Ministry and concern is growing over the shortage of food. The United Nations is warning of looming famine, with half of gazas population now in a food emergency. People living in isolated Northern Areas have told the bbc that children are going without food for days, and animalfeed is being used to make bread. One in four households is facing a catastrophic lack of food, according to the un, because of renewed fighting and aid convoys still being regularly blocked from reaching some areas. We start our coverage with this Special Report from our middle east correspondent lucy williamson. In the middle of a war, a battle for survival. Men sent to fight over cans of beans and sacks of flour. The un is warning that famine is coming fast, to gazas Northern Areas, as aid arrives more slowly. What we had was actually from the six to seven days of truce we had at the beginning of this war, and whatever aid was allowed into gaza and the north of gaza has actually been consumed by now. The World Food Programme told us that four out of its last five deliveries to Northern Gaza were blocked by israel. This shouldnt be a logistics crisis, it shouldnt be a logistic problem. We are in the mediterranean, there is enough food around this region to feed 2. 4 Million People and prevent a famine in the gaza strip. The issue is access, the issue is being able to get that food to people. Israel says it needs to control aid to prevent food and fuel reaching hamas. For some israeli protestors that is not enough. They have been blocking Border Crossing points to try to force hamas to hand over israeli hostages. Even with talk of a hostage deal, protestors are demanding a siege. A six Year Old Girl who went missing in gaza city 12 days ago has been found dead, along with several of her relatives and two paramedics who tried to save her. Hind rajab was fleeing the city with her aunt, uncle and three cousins when the car they were travelling in appears to have come face to face with israeli tanks. Hind was the last member of the family alive when she made a desperate plea for help to the Palestinian Red Crescent using a mobile phone. Nick beake told me more. Because there was this incredible recording of her talking to people from the emergency services, this Emergency Call in which she describes how shes trapped in her uncles vehicle with her relatives around her who have been killed. It seems the vehicle had come face to face with an israeli tank, and for 3 hours she was talking to the Emergency Responders over the phone. At one point, the conversation is patched through so that she can talk to her mother and hind becomes increasingly upset during this time. We know that there was an ambulance that was dispatched after about 3 hours or so with two paramedics, but then nothing more was heard of the paramedics or six year old him. But as you say, catherine, what were hearing today from hinds grandfather is that her body has been found. Also, weve got some information from the Palestinian Red Crescent, and they have said today that their two staff were killed. They have accused the israelis of deliberately targeting the vehicle. They say this ambulance was found burnt outjust a few metres away from the family vehicle. And they say this is despite the fact that there had been coordination conversations with the idf, the Israeli Defense forces, about getting the Emergency Medics to that location. Now, we have approached the israeli army for a response to this, but as of yet, nothing from them. They arrived at the location where hend was there and then they were deliberately targeted. Although our ambulance had very clearly a red class and emblem. The remains of the bodies of two of my colleagues were found in the Bond Ambulance and hend was still in her family car. We were devastated to learn that after having a long conversation with hend for more than three hours we were with her over the phone. We had to keep her on the line to coordinate safe access to make sure our teams could arrive safely. Howeverthis make sure our teams could arrive safely. However this did not happen. Ijust safely. However this did not happen. I just want to let viewers know that we are trying to get comments from the Israeli Government surrounding this situation. Of course hend on your two colleagues deaths as well. I want to ask about the communications that you had with the israeli army at that point where we were trying to rescue hend. Didnt have any direct communication, we normally coordinate i was safe access through a third party who are responsible to making the coordination. We got the green light after three hours of waiting and then the ambulance was dispatched to the location. They arrived at the location, they confirm that they could see the car where hend was. We had continuous gunfire and the sound of explosions. We missed the line. Since 12 days there were no communication at all. We have lost communication with our staff and hend as well but we were hoping because over the three hours we had already heard gunfire and heard the sound of the israeli tanks so we were hoping that the gunfire wasnt towards them and we were hoping that all of these 12 days that hend and our staff were safe. Unfortunately today we have learnt that they have all been killed in one of the most devastating moments for us because the sound of hend still here in my ear where she was appealing for us over three hours to please come and get me. We felt hopeless at that point and we tried our best to coordinate safe access. Unfortunately our teams went in a rescue mention, a humanitarian mission, trying to save this little girl but this mission was not completed. They were all killed. We dont wish any child in this world to experience what hend had to experience. She was trapped with six bodies and blood all over the car for a few hours feeling the fear and panic and surrounded by israeli tanks from all over. She described exactly what he went through. She mention that the tanks were very close, they are getting closer, they are firing at us and we tried our best to call her to calm her down. I cant imagine this happened for any Ambulance Team whatsoever, humanitarians who are just trying to save peoples lives. The story of hend comes as a symbol of the horrific conditions experienced by civilians and Health Care Workers and the brutality they are experiencing browser since the beginning of the war.
