Forecasters warn of an unsurvivable storm surge, as hurricane laura makes landfall in the us state of louisiana. I saw the tag which had the name. The boy who found an australian airmans world war ii dog tag is thanked by his family. And coming up on bbc news the premier leagues record appearance holder retires from professional football. Former england and Manchester City midfielder gareth barry ends his career at the age of 39. Good afternoon. Welcome to the one oclock news. The white supremacist gunman who killed 51 people at two mosques in new zealand has beenjailed for life with no chance of parole. 29 year old Brenton Tarrant whos from australia has been told hell die behind bars the first time such a sentence has been handed down in new zealand. He had pleaded guilty to charges of murder, attempted murder and terrorism after the mass shooting last year. The judge described what he did as inhuman and said tarrant was devoid of empathy for his victims. Shaimaa khalil reports. Celebrating justice. Its the sentence they demanded, and the one they got. The terrorist who devastated their lives will spend the rest of his life in jail. He tried to look as strong as he can, he tried to look like he doesnt care. And im very sure that he was so much screaming and crying inside him. Yeah. We said always in our language, alhamdulillah, thanks to god for everything. Alhamdulillah. Brenton tarrant hoped his attack on two christchurch mosques would bring fear and division to new Zealands Muslim community. Instead, it brought people together. But the judge condemned the wicked violation of a place of worship and a killer who showed no mercy. It was brutal, and beyond callous. Your actions were inhuman. You deliberately killed a three year old infant by shooting him in the head as he clung to the leg of his father. The terror you inflicted in the last few minutes of that small childs life is but one instance of the pitiless cruelty that you exhibited throughout. The judge spent almost an hour paying tribute to each of the People Killed and injured. This he spoke about their lives, their achievements and the agony their families have gone through. One man, he said, died in the embrace of his wife and the embrace of his faith. New zealands prime minister, jacinda ardern, lead the countrys response to the attack and shared in its grief. The trauma of 15th march is not easily healed. But today, i hope, is the last where we have any cause to hear or utter the name of the terrorist behind it. His deserves to be a lifetime of complete and utter silence. Ayas brother, hussein al umari, was murdered in al noor mosque. Today, she feels the family can move forward at last. It felt like a ton of weight was lifted off our shoulders. This whole week has been an emotional rollercoaster, and to conclude that on a high note was fantastic. Aya, i know that you speak to your brother when you visit his grave what will you tell him today . Hussein is with me all the time, not only when i visit him in the grave. And i have this necklace that i wear of our favourite picture of me and him, and what i would tell him is, justice is served today, hussein, justice is served. This massacre will remain a painful and harrowing mark in new zealands history, a day when 51 people were killed as they gathered in prayer and peace. Shaimaa khalil, bbc news, sydney. Hundreds of Additional Police and National Guard officers have been deployed in the us state of wisconsin after three nights of unrest sparked by the Police Shooting of a black man in the city of kenosha. 17 year old Kyle Rittenhouse has been arrested on suspicion of shooting dead two people during the protests, and the Police Officer who shot jacob blake has also been named. David willis reports. Crowd shout hands up, dont shout into a vacuum created by daily protests and an initially overstretched police force has come armed vigilantes, one of whom was caught on camera before tuesday nights violence. Reports suggest the individual interviewed, 17 year old Kyle Rittenhouse, later put his weapon to use. This mobile phone footage appears to capture the moment someone fires on protesters, and later zooms in on an individual lying motionless on the ground. Another video appears to show a similar incident. Again, a protester is gunned down. Two people were killed. A third, seen here, was injured. Someone who appeared to be armed was later seen walking with his hands up towards the police. A 17 year old has since been charged with first degree murder. All this, in response to sundays shooting of a black man, jacob blake, by a white Police Officer. Officials say the officer, rusten sheskey, fired seven times into mr blakes back after being called upon to investigate a domestic dispute. During the investigation following the initial incident, mr blake admitted that he had a knife in his possession, and dci agents, thats the division of criminal investigation, recovered a knife from the drivers side floorboard of mr blakes vehicle. A search of the vehicle located no additional weapons. President trump, in a series of tweets, vowed to clamp down on the violence in kenosha. Whilst in a video message, his democratic rival joe biden appealed for calm. Protesting brutality is a right and absolutely necessary, but burning down communities is not protest, its needless violence. In a statement, the local Basketball Team, the Milwaukee Bucks, announced a surprise boycott of their play off game in response to the shooting of jacob blake. Its possible the entire season could now be injeopardy. Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action. So, our focus today cannot be on basketball. When we take the court and represent milwaukee and wisconsin, we are expected to play at a high level, with maximum effort to hold each other accountable. We hold ourselves to that standard, and, in this moment, we are demanding the same from lawmakers and Law Enforcement. Meanwhile, hundreds of National Guard officers have now been sent to kenosha, as the latest protests over Police Across the country. David willis, bbc news, los angeles. As we heard in that report, sportsmen and women across the United States have withdrawn from a series of sporting events after the Basketball Team the Milwaukee Bucks who are from wisconsin decided to boycott their game against the orlando magic. It drew support from former president barack obama, who tweeted that he commended the players for standing up for what they believe in. We can speak now to our Sports Correspondent nesta mcgregor. Unprecedented protest in the United States from athletes. Yeah, Extraordinary Events overnight. First of all the milwaukee box refusing to leave their locker room with a clear message some things are more important than basketball and this being one of them, the fight for racial equality. After that we had major league baseball, Major League Soccer and in turn is the world number four also refusing League Soccer and in turn is the world numberfour also refusing to play in her wta match. Today could bea play in her wta match. Today could be a hugely significant day. At about 4pm uk time that is to be a meeting. League officials and players will meet separately to decide what to do next. Reports coming from inside the nba bubble suggest that two teams want to withdraw altogether which would have huge reputational and financial implications for the nba. This is important because people in america, athletes, have been protesting for decades. Remember in 2016. Many feel that having black lives matter on the court or having slogans on shirts wasnt enough so this financial hit could be huge. The owners of these nba teams have huge influence in sport and also in political circles as well so conversations could be hiding places we havent had before. To paraphrase jr smith who plays for the la lakers he says america, we cannot continue to entertain a country that continues to kill us. Thank you. One of the most powerful and potentially catastrophic storms to hit the United States has made landfall on the coast of louisiana. Hurricane laura has brought winds of up to 150mph and officials are warning of an unsurvivable storm surge. Half a Million People in texas and louisiana have been ordered to leave the area. John mcmanus reports. Touched down on the louisiana coast for the strongest storm to hit this part of the us in more than 150 years. Its not just historic. At category four, hurricane laura has the potential to be deadly. This has been categorised repeatedly as an unsurvivable storm surge, where it will be hitting. Bringing winds of 150mph, laura is pushing the sea waters from the gulf of mexico inland. A storm surge that could reach 20ft in height and travel as far as a0 miles from the coast. The often marshy terrain of the gulf coast is particularly vulnerable, and the evacuation of half a Million People is already well underway. Many have headed for shelters further inland. But not everybody is leaving. Basically stand back, riding it out, ive already got the house stockpiled with what i might need, just got to make sure you fill the sinks in and the bathtub, run the toilets, if we lose water and power. Others have weighed up the risks and decided its time to move. Its going to be real bad. So, we are leaving. We dont want to go, i dont want to go, but my children want to go. That may be the wisest option. Water levels are rising, helped by torrential rain, and there are already reports of damage to buildings. The authorities have warned that supplies of freshwater and electricity may be disrupted and might possibly take weeks to restore. The last hurricane of comparable intensity in this area was back in the 1950s, and, even back then, we had great loss of life, even with a smaller population at that point. The storms progress through the caribbean has already left at least 2a people dead, haiti amongst the worst hit. Now that its made landfall, laura will begin to weaken, but the damage it is causing will be widespread and lasting, and it is now forecast to move on to americas east coast. John mcmanus, bbc news. Cbs News ReporterCourtney Zubowski is in texas and sent us this update. Here in galveston, texas, which is about 150 miles from where we saw the direct hit, conditions are very good. We saw a little rain, a little wind. Our main concern right now is our neighbours to the east, where daybreak here is in about an hour, and thats when we will see the extent of the damage, the potential loss of life and the damage to buildings, businesses and homes. You talked about that storm surge, of up to two storeys. Well, in addition to rising water, that water comes with such force that it can knock homes and businesses off foundations. So, we have to wait until the sun comes up so that Emergency Responders can go out and assess the damage. So, right now, thats what were waiting for, to assess loss of life and loss of property. The number of people getting vaccinated against flu has fallen according to new bbc analysis. Thats despite the eligibility for free vaccination being widened ahead of an expected increase in coronavirus cases this winter. Scientists have called for greater awareness of the severity of flu, as our medical correspondent Richard Galpin reports. Under strain for months due to the pandemic, the nhs faces another daunting challenge this autumn. The prospect potentially of a second wave of coronavirus combined with the flu outbreak, infecting the population and threatening to overwhelm hospitals. The key now is for as many people as possible to be given the flu vaccine. While the u pta ke of given the flu vaccine. While the uptake of the vaccine is good amongst older people, for whom it is free, doctors concerned about younger people, particularly those with serious underlying conditions. That is not just with serious underlying conditions. That is notjust for their benefit, it is for the benefit of their relatives, so as for example we had somebody in their 40s who would be on one of these groups because they have diabetes it is notjust to protect them but it might protect other people for example elderly relatives who they might be visiting so relatives who they might be visiting so it is important for the whole population to get behind the sun thatis population to get behind the sun that is probably the main message. Figures show the proportion of people having the vaccine has decreased, due in part, it seems, to complacency. In scotland there was a fall of 15 between 2015 and 2020. Take up dropped 13 in Northern Ireland in the same period and in wales it fell 7 . In england the proportion of Vulnerable People getting vaccinated fell 6 . With fears thousands more people could die in the autumn and winter due to flu and coronavirus, the government is planning the biggest everflu immunisation programme, up to 30 Million People in england being offered the vaccine. There is a huge programme within the nhs to roll it out. We have expanded it because we do not want a flu outbreak at the same time as dealing with coronavirus and in fact we may. Of all things go very well we may have to roll the two out concurrently. In another initiative today the government has announced workers on low incomes and areas of england where there are high rates of coronavirus will be able to claim 13 times a day if they have to self isolate. The benefit is due to be trialled in north west england from next week. It has been criticised by some for not going anywhere near far enough. Our top story this lunchtime. The white supremacist who killed 51 muslim worshippers in new zealand is jailed for the rest of his life and told he willl die behind bars. And coming up support for theatre staff unable to work due to the pandemic. Coming up on bbc news who will replace jason roy at the top of the lineup for england . He has been ruled out of the t20 series against pakistan with a side strain. The us Vice President , mike pence, has told the Republican National convention that violence and chaos is engulfing cities across the country. He warned that novembers president ial election was a choice between law and order or lawlessness. As he spoke of his admiration for President Trump he also described all Police Officers as heroes. Resident tom and i know that the men and women who put on the uniform of Law Enforcement are the best of us. President trump and i. Every day when they walk out of their door, they consider our lives more important than their own. We can speak now to our washington correspondent Gary Odonoghue. The Vice President laying out the choice, as he sees it, for voters in the election . Yes, and pretty apocalyptic language from the Vice President during his speech last night, talking about america no longer be in america after the 3rd of november if the democrats are elected, and telling people they wouldnt anyway be safe after the 3rd of november if the democrats get elected. A kind of sophisticated political message which really means anything to those who are hearing it, so you can make of it what you will. Also, some keen defence of the president s record, his economic record, his record on abortion and pro life issues, as well as his record on the military and military spending. Little or nothing on what a future trump p administration would do over the next four years if it was given power. Again, very, very little detail, which tells you, ben, this election is all about, on the trump side, pointing out, you dont want that lot in charge. Gary, thank you very much indeed, Gary Odonoghue there, our washington correspondent. Net migration to the uk has risen to its highest level for four years, driven in part by higher numbers of non eu students coming here to study. Our home editor, mark easton, is with me now. Mark, what do you read into these figures . Its really interesting, there are really two sets of figures that we have got today and they tell com pletely that we have got today and they tell completely different stories. The first is the official migration figures, which reflect activity up until march this year, the previous year, until march this year, the previous yea r, two until march this year, the previous year, two march. So, almost entirely before the hit. I think year, two march. So, almost entirely befo are |e hit. I think a historical
