But there are reports the white house has chosen a very different kind of policy. These were the the scenes in liverpool last night in spite of the tougher restrictions that were brought in. Well hear from a gym owner in the city who is refusing to close his doors. Hello, im Laura Trevelyan in washington, Christian Fraser is in london. President trump is bouncing back after his coronavirus infection, and heads to iowa tonight, trying to make up for lost time. But the fact hes having to shore up support in iowa, a state he won by nine points in 2016 is telling. It suggests that republicans think the hawk eye state could be in play, 20 days before the election. At his rallies this week in florida and pennsylvania, supporters have packed in, without any regard for the social distancing rules. And again tonight the president will be flouting white house guidance. Social gatherings in iowa are supposed to be limited to 25 people. The president tells them there is nothing to be afraid of. But that message is not landing so well with seniors or suburban white women. As our north america editorjon sopel reports. Music love train by the ojays. It is the morning aqua aerobics class, and these elderly ladies are being invited by the instructor to join the love train. But once they get out of the water, it will be the incessant demands to board either the trump train or the biden bandwagon. But they dont seem happy travellers, as i discovered at an impromptu focus group. How many of you just want this election to be over . Cheering. Laughter. They all live at the villages, americas biggest retirement community. And when i say big, i mean humongous. It has a population of 130,000, it covers an area bigger than southampton, and sprawls over five postcodes. The preferred mode of transport golf carts. And early voting is under way. The grey vote is critical for Donald Trumps reelection. But not all republicans are seeing it as black and white. I am thinking that joe biden will win. Does that make you happy or unhappy . Actually i prefer the republican platform, so i am voting for the republican platform is what im voting for. Not necessarily trump but the platform. This is a very important election and i made sure that my democratic joe biden vote got in early and on time. Are you confident he might win . Yes. Can you be confident with the might . Im confident he will. Im confident he will the parties know how these are doing in these postal votes, and democrats have a spring in their step. The votes that have been cast so far are all vote by mail. And the return is higher than ever before. And well over 50 are democratic. And that says to me that the momentum that we Felt Building to this moment is still there is still growing. Four years ago, donald trump won a huge victory here in the villages. But the latest polls suggest that joe biden is well ahead amongst the over 65s. And if that turns out to be true on polling day, that could be the difference between success and failure in florida. Butjust like four years ago, the republicans are saying dont believe everything you read in the polls. Trump is a bombastic personality. A lot of people really appreciate that. A lot of people like it if you ask somebody a question, you get an answer. And donald trump will give you an answer. And i think a lot of people appreciate that. Not a blade of grass out of place. It looks genteel. But dont be fooled. There is a vicious and unrelenting fight going on that wont stop until november the 3rd. Jon sopel, bbc news, florida. You may have noticed from jons report there is a rather unsubtle appealfrom both candidates right now, to those groups they believe might make the difference in tight Battle Ground races. Seniors, suburban women, Blue Collar Workers and catholics. Catholic voters could be an important bloc in several Battle Ground states this cycle, and bidens campaign is highlighting his faith if elected, he would be the countrys second catholic president , 60 years after John F Kennedy became the first. Heres the ad the Biden Campaign has released. My campaign has released. Father would say the cardir of my father would say the cardinal sin of all sins is the abuse of power. Weather it is a man raising his hand toa woman, weather it is a man raising his hand to a woman, weather it is the government abusing his power, basic essential elements of what constitutes catholicism. Lets bring in professor mark rozell, hes the author of catholics and us politics after the 2016 elections and is dean of the shar school of policy and government at george mason university. Thank you so much for being with us. How significant a factor do you think the catholic vote was in Donald Trumps 2016 victory, especially in the midwest . Donald trumps 2016 victory, especially in the midwest7m Donald Trumps 2016 victory, especially in the midwest . It was very important. It was really understated in most of the postelection analysis. That focus very heavily on the white evangelical vote for donald trump, which was somewhere around 81 . But like so much of other analyses was the fact that donald trump a one a slight majority of catholic voters in 2016, and that was critically important in the three great lake states that he won by merely 80,000 votes combined, pennsylvania, michigan and wisconsin, states that have fairly significant older catholic populations, and output to put this in a quick historical perspective, going back to the early 19805, perspective, going back to the early 1980s, the perspective, going back to the early 19805, the us perspective, going back to the early 1980s, the us National Popular vote and the catholic vote have tracked very closely with each other. The candidate who was a popular vote wednesday catholic vote. The catholics are close to one quarter. Of the voting population. In 2016 for the first time in a very long time, there was a split with Hillary Clinton was the popular vote, but donald trump wednesday catholic vote. Fascinating. He won. That is probably why we are seeing republicans showcasing the faith of their nominee to the Supreme Court, Amy Coney Barrett, less listening to senator Lindsey Graham speaking about just that. This is senator Lindsey Graham speaking aboutjust that. This is history being made, folks. This is the first time in American History that we have nominated a woman who is unashamedly pro life and embraces her faith without apology and she is going to the court seat at the table waiting on you. So professor, a republicans hoping that if they nominatejudge barrett republicans hoping that if they nominate judge barrett to republicans hoping that if they nominatejudge barrett to the court that may help also shore up the catholic vote . I think that may be overstating it on their part quite frankly because catholic identity is not as important a factor in voting decisions. Then say it was for my pa rents decisions. Then say it was for my parents generation, who thought of john kennedy as really breaking new ground in american politics. But thatis ground in american politics. But that is simply not the case was that we had another president ial nominee, john kerry, who was catholic in 2004. But he lost the catholic vote toa 2004. But he lost the catholic vote to a methodist george w. Bush. So it isa to a methodist george w. Bush. So it is a late night religious identity driving catholic voters. There are other factors i driving catholic voters. There are otherfactors i think driving catholic voters. There are other factors i think that im driving catholic voters. There are otherfactors i think that im much more important. This Supreme Court nominee is very important to conservative catholics who tend to prioritise the social or so called moral issues such as abortion and i think this will stoke some of their activism and get out there vote and thatis activism and get out there vote and that is very important for donald trump. But you have catholics who disagree quite profoundly and they tend to prioritise different types of issues, not just tend to prioritise different types of issues, notjust the so called socially moral issues but social injustice issues. Such as aid to the poor and the like and better treatment of immigrants coming into this country. So there really is a divide within the catholic amenity just as there is with much of the country. And what really is important is how catholics prioritise policy issues. |j important is how catholics prioritise policy issues. I think your point but it has been quite noticeable this week that they have tiptoed around Amy Coney Barretts faith, the democrats, largely when talking about roe versus wade and womens right to choose, of course thatis womens right to choose, of course that is a big issue for democrats but they havent gone very hard on her faith but they havent gone very hard on herfaith in but they havent gone very hard on her faith in that seems to be intentional. It is intentional. The president really late a trip wire for the democrats here and nominating a very conservative catholic to the Supreme Court and democrats have to be extremely careful how they present their issues in opposition to much of her judicial philosophy, and not the cioss judicial philosophy, and not the cross that line, lease the public mind, by questioning that somehow her religious faith and commitment by questioning her position on judicial issues. And that is not an easy differentiation to make on some of these Critical Issues that are really important to the Supreme Court, such as the Affordable Care act and abortion rights where Many Democrats are really concerned that the roe v wade 1973 decision establishing the legality of abortion in america is potentially on the line in the next several yea rs. On the line in the next several years. A crucial issue. Thank you very much for your perspective. It might not be known amongst a lot of people that he carries a rosary in his pocket, joe biden, and in his early life, and consider the priesthood. As catholic faith very important to him. Heres a number today, 62 of catholics said it was very important have a president who lives a moral and ethical life. According to the pew research centre. I wonder whether older catholics think you know what, we have got what we wanted out of this president , three Supreme Court justices out of 14 year term, and 110w justices out of 14 year term, and now they just might justices out of 14 year term, and now theyjust might have more difficulty getting past the president s personality flaws. It is a very good question. But i cant tell you that a number of people of faith have said to me that god works through imperfect figures. Specifically referencing donald trump. He has for example been compared to king david, iflied biblical figure compared to king david, iflied biblicalfigure who compared to king david, iflied biblical figure who nonetheless compared to king david, iflied biblicalfigure who nonetheless is compared to king david, iflied biblical figure who nonetheless is a man after gods own heart. So i remember crucially back in 2016, speaking to a room full of people and women said to me will hold our noses and vote for donald trump because we could get three Supreme Court justices and because we could get three Supreme Courtjustices and guess what, they did. 0rthey are courtjustices and guess what, they did. Or they are about to. In the last hour. In the last hour the french president Emmanuel Macron has announced that a curfew will be imposed on the paris region and eight other cities from saturday. The curfew will mean people cant be outside their homes from nine at night until 6am though work and school arent affected. Mr macron says during the curfew theres no going to restaurants or visiting friends. There are other countries moving in a similar direction. The netherlands returns to pa rtial lockdown tonight. Cafes, bars and restaurants are to be shut from 10pm for at least four weeks in an effort to get the virus under control. It is though a matter of huge debate whether these measures are the right way forward. And today there were reports in the Washington Post that the white house is pursuing a very different policy. The Great Barrington declaration was drawn up by three epidemiologists from harvard, oxford, and stanford universities as immunity builds in the population, they say the risk of infection to all including the vulnerable falls. We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity. One of the chief proponents of this approach is scott atlas, a neuro radiologist who joined the white house in august as a pandemic adviser. Here he is injuly, speaking to fox news, about herd immunity. Dr Martin Kulldorff is one of the co authors of the Great Barrington declaration hes a professor of medicine at Harvard University and hejoins us now. There to have you with us. I know you are at the white house last week meeting mr atlas and dhs secretary. How much weight do you think youre taxing your documents has had a number white house policy . Your documents. We met with secretary atlas and is building but the thinking and the declaration is very similarto thinking and the declaration is very similar to the thinking that scott atlas has mentioned before it became a white house adviser and that many other Infectious Disease epidemiologist are in favour of. So this is nothing strange or something new. It is the same proposals that we re new. It is the same proposals that were in the various pandemic preparedness documents in Different Countries in europe had prepared for before the pandemic. The trouble is, according to the leslie, theres only been around 10 of the United States that is been affected and what we have come at 216 thousand deaths, so to get the herd immunity, 60 or 70 come if you do the simple math, he means youre going to have to have something like1 million or a one half thats into you get herd immunity. Those numbers are nonsense. We know that may be 10 of antibodies but we also know that the number of people are immune are more than the people of antibodies. Also, no respectable epidemiologist will claim a certain percentage, you make your 60 or 70 , no body will claim that a certain percentage is needed for herd immunity. Nobody would claim. Have you had the chance to put your ideas to doctor Anthony Fauci . He says heart amenity is only possible after a massive death toll around the world. He says herd immunity. That is not correct. I have not talked to doctor fauci. What happens is mortality, the covid 19 has a huge difference in risk mortality by age. Everybody can get affected, but more than 1000 fold difference in risk for mortality between the oldest and the youngest. So if we have a strategy of not protecting anybody come over to have a lot of mortality because a lot of old people will be affected. If we have a strategy that protects eve ryo ne if we have a strategy that protects everyone equally, we are placing the pandemic forward in time but we will still have a lot of old people getting infected because everybody is getting equally and a lot of mortalities because we push forward in time. What we are proposing in oui in time. What we are proposing in our declaration is focused protection. We must protect the elderly compel if we can protect the elderly, while the young people and children live life more normally, then we will have very few older people getting infected, while more young people and that will reduce mortality and we will have low mortality and we will have low mortality compared to the numbers that you mention. Thank you for joining us. Just a bit of news weve just learned of in the last 20 minutes or so Donald Trumps youngest son has had coronavirus. This is the statement that Melania Trump posted on twitter, talking about barron. How many is that from the rose garden event last saturday . I think thatis garden event last saturday . I think that is 305i garden event last saturday . I think that is 3051 would say. 35. Interesting. For those watching, we will be right back. In the last week, Northern Ireland has reported the highest rates of infection in the uk and from 6pm on friday it will have the toughest restrictions in the country. All pubs and restaurants, hairdressers and beauticians, will have to close for a month. And shops will not be allowed to sell alcohol after 8pm. Schools will shut for two weeks, one of them being the half term holiday. Ta keways are allowed and shops will stay open. Places of worship and childcare facilties will stay open as long as covid measures are observed. Emma vardy is in belfast. A lot of pubs, restaurants and other businesses here were just starting to find their feet again, so todays announcement did feel like a real step back. But, even so, the picture is stark. Parts of Northern Ireland that had seen some of the lowest numbers of covid cases have now seen themselves with the highest. There was real tension in the devolved government here about reimposing blanket restrictions, particularly over the closure of schools. Last night liverpool became the first city in the uk to be put under the tightest restrictions. As part of the governments new three tier system. But take a look at these scenes last night as pubs were closing at 10pm. Not exactly a calm and orderly exit liverpools mayor said the scenes shamed his city. But why is liverpool the only part of the uk with tier three restrictions . The liverpool city region, here in red, only has a marginally higher rate of infection per 100,000 people than manchester. The department of health has told the bbc that a number of factors, including how quickly the cases are rising, the age of those infected and the pressures on local Health Services are behind the decision. Not everyone in the region is agreeing to follow the restrictions Chris Ellerby hemmings is the owner of empowerfit gym and today has told his existing members he will be staying open. He joins with his co owners. Good to have you with us. I am hugely sympathetic to the position you find yourself in. Especially when i know so many gym owners have jump when i know so many gym owners have jump through hoops to make it safe for their members. Just wondering though how are you going to stay open if the director from the mayor and the government is for you to close . Wa nt to and the government is for you to close . Want to be fine . First of all, im talking on behalf of 70 gyms across merseyside that if they open today. I want to introduce our other half owner with us. We all stayed open today. 0ther gems there too. This decision wasnt taken lightly. We spent a long time decided to do this. We spoke about in depth and would look at the evidence. I want to talk about three points of what why we have done this. The first one is evidence. And why gyms are actually the safest sector that has been spoken about. I wa nt to sector that has been spoken about. I want to move on to physical and mental well being of our members and also talk about businesses and survival. Of course everybody is talking about businesses and survival. So the comments on social media today are quite negative thinking that we were just doing this for survival. Were definitely not. If anybody wants to do some googling on our company, we are not making much money. We are here for passion in here for the community. We area passion in here for the community. We are a Community Based business. I wa nt to we are a Community Based business. I want to skip that point to go straight to the evidence which is the most important thing. Which is not our opinion, not the 70 gyms that are closed opinion, it is backed by evidence. It is backed by david lloyd some a huge gym chain and backed by purejunk im a huge gym chain, uk active, and our local government which is quite interesting. In canada, though, a gym has been linked to an outbreak that affected 61 people. Would you be concerned if there was an outbreak that affected 61 people in your gym . If it was in the uk, the guests come and if they give us the evidence in the uk we would close. The gyms are only responsible for 1. 796 the gyms are only responsible for 1. 7 of transmissions where i should have education barely 60 and they stay open a hospitality are 25 and restaurants are 90 but we have to close. Those 22 million gym visitors come in and out of those visitors, we only had 78 cases, so this is an unjust closing. When we look at the evidence, the evidence in the uk, the question is about the world, and the question is about the world, and the uk the evidence is suggesting that we should not be closed at all which is similar to ireland and the situation there. While we are asking for is a pause of the closure and for is a pause of the closure and for our Prime Minister and our government to look at the evidence and then presented properly and of course, if we are close, we will close straightaway if the evidence is presented in a proper way. And all the other gyms that stayed open. Thank you both forjoining us. We appreciate your time. Early voting getting under way. As early voting is under way in dozens of states there are concerns that an age old problem has re appeared. Critics say cuts to the number of polling stations, strict demands for certain id, the purges of electoral rolls, are making it harder for people to cast their vote. And the allegation is that black people are worst affected by the changes. 0ur correspondent larry madowo reports from atlanta. Waiting for hours. Along lines at polling locations in the primary elections in georgia injune. I have covered elections and other democracies in africa like nigeria and south africa. Where america is seen as a beacon of democracy. But for some of the citizens, like here in the heart of atlanta, it is a game of cards. And they have been dealt a bad hand. We may have posted a lot of votes will be suppressed, and they gave us every region they can use to strike the ballot, like felonies or signatures and that. 0fficials felonies or signatures and that. Officials at the georgias largest cou nty officials at the georgias largest county are looking for redemption after accusations of Voter Suppression. Fulton rolled out a mobile voting unit to use serve voters who have been frustrated too many times. How are you . I am good. The first in the state of georgia . Yes, sir. We are very proud of it. But a voting station on wills wont driveaway strict identification laws, and make it harderfor minorities to vote. Long lines, missing ballots, inviting machine failures at the primary election we re failures at the primary election were also widely criticised as insta nces were also widely criticised as instances of Voter Suppression. Nearly 200,000 people were incorrectly removed from the states voter role in 2019, according to the American Civil Liberties union of georgia. A lot of the rules that seem to be reasonable if you are a middle class person, who works a white collarjob and drives a car, are end it being Voter Suppression from the point of view of a person who moves a lot in low income and working minimum wage job. Those fighting it documented what they consider Voter Suppression hearsay some tactics are deliberate and others just sheer incompetence, but they say these are all signs of a fragile democracy. They consider a battle with fighting because civil rights in this country have come too far to turn back. Thats worth fighting. 0fficial some 80 of people will vote early or by absentee ballot. Just to reduce the strain on election day. It is difficult but the enthusiasm yesterday suggest they are overcoming the obstacles. Stay with us. Hello, good evening. The weather is looking fairly quiet, mostly settled over the next few days, not always entirely sunny. We did have some sunshine during today, a beautiful scene in the far north of scotland, but some showers around as well. Quite a big threatening clouds showed up in southsea on the south coast of england. The showers saw a bit of a weather system running around the southern edge of this area of High Pressure. The High Pressure will be the dominant feature over the next couple of days, but it is a long way of us, so it could still allow some showers and some certainly through this evening. We will see one or two showers across england and wales and most especially for eastern and southeastern counties of england, at the same time, a lot of clouds will roll in from the northeast of scotland and we could see some fog patches developing through the central belt. Temperatures will be lowest across one or 2 degrees and more widely, we are looking at for 7 degrees, so a fairly chilly start through tomorrow morning and for the time of year. A lot of dry weather around and cloudy across the north and the east of scotland. Southwest scotland should see some sunshine as well as Northern Ireland, while in the southwest, enjoying some sunshine too. Some sunny spots further east and a scattering of showers here across eastern england. Temperatures, nothing to write home about, ten to 14 degrees. As we head to thursday night, some showers feeding into the east, a lot of cloud across a good part of scotland and friday, yes, similar looking day with rather cloudy conditions for the most part. Now, if that cloud gets thick enough, they could squeeze out the odd spot of rain and there will be some breaks in the cloud. You might see your glimpse of sunshine. Temperatures by 11 to 13 degrees, the weekend continues with a largely dry but often cloudy theme. Temperatures will start to struggle wherever you are, and across the north of scotland through the second half of the weekend, it could turn very cool indeed with some extra cloud and maybe a little bit of rain. A bigger change in the next week, though, low pressure to the northwest, low pressure to the southwest. There is an uncertainty about which one of these is going to win out. They may both have a part to play, but however it turns out, it is looking like its going to turn much more unsettled with some heavy rain and strong winds from the start of next week. Youre watching bbc news with me Laura Trevelyan in washington, Christian Fraser is in london. Our top stories. Supreme Court NomineeAmy Coney Barrett refuses to answer specific questions on abortion, Voting Rights and the Affordable Care act. Donald trumps re Election Campaign its the economy stupid or rather, it was until covid hit. Well ask the president of a major union why hes backing biden. Also in the programme. While there really two names running to be president there actually more than 1,000 people with their name on the ballet well speak to the libertarian candidate. What better way to sell Family Favourite mac and cheese than by asking people to send in their noods . Thats noods. Not nudes. All fine then . Maybe not. What ever happened to that brexit story we used to report on. Well if you are still following it, and many of us still are, youll know that time is running out for the eu and the uk to agree a on a future trading relationship. And one of the big sticking points is fish, or more correctly who gets to fish in British Coastal waters. Last week, french fishermen from boulogne warned they would go bankrupt if they were unable to fish in british waters. France is the loudest voice insisting that european vessels must continue to enjoy unfettered access to uk waters after brexit. Werejoined now by Mujtaba Rahman the head of eurasia groups europe practice. I read your piece this morning in politico, and you were talking about an element we dont often discuss, and that really is the french and german approach to some of these unsolvable problems, how do you see it and why do you think france could be the country that puts a spoiler on all of this . I think the differences between paris and berlin are subtle but they are real, and i think they do exist. Germany has always been focused on the geopolitical consequences of brexit, the french have been a bit more defensive and a bit more driven by their domestic politics, and we see that now in regards to the area of fish where i think Emmanuel Macron has a key constituency putting a lot of pressure on the government not to sell them out as the price of landing a deal with the uk. You think about the announcements that have come from Emmanuel Macron and the government this evening and the government continue really struggling with the pandemic, Approval Ratings falling and all of these things that would ultimately give him a bit less room to manoeuvre on this key question. When you look at fish its. 4 of gdp but its totemic politically. Similarly so in france. You talk about the voters in brittany and normandie at a time when president macron is suffering in the polls because of coviand suffering in the polls because of covi and he thinks those are not voters he can afford to lose. Theres three issues and it comes to fish, its about the end state, the uk government is now saying to europe there will be a transition period, the experience of our french fishermen will not change much from the 31st of december to the 1st of january, but they say they dont ca re january, but they say they dont care but the glide the care but the end state. If the agreement means the excess they enjoy will be significantly less then thats going to hurt those industries and communities. Thats one big area. In the area at the level of predictability, will this be a negotiation between the two sides or every several years, i think that you wants a level of predictability on this question in the third issue is about the distribution implications . Its about one side winning on the other side losing. If the uk gets more french, the french from the belgians, the danes, the spaniards, the irish from the dutch necessarily get less the politics of that are quite difficult at the moment both within europe but also the uk. Is the us election a possible change of government affecting the uk negotiating position at all . I would not say massively. The government has made a move on the internal market bill so theyre looking to override parts of theyre looking to override parts of the Withdrawal Agreement that are believed to be a problem, there were address those legal defaults and think they are problematic. Joe biden has signalled very robustly in his administration would take issue with anything that would result in the return of anything like that. As a move closer to the end game on a deal the government will remove those offensive provisions within the internal market bill, the will do that because they want a deal but also because it would scuttle a trade agreement if joe also because it would scuttle a trade agreement ifjoe biden will to win in november which we think he will. Brexit looming large, no doubt we will speak again soon. Its the economy, stupid. That time honoured slogan around which bill clinton built a successful bid for the white house back in 1992. Thirty years on donald trump would dearly like the focus to be on who will handle the economy better. The trouble is covid has laid waste to the usjob market. And the reality is for this president is that many of the achievements in his first three years in office have been wiped out injust nine months. In 2016 donald trump campaigned on a promise of 4 growth but as this graph shows he hasnt quite acheived it. In fact, in those first three years the economy grew at the same pace as under president 0bama. And as for the Us Manufacturing industry which he promised to revitalise by 2019 his trade wars had helped push the sector into a slump. Michigan, ohio, indiana, wisconsin, minnesota and pennsylvania were all facing declines or plateaus in manufacturing employment well before covid 19 forced lay offs. As ofjuly, each of those states is down between 20,000 and 40,000 workers from prepandemic levels. Which could explain why our next guest and the organisation he works for is backing joe biden. Tom conway is the president of united steelworkers its the largest Manufacturing Union in the United States tom joins us from pittsburgh, pennsylvania. So, have the president s trade wars actually hurt us steel . Well, look, i think they were not well thought out. And thats sort of been the underlying problem, and your fracturing job losses was on a significant slide prior to the pandemic, and then since then it is just dropped off a cliff. But the approach to dealing with trade, and our union has long supported a change in the trade laws and the trade regime, how the wbo works, but needed to be more surgically done. Everybody knew the cheaters were. Ten or11 everybody knew the cheaters were. Ten or 11 countries who systematically abused the trade systems, and so that should have been carved out surgically, and the approach to them taken care of and instead the president sort of went after the whole world including allies and friends, and you were not going to deal with this capacity on your own. So i think in that regard we had ourselves isolated, we cannot deal with the continued flux of imports and find ourselves with you fracturing struggles in spite of tariffs. And those steel towns along the river, i have been to those, are they turning towardsjoe biden now do you think . |j those, are they turning towardsjoe biden now do you think . I think there is an understanding of whats going on. I think people have seen that in spite of the president s rhetoric and his claims, that in their town factories continue to close. And people continue to get hurt. While there is a propensity in people being mystified and entertained by his shenanigans i think theres others saying, well, in spite of what he saying thats not the case in my town. That there has been decades of trade policy, tax policy that is encourage manufacturers to move abroad. Isnt this the failure of successive administrations give of whichjoe biden has been a large part . The trade problems our union believes america faces as well as canada, and others are not new. You may have been going on for a long time, with the ascension of china through permanent normal trade relations, without controls for controls. That has been a problem. And this does not all rest at Donald Trumps feed, but he made a lot of promises about what he was going to do about it and has not kept them. So we believe thatjoe biden has not kept them. So we believe that joe biden finally gets it, has not kept them. So we believe thatjoe biden finally gets it, and is come forward with a plan about changing trade, not just is come forward with a plan about changing trade, notjust putting band aids on it. The tariffs are not a long term solution, and you need to be able to approach this with a different way. We talked a lot of groups to talk about seniors, suburban white women, hispanic voters, catholic voters, theyre all starting to lean towardsjoe biden but the one group that is not his blue collar noncollege educated workers. Those are, all of them, and a manufacturing sector. You as a union have gone forjoe biden but left the workers are going for trump. In my union i have that issue going on. Because of the Manufacturing Union, in that union over the years has suffered a lot of off shoring at a lot ofjobs. So thatis off shoring at a lot ofjobs. So that is a real dilemma. And you are talking to our members and were educating them and bringing them around too, you know, a solution that will work with a different administration. But i think trump has been very adept at identifying that segment of society that has suffered in serious ways and has a lot of angst and are everyone. And so his trumpet. Trump is constantly mad at everyone. And so it could be a good thing. Thank you so much for being with us. Its really interesting when you look at the joe its really interesting when you look at thejoe biden appeal and how hes pitching it. Hes very talking about his humble agreement to the neck upbringing in scranton and he is comparing that to the president. The president can only see the world from park avenue. I see it from scranton, i see it for real. You all know what im talking about. President trump lived on fifth avenue, i believe. Definitely stealing from the 2016 donald trump campaign. Certainly stealing from Boris Johnsons campaign because that slogan was in play well before joe biden used it. All fascinating stuff. President trumps pick for the us Supreme Courtjudge Amy Coney Barrett was grilled today by senators on capitol hill although she refused to reveal to them how shed vote on key issues like abortion and healthcare without the details of the case. If approved by the commitee, the senate could vote to confirm Coney Barrett by the end of the month. And confirm her they almost certainly will. She would be president trumps third appointment to the Supreme Court and give republican appointed justices a majority of 6 to 3 on the bench. But who is. She and what is she like to work for. John adams was a law clerk tojudge coney barret on the us court of appeals for the seventh circuit. He is in washington. How does she balance everything in her life . How will she balance being a justice . Her life . How will she balance being ajustice . Christian her life . How will she balance being a justice . Christian come if i knew her secret i would bottle it and sell it and ask to be on your programme and marketed. She is an amazing person. I had an opportunity to work with her up close. I served her first set of law clerks and what i witnessed day in and day out was really jurist who i witnessed day in and day out was reallyjurist who is also a caring mother, a mentor and loving spouse. A law professor, and a Community Volunteer and much more. And she approached everything that she did in life with the same type of poise and fortitude that the American People in the world have seen over the last few days and will continue to see today and learned throughout the weeks until her confirmation. Im very excited for the world to know the same person who i know, a caring and courageous woman. You think its possible thatjustice barrett could surprise us with some of her rulings . She keeps saying that she believes very much in judicial independence. Absolutely. It would be the same independent and impartialjurist that judge baer it would be the same independent and impartialjurist thatjudge baer is right now. And she certainly will surprise us, i have no idea how she will rule on particular cases that will rule on particular cases that will appear in the future but what i can tell you is that the judicial process that she has described to the Senate Judiciary committee yesterday and today and for what i saw she purchased every case of an open mind, and she weighs the arguments and will follow the rule of law wherever it requires. 0f course in american constitutional systems the courts will follow the statutes as they are written and would have the future congresses decide to such a deal at something she will consider based on the statute. The judge has told senator she will not be upon a president trump, can we take that went to the bank do you think . You can, she is someone with the utmost integrity and have the utmost confidence everything i have seen date day out when i work with their audits or law clerk think that i have seen in her scholarship and herjudicial opinions that she absolutely is independent and impartial and summer with the utmost integrity. Why do you think that, i would consider her a constitutionaljurist, you think that, i would consider her a constitutional jurist, am you think that, i would consider her a constitutionaljurist, am i right . To the extent that she is a jurist faithful to the constitution. Describe herjudicial philosophy as one ofan describe herjudicial philosophy as one of an original and that means in her words that she will look to the original public meaning at the time that the constitution or an amendment to the constitution was enacted and apply the rule of law based on the original public meaning because that is how the legitimacy of the law passed. The one thing i struggle to understand with this issueis struggle to understand with this issue is pressed today on the right to vote which of course is not a constitutional right. And yet she is a defender of the second amendment, so senator durbin was pressing her on this point that an ex felon would be denied the right to vote, but would be allowed to carry an ak 47, and that is upside down. With there isa and that is upside down. With there is a careful nuance here that i want to make clear in that she made clear to make clear in that she made clear to the senator. In the american constitution the second minute describes the right to the individual right to self defense and to own a firearm, not necessarily an ak47 but to own a firearm, not necessarily an ak 47 but a firearm. The 14th amendment talks about the right to vote and talks about the right to vote and talks about the right to vote as it applies to crimes committed. That specifically stated in the constitution. There is a nuance. What she had decided in an important opinion called cantor via bar is that violent criminals were violent felons bar is that violent criminals were viole nt felons cannot bar is that violent criminals were violent felons cannot have a firearm, but nonviolent felons at the different story. That is determined by president of the United StatesSupreme Court as well as the original public meaning of our constitution. Thank you so much for the insight. Really appreciate you being with us. The boyfriend of Breonna Taylor the black medical worker who was killed by Louisville Police in march has been speaking out about that night she was shot. Police had forced their way into ms taylors home believing her ex boyfriend had stored drugs there. None were found. Her boyfriend at the time of her death Kenneth Walker has been speaking to cbss gayle king about that incident take a listen. To the world she was just a hashtag ora to the world she was just a hashtag or a picture and all of that, but to me it was much more. More than a girlfriend but i think i want the world to know that the most. That was my best friend. The most important pretty much to me on the earth. And they took her. So the doors fly off the hinges. |j earth. And they took her. So the doors fly off the hinges. I let out one shot and figure if someone is trying to break in or something they are not going to want to do anything after that. After that what happens . I dont think ive ever heard so many gunshots on the same time. Never been to war but i assume what were sounds like one of us are fired six shots, officer mattingly, officer cosgrove fired 16, another fire ten, thats a lot of firepower. I still try to make sense of it to this day. Theres definitely nowhere to hide. Bullets coming every direction. When did you realise that breonna have been shot . |j direction. When did you realise that breonna have been shot . I guess in the middle of the gunfire, she screamed and i was holding her hand. You were holding her hand . Yes what was happening. He pulled her down to the ground, she was scared she did not get down. In the middle of this you will she has hit, was she alive at the time . She was still alive when the gunfire stopped. She was bleeding and stuff i was holding her, thats when i called my mum. You called your mum first . her, thats when i called my mum. You called your mum first . I told her that somebody kicked in the door and shot breonna and she tell me a call and i would one so i did. A reminder that not all of the Police Involved in that shooting have been charged in relation to her murder. Aside from the two names you will hear every night on this Programme Every night, donald trump and joe biden, there are in fact 1,218 other candidates running for the white house. Aside from the two names you will hear every night on this Programme Every night, donald trump and joe biden, there are in fact 1,218 other candidates running for the white house. Very few of them will feature on the ballot of all 50 states. But there are some notable canidates who do and who may well take an important number of votes next month. One of them is drjojorgensen shes the Libertarian Partys nominee. She says its time the United States took a page out of switzerlands book we should forget about being the worlds policman, scale back the size of government, and lastly, leave people to run their own lives. She is polling at 2 nationally and she joins us from greenville, south carolina. Thank you so much for being with us. Do you think youre going to take votes from disillusioned republicans or dissolution to democrats mostly . Traditionally retakes or dissolution to democrats mostly . Traditionally reta kes both or dissolution to democrats mostly . Traditionally retakes both from both parties, but we tended to take most of the votes from other independents or people who have never voted. And idid want or people who have never voted. And i did want to mention that im the only other candidate on the ballot in all 50 states, and the Libertarian Party is the only party other than the democrats and republicans who have been on the ballot in all 50 states and multiple back to back president ial elections. You are pulling at 3 in wisconsin which is the key Battle Ground. But what if you siphon off votes from one or other parties and then your very unpopular with those that wa nted very unpopular with those that wanted their candidate to win . would say that their candidate should have done what they shouldve done. Trump came in and said look im an outsider, im a businessman, i know how to balance a budget and cut spending, and by the way im going to bring the troops home. He did none of that. Joe biden, we have not had democrats act as democrats in decades. The Democratic Party was traditionally the party that was anti war, that was for individual rights, and they have not been looking out for the little guy. What i would say is that they should follow through on their promises and that they would not have to worry about me. The obvious question is why are you not on stage . If you are on the ballot in 50 states, why dont we hearfrom on the ballot in 50 states, why dont we hear from you . Thats an excellent question, one i would like to have an answer from them on. The obvious answer is that ones with the power and people who have power like to keep it, and they know that if im on stage and will be the only true alternative because both of them want to make choices for american voters, both of them want to spend americans monies come up another one of them was going to bring troops home another one has the answer to the health care cause. I would be the only one with a true alternative and im sure they dont wa nt alternative and im sure they dont want the American People to see that they do have somebody else they can vote for. They both say if the most consequential election in a generation, does that make it more difficult for you because youre getting squeezed, theres not much room in the middle right now, is there . Im not so sure it is so consequential. Weve got to Big Government people running for office. Trump who said he would cut the deficit and the debt and get increase the deficit at a faster rate than obama did, and that we have joe biden the democratic candidate not sticking up for the little guy, so what we have are too Big Government people i dont offer much alternative to each other. Not much alternative to each other. Not much choice. Based on what youre seeing think will be a record turnout in the selection . Im not a strategist, i hope so. I hope youre getting a lot of people out. I would like to mention that about 75 of our volunteers are from outside the party and has been that way pretty much since the first week because we keep hearing, you know, i dont want another old rich white man but thats the least of the problems. The bigger problems they are making our choices for us its putting our money not allowing us to be americans that make our own decisions. Thank you so much for joining us they are from the Libertarian Party. Its tough getting the tone right in advertising. You need to make ads that are eye catching and funny but not too risque. You dont want to go offending the very people whore meant to be buying your product. Yes so out of the how not to do it book of marketing, comes a sparkling example from kraft. The company beloved by americans for their homely mac and cheese noodles. 0r noodz. See where i am going. Worrying about it already . Yes me too. In in these strange times, people are in need of extra comfort. Thats why its always a nice gesture to send micro to slate know you are thinking of them. Noods, i mean, not nudes. The clear im not advocating you send noods to anyone, im talking about noods, not nudes. To be clear it was laura that suggested this story in our morning meeting im going to sit back and let her explain her attitude towards noods. No sex think with your mac cheese, christian. Theres been a backlash to that add in the United States. Mac cheese is wholesome. Hello. The weather is looking fairly quiet and fairly settled over the next few days. It wont always be desperately sunny, there will be a fair amount of cloud around, but for many spots it will be dry. This is the satellite picture. You can see weather systems out to the west. An area of low pressure spinning across continental europe, thats giving quite a lot of cloud and some outbreaks of rain. But in between what weve got a gap of mainly fine weather. This area of High Pressure which will be dominating the scene for the next few days. But with that north easterly breeze continuing to feed some rather cool air in ourdirection. So through thursday, a lot of dry weather, some spells of sunshine but with that northeasterly breeze we are going to bring a lot of cloud in across scotland, particularly up towards the north and east. And once again some showers pushing in from the north sea effecting some parts of england. But for the west, wales, southwest of england, Northern Ireland, here we should see the sunshine. Not quite as breezy as it has been, but still on the cool side with temperatures up to 10 degrees there in aberdeen, 14 in plymouth. Now as we move through thursday night its more of the same. More of this cloud rolling its way in across scotland, some more showers pushing in from the east coast across some areas of england. While we get some clear spells it will turn into another relatively chilly night. Nothing desperately chilly for this time of year. Our High Pressure is still in charge for friday sitting up here to the north. The isobars, the white lines more widely spaced by this stage, so that shows that the winds will be lighter. There is going to be quite a lot of cloud in the mix but that cloud potentially producing the odd spot of rain, may be the odd shower. Many spots will be dry, best of the sunshine again probably in the west with highs of 11 to 13 degrees. Similar sort of day on saturday, i think we will always see quite a lot of cloud rolling in from the northeast, best of any sunshine further south and west and temperatures between ten and 14 degrees. Now a subtle change as we head into sunday in the form of this, a little cold front here. Does not look like much on the chart but it could just introduce a bit more in the way of cloud, and maybe the odd spot of rain into parts of northern and northeastern scotland. Behind that frontal system the air, if anything, will turn a little bit colder temporarily. So in aberdeen we may only be up to around 8 degrees on sunday afternoon. Further south again, 12 or 13. Now as we head into monday, this is when things start to change. An area of High Pressure looks like retreating. Low pressure to the southwest, low pressure to the northwest, but one or both of these weather systems will approach our shores through the early part of next week. A bit of uncertainty about the detail at this range, but theres the increasing chance of wet and rather blustery weather pushing across parts of the uk. Temperatures still on the low side for the most part, and then as we had to through next week, as i mentioned, to areas of low pressure. One to the southwest, one to the northwest. Computer models not quite certain which one of these is going to win out but it looks like one of them will. Thats going to turn things much more unsettled with wind and rain at times. Depending on where low pressure comes to rest it may be that for a time we draw some milder air in ourdirection, but it looks most likely as we head through the second half of next week, an area of low pressure will push away eastwards and that will open the door once again to some rather cool air. So to sum things up for next week, it is likely to turn milder, but perhaps only for a time. And there will be some spells of wind and rain. Thats all from me, bye for now. Tonight at ten, the latest steps to control the pandemic expose growing differences across the uk. In Northern Ireland schools will close from friday, and pubs and restaurants face new restrictions, the toughest in the uk. We fully appreciate that this will be difficult and worrying news for a lot of people. The executive has taken this decision because it is necessary and we discussed the impacts in great detail. In wales, therell be a ban on people visiting from other parts of the uk, with the highest rates of infection. And in england, as the new three tier system comes into force, the Prime Ministerfaces more calls for a short limited lockdown. We report from liverpool, at the heart of a region
