Charlies parents wanted to take their son to the us for a treatment trial. More than 80,000 people raised £1. 26 million in a crowd Funding Campaign to fund the treatment abroad but in todays ruling, thejudge said that it was in charlies best interest to remove life support and concentrate on palliative care. This court has had to face one of the most fundamental issues for any court, it has not been easy, lessons do need to be learned about how medical professionals face decisions such as this, how they act with sufficient speed, and how they communicate with the families of desperate the ill children such as charlie. It is regrettable and inexplicable that much of the reason for their decisions only ten to light after proceedings had been issued. The hospital have said they cannot begin to imagine how distrustful this is for charlies family, and now they are going to plan for the next ages in his care how stressful this is for charlies family we understand his family are consulting their legal scene. It is not clear that the judge will give leave to appeal. They have three weeks to make that decision about appeal. It depends whether new arguments can be presented, but the evidence has been considered in court today. Were you surprised by thejudgment . Court today. Were you surprised by the judgment . I wasnt surprised, there have been cases which have come to court, different cases, but where parents have wanted to continue treatment for their very ill children and the medical view is that it ill children and the medical view is thatitis ill children and the medical view is that it is not in the childs best interests and the court will look at the oval burdens and benefits of treatment. Considering the underlying conditions of charlie i was not surprised. Look at the overall burdens. The judge said that the medical advice was simply that he would not be able to recover. He would not be able to recover, and one of the key issues was probably that the baby was suffering, the perception he was suffering from the treatment he was receiving or his underlying condition, so balancing what benefit would be sought to achieve through ongoing treatment as against the pain and suffering and the likely outcome of any further treatment. That would be the issues the court was considering. Would it be clear to doctors here and by extension thejudge, the possibility that the treatment in another country would be good for the young boy . I would imagine the team at Great Ormond Hospital have considered all the options. About what would be appropriate in terms of providing treatment for charlie, and my understanding is that the option for treatment in america was going to be experimental. And was going to be experimental. And was going to be experimental. And was going to do no more than really prolong his ongoing suffering. It wasnt going to offer a cure. Prolong his ongoing suffering. It wasnt going to offer a curem wasnt going to offer a curem wasnt a certainty that he would have made the kind of recovery that his parents were hoping for . That is based on the evidence produced in court today, and of course he is a very ill baby and the difficulty of transporting him safely for treatment to the United States. So it is the medical opinion and expertise which is crucial in cases like this . And that really does take precedence over any kind of emotional element that would clearly be there from anguished parents . This is a terrible case, really sad, and the parents want to do what they think is best for the child. And from their perspective it means continuing treatment and keeping the baby alive. His concept of best interests is very broad, it might be how far the baby could feel a touch on the cheek or benefit from interaction with his parents, but we have got the underlying suffering of the child from his condition and ongoing treatment, so it is a very difficult balance of what might be to benefit the child through ongoing treatment and i suppose the court was checking the medical view that the Current Treatment would not be to any medical advantage for charlie. The judge said he wanted the child to die with dignity. There is something about managing a dignified and hopefully pain free death. Thanks forjoining us. Other times, it takes several hours, or by the end of the evening or the next day, they can have recovered a lot of function. So, it can have a massive impact. With thrombectomy, doctors use this incredibly delicate piece of wire to fish the clot out of a patients brain.
