And steam power, for the first time in almost half a century, a timetabled steam Train Service returns to the english railways. Good morning, its tuesday 14th february. Welcome to bbc Newsroom Live. Donald Trumps NationalSecurity Adviser, Michael Flynn, has resigned over his contacts with russia. Telephone intercept is show that Michael Flynn, mr Trumps NationalSecurity Adviser, had discussed us sanctions with the russian envoy before mr trump took office. Its illegal for private citizens to conduct us diplomacy, and the phone calls happened late last year before mr flynn was appointed to the administration. Before being appointed, he was known for his close ties with the senior russian officials. Here he is sat with President Putin at a dinner in 2015. Hes also been accused of misleading the Vice President mike pence about what happened. Heres our washington correspondent, david willis. Barely three weeks into his presidency, donald trump has lost one of his closest advisers. Retired army general Michael Flynn, a man renowned for his close ties to russia, resigned amid allegations that he misled senior officials about conversations between him and the Russian Ambassador a few weeks before the Trump Administration took office. In his resignation letter, mr flynn said that as the incoming National Security advisor he held numerous phone calls with foreign counterparts, ministers and ambassadors. Unfortunately, he goes on, because of the fast pace of events i inadvertently briefed the Vice President elect and others with incomplete information regarding my calls with the Russian Ambassador. Missing, it appears, from mr flynns account was a discussion of sanctions imposed by the Outgoing Obama Administration in response to russias meddling in the us election. Any offer to lift such sanctions by a member of the Incoming Administration would be a breach of american law. Meanwhile, it has emerged that the Usjustice Department warned the Trump Administration several weeks ago that mr flynns account of the conversation differed from that of intelligence officials, who were listening in. The Department Also advised the president that mr flynn had potentially left himself open to blackmail by the russians. All of which prompts the broader question, what did the president himself know about Michael Flynns activities and when did he know it . Senior democrats have said mr flynns resignation doesnt end questions over his contacts with the russians. But a senior russian mp has said flynn was forced to resign in an attempt to damage us russia relations. Our correspondent Steve Rosenberg is in moscow for us. What is the reaction there . There has been quite an angry reaction from senior russian politicians, at the upper house of parliament, the head of the parliaments foreign affa i rs head of the parliaments Foreign AffairsCommittee Posted an interesting message on social media, saying that either donald trump had been driven into a corner or that the new administration was permeated with russia phobia from top to bottom. One of his colleagues treated that this was about paranoia and a witchhunt. The government there has basically been no comment from Vladimir Putin, his spokesman said to journalist from Vladimir Putin, his spokesman said Tojournalist On from Vladimir Putin, his spokesman said to journalist on a Conference Call that this was an internal matter for the americans, and internal matter for the Trump Administration, and had nothing at all to do with moscow. I then asked him, yesterday you were happy to comment about this, he did yesterday, saying that there had been no, they should at all between russian and american there had been no conversations at all between russian and american officials about sanctions before trump took office, but he said, no more comment. The russian political elite are definitely angry. All of this is against a backdrop of russia being accused of effectively trying to get mrtrump accused of effectively trying to get mr trump selected, all those accusations of Cyber Attacks during the campaign, and a perception that Michael Flynn was soft on russia, that he perhaps wanted to rush sanctions, the sanctions against russia, to be eased. Yes, certainly Michael Flynn was known to the russians, he had spoken openly about the need for closer relations between moscow and washington. He publicly called for the two countries to Work Together to fight terrorism. As you mentioned before, he had met Vladimir Putin, sat at his table at a gala event couple of yea rs his table at a gala event couple of years ago. So this is a blow, certainly, to the russians, and i think the way that the political elite here and the russian state media will portray this is that they will be saying that in america, there are people in the us establishment, in the us media, in the republican party, in the white house, who do not want closer relations between moscow and washington. They will portray this as an attempt to scupper Donald Trumps attempts for closer ties with moscow. Thank you very much. We will be talking to the american journalist and a us Foreign Policy a nalyst journalist and a us Foreign Policy analyst at 11 30am, about what this could mean. A 10 year old boy has died after suffering serious Head Injuries at a Shopping Centre in reading. He was taken to hospital after reportedly being hit by a piece of furniture in a topshop store. Police say the death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious and officers are continuing to make inquiries. Our correspondent Duncan Kennedy is in reading for us. What else can you tell us about what happened and the investigation into this . The details about the exact specific incident are still not very clear at all, i had just been into the centre behind me, top shop is up on the second floor, the shutters are currently down. There are two Security Guards standing outside. The lights are on inside although i did not see any style or investigation going on this morning. There are also members of the public going on, there are other shops open, but it seemed that some people wa nted open, but it seemed that some people wanted to go into topshop but the message was that that was not going to happen. The incident happened at 4pm yesterday, the ten year old boy was in the shop, we do not know who with what he was doing. The police say he was involved in an incident where he sustained serious Head Injuries as a result with coming into Co Nta Ct Injuries as a result with coming into contact with store furniture, we do not know what that means, whether something fell on him or if he tripped on something. He was tended to by medical staff who then took to the Royal Berkshire hospital where he later died of this Head Injuries. His next of kin have been informed. We have got a call into the owners of topshop, arcadia, they say they are preparing to make a statement, i am say they are preparing to make a statement, iam not say they are preparing to make a statement, i am not sure what that will include. We have also spoken to the local council here. They say they are working with the police to find out what happened and a member of their staff will be visiting the centre at some point this morning. We have also spoken to the Health And Safety Executive who say they are currently not involved in this incident which has tragically led to the death of a ten year old boy. Rolls royce has reported a record loss of £4. 6 billion in the last year, the worst in the history of the British Engineering giant. The firm was forced to pay around £700 million in fines after being found guilty of bribery and corruption offences dating back more than 25 years. But the business has also suffered due to the weakening of the pound. The chairman of the Japanese Electronics conglomerate, toshiba, has resigned following the news that the company suffered a net loss this year of 3. 1; billion. Shigenori shiga announced he was stepping down shortly after the the company delayed an announcement of its financial results. It had been widely expected to write off billions of dollars due to its problematic Nuclear Energy business and to admit that toshibas future is under threat. With me is our industry correspondentjohn moylan. Lets talk about both those companies, they are pretty huge losses. Partially the festival, is its future really under threat . Tashi the first of all. Tashi burr. They bought a us Construction Nuclear firm last year, burr. They bought a us Construction Nuclearfirm last year, they overestimated the value of that firm. There would be big write downs associated with that purchase. Today we have had a chaotic morning in japan where initially they said they we re japan where initially they said they were planning to have the results put back for a month, then they put out some guidance to the market about what that would look like, and they are shockingly bad. 6 billion write down on this us nuclear issue, leading to a three to £4 billion loss in its business, Which Overta Kes Loss in its business, which overtakes the Matter Equity in the business so raises questions about the future of toshiba. They will have to sell some assets, they will probably be oval to continue because they are a global be able to continue because they are a global industry. This could have implications because toshiba are reviewing their entire Nuclear Operation around the world and they are the Lead Developer in a big Nuclear Project planned up near sellafield in cumbria. Not surprising, that the chairman has resigned after all of that. Then rolls royce, again, is huge and staggering one losses. Yes, Something Like £4 billion, biggest in its history. They have had a torrid few years, this is the fifth profits warning it has put out. Most of the losses are related to Currency Fluctuations, they will sell you an engine but also a 20 year servicing contract so it has to work out how to deal with Currency Fluctuations and it has bet the wrong way, with coming out of brexit. And it has also been through a hell of a time due to corruption issues that have been going on for decades, and it is facing a big fine here and in the us. When you put all of that together, it is a difficult time for rolls royce but analysts looking to all of this are looking at the underlying business. They are hopeful that the underlying business is getting back to a reasonable position. They are hopeful that rolls royce, which is a really important uk business, a massive investment in research and development, create high value jobs and export around the world, it is exactly the kind of company that the uk needs, so they hope that it is the end of the bad news and they are moving forward well. Through the turbulence, so to speak thank you very much indeed. The queen will this morning open a Specialist Centre to combat the threat posed to the uk by online attacks. The queen will this morning open a Specialist Centre to combat ministers say the National CyberSecurity Centre, which cost nearly two billion pounds to set up, will make the uk the safest place to live and work online. Our security correspondent Gordon Corera reports. Russian involvement in efforts to hack information. The worst case is that all of our customers data has been accessed. Chinas activities in cyberspace is a significant source of concern. Hacking that could hamper vote counting. Cyber attacks are, it seems, everywhere. Hackers targeting governments, businesses, ordinary people. Now, a new organisation is being formally launched. Its mission, to defend the uk. At its new headquarters, the head of the National CyberSecurity Centre told me the threat is real. Weve had significant losses of personal data, significant intrusions by hostile state actors, significant reconnaissance against Critical National infrastructure. And ourjob is to make sure we deal with that in the most effective way possible. So what weve done here is create a room of the near future and weve got some devices that are all connected to the internet. The new centre is notjust there to protect government, but also peoples homes. Its Technical Director showed me how internet connected items like lamps and Coffee Makers could be vulnerable, even a childs toy doll. More and more of our life is moving online. The uks one of the most digitally dependent economies in the world. A strength, but also a vulnerability. And protecting it online in the future will be vital for economic as well as National Security. Uk inflation has risen at its fastest pace in the past two and half years. The office for National Statistics said Consumer Prices rose 1. 8 last month, up from 1. 6 in december. The increase was driven by higher fuel prices and the fall in the value of the pound. With me is erik britton, hes a director at Financial ConsultancyFathom Consulting and a former member of the Bank Of Englands Monetary Analysis division. Thank you for being with us. Should we be alarmed by these latest Innovation Figures . No, it is to be expected, in fact the rise was slightly less than expected by the consensus, we thought it would be i. 9 . It is the feed through from the fall in the value of sterling that occurred after the brexit referendum, and there is more of that to come, with Headline Inflation going up to about 3 over the next year, maybe a bit more. That is quite a lot compared to what we have had. Yes, but it is not that big of a deal. The Bank Of England, the mpc in the past has not changed Interest Rates with Inflation Running at four or 5 . And for similar reasons, it is to do with the fall of the value of sterling, and higher Importing Prices rather than domestic or generated inflation which is what the bank wants to keep an eye on. As far as that goes, there is no problem. It does not seem very long since we were talking about negative inflation or deflation. Indeed, and the global recession through that into sharp relief, through that into issue. This points to something else, over the course of the last ten or 15 yea rs, the course of the last ten or 15 years, in the uk and globally, there has been this massive build up of debt, whether it is government or household debt, in the uk. And that those high debt levels, they have pressed down inflation gradually over a long period of time. If it was not for the fact that sterling had fallen, or oil prices were rising, then we would be looking at a pretty weak inflation picture courtesy of that very high Debt Position that we have got ourselves into. That position is getting worse and worse. What about the implications for Interest Rates, long term . Implications for Interest Rates, long term . They implications for Interest Rates, long term . They have been so low for so long, does this mean they will stay low . I think in all likelihood, yes, the Bank Of England will look through this high inflation and continue to look through it, even if it goes to three or beyond three. They will not budge Interest Rates because it full charge that this is, in inverted commas, the wrong type of inflation, and imported inflation, which means that your pound goes less further than it did. So demand will be weaker down the line. There is no reason for the bank to tighten rates or squeeze demand because demand is already going to fall because of higher inflation. But is that the right thing to be doing . The bank and the Mpc Have Got A very narrow focus on trying to control Headline Inflation, which is what they have been tasked with doing, they are doing that in a reasonable fashion. But that narrow focus means they are not looking at the much Bigger Picture, and that is to do with the productivity of our economy which is absolutely terrible and has been since the global recession and arguably before that. It is hard to overstate how terrible that is. We have never seen a Productivity Performance this week in all of our peacetime history of 200 years. And that question, why is our productivity so poor, and what are we going to do about it, is not being addressed by the bank because they have this narrow focus and it is not being addressed by anyone else, that is the thing that we should be thinking about. We will talk about that on another day. Thank you very much indeed. The headlines on bbc Newsroom Live. The kremlin is refusing to comment on the resignation of president Trumps National security advisor. The father of a soldier killed in iraq in 2007 has criticised proposals which could make it harder for troops and their families to sue the Ministry Of Defence if something goes wrong in combat. The mod which is consulting on the changes says it could reduce the need for Lengthy Court battles. Our Legal Affairs correspondent Clive Coleman reports. How old was he when he first started playing the drums . He was about nine or ten. In 2007, colin redpaths son, Lance Corporal kirk redpath, a keen drummer in the irish guards, died when a Roadside Bomb exploded next to his lightly armoured Snatch Land Rover in iraq. Kirk was one of some 37 servicemen and women killed in so called Snatch Land Rovers in afghanistan and iraq. Colin fought a six year legal battle against the Ministry Of Defence, eventually winning the right at the Supreme Court to bring an action against the government under human rights law. Three years later, that case is only now coming to a close. The mods new proposals cover battle and the preparations for it. They include stopping legal claims for negligence against the mod in the courts, a no fault Compensation Scheme for injured Service Personnel and families of those killed, assessors to value injuries and loss based on expert reports they commission, and compensation to be at the same level as if the mod was found negligent in court. Nobody disputes that its a really good idea for Service Personnel injured in the course of combat and the families of those who have been killed to be spared long and frustrating legal battles through the courts. But there are real concerns about the Ministry Of Defence scrapping the duty of care that it owes to soldiers. The fire brigade, the police, the ambulance service, they all have to go out with equipment that works, and the right equipment, and that should be the same for a soldier. I mean, if not, then what the mod is saying is we could send our Boys And Girls out with broomsticks, it wouldnt matter. Theres no comeback. And lawyers worry that bypassing the courts creates unfairness. Youve suffered injury. You think that the employer, the organisation, the mod, is at fault, and yet youre asked to rely upon the mod to assess the compensation that it should pay you for the damage that it has caused you. Thats not right. In a statement, the Ministry Of Defence said. His ashes are with me. The mods consultation on its proposals ends injust over a week. Colin redpath hopes that, for the injured and families of the fallen, the new system ensures maximum safety and fairness. An afghan interpreter who worked alongside british troops says it will be a Death Sentence if the home office sends him back to afghanistan. Javed hokta is applying for asylum for the second time after receiving threatening letters from the taliban. The former Liberal Democrat leader lord ashdown has described the treatment of armed forces interpreters as a shame on the nation. Audrey dias reports. Theyjust use us and leave us. You call them heroes, we save your heroes, now i feel ashamed and i regret my time being with them. This was not the life that javed hotak imagined, after spending two years serving alongside British Forces in afghanistan. I was working as a soldier and interpreter as well. With sbs and sas, the British Special forces. His reward . Death threats from the taliban, so he fled to britain in 2008, hoping to find asylum. Javed handed in these Death Threats he received from the taliban to the people in the home office. In this one, for example, it says, you will be in hell very soon. Here they accuse him for being a spy for the crusaders and sentence him and his family to the death penalty. The home office did not accept that javed was in any danger and said it was safe for him to return back to afghanistan. That would be appalling if something happened and there would be one person to blame, the ministers of the crown and the government in what is, i think, an act as shameful as any i can remember a British Government taking. Javed is making a renewed Asylum Application later this month based on new evidence but for now he finds himself living illegally in the west midlands, relying on friends for a roof over his head. This morning the home office has issued the following statement. A Government Spokesperson said. Timetabled services on a World Famous Railway Line are being powered by steam for the first time in decades. This morning tornado, the newest Steam Locomotive in britain, has begun pulling 12 Northern Services on the Settle Carlisle Line and it will do so over three consecutive days. It is part of celebrations to mark the re opening of the line after landslides closed a long stretch. Danny savage has more. A normal service on the settle to Carlisle Route in north yorkshire. For the next few days, this is going to be replaced with this. For the first time in nearly half a century, a timetabled Steam Service is to run in england, and thats a bargain, because a trip on one of these normally costs a lot. The specialness in these trains is not that they are special trains, its that they are ordinary trains thatjust happened to be pulled by a Steam Locomotive. You can buy a normal National Network ticket, northern ticket, for travel over the settle to carlisle line, and instead of having a diesel, your have a Steam Locomotive. What it means is that if you buy a ticket, say, from skipton to appleby over the next couple of days, youll pay only what it normally costs to be on this, the day to day normal diesel service. But what you get is a ride on a steam train. Its going to be a massive boost, its going to be fantastic to see lots of people on the train, loads of people coming to the towns along the railway. Some services have already sold out. For those involved, its going to be busy week. We know that people are really interested in steam trains, we get a lot of calls into our office all year round from people asking about steam excursions, so its no surprise really to us that this has been hugely popular. Theres something irresistible about the magic of steam and theres no point fighting it, its clearly what people really want to do. So, why, after 49 years, it is happening now . It came from germany, actually, where, for a couple of decades, they have been doing this, planned steam on scheduled services. Not all the time, of course, just the odd day here and there, so its borrowed from there. Its never been tried in the uk. The star of the show is called tornado. Experience shows this handsome locomotive makes people stop and stare. A lot of people stand there and watch in awe, other people look up from their ipads and their phones, and their newspapers, and they are like, wow, what is that . And it is like a time machine, but it is a time machine we can take to people and thats what makes it enjoyable, seeing the look on their faces when tornado goes right through the station. And just look at all these camera flashes. This is what happens when steam trains run. Operator Northern Trains says this is about giving the settle To Carlisle Route A boost after it was closed by a landslide. This is a project that has really captured the imagination of the public, our customers. We are really pushing the boundaries but we are determined to make some real success for the people on the settle to Carlisle Route. But the services are only running for a few days before they disappear in the mists of time. Lets see what the weather is doing. We had a bit of a mixed bag to start the day, some of us started on a cold night with a bitter frost, the day, some of us started on a cold night with a bitterfrost, but also some sunshine. The other side of the story with was the south west, where we had cloud into northern ireland. It is to slowly drifting its way north and east. The rain is light and patchy, we are not expecting large totals. We will have some spells of sunshine in Northern England, Western Scotland, but Eastern Scotland and the North East Of England having allowed. Getting into double figures in and plymouth. The south west will brighten up and we will get to 14 degrees. This evening patchy rain works north, another area of rain into the south west by the end of the night and most places frost free, maybe the far north of scotland having a touch of frost. Cloudy tomorrow but some sunshine in the north of scotland, and then the south west but with showers, the main but with showers, the area scotland, and then the south west but with showers, the area of train going eastwards. Double figures widespread tomorrow. This is bbc Newsroom Live. The headlines at 11 30am. Flynn discussed american sanctions with the Russian Ambassador in washington. But that was before mr trump took office. He is accused of misleading the Vice President about what happened. We will talk about the implications of all of this with the american journalist and broadcaster michael goldfarb, and also im joined by the Associate Professor in us history at Northumbria University. Thank you very much indeed forjoining us, both of you. Michael, just explain to us, what happened . What is he accused of, and why is it considered in america a crime, if you like . We can get to the. Its not really a crime, although there is a law against it and a long standing one. What happened is this. In december, having been presented by his own security and intelligence agencies, proof of russian meddling in the election, president obama extended sanctions against the resume of Vladimir Putin on the very day that he did that, Michael Flynn had a meeting with the Russian Ambassador in the United States. And he said its just a transition period thing, its just a transition period thing, its a courtesy call, in myjob i need to know all the players. But it was alleged that he had discussed these very sanctions, and said dont worry about them because as soon as donald trump is president , we will remove the sanctions. And he denied saying that. He was asked by the Vice President , mike pence, who is investigating on behalf of the president exactly what was said in these conversations. He denied it to mike pence. Through some pretty vigorous reporting by the Washington Post, it came out that in fact he had said precisely what was alleged. At that moment, his position became untenable, and he had to resign. Very quickly, its not. There is a law against it, isnt there . There is convention that if you are a private citizen, you cant conduct diplomacy for america. Private citizen, you cant conduct diplomacy for americalj private citizen, you cant conduct diplomacy for america. I dont think anyone has ever been prosecuted under this act, but you know, it has happened. In 1968 while Lyndon Johnson was trying to negotiate an end to the vietnam war, richard nixon, a private citizen at that point, candidate for the presidency. He opened a back channel to the South Vietnamese and said, mccarron with peace talks, if nixon gets elected eu will get a better deal dont carry on with peace talks, you will get a better deal. You know, youre negotiating with russia, delivers quite the same level. At the moment, it is americas biggest antagonist on the world stage. the moment, it is americas biggest antagonist on the world stage. Is at the way you see it . Is this evidence, im sure it will be taken as such by many people who dont like the Trump Administration, that the Trump White House is soft on russia . I think it is. I think this is evidence, i think you have heard other concerns about other Cabinet Members like Rex Tillerson as well, about their elections with russia. Importantly, about their elections with russia. Importa ntly, it shows about their elections with russia. Importantly, it shows that the Drop Administration doesnt get Foreign Relations yet. The logistics, the protocols relations yet. The logistics, the protocols the relations yet. The logistics, the protocols the Trump Administration. They are opening up a relationship with russia at the very same time, they are closing of a relationship with one of russias closest allies, i ran, putting sanctions on them. It seems completely disjointed. Dyche iran. I have no idea what exactly the administration is trying to do iran putting sanctions. With those informal contacts, looking at it charitably, they were trying through back channels to establish policy with russia before the administration actually got going. |j think that there are two levels here, and one of them was touched on. Since taking office, the reality is of russias close relationship with iran, particularly in the war in syria, where russia and iran are working to prop up the government. This is almost against american interests, because of the Trump Administration has a strong anti iran bias at the moment. There is that level. But then there is the other level, the long standing contacts between donald trump the businessman over more than a decade, with Business Interests in russia. We dont know what those details are, and we dont know what those details are, and i think that the prying out of Michael Flynn from his administration is only the tip of the iceberg. I think there is a lot more to know about trumps Business Relationships with russia, and how much they continue. Its quite interesting how all of this came to light. You know, it leaked out, it was investigated by the Washington Post newspaper. It shows how tough, actually, the Trump Administration are going to thats right. The thing to take away from this is that the national bureaucracy has real power. Although we see people put into position that feel they can take on the role of leading departments like the role of leading departments like the State Department or the National Security apparatus. In reality, the people that donald trump has disaffected within the National Security community, the intelligence community, this is how they fight back. They leaked material to the press, and that compromises Donald Trumps ambitions around Foreign Policy. They are very powerful. This is indeed, as other scandals in American History have broken, with watergate there was a cia assistant who leaked information to the journalists to the Washington Post. We are seeing is here. If donald trump intends to be a successful president and have some Foreign Policy that is actually coherent, he will need to get a handle on those officers. Do you think that having been caught out if you like with Michael Flynn and these contacts, these clandestine contacts, whatever you want to call them, does that mean that americas, will change . Perhaps it will be less off towards the kremlin, because his administration has been caught out. Or not . I dont know. One of the things about the kia took started to this administration is, i dont think donald trump knows. The chaotic start. Until he can formulate something coherent in his own mind, we cant begin to start predicting what will happen next. Rex tillerson has been referenced, has huge Business Dealings in russia. He actually seems like the calm hand on the tiller, if i can get away with that, if it hasnt been done already. This is. If you wa nt to been done already. This is. If you want to study were america might be going in Foreign Policy, now that Rex Tillerson is confirmed and has his feet under the big desk at the State Department, i would get him before a look at the president. Same question to you. Do you think the Administration May be arguably having had its fingers burned like this with russia, will that deter the Trump White House from, you know, going soft on the kremlin, if you like . I think theres going to be some repercussions from this that perhaps are going to bleed into legislative affairs. For many days during the confirmation trials, we have heard people like marco rubio and john mccain think they are deeply uncomfortable with donald trump aligning the United States with russia, or trying to create a new alliance with russia. I think when it comes to legislative matters that will come up over the next weeks and months, if donald trump continues to persist with the pro russian policy, Foreign Policy, he might find that those senators he needs to confirm Supreme Court justices or to push through a repeal and replace of the Affordable Care act, are less receptive to his ideas. Were out of time, but such an interesting subject. Good to talk to both of you. Thank you very much for your time. The government has insisted that us President Donald Trump should be extended the full courtesy of a state visit to britain later this year in response to a 1. 85 million strong petition against it. The Foreign Office said the government recognises the strong views expressed by the many signatories of this petition, but does not support this petition. Support for the call to downgrade mr trumps visit because it would be embarrassing for the queen snowballed after he imposed a travel ban on nationals from seven mainly muslim countries. Joining us from westminster is our Political Correspondent tom bateman. He has the latest on this. The government not changing their mind, perhaps not surprisingly . Thats right. The important thing here is this is not any great new change of position. From the government on Donald Trumps state visit. Nearly a reiteration, repeating their view that the state visit stays on and the invitation will be extended. Interesting language in the response to this position, saying he should be shown the courtesy of having that invitation extended. Also talking about the fact that the government recognises that our strong views on this, despite the fact that it says in effect it does not agree with them. Now, this was something that was added to the petition this morning by the Foreign Office, and it is important to say that all of these petitions that are made to the parliamentary authorities do require a response from the government once they hit just a response from the government once they hitjust 10,000 a response from the government once they hitjust10,000 responses. Obviously, this one did that quite some time ago, so we had that full response from the government this morning. There will still be, or there are still due to be a debate about this among mps a little later this month. Thank you very much indeed. Getting some news in about toshiba, they are reporting enormous losses, billions of Dollars Worth of losses. The chairman of toshiba has resigned. Well bring you more on that with our industry, Respondent Inafew that with our industry, respondent in a few minutes time. Prevent is the name of the governments controversial programme designed to halt the emergence of home grown terrorists. We often hear arguments made for and against it but all too rarely the stories of the individuals it identifies. Stories like the one youll now hear of a ten year old boy, whose questions led him to some of the darkest places on the internet, and eventually to stand up in front of his class in london and declare his support for the terrorists of the so called Islamic State. He was then taken on by the programme and had Case Meetings for over a year. The boy, who we are calling haaruun, has been speaking to our chief correspondent matthew price. Haaruun is a small boy with a round faced and engaged eyes. You can tell that hes intelligent, he asks questions, lots of them. And its that curiosity that got him into trouble in the first place. Haaruuns words are spoken by an actor. I saw on the news the paris attacks. And as soon as that happened, i was on the computer, because i was interested. I searched isis on google and then it came up to the bbc, and then i watched other sites. It led me to this one that had brutal executions, and then burning people. It showed them lighting them on fire, the people chained up, lighting them on fire, then they burned them. There is no typical case that lands on the desks of prevent teams across the country. They work with children, some as young as haaruun, others are teenagers, they work with adults. Since 2012, prevent has dealt with more than 1000 cases, many involve islamist radicalisation. In the last year, around a quarter of referrals were because of concerns about far right extremism. And, it was a far right website seeking to Denigrate IslamWhich Haaruun had come across. And where he was, looking at the brutal is videos. Behind the scenes, unknown to the school, and discovered only by the woman from prevent who ended up working on his case, haaruun was being bullied. He doesnt talk about it much now. Yet some of the children, he says, both muslim and non muslim, labelled him a terrorist. The bullying seems to have played a role in isolating haaruun, and fuelling his interest in is. Gradually, he became an expert in the group, and could name its leadership structure. It was all information that led to that day, when he stood up in class, and declared his sympathy for the so called Islamic State. The headlines. The kremlin is refusing to comment on the resignation of president trumps Security Adviser. Michael flynn stepped down after it emerged he had not told the truth about his conversations with russian contacts. A ten year old boy has died after suffering serious Head Injuries in a topshop store in reading. Police have described it as an incident involving store furniture. Inflation has risen to its highest level since june 2014. The rate, treasured by the Consumer Price index, reach 1. 8 last month, up from 1. 6 in december measured by the Consumer Price index. In the business news. Toshiba chairman Shigenori Shiga has resigned, hours after the Japanese Technology firm revealed details of a multi billion dollar loss. The company had delayed issuing its results, but then said it was set to report a net loss of 390 Billion Yen £2. 76bn in the year to march 2017. The company said it expected to take a 712. 5 billion yen £5 billion, write down at its us nuclear business. Shares have fallen nearly 5 in engine maker rolls royce after it posted a record loss of £4. 6 billion for 2016. However, once one off costs have been stripped out, the companys underlying profit was better than many experts had predicted. Rolls royce agreed to pay £671m to settle Corruption Cases with uk and us authorities and it has written off £4. 4 billion from currency related contracts. The head of theresa mays inquiry into the way millions of people work has said there is evidence businesses are using Self Employment Laws to avoid tax. Matthew taylor told the bbc that he wanted to see a new standard of Fair And Decent work which the public and private sector could sign up to. He said that new flexible ways of working were very good for many businesses and people, but said a complicated tax system and lack of clarity on the law meant that employers and employees often clashed. Inflation in the uk is back at levels not seen since 2014 thanks to the fall in the value of the pound and the rising cost of fuel. The Consumer Prices index rose by 1. 8 over the year to january, up from 1. 6 in the year to december. Further out the Bank Of England is predicting inflation will hit 2. 7 by the year end. The bank has a target rate of 2 which is tries to control by raising and lowering Interest Rates. That target rate is set by the government. Lema komileva is Chief Economist at g market economics. Let us go into some of the reasons. What are the most powerful forces here pushing inflation up . In the short term, the Inflation Figures are not to worry and, although the uptrend has been very steep, the baseis uptrend has been very steep, the base is quite narrow. We are having the effects of energy price declines last year, so base effects and of course the effects of sterling post referendum depreciation. That is pushing up Raw Material Prices down the supply chain. These other categories, energy and food predominantly come about driving the inflation headline. Core inflation is still fairly tame. There is an avalanche of Consumer Price pressures down the supply chain. The effect of Raw Materials are ready causing manufacturers and vendors, Transportation Service providers, to push up prices. We also had the Producer Price index today, which showed Factory Prices are rising by a whopping double digit to 20 . When you come home compare that with 1. 8 , there is more coming down the pipeline. That 2096, factories buying in the Raw Materials and before they sell these things onto retailers and consumers. Along that line, somebody is absorbing that price rise. How long can they continue to do that . That is the big question here. Sooner or later, manufacturers, vendors, retailers will have to start passing on this higher cost to end users, consumers. In the short term of course, the volatility of seasonal discounts, concerns about losing market share, concerns about crowding out consumers is probably preventing vendors from passing on higher costs. Especially once Currency Hedges expire, the costs will begin to bite into profit margins. If companies cannot pass them onto end users, this will probably impact future investment and decisions. One way or another, hiring and decisions. One way or another, hiring decisions. It will either be Price Increases or reduced employment expectations. We can have a quick look at the markets. The ftse has not been doing very much, down ten, after ten. Its fairly static at the moment. We have had some bad results from rolls royce, but on the other hand those shares are reasonably static. The market at the moment, fairly quiet, for the moment. That is all from the business news. Back to you. In case its slipped your mind, it is of course valentines day. Not everyone is celebrating with a significant other. Its estimated that around 40 per cent britons are currently single, with many still trying to find the right person in the modern world. Among them is tinder Stephen Pierre tomlin, whos considered one of the most eligible men on popular dating app tinder. Earlier he spoke with the Victoria Derbyshire programme. Im a model, so i do meet people on my day to dayjob. And i have had a girlfriend in the past. Last valentines, i was on a date. I was on a tv show, and i started seeing my date, but it didnt work out. I find it hard to settle down with the right girl. But youre on tinder because youre looking for love, i presume . Thats correct, yeah. When i find the right girl, im more than happy to settle down. I just havent found that yet. Because i travel a lot for work, i spend half my life in hotel rooms by myself. And it is quite lonely. So its more a practical issue . Yeah. I think being in a relationship with myjob is quite hard, because im constantly travelling, theres trust issues with myjob as well. And i find that being on tinder is quite easy to sort of interact with people sort of like me, in my industry. The headlines are coming up on the bbc news channel. First, we leave you for a look at the weather. On the balcony this valentines day. Thank you very much. A mixed bag to start the day. In the south and west of the uk, rather cloudy and a bit of the uk, rather cloudy and a bit of rain, but that has helped to keep temperature is up. For some of us, we started with something of a cold shoulder. A touch of frost in north yorkshire, but one weather watcher made the most about. You can see we had sunshine, the lowest temperature so far today. Patchy rain across the south west of england and into wales, and northern ireland. That is slowly drifting its way further northwards and eastwards. That rain is on the move, so it should begin to brighten up into the afternoon across cornwall in particular. As it brightens up, a southerly breeze, we should see temperatures getting into double figures, easily 11 or 12. Not much rain on it towards south east of england. Through the midlands, slightly dry if a bit on the cloudy side in the afternoon. Northern ireland a bit damp, but some parts of North Western england and Western Scotla nd of North Western england and Western Scotland doing well. Further east, more ina scotland doing well. Further east, more in a way of cloud, but should stay dry, six or here. Overnight, we see this first line of cloud and patchy rain moving northwards. Another area of rain gets into the far south west. In between the two, some cloud, it may be quite low and some cloud, it may be quite low and some fog. With a southerly breeze, it will keep temperatures up quite nicely. Mostly frost free, except in northern scotland. That spells of sunshine throughout the day tomorrow in scotland. Elsewhere, fairly cloudy, another band of rain moving northwards and eastwards. Brighter in the afternoon, four parter wales in south western england, but with a chance of a few sharp showers. A much better feel to the day as atla ntic much better feel to the day as atlantic air feeds through the uk. We will see temperatures widely in double figures. Atlantic air continues to feed through wednesday night into thursday. A few isobars in the northern half of the country means it will be a bit breezy with outbreaks of rain moving across scotla nd outbreaks of rain moving across scotland in particular. Further south, light wind, a few early fog patches but another pretty mild day, with double figures widely across the uk. Mild atlantic air is still with us, mike beachy first thing on friday, with a few patches of fog as well. A lot of cloud, not much rain. Asimilar well. A lot of cloud, not much rain. A similar look on saturday. Over the rest of this week, it will be noticeably milder. That is only part of the story, because a fair bit of cloud is around which made being some rain at times. Certainly not a wash out. There is plenty more on the bbc weather website. This is bbc news and these are the top stories developing at midday. President Trumps NationalSecurity Adviser resigns over his contacts with russian officials. Its a severe blow to Donald Trumps new administration with questions now being raised over how much the president knew and when. Here, a 10 year old boy has died after suffering serious Head Injuries in a topshop store in reading. Police described it as an incident involving store furniture. Prices are rising at their fastest Rate Sincejune 2014. Mainly as a result of the rising price of fuel. Also this hour, damp, leaks and mould. How thousands of tenants claim compensation for the state of their council homes. Local authorities in england pay out more than £35 million in compensation and legal fees over the last five years for those living in unfit conditions. And disney cuts commercial ties with youtubes biggest star following allegations of anti semetism. Good morning, its tuesday 14th february. Welcome to bbc Newsroom Live. Donald Trumps NationalSecurity Adviser, Michael Flynn, has resigned after it emerged that he misled white house officials about his contacts with the Russian Ambassador. Telephone intercepts apparently show that Michael Flynn, mr Trumps NationalSecurity Adviser, had discussed us sanctions with the russian envoy before mr trump took office. Our correspondent Joshua Rosenberg has been following developments from moscow. He said russian parliamentarians hadnt reacted well to the resignation. There has been quite an angry reaction from senior russian politicians, at the upper house of parliament, the head of the parliaments Foreign AffairsCommittee Posted an interesting message on social media, saying that either donald trump had been driven into a corner or that the new administration was permeated with russia phobia from top to bottom. One of his colleagues tweeted that this was about paranoia and a witchhunt. There has basically been no comment from Vladimir Putin, his spokesman said to journalists on a Conference Call that this was an internal matter for the americans, an internal matter for the Trump Administration, and had nothing at all to do with moscow. I then asked him, yesterday you were happy to comment about this, he did yesterday, saying that there had been no conversations at all between russian and american officials about sanctions before trump took office, but he said, no more comment. The russian political elite are definitely angry. All of this is against a backdrop of russia being accused of effectively trying to get mr trump elected, all those accusations of Cyber Attacks during the campaign, and a perception that Michael Flynn was soft on russia, that he perhaps wanted the sanctions against russia, to be eased. Certainly Michael Flynn was known to the russians, he had spoken openly about the need for closer relations between moscow and washington. He publicly called for the two countries to Work Together to fight terrorism. As you mentioned before, he had met Vladimir Putin, sat at his table at a gala event couple of years ago. Lets speak to our correspondent in washington, gary odonoghue. We will have more on that story and talk to him a little later, in a few minutes. The details about the exact specific incident are still not very clear at all, i have been into the centre behind me here, topshop is on the second floor, the shutters are currently down. There are two Macro Security guards standing outside. The lights are on inside although i did not see any staff or any investigation going on. There are members of the public there, some people expected to go into topshop but with the shutters down they got the message that is not going to happen for some time. The incident itself happened around 4pm yesterday afternoon, the ten year old boy was in the shop, we do not know who with what he was doing. The police say he was involved in an incident where he sustained serious Head Injuries as a result of coming into contact with some store furniture, we do not know what that means, whether something fell on him or he tripped on something. We do know the medical services were cold, he was tended to act the scene by medical staff who We Re Act The Scene by medical staff who were called, they took into the Royal Berkshire hospital where he died of Head Injuries. The next of kin have been informed. Duncan kennedy in reading for us. Lets go back to the news that president trons National Security adviser Michael Flynn has resigned. We had president adviser. We had the this is a setback for the Trump Administration, just a few weeks into his time in the white house, given the background as to what happened here and why he has been forced to resign. Less than a month into Donald Trumps administration, he does not even have his whole cabinet confirmed and he has lost one of his key right hand men. The backdrop is when the stories started to emerge that Michael Flynn was having contact with the Russian Ambassador here in washington, over the sanctions imposed on russia for allegations surrounding its meddling in the us election. You will remember at the end of december, president obama slapped a whole bunch of whole new sanctions and Expeued Bunch of whole new sanctions and expelled diplomats, we now know that Michael Flynn was talking to the russians at the time and Thejustice Department believes they were given indications that those sanctions may not last. That in itself is a huge problem, but he denied he had talked about sanctions. The Vice President went on terrorism and denied he talked about sanctions. And now we learn that those sanctions were talked about and the choice became for donald trump, does he hang on to someone who is a key ally, right from alien the campaign, Michael Flynn was by his side, does he try to hang on the ally or humiliate the Vice President . Is as choice that he made. What are the indications for trumpss from odyssey . Trumps Foreign Policy . Week thought that the Trump Administration would be soft on the russians, does that mean that he will be deterred from Easing Sanctions on russia . There is no doubt that Michael Flynn was going to be one of those key conduits between this administration and moscow. He was known to be friendly, he had been pictured dining at Vladimir Putins table. That had been a source of criticism for money but for others in the mid station it had been a source of strength, his ability to get the Vladimir Putin. Thatll be a blow to what donald trump had talked about, improving relations with russia. But his Secretary Of StateRex Tillerson has a similarly good relations with russia. They have not bring the entire Communications Pathway between russia and washington but they have cut it in half, they have not blown it. There will be concern in moscow about what this says about Donald Trumps resolve, but that he has lost the pro russia voice so quickly in this scandal. Talking about the Cyber Attacks there during and before the American Election campaign. Cyber security is a lwa ys election campaign. Cyber security is always a concern in the united kingdom. Right now, the chancellor, Philip Hammond, is giving a speech at the National CyberSecurity Centre. Cyber attacks that we are seeing are increasing in the frequency, severity and severity. We have already mobilised to attacks on 180 occasions. High Profile Incidents with sony, and Talktalk Have reminded us of the scale of the damage of a single cyber attack. This new centre and its work is vitally important. This is a unique to titian. Our overseas competitors can only dream of the level of interagency cooperation that underpins it and we in britain can be extremely proud to be blazing a trail that others will surely follow. There are three key points that i want to make about the way that i want to make about the way that this centre will approach its task. First, it will notjust focus on protecting against a major attacks on critical infrastructure, but also on raising our Security Capability against day to day malicious cyber activity. Of course the most dramatic threats are the high end sophisticated state sponsored attacks, but the most common threats are the less sophisticated mass targeted attacks from E Mail Viruses to phishing. 83 of businesses are online, the average home has eight devices connected to the internet, which will rise rapidly. This provides enormous potential for day to day attacks, from data theft to online ransom. The ons estimates there were 2 million such incident in the past 12 months alone. If these numbers we re 12 months alone. If these numbers were included in the crime figures, the uks crime rate would double. So the uks crime rate would double. So the ncsc will have a unique role, bringing together the Business Community and the Security Agencies. Second,it community and the Security Agencies. Second, it will focus on partnership. Our intelligence and Security Agencies are the best of the world. Of that i have no doubt. Our digital sector is also the best in the world, contributing a bigger proportion of our gdp every year than any other country in the cheap 20. To underline it, we have the highest proportion of Online Shoppers in europe. What we are doing here is bringing them together. This centre will work hand in hand with industry to keep the uk safe. 65 of Large Businesses reported a cyber breach or cyber attack in the past months. That is 65 that became aware of such a breach or attack. Yet, nine out of ten businesses do not even have an incident Management Plan in the event of a cyber breach. So business has to sharpen its approach, as the scale of the threat from cyber increases and intensified. Just as you would expect a shop on the high street to fix its locks and its burglar alarms, so businesses operating digitally needs to fix their online security. And this centre stands ready, willing and able to help them as they do that. It can be something as simple as providing guidance on things like rand ransom ware and other things so the public can defend themselves or it could be drawing on our most sophisticated capabilities to road test safeguard against more complex threats. Mobilising the resources of public and private sectors to intercept, defeat and mitigate the effects of a concerted cyber assault. Either way, it effects of a concerted cyber assault. Eitherway, it is effects of a concerted cyber assault. Either way, it is a success it will rely on partnerships. The third and final point i want to make is that we are prepared to invest the necessary resources to get this right. We invested £860 million on enhancing our Cyber Defences in the last parliament, another £1. 9 billion to further bolster our armoury against cyber attack in this parliament, as well as developing our offensive cyber capability to deter and if needs be retaliate against those who seek to do us harm in cyberspace, a new and critical domain of our defence. And all of this, of course, is set in the context of our ongoing commitment to meeting the nato pledge to spend 2 of our National Income on defence. At the beginning of this month, the uk signed the nato Cyber Defence memorandum of understanding, so that we can share our expertise with our agency allies and learn from their expenses. And today, i am delighted to announce a partnership closer to home here at this centre. We will invite business to record up to 100 Employ Easter come and work in the National CyberSecurity Centre, Employ Easter to come and work, allowing us to draw on the best and the brightest in the industries, and for these people, to then return to the private sector and draw on their experiences here to drive change within industry. The truly symbiotic partnership. Because government cannot protect business and the general public from the risks of side attack on its own. It has to be a team effort. It is only in this way that we can stay one step ahead of the scale and pace of the threat that we face. I want to thank the staff here at the centre and at gchq and the other agencies for their dedication, commitment, and skill. And i want to thank our Industry Partners and our International Partners and our International Partners for seeming up with government to ensure that the uk becomes truly the safest and most secure place for Digital Business in the future. Thank you. That is the chancellor Philip Hammond is there, just warning about the continuing danger of Cyber Attacks and saying that the British Government is prepared to invest the necessary resources to defend against Cyber Attacks. Uk inflation has risen at its fastest pace in the past two and half years. The office for National Statistics said Consumer Prices rose 1. 8 last month, up from 1. 6 in december. The increase was driven by higher fuel prices and the fall in the value of the pound. Earlier i spoke to erik britton, a director at Financial ConsultancyFathom Consulting, and a former member of the Bank Of Englands Monetary Analysis division. I asked him if these latest figures should worry us. The rise was slightly less than expected by the consensus, we thought it would be 1. 9 . It is the feed through from the fall in the value of sterling that occurred after the brexit referendum, and there is more of that to come, with Headline Inflation going up to about 3 over the next year, maybe a bit more. That is quite a lot compared to what we have had. Yes, but it is not that big of a deal. The Bank Of England, the mpc in the past has not changed Interest Rates with Inflation Running at four or 5 , right after the global recession. And for similar reasons, it is to do with the fall of the value of sterling, and higher Importing Prices rather than domestically generated inflation which is what the bank wants to keep an eye on and keep under control. As far as that goes, there is no problem. The chairman of the Japanese Electronics conglomerate toshiba has resigned, following the news that the company suffered a net loss this year of 3. 4 billion. Shigenori shiga announced he was stepping down shortly after the the company delayed an announcement of its financial results. Meanwhile, toshiba says it remains committed to building the Moorside Nuclear plant in britain. That is despite the huge loss we have heard about covering the chairmans resignation. With me is our industry correspondentjohn moylan. That will be a relief for people there who may be employed in that plant in cumbria, that that is going ahead despite these absolutely catastrophic losses by the cricket. Yes, toshiba is one of the great pillars of japanese industry, yes, toshiba is one of the great pillars ofjapanese industry, and it has had a shambolic 24 hours. It was due to come out with its nine month results at 3am uk time, these ended up results at 3am uk time, these ended up being delayed, it then had to ask the authorities if it could delay its mothers for a month while it was audited. Meanwhile its numbers. Meanwhile the chairman resigned and its Production Guidance numbers saying that the company has taken a massive loss in the us because of a company that it bought. It is 6 billion or lost. It will fall so much into a loss that it will wipe away the equity in the firm which raises questions about the future. The last thing we were expecting is some clarity on its uk operations but we have received it. Toshiba is also the lead partner in a Joint Venture project to build a new Nuclear Plant in cumbria close to sellafield, a massive project, the biggest new Nuclear Power plant in europe, three reactors, £15 billion, 20,000 Jobs Associated with it, a massive economic boost cumbria. Within the last few minutes, we have had a statement from the consortium which toshiba lead saying they acknowledge that toshiba has looked at the future of its Nuclear Operations around the world and concluded that review, and that it remains committed to developing the project in moorside. It is an extraordinary statement of clarity for a company which has had a pretty shambolic morning. It is but some people may still have their doubts that a company that much, losing that a company that much, losing that much money, billions and billions, has got the cash to go ahead with that investment. What we do not know is what role toshiba will play. It is at the moment supplying the reactor technology. The big question is, Would Toshiba Wa Nts to the big question is, would toshiba wants to build this plant and take on the Construction Risk . That seems highly unlikely. We awake to see what role toshiba will have. The consortium has been seeking other investors as well, there has been a lot of speculation there could be a south korean firm becoming an investor, but for now the project is on track and it would appear toshiba remains part of it. From a political point of view, the government will be Breathing A Sigh of relief, there had been a lot of pressure on government to be on the sidelines and step in and save this project if it was going to withdraw, like pretty. Also this proposed project is in the constituency of copeland where there will be a pretty hard fought where there will be a pretty hard fought by election next where there will be a pretty hard fought by election next week. So there are political applications, we will leave it there. The eus Brexit Negotiator has called for profound reform of the European Union, saying it always delivers too little, too late. Guy verhofstadt said the union had failed to tackle issues including the migrant crisis and economic stagnation. He also citied brexit, trump and putin as reasons to reform the European Union. The European Union needs also a profound reform again, because lets face the reality our union is in crisis. Our European Union doesnt have a lot of friends not at home, and certainly also not abroad. And the union doesnt deliver any more. Its always too little, too late. And that is in my opinion the reason why many people and many citizens are angry in europe. They are not against europe, they are against a union that doesnt deliver the right results, that is not capable, for example, to find the right answers to the refugee crisis, that is not capable to give answers to the migration flows, that is not capable to break down the economic stagnation after the financial crisis of 2008. Brexit, trump, putin, i think are reasons enough to reform our European Union, and to do it in a very profound way. That is the eu Brexit Negotiator, lets talk to our europe correspondent. Some pretty strong words from him there, saying the eu does not deliver the right results, how significant are these remarks . think they are interesting, guide the host that stands where he has a Lwa Ys The Host that stands where he has always stood on these issues, he thinks that the eu is not working as well as it should but he has a particular prescription for fixing it which is where britain was going to continue to be a member of the eu, never stood well with british politicians because mr verhofstadt things that you can fix europe by making the european institutions like the commission more powerful and the individual state institutions, like their parliaments, less powerful, stopping countries from being able to opt out of eu deals, for example, as they have been able to do in the past. So mr verhofstadts point is not that the eu is not working and that therefore somehow you should give up hope, it is that you should reinforce its institutions, make it stronger and then it would be able to deliver. In terms of brexit, which she sees as one of the seismic shocks affecting the continent, he is not exactly the eus chief negotiator, he is going to represent parliament in negotiations led by the european commission. So that is a complex point about structures here and about how the whole European Architecture fits together. He is somewhere in the Brexit Process but not at the heart of it, but at the top of it. Still significant figure, though. Thank you very much. One person has been killed and several injured in a train crash in luxembourg. It will feel wednesday and temperatures widely will be into double figures. This is bbc Newsroom Live. The headlines at 12 30pm. President Trumps NationalSecurity Adviser, Michael Flynn, has resigned after misleading the Vice President about the extent of his contacts with russian leaders. A 10 year old boy has died after suffering serious Head Injuries at the high street store, topshop, in reading. Police say the boy died after an incident involving store furniture. Inflation has risen to 1. 8 its highest rate in 2. 5 years. The rising cost of fuel and food coupled with a fall in the value of the pound has contributed to the increase. Council houses deemed unfit to live in have cost local authorities over £35 million in compensation and legal fees according to a bbc investigation. The report found that around 11,000 claims have been made in the last five years. The queen has opened a new centre designed to improve britains resilience against Cyber Attacks. And disney has cut commercial ties with youtubes biggest star following allegations of anti semetism. More now on donald Trumps NationalSecurity Adviser, Michael Flynn, who has resigned over his contacts with russia. General flynn discussed american sanctions with the Russian Ambassador before mr trump took office, and is accused of misleading the Vice President about what happened. Earlier i spoke to dr Michael Cullinane, Associate Professor in us history at Northumbria University, and also the american journalist and broadcaster michael goldfarb, who firstly explained how Michael Flynns resignation came about. In december, having been presented by his own security and intelligence agencies proof of russian meddling in the election, president obama extended sanctions against the regime of Vladimir Putin. On the very day that obama did that, mike flynn had a meeting with the Russian Ambassador in the United States, and he said, well, itsjust a transition period thing, its a courtesy call, in myjob i need to know all the players. But it was alleged that he had discussed these very sanctions, and said, dont worry about them because as soon as donald trump is president , officially, well remove the sanctions. And he denied saying that. He was asked by the Vice President , mike pence, who was investigating on behalf of the president , exactly what was said these conversations. He denied it to mike pence. And then, through some pretty vigorous reporting by the by the Washington Post, it came out that in fact he had said precisely what was alleged. And at that moment his position became untenable and he had to resign. And just very quickly, well, there is a law against it, isnt there, this convention that if youre a private citizen, you cant conduct diplomacy for america . Yes, and i dont think anyone has ever been prosecuted under this act, but. And it has happened. In 1968, while Lyndon Johnson was trying to negotiate an end to the vietnam war, richard nixon, who was still a private citizen at that point, a candidate for the presidency, opened a back channel to the South Vietnamese and said, dont carry on with the peace talks. If nixon gets elected, youll get a better deal. Thats what its meant to prevent. I dont know that this rises to quite the same level, but, you know, youre negotiating with russia, who is at the moment americas biggest antagonist on the world stage. Michael cullinane, is that the way you see it . Is this evidence im sure it will be taken as evidence by many people who dont like the Trump Administration that the Trump White House is effectively soft on russia . Well, i think it is. I think that this is definitely evidence, i think youve heard other concerns about other Cabinet Members, like Rex Tillerson as well, about their connections with russia. But i think more importantly, it does show that the Trump Administration doesnt really get Foreign Relations yet, the logistics of it, the protocols of it. But also, theyre opening up a relationship with russia, and at the very same time, theyre closing off a relationship with one of russias closest allies, iran, and putting sanctions on iran. It just seems completely disjointed. And i have no idea, as someone who studied us Foreign Policy, what exactly the Trump Administration is trying to do here. What do you think the Trump Administrations trying to do here . I mean, i guess with those informal contacts, if you look at it charitably, they were trying through back channels to establish their policy with russia before the administration got going . Well, i think theres two levels here. And i think Michael Cullinane touches on one of them. Since taking office, the reality of russias close relationship with iran, particularly in the war in syria, where russia and iran are working to prop up bashar al assad. And this is almost against american interests, because the Trump Administration has a strong anti iran bias at the moment. Theres that level, but then theres the other level, which is the long standing contacts between donald trump the businessman over more than a decade with Business Interests in russia. Now, we dont know what those details are, and i think that the prying out of mike flynn from his administration is only the tip of an iceberg. I think theres a lot more to know about trumps Business Relationships with russia and how much more they continue. Michael cullinane, its quite interesting how all of this came to light. Obviously, it leaked out, was investigated by the Washington Post newspaper. It shows how tough, actually, the Trump Administration are going to find things . Thats right. I think the thing to take away from this is that the national bureaucracy has real power. Although were seeing people put into position that feel that they can take on the role of leading departments like the State Department, or say, for example, the National Security apparatus. In reality, people that donald trump has disaffected within the National Security community, the intelligence community, this is how they fight back. They leak material to the press, and that compromises Donald Trumps ambitions in and around Foreign Policy. So, theyre very powerful. This is indeed how other scandals in American History have broken, like watergate, when you had a cia assistant who broke the story, or leaked information to the journalists at the Washington Post. And were seeing the same here. Donald trump, if he intends to be a successful president and have some Foreign Policy which is actually coherent, hes going to need to get a handle on those offices. That was the Associate Professor in us history in Northumbria University and the american journalist talking to me earlier on. The internet celebrity felix kjellberg, known as pewdiepie earned £12 million last year and enjoyed a lucrative contract with disney. But following allegations of anti semetism, disney has cut off commercial ties. Here is pewdiepie, in one of his online videos. Hows it going . My name is pewdiepie, and welcome to. I asked you this week for suggestions on what to do, and many, many of you we re what to do, and many, many of you were saying draw my life. Apparently, its a new thing all The Cool Kids do, i havent kept up with it as always. But i tried and failed i didnt have a lot of time to do it. So dont be hating, or skating. You can skate. Im going to show it to you, and yeah. How is it going . My name is. Pewdiepie. There he is, pewdiepie. Big brands like disney rely on Internet Celebrities such as pewdiepie to reach out to a segment of the population that they would otherwise struggle to tap into. But what happens when those Internet Celebrities go on to Say Something the brand disagrees with or finds offensive . With me is guy bisson, Research Director at ampere analysis. Thank you for being with us. Tell us more about who is pewdiepie for those who dont follow him on youtube, and why he has proved to be so controversial. Pewdiepie is the worlds biggest youtube star. He is a Video Game Commentator who is well known for his edgy commentary while he is playing video games. He has become much more than that, he isa has become much more than that, he is a brand in his own right, and that brand and talent has spread beyond youtube, across many digital platforms. So, disney were keen to sign him up . Disney acquired an asset which was a so called multichannel network. These are u tube aggregators, effectively. With that came the talented pewdiepie. He is their biggest talent, but it is essential for brands like dizzy to be able to access a younger audience through these assets. So now they have dropped like disney. These assets. So now they have dropped like disney. They have a p pa re ntly dropped like disney. They have apparently dropped him for his comments. I think its not conducive for a brand like disney in particular making these sort of comments through their content and to be associated with that brand, even though the brand was slightly separate from disney itself. suppose from their point of view, from disneys point of view, he has gone from asset to the liability. From disneys point of view, he has gone from asset to the liabilitym in interesting question. I think liability might be too strong a word. I think there is enough Brand Disassociation between disney and the pewdiepie assets, one of his channels for example. In terms of the impact on disney itself, it will be minimal. There are plenty of other u tube talent out there, and many other platforms beyond Youtube Pewdiepie talents. Many other platforms beyond Youtube Pewdiepie talents. Is it indicated that these big corporations want to associate themselves with people who are reaching young people on the internet, often through youtube and the like . That is exactly what it is about. We can see that among a certain demographic, these stars are as big as ryan gosling or madonna. They are absolutely massive stars in their own right. They are worth millions of pounds in revenue each year. In order to reach that young audience, Notjust Disney but many major studios, many of the major channel brands are investing in content assets bring them that audience. Fascinating. 53 million subscribers, i think. Audience. Fascinating. 53 million subscribers, ithink. Thats audience. Fascinating. 53 million subscribers, i think. Thats right. Thank you for being with us. Very good to talk to you. Local authorities in england have paid out more than 35 Million Pounds in compensation and legal fees to tenants who are living in unfit council homes. A bbc investigation found that around 11,000 claims have been brought in the last five years. Anna crossley reports. It is completely mouldy and the Wall Underneath is completely wet. And even our shoes are mouldy as well. As you can see here. Its horrible. Katrina pays Leeds City Council around £270 a month to live in a flat which is riddled with mould. Although she has not taken the council to court, hundreds of other tenants have. Like ewans mum, anne. She says he and his brother sound like this all the time, even though they dont have colds. She claims it is because their rented house in leeds is so damp. Social housing in leeds has such a Bad Reputation that claims Management Companies are now targeting the city, encouraging tenants to take the council to court. These firms identify properties which are in a poor state of repair and then, for a finders fee, pass on the tenants details to a solicitor who takes on the case. In a statement, Leeds City Council said. At a time when services are being cut, many will question why councils are spending millions on compensation instead of fixing the problems in the first place. Some news coming into as about north korea. This is the strange half brother of the north Korean Leader. Reuters news agency as saying that this is strange half brother of the north Korean Leader has actually been killed while he was in malaysia. They are quoting south korean government sources telling them that. Kim jong korean government sources telling them that. He was then taken on by the prevent programme and had meetings with a caseworker for almost a year. It led me to this one that had brutal executions, and them burning people. It showed them lighting them on fire, the people chained up, lighting them on fire, then they burned them. There is no typical case that lands on the desks of prevent teams across the country. They work with children, some as young as haaruun, others are teenagers. They work with adults. The headlines on bbc Newsroom Live the kremlin is refusing to comment on the resignation of president Trumps National security advisor. General Michael Flynn stepped down after it emerged he hadnt told the truth about his conversations with russian contacts. In case its slipped your mind, it is of course valentines day. If youve forgotten to buy a gift, then how about writing your own love letter . Newlyweds polly and joe have done just that. Jayne mccubbin has been to meet the loved up couple. This is a love story about polly and joe, a fairytale romance which led toa wedding. 0k. Thats me and joe kissing. It was my best, my best, favourite part of it. Tell me how you met. 0k. You got your legs tangled on a chair leg. You saved my life. I tried to, yes, i tried. You have changed my life upside down. So today, on valentines day, polly has written a love letter. Dearjoe. I am sitting here with my mum, talking about wedding stuff, like a fairytale story. And i look at the photo album, and guess what . It makes me feel a bit scared. Oh, my goodness, we are going to get married pollys birth was treated as the start of a story that couldnt possibly have a happy ending. Midwives suggested her mum might be best giving her up. Polly might be better off in care. How wrong they were. I have never felt this way before. I like the way you hold my hand. I like the way you put your arms around me. You feel like a very strong person. And i want to spend my life being with you at all times. When polly was born, we never imagined that she would meet a handsome prince called joe, and fall in love, and get married, and live happily ever after. And it has happened, and we are very proud of her, and joe as well. I want to do it again, i want to do it again they fill everybodys lives with joy. They are so happy together, and that happiness radiates onto other people. It feels like loves dream, the best thing in the whole wide world. So this is polly and joes story. I love you. That word a story about love and hope and acceptance, and the importance of recognising that everyone, but everyone, can have. Both a happy ever after. Lovely valentines day sorry. Of course, plenty of single people this valentines day. Among them is Stephen Pierre tomlin, whos considered one of the most eligible men on popular dating app tinder. Stephen looking for love. From valentines day to vegetables. For many years now, the vegetable orchestra has been making music with carrots, cabbages and red peppers. It travels the world, but bethany bell caught up with the musicians. This is an orchestra, but not as you know it. All of these vegetables will be musical instruments, freshly made for each concert by the vegetable orchestra. We have very simple instruments and we have very complex instruments with other vegetables. The simplest are the ready made that you buy on the market. This is the leek violin. This is the violin part, this is the bow and then rubbing against each other. The performance part is also a big part in the vegetable orchestra, of course. Its not only the music but then also the performance and how we use these instruments. This is a very important part. Its a fantastic sound. How did you come up with that . Was that your invention . I dont know, sometimes its boring, we have a lot of time to wait for the show. Then we see it, we eat carrots, we eat peppers, and then the idea is coming and you build an instrument. So its a constantly work in progress . Yes, constantly. The Research Part is the most interesting part, from my opinion, because you find always new universe of sounds in between these leaves and growing material. Well, when the instruments are made, there are, of course, a lot of leftovers and these are made into a soup which is given to the audience at the end of a concert. Proving that you can play with your food before you eat it. Time for the weather. We have some changes in the weather, not as windy as yesterday. The cloud is in a different place as well. This is a snapshot of yesterday lunchtime. 24 hours later, the cloud is up from the south west and continuing to work its way northwards through today. And overnight as well. There is still sunshine around, a lovely day in north east lincolnshire. To contrast the blue sky with grey sky in gloucestershire, very different from the weather yesterday. That band of cloud is pushing northwards and eastwards, bringing some showery bursts of rain. Behind it, some sunshine already in cornwall. That should push into devon as well, boosting temperatures. More cloud pushing across the midlands, wales, the rest of southern england and there may be some rain, too. Lincolnshire, much of norfolk, suffolk and Northern England enjoying sunshine. Some low cloud on the pennines on the coast, showery bursts of rain here and dry in scotland. The best of the sunshine in the west, were to be lovely valentines day. Cloud increases overnight as showery bits and pieces of rain heading northwards and eastwards. Misty weather and low cloud behind, and then more rain arriving in the south west later on. A mild night, except in northern scotland, where we have clearer skies. There maybe a touch of frost. The theme through the rest of the week is the mildness. It will feel a bit warmer, as well. There will be rain from time to time, too one weather front, one weather system moving out of overnight. The next band of showery rain coming over wales and the south west, that could turn heavier as it heads eastwards into the afternoon. We could have patchy rain across Northern Areas of the uk. Not a great deal of sunshine, the best of it behind that rain across wales and the south west, but a warm feeling day. Temperatures widely in double figures. The Bigger Picture as we had through wednesday into thursday, this low pressure will drive some wetter, windier weather across the northern half of uk overnight. A bomb of higher pressure in the south means it will be dry across england and wales, for the most part on thursday. The chilly start, perhaps a mistand thursday. The chilly start, perhaps a mist and fog patches to. The wetter weather clearing over scotla nd wetter weather clearing over scotland and northern ireland, it should brighten up.
