And on newswatch, as storms are followed by floods and part of the uk, how is bbc news handling the logistics of covering extreme weather events . Join us tonight at 7 45pm on bbc and news. Bbc news. Good evening. A british man who was quarantined on the diamond princess cruise ship injapan has died from coronavirus. He is one of six people who were onboard to have died from the virus. The respiratory disease, which causes pneumonia like symptoms, has infected almost 84,000 people in more than 50 countries. And although the vast majority of cases remain in china, the virus is now spreading faster outside the country. The World Health Organization says most, if not all countries, should expect outbreaks. Here in the uk, 19 people have coronavirus, with the infection here in the uk, 20 people have coronavirus, with the infection confirmed in a patient from wales for the first time. In a moment well look at the effect of coronavirus on the global economy, and well answer some of the most pressing questions on how to manage the threat the virus poses, but first our Health Editor hugh pym has this report. Its the first british fatality from the coronavirus. The man had been a tourist on this cruise ship. After contracting the virus, he was said to have been fairly poorly. Five japanese people on the ship have also died. More than 700 cases were diagnosed with the ship quarantined in early february. Two more people are being treated at this unit after testing positive. A man from swansea
has attracted the virus after returning from northern italy. The first case in wales. Theres been a surge in the number of calls to the nhs iii surge in the number of calls to the nhs 111 health line. Some callers have told the bbcs of delays. The government has sought to reassure the public. The issue of coronavirus is something that is now the governments top priority and ijust had a meeting with the chief medical officer and secretary for health and others talking about the preparations that we need to undertake. Let me repeat the advice of the chief medical officer, which i think is the best thing to get across. The most valuable thing you can do to prevent the spread of coronavirus is to wash her hands for 20 seconds or more. Wash your hands. With hot water and soap. Other countries are stepping up their responses to the virus. Japans Prime Minister has asked all close to all schools to close for late march. Prayers were cancelled for the first time in decades to contain the infection. New Zealands Health minister confirmed the first case in sub Saharan Africa has been confirmed in. This is the most worrying moment now. Like the former Health Secretary said the constellations may be needed in the uk. Look at fellow no dole like italy and japan, you can see barry to back things are happening and we iiow to back things are happening and we now have to make some choices. Very dramatic things are happening. If we want to contain the viruss very low levels of penetration in the population. To tryjust limit the population. To tryjust limit the spread, some football is being played behind closed doors. Teams we re played behind closed doors. Teams were facemask and the International Football s unions say its concern for the safety of players. Football isa for the safety of players. Football is a global game and this is a Global Health problem. Our correspondentjenny hill is injapan for us and sent us the latest. The Japanese Ministry of health had confirmed that the man was being treated in hospital prior to his death. Tonight the Foreign Office have said they are liaising with the japanese authorities i was well as continuing to support the mans family, who have asked for privacy. It was described as a difficult time. He is the first british person known to have died from covid i9,
but here injapan, theyre getting used to this kind of news. Even today we heard that two more japanese people have died from the virus, bring the total number of deaths in the country to attend. As you said, five of those people were infected on board the diamond princess. They were allowed off the ship tested negative for the virus. They were looking clearly relieve their ordeal was partly over. As if we needed it, another reminder of the gravity of this global outbreak. That was jenny hill the gravity of this global outbreak. That wasjenny hill injapan for us. Breaking news from france. The French Defence minister has confirmed that several coronavirus cases have been reported and confirmed on a military base in northern paris. We are hearing news
of several. No number confirmed. More details when we get it. The bbc believes the number of deaths from the coronavirus in iran could be more than 200. Thats six times higher than the official figure. Lets speak to kasra naji from bbc persian. Just explain to us what happening. Were getting reports that the spread of the virus is much more serious than what the government is admitting to. We have today managed to get a figure of 210 from our sources. They say 210 people have been killed or have lost their lives because of the virus, and that is
almost more than six times the officialfigure of 3a almost more than six times the official figure of 3a that was given by the Health Minister at lunchtime today. Why is this so significant, because we heard whenjeremy hunter said hes very concerned and we should be concerned about cases taking place and being reported on the african continent and in iran. Why is important . This is a source of concern is that, 80, the government is not quite sure how to handle the situation. B, it doesnt have quite the facilities or the kids it needs to control it. On top of that, we have the issue of religious figures. Or the kits to control it. The holy city, the
centre of the outbreak in iran, a very serious outbreak. In the religious authorities are still refusing to close down the mean trying there. They say its the peoples religious duty to visit these places of worship and they cannot close them. All that has added to the extent that there is sort of a plummeting confidence in the governments ability to handle this situation and also the governments figures coming out from the Health Minister. The government is coming up against the religious block. What measures have they managed to put in place . How fluid are irans borders . The borders are
semi controlled. Its not open border. There are many flights that have been cancelled to and from the country. Afghanistan was closed for some time but was reopened a few days ago saying that because that border is fluid, its better to control it by having people on the border areas, trying to see whether they can pick up people who might be infected. Apart from that, we have, in the early days of this spread of the virus, iran maintained its flights to chinese cities and there was quite a lot of coming and going between the two sides. I suppose, they are saying they are a group of pilgrims who may have come from china who may have gone straight to the holy city from the place of
outbreak, but those are reports that we are still not sure about. Nonetheless, this remains the sinner according to our reports. The centre. The highest number of deaths reported from tehran. Thank you very much for that overview. Thereve been sharp falls in stock markets around the world because of concerns over coronavirus. In the uk, the ftse 100 closed the week 13 down the biggest fall since 2011. With car companies, Global Manufacturing supply chains are being hit by factory shutdowns in china. Demand

Huge fire that broke out close to the gare de lyon relay station in paris prompted a massive evacuation. This footage showed s the smoke that billowed over the station a couple hours ago. A few vehicles were set on fire by protesters. Police had banned any protesters. Police had banned any protest around the area. Usually artists are spoken out against who perform at france or belgium,
accusing them being close to the former dr congo president and his successor. Lets get more on this. Hello omaha. What did you see at the scene . When i went out in the open, it was alight with fire. Everything was on fire. Everything that could be ignited was on fire and there was a black smoke. We couldnt see the sky. We can hardly wait. We were like 20 people or 30 people who were there who are still shouting and chanting at each other. Has the fire been put out now . Yeah, the firemen
we re been put out now . Yeah, the firemen were delayed but managed to get in eventually after the Police Arrived and the fire is out now, but the smoke is still there and there is still heavy taste of burning. Earlier in the day, there had been reports that the station had been closed and it was reported that it was an electrical fault. Are we talking about the same incident, do you know . No. I dont think so. We didnt see anything earlier. I was in the street all day and we didnt see anything that was going on until 530 in the afternoon. I dont think it was related, sorry. How busy is it was related, sorry. How busy is it around the gare de lyon . Im not there any more but when i was, the
police evacuated the neighbourhood near the gare de lyon and there was i think 1000 or 2000 people who were watching and once the station was closed, 20 minutes later, the Police Arrived and they evacuated everyone. Is there somewhere you would have normally been . Where you passing or do you work there . Yeah, i worked there. Has anything been said from there. Has anything been said from the government . Well, there was warnings, but not before i went out. The warnings were set ten or 15 minutes after the fire started, and all the buildings were evacuated and other people were stuck there until half an hour ago. When will the gare
de lyon be open . I dont know. I think it will open later today. The damage is on the surface on the street, which is really burned. There was some heavy smoke in the metro, so i think what the smoke is gone they will reopen the station. Thank you very much indeed. Heavy downpours are expected to bring more flooding across england and wales as another weekend storm is expected tomorrow. Up to 80 millimeters of rain is expected to fall when storm jorge arrives, delivering another heavy blow for communities whove already been hit by floods. In a moment well hear from danny savage whos in the east Yorkshire Village of east cowik. First, sian lloyd whos in ironbridge in shropshire, where workers have spent the day repairing flood barriers holding

The damage to the defence is outside her property were significant. That was horrific. To see them go back, your breathjust like. And that everything was all right. The warning of a danger to life here may have subsided, but Emergency Services wont be leaving here anytime soon. We havent really cause yet. We are still in response. The flood plains have ove rflowed houses are now flooded. The flood plains have overflowed into settlements. Never underestimate the misery flooding can cause when your home is ruined. Im absolutely devastated. Devastated. Weve been here 20 years, we have a beautiful home and just look at it. The
emotional impact is far worse then the actual impact of the work that youve got to do. People were so desperate to get back in, they were taking risks. Water is still rising, so sandbags are in front of nearly every door. Villagers have been told to move out. The drains have started to move out. The drains have started to back up and weve had to move. The firemen came and said that we should get out. The flood plains of the rivers now stretch for miles. One area is nearly the size of windemere in the lake district. The problem is they are brimming. Water is running off into villages and homes and these wash linens are supposed to protect them. The last thing they need here is more rain. Here are some more news concerning the coronavirus in the uk. The uk
now has 20 confirmed cases of the virus. Weve just been now has 20 confirmed cases of the virus. Wevejust been hearing now has 20 confirmed cases of the virus. Weve just been hearing from the chief medical officer for england, professor chris twitty. He was speaking earlier and hes confirmed that one further patient has tested positive for covid 19. Thats the 20th patient hes referring to. The key point to this, it was a person to person transmission. The virus was passed on in the uk. Not yet clear whether they contracted it directly from an individual who had recently returned from abroad. The transmission took place within the uk, so thats the latest we are hearing from the chief medical officer for england, chris whitty. There is further information, the patient has also been transferred to a specialist in hs centre in st. Thomas. In other
news, the competition watchdog says its found worrying evidence that news, found worrying evidence that people who buy Leasehold Properties are being treated unfairly. The competition and markets authority says homeowners have been taken advantage of, and prospective buyers misled by housing developers. Its an issue that weve covered on bbc Victoria Derbyshire programme numerous times, including the story of gary, who spoke to our reporter Colleen Harris injuly last year. I want to get out. I dont want anything to do with these freeholders. They havent been nice to me. They come in and put me in a position where i have anxiety and my antidepressants have doubled in doses. Sometimes ijust cant cope. Gary bought his flat in 2006. Initially he says he was paying about £270 a year for ground rent and management fees. When the
freeholders sold to another freeholder, he received an annual Service Charge invoice for 1200 £40. Ifi Service Charge invoice for 1200 £40. If i pay them im would be short on my mortgage. The pressures thats been put on me is absolute horrible. I have to save for that deposit like anyone. I pay my mortgage exactly the same as somebody who would have a freehold. But im treated like a rental tenant. We can speak now tojo darbyshire, co founder of national leaseholds campaign and in a leasehold herself. Shejoins me from lostock. Thank you for speaking to us. First off, how did you find yourself in this position . We bought our home in 2010 and we knew it was leasehold. The ground rent was doubling every
ten years which we felt was a bit alarming. We asked the sales lady about freehold and we were told we could buy it at any point for about £5,000, and what they didnt tell us was their plan to sell the freehold onto investors. They did that 11 months later. In summer 2016, she inquired about buying freehold and we found the price had gone from £5,000 we were originally told by the salesperson to around £30,000. What does that now mean personally to you . It makes me so angry. Critical information that would have influenced my Decision Making was withheld. Had i been told at the time that they would sell it as common practice and the cost would
rocket, i would have bought it at the same time i bought my house. Are you trying to sell at the moment or not . I couldnt sell this house. Its got doubling ground rent. Nobody would land on it now. What do you make of whats been said today . Im delighted by the report because we can paint for the last three years about abuses we campaigned for the last three years. Itjust feels like vindication today that somebodys actually listened and somebodys actually listened and somebody gets it and they want to ta ke somebody gets it and they want to take really strong action to help those of us that are trapped in the situation, so i couldnt be more thrilled. Does that mean youre now going to take action . What are you going to take action . What are you going to take action . What are you going to do after hearing about this enforcement . We have a number, over
60,000 people on our Facebook Group for ourcampaign, so what 60,000 people on our Facebook Group for our campaign, so what we can do is now support the cma and terms of their action by by helping to mow lies mobilise cases so we can just help them and support them in terms of mobilising the action they wa nt terms of mobilising the action they want to take forwards. Id love to think the developers would actually do the right thing, its very simple to do the right thing. I dont believe they will do that. Do think theyve gone far enough or do you think the government will to really rethink this and change the law so you dont have to go through this legal battle with blue i i think they may progress in terms
of ground rents. Those of us already stuck in this, its a much more difficult problem because youre dealing with contract law. The developers could compensate us, but they choose not to. They will do as little as they think they can get away with in my experience. More pressure is needed to make them do the right thing. Ijust pressure is needed to make them do the right thing. I just want to know what it is like when you approach whoever is holding the freehold, and you want to discuss the situation with them. Whats it like . You cant talk to a freeholder at all, so you can only contact the Management Company on their behalf. But there is no empathy there. What they believe is that investment in good faith. Ground rents have become an
asset. You just cant have a really sensible dialogue with them. Thank you very much for sharing your story. Now its time for a look at the weather. Heres darren. Weve had some rain today and that may lead to further flooding problems over the coming few days. For a while this evening this rain may ease off a bit, but then we get this spell of heavier rain accompanied by strong and gusty winds squeaking like sleeping in from the atlantic. Have you some rain will be over the hills of wales and western england where we dont need it. After that winds will be strengthening because of storm jorge. That band of rain sweeps away and moves away from mainland scotland. Showers start to pack in as the wind picks up. What or whether arriving in northern ireland, eventually into northern
england in southern scotland. Some school like snow over the hills. Not much warmerfor their school like snow over the hills. Not much warmer for their south because it will be turning windy everywhere. Further set. Gusts of 75 miles, especially in those heavy shower. The winds eased down on sunday. Hello this is bbc news. The headlines a british man who was on the diamond princess cruise ship, has died from coronavirus. Twenty cases have been identified in the uk. The issue of coronavirus is something that is on the governments top priority. Alarm over the outbreak has sent Global Stock Markets into a steep dive, with the ftse100 dropping nearly 13 this week. Fears of a Major International military confrontation, after an attack by Government Forces in syria leaves dozens of turkish soldiers dead. The flooding misery continues for some, residents in parts of east yorkshire are evacuated as water levels rise. And coming up, astronomers have detected what they describe as the biggest known explosion in the universe since the big bang. Well be specking to an astrophysicist to find out more. Lets get more now on our top story. Here in the uk, 20 people have coronavirus and the World Health Organization says the outbreak of the coronavirus is getting bigger. To tell us more is professor sian griffiths,
a Public Health expert who co chaired the hong kong governments inquiry into the 2003 sars epidemic. She joins us live now from oxford. Thank you for speaking to as here at the bbc news. First off, as you have been watching the coronavirus story canal, what has been paramount in your mind . I think paramount would be that inevitably, the cases are starting to spread, once we saw the cases coming up from china then we saw the epicentre and a very korea, and iran. It became almost inevitable that it was affecting other countries. At the current time the World Health Organisation are telling us that because we can see the chain spread for most of the cases this does not qualify as a pandemic and we still have a very narrow window of opportunity to contain the disease. But i think one
of the phrases i heard from the World Health Organisation directed generalised that to be needed and all government, also cite the approach meaning we need to try to contain the disease as far as possible. And be prepared to begin to spread a more alarming rate. Yes, doctor michael ryan said this is a reality check. You need to be ready, speaking to countries around the world. How does what is happening now compared with their experience dealing with sars . Well, cyrus was an Infectious Disease but if you cant think it was a more serious movies, you are more likely to die. The numbers were way smaller in fa ct, the numbers were way smaller in fact, and so it is a much larger outbreak. But, many times it is less serious outbreak, although obviously by those who gets severely affected
by those who gets severely affected by it then, they are going to suffer more. I think sars showed us that we really needed to share information and we needed to share information about the cases, about science, about the cases, about science, about the cases, about science, about the research, and the need above all to share information with the public because the public need absolute accurate information, they need to know whats going on because it can be very scary and very worrying and there seems to be a lot of false noose around at the moment. So, that message typing from the who is that we can continue to work on containment, we can continue to do our bit so to speak, so the message that we keep getting out about handwashing, its a really Important Message and its when we need to keep reiterating. Wash your hands, wash your Hands Property with soap and water, dont touch your eyes and your mouth if you sneeze sneak into a tissue and being the tissue. These, and stay away from people who have, dont get too close to people
who have an infectious and sort of cold, flu type of fee. If we take that seriously as individuals, and if we also happened to be in a situation where we might need to self isolate then we need to do that properly and take it seriously. So, its our contributions as individuals into an environment where we are seeing that government plans getting into action i think there has been more in the press today about the what if scenarios, should be need to ramp up the response i would the nhs cup, how would the acidic agencies get involved, all of that. Its all part of planning and being ready and being prepared. Who would you describe as the super spreaders in this particular outbreak . |j describe as the super spreaders in this particular outbreak . I dont know, who the individuals are, i know, who the individuals are, i know from equity we had super spreaders and the point about the report that we get is that we looked
back, we looked back at what lessons could be learned. And then we identified a series of super spreaders who are people who shared more virus and seem to be more effective than others and so the super spreaderfor effective than others and so the super spreader for example on the hospital wards at the prince of wales hospital in march 2003 infected a lot of medical care staff because they did not realise what this disease was and they were not fully protected and then they caught the interview. There was a super spreader in an apartment block and that person was actually immunocompromised and had been going for renal treatment and in that case, super for renal treatment and in that case, super spreading west spread to the environment, to a faulty sewage system. There was a super spreader ina system. There was a super spreader in a hotel where people were staying overnight before they then flew around the globe and that super spreader managed to spread the
disease to a variety of countries including canada and vietnam as well as into the community and hong kong. So, you see different patterns of super spreading and these people are identified often in retrospect because a lot of the containment exercises that if you have a case, you identify the case on the case is isolated, have been seeing Public Health england do a lot of Contact Tracing and to try to work out the transmission because what you need to do is to identify who might be potentially infected and that how stopping them from passing on the disease. So, super spreaders are usually identified and often identified through the Contact Tracing process to retrospectively up tracing process to retrospectively up and you might not know when they are sitting in front of you. Thank you for that insight. Thank you and particularly pertinent as we hear that the patient confirmed as number
20 was transmitted within the uk. If you want to find out more, all the developments are on this outbreak and the symptoms to watch out for and the symptoms to watch out for and how to guard against the virus, just had to bbc news website and also the app. Astronomers have detected what they describe as the biggest known explosion in the universe since the big bang. Its five times bigger than anything theyve previously observed. The blast which came from a supermassive black hole in a galaxy hundreds of millions of light years away was deteched by telescopes in western australia. The light from the explosion has been travelling for about four hundred million years. Let get more on this now with dr becky smethurst, who is an astrophysicist and Research Fellow at the university of oxford. She joins me from winchester. Thank you forjoining us here at bbc news. It has been described as a giant fossil i believe, what does that mean . How old is it . A giant
radio fossil, how old and how big . So, this fossil is the echo of the energy given off by a big supermarket supermassive black hole and you said about 400 million yea rs hole and you said about 400 million years to get to us so when he left on next journey, years to get to us so when he left on nextjourney, dinosaurs were still running the earth but also as a fossil impact we think its also 280 million years beyond that as well, it is actually happening that well, it is actually happening that we are seeing the relic of this massive explosion. Something like this phenomena, it is a story about destruction or creation . |j this phenomena, it is a story about destruction or creation . I think a little bit of both actually. I think one thing i may have said that his energy given off by the black hole first of all. Thats really not how we think about black holes, we think of them as this giant who bris of the universe where nothing can escape them but actually theres a limit to what a black hole can take
in. You cant keep checking stuff at eight and it takes all that stuff and and the pressure increases so much around the black hole the more stuff you throw in and eventually what the black hole tends to do i like to start of describe it and what astronomers have detected its weird because we are destroying the stuff that falls into the black hole but then activity it can kind of inject energy back into the surroundings and trigger more stars to be born. So its an eye cyclical process in our way. Some pretty sophisticated equipment must have been used. Exactly. The radio telescopes he used to do this whereas you set australia, india all brought together to discover this, they have to use huge arrays of many radio telescopes working to get it to detect and then also combined it with x ray telescopes as well and what they found is the huge big
cavity in the surrounding staff with the black hole and if you think about the scales in terms of how big the black hole blew out, if for example maybe you are i worked to burp right now in the uk we would blow out a cavity in the atmosphere that goes from canada to the middle east and that would be the equivalent of the size. Thank you for explaining something very complicated and very easy terms and making it sound really exciting. Thank you very much. Now its time for newswatch. Heres samira ahmed. Hello, and welcome to news watch with me. Storms are followed by floods and part of england and wales
and with more stars to
