Some of us will be well cared for and well treated and will feel able to talk to others about it and get support. Others sadly will not. Too many young people get into very dark places and take their own lives because there is nobody there to support them. Its a crisis, its a tragedy and anyone who has ever attended the funeral of a teenager who has taken their own life whilst in deep stress would feel the pay the whole family is going through. Its no solution to cook the number of Mental Herath nurses, its no solution not to have those Emergency Beds available and treatment and support and therapy available very quickly. And so we will ensure Mental Health is properly funded and iam Mental Health is properly funded and i am looking forward to appointing an minister solely to deal with Mental Health and social care so we do deal with this crisis properly. Those are, health and education are two crucial areas of our lives. But its also about how our society develops, how our economy develops. Because there is a gross imbalance. We have 6 Million People earning less tha n we have 6 Million People earning less than living wage. Jeremy corbyn on the Campaign Trail in reading. Letsjoin corbyn on the Campaign Trail in reading. Lets join Norman Corbyn on the Campaign Trail in reading. Letsjoin norman smith in westminster, a week and a day away from the country going to the polls what visual assessment of the State Of Play . One thing is interesting, both parties coming under pressure to spell out more details of their plans for immigration. This after a lea ked plans for immigration. This after a leaked document overnight which suggested the labour party had been considering proposals to end the ban on unskilled migrants from outside the eu, to look at introducing us style green ca rd the eu, to look at introducing us style green card system. This morning Jeremy Corbyn doused down the idea that had any status in the labour party, said it was not party policy and had just been discussed by some researchers. But its opened up by some researchers. But its opened up the debate about what are the two main parties offering on immigration and so farwe main parties offering on immigration and so far we have to say voters have been left completely in the dark. We know theresa may wants to get things down to the Tens Of Thousands but she has not set out any proposals for doing that. What replaces Freedom Of Movement we do not know. Jeremy corbyn also came under pressure over his plans, he said he wanted to put the needs of the economy fast and the government would have two address skills shortages. He said they would also from day one guarantee the rights of eu nationals but in terms of whether we have a visa system or permits or employer sponsorships, we simply dont know. In a way its quite extraordinary that here we have one of the absolute key issues of this campaign and both the main parties are not setting out in any detail what they would do. What is theresa may abdou . She is down in the south west trying to focus on brexit, the tories believing it to be their strongest narrative. They are looking to set out the danger they believe jeremy are looking to set out the danger they believeJeremy Corbyn would poseif they believeJeremy Corbyn would pose if he was doing the negotiating, arguing he is not the man who can cut a good deal for britain and so all his plans would not be deliverable because he would not be deliverable because he would not have the tax revenue, the economy would not be in the sort of state to provide the funds to carry it out. Jeremy corbyn trying to move it out. Jeremy corbyn trying to move it on to his favoured terrain around the nhs and social care as we were just hearing. One thing we have not heard yet which maybe we need to keep an eye on is what happens with the bbc debate later on tonight . Representatives of all the seven main parties, we know who is attending for six of them but we dont know who is going to be attending for the labour party. A slight question as to whether mr corbyn might at the last minute decide to turn up because he has previously said he wont. |j decide to turn up because he has previously said he wont. I would youjump in previously said he wont. I would you jump in because we havejust heard according to sourcesJeremy Corbyn is set to take part in the Election Debate according to the press association. Yes, i think labour insiders look that the last, it was not a debate but the last audience session Withjermey Pang S Men Which theresa may and Jeremy Corbyn took part in and came to the conclusionJeremy Corbyn took part in and came to the conclusion Jeremy Corbyn corbyn took part in and came to the conclusionJeremy Corbyn did better than theresa may and people seemed to warm to the sincerity with which he expressed his views. They were certainly much more buoyant about the outcome and thought why not . Why not go for this sort of debate even though the Prime Minister is not going to be there and maybe take the view it forces theresa may onto the back foot again. This morning Jeremy Corbyn reiterated his challenge to the Prime Minister, saying come and debate me. It seems to me labour are trying to wrong foot theresa may, put the pressure on her and clearly they thinkJeremy Corbyn does well in these tv debates. How much pressure will it put on theresa may if he does confirm as we are thinking he well that he will take part . Might she change her mind . think that is very, very unlikely. The view in the camp of theresa may is they have everything to lose and very little to gain and we saw that to some extent in Thejeremy Paxman debate earlier this week when theresa may had to defend her records. That is always going to be a problem if you are in government because you have to explain your arguments for Cutting Police numbers and School Funding and theresa may was to some extent put on the defensive. I think it will be very unlikely indeed that theresa may, even giving the decision ofJeremy Corbyn, will attend. Ithink even giving the decision ofJeremy Corbyn, will attend. I think she will hunker down and wait for the moment to pass. We have just had it confirmed from our sources that Jeremy Corbyn is going to take part in the debate. Its the bbc Election Debate 2017. Thats at 7 30pm on and Bbc News Channel. Lets look at some of todays other developing stories. Wiltshire police are hunting for a dangerous prisoner armed with a blade believe that his escape was pre planned. Michael kisiel, whos 30, had been taken to hospital in salisbury with a head injury before overpowering guards yesterday evening. He is originally from poland but committed his offences in luton. Wiltshire police who are using a drone in their search for him are warning the public not to approach him. Head coach steve hansen says the lions should have arrived a week before the game but these are the views of the game but these are the views of the lions coach. For people to Start Talking about it now seems a bit ironic because we have been well aware of it and how tough it is and you have just got, aware of it and how tough it is and you havejust got, you cannot dwell on it, you cannot change it, so if you let negativity in terms of thinking about the sort of things worry you its going to influence the team, it is what it is and we are excited about it, looking forward to it and the thing about the schedule, it is tough but some of those tough games are going to give us a nice preparation in terms of getting ready for the test series. Thats all the sport burn out. Ian paterson, the surgeon convicted of carrying out unnecessary Breast Operations has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, he was facing potentially a life sentence. Thejudge prison, he was facing potentially a life sentence. The judge said he would not give them the maximum term but he has given him 15 years. He said in handing down the sentence its unprecedented to see a surgeon sentenced for crimes of this nature. Further aggravating factors include the abuse of trust. He had been found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent and three cou Nts Wounding With Intent and three counts of Unlawful Wounding. In the past few moments we have heard he has been given 15 years for those crimes. Thejudge said he has been given 15 years for those crimes. The judge said he tried to persuade thejury of crimes. The judge said he tried to persuade the jury of your innocence, you may have believed you are untouchable and this may have contributed to your complete lack of remorse. In pursuit of your own material rewards you lost sight of what you were doing without any regard for the long term effects, you deliberately played on the long term fears of patients. You can be charming and charismatic but you use those characteristics to manipulate your patience. The judge told the court the physical and psychological impact on the victims had been great. He said there has been long term effects and complications meaning they still suffer. They all felt violated and vulnerable, some suffer from suffer. They all felt violated and vulnerable, some sufferfrom ptsd, depression and anxiety. The victims we re depression and anxiety. The victims were in court as the judge went through his remarks. Thejudge read out what happened to one of the victims in particular, he went to all of the victims statements in fa ct all of the victims statements in fact as he went through the unnecessary procedures and surgery is carried out by ian paterson. The judge had earlier said he did so for obscure motives which may have included a desire to earn extra money. He had said all the operations were necessary but the jury operations were necessary but the jury agreed with the prosecution that he carried out extensive life changing operations for no medically justifiable reason. We havejust had a statement from the Crown Prosecution Service, the specialist prosecutor has said this case related to an abuse of one of the most important relationships in society, the trust between patient and doctor. Ian paterson repeatedly abused that trust by carrying out unnecessary Major Medical surgery over more than a decade. He knew the procedures were not needed but carried on regardless, inflicting unlawful wounds on his patients. Working closely with the police the cps was faced with the difficult task of selecting the appropriate charges and evidence to put before the court. Using clear and detailed presentations to show the medical circumstances of his victims we demonstrated how his actions went far beyond those of any reasonable surgeon. The impact of his actions has been devastating, from the unnecessary distress of ongoing procedures they did not need to the scars that will always serve as a physical reminder of what the doctor did to them. The Victim S Courage in coming forward enabled the cps to secure this conviction, i hope todays Prison Sentence provides them with a Sense Ofjustice being served. He has been given 15 years in prison for those 17 counts of Unlawful Wounding. He had potentially been facing a maximum life sentence. The president of the Royal College of surgeons had said this morning that no sentence can ever fully reflect the pain and suffering experienced by his victims. No hyperbole can be Strong Enough to condemn the wretched actions he undertook. He was a Rogue Surgeon and liar who cheated his patients out of the care they needed. Simply put he is a disgrace to the medical profession. That ian paterson found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent. He has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, there was a seven week trial at Nottingham Crown court and during that trial the jury was heard how he likes to patients and exaggerated or invented the risk of cancer in order to convince them to go under the knife. His victims were in court for the sentencing of this morning and they have spoken of the impact on then of the surgery ian paterson performed. Thejudge has said it is unprecedented to see a surgeon sentenced for crimes of this nature. Amongst the aggravating factors he said was the issue of abuse of trust. The judge also spoke of the long term effects on the patients and described ian paterson as having deliberately preyed on the long term fears of patients. I think we can bring infill mackie outside Nottingham Crown court, 15 years in jailfor ian Nottingham Crown court, 15 years in jail for ian paterson, Nottingham Crown court, 15 years in jailfor ian paterson, what Nottingham Crown court, 15 years in jail for ian paterson, what was the reaction in court when the sentence was handed down . Surprisingly it was quite subdued. Earlier we had heard Victim Impact statements from six of the ten victims on whom he carried out this unnecessary surgery and some of that was quite powerful and moving testimony. When john some of that was quite powerful and moving testimony. Whenjohn ingram, one of the victims went up to read out his statement, there was applause from the public gallery. Thejudge said he applause from the public gallery. The judge said he would not have any more interruptions. After that it was much quieter and more solemn. Outside court, as i walked out immediately after he had been sent to prison for 15 years and he told the news to people outside because at least 20 or 30 people could not get into court, many victims travelling to see the sentencing, there was cheering and banging on there was cheering and banging on the doors. Several people think he should have got the maximum sentence for Unlawful Wounding with intent which is life, but because he will never practice as the surgeon again and all of his crimes were committed when he was a surgeon the judge said he did not pose a danger to the public in the future. Throughout the hearing today, as details of his offences were read out, he mostly sat in the dock with his head bowed. Occasionally he would shake his head, especially when he was accused of overcharging for some of the operations. It was never worked out, we never got a motive why he did what he did. The police have said it might have been for financial gain and some of his victims who are coming out of court right now behind me thought he was playing god, had some sort perverse pleasure out of doing the surgery, carrying out the surgery, making them feel he had saved their lives when they never had Breast Cancer in the first place. Tell us more about that, literally these patients did not have cancer . That is right, there we re have cancer . That is right, there were many more than the ten whose cases were brought to court but that was a big enough trial the cps felt for it to become a criminal case. In each of those cases they were all told, all referred by gps locally, referred to as they go to surgeon in that area so highly regarded warsi, they went there and he carried out biopsies and tests and told them they had the early signs of Breast Cancer when they did not at all. There was nothing wrong with them. All of them underwent surgery is, still bearing the physical scars of that and the emotional and psychological scars as well. Several diagnosed with ptsd, some have anxiety and depression. Initially they thought their lives have been saved, that this man was a saint. It was only after questions were raised a few years ago that many cases were recalled and the land they should not have undergone the surgery which has left them disfigured and mutilated. How was he found out . Questions had been raised as far back as 1996 the bbc has learned. There is a wider investigation to go on about how he continued to be able to operate on people where a number of people who worked alongside him raised concerns in Different Health trusts and hospitals. There has been an enquiry already carried out by professor sir ian kennedy who outlined how there had been Whistle Blowers but they were not listened to. He was able to bluff his way out, using his charm and Charisma Thejudge his way out, using his charm and charisma the judge referred to to continue to be able to operate on these poor people who many of whom we re these poor people who many of whom were in court today, a lot of them staring intently at ian paterson, some of them shaking their heads as they were forced to relive yet again what had happened. I think a lot of them have taken strength from what happened eventually, its been a long journey. We met at you for a copy before the trial today and they had formed a group, there is a strong sense of camaraderie. Just ten cases in the criminal trial but hundreds more, in fact a civil case going to the high court in october, at least 600 former patients will be represented. Thank you very much, straight back to the courts if there is any reaction from victims or anyone else outside in reaction to the news of the sentencing of ian paterson, 15 years for unnecessary surgery he carried out on patients who did not have cancer. Jeremy corbyn has just been saying that he will take part in tonights televised debate. We havejust been listening to his speech. The Prime Minister seems to have a difficulty in meeting anyone or having a debate. And so there is a debate in cambridge tonight. I invite her to go to cambridge and debate her to go to cambridge and debate her policies, debate record, debate their plans, debate their proposals, and let the public make up their mind. Jeremy corbyn will be taking pa rt mind. Jeremy corbyn will be taking part in that debate. He is replacing another event so that he can go to cambridge tonight. He will definitely be taking part and he has invited theresa may to join definitely be taking part and he has invited theresa may tojoin him. It is highly unlikely, our Political Editor has said. Lets catch up with the weather. Thank you. For most of us, a good day on the Weather Front. Lots of sunshine, particularly apart in northern parts of the uk. Temperatures will be rising across southern and eastern areas of the country. It is a little on the cloudy and outside, particularly across the valleys of wales. Further south, we had a fair bit of cloudless morning. That is breaking up cloudless morning. That is breaking up now, but we could catch one or two showers up now, but we could catch one or two s Howe Rs A Cross up now, but we could catch one or two showers across the southern portions of the uk. Lots of sunshine for the rest of the afternoon across Northern England and eastern scotland. Still showers in one or two spots, but over all, a dry night for most of us. Misty and murky, particularly across western and southern areas. You cant miss this Weather Front approaching across Northern Ireland and Western Scotland. Some rain in the morning and generally increasing amounts of cloud further west as well. Across the bulk of england, those temperatures will be rising, with southerly winds been drawn in by that i pressure. 20 celsius in newcastle. Enjoy your day. This is bbc newsroom live. The headlines at 12. 30pm a Breast Surgeon who carried out a series of needless operations is being sentenced for his crimes described by one victim as grotesque, violent acts. The afghan president has described a car bomb in election news, Jeremy Corbyn has Just Announced he will appear in tonights tv debate on bbc one. With representatives of the six other parties. The Labour Leader has challenged theresa may to a debate, but she has declined to take part. The afghan president has described a car bomb which killed at least 80 people in kabul as an inhuman act. More than 300 people were wounded and several embassies were damaged in the attack in the citys Diplomatic Quarter. As preparations for saturdays Benefit Concert in manchester get under way, Police Investigating last weeks attack now believe the Suicide Bomber bought most of the components for the bomb himself, but havent ruled out a wider network. Police hunting for a prisoner on the run say his escape from a hospital in salisbury could have been pre planned. Michal kisier, whos thought to be armed with a razor blade, overpowered his guards at the hospital last night. Lets return to that breaking news this hour the Breast Surgeon ian paterson has jailed for 15 years. He was convicted of 17 counts of wounding with intent and 3 of Unlawful Wounding at a trial last month. The 59 year old carried out unnecessary surgery on 9 women and one man after falsely telling them they had Breast Cancer. John ingram was operated on by ian paterson. He was later told by doctors that his surgery had been unnecessary. Mr ingram has been talking to the bbcsjeremy cooke. Did you have any doubts that it was the right thing to do . No. From the information i was given, which i now know to be complete fantasy. There was no other choice. If i wanted to survive, if i wanted not to develop Breast Cancer and all the horrors that go along with it, i needed to undergo this operation. And so after the surgery, what were your feelings towards him at that point . the surgery, what were your feelings towards him at that point . I think rather if use my Police Statement i saidi rather if use my Police Statement i said i thought he was god, but he certainly was a hero. He was fantastic. He had sorted me out. All of this potential illness and horror that goes along with Breast Cancer isnt going to happen to me now. That goes along with Breast Cancer isnt going to happen to me nowm your mind and that of your family, your mind and that of your family, you saved your life . Absolutely. And at some point, you came to realise that what he had done was completely unnecessary. I think the main penny dropping moment was i sat down with one of the surgeons and he said when we read our notes on you, myjaw dropped. We couldnt believe what had happened to you. And you get that chill feeling. And you say, really . And what are your feelings towards him . Disbelief, horror, the thought that i had been lying there under a general anaesthetic with the sky this guy, with all kinds of sharp implements and i didnt need to be there. I had no need to be there. And he had no reason to cut bits of me. Patterson exploited to me as bits of me. Patterson exploited to measa bits of me. Patterson exploited to me as a person. For his own ends. Both as a cash cow, being paid to operate needlessly on me, to satisfy whatever bit of Twisted Logic is in his head, and also he exploited me and invalidated me. Ithought his head, and also he exploited me and invalidated me. I thought it was cowardly and pathetic. But he tried to rationalise the way he victimised me, the way he hurt me, both physically and mentally, and then tried to defend himself. Using the same vulnerability he had exploited to get me under the knife in the first place. This guy potentially has a history of offending that spans 15 years. Or more, maybe. And that has got to be addressed. The sentence has got to be significant enough so that society is protected from this man. Well, that is one of the victims. More victims are speaking just outside the court. Lets hear what they are saying. We have waited years for this and finally mr paterson has been stopped, but now we need to look to those who were co conspirators, who let this happen, you saw it happen and said nothing, he took advantage of Vulnerable People like myself. These other people here, who have had the guts to stand up. We have had the guts to stand up. We have had to come before you all today. We have had to go to court and get justice when all of those medical people who actually knew what was going on and said nothing. These co conspirators, these people who turned their backs and said nothing, we need to look to them now and find out why they said nothing. They need to be stopped. They are still all in practice and they need to be stopped too. Obviously, you have to think to yourself that the Justice System works on certain balls. We are satisfied that at last he is going to be behind bars, he has been stopped from doing what he was doing and we are happy with what the judge has given him and ijust feel that other people need to be looked at now. In the medical profession who worked with him, co conspired with him to do this and they need to be looked at and stopped as well. Terrible. I lost my home, i lost my marriage, i lost my house, i lost my job. I lost absolutely everything. He took everything away from me. And lam he took everything away from me. And i am still he took everything away from me. And lam stillup he took everything away from me. And i am still up until today because this has been going on now since the 905, and today i have gotju5tice. He took away my youth. Diane greene. Sorry . I want someone to look closely at them. Who else benefited from this. We know it is mr paterson benefited financially, but other people benefited either by augmentation of their career or also Them5elve5 Augmentation of their career or also themselves by working on those ladie5 afterwards. There were people, specifically ladies afterwards. There were people, specifically surgeons, who actually looked at me and so most of my breasts were left in, especially on one side where i had no cancer at all. Left in. And both sides tissue was left in. But surgeon who worked on me to reconstruct my breasts, that sergei needs to be looked at. That surgeon would that many women like me and they had done hundreds and hundreds of operations. That particular person would have known that was an incorrect mastectomy, that was an incorrect mastectomy, that was an incorrect mastectomy, that was not a full mastectomy. They said nothing. They said nothing. I think all you people need to look into that person. I cant name them. I think you people need to investigate. People worked closely with mr paterson, those people. Todays sentencing has brought to an end over four years of trauma and stress. In trying to bring this man to account. No amount of Prison Sentence will ever compensate what myself and the other people affected have gone through. Lets not forget the people involved and some who are not with us now. We may never know the real reason why he acted in such an evil way. Throughout the trial, he has made no attempt to show any remorse for his actions. And maybe revealing his true character, rather than the charming and professional man who we all thought he was. Thankfully, the jury were able to see what actually was the truth and gave the verdict we were all hoping for. The judge is obviously recognising his actions in the sentence given. It will never fully recompense for all i have gone through, but i feel thatjustice has been done. I would like to express my thanks to the West Midlands police and all involved in the operation, but i think i should particularly mention d s operation, but i think i should particularly mention d 5 dale robertson, who has worked tirelessly in bringing this man tojustice. I hope now that there will be a public enquiry into the whole affair, which will bring forward procedures to ensure patients have full protection and these terrible events can never happen again. In support of such aims, thomson is on the tipsters, who are acting on my behalf are watching a campaign, patients before profits, which calls for legislation to be put in place to ensure patients have full protection when undertaking private medical care. Something which unfortunately was lacking when i had my surgery in 2001. As you will appreciate, this isa very 2001. As you will appreciate, this is a very emotional day. So that is all i would like to say. Thank you. I think so. We would all like him to have life, but i think 15 years is a good enough sentence. Hopefully he will know what he has done and he is paying for it. We are going to have to live with this for the rest of our lives. He has got 15 years and he can walk away after that. But we can never walk away from all of the operations that we have had and it will never go away because you just see it in the mirror every morning. I hope he has a lovely time. I hope you meet some really nice people in there as well. Yes, lovely nice people in prison, yes. Hello. My name isjohn ingram and i was a victim of ian paterson. Today in paterson has been convicted of what i called in court dark and grotesque crimes. He used his position, his obvious charm and charisma to lower patients into a system where he was able to drop and operate and remove body parts from patients whom he had convinced had cancer or wear on their way to cancer. He has received a sentence of 15 years. I am still processing ifi of 15 years. I am still processing if i think 15 years is enough for somebody who has shown no remorse, who has put his patients through hell, if 15 years is enough for a man like that to appreciate the crimes that he has committed. Right up crimes that he has committed. Right up until the moment of sentencing, he was sitting in the dock, shaking his head in disbelief as if he was the victim. It is up to society to decide whether 15 years is enough for such a crime. There is no precedent for his crime and therefore thejudge had his hands tied with sentencing guidelines. What i would like to say is thank you to the police who handled this and the criminal justice you to the police who handled this and the criminalJustice System that pursued it relentlessly, even through the obfuscation and manipulation that paterson tried on the criminal justice manipulation that paterson tried on the criminalJustice System and they did a splendid job. And thank you to ajury did a splendid job. And thank you to a jury that had the studious patients to see through a largely ridiculous defence. Thank you very much. Today was about closure for me. Today was about beginning the healing process for myself. Some form of punishment is needed. And society demands a cost of somebody who acts in such a horrendous manner. That is a very good point. There was a big space in the dock. Mr paterson was in there on his own. There are some people that think that there should have been a corporate entity in that box and thatis corporate entity in that box and that is the corporate entity that allowed him to carry out this dreadful system within their building. Asi as ijust said, he was shaking his head and adopting the boys and polls of somebody who has just had a bit of somebody who has just had a bit of bad luck and everybody was against him, shaking his head, the judge was making remarks. Even when thejudge was quoting judge was making remarks. Even when the judge was quoting stuff that paterson had written in letters that was lies, paterson was shaking his head. I cant hear you. Was lies, paterson was shaking his head. I cant hearyou. Im was lies, paterson was shaking his head. I cant hear you. Im sorry. I was quite surprised when he said of previous good character because just the charges that have been dealt with today cover a 15 year span of offending. If that is previous good character, was it when he was a schoolboy . I dont know. Yeah. Yeah, ithink he was a schoolboy . I dont know. Yeah. Yeah, i think there is a group, patients before profits. That is just group, patients before profits. That isjust developing, group, patients before profits. That is just developing, that will be a force to get this looked at. As i said, ina force to get this looked at. As i said, in a recent bbc interview, the private sector need to put their house in order. I think that is it for me, thanks. I wouldjust like house in order. I think that is it for me, thanks. I would just like to say how pleased for all of my clients that the criminal trial is over and that the civil case will now continue and that is due for trial in the royal courts ofjustice in october and we hope that all of the clients, including the new people, about 120 people who have come forward since the verdict, will find justice in that as well. We say that there is a non della double duty of care and we hope that that will be accepted by the judge at the civil case. In respect of the mdu, we have read the policy and we think that it still does cover everybody, so we are hoping that they will make the decision to leave the cover in place. We believe at the present time there are about 650, but 120 have come forward since the verdict, so there may still be people at the moment who will still come forward to putting claims. Put in a claims. It must not be forgotten that there were a huge jump off claims settled by the national Health Service, so if you add them all together, it must be approximately 1000 at the moment. Yes. Yes, the current cases that are going to trial in october are the ones against aspire in the private sector. Well, we are actually pleading that there is a case against the nhs because we think that they could have done more to prevent that treatment going forwards if they had actually suspended him in 2003 or 2004. We believe that was possible. And we also believe that aspire were asking questions of the nhs, so there is a cross claim from aspire against the nhs as well within the same body of the civil proceedings. Thompsons is actually launching a campaign called patients before profits because we would really like the insurance position to be clarified and other systems such as Multidisciplinary Team meetings to actually be brought in within the private sector as they are in the nhs system, so that hopefully this type of claim will never arise again. But we also believe that private hospitals ought to bear responsibility for any malpractice on their premises, the same as the nhs do. There is something called a part 20 proceeding, but it is actually a cross claim against the nhs for damages as well. Yes, yes. I think this is by far and away the worst i have dealt with. I mean, we are dealing with another set of cases against Rogue Surgeons at the moment, but the maximum recall there is in the low hundreds and the re call is in the low hundreds and the recall here has been far, far higher. We have never had a criminal conviction before, so it is very, very significant. Thanks. That is a solicitor who is representing the hundreds of victims, pointing out that the sentencing of ian paterson to 15 yea rs sentencing of ian paterson to 15 years in prison for 17 counts of building without intent and Unlawful Wounding is the first time a surgeon has been convicted in this way. In a moment, the news at one. First, the weather. We have some nice weather right now and it will stay warm for most of the day. Not completely dry. Just as predicted, this morning it was cloudy across southern parts of the uk, where you have this cloud there might be one or two showers developing in the afternoon, but mostly light ones. You can never guarantee that all showers will be light, but there will not be many of them. You can see some stretching from wales there into southern parts of england and the south east, but not of that it will be a beautiful, sunny afternoon. Temperatures getting up to 20 celsius. A lovely day across the low lands of scotland and the heart of scotland as well. Fresher in lerwick there. Those little showers may continue for a time this evening, but for most of us it is a dry night. Some mist around in one or two places. And also you cant miss this area of rain that is approaching from the north west. That is expected to move across Northern Ireland and into scotland. It is linked to this area of low pressure and that will do a couple of things. First of all, it will bring the fresher, wetter weather to Western Areas but also it will draw in some warmth from france. Two things happening on thursday, cooler, wetter conditions settling into belfast, but warmer weather warming up right across england. It could be up to 26 celsius in london. 21 celsius in yorkshire. This Weather Front will be very slow moving, so on and offering through the afternoon across Northern Ireland and some parts of western and south western scotla nd parts of western and south Western Scotland especially. And then on friday, this Weather Front is still here. Ahead of it, very warm. Also a chance of some thunderstorms across south eastern and southern areas on friday as well. Those storms will be rumbling through the new continent during the course of saturday as well, so not far away, but probably staying just towards the east of us andi staying just towards the east of us and i think the weekend overall is looking relatively fresh. You can see those temperatures not quite so high in the south east. Down to 22 celsius. Lets summarise the weekend. Fine weather, lots of sunny spells. Some scattered showers but feeling fresher. A Breast Surgeon who carried out a series of unnecessary operations is sentenced to 15 years in prison. Ian paterson was found guilty of wounding with intent, and Unlawful Wounding, in a case involving ten private patients. At last. Today we have justice. We have waited years for this and finally mr paterson has been stopped. Well have the latest reaction from Nottingham Crown court. Also this lunchtime Jeremy Corbyn says a Labour Government would manage migration according to the needs of the economy the Prime Minister says a vote for labour is a vote for an influx of migrants. We have a skills shortage, because this government has not invested enoughin this government has not invested enough in training and education. And, that skill shortage has to be met from somewhere
