Police brutality in the spotlight in mexico, with a teenage Soccer Player shot by a policeman from a parked patrol car. And the Washington Redskins American Football Team agrees to review its team name, which has long been considered offensive to native americans. Welcome to the programme. President trump is facing criticism over his plans to celebrate american Independence Day at mount rushmore. Thousands of people are set to attend a fireworks display, and the event wont require people to wear masks, or be socially distanced. Our north america editor, jon sopel, is in washington. He explained why the president is travelling to south dakota. Well, the president wants to mark Independence Day in the way that things are normally done, with a big fireworks display and a speech from him in the shadow of four of americas greatest president s carved into the rock in mount rushmore. But more noticeable about the speech, which he will go on about left wing mobs trying to destroy american history, will be the fact that the event is taking place at all. Given the fact that the governor, a trump supporting governor in south dakota has said everyone is welcome, there will be no social distancing. The same thing will play out here in washington tomorrow where there will be fireworks along the potomac and there will be thousands gathering along the mall, against the advice of the citys mayor. All this at a time when americas cases are going through the roof. Every day setting new records for the number of cases. In texas, where there is another trump loving governor, he has had to impose mandatory wearing of masks throughout the state, because the situation has got so bad. Donald trump keeps saying that he hopes the coronavirus willjust go away it is showing absolutely no signs of doing so. Nick estes is a native american historian from the lower brule sioux tribe, the native american nation which claims ownership of mount rushmore, and the sacred black hills on which they were carved. Hes assistant proessor of american studies at university of new mexico. Thank you for coming on the programme. Thank you for having me. What do you make of donald trump . Visit . Donald trumps visit is really in response to a long standing conflict that can be summed up injust the last couple of months even though there has been in between the governor of south da kota between the governor of south dakota and the tribes and, as you mentioned earlier, the governor has refused to the states. She has been very aggressive towards the tribes who have set up health check followed to protect the communities because, as some of your listeners may no, indigenous tribes in the us are chronically underfunded for healthcare and the infrastructure in place is very precarious so any kind of infection of covid i9 such as here, can be devastating again about multiple generations of families. It is not that Indigenous People have lack of immunity it is actually the Structural Conditions of poverty and generations of colonisation. Donald trumps belligerence is really a slap in the face to the tribes who have been protecting their communities by taking the necessary measures to stop the spread of covid i9 while at the same time donald trump has been very belligerent and aggressive towards tribes. Back in 2016, 2017, when he took office, two weeks after he evicted by force the opposition to the decoder axis pipeline, if a straight the approval of that pipeline as well as the Keystone Pipeline currently being constructed directly through the sioux nation territory where he is giving the speech right now. Sorry to interrupt, on the location specifically where he is giving his speech, what does that monument represent to you . The American Indian movement is pa rt American Indian movement is part of the Power Movement renamed the monument as the shrine of hypocrisy. To us, it isa shrine of hypocrisy. To us, it is a symbol of White Supremacy, not just for is a symbol of White Supremacy, notjust for our is a symbol of White Supremacy, not just for our people is a symbol of White Supremacy, notjust for our people but it is the slap in the face carving these symbols of White Supremacy in our most sacred mountains, but to all Indigenous People including African American brothers and sisters as well. This monument a tt ra cts sisters as well. This monument attracts about 2 million visitors a year but also it was carved by a man who had ties to the ku klux klan. Thank you very much for explaining that. We appreciate your time. Thank you. Health officials and local leaders in the us are urging people to limit their celebrations for Independence Day as Coronavirus Infections continue to surge. Texas has seen a record daily increase of almost 8000 new cases. Its already led to the governor ordering that face coverings must be worn in public in most of the state. A little earlier i spoke to professor peter hotez, whos co director of texas childrens Hospitals Center for vaccine development. I asked him how big a test Independence Day celebrations will be in trying to stop the surge of covid 19 in the us. We are in a very difficult and dire Public Health crisis, and that has to do with the following we are seeing this very steep acceleration in the number of covid 19 cases, particularly in the southern half of the United States. Across the country, back in april and march, the peak was around 30,000, 35,000 cases, we brought it down to 18,000 but now it is climbing back aggressively, so it was 40,000 cases last week, 50,000 cases this week, it will be 60,000 next week and projections are it will soon be at 100,000 cases a day. Professor just to jump in there, when we are talking about those numbers. President trumps case is that the numbers are up because that testing is up, if you test more the numbers go up because you test more. That is a very misleading statement because the reason i say that it is being paralleled by a steep acceleration in hospital admissions and intensive care admissions and the Positivity Rate is going up, so the point of his statement of obfuscate the stark reality that we are having a big surge on our intensive care units in texas, arizona and florida that are citing to resemble what we saw new york back in the spring. Starting to resemble what we saw new york back in the spring. And there is this denial from our administration that there is a major crisis and really no National Strategy or roadmap so that the states, including our state of texas is left on its own in terms of strategy. There is some backup with respect to providing Personal Protective Equipment and supply chain management, and that sort of thing, but in terms of a roadmap, the states are more or less operating independently. And why do we think there are those surges in cases, in lets say texas, is this young people getting together, is this older people not wearing masks, what are some of the issues here . What happened was, if you speak to the epidemiological monitors, we opened up our states prematurely before bringing to down to containment mode, which meant less than one new case per million residents per day. When we did open it was without any kind fadvocacy or call the masks, the bars opened up and people started piling into the bars and pubs with not much regard for staying away. The beaches were packed, and it was more or less business as usual. There was not that adequate level of communication or oversight to guide how we did that. We didnt put in place a adequate Public Health infrastructure so all these forces combined to produce a very toxic mix, which is the situation we are facing right now. Professor peter hotez. The coronavirus lockdown in england has just been eased, with many businesses including pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and cinemas allowed to reopen in the next few hours. The british Prime Minister has urged people to enjoy summer safely and says he wont hesitate to reverse the measures if cases begin to climb. 0ur Political Correspondent alex forsyth has more. So two of you . Yes, please. Its in the diary, the tables booked. Businesses preparing to open up after months of lockdown. Some Restaurant Owners not sure what to expect. Nobody knows, no one knows. We have no idea whos going to come, who isnt. This tourist town in the cotswolds is gearing up. Even in the model village, it feels like a big moment. Anxious, nervous, excited. Its a nervous time for number ten, too in his words, a turning point they have to get right, with the virus still present. If it starts running out of control again, this government will not hesitate in putting on the brakes and reimposing restrictions. As we take this next step, our biggest step yet on the road to recovery, i urge the british people to do so safely. This is what the government wants to avoid. Last week, crowds crammed onto bournemouth beach, seemingly ignoring social distancing. Critics claim the Prime Ministers public messaging was in part to blame. Tomorrows been described as super saturday. Are you confident at this point that youve struck the right balance between the countrys health and the economy, and are you confident youve got the right public messaging . And to the scientists, if i may, are you comfortable with the pace that this unlocking is progressing . 0n the balance, it is incredibly important to get the balance right, and our priority is health. 0ur priority is the health of the british public. What were trying to do is walk this narrow path. There is no perfect time. There is no perfect, exact way of doing it. This virus is a long way from gone, but its not going to be gone for a very, very long time. Its now a lot lower than it was. We are going to have to take risks, whatever we do. And this seems a reasonable package of risks at this particular time, at this particular pace. But none of us believe, and im sure nobody watching this believes this is a risk free next step. This is a significant moment for the country, but its a significant political moment, too. The governments faced real criticism for the way its handled aspects of this crisis. Now, as england faces the biggest easing of restrictions so far, ministers can only hope theyve got this right. In leeds, theyre preparing for the weekend. Extra street marshals will be out, asking people to keep their distance. 0ne local Police Representative is angry its all happening on a saturday. Its absolutely nonsense. They should have done it on a monday and done a slow, phased release, giving people a chance to adapt. Just days ago, leicester was the first place subject to a local lockdown, after a spike in cases. Today, the government said local outbreaks will be a feature of life to come, as the country takes this next step, so welcome for some, but not without warning. Alex forsyth, bbc news, westminster. A mass burial has taken place in myanmar after one of the worst mining disasters in the countrys history. Rescuers are working to retrieve bodies from the jade mine after it collapsed on thursday. More than 170 people are now confirmed dead, with fears there are many more who will be lost forever. Freya cole reports. Kneeling by the coffin of a relative, a pregnant woman is overcome with grief. She is one of hundreds of people faced with the grim task of laying loved ones to rest. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but have been hindered by the danger that remains in the flooded mine. Translation we have to take care of the safety of the rescue teams during the recovery operation. We are doing our duties in a very dangerous place. We have found nearly 200 dead bodies so far but i believe there will be some victims under the water that we cant find. The wall of water and mud cascaded into the jade mine on thursday. Workers scrambled for their lives, warning others of the sudden danger. But for many, the chance to escape was impossible. In myanmar, the jade industry is riddled with corrupt links to the military and wealthy business owners. This mine should have been closed for the rainy season. But instead, so many took the risk with the hope of a lucky discovery. Translation we are working for a living at the jade mine. There was nothing i could do when i heard my nephew died in the landslide. He is one of so many. Leaders in myanmar have blamed the disaster on the countrys high rates of joblessness. The government has promised an investigation, but critics have called out the lack of action for decades. Which has resulted in tragedy. Freya cole, bbc news. This is bbc news. Our main headline this hour President Trump is facing criticism over his plans to celebrate american Independence Day at mount rushmore, with no compulsory face masks or social distancing. The Washington Redskins American Football Team has agreed a review of its Controversial Team name following renewed pressure from its main sponsor. Fedex, a major backer of the franchise and the teams stadium, is asking them to remove the controversial name which has long been considered offensive to native americans. The latest calls come after a fresh focus on racism sparked by worldwide protests over the death of george floyd. Suzan harjo is a longserving campaigner against the use of offensive native american names and imagery. She began the litigation against the redskins almost three decades ago, and was awarded the president ial medal of freedom by barack 0bama for her efforts. She is now heads up the morning star instutute, an organisation which continues to campaign on this topic. Thanks very much for coming on the programme. Thank you for having me. You have been campaigning on the four decades, do you think this is finally it . Do you think the name will change . Weve been here before, so im not dancing in the end zone yet. Its good to be optimistic and to think that the latest news is the best news and it will lead to something, but i see this particular statement as somewhat duplicitous. I think it isa somewhat duplicitous. I think it is a way of stopping the momentum that exist and slowing us momentum that exist and slowing us down. Thats interesting, and of course this has become and of course this has become an issue that, over the years there has been a refusal to change the name, obviously. A refusal to engage, now there is a promise of a review. And what you make of the fact that this has come from financial pressure from a sponsor . This is something weve been asking forfor more is something weve been asking for for more than a decade, carrying on talks with fedex and with others, and the letters were sent out from socially responsible investors to fedex, to nikkei, to pepsi, and fedex responded immediately. It only took ten yea rs immediately. It only took ten years to get there, but things happened very quickly when they happen. I see, that this was pa rt happen. I see, that this was part of the plan, essentially. 0bviously part of the plan, essentially. Obviously you would have referred the name changed years agojust referred the name changed years ago just because of your effo rts ago just because of your efforts but the campaigning effo rts efforts but the campaigning efforts has specifically targeted the sponsors as a way to try to apply pressure. Yes, money talks and unlike all of the changes we have been so successful in gaining an educational athletics, over two thirds of them have been removed from the American Sports landscape since the first one fell in 1970, in educational sports, the focus is the young people, and their health and well being, and you can appeal to their teachers, their administrators, their pa rents their administrators, their parents on that level, with the professional sports its all about the money. There is no other consideration. The only time people come into the equation is when they are talking about liability, so with professional athletics, you really have to have money talking to money and so im so grateful for fedex stepping up and saying, change the name. 0k, well we will await the results of this review. Thank you so much for coming on the programming talking us, suzan harjo. Lets get some of the days other news. And just before we do, lets quickly take you to the United States. We have live pictures of mount rushmore, because donald trump has flown in this evening to mark Independence Day and you can see it has just gone 20 past eight in the evening there. The band has just been playing, people have been gathering and we are expecting to hear from been gathering and we are expecting to hearfrom Donald Trumpa expecting to hearfrom donald trump a little later on. He will be taking to the podium and giving a speech stopper he has been criticised for travelling there because as you can see people are standing quite close together. There is no compulsory social distancing at the event and as you can see there, there is no compulsory need to wear masks, so he has been criticised by many in the medical profession, given the rise and third in coronavirus cases being witnessed right across the United States right now. While much of the recent focus on Police Brutality has centred on the United States, its a problem in many other parts of the world, too. Recent protests in mexico have drawn attention to killings there. Will grant reports. One last goal for 16 year old Alexander Martinez gomez. In a tragic goodbye team mates at the us born semi professional football footballer smothered his coffin with hugs and tears. Still at a loss as to how he could have been shot in the head by police as he chatted to his friends outside a gas station in oaxaca state. At his wake his distraught mother said local police shot him like he was a common criminal. He was a sportsman, he had a scholarship, she cried. And these were supposed to be the people who look after us. The policeman has now been arrested over the shooting. In a statement, the state Attorney Generals Office said that there will be no impunity in this case or any other in which members of the Police Forces have harmed the well being and the lives of 0axacan families. Police brutality is an ongoing and serious problem in mexico. Few mexicans will forget the disappearance in late 2014 of 43 Student Teachers in guerrero state who we re the last seen in hands the local police. This is one specific form of Police Brutality which as you take someone into custody and the person ends up dead. That is one type of brutality but there are many others. The use of torture by mexican Law Enforcement is a systemic problem. From small towns in rural 0axaca to the capital of mexico city, protests over Police Brutality are growing. Earlier this month, demonstrations turned ugly after a young man, giovanni lopez, died from wounds received while in Police Custody in guadalajara. In guadalajara itself, a policeman was set alight. Mobile phone footage taken from the night giovanni was detained suggested it was for not wearing a face mask. The bbc has repeatedly approached the Public Security ministry for an interview but no one has been made available. You can find similar cases, like the one we saw in guadalajara in recent years and pretty much every state in mexico. As Alexander Martinezs friends sang a lament around his coffin, his hopes of a life in sport or cut short by policeman who were either unaware or unconcerned of who they were shooting at. Another sign of a country where a process of Genuine Police reform is long overdue. Will grant, bbc news. As the Retail Sector battles to find safe ways of operating during the pandemic spare a thought for the cosmetics counter. The risk of covid 19 transmission can make the act of trying and buying makeup very difficult, but south korea, praised for its handling of the pandemic, may have found the answer, as reged ahmad reports. Spot the difference. This is cosmetics shopping in south korea via the augmented Reality Experience technology that aims to allow the customer to try and buy while minimising the risk of contracting covid 19. The mirror shows the real you. The embedded screen then takes a photo, analyses it and suggests products. But what makes this technology really useful is that it allows people to test out cosmetic colours without ever trying them on. Translation due to coronavirus, it was uncomfortable to test cosmetics after someone had used it. But this is very convenient, as i can see actual colour on my face in a form of the augmented reality image without even touching my face. Its also very hygienic, so i can try out without any concerns. South korea already has guidelines that recommend shoppers try cosmetics out on the backs of their hands, but this is an industry where nearly the entire Shopping Experience is about putting product on yourface, which means an inventive approach is needed to keep the counters open. That includes installing qr codes next to products. Customers can scan it using their phones to check details and avoid contact with staff as well. South korea has never really locked down in the same way other countries have. The trace, test and treat method of controlling the coronavirus pandemic has been widely praised, and case numbers remain relatively low. Even so, the country is still battling persistent outbreaks, triggering even tighter social distancing measures. Some augmented Reality Technology is already available via phone apps, and theres no guarantee once youve taken the products home that youll fall in love with the real experience. But south koreas Innovative Technological Solutions do give an insight into how the future Shopping Experience might look in the age of covid 19. Reged ahmad, bbc news. Thats it from me. I will be back with the headlines in just a couple of minutes. You can reach me on twitter, im lvaughanjones. Im Lewis Vaughan jones and this is bbc news. Goodbye. Hello there. Theres no sign of our weather settling down any time soon. And this weekend it stays certainly unsettled with cloud and rain on the way and there will be some strong winds as well, particularly as we head into sunday. Scenes like these, i think, be quite commonplace over the next 2a hours. You can see extensive cloud racing then across the atlantic, but this area of cloud in the west atlantic a puny area, a weak area of low pressure at the moment but its going to rapidly deepen as it races towards the British Isles and by sunday it will be bringing gales across northern areas. The winds Strong Enough to bring down some trees, so there is the risk of some transport disruption, particularly in the north. So this weekend, unsettled, windy, especially on sunday. Rain at times. A lot of cloud around. 0ccasional brighter spells. Thats what weve got on the weather menu. Now, over the next few hours, weve got cloud and rain with us across england and wales. Some dry weatherfor a time in scotland. 0ccasional clear spells here. Its a warm night, particularly in the south with temperatures around 15 to even 17 around liverpool and manchester. Whereas further north, a fresher 9 or 10 degrees. Now, through saturday, this rain that we start off with will tend to ease. Well still have some damp stuff around. A little bit of light rain and drizzle just about anywhere, but more especially around the western coast and hills. Perhaps a little bit of sunshine poking through in scotland. Here, though, there will be a few passing showers the afternoon. Temperature wise, well, were looking at highs around 16 17 across the north, england and wales up to around 22 in the warmest spots. Then, saturday night, our area of low pressure begins to flex its muscles and by sunday morning, were looking at a swathe of strong winds. The winds will be strongest quite early on sunday morning, working way across the north. So especially for scotland but also getting very blustery over Northern England on and to the east of the pennines. Gusts of wind could reach 50 or 60 mph. If this low pressure deepens and the winds could be stronger than this, mind you. But either way, winds this strong are capable of bringing down a few trees and certainly causing some transport disruption. Its guaranteed that well have some speed limits, for example. On the bridges and the ferries could be affected. Even as the rain and winds begin to ebb away, were looking at blustery showers following in to the northwest as we head through sunday afternoon. But nowheres really immune from seeing the odd afternoon downpour on sunday. Beyond that, well, it stays unsettled. Were looking at further showers around at times, particularly in the north and west.
