Been editorials in the daily mail this week which i thought i could have read in the mirror. It has been that surprising. Why is this happening . I am a conservative. When the conservatives won the majority of 80 in the general election last december, i had this great hope of five Year Parliament after all of the chaos of the parliament before when parliament was so tired, i think here we go, majority of 80, solid conservative government and we can really get things done. And i had this huge disappointment, this huge sense of a government that whatever is seems to turn its attention to, it isnt doing what their level of competence that a tory government, we associate with. And what you are seeing with individuals like myself cut with newspaper titles like the daily mail, it is feeling let down by the people of that you believed in. So the mayor will attack the
conservatives opponents but when you feel your own side are letting you down so badly, conservative governments depend upon reputations for competence. For the head as much as more that perhaps the heart which is labours traditional virtue. And when you get into a mess over exams that the conservatives they got into after the last week, you really start up setting the core cory lee may tory vote. So number 10 downing street are worried about the upset of traditional voters. And titles. They should be now if they want before. I think they probably certainly are if we look at the next story in the times. A bit of a split between Boris Johnson story in the times. A bit of a split between borisjohnson and rishi sunak. Precisely for that reason. Borisjohnson does sunak. Precisely for that reason. Boris johnson does not sunak. Precisely for that reason. Borisjohnson does not want to push away or disappoint his older voters, the optics of this would be terrible for him. Tell us a bit about what this split is over. The tory vote,
traditionally relies on older voters. And part of the commitment to reinforce that relationship during the conservative party old is a pensions guarantee called a triple lock which means that the pension arises by average earnings or at 2. 596 arises by average earnings or at 2. 5 for inflation, whichever is the greatest. And this is meant that the average pensioner has got better and better off each year compared to the average working age voter. And given the potential rise in unemployment, we will see over coming months because of the virus follow and the deterioration in the public finances, i think the chancellor wants to create more fairness across the generations, reduce that sort of benefit to pensioners, so that potentially there is more money available for the rest of the population. But for boris, this is
breaking an election promise and breaking an election promise and breaking an election promise and breaking a commitment to a core part of the tory vote. And so you can see both sides of the argument but it is a very tricky one for the conservative party to navigate. And jason, which was limit side will have to win . This is something rishi sunak has to do. There is a lot to unpack and i love the story which is fascinating. First is this is the first sign of tension we have seen between the chancellor and the prime minister. You dont have to go very far back to find that the blair brown government and under thatcher you had to just between her and Jeffrey Howell when he was chancellor and underjohn major estimate is quite common that you get tensions between the chancel and the prime minister. Probably one exception was David Cameron and george osborne. Now we suddenly have this flare up. Only a tiny one at the moment but the worry here is
that it becomes what is a tiny little this agreement becomes bigger tension down the track. A go back to this point of because of the amount of spending they made over covid i9, at some point, they will have to start making unpopular decisions. At that moment, rishi sunak has been giving going money. No wonder he has the highest Approval Ratings of any member of the cabinet. He has to Start Holding that back. Boris johnson come he didnt like being unpopular either. It is not his stick or how he campaigned. He is the person who chairs the country are not tracked him down. You can see the tensions here and then he gets worse because the tension to the tory backbenches on this issue as well. Not drag them down. Something has to give. Looking at the ft weekend, Alexei Navalny clear for a flight to germany but this has not allay the fears of his supporters that he was not poisoned
and this was delayed in order to allow evidence to disappear before he was evacuated. Tim, what is going on here . I wish i knew. All im talking you to you from the city of saulsberry which many of your viewers will know is a place where there was a very sensational poison attacked by the russian authorities and so this is a city which we are very familiar with what russia gets up very familiar with what russia gets up to. I was listening to a former British Ambassador talking on the bbc radio 4 earlier today, and he was thinking this was unlikely to be something that the kremlin would orchestrate. Because he knows that should this opposition later be poisoned, all of the fingers will be pointing at Vladimir Putin able to make the economic situation
potentially for russia even more dangerous as countries impose sanctions appointed. So putin having been guilty almost certainly for the poison attacks in the past, is going to be blamed for this probably even if perhaps he is innocent on this occasion. And i am afraid his past is catching up with them. occasion. And i am afraid his past is catching up with them. If also you to talk about brexit, jason. If also you. We have a few minutes left. You have to condense it fairly if that is any way an achievable task. Tory mps urging brussels to wake up in brussels saying you need to wake up. A bit ofa brussels saying you need to wake up. A bit of a deadlock here. The latest round of talks between Michel Barnier and the government david frost concluded today with michel
barnier saying the chance to chances ofa barnier saying the chance to chances of a deal were unlikely. As we know from experience, please talks ongoing. There should be another round soon. There is a lot of brinkmanship which takes place. The closer you get to the deal, the more ofa closer you get to the deal, the more of a partnership it is. The express has taken a very express line on this. It is not the most objective line but that is not their view on brexit. It is a paper which is probably more brexiteers than any other out there. And obviously they decided that it is the eus file. I think a fairer kind of overview of this would be is unreasonable objections on both sides which hopefully they can resolve went but it is not guaranteed. I will give you a shot, tim. I dont disagree. Jason has given a very fair account. We do need an agreement. The european economy is in enough trouble without both sides of the brexit talks finding some compromise. I suspect it will be some sort of an agreement and there is always is the case it will be at the last minute. Finally and briefly, the japan times, this question about whetherjoe biden would be on obama 2. 0 for asia. An election the whole world is watching. What is asias concern here. Actually, this is more of a us domestic issue at the moment. It is becoming one of the dividing lines between joe becoming one of the dividing lines betweenjoe biden becoming one of the dividing lines between joe biden and becoming one of the dividing lines betweenjoe biden and donald trump. Donald trump is goading joe biden because Barack Donald trump is goading joe biden because ba rack obama donald trump is goading joe biden because barack obama did this great pivot when he came into office of shifting american towards china and the far east. Obviously, when we
know a lot more about china now than we did then and it is reputation has suffered greatly in the last four, five years, and the question marks about whether obama was right to try and get so close to president xi jinping, and biden has become slightly on the fence about this. He is now saying yes we were close to china then and im not sure i will ta ke china then and im not sure i will take a much tougher line at him now. The big question is is he genuine about that. In whichever way it goes, ifjoe biden wins, it will be very ha rd goes, ifjoe biden wins, it will be very hard for him to go any softer on china, isnt it . Ithink very hard for him to go any softer on china, isnt it . I think so. You look at the democrats in the house of representatives led by nancy pelosi. They have been very tough and their rhetoric and in their proposed actions towards china, not least because of the crackdown and democracy in hong kong. I think america feels strongly about this
across the aisle. As we do here in the uk. Ithink across the aisle. As we do here in the uk. I think the across the aisle. As we do here in the uk. Ithink the persecution across the aisle. As we do here in the uk. I think the persecution of the uk. I think the persecution of the ouija muslims in china has also upset the democrats. I think the democrats did not have a particular good record when they were last in office, i think that in those china too much. We get a muslim. They turned a blind eye to some of the economic abuses that beijing were guilty. But if beijing is expecting a much softer should biden went office in november, that it is unlikely to happen, is an equipment weekend muslim. Unlikely to happen, is an equipment weekend muslim. I look forward to speaking to you both in a short while. Thank you both. Thats it for the papers. If youre in the uk, tim and jason will be back in just over half an hour to look at more of the stories being covered by newspapers and websites here. Goodbye for now. Good evening. Im sure many of you, just like me, were woken up by the strength of the wind first thing this morning, and it didnt let up throughout the day, did it . In fact, weve been literally awashed by weather watcher pictures showing the seas that have been whipped up into a frenzy, with gusts of winds in excess of 60 miles an hour along the coast. In fact, if we take a look at the gusts that we have throughout the day, quite widely, 60 miles an hour, but we did actually get a gust of wind recorded in the needles just over 70 miles an hour unusual, really, for this time of year. Now, that low pressure, well, its going to gradually drift its way northwards, but we still keep the strong winds through the night. And were still going to keep some showery outbreaks of rain. Now, some of the rains been really quite intense, fairly persistent through scotland over the last few hours, and we are going to keep that going overnight. Some sharper showers into Northern England and Northern Ireland. So, there will be some showers driven in by some blustery winds
through this evening and overnight. Some clear skies. But because the wind direction is still coming from a south westerly, not a particular cold night, temperatures holed up into the mid teens. So, we start off on a mild note for saturday morning, quite a blustery one but the winds nowhere near as strong as today because the low is moving away, the isobars are going to open up. This little weather front here could enhance some showery outbreaks of rain into scotland and Northern Ireland to begin with. We could see some showers into northwest england and wales as well. But, really, if we draw a line from the Bristol Channel over to the wash, anywhere south and east of that, the showers should be fairly isolated throughout the day. A blustery afternoon, gusts of winds 30 to 35 mile an hour, but in terms of the feel of things, not quite as warm as the last couple of days. We should see highs of 22 degrees thats 72 fahrenheit. A little bit cooler into the far north, the wind now coming in off the sea here. Now, on sunday, a better day for scotland. Drier and eventually into Northern Ireland, as most of those showers tend to migrate a little bit further
south and east on sunday. In terms of the feel of things, were going to close out the weekend with highs of 21 degrees. Now, lets take a look at whats in store monday into tuesday. Unfortunately, it doesnt make for great reading. It does look likely that its going to stay wet at times and those temperatures a little bit disappointing for the final week of august.
