Colluding with russia during the president ial election. Hes appearing before a Senate Investigations panel. The government promises an energy revolution, investing hundreds of millions pounds in Battery Technology. And 20 years after her death, Prince William says he often talks of granny diana to keep his mothers memory alive for his children. Its five oclock, our top story is that the parents of the terminally ill baby, charlie gard, have ended their legal fight to take him to the United States for experimental treatment. The high court was told they now accepted no medical treatment could help him. Charlies mother, connie yates, said she believed time had been wasted and earlier treatment could have improved the quality of her sons life. Speaking Outside Court a short time ago, charlies father, chris gard, said they now planned to spend some last Precious Moments with their son. Helena lee has been following the case at the high court and we canjoin her now. It has been a distressing afternoon at court. We expected to hear more evidence from that meeting between the american doctor who had proposed that experimental treatment on charlie when he came over last week to london. He met with medical staff at great ormond street and they carried out an mri scan on charlie. But instead this afternoon, we have heard from the lawyer representing charlies parents that time had run out for the baby, they said. They had looked at the mri scan and realised that charlie is brain damaged and it is irreversible. And the therapy will no longer help them. Charlies mother connie said some words in Court Earlier today and many people in court broke down in tears, including some members of the legal team. This has been a complex and emotive case and with the background, here is our correspondent. Justice for charlie it is the Ha Rd Est Justice For Charlie it is the hardest thing we will ever have to do. That is what charlies parents said. Let their Beautiful Boy go and be with the angels. Wean your son, which is why we continue fighting. Charlie has been left with his illness to deteriorate devastatingly to the point of no return. This is also never been about payments interests. All we wanted to do was ta ke interests. All we wanted to do was take charlie to The One World Renowned Hospital in an attempt to save his life and be treated by the world leader in the disease. We will have to live with the what Ifs Double Haunt Us for the rest of our lives. Our son is an absolute warrior and we could not be prouder of him. And we will miss him terribly. His body, Heart And Soul may sooii terribly. His body, Heart And Soul may soon be gone but his spirit will live on fertility and he will make a difference to peoples lies for years to come. Live on for eternity. We will make sure of that. Were now going to spend our last Precious Moments with our son, charlie, who will not make his first birthday injust charlie, who will not make his first birthday in just under two weeks time. Charlie, mummy and daddy love you so much. We always have and we always will and were so sorry we could not save you. Sweet dreams, baby. Sleep tight, our beautiful little boy. We love you. Chris gard connie yates have been by charlies side throughout. He was born last august, a seemingly healthy baby. And after a few weeks, it became clear something was wrong. He was diagnosed with a very rare genetic condition causing Muscle Wastage and brain damage. In march this year, the medics at Great Ormond Street Hospital determined that such was charlies condition, his treatment should be withdrawn and he should be allowed to did i die with dignity. His parents could not except the decision and believed there was still hopeful son. An Online Campaign garnered support and nations reaching over £1 million to pay for experimental treatment at a hospital in america, treatment so new that it had never been trialled on animals or humans with the rare genetic disorder. However, judges at every level to the European Court determined that would not be in charlies best interests. Throughout the long legal process, the relationship of the parents and the hospital deteriorated. Relationship of the parents and the hospital deterioratedlj relationship of the parents and the hospital deteriorated. I still do this they cannot get my head around it. We took him to the hospital. They dont want to do the treatment but there is someone out there that does. And they basicallyjust kept him a prisoner there. Our parental rights were stripped the minute we took him in the. And in hindsight, thatis took him in the. And in hindsight, that is when we lost. Then came a series of high profile interventions from pope francis, the vatican offering to transfer charlie to rome. President trump tweeted that he would be delighted to help. White house officials balked at the family in hospital. The Foreign Office got involved. And today charlies pa rents involved. And today charlies parents ended their fight. Great ormond street hospital had gone back to court after the family said that there was new information. But after examining charlie, an american doctor who said he could help told them it wasnt possible. All the doctors agree that damage to his muscle and tissue was irreversible. Great ormond street hospital said that the agony, desolation and bravery of the payments decision and the utmost respect. Lets rejoin our correspondent at the high court. This seems to be the End Of The Road in this terrible case. The doctors must now work regime for simply offering Palliative Care for Little Charlie. Thats right. And they have a court order that is in place now. That is what will happen. Charlies parents left the high court here in the last half an hour or so. We assume that they have now gone to great ormond street, which is about one mile is a lwa ys street, which is about one mile is always review, to be by charlies bedside. They say that they were to spend their last Precious Moments into the sea, and what will happen next is is very difficult and private discussions between themselves and medical staff. The doctors and nurses who are treated charlie for the last six or seven months in Intensive Care. He needs a ventilator to believe at the moment and he cannot swallow. He has very limited senses. His brain is damaged. So that conversation will be had at some stage in the very near future as to how the parents would like to proceed, how and when they want that to happen, for charlie to be moved from intensive Ca Re Charlie to be moved from Intensive Care to that palliative to regime to die, as Great Ormond Street Has said all along, to die with limited. 0k, all along, to die with limited. Ok, thank you. Die with dignity. Well dr bruce cohen is the director of the neuro developmental Science Centre at akron Childrens Hospital in ohio. Hes an expert in Mitochondrial Disease, and has been following the charlie gard case. Thank you very much indeed for joining us. It is good to see you. Chris gard, charlies father, said, we will have to live with the what if the mac for the rest of our lives. And the argument from the family is very much that the doctors are great ormond street did not act quickly enough, that the Brain Deterioration from last january until now is simply too far gone for any kind of help to be given to charlie. Is that a Fair Assessment . Well, i first heard charlie. Is that a Fair Assessment . Well, ifirst heard of charlie. Is that a Fair Assessment . Well, i first heard of charlies pa rents well, i first heard of charlies parents decision a few moments ago. Iam parents decision a few moments ago. I am deeply moved by both his mother and fathers comments. I want to Point Out One of the things his father said. Charlie, in Point Out One of the things his fathersaid. Charlie, in his Point Out One of the things his father said. Charlie, in his short life, has been an outstanding teacher and educator. What he gives to the world, Teaching Millions and millions of people about Mitochondrial Disease, isjust. People live their whole lives and do not make an impact that charlie made in the last few weeks, as we have heard more about him. I wish i could tell you definitively an answer to your question, but what we do not know is that in 2017, we have treatments available to us that we did not have an 2016 that a changing lives and will change the lives of children and adults with Mitochondrial Disease. Treatment is being developed today that had existed one year ago, would result in people being alive today. So, we are the real reasons edge of medicine moving forward. It is a very exciting time in medicine but this whole case, unfortunately, left charlie behind. What would you agree that there was a small window of opportunity, just a few months, within which perhaps this experimental treatment could have been tried and could have had success , been tried and could have had success, probably, more than likely, according to the percentages, 10 chance of success, 90 chance of failure. By that window of opportunity was squandered. That is what the family suggests. Opportunity was squandered. That is what the family Suggestslj Opportunity was squandered. That is what the family suggests. I just dont know the answer to that. I wish i could tell the family one way 01 wish i could tell the family one way or the other. His father says they will have to live with this uncertainty for the rest of their lives. That is a burden that no one would be able to take away from them. What we do know is that his Mitochondrial Disease was one of the worst. Results in certain death. It would also know that this new experimental therapy has shown, certainly in Animal Models and some humans, some benefit. Unfortunately for charlie, wejust humans, some benefit. Unfortunately for charlie, we just wont know the a nswer for charlie, we just wont know the answer that starting treatment one month, two months or three months ago would have been helpful. One wonders, as you have been outlining, the continuing move for the research and development and the possibility of finding new treatments and cures for that then the line in the future. One wonders of the courts are the right place to be discussing this kind of thing. I mean, it feels as if, if maybe american doctors could have had a conversation with british doctors are charlies bedside months ago, then we might not have gone down this road. With medical decisions such as these, we would love to keep them out of the courts as much as possible. Really, the best conversations and decisions are generally made with parents and physicians looking at each other face to face and try to figure out what is best for the child. Ijust dont know the details of the timing of this case to really comment on the specifics or give you answers to the specifics or give you answers to the specifics or give you answers to the specific questions you have. My knowledge of this case is what i read in the newspapers. It is good to see you. I give joining read in the newspapers. It is good to see you. I givejoining us. Thank you forjoining us. Lets move on to some of the other news today. Donald trumps son in law and senior advisor, Jared Kushner, is appearing before a special us Senate Investigations panel, looking into alleged collusion between moscow and the trump 2016 president ial campaign. In a written statement, issued before the Closed Door Session, mr kushner insisted he hadnt had any improper contacts with russian officials. Our correspondent andy moore has the details. Jared kushner set out from his home in washington today for the short journey to the senate buildings. Ahead of the hearing, he released an 11 page statement giving his side of the story. Mr kushner, was it appropriate for you to meet with the russian officials . There has been much speculation about what will come out of todays Closed Door Session. Jared kushner, the president s son in law. The Person Of Interest has a name and that name isJared Kushner. Jared kushner is not used to being centrestage. As one of Donald Trumps closest advisers, he has been silent at his side, seen but rarely heard. But he has done some talking with russians. First with the Russian Ambassador sergey kislyak, and then with this man, sergey gorkov. He is the head of a russian bank tied to the kremlin. When asked by the bbc about the subject of that meeting, he said, ask the white house. The revelations made mr kushner front page news. His Father In Law did not seem to pleased. His Father In Law did not seem too pleased. Jared has actually become much more famous than me. I am a little bit upset about that. Now, in a statement before his committee appearance, mr kushner has said that he had four contacts with russian officials but denied any wrongdoing. He said. Mr kushner was also part of the meeting with the russian lawyer arranged by Donald Trumer in a series of e mails that promised dirt on hillary clinton. He is bound to be asked about it in congress today. We want to know whether these meetings took place, whether other meetings took place, and we have a lot of ground to cover. Some democrats have described mr kushner as a threat to national security. But republicans say that this is his chance to clear things up. The whole purpose of the meeting is weve got to explain, heres how i met the Russian Ambassador, heres what we talked about, heres how i met the banker guy, heres what we talked about. Heres how i found the e mail about the meeting. And once he gives his side of the story, then we can make an informed decision. Yesterday, the white house said it hoped mr kushners appearance before congress would be the last time he would have to talk about russia. That is very unlikely. Laura bicker is in washington for us. By by all accounts, he is still being grilled. With the way these things 90, grilled. With the way these things go, something is bound to leak out, even though it is behind closed doors. Any sense of what is going on in there . Lets start with that statement. He was clear and said there was no collision on his part or anyones party knew of only Trump Campaign with russia. But he did go into more detail about that meeting he had with a russian lawyer. That lawyer that promised them incriminating evidence about hillary clinton. And in the e mail chain, it did say that that evidence and incriminating evidence was being given because of russia and its governments support for dommett de macdonald trump. When it comes to that e mail, Jared Kushner says he did not actually look at the details. And when he went to the meeting, he turned up late and during the meeting he said it was a waste of time. There was no evidence giving. He said he tried to leave early. He had other meetings with the Russian Ambassador and the head of the bank linked to the kremlin but he said he did that to try and gain russian contacts so that there could be some kind of development between russia and the Trump Administration once they took power. But he said they took that meeting but the key thing is there was no contact before that time. One other thing he has done with that statement is diffused many of the bonds on the front pages in the last year months. But if anything else notice from the hearings, he could be in difficulty. We expect to hear from Jared Kushner himself from the white house with the statement in the next hour and well bring you that here on The News Channel if we can. Indeed. Thank you. The government is promising what it calls a revolution in the way electricity is generated, used and stored, saying households could save up to £40 billion by 2050. A special fund to Award Hundreds of millions of pounds to companies researching Battery Technology is being created, part of a broader strategy to help the uk become much more flexible in its energy production. Heres our environment analyst, roger harrabin. The future of motoring looks electric as governments strive to combat pollution and climate change. Batteries are still big, heavy and expensive. It needs a solution. In birmingham, the Business Secretary put batteries at the heart of his industrial strategy. Joining together the research, development, application and manufacture of Energy Storage technologies, and specifically battery storage, is a huge opportunity for the Energy Sector and the automotive sector alike. Catching up with big chinese firms, like the makers of this byd car, will be tough. They have had years of huge support from their government. But batteries of all sizes will be needed. This one, near leighton buzzard, holds energy generated by wind power for the national grid. Our washing will play a part in the future energy system. People will be offered cheap power to clean their clothes when solar energy is plentiful on a sunny day. Even fridges of the future will play a part in the energy system. When theres a surge in demand on the grid, an Internet Signal will ask your fridge to switch off for a few moments. If enough people are switching off, it will save a Power Station being built, and in turn, it will save you some cash. There is a massive opportunity now to go from a system where the only job of the consumer was to pay the bill, to a system where energy flows to and from consumers. The need a flexible electricity will and grow. Overnight, this Floating Wind farm made in norway was being towed to be moored off the east coast of scotland. It will store energy for when we need it. The first phase of todays announcement will be a £115 million Competition Led by the engineering and physical Sciences Research council, to create a virtual Battery Institute to address the Biggest Challenges facing the industry. Professor Philip Nelson is its chief executive. It is good to see you. Thanks for coming in. A virtual Battery Institute. Explain. We have fantastic capability in the uk in things like basic chemistry, materials science, electro chemistry, where the interaction between electric phenomenon and chemistry mixed together. We have fantastic Research Laboratories already in place. What were trying to do is network them together a Virtual Institute that will tackle what we call the faraday challenge. That is . It is to focus on making sure that we in the uk can be delayed in Battery Technology. Because as your piece set, the introduction, the whole automotive sector is driven by the prospects of electric vehicles. We have been seeing them on the streets already know. We need to be ahead of the game and it comes to the latest generation of batteries. The point is it is all very well taking this fantastic power, cheap hourfrom solar energy, wind energy and so on, environmentally friendly, deals with climate change, but if you cant store it anywhere, it is pointless. And that is the point of getting mass of exactly. Point of getting massive batteries. Exactly. It is critical. These sources go on and off with the wind and sun. We need to store the energy when it is available. And make it available when it is dark. It is interesting because these batteries have been around for a long time. One would have thought it mightjust need a few Twea Ks A Nd Have thought it mightjust need a few tweaks and you have the Technology Already . You can never really predict what will happen when you fund basic science. That is one of the really exciting prospects. It will take a fresh look at some of the technologies developed. Many have been evolving in the last 30 yea rs have been evolving in the last 30 years and you do see big shifts. For example, from Lead Acid Batteries to lithium ion batteries, which are much lighter and have a longer lifetime, for example. Batteries have changed a lot. But we do see scope for doing things better. And the demands of absolutely therefore a whole wide range of industries, not just the automotive a whole wide range of industries, notjust the automotive industry. Other industries are very worried about potential disruption to their businesses from electric energy. The Aerospace Industry is keen to understand what we could do with a certain limit of electrification. Give us an example of the kind of future battery that would be ideal to deal with this situation. |j future battery that would be ideal to deal with this situation. I think that the specification for such a batter the depends on the application. For example, in not a motive, making sure your car can go 400, 500 motive, making sure your car can go 400,500 miles motive, making sure your car can go 400, 500 miles rather than 40 or 50 would be a very clear objective. The achieve ability remains to be seen. We must absolutely explore those possibilities and be ahead of the field of technology in this country. That is the aim of the faraday challenge, as we call it. Absolutely fascinating. Hopefully some of the cash that youre putting in will help. Thank you. A 33 year old man has appeared in court, charged with the kidnap, rape and murder of a 19 year old woman. Hes also accused of the kidnap, rape, and attempted murder of a woman in her 20s. Another man, whos 28, has been charged with the kidnap of both women. The 19 year olds body was found at a house in kingston on wednesday. Both men were remanded in custody. Britains Economic Growth forecast has been downgraded by the International MonetaryFund Following a weaker than expected performance at the start of the year. In april, it was predicted the economy would grow by 2 but that figure has now been revised down to 1. 796. The treasury says the report highlights the importance of a good brexit deal with the eu. The International Trade secretary, liam fox, is holding talks in washington, laying the ground work for a possible trade deal with the United States after brexit. Eu rules prevent britain signing any agreement or entering talks following withdrawal from the eu, however mr fox says the uk is open for business. Our correspondent is in westminster. The point is that liam fox has to be careful and cant enter into formal negotiations because we are still in the eu. We are still part of the block. But he has to lay the groundwork and get this thing going. That is what hes in washington. It has long been a nap dummett argument for those who wanted the uk to leave the eu for something, like liam fox, that by leaving the shackles of the eu, the uk can go off and forge new trading relationships with other countries around the world and make the most of those opportunities. That is what were seeing liam fox trying do now. That is why he is in washington for these early stage trade talks. It is right seen before we formally leave the european union, no deal can be signed. And there is a question on whether anything could be signed off even if we entered the transitional period after the official brexit date. But that did not stop liam fox from being very optimistic about what he sees as the future opportunities. This is since peaking in washington are little bit earlier. Us firms employ more than one Million People in the united kingdom, and the uk firms employ more than one million americans here. Us companies are investing in the uk, seeing a familiar environment built on economic fundamentals, which allow businesses to flourish. They are attracted by our low tax and low regulation economy, universities which sit alongside their american counterparts in all global top ten lists, a highly skilled and educated workforce, a Cutting Edge Research environment, and the ability to operate in the perfect time zone for global trading. These fundamentals will not change, and the uk will always be open for business. Now, one issue that could come up as pa rt now, one issue that could come up as part of a uk us trade deal is whether the uk would allow the import of chicken that has been washed and chlorine. That is currently accepted in the us but not in the uk or the european union. Liam fox was asked about this today and played down any suggestion of a iow and played down any suggestion of a row about it. In fact, he said the british media were obsessed with this idea of chlorine washed chicken and if it were to come on, it was miles and miles than the road. Nonetheless, labour has a warning about this and this is the shadow chancellor, john mcdonnell. We wa nt we want no lowering of Consumer Standards or environmental standards, or employment standards. That is the bottom line of any negotiations with us. If we start undermining and unpicking regulations relating to these, i think we undermine our Competitive Position to the rest of the world, evenif position to the rest of the world, even if we secure one trade deal. In addition to that, i think people would be worried. This issue around chickens and food standards, i think it would be a worry in this country if we laud them. One thing liam fox did concede today was the idea of finalising a trade deal with the u by the brexit deadline of march 2019 being optimistic. He said there was a growing consensus that we would have to adapt to changing relationships with the year. But he said that brexit is happening and anyone who wa nts to brexit is happening and anyone who wants to thought it is just dreaming. Thwart. Prince william has revealed how he tells his Children Stories about their grandmother, diana, princess of wales, to keep her memory alive. Next month marks the 20th Anniversary of her death. Our royal correspondent Nicholas Witchells report contains some flash photography. She was once one of the most recognised figures in the world. Constantly, or so it seemed, in the headlines, but 20 years after dianas death, there is now a generation which scarcely knows her. Among them, of course, are her two grandchildren, george and charlotte. So, how does william keep his mothers memory alive for his son and daughter . I think constantly talking about granny diana, so we have more photos up round the house of her, and we talk about her a bit and stuff. Its hard because obviously catherine didnt know her, so she cannot really provide that level of detail, so i, i do regularly, putting george and charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try and remind them there are two grandmothers, there were two grandmothers in their lives, and so it is important they know who she was, and that she existed. Perhaps the most effective way of keeping dianas memory alive was her charity work. One of her most significant contributions was to break down the stigma which then attached to people with aids. In 1987, during a visit to middlesex hospital, she shook hands with an aids patient. A small gesture, but one which is remembered today by all those who have campaigned for greater understanding of aids. It was considered to be a gay disease, and for someone who was within the royal family and who was a woman and straight, and to have someone care from the other side was an incredible gift. You can see it. You look back to these days, when actually the reality was doom and gloom. Absolutely. It was doom and gloom, yet everybody in that photograph is smiling. Because of her. Yes. 20 years after her death, it is, as william himself has said, a tribute to diana from her two sons, and an opportunity to introduce her to a new audience. Nicholas witchell, bbc news. Time for a look at the weather. Heres tomasz schafernaker. It has been a Beautiful Day in some parts of the uk. Cloudy in the capital in eastern parts. Cool and drizzly. But in scotland, in wales and the south west, temperatures in the mid 20s and it has been a beautiful summers day. The Satellite Picture shows the picture across the west, whereas eastern areas have been stuck underneath the gloomy weather with rain and drizzle at times. But more in what areas are just about getting sunshine before sunset. Across the midlands, for example, and central and southern england. What is happening in the next 24 hours . We will still keep some played across the extreme east of the country but many of us are actually go to have clear skies tonight. Clear spells at the very least. 13, 14 celsius, those sorts of values. Tomorrow, we can look forward to a very pleasant summers day. It will be, and fortunately, the best ever week. Just one day as things go downhill very quickly. Tuesdayis things go downhill very quickly. Tuesday is 23 celsius. On wednesday, a wall of water splashing its way across the uk. It was busy yesterday, but in the last hour, Great Britain have won two golds in the pool at the World Aquatics Championship in hungary. Adam peaty has retained his world title in the 100 metres breastroke. He couldnt break his own world record but stormed home over a second clear of his rivals to secure Great Britains first gold in the pool in budapest. Ross murdoch was also in the final but came last. Peaty hasnt lost a major championship race in three years over this distance and victory means he still holds the full set of titles. Hes olympic, world, european and commonwealth champion. Two months after rio, its going to be so hard to get back what i had a career but im more than happy to come here and my title, and year after year now. I was a bit longer to the wall as well, but im so happy with that. Was that the pace you plan to go out or do you think that excitement got you a bit tonight . I felt like a little boy again going out in a crowd. A world record for a reason, that performance at the olympics was just com pletely performance at the olympics was just completely different to that swim. I was on target for it but ijust missed out. Lets see what i can get tomorrow in the 50. The top ten fastest times in the world annual brushstroke, thats insane to me, to be honest. You are an amazing role model. You aware that pressure . Not really. I got a massive cheer when i came out. That means something to me. Especially when most of this crowd is hungarian, that means ive got a lot of sport around the world. Try to give it back home, get the young ones swimming and racing, teach them to have no fear at all. And theres been another british World Champion in the last few minutes. Ben proud has won the 50m butterfly the 22 year old is the commonwealth champion over the same distance, and also the 50 metre freestyle but this is the biggest title of his career. Just missed out on the podium in rio in the freestyle, this win came as something of a surprise because he had only qualified as fourth quickest for the final. Had only qualified as fourth quickest for the finallj had only qualified as fourth quickest for the final. I dont know what to say, im on the verge of tea rs. What to say, im on the verge of tears. Its been a dream since i was six years old. I thought about winning, it has not been on my mind since last night. I think that has really helped. I just since last night. I think that has really helped. Ijust went in. Getting a medal would be nice, but. He cant believe it. A great hourin but. He cant believe it. A great hour in the pool for england. The england cricket captain Heather Knight says their world cup win could be a watershed moment for the womens game. It was a thrilling final at a packed lords that saw Them Beat India by nine runs. This was the team today, back at the ground, with the trophy that they last won in 2009. Theyve won it four times in all. Bowler Anya Shrubsole was the match winner yesterday with six wickets. You dream of these moments. When you know the final is at lords you dream you will be at that final, at lords. You never really dream that you are going to take that final wicket, but its a reality now. Just so wicket, but its a reality now. Just so happy, the whole team is, to have done this. There is no better time for women and girls to play cricket here in the uk. Its something that has been growing at a huge rate. This world cup as a whole and definitely the final is a watershed moment, to be out here at lords with a full house, making an unbelievable amount of noise. Hopefully that will inspire some people do think, i would like to be out here one day playing cricket for england. Manchester city have now completed the signing of full back Benjamin Mendy from monaco for 52 Million Pounds. Thats a world record for defender. The France International has signed a five year deal. After the signings of kyle walker and danilo, city have spent almost 130 Million Pounds on fullbacks this summer. Thats all sport for now. You can keep up to date with all those stories on the bbc sport website. Thats bbc. Co. Uk sport and ill have more in sportsday at 6. 30pm. We will be going live to budapest for reaction to those golds in the pool and live with the england cricket captain Heather Knight. Thank you. Donald trumps son in law and senior advisor, Jared Kushner is expected to make a statement from the white house. We are expecting him to emerge from those doors and talk soon. He has been grilled for a few hours today bya been grilled for a few hours today by a Senate CongressionalInvestigations Panel looking into possible collusion between members of Donald TrumpsCampaign Team in the 2016 election, and russian officials, Jared Kushner in a statement before that Closed Door Session on capitol hill today made it clear that he did not collude with any russians and he did not know of anyone else who colluded with any russians from mrjohns Campaign Team. We are expecting that statement to be given flesh, as it were, on camera. In the next few minutes, the podium is there waiting for him to arrive. If we get that in time we will bring it to you here on The News Channel. Let;s return now to our top story the end of the legal battle lets return now to our top story the end of the legal battle to take charlie gard, the terminally ill baby to america for an experimental treatment. His parents connie yates and chris gard have been fighting for months to prevent doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital turning off the life support for ten month old charlie but this afternoon the high court was told they now accepted that no medical treatment could help him. Lets take a look back at his parents legal battle. At the beginning of march this year, mrjustice francis starts to analyse the case at a hearing in the Family Division of the high court in london. On April The 11th the High Court Judge says doctors can stop providing life support treatment. Then at the start of may, charlies parents ask court of appealjudges to consider the case. The court of appealjudges dismiss the couples appeal on may 25th. Onjune the 8th charlies parents lose their fight in the supreme court. Later in june, judges in the European Court of human rights start to analyse the case, after lawyers representing charlies parents make written submissions. A week later they refuse to intervene. Then at the start ofjuly, as the case gains coverage worldwide, the pope and us President Donald Trump offer to help provide care. Earlier this month his parents returned to the high court, as doctors apply for a fresh hearing to examine new evidence. Today they announced they were ending their legal fight. Firstly, id like to think our legal team have worked tirelessly on our behalf for free. And to the nurses and staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital, who have cared for charlie and kept him comfortable and stable for so long. Wed also like to thank everybody who supported us, including all the people here for us today. This is one of the hardest things that we will ever have to say, and were about to do the hardest thing that well ever have to do, which is to let our beautiful Little Charlie go. Put simply, this is about a sweet, gorgeous, innocent little boy, who was born with a rare disease, who had a real, genuine chance at life, and a family who love him so very dearly, and thats why we fought so hard for him. We are truly devastated to say that, following the most recent mri scan of charlies muscles, as requested in the recent mdt meeting by dr hirano, as charlies devoted and loving parents, weve decided its no longer in charlies best interests to pursue treatment, and well let our son go and be with the angels. The american and italian team were still willing to treat charlie after seeing both his recent brain mri and Eeg Perfomred last week, but there is one simple reason why Treatment Cannot now go ahead, and that is time. A whole lot of time has been wasted. Were now injuly, and our poor boy has been left to lie in hospital for months without any treatment whilst Lengthy Court battles have been fought. Tragically, having had charlies medical notes reviewed by independent experts, we now know had charlie been given the treatment sooner, he would have had the potential to be a normal, healthy little boy. Despite his condition injanuary, charlies muscles were in pretty good shape. Far from showing irreversible, catastrophic, structural brain damage, dr hirano and other expects say his brain scans and eegs were relatively normal for a child of his age. We knew it ourselves, because as his parents, we knew our son, which is why we continued fighting. Charlies been left with his illness to deteriorate, devastatingly, to the point of no return. It has also never been about parents know best. All we wanted to do was take charlie from one world renowned hospital, to another world renowned hospital, in an attempt to save his life and to be treated by the world leader in Mitochondrial Disease. We will have to live with the what ifs, which will haunt us the rest of our lives. Despite the way our beautiful son has been spoken about sometimes, as if hes not worthy of a chance at life, our son is an absolute warrior, and we could not be prouder of him. And well miss him terribly. His body, Heart And Soul may soon be gone, but his spirit will live on for eternity, and hell make a difference to peoples lives for years to come. Well make sure of that. Were now going to spend our last Precious Moments with our son, charlie, who, unfortunately, wont make his first birthday in just under two weeks time. And well ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time. To charlie, we say, mummy and daddy, we love you so much, we always have and we always will and were so sorry we couldnt save you. Sweet dreams, baby, sleep tight, our beautiful little boy, we love you. Joining me now from oxford is lizzie tandy a former neo natal nurse from norfolk and Norwich University hospital. Thank you forjoining us. At the heart of this case, obviously is a fragile, tiny little baby, and his well being. But what is also crucial to the outcome of this case has been a marked breakdown in trust between the doctors treating him and his pa rents. The doctors treating him and his parents. Yes. Which is a real shame, because both doctors and Nursing Staff would want to do the best for charlie in this situation. Obviously primarily his parents. Obviously i am not bad, i cannot comment at all kind of communications and relationships the doctors have had there. Obviously i am not there. But i would imagine they have only ever tried to do the best for them, and its such a shame it has had to come to this lengthy decision. Because really, charliejust needs to die with dignity now. Can you understand what seems to be a sense of anger on their part . They believe there was a window of opportunity from january until now, in which this treatment they believe could have taken place, and would have given charlie, although a very short small chance of some kind of meaningfulfuture, still small chance of some kind of meaningful future, still a chance small chance of some kind of meaningfulfuture, still a chance of a future, and at the moment it is clear from that statement that they feel angry, they feel let down, and that the doctors somehow did not do what they should have done. This is a very difficult situation for the pa rents. A very difficult situation for the parents. My thoughts and prayers go out to them today for this absolutely devastating decision may now have to make. But, again, i can only comment on my previous experience, and in situations like this where we have had end of life ca re this where we have had end of life care to deal with, the medical and Nursing Staff have always only ever tried to do what is best at that particular child. I cant comment on this case particularly because i have not been there, i have not read the notes been involved in any communications with the parents, but all i would say, hand on heart, is that those medical and Nursing Professionals will have done their absolute utmost best to try to get this situation resolved as quickly as possible. To involve the courts isa as possible. To involve the courts is a real last minute, absolute decision for any nursing or medical Tea M Decision for any nursing or medical team to do. They will not have done that lightly and they will not have done it withoutjust cause. What that lightly and they will not have done it without just cause. What do you think is going through the mind of the staff, the nurses and doctors, you know now . Its absolutely devastating. None of us as Nursing Professionals or medical professionals want to have to be in this situation. It is absolutely devastating. Those nurses particularly who will have been with charlie, pretty much 20 47 on their shift patterns, they will be absolutely devastated. I think as well and certainly from my own point of view, there has to be some sort of view, there has to be some sort of relief as well, so that charlie can now die with dignity. With his pa rents, can now die with dignity. With his parents, in their arms, with no equipment, they willjust be able to give him that nice, Lovely Cuddle they have been so long wanting, without any kind of tubes of medical equipment around them. Im not sure how long charlies end of life care will take, i would how long charlies end of life care will take, iwould imagine how long charlies end of life care will take, i would imagine from personal experience not very long. The important thing is those Nursing Staff particularly will make sure that that is absolutely paramount, that that is absolutely paramount, that they get the time with their son. Part of what is so sad about this case is the fact that it did have to go to the courts. It had to involve a judge and lawyers and barristers and all the paraphernalia of that formal setting. When the doctors on the parents just somehow could not get it together. Absolutely. Not in itself is an absolutely awful situation that anybody to be in. You know, sadly that also is where that time bracket as we discussed earlier has gone. It is such a lengthy process doing anything like that through the courts. It is always such a lengthy process , courts. It is always such a lengthy process, and as you say, for some unknown reason the communication between charlies parents and the medical teams for whatever reason just broke down. Thanks for your time. This is bbc news at 5 the headlines parents of the terminally ill baby charlie gard, have ended their legalfight, for treatment in the us. They said valuable time had been wasted. President trumps advisor and son in law, Jared Kushner, has insisted that neither he nor anyone else from the Trump Election Campaign colluded with russia. Three men have been given suspended prison sentences, disqualified from driving and fined, after being filmed racing at 134 mph on a dual carriageway near birmingham. Amar paul, Tejinder Bhuee and zafar iqbal, were being followed by undercover police. Thejudge at Birmingham Crown court said they avoided being sent to jail, only because there wasnt an accident. Phil mackie reports. Driving conditions were horrendous, it was dark, there was torrential rain, but that didnt stop this terrifying illegal street race. Tejinder bhuee and zafar iqbal were driving their mercedes at breakneck speeds alongside amar paul, in a golf. They seemed oblivious to the risks they were taking with theirs and others lives. This was a disinterested Zafar Iqbal Being Questionned immediately afterward. What are you doing in excess of 120 . No . This is the stretch where the racing usually occurs, downhere. Among the officers in pursuit, pc mark hodson. Literally these people drive their cars like they think theyre in a film or on a video game. Of course, its not like a film or a video game, because its real life, things do go wrong. They go wrong all the time, when people drive in this manner. The consequences are just tragic and we have to pick up the pieces. Illegal Street Racing in the West Midlands has already cost lives. Student Rebecca Mcmanus was killed while waiting at a bus stop with a friend on the way to a hen party. Theres now a permanent memorial at the place where she died. Its the complete stupidity of the whole thing. To race like that, with no thought of the consequences, when the consequences have been so devastating. Rebecca lost her life. Weve lost our daughter, rebecca has been lost to so many people. They lost their liberty fora bit, and. They brought ridicule on their own families for doing such a stupid thing, and it is a stupid thing to do. Local authorities have begun to take out High Court Injunctions like this, giving the police greater powers to stop motorists gathering and taking part in illegal racing. There is some evidence they are working. In places like this the problem has declined, but there is still a hard core of motorists willing to take part in illegal Street Racing, putting theirs and other peoples lives at risk. Police believe that if the three men had been sent to jail, it would have sent out a strong message to street racers. An operation targeting them has already seen the number of incidents fall dramatically. More than 20 drivers have been disqualified and more than 60 cars have been seized. British Scientists Say they are worried that the Greenland Ice sheet may melt faster than expected and raise the levels of the oceans more than previously thought. They say warmer conditions are encouraging algae to grow in the ice and darken its surface and this matters because darker ice absorbs more of the suns rays and melts more rapidly. So although greenland is one of the remotest parts of the planet, changes there could affect millions of people in low lying areas around the world. Our science editor David Shukman has this exclusive report on the latest research. A Vivid Blue Snakes across the green and ice sheet, a beautiful sight, but when the ice here melts, the ocea ns but when the ice here melts, the oceans rise around the world. On the horizon, the ice sheet looms ahead of us. We havejoined a horizon, the ice sheet looms ahead of us. We have joined a team horizon, the ice sheet looms ahead of us. We havejoined a team of british scientists. They are trying to understand how the ice is changing. We touched down in one of the remotest corners of the planet. The first task is to set up camp, at home in an utterly barren wilderness. From the air, all you can really see is what looks like a vast expanse of endless white. But Thatis Vast Expanse of endless white. But that is not the whole story, because what is hard to grasp as i stand here is that this is just the surface of a vast mass of ice that is unbelievably thick. Lets imagine cutting it away right in front of me. The ice sheet stretches forasmuch as two miles, three kilometres, from the surface here right down to the rock below. In fa ct, right down to the rock below. In fact, it is so thick, you can take the worlds tallest building, the Burge Khalifa in dubai, and fit four of them end to end inside. As we walk around, there is a real surprise. White ice is turning dark. The darker a surface, the more it absorbs the sun s rays. Like wearing a black t shirt on a hot day, the more it warms up. You have the start ice here. Martin tranter, the start ice here. Martin tranter, the chief scientist here says one reason for the dark ice is algae. Tiny plants. The algae are microscopically small but they may be having a big impact. What we want to know is how far the algae can spread over the Greenland Ice sheet as the climate warms. It might well be that they will cause more melting and an acceleration of sea level rise. In the evening light, the shimmer of gentle streams. Thousands of them. Until recently, the melting in summerwas of them. Until recently, the melting in summer was balanced by snowfall in winter. But in the last 20 years, the flows of water have multiplied, each one adding to the level of the oceans. No one is saying that this whole thing is going to melt in the next decade or even the next 100, 1000 years. It is not all have to melt for more people to be in danger, only a small amount, very small portion of this ice sheet has two melts to raise the sea levels and threaten millions of people in coastal communities around the world. What is striking is that this massive block of ice may be vulnerable, if more algae darkens the surface and leads to foster melting. Down at the edge of the ice stream, it has become a torrent. We already know melt water is raising the level of the sea bit by bit, but researchers here want to find out whether that rise will accelerate, and for people in low lying areas, florida, bangladesh and parts of britain, getting an accurate forecast really matters. Time for a look at the weather. Heres tomasz schafernaker. Lets see what the week ahead is going to bring because it is looking a little mixed across the uk. That might be an understatement. Some very changeable weather heading our way, particularly wet on wednesday, thursday and friday brighter but still with some showers. As far as todayis still with some showers. As far as today is concerned, a huge contrast between the cloudy and damp east and the sunny west. In Western Areas today, the temperatures will be climbing. Infact today, the temperatures will be climbing. In fact in some parts of sabah climbing. In fact in some parts of Sa Bah Scotland could climbing. In fact in some parts of Sabah Scotland could even warm up to around 25 degrees. Southern scotland. Across the west country and the West Midlands, wales as well, beautiful weather. And the West Midlands, wales as well, beautifulweather. Eastern areas are very different story. Cloud, spots of rain. That is going to continue into the afternoon and you can see the Cloud Holding that north sea coast. At west, it is utterly stunning. Just the chance of a couple of showers there. Perhaps across the high grounds of scotland but that is pretty much it. The warm spot today will almost certainly be across south west and the parts of scotland, perhaps glasgow getting up to 26. Through tonight, Murky Drizzly weather pushes away towards the east. The weather will be improving as we enter tuesday. So tuesday, overall, looking at the uk is going to be the best day of the week. We can guarantee almost dry weather for 95 of the country. A fine day, warm as well. A few spots of rain in the tip of home or maybe and if you are unlucky you might catch a shower, but on balance a lovely day. Very different story from wednesday onwards. A powerful jet stream will send a low pressure and a Weather Front in our direction, so that means a few hours of some very soggy weather. It looks as though the morning might start off dry in east here, but very quickly the weather through. The jet strea m quickly the weather through. The jet stream is powerful, that rain will not last very long. By the time we get to the second half of the afternoon, perhaps rush hour, that rain will have cleared out into the north sea. Thursday, very blustery. Low pressure, lots of isobars. A blustery day on thursday. A mixture of sunshine and showers and maybe a bit better on friday. Summer is on hold, still.
