They are angry after the death on monday of george floyd, an African American man from minneapolis, who died after a Police Officer knelt on his neck. President trump has blamed far left groups and anarchists for the violence. Our north america correspondent david willis reports. This was the night america rose up in protest. Angry, destructive protest aimed at the police and their treatment of racial minorities. Curfews were imposed in more than a dozen american cities, but they were ignored. Many of those protests had started peacefully. We cant breathe the mantra of a movement that has taken George Floyds final words and turned them into a rallying cry. I cannot breathe. Mr floyd was captured on video gasping for breath and pleading for his life. The Police Officer seen with his knee on mr floyds neck is now facing murder and manslaughter charges but thats done little to abate the anger and calls are growing for the three other officers involved in his arrest to also be brought to justice. In minneapolis, the states governor had promised a muscular, no nonsense response after five days of rioting that left burned out buildings and ransacked stores. But despite activating thousands more National Guard officers and firing tear gas grenades, the demonstrations continued, along with the violence. It was a similar story in the countrys second largest city, los angeles, where some likened these scenes of unrest to the rodney king riots which razed part of the city to the ground nearly 30 years ago. Like george floyd, rodney king was a victim of Police Brutality caught on camera. Police fired rubber bullets after protesters ignored the mayors desperate plea for calm. President trump said the us military was ready, willing, and able to deploy if the unrest continued. As he hunkered down in the white house, protesters rallied for a second nightjust outside the gates. A potent cocktail of factors are at play here. You then have an element of people who are simply taking advantage of what is a terrible situation if a multitude of reasons. Some may see this, especially in the first two nights of protest, over the last two nights i should say, where it was clear that police were not going to act or intervene, it it became a free for all. Why do you see this going from here . That is a good question and that is the key question. I was anchoring for eight hours straight tonight in the city of los angeles as we watched los angeles in its most precarious night since the 1992 riots after rodney king was beaten. We saw at Different Stores being looted and the police that was simply open a master, there were two money problems. You look around the country and you saw very similar scenes so the question is, when these people run out of gas or will this continue . The National Guard, which is basically like a military force that the states can put out, they are really trying not to do very often, has been activated in nine different states. So what we are going to see on the streets of many different american cities, including los angeles tomorrow, is armed military personnel with assault rifles in the streets of these cities. So the question is, how will that change at this scenario . And will that be enough of a deterrent to help calm some of this . Obviously, ithink a deterrent to help calm some of this . Obviously, i think this protest is probably going to continue in some form until those other officers are arrested. The question is, will this continue, the looting . Because the sad part of this story is that there is a real, justifiable protest that is under way, but these other elements that come in, these agitators, that are looking for trouble, that really do not care much about george floyd and see this as open season to cause problems, they are really taking overin problems, they are really taking over infar problems, they are really taking over in far too many cities and we are seeing violence that we have not seenin are seeing violence that we have not seen in years in america. Opposition parties have been very careful to choose their lines of attack against the government at this time, because they do not necessarily want to oppose the lifting of lockdown measures, because they recognise that we cannot stay in the Current Situation indefinitely and that parts of the economy do need to be opened up and some people are keen to get back to Something Like that life as normal, but interesting to hear the shadow chancellor this morning identifying the test and Trace Programme as a something which it was crucial to the success of lockdown measures as well and also arguing that the economic response that the government has put in place needs to be adjusted to identify the needs of people working in particular sectors. Because that is a fear, as this process goes on and the lockdown measures are eased, that those measures that have been put in place to support the economy and people injobs will place to support the economy and people in jobs will be tapered off ata people in jobs will be tapered off at a different rate. Annalise for labour this morning recognise that the government need to go further to make sure that the test and Trace Programme is working. Tester, track and isolate as essential because if we do not have it we could see the reimposition of lockdown and as a shadow chancellor i am very concerned about what happened to our economy, as well as the health impact. They are not even necessarily things that need to take very long, for example the need to give local authorities the power to shut down local businesses if there are problems with the disease circulating in them. I think there will be a lot of anxiety about people with jobs of whether this is going to be the end of the careers and if they will be able to get back to them.
