Members of the greek coastguard have been seen shooting near migrants in the sea to stop them reaching greece from turkey. In east yorkshire, many homes are still under water after the river aire overflowed its banks following unprecedented rainfall in recent weeks. And we talk to dame Hilary Mantel as she publishes the much anticipated third part of her trilogy about the life of Thomas Cromwell. And coming up on sportsday on bbc news, its fa cup fifth round week as portsmouth face arsenal, with a place in the quarterfinals up for grabs. Good evening. The Prime Minister has warned there could be a very significant expansion in cases of coronavirus and has pledged to give the nhs all it needs to handle the outbreak. Another three cases were confirmed in the uk today. All of those affected had recently travelled to italy. The patients, from hertfordshire, devon and kent, bring the total number of people across the uk who are known to have contracted the virus to 39. Across the world, nearly 90,000 people have been infected. The majority of the cases are in china, and 3,000 have died in 62 countries. In a moment, well look at the nhs response and how businesses and workers are affected but first, our Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg reports. The gates are locked at a school in south west london. A pub in surrey closed its doors when a customer took ill. A Business Park in kent where one worker has been diagnosed and is now at home in isolation. Coronavirus is here, and the government expects it to spread. The most important thing now is that we prepare against a possible very significant expansion of coronavirus in the uk population and that is clearly on the cards. Can you give us a sense of the kind of numbers we might be looking at . It is difficult to speculate about exactly how it may or may not progress, but what i think you can say with a fair degree of certainty is that it is, in my view, much more likely than not that we will face a challenge in the weeks, months ahead. But if you look at how this has been spreading, particularly outside china. Yes, i think that is absolutely right. We are looking at thousands of cases . You have got to consider the realistic, the realistic possibility that there is now going to be a significant expansion. Are we looking already at closing lots of schools, cancelling big events . You know, the public have seen other parts of the world basically in lockdown because of what has been going on. Understood. Is that what people should expect . What we have got is a range of calibrated responses the measures you have mentioned are on that list. The issue will be when and how and with what logic to deploy them. There is already some anecdotal evidence that it is taking people a long time to get through to 111 on the nhs. There is some evidence that people are not being able to get tested as quickly as they would like to. Will you commit today to give the nhs exactly what it asks for, even if that runs into significant extra amounts of money . Of course we will do everything we can to address the problem and to stop the spread of the disease. The governments Emergency Committee met today to sign off bigger plans they will reveal tomorrow. Wash your hands to the national anthem. But labour wants to know what happens if millions of people have to stay off work. The government is going to have to come up with a very big package that makes sure that where we do require people to be isolated from the rest of the community, they do get the support that is necessary because there is no evidence yet that the government has even started thinking about that. With more than three dozen cases now, in northern ireland, scotland, england and wales, people are making their own preparations. For the vast majority of people, they will make a full recovery and it is a relatively mild illness. Children and otherwise healthy adults seem to be at much lower risk. Dozens of brits who had been in tenerife, stuck in quarantine, finally took off and arrived home. Weve finally landed in the uk. Hooray i get to spend my birthday in the uk. Just need to make it back to huddersfield before the big night. With other airlines cancelling hundreds of flights, what started as a problem far away is now very much close to home. Laura kuenssberg, bbc news. The head of the world health 0rganisation said today that the outbreak of coronavirus had entered uncharted territory, but the problem could still be contained. The uk government will publish details of its action plan tomorrow to try to tackle the spread of the infection. 0ur Health Editor hugh pym has been taking a look at the nhs response to coronavirus. Nhs iii, a place to call for those with symptoms recently back from the worst affected countries with the virus. Advice is given on whether a test is needed. Call volumes were up more than 50 at times last week and there were some reports by users of delays, but the number of calls has since fallen back to more normal levels. There have been some delays, but our staff are working flat out round the clock right across the country, doing a fantasticjob. A new online nhs 111 service for those wanting guidance on possible exposure to coronavirus was launched last week. Health chiefs are urging people to go online if possible, rather than calling 111. Tilt your head back for me. More than 13,000 coronavirus tests have now been carried out, some at this drive through centre in west london. A few people who have self isolated, waiting for a test, have reported delays. Dave and his wife called 111 last wednesday, were tested on friday and are still waiting for the results. It is incredibly frustrating, and i know a lot of people are being tested at the moment. I know the nhs is stretched, but it is unbelievably frustrating, believe me. The nhs advice to anyone regardless of symptoms is, wash your hands frequently to reduce the infection risk. So if there is a big jump in the number of cases, how will an already overstretched nhs cope . How will hospitals and their staff manage to handle the extra patients on top of their already heavy workload . The nhs may well free up beds by stopping non urgent surgery, but some are worried about workforce numbers. We need to bring extra staff on board, bearing in mind mind that some staff themselves may be unwell. We also need to think about how we undertake prioritisations. The British Medical Association said that a major outbreak would dramatically intensify pressures already facing the health service. Hugh pym, bbc news. Our Global Health correspondent Tulip Mazumdar is at an nhs 111 call centre in the West Midlands. Tulip, just a quick update on what they are up to at the call centre, they are up to at the call centre, the volume of calls and what they are telling you . Yes, huw, the night shift has just started here. Some of the night shift Staff Members have just come in and are getting settled down. Staff members, doctors, nurses and call handlers, are working 24 7 to advise people who think they may have been exposed to this coronavirus. With the volume of calls they are seeing, normally they see around 3000 calls a day for a wide variety of health issues. They are now looking at about 4000 cases every weekday, so quite a jump. That is why bosses here are looking at recruiting 150 more call handlers for this call centre in the coming days and weeks as the uk braces itself for more cases. There hasnt yet been a case identified in the West Midlands here since this outbreak started. Tulip, thanks for the update. Tulip mazumdar at that one call centre in dudley in the West Midlands. The Economic Cost of the spread of coronavirus is also being felt. Global growth forecasts have been cut, and the Financial Markets have fallen further. And there could be major implications for uk businesses and their employees, as our Business Editor simonjack explains. How is working at home . Businesses are having to face up to the challenges of working around coronavirus. Do you really need to come in . At this software company, there are some new office rules. Were doing a number of things in the office. We are asking our staff to take their laptops home at the end of every day in case they are unable to come to work the next morning. We are operating very strict policy on sickness if you dont feel good, please dont come in. We are asking all of our team to set up meetings via video conferencing, which obviously reduces mobility, and general cleanliness in the office, including hand wipes and hand sanitiser. Many employers are prepared to pay workers in full for short periods of illness, but they dont have to. So what are your rights . Employees are entitled by law to sick pay of £94. 25 a week, but it only kicks in after three days illness. It is paid for up to 28 weeks, plenty to cover a 14 day isolation period, but if you stay home and dont get sick, employers are not obliged to pay you for taking that precaution. Policies will no doubt vary from employer to employer. Most will hopefully take a sensible approach. For office workers, it is arguably easier you can work from home, be more flexible, but for some people, that is just not an option. If you dont show up, you dont get paid. Taxi driver mohammed says he is taking as many precautions as he can. But not working is not one of them. I do sort of try not to pick up from airports, because people travel anywhere and you dont know how their hygiene is going to be and all that. If you getjobs, you just do it, really, and i cant see myself not working, i need to work. I need to pay bills. Unless my wheels are turning, im not earning. The public sector, including the nhs, employs private firms to perform critical functions. Unions are worried low paid workers will be financially forced into work. Our members are the lowest paid in the nhs its your cleaners, your caterers, your security guards and porters. They cant do theirjob from home and they are being put in an impossible situation where they have to choose between paying the rent and coming into work ill. We need leadership from the government and we need them to say everybody working in the nhs will be paid full sick pay from day one. For now, for most, it is business as usual, but the impact of the virus is beginning to change how we live and work. Simon jack, bbc news. Lets look at some of the other major developments today. The authorities in italy say 52 people have now died after being infected by the virus. The number of overall cases there has now passed 2,000. Meanwhile, British Airways and ryanair have cancelled hundreds of flights because of the coronavirus outbreak. Both airlines said there had been a significant fall in demand. Today, the organisation for Economic Cooperation and development warned that this year, Global Growth could fall to its slowest rate since 2009. 0ur economics editor faisal islam is here. What do you make of this . Last week we saw a big impact on the stock market. But we are getting today is Global Economic institutions and finance ministries and Central Banks worrying about a very real economic impact. You mention to the 0ecd. In a worst case scenario, they are suggesting that Global Growth could have. If we get to the nub of the issue, china, we are getting, in real statistics of manufacturing activity, you can see it falling off activity, you can see it falling off a cliff at the end like an economic heart attack. That is a measure of Economic Activity in china. You can see it is at the lowest level ever, below where it was in the financial crisis in 2008. It is because of that, the transmission of this into the real economy, but i understand that g7 finance ministers will be having a Conference Call at lunchtime tomorrow. And they will acknowledge the potential impact on the World Economy beyond china, and said that they stand ready to work together. The sort of impact we are talking about will dwarf what we should have been talking about today, which is the eu opening negotiations post brexit, and also laying out its negotiation mandate with the us. We are talking 0. I growth over the long term. This is bigger in terms of the short term and also raises questions about where the attention of Global Economic leaders will be, which will certainly be on coronavirus. Faisal islam, our economics editor. And you can find out more about the symptoms of coronavirus and how to protect yourself against it on our website, bbc. Co. Uk news, and on the bbc news app. The links are there and there is plenty of information as well. The bbc has seen details of another complaint of bullying against the home secretary, priti patel. It follows the resignation at the weekend of the chief Civil Servant at the home office, who also accused her, among other things, of bullying. The documents show that a settlement of £25,000 was paid to a former staff member four years ago after ms patel was accused during her time as employment minister. Her spokesperson denied she knew anything about the complaint, as our correspondent Rianna Croxford reports. Are you a workplace bully, home secretary . She is one of the governments most senior ministers. Now more allegations have emerged about priti patels treatment of staff. On saturday, the most senior Civil Servant in the home office resigned and announced he was suing the government for constructive dismissal. He said he was aware of a number of complaints against the home secretary. I have received allegations that her conduct has included shouting and swearing, belittling people, making unreasonable and repeated demands behaviour that created fear and needed some bravery to call out. This afternoon, the minister for the Cabinet Office, michael gove, announced an investigation into claims she had broken the ministerial code. Mr speaker, this government always takes any complaints relating to the ministerial code seriously and in line with the process set out in the ministerial code, the Prime Minister has asked the Cabinet Office establish the facts. But we can now reveal details of a further claim, this time from priti patels period as employment minister in the department for work and pensions. 0ur documents allege that a junior staff member had already felt bullied in the department and taken an overdose. A year later, when ms patel was a minister, the staff member had told her line manager about a medical problem she was struggling with. Her grievance letter claims the next day priti patel shouted at her to get lost and get out of herface. She was then dismissed. Shortly after, the staff member took an overdose of Prescription Medication in the office. The letter said she was taken home where she took another overdose in what is described as an attempt to kill herself, and was rushed to hospital. The documents also reveal that the junior staff member later received a settlement of £25,000 after bringing a claim of bullying and discrimination against the department. Ms patel is named in the document. On sunday, the Prime Minister defended ms patel, calling her a brilliant home secretary and praised the civil service. She has always strenuously denied all of the allegations. Rianna croxford, bbc news. Members of the greek coastguard have been seen shooting near migrants in the sea and using patrol boats to push away vessels full of people trying to reach greece from turkey. Thousands of migrants and refugees have gathered at turkeys border with greece after turkey announced it would no longer prevent them from leaving for the european union. Turkey is trying to increase pressure on the west to provide more help with the syrian conflict. 0ur correspondent jonah fisher sent this report from 0restiada, near greeces border with turkey. In the eastern aegean, human lives are bargaining chips, and cheap. This was filmed by the Turkish Coast guard and shows greek boats trying to stop a packed dinghy of migrants reaching europe. Imagine the fear on board, unwanted by turkey and greece. Those are warning shots being fired at a flimsy inflatable dinghy. Not everyone makes it. Just this morning, a young boy drowned when his dinghy a different one capsized. He is one of a rising number who have, with turkeys encouragement, tried to reach the greek islands over the last few days. The direct human consequences of ankaras demand that europe come to its aid in syria. 0n land, things are no better. There have been riots at greeces border with turkey after thousands of migrants were mobilised to march right up to the fence. And some have got through. Greece has changed the rules so that if migrants get caught now, they dont get processed here, they get sent straight back. It means that some of them are hiding so we have just seen what looks like a couple of migrants over here. They run off and we eventually find them hiding in some bushes. Police . Im not the police, 0k . They are syrians, from aleppo, hassan and ahmed. Tear gas . Gas, gas. Tired and still shell shocked from crossing the border. They ask us for help and for a ride in our car. You cant come with me. It is illegal under greek law. I think someones coming. Moments later, we are disturbed. And they move off once again. 0n the run in a country that is increasingly hostile to their presence. Jonah fisher, bbc news, in northern greece. In israel, exit polls suggest that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a narrow lead over his rival, benny gantz, after voting ended in the countrys general election. Its the third election in under a year, after previous rounds ended with neither of the two main Party Leaders able to form a government. Mr netanyahu, who leads the right wing likud party, is seeking a record fifth term in office. He is due in court later this month on corruption charges, which he has strongly denied. Dozens of homes in east yorkshire are still under water after the river aire overflowed its banks following unprecedented rainfall in recent weeks. The water remains several feet deep in places and its expected to be a few more days before people will be allowed back into the worst affected homes. 0ur correspondent danny savage sent this report. The rain which caused all this flooding is now a distant memory, but the problems it created go on and on. In the village of east cowick, 69 homes have been flooded. You need waders to reach many of them. Weve been watching every day and thinking, another foot, another foot, another foot, and thinking we were going to get away with it. And then when it actually goes in, you relax then, its done, its finished. Youve nowt to fight. This is sodden, isnt it . Yeah. And when you lose the battle, this is what is left. Peoples homes, their sanctuaries, destroyed. When my mum came yesterday, she saw the house and just floods of tears. It was horrible. Yeah, its. Dont know where to start with it. Across the road, it was much worse. Mick let us into his bungalow, where the water had forced his floor up. Its come up in a big hump. It isntjust the carpet, its the floorboards. The whole floor. So, youve got like an island in your living room now. Sandbags are ok for a little bit, but not to this extent, are they . We sort of keep it nice and, there you go, its all done for, isnt it . As you can imagine, the water here isnt very clean, but whats making it worse is that kerosene has got into it they use it here as heating oil and its given the water a film, it stinks and its getting into all these peoples houses. Pumps are moving water off the flood plain and into a nearby canal, butjust look at how much there is. It could be days before people can get back to their homes. Danny savage, bbc news, east cowick. The bbc has uncovered evidence that police in the indian capital delhi acted alongside hindu rioters during a wave of attacks on muslims last week. The death toll in the religious violence has now risen to 46 the deadliest in more than three decades. Indias hindu nationalist government is coming under increasing pressure, as allegations of Police Complicity in the clashes continue to emerge. The bbcs Yogita Limaye has sent this report and you may find some of the images distressing. They are meant to protect all of indias people but here the police are seen with hindus, throwing stones towards muslims. Videos like these have been emerging since the violence last week. We went to the street where the footage was filmed a predominantly hindu one. This man described how the police helped them. We didnt have enough stones here so the Police Brought us some and told us to throw them. Across the road, we find the burnt out house of a muslim man. I saw the police come in with the rioters, who set the shops on fire in front of them, he told me. We have been able to investigate how events unfolded at this one location, but on several instances now we have been told by people that the police were either complicit with or turned a blind eye to hindu mobs and used Excessive Force against muslims. This muslim man was beaten to death by the police. He was 23. In another video, he is seen lying unconscious with four other men. Some of them are asked to sing Indias National anthem to prove their patriotism. We are indians like you are, the men plead. At the mans home, preparations for his funeral were being made when we went. He couldnt stand up or sit down. My brother was in so much pain. His whole body had turned black and blue. He was beaten in such places that i cant even express it, his brother told me. Rafik was one of those beaten with him. There is barely any part of his body that has not been wounded. Im too scared to go and get myself treated. The situation outside is so bad. The government has ruined india, he says. The delhi police did not respond to the allegations. The violence has torn apart a neighbourhood in delhi but its ripples have been felt around the country. Among muslims, there is a deep sense of insecurity in an india under hindu nationalist rule. Yogita limaye, bbc news, delhi. Its been an eight year wait, but the much anticipated third part of dame Hilary Mantels trilogy about the life of Thomas Cromwell, called the mirror and the light, is finally being published. The previous two books in the series, set in the court of henry viii, have sold more than 5 million copies. Hilary mantel has been speaking to our arts correspondent rebecca jones. 480 years ago, Thomas Cromwell was here at the tower of london, awaiting execution. What better place, then, to discuss the final novel in Hilary Mantels turbulent tudor history . But at 900 pages, and with a vast cast of characters, she acknowledges its a challenging read. I cant deny its demanding, but i make no apologies for asking a lot of commitment from my reader. The mirror and the light completes the story of henry viiis chief adviser, Thomas Cromwell, begun in wolf hall and bring up the bodies. Our case is slender. Both were prize winning novels, adapted successfully for stage and screen. Do not be a viper in my bosom. And Hilary Mantel says our relentless scrutiny of the monarchy especially royal wives spans the ages. I think theres still an intense concentration on the bodies of royal women. We only have to look at what happens when our royal ladies give birth. They are perceived as public property, in the same way that tudor women were perceived. It is simply turning the individual woman back into a breeder. I did wonder what you made of the treatment of the duchess of sussex. Do you think shes been a victim of racism . It brings me back to this question of the body. It does include the skin, so racism is a factor. I think its more deeply embedded in peoples consciousness than any of us are willing to admit. Couldnt it have been managed with less bloodshed . Hilary mantels already adapting her new book for the stage, and she says shed now rather work in the theatre than at home, writing novels. Ive spent enough time sitting in a room by myself and, you know, im not sure i want to die at my desk. So, youve got to be, erm, sane about this. Dame Hilary Mantel ending that report by rebecca jones. Thats it. Now on bbc one, time for the news where you are. Have a very good night. Hello and welcome to sportsday. Im katie shanahan.
