Helena wilkinson, bbc news. 0ur correspondent fiona trott is in tenerife where hundreds of people are still quarantined in a hotel there. What more do you know about whats happening at the hotel . Some of them had to sign documentation before they left, others were having their temperature takes in. Health officials here have confirmed that they are from various countries. Therell be a medical review when they get home that they can return to their home countries. They can leave at the canary islands. But its a bit comp located pictures from what we understand, there appears to be different protocols for different countries. For example, there was a lady explaining she still having to wait. We all know its not had enough money over the last ten years under the conservatives, but look, this cant wait until monday. Borisjohnson needs to be getting on with it now and ministers need to be coming on the television, on the radio, to be offering some reassurance to the public. Shadow Health Secretary there. Lets discuss the virus in a wider context. Professor George Lomonossoff is a virologist from thejohn innes centre, which is an independent centre in plant science, research and microbiology based in norwich. Very good evening to you. You to. Id love to try and get some sort of context id love to try and get some sort of co ntext fro m id love to try and get some sort of context from you because some people are very nervous about this. By the same token, there are plenty of people saying, well, its very sad that people have died, but hundreds of thousands of people die every year around the world from flu. So where is the balance here . How much or dangerous, and your opinion, is this than the flu, which does kill people . Well, the situation really at the moment, its not actually clear. From what we understand, the death rate from this particular virus is actually higher than the affected case, around one to 2 . Influenza is about a tenth of that. However, far more people get inflected with influenza so the total number of death is higher. It all depends out on how quickly it spreads and how it can be contained. Whether its causing more deaths. I think the real problem is people dont know at the moment. Given that uncertainty, do you feel that this country is prepared . Do you feel the public is getting all the information it should, that it knows how to react, if somebody thinks they come into contact with someone . Whats your sense of preparedness of the general approach to this right now in this country . I think people are doing what they can from the knowledge of previous, so the advice about coughing and sneezing and washing hands and the like is fairly standard stuff thats been around for many respiratory diseases. Ever since i can remember. Thatsjust good standard hygiene. Trying to avoid crowds, do that if youre not feeling well with flu, you are told to stay at home, not be brave and go to stay at home, not be brave and go to work. So theres quite sensible things. I think the problem is, and this is so difficult to know, is what does the Spare Capacity stay in hospital beds . They tend to be at this time of year, quite tight. Near their maximum capacity, because it keeps extra money to keep things empty. Cost every money. Will there be a knock on effect for the treatment of other conditions if all the hospital beds have to be used for people with suspected cobit i9 . A quick thought about who is most vulnerable here. It seems to be the elderly. Also those with pre existing conditions. Especially respiratory conditions. At the moment, youre not hearing about many cases of very young people, children. I think that may be a statistical fact because of the relatively small numbers at the moment. It may be something to do with the strength of the immune system. Very interesting to talk to you. Thank you so much. We could speak much longer but many thanks for your expertise tonight. Stock markets have been falling around the world and the footsie 100 has dropped nearly 13 this week making it the biggest one week drop since the financial crisis in 2008. The governor of the bank of england, mark carney, has warned the outbreak could lead to a downgrade in the uks Economic Growth forecasts. In isolation, we would expect that world growth would be lower than it otherwise would be. And that has a knock on effect on the uk. We are not picking it up yet at all in the uk economic indicators, the survey indicators, but if the world is slower than otherwise would become of the uk economy will be impacted but most importantly is to make sure the system is functioning and we are very confident about that and we are on top of it. Joining me from her office in london is economist diana choyleva. Shejoins be she joins be tonight, shejoins be tonight, thanks she joins be tonight, thanks so shejoins be tonight, thanks so much for your time. Such use of balls weve been witnessing. At that to be expected. Such use of fold. Weve been witnessing. At that to be expected. Such use of fold. The gas made the point that we still dont know. The guest. Theres a huge amount of uncertainty here. It was exacerbated by the drastic response of the chinese authorities. So that created already i sense of uncertainty and at this point in time, its not clear that china is managing to contain it, even though they are trying to portray that. And now it spread to the rest of the world. The real issues is that yes, from the perspective of the markets, the death rate might be one to 2 but we could have 100 panic. Markets hate uncertainty of any kind, therefore that is why we are seeing what weve seen in the last week or so. Even china, could we be talking about recession . Could be hit back hard with yellow in chinas case absolutely. The First Quarter will be negative, sharply so. They managed to recover from effects that will be an increase, but the wheel question here is, first of all, when will china returned back to normal . The real question. Thats a place the size of the economy of sweden. Its very critical because it reduces 30 of fertiliser and the chinese ploughing season is about to start. There is a real issue of security here that not many people are talking about and its critical for the the party of china. If we look at how integrated Global Supply chains are an already sorted is are being felt, if the chinese economy seems to have not contain the outbreak, what will be the knock on impact all the rest of the world . Then if we look at the rest of the world, how will the authorities react . Will there be lockdown . Will there be different ways of dealing with containment . What the virologist didnt mention is, sars, it was the warm weather that help dissipate it but at this point in time, scientists are not 100 certain that even with the arrival of the warm weather, this viral outbreak could die out on its own accord. Given everything youve described about the integrated supply chains and the impact on the supply chains and the impact on the supply chains and so on, is there something that economies such as the uk could be doing right now to try to mitigate or are we so reliance now on so to mitigate or are we so reliance now on so much from china that actually, theres not so much we can do . Again, in relation to your report earlier, what we should be saying is much more decisive Government Action here in trying to get the sense that at least policymakers have is under control. In order to avoid the hundred percent panic that i was describing that can have a much worse impact on the economy of the uk or elsewhere, lets say the one to 2 afraid so faron lets say the one to 2 afraid so far on these numbers, the coronavirus. Thanks very much for your perspective tonight. We are hearing that the Railway Station in france is being evacuated because of a major fire station in france is being evacuated because of a majorfire in station in france is being evacuated because of a major fire in the area. We dont know what caused the fire, we dont know which buildings are affected, but we are hearing that the entire major Railway Station is being evacuated. We will keep you up to date with that. Flood hit areas of england and wales are preparing for another weekend of bad weather, this time as a result of storm jorge. In one town in east yorkshire, snaith, more than 60 homes have been evacuated. 0ur correspondent danny savage is in the nearby village of east cowick where residents have been warned disruption disruptiocould last for days. This is becoming an increasingly familiar view in parts of east yorkshire at the moment, flooded homes and flooded streets. And think that the rain that caused this flooding fell about a week ago now its taken a long time to filter down through the system. Its filled up the flood plains in the wash lands, and its now starting to get into the villages and towns around here, causing a fresh round of misery. In the flood plain here in east yorkshire, the rising waterfrom last weeks rain has finally overwhelmed villagers. In east callan, near snaith they were waiting back to their homes this morning to the great concern of others living here. Is actually terrifying. Evil are desperately try to get back to the houses. Ijust ran down to the town council. Hopefully someone will be here. Further along the lane, jan cant believe what happened to her home. Im absolutely devastated. Devastated. Ive been here 20 years. We had a beautiful home. Just look at it. The emotional impact is far worse than the actual impact of the work that we got to do. They knew it was going to be bad when rescuers of evacuated people from their homes here last night. This is why. The flood plains of these rivers stretch for miles now. One area is the size of windemere in the late dick stripped. The problem now is these areas are brimming. Lake district. The last thing they need here is more rain. But they are getting more rain at the moment and with it, more forecast over the weekend, not necessarily to fall here, but further west up on the pennines and up on the hills. Thats where all the water comes from a eventually and filters down the rivers from the Yorkshire Dales into this part the country. This really needs some rest bite around here, but it doesnt look like theyre going to get it. Danny savage reported there. The time is coming up reported there. The time is coming up to 23 minutes past five oclock. Lets return to the story in france. We are hearing that that Railway Station is being evacuated because ofa station is being evacuated because of a large fire in the area and these pictures are from our guest whojoined me now. Thanks for talking to us. Youre one of those who has been moved out of the station yourself. The fire looks huge from my screen. What can you tell us . Their alarms everywhere the whole city was under smoke. The whole city is under smoke but i think its the whole city is under smoke but i think its holding now. Its very smoky out there. You can feel the air. Yes, and we are looking at your pictures at the moment and its an enormous cloud of smoke rising right above the station. So you are in the station and you are moved out along with hundreds of other people i assume. Is with hundreds of other people i assume. Is anyone with hundreds of other people i assume. Is anyone does anyone have any idea what happened, what caused this . I dont speak french so i cant make sense of whats happening. I tried to get some information. Its basically the same at the time, so im not sure. There we re at the time, so im not sure. There were some cars burned. Im not sure because i dont speak french. Were some cars burned. Im not sure because i dont speak frenchlj understand. Thank you very much for sending us those pictures and talking to us so quickly. Just to tell you a few details that we have gotten from one of our producers who is in paris, the bbc has spoken to a Railway Union official who is at the scene. He or she is at the station. That person told the bbc producer that the fire appears to have been caused by protesters who are angry about a concert thats being held nearby. That person did go on to say they dont think anyone has been hurt. The Emergency Services are at the scene, the officials said. Police in paris have tweeted that what translates as intraoral burrell behaviour has been taken place on the margins of a concert. Intolerable behaviour. Police in the area are suggesting that is in fact area are suggesting that is in fact a fire that has been started deliberately. This is early stages and this is the information we have at the moment, but it appears that a number of people who are at the scene believe that that buyer we saw there that fire was started deliberately. Theyre certainly an enormous amount of disruption. People are being moved out and that is causing a huge amount of chaos and rush hour on a friday evening. We will keep you up to date. A man found guilty of murdering a pensioner by shooting him with a crossbow has been jailed for at least 31 years. Gerald corrigan was shot last april as he tried to fix a satellite dish on his home in anglesey in north wales. 39 year old Terence Whall carried out what the police described as a medieval style execution. Prince harry has metjon bonjovi to hear about a Charity Single the rock star is recording for the Invictus Games foundation. unbroken is being produced in the abbey road studios in london, where the beatles recorded many of their albums. It was all smiles at this royal visit, but in canada, the government there has said it wont pay for security for harry and meghan once they are no longer working royals. 0ur royal correspondent Nick Witchell reports. He is packing as much as possible into these remaining days when he is on royal duty. This morning, harry was at the abbey road studios in london, to see the recording of an anthem for his creation, the Invictus Games. All the usual paraphernalia of a royal visit was there a grateful host waiting on the doorstep, in this case the singerjon bonjovi, and not far away, as is customary, harrys security detail, the metropolitan Police Protection officers who are a necessary but discrete part of the lives of all the senior members of the royal family. For harry, theyve always been there, the watchful presence in the background here, on the first public walkabout that harry and meghan did together shortly after their engagement. But how things have changed. Harry is walking away from royal duties and walking away to a very large extent from britain. It is canada that he and meghan now seem to regard as home, but the government ofjustin trudeau has said that, once the couple step back from their royal role, canada will no longer fund the cost of their protection. That poses a problem. If the canadians wont pay for their security, that leaves either the british taxpayer or, of course, the couple themselves. The sums involved wont be small almost certainly more than £1 million a year and there are other issues. British Police Officers arent normally permitted to carry firearms outside the uk. They are all questions to be resolved. For harry though this morning, at the abbey road studios, the focus was on the Invictus Games, an anthem called unbroken, and an opportunity to sing with jon bon jovi. But there is, to stretch the musical metaphor, a long and winding road ahead of him. Nicholas witchell, bbc news. Lets speak to the former head of Royal Protection at the metropolitan police, dai davies. I was going to introduce him. I will speak to him in the moment. The Prime Minister has been speaking about the coronavirus. Lets hear this. Of eastleigh, our thoughts are with the family of the victim in you,. With the family of the victim in you,. Obviously. With the family of the victim in you,. Obviously. The nhs is doing everything they can to support them. But on the wider issue of coronavirus, which obviously is of great concern to people, ijust want to reassure everybody and say the nhs is making every possible preparation and i saw myself, some of the work being done to get ready. As you can imagine, just last night, theissue as you can imagine, just last night, the issue of the coronavirus is something the government is the governments top priority. I had a meeting with people talking about the preparations with officials. Let me repeat the advice of the chief medical officer which i think is the best thing to get across. The most valuable thing you can do to prevent the spread of coronavirus is to wash your hands for 20 seconds or more with hot water and soap, and thats the best piece of advice we can give. Given the potential seriousness of this, the possible strain on the nhs, the impact on the financial markets, why are you waiting until monday to hold a cobra meeting with yellow as i said, we just had a meeting with all the government ministers. Theres been a regular series of cobra meetings to prepare for this eventuality. I think people are right to be concerned and they are right to want to ta ke concerned and they are right to want to take every possible precaution, and in the course of the next few days, we will be reaching further advice about how to respond and how were going to deal with any potential outbreak of the illness. But as i said, the best thing people can do to prevent the spread of coronavirus is wash her hands. The British National who sadly died from coronavirus was a passenger on the diamond princess. Should the government repatriated the citizen on board sooner . I think it was following the best medical advice. 0bviously, following the best medical advice. Obviously, we regret any loss of life and the loss of life of the eventual concern but we think the best thing to do is not to move people around too much in the current situation. Not to repatriate, unless you can be apt absolutely sure there is not going to bea absolutely sure there is not going to be a spread to this country. Thats the principle we are adopting. We are meeting continuously to deal with this. I wa nt continuously to deal with this. I want the public to understand that the nhs is a fantastic system. I saw what preparations are being made in the hospital, looking at the coronavirus and the kind of preparations the nhs is already getting under way. The best way we can help our nhs is to take those elementary precautions. Inc. You mr thank you Prime Minister. Johnson says the issue is now the top priority of the government and the nhs is prepared and urging everybody to follow the advice and the instructions of the chief medical 0fficer which is all about regular hand washing. And the questions theyre reflecting some of the criticism that has been around a lot today. Weve heard it from the shadow Health Secretary for example, questioning why the governments cobra meeting is not happening until monday. The Prime Minister says the nhs is fully prepared. We were interrupted in our conversation about prince harry and his wife and Royal Protection. We will talk about that in the next few minutes but before that, lets turn our attention to the sports news because it is that time of day. Lets start with cricket. After a 42 run win over captain Heather Knight led following up a century last time with 62 as england made 158 47 and pakistan came nowhere near to reaching their target. It was englands bowlers who got the job done. Im not really one for personal, its really why i play the game. It will feel a whole lot sweeter if were there at the mcg lifting the trophy. Thank you very much. Lets talk more about security arrangements for prince harry and his wife. Canada has said it wont pay for the couples security saying they are no longer working whales and that is due to come into effect at the end of march. Lets talk to the former head of protection at the metropolitan police. Thank you so much for waiting. Iam police. Thank you so much for waiting. I am sorry we were interrupted earlier. But as i say, its really not long away, once prince harry is no longer a working while, are you surprised that this is only just while, are you surprised that this is onlyjust being talked about now . Iam in as is onlyjust being talked about now . I am in as with anyjourney to use the same metaphor, this has been a particularly long and arduous journey and i am surprised that im somewhat amazed, frankly, that they are two sides involved in this, the three sides have not actually discussed all of this, some months ago. One of the key things before any journey is preparation. Ago. One of the key things before anyjourney is preparation. And thats the key factor and royalty protection. They are experts at preparing royal visits and the whole issue of protection. And i am most concerned at this latest development. So your point is that once prince harry and his wife started having conversations about wanting to spend a lot of time in canada, those conversations should have been immediately because Protection Security is the number one issue, surely . Youre absolutely right. The advice if you are actually took it and amaze her its coming from because it does not make sense to me, he must know that the potential threat is there and there area number of potential threat is there and there are a number of individuals and i wont go into details, obviously there are more that i dont know about but there are individuals out there who will do or could do harm to all members of the well family and he is not exclusion. The mere fa ct and he is not exclusion. The mere fact that he wants to go away and had a lovely time doing whatever he wa nts to had a lovely time doing whatever he wants to do does not impart if you like on the issue of protection. And royalty protection be been doing this since 1829. They are pretty expert at it. I appreciate of course there is that expertise. Nonetheless, there are plenty of high profile people in the wild, financiers, actors, who employ their own private security teams because they have to. Presumably prince harry and his wife feel that they can employ people like that there are private suppliers out there. Can employ people like that there are private suppliers out therem thatis are private suppliers out therem that is the case then maybe the beggars belief because its one issue to have private security but they dont have access to government Intelligence Committee dont have access to the latest information on terrorism and be fixated on people who are mentally ill. If thats the case, they are very badly advised and im astonished that this advice has not been getting fairly for us to bei has not been getting fairly for us to be i would have thought. Very good to talk to you, thank you very much for your time and thank you for staying on to speak with us. We will talk more about the story dominating here of course, the coronavirus. The World Health Organisation is now classifying the risk of coronavirus as very high. They have urged countries to focus on aggressive containment measures, with a view to interrupting the chain of transmission, or at least slow it down. How should employers respond to the coronavirus . Charlie netherton is from the Risk Consultancy firm marsh, hejoins me from sheffield. So, if you were running a company in this country, large or small, have you been watching the news in the last couple of weeks, what would you be doing right now . What we say to all of our clients is nasty things to consider here, people, your business, and your supply chain. Now, a lot of the focus in the last few weeks has been on supply chain but increasingly as the outbreak has spread beyond china, people are thinking what about my people, what should i be doing about people in the uk and around the rest of the world and what measures should i be actively taking . In terms of the nuts and bolts as it were, in terms of the workforce, is it really basic measures like starting to put in place in situations where people can easily work from home in case they feel they need to self eight, if it literally the nuts and bolts of how you operate your business that way . You have to remember that every business is different. So we had seen business is different. So we had seen clients recently if you think about, we have seen clients who have banned all Global Travel and feeding ofa claim banned all Global Travel and feeding of a claim to have band traveljust as certain areas and their other clients who are continuing with all travel with very few exceptions, business as usual. Thats the decision that each Employer Needs to make individually. But of course the issues that people need to think about are much wider than just travel. So, you mentioned hygiene, you mentioned working from home, of course in some industries itsjust not appropriate for people to be able to work from home. There may be manufacturing or logistics industry. The event that there are still things you can do. We have got clients who are thinking about split shifts, we have but other organisations that are thinking about how did he increase their physical distance between their employees. There are others who are just taking my simple measures like increasing cleaning frequencies and encouraging increased hygiene. Im sorry, we cant speak any longer, but thank you very much for your insights tonight. Thank you. Very busy evening here.
